How safe are your finances as the pound hits a record low?
The pound reached a record low against the dollar at the end of September 2022 and has caused many Brits to worry about how their finances might be affected. With the pound hitting its lowest value since 1971, how safe are your finances?
The dramatic drop came about after ex-Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng announced further tax cuts, as well as a multi-billion-pound energy price cap and a reversal of a national insurance increase. Despite a recent government U-turn, the latest ‘mini-budget’ announcement has resulted in the Bank of England increasing interest rates, and in turn the pound has plummeted against foreign currencies.
Will this affect my finances in the coming months?
Due to the turbulent political and financial climate, you will likely notice the effect of the falling pound despite its treacherous climb back in recent days. There are some key areas you may see more affected than others, so we’ve broken down the main ways the slump in the value of the pound may affect your finances
Fuel and gas
so this news will cause many of us to start worrying about the safety of our finances.
Mortgage repayments
If companies choose to pass higher costs onto their customers because of increased inflation, the cost of living will increase. This includes mortgage repayments, and for those on a tracker or variable mortgage rate this may result in monthly costs going up.
Those who don’t have a mortgage may still feel a sting in the cost of housing, as higher interest rates can cause lenders to increase fees on credit cards and loans. This will in turn tighten monthly budgets and make it harder to pay for essentials like rent and bills.
Goods and services
In contrast supermarkets may have bought stock in advance, meaning that they may be less likely to increase prices straight away.
Businesses that sell their products abroad may actually see some positives from this situation as foreign buyers look to capitalise on the cheaper prices, which may give a boost to smaller companies who have struggled in the aftermath of Brexit.
Holidays abroad
As the pound dips against foreign currencies, holidays abroad will become more expensive, especially if you’re planning a trip to the US. Exacerbated by the price of fuel and food, many Brits may decide to postpone their winter break this year.
On the flip side to this, holiday makers coming to the UK will have a cheaper time, which in turn may boost the UK tourism industry and provide some financial growth in the travel sector.
Technology
As fuel is traded in dollars, a low pound will force the price of petrol and diesel in the UK to increase. We are all acutely aware of the rising price of gas and electricity,
The cost of goods and services will continue to increase if the pound continues to fall. How much your weekly shop increases by will depend on whether businesses decide to pass these costs on to their customers, and what your shop includes. For example, the price of beer could rise significantly as it is mostly imported from Europe and the US.
As most of our tech is manufactured abroad, a weak pound will cause foreign-made products to increase in price. In fact, Apple has already increased the price of its latest iPhone range by 16% in the UK. It’s expected that other tech manufacturers will follow suit and we may see an increase in the price of many gadgets.
