Welcome to WA-WM Recreation & Community Services

Dear Members of the West Allis-West Milwaukee Community,

I would like to thank all of you for your openness and support during my first year as Superintendent of the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District. There were many interesting challenges but with your support and input we are moving our district forward in a positive direction. We have covered a lot of ground but we still have a long way to go and your continued involvement is key to our success. We are committed to educating the whole child and ensuring that each and every student in the WAWM Schools receives a quality education that will make them career and/or college ready and be prepared for life after their K-12 education.

Just as we are asking our students to be life-long learners we also ask that our community members take the time to partake in enrichment opportunities offered through our Recreation and Community Services Department. Our Recreation Department offers something for people of all ages and we encourage you to challenge yourself to grow not only physically but also mentally.

I am confident that you’ll find something of interest when you review the Activity Guide. There are many wonderful opportunities for you and your family and we hope to see you in one of the programs we offer.

Aqua Boot Camp is a high intensity water workout that combines calisthenics, cardiovascular conditioning, core and muscle strength building along with swimming. This class innovatively uses the unique buoyancy, resistance, and movement of water.

Aqua Boot Camp offers a challenging workout that pushes individuals at their own pace.

Ability to swim is recommended but can include non-swimmers, and other aquatic exercisers.

This class will kick your rear!

American Red Cross “Learn to Swim“ Lessons Parent & Child and Levels 1 - 6

**SAFETY FIRST - IMPORTANT INFORMATION**

• All children must be at least 4 years of age to attend lessons on their own and MUST meet the height requirement for each specific pool from the bottom of your child’s feet to their chin in the shallow end.

Parent & Child classes are exempt from the height requirement. o Frank Lloyd Wright - 36 inches chin to toes o Nathan Hale - 38 inches chin to toes • Class length will be 50 minutes, except Semi-Private is 30 minutes.

• Swim goggles recommended for levels 3 - 6.

• Individuals must be potty trained in order to enroll in all programs. No Swim Diapers Allowed.

• If you have any questions regarding swim level classification contact Cory Thompson, Program Manager at 604-4959.

• Fees are $30 / $45 NR with the exception of Semi-Private which is $40 / $60 NR.

Swim Level Classifications

Our lessons are taught by American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors. Please read swim levels carefully and check height requirements to assure your child is in the correct level.

The WA-WM Rec Dept. reserves the right to move your child out of a level for their own safety.

Water and air temperature are regulated by the District’s Facilities & Operations Department, not the Recreation Department. They make every attempt to maintain a pool temperature of 82 degrees.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Beginning water skills introduced such as getting face wet in the pool, blowing bubbles, front and back float and glides.

Children ages 2 and up that are toilet trained. Absolutely NO swim diapers of any kind are allowed.

Pool Regulations

1. Per state code, all swimmers must thoroughly rinse off in the shower before entering the pool.

2. Swim caps are required of all swimmers whose hair is long or controlled by hair spray or oil. Caps are sold at pool for $2.

3. Do not bring valuables to pool. The Recreation Department is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

4. Any swimmer who has entered kindergarten must use their respective male/female locker room.

5. Strollers must be kept out of pool area for child’s safety. Please carry child or use child carrying device.

6. Use of cell phones and electronic devices is prohibited in locker rooms.

7. Street shoes are not allowed in pool area. Shoes must be removed.

Level 1 Introduction of Water Skills

For first time students who may be fearful of the water or need to gain confidence and be more independent in the water. Some skills worked on are bobbing in the water, back floats and submerging face in the water.

This sing-along musical activity group is designed for children and their parents or caregivers. The class incorporates traditional children’s songs, finger play, rhythm instruments, and dance movements as well as puppets that help tell a story within the songs. Our goal is to give children an interest and love for all kinds of music. Bring your dancing feet and join us for a fun family class!

Ages are recommendations not restrictions. Families with multiple children can sign up for the same class. Classes are priced per child not per family.

Children love to run, run and run some more! Join your child in a class where we will use their energy and love of running to learn through play! We will have a short circle time, sing songs and enjoy lots of time running and playing games. Children will release some energy, practice listening to instructions and begin socializing.

It’s ballet time! If your child loves to dance, watch ballet, twirl, and play, this is the class for them. The youngest ballerinas will enjoy bonding with parents and building a love of the music and playing games to learn more about ballet. The older ballerinas will continue to build their love of ballet, learning positions together and playing games to practice them. Boys and girls are welcome!

TotWorks is an introduction to a classroom setting for toddlers and preschoolers. Each class focuses on a story and extends your child’s learning with opportunities for artwork, fine motor skills, and body movement.

Snowplow Sam (Levels 1-3) 4 - 5 years

No experience needed for this beginner ice skater program. This is a progression series of three levels that will teach the fundamentals of skating to children with little or no skating experience. Hockey Skills 5 years & Up

Start your child on their journey by introducing them to the fundamentals of ice skating. These classes are intended to serve skaters of all disciplines. If your child has no previous skating experience, the student should register for Level 1. The students will be evaluated in the first class to gauge their skill/ability level and are placed in another class level if applicable.

General Mitchell: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, October 22 - April 1 *Rehearsal: March 29 & 30 **Recital: March 31 & April 1 Dance classes help students develop coordination, range of motion and increased physical fitness through strength, flexibility and endurance. Additionally, social awareness develops as students dance together and begin to recognize themselves in relation to others. Self-discipline and self-confidence are developed as students learn technique and explore their own creativity.

Creative Movement classes introduce young dancers (ages 4-6) to a structured environment, where they learn the basics of dance and classroom etiquette, which can be applied to any dance form. Classes allow children to recognize their own individuality and body mobility as they learn to control their bodies and share the space with others. Children will work on large motor skills, spatial awareness and flexibility in creative and imaginative ways. Focus is on a broad movement concept and coordination and rhythm develop as children explore movement and music through games and exercises. The young dancers will use pom pons, scarves, and various other props to help them stay engaged and learn the basics of movement in a fun and enjoyable setting. Basic dance steps are introduced, though the majority of the class is on broader objectives (balance, dynamics, musicality, etc.)

Trixters Gymnastics Nathan Hale Upper Gym Tu, Th 9/20 - 12/15 (No class 10/27, 11/22 or 11/24 )

This is an instructional gymnastics program for boys and girls ages 4 and older. Participants will develop skills on the uneven bars, balance beams, vault and the floor. We offer classes with a ratio of 10 students per coach which promotes more individualized attention, making each class limited to a total of 40 participants.

Skill tests will be done to determine which group each participant will be assigned to.

Girls should dress in a leotard and boys should wear a snug-fitting t-shirt and shorts. Any individual with hair that is chin length or longer must have their hair tied back. **Parents are not allowed in class as there is limited space.

Parent visit days will be assigned.

Youth Gymnastics / Baton

This class is geared to the 3 to 6 year old that has not had any previous baton experience. Not sure if your child is interested in performance or baton twirling?

This class is a general overview of baton and other props that would be used in a half time show. In this introductory level class they will be exposed to a few different elements to twirl, manage or dance with. It is a great “taste” to see if your child would be interested in something more.

Diamond Twirlers offers group classes for ages 4 through adult in areas of baton twirling and half-time show classes. Baton twirling is an excellent way of developing hand-eye coordination, rhythm, timing, poise and gracefulness, endurance, self-discipline and overall coordination. Classes are taught a dance style routine to perform at the end of the year showcase event.

Classes begin in January and continue through the end of March. Last class of the session is offered as our showcase event for parents and others to see what the students have learned. Costumes are an optional purchase item for this event.

Our Baton and Half Time Show teams start their practices in January and continue through July. Our competitive baton and show teams perform at a minimum of two competitions a season. To be a member of one of our teams, you need to contact our instructor Kathy Kugi-Tom for a placement on a team. We accept all ability levels. Costumes, batons and props are required for this group, we do offer fundraising opportunities to defer some of the select costs.

Afterschool Action 330

Elementary After School Program

We want your kids to have fun! WA-WM Recreation & Community Services Dept. offers Afterschool Programs located at most elementary schools. Action 330 runs Monday - Friday when school is in session, from the end of the school day until 5:30 pm.

Action 330 is a recreation based program keeping kids active and socially engaged. Participants check in, receive a daily nutritional snack and then programming begins. Daily activities include supervised play, organized gym/outdoor activities, and arts & crafts. Participants are able to leave once checked out by their designated parent or guardian.

Afterschool Action 300

Intermediate After School Program

A fun way to end the school day! WA-WM Recreation & Community Services Dept. offers after school programs located at all Intermediate Schools.

Action 300 runs Monday - Friday when school is in session, from the end of the school day until 5:30 pm.

Action 300 is a recreation based program. As part of the program participants will receive a snack, have the opportunity to engage with friends and have access to gyms and outdoor areas. Action 300 participants are able to leave once checked out by their designated parent or guardian or with a signed permission slip allowing them to leave independently.

Out of School Time Programs

Behavioral Expectations parallel school expexctations, participants who do not adhere to behavior expectations may be dismissed from the program. When calling in an absence/change of plans at your school please state that the Action program should be notified.

Chair Yoga is designed to meet the specific needs of senior adults and is structured to benefit everyone at any level of health and fitness. Free agents are individuals who have not been able to form a team of their own but are looking to participate. On occasion there are teams that are a person or two short, or there are individuals looking for a team to play on. That's where our free agent program comes in! If you are an individual looking for a team, contact Dustin Smith at smitdu@wawmsd.org 414-604-4938 to register as a free agent. Your free agent contact information may be provided to teams that request it and it will also be made available at the manager’s meeting prior to the season. Joining the free agent list does not guarantee placement on a team.

Calling out graduates from West Allis Central, Nathan Hale, West Milwaukee or Learning Center, get your team together and enter the 2016 Alumni Men’s Basketball or Women’s Volleyball tournaments. You do not have to be a former player on your high school team. Players just need to be a graduate of one of our district high schools. Get your high school friends together and become part of this year’s tournament. The dates for this year’s tournament are December 27th and 28th.

The Men’s Basketball tournament will be comprised of two divisions.

Division I will be made up of teams graduating from the same high school and year from 2006 - present. Division II will be made up of teams graduating from 2006 - 1996. Teams must be formed from the same high school and may combine two consecutive years in the 1996 2008 graduating classes. Division III, prior to 1996, teams may combine as many years as needed. This years basketball tournament will be held at multiple locations throughout the district.

Women’s volleyball teams can combine high schools and years as needed to form a team.

Aikido is one of the best kept secrets in martial arts. Pronounced ahy-kee-do, Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense employing locks, throws and holds and utilizing the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent’s momentum to work against them. It is a mix of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Join district educator Matthew Fanning, a member of the Midwest Tomiki Aikido Yudanshakai, in learning the proper technique of Aikido. There will be tumbling involved.

Just like other martial arts, Aikido is a ranking system and students can earn rank as they study this style of martial arts.

West Allis Players

The West Allis Players will be presenting the screwball comedy, “Lend Me a Tenor� by Ken Ludwig.

Tito Merelli, a famous tenor comes to Cleveland in 1934 for a one-night performance as Otello. After arriving late and getting bad news, he is accidentally given a double dose of tranquilizers and falls deeply asleep. The opera house manager, unable to locate Tito's low pulse, assumes he is dead and presses his assistant to don a spare costume and make-up to impersonate the singer. When Tito comes to, he puts on his own costume and heads for the opera house. Two Otellos running around, two women chasing them -- a rousing and romping good time and a real audience favorite!

Show times are 7:30 pm October 7, 8, 14, 15 and 2:00 pm October 16. All performances will be held at West Allis Central Auditorium. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students and $8 for children 12 and under may be purchased at the door, at the Rec Dept. office, or online at www.wawmrec.com. The Suburban Concert Band

The Suburban Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Mark Grauer, is an instrumental music organization sponsored by the WAWM Recreation & community Services Department. Performance outlets are offered through our Concert Band, Swing Street Big Band, and small ensembles. The bands perform six to eight concerts a season and rehearses Thursday nights during the school year (September-May) at Nathan Hale. The Concert Band and Big Band are open to musicians 16 and over.

Portable Volleyball Equipment

Residents will be able to rent portable volleyball equipment for personal use through the West Allis - West Milwaukee Recreation & Community Services Department. The package includes a volleyball net, poles and volleyball. You will need your own hammer to drive the stakes supporting the poles into the ground. The volleyball net will set up on any grass area. The cost for a 3 day volleyball package rental will be $20 plus a $100 refundable security deposit. Equipment pick up and drop off available Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Reservations are taken on a first come first served basis.

Registration

The policy of the WA-WM Recreation Department is to refund registration fees only under the following circumstances: 1. A refund request form must be completed at the Recreation Department office.

2. 24 hours or more prior to the start of a class/program, a full refund will be given minus 20% service fee, if a refund check is requested. To avoid the 20% service fee, class/ program fee can be credited to your account for future use.

3. Less than 24 hours prior to the start of a class/program, but prior to the start of second half, 50% refund will be given for credit or refund.

4. After the first half of class has passed, no refunds will be given.

5. Separate refund policies apply for Adult Sport Leagues, Non-School Day Camps and Youth/Adult Trips.

Photography Policy

The Recreation Department occasionally uses photos of participants for promotional purposes. By registering for the program you have granted us permission to use your photograph for promotional purposes unless otherwise noted. *Child care available for Hatha Yoga only as a trial.

Child Care

Child care is not provided for adult programs. Children are not permitted to attend adult programs without supervision of another adult who is not actively participating in the program.

Confirmation Notices

Your receipt is your confirmation. You will not receive additional confirmation of program registration. Please provide an email address for receipt to be sent or if you prefer to have it US mailed, you will need to include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your registration. Transfer requests will be honored up until one week prior to the start of class if openings exist. Requests for transfers made less than one week prior to the start of the class enrolled in, may result in a $5 service charge and need to be made in person.

Activity Guide

Activity Guides can be viewed at www.wawmrec.com, at each of the district schools’ office, health department, library, city hall & West Milwaukee Village Hall. The Recreation Department publishes 3 activity guides per year which are mailed to WA-WM District residents. The Fall activity guide is mailed early August. The Winter-Spring activity guide is mailed early December and the Summer activity guide is mailed early April.
