Who do you trust?

In 2018, the John Lewis Partnership launched a service called Home Solutions. They announced, “The John Lewis Home Solutions service allows customers to source and book trusted tradespeople for a wide range of services, including gardeners, electricians and painters, all of whom have been vetted and approved.” Four years later and there’s little sign of the service at all.3

The retailer is not the first big organisation to try to break into the home services market in this way, nor are they the first to find it didn’t take off.

There are a number of reasons why householders don’t feel the need to approach a middleman for jobs around the home, but the uplift on the cost is one of them. Local traders don’t have long travelling time or high fuel costs to cover when quoting and carrying out the work or vice-versa if it’s a business that you travel to.

Of course, you do want the assurance that somebody is going to do a good job. Small businesses rely on their reputation for repeat business and word will soon spread in a community if a rogue trader is out there.

Keep it local, keep the cost down and build your own network of trusted tradespeople in your community. This magazine is a great place to begin!

PATIENT

PARTICIPATION AND FRIENDS OF COLTISHALL & SPIXWORTH SURGERIES

After another year of inactivity, with sadly very limited opportunity to boost funds for the purchase of equipment for both of our local surgeries, the PPFGroup have presented the accounts for 2021 to the Group. The Accounts were subsequently approved.

Details of the Treasurers’ report for year ended 31 December 2021 can be found on the Surgery website in the section “Patient Participation and Friends Group - PPFG Accounts”.

May we again offer our sincere thanks to Keith Owen for providing us with his time and expertise in the examination and production of the income and expenditure account.

The Groups’ account balance at 31.12.2020 was £2621.00. Overall income in 2021 was £1000.00 which was set against expenses of £1557.74, which resulted in a reduction in the end of year balance in the account to £2063.26.

Donations totalled £1000.00 - this figure represented a significant increase compared with the previous year. As always, all donations to the Friends are very gratefully received and acknowledged to the providers, and have supported valuable equipment purchases for both Coltishall and Spixworth Surgeries.

For the second year running, Books and Puzzles sales have been hit badly by the covid restrictions. Unlike last year when, for the first two months of the year, we saw good sums raised until the lockdowns came along, resulting in the restrictions at the Surgeries, this year has seen nothing raised at all. We can hope that, with a potential further improvement in the covid situation, the Books and Puzzles may be able to reappear. It was recently decided by the Surgery Partners that a reintroduction of the sales at the present time wouldn’t be appropriate owing the ongoing restrictions, however, this is being kept under regular review.

Expenditure for the year included the following significant items:

*Compact Camera

*LED Examination Wall Light

*Water Cooler Maintenance for Coltishall and Spixworth

*50% of Cryogenic Maintenance

Despite the Friends having received a reduced income during 2021, apart from the donation of £1000.00 which we were delighted to receive, the Surgeries have still been able to purchase significant and important items for both Coltishall and Spixworth for the benefit of patients and, although once again, at a reduced level, have a

good account balance to take into 2022.

It is now over two years since we have had the opportunity to hold an actual meeting for the Group members, but it is hoped that this will be possible in the near future. In the context of membership, we are always looking for new members, and should you be interested, you are able to either register on the website or alternatively, contact the Practice Manager.

ROYS CELEBRATES DONATING OVER £45K TO CHARITY IN 2021

The past year has been tough for everyone and charities have been affected especially hard. A lack of donations and an exceptional demand from those in need has left a shortfall for many organisations caring for our communities.

Roys has been helping alleviate some of the shortfall in funds by donating to those groups in need. The company has donated to 179 charities and good causes in 2021 totalling over £45,000.

Paul Roy Buying and Marketing Director comments, “Roys were able to donate to 179 charities and good causes during the year, these include the stores chosen charities of the year, almost 20 from the Making a Difference Locally Fund and over 100 in responses to requests for help. We’re very lucky to be in a position to be able to help the communities that have kept the business growing over the past 125 years. The teams in each store choose their charity of the year, often they are charities that are close to their hearts for many reasons. The money donated is not also a way of saying thank you to the charities and our customers but also to our ever hardworking team members.”

The charities of the year took home a share of £29,156. This money was raised through the sale of 10p carrier bags in stores, the East Anglian Air Ambulance received a massive £10,378 from Wroxham

Food hall. Other Charity of the Year donations include £1675 to Nelson’s Journey from Roys of Beccles, £1333 to The Bridge in Sudbury from Roys of Sudbury and £5121 to Priscilla Bacon Hospice from Roys of Bowthorpe.

The Making a Difference locally donations totalled £10,250. This money was raised through the sale of grocery products in store and was donated to local charities and good causes in the surrounding areas that need financial help for projects beneficial to the community. In 2021 donations varied from £100 to £1000 to groups such as Ludham Primary School, The Clare School, St Luke’s Church Centre and 1st Dereham Scout Group.

“We are always looking for charities and good causes that are in need of help, if you are part of a group looking for funds and are situated within 10 miles of a Roys store then please do get in touch by sending an email to enquiries@roys.co.uk” - Paul Roy.

THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK - at the heart of our community!

PATIENT PARTICIPATION

AND FRIENDS OF COLTISHALL & SPIXWORTH SURGERIES

WHERRY ARCH

Those with long enough memories may recall a song often heard on 1950’s & 60’s radio programmes, called “The Railroad Runs Through the Middle of the House”.

Written in 1956 by Bob Hilliard, it was subsequently released as a Single record.

But locally in one part of Broadland, is a property whose construction could also fit this title but only by exchanging Railroad for Waterway!

For what appears to have been built as a red-brick two storey house between Barton Turf and Irstead, spans a section of waterway which flows through and beneath its centre! Known as Wherry Arch, the property was intentionally designed and built to be high enough for wherries to pass underneath it, but only with lowered masts. In its heyday, this aquatic passageway enabled trading wher-

ries to load their wares from above or to reach other onward destinations.

Records suggest the property was more likely to have been an early 19th century barn used for storing grain. Thought to have served Grove House - a nearby Georgian farmhouse - Wherry Arch has also been suggested by some as a possible waterway folly.

The four-bedroomed property is now a bookable Broadland holiday residence, situated in secluded and unspoiled woodland. Unusually perhaps, one bedroom has no direct access to the main building except via balcony. As a building of architectural and historic interest, it also became Grade ll Listed on 12th May 1987 together with other properties in the locality.

PLATINUM JUBILEE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Across Norfolk, plans are advancing to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year. Towns and parishes are arranging beacons to be lit on 2nd June. Street parties are being organised for The Big Jubilee Lunch (2nd – 5th June extended bank holiday weekend). 1,500 schoolchildren and adults will sing and perform in A Royal Salute at the Royal Norfolk Show on 29th & 30th June. And people are signing up to take part in the Platinum Jubilee Challenge Awards throughout the year

And businesses can get involved too. The Lord-Lieutenant’s organising committee is actively seeking partnerships with local businesses, to enable staff to take part in activities and celebrations, and to raise money to benefit communities across the county. The Platinum Jubilee Fund has been established to support the costs of all the events and activities in Norfolk, as well as provide a legacy fund administered by the Norfolk Community Foundation, distributed according to the principles of the County Lieutenancy: ‘To offer active support to the voluntary, commercial, social, and spiritual lives of the citizens of Norfolk.’

Examples of partnership opportunities include: Company branded certificates for those completing the Challenge Awards, or entering a team of staff to take part in the Awards; Company branding on 1,500 performers’ tabards for A Royal Salute, supporting the filming and distribution of the performance with associated branding; Become a Trail Patron for one of the new Platinum Jubilee Trails across Norfolk, install branded QR codes on Trails linking to historical and environmental information; or many other options. Opportunities for

staff engagement are considerable, from these examples to lighting a beacon, or organising a street or office party for The Big Jubilee Lunch.

Supporting businesses will benefit from extensive public exposure through the website www.platinumjubileenorfolk.org, which will be the main information hub for all Platinum Jubilee activity in Norfolk, and dedicated social media channels (@jubileenorfolk on Twitter, @platinumjubileenorfolk for all other channels). They will also get access to exclusive events, and invitations to a Grand Reception at the Royal Norfolk Show, hosted by HM LordLieutenant of Norfolk, The Lady Dannatt MBE.

Recent Chair of the Norfolk branch of the Institute of Directors, Michael Harrowven JP, who is supporting the Lieutenancy in setting up these partnerships, said: “This Platinum Jubilee year presents a fantastic opportunity for businesses to really position themselves at the heart of their communities, engage their staff, fulfill their corporate social responsibilities, raise their profiles, and celebrate their resilience after a challenging couple of years.”

Chair of Norfolk’s organising committee, Deputy Lieutenant James Bagge, said; “As well as all the individuals, community groups, schools, councils and others coming together, we really want to partner with the business community and touch every aspect of society in Norfolk to celebrate the life and achievements of a remarkable person, Her Majesty The Queen.”
