WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS CLUB

Our next big event will be our annual Charter Night, celebrating the Club’s original founding, which takes place on 22 nd June followed by handover night when our new President Peter Hawes takes over at the start of the new Rotary year on July1st.

Our next major fund raiser is our Classic Car show which takes place at Wroxham Barns. It gets bigger and better every year so although it is still a few weeks away make a note of the date now –Sunday 6th September - and be sure not to miss it.

Our regular Monday evening meetings continue with outside visits, business meetings and a varied and interesting programme of speaker meetings, all at Wroxham Barns. Please let us know if you fancy coming along. You can also support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line at www.communityatheartlottery.com and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause – or you can support us directly by visiting our page on the www.totalgiving.co.uk web site.

I hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather, despite one of the May Bank Holiday days feeling as though Winter had returned!

We had a stand at the Horning Boat Show on 2 nd May, which had good weather. Our stand sold items associated with boating and we also had a football skills game, with both children and adults honing their soccer skills. We had a couple of Lions distributing information about becoming a Lion.

Apart from our usual Business Meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings this month does not have many events. So, it is a short article this month. However, we held another of our Jumble Sales on Thursday 14th May, at Place’s Farm.

We are having a stall at Roys of Wroxham Membership Display on Saturday 13th June. This will offer you another opportunity to find out about becoming a Lion. We welcome enquiries about membership and look forward to seeing you there. Don’t be shy, we may be Lions but we don’ t bite!

WHERRY YACHT CHARITY UNIQUE WORKSHOP

For centuries, the Norfolk Wherry has been more than just a boat - it has been the artistic soul of the Broads.

trast of the black sails against the vibrant marshlands.

As the Victorian era progressed, the rise of railways saw trading wanes, prompting a dramatic evolution. Enterprising captains converted their working vessels into luxurious pleasure wherries to cater to a new wave of Victorian and Edwardian tourists discovering the Broads. To ensure passengers ’ clothes remained clean, the tarred sails were replaced with pristine white canvas. Artists quickly gravitated to these "white -sailed" vessels, capturing their elegance. Renowned artists like Leslie L.H. Moore, who produced iconic watercolour scenes in the early 20th century, frequently painted these leisure scenes.

By the Edwardian period, pleasure wherries, such as the famous Egyptian themed Hathor commissioned by Norfolk ’s Colman family and built in 1905, had become moving works of art themselves, often featuring opulent interiors. These picturesque vessels became a mainstay in art galleries, cementing the wherry as a symbol of both commercial heritage and leisure. Today, the few remaining wherries are treasured by artists, maintaining a 200 -year legacy of beauty on the water.

The relationship between wherries and art began in the early 19th century, with members of the renowned Norwich School of Artists, such as John Crome and John Sell Cotman, frequently featuring them in landscapes as essential elements of Norfolk life. These early works captured the dramatic con-

Those seeking a hands -on approach with their art have an opportunity to take part in a plein air sketching workshop hosted by Norfolk artist, Emily Bird. Emily has always been inspired by her deep love for the Norfolk coast and countryside, and her work often captures the moment when light falls perfectly upon the landscape. She will be leading the workshop on 22nd June on the staithe at How Hill overlooking our flagship wherry, Hathor. The event will commence at 4.30pm with tea and cake. Spaces are limited to 12 seats, and costs only £20 per person. Being just a day after Father ’s Day this would form a unique gift for any budding artist. Booking is therefore essential at www.wherryyachtcharter.org

WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION

After our committee meeting in May, we think we are pretty ready for our 44 French guests from La Pommeraye and Montjean -surLoire, who are with us 9th -15th August 2026 and we have a good programme of events; reception at Broadland School, visit to Cromer with a little town quiz, river trip from Wroxham, games and dinner dance at Hoveton Village Hall, gin and rum distillery tour etc. Our hosts also have a free day to entertain their friends so, I expect boat hiring, shopping at Roys and other local attractions will benefit from their visit.

A date for diaries is Friday 24th July for pre - visit briefing and social evening in Wroxham to which all members are invited, hosting or not, our usual bring -aplate buffet. All members will also be able to participate in events during the August visit and will get details about them soon.

ly offered to set up a Facebook Page for our Twinning Association so look out for that soon to learn more about our friendly group and what we do. It’s so nice to be in contact with other countries and cultures in this rather fractured world of ours at the moment.

In May our book group read “The Mystery at Rake Hall ” by Maureen Paton chosen by Marie. We are still using Zoom for our distant and less able members but hopefully will have a get -together or two over the summer, as we all enjoyed our lunch at Fizz and Fromage in March. Some of our Twinning members also benefit from French Conversation there, at Fizz and Fromage, on Thursdays 2.304.00pm.

A WHERRY MERRY

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM AND A WONDER OF WHERRIES EXTRAVAGANZA

Wherry Yacht Charter is collaborating with both the Museum of the Broads and How Hill Trust to bring a unique opportunity to enjoy the very best of the Norfolk Broads for one week only this July.

Starting on Tuesday 14 July, one of the three remaining wherry yachts will be stationed at the Museum of the Broads, Stalham. Guests can book a two-hour experience that offers a full package: a sail on a wherry yacht to Barton Broad, a ride on the museum’s steam launch Falcon or electric launch Marsh Harrier, and access to the museum itself. Tickets are on sale now for just £38 per person at www.wherryyachtcharter.org. The wherry will remain at the museum through 15 and 16 July, available for viewing free of charge.

On Thursday 16 July, A Wherry Merry Night At The Museum promises an exclusive evening of fun at the museum from 5pm onwards. A Wherry Yacht will be open for tours and fifty-minute boat trips will be offered on Falcon or Marsh Harrier, followed by musical entertainment from the wherry charity’s resident lounge singer, Andy G. Delicious, freshly baked pizza will be available to purchase on site, and a bar will be close at hand. Tickets cost £12 per person, and places are limited, so early booking is advised at www.museumofthebroads.org.uk.

Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July see the return of the ever -popular Wonder of Wherries event. This year it will be hosted at the majestic How Hill, just outside Ludham, and, due to overwhelming interest, will run for the full weekend.

All five wherry yachts and pleasure wherries will come together, making for a spectacular occasion on the staithe. Short sailing experiences will be offered from 10am daily on the wherry yachts for just £15

per adult or £7.50 per child. Threehour Cake & Sail experiences will run both morning and afternoon on the pleasure wherry Ardea for £45, which includes tea, coffee and, of course, a delicious selection of cakes. Advance booking is highly recommended to secure your place at www.wherryyachtcharter.org.

The beautiful Egyptian -themed wherry Hathor will also be available for the public to view free of charge, although small donations to support the maintenance of these historic vessels are always welcome.

How Hill House will be open to explore, including its beautiful gardens. There will be live musical entertainment in the grounds, together with various stalls selling the best of Norfolk produce, arts and crafts.

To bring the celebrations to a finale, Sunday 19 July will feature special guest performances on the staithe from Sirens of the Helm at 3pm Norfolk’s only female shanty group and vocalist Sandra B at 5.30pm, entertaining audiences with musical covers spanning the decades. This entertainment is free for all to enjoy.

WYC Trustee Director Judith Keogh says:

“Wherry Yacht Charter is indebted to the support of both the Museum of the Broads and How Hill Trust. We are especially grateful to all the wonderful people who are supporting our charity this summer. I urge members of the public to join us at How Hill to celebrate our wherries in such a stunning riverside location. Bring a picnic, and hopefully the weather will be kind to us! There is no charge, but donations towards the charity’s running costs are always welcome.”

THOMAS BLONDEVYLE BLUNDEVILLE

1522-1606

Of the numerous school subjects’ readers experienced at school, the one least likely to be forgotten, might be Maths. Consisting of Algebra, Fractions, Geometry; Logarthyms; Mental Arithmetic; Times Tables and more, in my schooldays, Geometry always seemed more interesting than the others.

In this branch of the subject, extra equipment including compass; divider; ruler and set square were used to solve various ‘problems ’. There was also one more - the Protractor have deliberately added to the list at the end. Why? I hear you ask? Answer - because I’ d like to share with you, my latest discovery of yet another ‘Norfolk First’. This was the invented by Thomas Blundeville, a 16th century native of Newton Flotman, 7 miles south of Norwich on the A 140, between Tasburgh and Swainsthorpe. Newton means "new town" and the village was already wellestablished when it was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086). 'Flotman' is said to have been taken from a ferryman across the Tas, but it may have been just a local person’s name.

Born in Newton Flotman, Thomas became a brilliant mathematician and was renowned for his scholarship, writing about logic, astronomy, education and horsemanship.

Although devices for measuring angles were already known to have dated back to ancient Egyptian times, the ‘ modern protractor’ was first described and used by Thom-

Thomas was mathematics tutor to households including Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Nicholas Bacon and also to Sir Francis Wyndham. He wrote books on horsemanship, navigation, science and logic, was a poet and a pioneer writer of the English language.

He died in 1606 at Newton Flotman and was buried on 8th February that year at the late 14th century St Mary’s church in the village. Inside the church is a wall - mounted memorial to him and shows three generations of the family. Below it, is this text: -

BROADLAND MODEL RAILWAY CLUB

Since our last missive, we have been quite busy. “Broadland” was shown at the Norwich Model Railway Club event in Hellesdon as was a club members layout “Rampage” where it won “ Best in Show”. “Herrington” was shown at the Swaffham Railway Reflections Event and just recently, another club members layout “Endeane” was show at the Norfolk & Suffolk Narrow Gauge Modellers Open Day in Beccles. We certainly do get about!

We have also held our Annual General Meeting, the entire committee was re-elected, the club finances are in good shape and we have plenty of plans for the future. Now, it’s all hands to the pumps getting ready for our own Model

Railway Show, coming up on the Late May Bank Holiday Sunday (May 24th) at the Poppy Centre in Stalham, with club layouts and guests plus traders stands. Full details are on our website so please check regularly.

We are a very active group and we are very fortunate in having 24/7 access to our club rooms, something few other clubs have. A number of us take advantage of this to work in a group or alone outside our regular sessions on a Tuesday and Friday evenings. It would be entirely possible to have other sessions on other days to cope with the demands and full members can have keys so they can gain access at any time.

Please do check our website for latest news and contact details if you wish to find out more about us and the opportunities to join us https://

One of our members has also kind-

ly offered to set up a Facebook Page for our Twinning Association so look out for that soon to learn more about our friendly group and what we do.

WROXHAM AND HOVETON LIONS CLUB

The relationship between wherries and art began in the early 19th century, with members of the renowned Norwich School of Artists, such as John Crome and John Sell Cotman, frequently featuring them in landscapes as essential elements of Norfolk life. These early works captured the dramatic con-

trast of the black sails against the vibrant marshlands.
