Welcome… to the latest edition of THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK
Summer is in full swing - I hope you’re enjoying the (currently sketchy) weather!
At home we often reflect on our good fortune to be able to grow up and live here in the Norfolk Broads region - we really are lucky in that respect, aren’t we?
Back in 2006, we decided to create a new community-based publication and THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK was launched; eighteen years on, our youngest Jack has finished School and College and has successfully completed his first year in the workplace.
That seems pretty scary to us - wherever does that amount of time go? It serves as a good reminder for us to make the most of life - having gratitude for the simple things and ‘live in the here and now’…
There’s lots of content inside; Articles, Quizzes, Community Events and ‘What's On’ notices - as well as a great selection of thriving local business services.
This magazine is one of 8,000 copies delivered to residents & businesses in: Wroxham, Hoveton, Horning, Badersfield, Coltishall, Horstead, Stalham, Stalham Green, Sutton, Tunstead, Frettenham, Scottow, Belaugh, Sco Ruston, Ashmanhaugh, Smallburgh, Sloley & Buxton.
THE WIGHTON MIRACLE
by Chris Weston
While numerous village parish churches around Norfolk are located in their centres beside the Main Street, many more are often found at one end of the community and maybe located on a hill. One example of the latter is All Saints church in Wighton, near Wells-next-the-Sea. Located in Kirkgate Lane, some of this somewhat large building dates back to the 1300’s, but most of the remainder followed in the 15th centuryas evidenced by some of its architecture of that period.
During the centuries which followed, locals and visitors could marvel at the church structure from a distance, while also admiring its tall square tower. That too was erected in the 1300’s and daily life in and around the village duly rolled on. All remained well until the wintry night of Saturday 27th November 1965, around 8.15pm when the village was hit by a storm. As the storm raged on, the tower suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground below. Its direction of fall thankfully, went away from the church building, so there were no injuries. The falling masonry not only damaged part of the churchyard wall, but also closed the nearby public road for a while.
After “the dust had settled”, emergency repairs were made with a temporary roof added to prevent further damage. And it was also soon realised there were no immediate funds to replace or even rebuild it. Hence it would historically follow the fate of the fallen church tower of North Walsham ’s parish church, which similarly suffered twice, in 1724 and again in 1836. That one was never rebuilt. But in Wighton, with temporary repairs made, daily life resumed, still leav-
ing everyone unsure of the church tower’s future. Only a few years earlier on 6th March 1959, All Saints had been awarded Grade 1 Listed Building status.
But a short time later, came what could best be described as a “miracle” when a Canadian engineer and businessman living in Ontario whose ancestors were buried in the churchyard, read of the incident in a newspaper and immediately offered a ‘rescue package’. He donated 100,000 Canadian dollars for which parishioners were naturally, very grateful. They couldn’t believe their luck and even the local bank made appropriate checks to confirm the offer was genuine, which it was! Then came a further bonus when it was realised the donation would more than cover the tower’s restoration costs.
WROXHAM & COLTISHALL
~ at the heart of our community ~
And by a decade later in 1975, the replaced tower we see today, had arrived and no doubt, the overall job had also been completed“Wight-on time! ’

WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS
CLUB
I have already reached the end of my first month as President of the Wroxham & Hoveton Lions Club, after taking over from Lion Michael Holden, at our changeover event, where was also a great privilege for me to receive The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
My month started with a great day out at the North Walsham Fun day, at which our Mobile Tombola rand Football Game raised £130, towards our charity funds.
Toward the middle of July, I attended the Broadland ATC parade at Wroxham Academy, were the cadets paraded in front of parents
and other guests . Afterwards we were shown around the various activities they undertake. along with a flight simulator, for which the Club contributed funds towards its purchase.
At our meeting on the 27th August, we are looking forward to meeting Scarlett, who is a young disabled girl for who, along with a private charity, we have purchased a
Special Wheel Chair. More news on this next month.
On 4th August, our much-awaited Summer Fete takes place at the Hoveton Village Hall and Field. 10am to 4 Pm. Free parking , Adults £2:50 Children under 16 Free. Fun for all the family with live music, craft and other stalls, classic cars and lots more both inside and out. All monies raise will go towards supporting local deserving causes.

And by a decade later in 1975, the replaced tower we see today, had arrived and no doubt, the overall job had also been completed“Wight-on time! ’

Welcome… to the latest edition of THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK…
Enjoy August & September...
