REROUTED TOUR DE BROADS BRINGS A BUZZ TO LATHAMS AS HUNDREDS OF CYCLISTS RIDE THROUGH POTTER HEIGHAM Lathams of Potter Heigham was at the heart of the Tour de Broads action on Sunday 6th September, as hundreds of cyclists passed the iconic Norfolk Broads destination on a specially rerouted course – with threetime Olympic champion Ed Clancy OBE even stopping by for a photo. As event sponsors of the 2026 Tour de Broads, Lathams, part of the QD Group, welcomed riders, supporters and spectators as the event made its way through Potter Heigham. The area outside the store was buzzing, with FOUR, QD Group’s marketing agency, on hand on behalf of Lathams to cheer on cyclists as they passed shortly after crossing the historic Potter Heigham Bridge, capturing the atmosphere and speaking to riders along the route. A dedicated stop outside the store

gave riders the chance to take a quick break, pose for a photo in the Lathams Tour de Broads photo board and refuel before continuing their ride. The FOUR team handed out bottles of water, sweets and stickers to riders – with the sweets proving a surprise hit among cyclists looking for a little extra boost along the way!
There was also a very special visitor when three-time Olympic cycling champion Ed Clancy OBE stopped by Lathams. Ed chatted to the team about the event and posed for a photo in the Lathams photo board. The Olympic champion had earlier been at the Tour de Broads start line, meeting participants and seeing riders off on their routes through some of Norfolk’s most picturesque countryside and Broads landscapes. Nisha Collins, Brand & Marketing Manager at QD Group, said: “What a fantastic day. There was such a buzz outside Lathams as the cyclists came through Potter Heigham, and it was brilliant to see so many people stopping, saying hello and getting involved.
“We were handing out water, sweets and stickers to keep everyone going, and we couldn’t believe quite how popular the sweets were – they definitely went down a storm with the riders! “Having Ed Clancy stop by for a chat and a photo made the day even more special. Lathams has been part of days out on the Norfolk Broads for generations, so seeing the Tour de Broads come right past our doors and being able to cheer everyone on was something we were incredibly proud to be part of.” Lathams’ involvement continued all the way to the finish line, with the Lathams name appearing on the official 2026 Tour de Broads medals presented to riders completing the event. The Tour de Broads brought together experienced cyclists, firsttime event riders, families, friends and supporters for a celebration of cycling and the Norfolk countryside. For Lathams, the day was an opportunity to do what it has done in Potter Heigham for generations welcome people visiting the Broads and become part of the memories made along the way.
LOCAL CHIMNEY SWEEP & HIS SON CYCLE AROUND THE WORLD George Kohler, 57, of Hart & Kohl, and his son, Josh, 23, have returned home to Halvergate after cycling over 18,000 miles around the world. Starting on 29th March last year, the intrepid duo pedalled through 30 countries, across four continents, setting 3 Guinness World Records titles to become the fastest father and son to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle.
Raising over £72,000 for UNICEF, their amazing journey took them across Europe, Asia, Australia and South America, with highlights including China, Brazil’s Iguazu Falls and the inhospitable Nullarbor Plain in Australia. Army veteran George was humbled by the whole experience. ‘The astonishing kindness of strangers far outweighed the physical and mental pressures of this challenge’. Filmmaker Josh documented their incredible 400 day journey on social media and his YouTube channel @joshpkohler, and is now working on the feature film. Meanwhile, George, a certified member of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and HETAS approved, has picked up his brushes and resumed sweeping. A sweep with a smile and a unique story to tell! BROADLAND MODEL RAILWAY CLUB The Hoveton Show has come and gone and it was a very successful day, even the weather was kind to us. There was a good crowd and we received many nice comments on the quality of the exhibits, the friendly atmosphere and the catering. Now just have a day at Bressingham on 20th September where will be showing Broadland in its latest and much improved status. This will be the last opportunity to see this large layout for some time. We do have a couple of small events in mind, check the Exhibitions page on the website for details as they develop. The club is also looking at new ways to store our “off-duty” layouts to create more space for working on the newer layouts, which in turn will allow us to reorganise our facilities. We can then think about some new activities and some expansion in our membership. Watch this space as these ideas develop and opportunities are presented. As always, if you are interested in our Club, please contact us via the details on our website https:// broadlandmodelrailwayclub.co.uk/

KING GURGUNT OF NORWICH By Chris Weston
Remember the first few lines of the song Teddy Bear’s Picnic “If you go down in the woods today, You’re sure of a big surprise?” Well, I recently discovered a local Legendary Tale to share with members and others… But it wouldn’t involve Teddy Bears, as your big surprise could result in finding evidence of a former King living in or even possibly under, a well-known city landmark!! Almost anyone could make a list naming former monarchs, but I doubt if many have heard of a King, speculated to have once lived along ago, in Norwich!
Long before the Norman Conquest and construction of the stone keep at Norwich Castle, local folklore tells of a once mighty ruler, King Gurgunt. It was claimed at the time, that he “loved Norfolk so much he built a Fine City” starting at the very spot where today’s Norwich Castle stands. According to legend, Gurgunt’s realm preceded even the Romans on our shores. In Norwich, he raised a grand earthen mound, completely unaware of what it might become in future times. Further suggestions have claimed the King also laid out the streets of a future city around it. I wonder if one of these was ‘King Street’ - not far from the castle in one direction?

LOCAL HISTORY
As age and fate caught up with him, King Gurgunt prepared for his own death with the same dignity he had shown in life. He requested to be interred in full armour, sword in hand, with his white hound at his side and the polar bear also laid to rest close at hand. His riches of gold, silver, and jewels, were to be scattered around him in the burial crypt beneath the great mound. However, local belief suggests Gurgunt did not truly die but fell into an enchanted sleep. As a result, deep beneath the grassy summit of Norwich Castle, it has been said he waits, with sword at the ready until the land faces any dire need.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
On Saturday 7 November Norwich Gilbert and Sullivan Society present a concert version of “THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE” at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Wroxham Road, Sprowston, Norwich NR7 8TZ at 2.30pm. The principals, who will be in costume, include David Ivison (Major-General), Tim HurstBrown (Pirate King), Andrew Inglis (Frederic), Kevin Jeckells (Samuel), Luke Davey (Sergeant of Police), Becky Pick (Mabel), Beverley McInnes (Edith), Teresa Clayton (Kate) and Pam Warren (Ruth). There is a strong supporting chorus. Patrick Monk is Musical Director; Peter Woods is Accompanist; and the Director is Tim HurstBrown. PIRATES was premiered at The Royal Bijou Theatre, Paignton, Devon on 31 December 1879. The show was never out of the repertoire of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, always being one of the most popular of the Savoy Operas. The D’Oyly Carte continued to perform the show right up until the company closed in 1982. When the D’Oyly Carte visited the Theatre Royal, Norwich for the last time in May 1981, PIRATES was in the repertoire. Amongst many delightful songs in the show are “Poor wand’ring one”, “I am the very model of a modern Major-General”, “When the foeman bears his steel”, “With cat-like tread” and “A Policeman’s lot is not a happy one.” Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts now have a great opportunity to hear Sir Arthur Sullivan’s captivating music coupled with W. S. Gilbert’s biting wit in this exciting concert version of PIRATES. Entrance is free, though there is a suggested
donation of £5 to help defray expenses. Refreshments will be served during the interval. Don’t miss what promises to be a delightful afternoon! (More details on www.norwichgands.co.uk)
will be available and the event starts at 10.00 am until 4.00 pm.
WROXHAM & HOVETON LIONS CLUB
Wroxham and Hoveton Lions Club CIO
I do hope that despite the drought and heatwaves in our area you have had an enjoyable summer. Many people have said to me that they did not like the heat, which is understandable. However, we may have to become accustomed to higher temperatures in future, and we are fortunate to live where we do. The flash floods in Nepal and Tibet has led to a disaster on several levels, and I am pleased to tell you that Lions Clubs International is already raising funds to help the survivors. It’s what we do, as Lions, to help where and when we can. We held another of our popular Jumble Sales on 3rd September at Place UK. I will let you know when the next one is to be held. I can also tell you that the Charity Shop in the Riverside Centre in Hoveton has had a very successful summer, so thank you to everyone who visited and bought something, and please keep coming back! A big thank you to our staff and volunteers for your great work, we could not do what we do without you. We do need some new volunteers, so if you have some spare time and would like to be part of our team, please do contact us. I must also issue an apology. I gave you the wrong date for our next Craft Fair. It will be on Sunday 13th September, not 14th, as I originally wrote. I took this information from our website, wroxhamandhovetonlions.org, without checking the date myself, so apologies to all who may have been confused by my error.
That is all for this month, so do take care. Derick Bowler, PR Officer
