Welcome… to the latest edition of THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK!

So, it’s Autumn; School Half Term, the end of British Summer Time (31st October), Halloween (31st October) and Guy Fawkes Night (5th November), Remembrance Sunday (14th November) all await us.

There are always future diary dates of course, and the next edition will take us into Christmas & New Year. Let’s remember to live in the ‘here and now’ though - it’s scary how quickly time goes isn’t it?

Should it be time to get a few things fixed around the home, please consider the benefits of sourcing locally; when you call the flourishing business services you find inside this magazine, you’re directly making a contribution to our local economy.

We regularly hear from readers who are delighted with products and services they've discovered via this handy magazine - which reached its 15th anniversary this summer. To be frank, we were so entrenched in lockdown, we forgot to celebrate or recognise this fact! We truly value your kind messages and would like to say a heartfelt “Thank You!” for your ongoing support. Enjoy October & November!...

WHERE IS FISHLEY?

Travelling along the B1140 from South Walsham towards Acle, it may not become obvious that you briefly pass through part of a ‘lost’ village.

Emparkment whereby the Lord of the Manor living in his grand House or Hall has evicted the local population from his immediate vicinity. A wall has then been built around the Lord’s newly claimed territory and his former neighbours accommodated in the ‘new’ village, beyond. Three examples of this are evident in Felbrigg, Holkham and Houghton and there are more!

When a village becomes ‘Lost’, telltale signs of where it was or might have been, often remain. The most obvious would be a church ruin but in true Norfolk “we dew different” style, Fishley made a come-back!

also brought back to life. Today, the property is better-known as ‘An Enchanting Wedding Venue, Retreat and Working Farm, on the Norfolk Broads’.

After passing Church Road (a leftturn to Upton) you’ll soon notice on the same side, the premises of Hugh Crane Cleaning Equipment. Immediately after this, is a turning which separately leads to Fishley parish church and further on, to Fishley Hall. This route also soon reveals no nearby houses.

Both Fishley and nearby Upton were listed in the Domesday Book. Included in the Walsham Hundred, Fishley’s recorded population of 33.3 households in 1086, placed it in the largest 40% of recorded settlements. Fishley also recorded three Manors, for which each ‘holder’ was separately listed as both Tenant in Chief and Lord of the Manor.

1st Manor:- Abbey of St Benet at Holme.

2nd Manor:- King William.

3rd Manor :- William of Ecouis.

Records suggest St. Mary’s parish church was built in the late 13th century, but it’s western round tower is most likely of Norman date.

Scattered all over Norfolk, are remains of numerous villages, considered ‘lost’ for various reasons. These include Desertion; Plague, Soil Exhaustion and more. One of the more curious has been

The ancient parish disappeared when its church fell into ruin and what little remained was united with nearby Upton. But, Fishley came to life again in 1861, when St. Mary’s parish church underwent a major restoration. The local community was also revived but with a sparse population, it must be assumed that St. Mary’s largely depended on the Hall, for its parishioners. The church can seat around 100 and has two services a month. The hand-pumped organ dates from 1781 and was previously in Fishley Hall. On 25th September 1962, St Mary’s became a Grade II Listed Building. Today, there’s no village around or anywhere near the church which is otherwise set amidst 350 acres of rolling farmland.

You may be familiar with the words of a hymn beginning ‘Three in One and One in Three’. Obviously not intentionally connected with Fishley, the words once became very appropriate. For not only did Fishley village and its church become revived, so did the Hall.

The 17th-century Manor House set in 350 acres and steeped in history, dates back to 1600. Apart from romantic stories of secret tunnels and smugglers, it was once owned by an Admiral and also by Roger Pepys, cousin to the famous diarist Samuel Pepys. By the 1980’s the Hall was roofless but in 2016 was

But long before today’s visitors arrived, it seems the Hall was once frequented by Royalty. That’s because King John is said to come hunting at Fishley during his reign (1199 to 1216), on the Fishley estate.

If you’re still unsure where Fishley is / was, here’s another indicator. Still heading towards Acle after Hugh Crane’s, a large house is set back from the road on the left, shortly before Acle begins. This was built in 1875 for the rector of the local parish and served as the rectory for many years. By the 1980’s, it had become the Fishley Manor Hotel & Country Club, with a telephone number of Acle 377. Subsequently becoming Mannings Hotel & Restaurant, the property closed and was sold in 2006. Today, it’s in private ownership. © Chris Weston, October 2021

AYLSHAM CHESS CLUB

Two of Norfolk’s best known chess players have married - having first met across the chessboard.

Martin Walker has had a long and illustrious chess career. He is a FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs / World Chess Federation) ‘Master’ and is an internationally qualified chess tutor with his own chess consultancy. Whenever possible he plays chess for Norwich Dons Chess Club.

Heather and Martin Walker at their wedding reception

Heather is relatively new to chesshaving previously ‘challenged herself intellectually’ by speed-solving Rubik cubes. Over the last few years Heather has become a regular player at Broadland and Aylsham Chess Clubs.

The new Mr & Mrs Walker are looking forward to married life together and the resumption of the Norfolk chess season in October. Others interested in finding out more about playing chess locally should visit the Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) website: www.norfolkchess.org - which includes details of all of Norfolk’s NCCA league clubs.

John Wickham (NCCA Chair) commented: “I have known the happy couple for many years and believe they are a ‘perfect match’. Heather and Martin getting married has brought a great deal of joy to the whole Norfolk chess community. We wish them well for a long and happy marriage and for continued success at the chessboard.”

Is your pet pawing at its eye? Does it have a green discharge? Is your pet’s eye bulging? Sometimes, it’s difficult to determine when a condition is serious enough to take your pet to the vet, however, when it comes to eyes, even minor symptoms can be signals of serious eye disease.

Whenever a pet shows any signs of discomfort near or observable changes to their eyes, we would advise they need to be examined as soon as possible. Most eye problems are simple, but even simple problems if left can result in permanent changes to the eye. These are the warning signs to check your pets for.

#1. Does your pet have eye pain?

Some signs are obvious, such as squinting or closing the eye, tenderness to the touch around the eye, or pawing and rubbing at the eye, as is a protruding third eyelid, or a swollen and inflamed eyelid. However, some signs can be more subtle such as increased light sensitivity or an increase in tear production. Eye pain can also result in a loss of appetite and an increase in whining, or just becoming grumpy.

#2. Have your pet’s eyes changed in appearance?

Noticeable differences in the animal’s eyes may indicate a problem, sometimes the size and shape of the eyeball has changed - are both eyes symmetrical? Check for redness or an increase in the number of blood vessels on the sclera (the white of the eye). Has the iris changed colour - even if just a small part of it. Check their pupilsdo they look the same - beware if one eye is in brighter light, that pupil should be smaller! Does their

Eye Problems in Pets

pupil look much bigger or smaller than usual - both can be a sign of trouble. Are there any changes in the cornea such as loss of clarity or transparency? - even if just a small part of it is affected it can become very significant.

#3. Eye discharges:

Any discharge from the eye can be a sign of a problem. Some pets have a permanent watery discharge and tear staining, we call this epiphora and is commonly associated with insufficient drainage of the tear film from the eye. If you notice any discharge that is thick green or yellow, or any increase in mucoid discharge this is a sure-fire sign of a problem, and it is worth having it checked.

#4. Is the surface of your pet’s eyeball smooth?

Any obvious alterations in the shape of the eye, lumps, or deficits on the surface of the eye, masses on or around the eyelids are all likely to be significant. It can be difficult to fully check beneath eyelids, so if in doubt leave it to your vet.

#5. Do your pet’s eyes appear unusually sunken or bulgy?

Either change can be a sign of problems within or behind the eyeball, neurological problems, or problems with the eyelids. The best

way to check for these changes is to look at their eves from above and check your pet’s symmetry.

#6. Is your pet losing vision?

Have you noticed your pet bumping into things? Are they more wary going out at night or have they become snappier and jumpier? All these can be signs of vision loss. Vision loss can gradually develop but sometimes can be very sudden - in either case an urgent vet check is needed as not all causes are permanent if treated early.

What should you expect from your vet?

Our vets will ask you questions about your pet - some of the questions may seem unrelated, however many eye problems are a symptom of another disease entirely! They will then proceed with a thorough examination of your pet, including a thorough eye examination, which may include checking your pets tear production, an examination with an ophthalmoscope, using dye to check for damage to the cornea, checking the pressure within the eye (looking for glaucoma). We may even photograph their eyes. Some cases are also examined in the dark, to test their vision - very occasionally we even perform ultrasound examinations on some eyes!

Ultimately, we feel it is best to be safe rather than sorry whenever an eye is involved, although most problems are simple such as an infection or even a grass seed lodged under the third eyelid, some apparently simple problems can rapidly progress and lead to permanent vision loss, potentially even the loss of the eye if treatment is delayed, so if your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms, call us right away on 01603 783920.

Rosie Howell on 01603 737762.

WROXHAM BURE VALLEY ROTARY CLUB

Our Classic Car Show at Wroxham Barns on Sunday 12th September was a great success. A huge thank you to all exhibitors who brought along their cars, over 65 cars attended, and it was a terrific array of all sorts of classic cars. The Wroxham Barns visitors also turned up in large numbers, everyone enjoying the fine sunshine and the excellent display. We expect that the overall total raised from the cars and the 50:50 raffle, plus the generous matching promise from Barclay’s Bank will be over £1500. Our charities for the day included the Nancy Oldfield Trust, Rotary Foundation, End Polio Now and Shelterbox.

Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club has an interesting and exciting programme for October, with Zoom speakers, a ten pin bowling social night, and meetings at Wroxham Barns activity ahead. Also we are already starting to plan our Christmas Santa activity, and hope Santa will be joining us as early as the 29th November and then helping us right through to 23rd December. We expect to be continuing our regular community service, including working at the vaccination centre at Hoveton village hall when

required. Last month several of us attended a volunteers thank you tea at the Hotel Wroxham, for which we would like to say a big thank you.

Don’t forget you can support us and the many local and international charities we donate to, through the Broadland Council Lottery Scheme – simply go on line www.communityatheartlottery.com and sign up, selecting Wroxham Bure Valley Rotary Club as your chosen cause. It is a weekly draw and you chose how much to invest. 50% of proceeds go to your selected charity and there is a chance to win up to £25,000 every week. Alternatively you could come along to one of our meetings to find out more about us, and maybe even join us and our many and varied activities. We already have a number of potential new members about to join.

Meantime, we hope everyone stays safe and remember, in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you fancy joining us for a vibrant, sociable, active, and fun club experience, please contact our president, Peter Milsted, on 01603 782733 / 07850 742337.

WHB TWINNING ASSOCIATION

We haven’t managed any more face-to-face social gatherings yet but hopefully can arrange something between now and Christmas. Our friends in La Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-Loire are, likewise, still being careful but hoping, like us, that they can come over next year for our doubly postponed Twinning get-together. Speaking to other members of NATC, the Norfolk Association of Twinning Committees, we’re all in the same boat, rather in limbo, where overseas visits and visitors are concerned. Book Club continued on Zoom on September 15th for “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman: our hostess, Marie, joined us from France, so we couldn’t go to her house. Even when we do meet again, we will still have some members “zooming” in , some for health reasons and others geographical.

WROXHAM & HOVETON LIONS CLUB

We are pleased to announce that this month, Sun 31st Oct at 10am, we will be holding our first Craft Fair since the start of the pandemic, in the Broadland Youth & Community Centre. Do you want to have a stall? If so please contact Terry Vout on 07850 091570. Lots of good quality crafts and goodies will be there to browse and refreshments, including Bacon butties will be available. It will be great to see everyone again so come along. With the projected shortage of goods for Christmas you might find that elusive present or a gift just that little bit different. Would you like to win £1000 worth of John Lewis vouchers in October and the additional chance of winning £25000? For a chance of winning whilst supporting our charity, sign up by visiting the Community at Heart Lottery page by at: https:// www.communityatheartlottery.c om/support/wroxham-andhoveton-lions-club

OR scan the QR code (see right). We’re constantly on the lookout for any goo, clean and undamaged Bric a Brac, toys, books, as well as clean clothing for our shop in the Hoveton Precinct. You can drop

items off during shop opening times, preferably in the morning before the shop opens between 9 and 10am. For those unable to take items to the shop we can collect. Please ring the shop on 01603 783737 to arrange collection.

Why not join the largest charity service organisation in the world. Volunteering is rewarding as it gives you the satisfaction that you’re giving something back to the community. We always need volunteers to help in the shop or to lend a hand as a Friend of Wroxham and Hoveton Lions. If you are looking for a welcoming and friendly club environment, we’ll be happy to give you more information. Please ring me on 01603 781310, or our Membership Chairperson Lion Lydia Spight on 07503 221485.

You can follow us on Facebook or our website. We, look forward to seeing or hearing from you.

… to the latest edition of THE WROXHAM & COLTISHALL BOOK!

So, it s Autumn; School Half Term, the end of British Summer Time (31st October), Halloween (31st October) and Guy Fawkes Night (5th November), Remembrance Sunday (14th November) all await us.
