Sayings about opportunity abound in all languages, in all cultures, in all eras. Ancient Romans coined the phrase “carpe diem.” Seize the day. Some opportunities are discovered and pursued. Some are missed. Others are created. Others are the result of people who provide them for others. The Wabash Valley Community Foundation offers three opportunities for donors to establish endowed scholarships for higher education: Discretionary, Designated and Advised. All three are designed to open doors for deserving students. Community Foundation staff assists potential donors in creating the kind of fund that best supports their goals. Designated scholarships are paid through the educational institution to students who are selected by the school, often to students within a specific department designated by the donor. They can be custom designed to suit a donors wishes. The Charles F. and Nancy A. Bradford Scholarship Fund provides support for a senior student studying accounting at the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University. The Fund is specifically intended for students who live in, and went to high school in Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion or Vigo counties in Indiana.

Mark Bradford, whose parents provide the name for the fund, said his family wanted to do something to honor the legacy of Charles, who retired as President of Sackrider & Company in 1996. “My mom really spearheaded it,” Mark said. “She was the driving force.” The family chose Indiana State University because of their long connection to it. Charles and Nancy were both active in the community throughout their professional lives. Nancy, Mark and his sister Susan are graduates of the College of Business. “We’re big fans of the School of Business,” Mark said. C O N T I N U ED O N pag e 2 >

Their scholarship is intended for a senior student. “It’s to make sure they can get to the finish line – to give them a boost as they get to the finish line,” he said. Mark added that he and his siblings worked to convince their mother that her name belonged on the fund, as well. Brandon Sparks, Donor Scholarships & Constituent Relationships Manager at ISU, said scholarships like this serves at least two vital purposes. “It reduces a student’s tuition bill, something our donors are passionate about,” he said. “They also serve the institution by giving them additional recruitment tools to attract students.” Sparks said there are currently 11 funds held by the Community Foundation that are granted to students through the University’s scholarship selection process. Howard Unger established a fund at the Community Foundation to honor his late wife Sallie, who passed away in June 2000 after a 13-year battle with cancer. He said before she passed she told him to carry on with opportunities to help others. “Flowers are fine,” he remembers her telling him, “But there’s a better use for those kind of contributions.” The Sallie Unger Scholarship Fund supports deserving students at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, where
she had been a trustee when her cancer was first diagnosed. Howard explained Sallie’s desire was to create “. . .something that helps young people, especially those dedicated to the life of Christ. That’s why I pushed so hard to create it.” Howard’s words about his wife describe a superhero. The facts build the case. She became involved in the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant after he was appointed to help organize it for the State Fair Board. He laughed when he said they told him, “We gave it to you because we were sure she could get the job done.” She was still undergoing chemotherapy during her first year involved, but that didn’t stop her. “She wasn’t afraid to take things in hand and just go for it,” he said. She took their children wherever they needed to go, once as far as Denver, Colorado, to support their participation in 4-H, and she stayed involved in their church.“That was her talent, to deal with young people, especially young ladies.” Her legacy lives on as support for students furthering their education. Opportunities come in many forms. They say if it doesn’t knock, build a door. Or better still, build a door for others.

Available in Scholarships! Students planning to attend college next year may apply for scholarships ranging from $100 to full tuition, administered through the Community Foundation for the benefit of residents in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties. Scholarships, including multi-year awards, are available for students throughout the Wabash Valley who plan to be enrolled in the 2023-2024 Academic Year. In addition, up to four full-time, four-year scholarships will be awarded to graduates of accredited high schools in, or residents of Clay, Sullivan or Vigo counties who will enter college for the first time in the fall of 2023. To determine your eligibility for the various scholarship opportunities, you may review the criteria prior to completing an application via wvcf.org/applyonline. The application is available now and will close promptly at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.
