Riverton's Aydin Witherspoon The final season of high school football brings added motivation for Riverton's Aydin Witherspoon, who is focused on making every moment count alongside the teammates he's grown up with.

“I’m most excited to play with all my friends one last time and see how far we can go,” Witherspoon said.

Witherspoon has spent the offseason preparing for what he hopes will be a memorable senior campaign. His summer has centered on speed and strength training, giving

him the physical foundation to make an impact in multiple facets of the game.

While he has already established himself as a dynamic playmaker, Witherspoon knows there is still room to grow.

Improving as a passer has been one of his top priorities heading into the season.

“I think I could work on throwing,” he said.

“I’m going to be doing a 7-on-7 so I can work on throwing and seeing the field.”

individual goals include eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards while adding at least 500 passing yards, 200 receiving yards and another 600 yards on returns.

Those numbers would make him a threat in every phase of the game, but personal statistics

are secondary to what he hopes Riverton can accomplish as a team.

“My goal for this season is to make this last year count,” Witherspoon said. “As a team, I think our goal is to shock our town and show them what we can do.”

Baxter Springs heads into 2026 encouraged by a roster that returns almost the entire team from last season, when the Lions finished 4-5 under head coach Jeff McCoy. With only two seniors gone from 2025, McCoy believes this will be the program’s deepest team in recent years at virtually every position.

The staff’s stated goals for 2026 are simple but demanding: “Stay healthy, just win.” With a veteran coach, a strong core of returning starters and a challenging but manageable TVL and district slate, Caney Valley appears positioned to remain a factor in its league race and push for another postseason berth if it can maintain health and consistency through the fall.

Last Season: 4-5

“We return pretty much the whole team from last season for the most part as we only had 2 seniors last season. As long as we keep focused on each day and winning each day with Maximum Effort, Great Attitude, and Toughness everything else takes care of itself. I am a strong believer in this mindset. This will be our deepest team from previous years in every position on the field as far as depth,” McCoy said.

The staff continuity should help that philosophy stick, with assistants Austin Williams, Tim Parrish, Kyler Cook and Bill Buck all back on the sideline. Baxter’s 2026 slate features home dates against Frontenac, Girard, Caney Valley and Riverton, plus key road tests at Quapaw (Oklahoma), Cherryvale, Galena and Columbus.

With experience stacked across the depth chart and a full year of development for a largely intact roster, the Lions expect internal competition in practice to raise the standard on both sides of the ball. That combination of depth, returning production and a demanding schedule gives Baxter Springs a chance to push into the upper tier of its district this fall.

CANEY VALLEY Last season: 9-2

Caney Valley enters 2026 looking to build on a 9-2 campaign under longtime head coach Criss Davis.

Experience is a clear strength. Caney Valley lists a deep group of returning starters and key contributors across the board: quarterback Layne Denny; backs Jace Buckley and Traxcyn Garton; fullback/defensive end Boone White; linemen Jace Wren, Austin Freisberg, Anthony Ranes, Ethan McElwain, Angel Martinez and Keith Ellison; tight ends Jacob McVey and Drake Roberds; receivers/DBs Konner Paulie and Huck Seger; and defensive linemen Benton Spillman and Sam Denton.

CHANUTE HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 5-5

Chanute enters 2026 aiming to take the next step after a 5-5 campaign under head coach Clete Frazell.

The Blue Comets will lean on an experienced core of returning starters to navigate another demanding schedule.

The staff lists a deep group of key contributors back, including two-way playmaker Jalen Duncan at defensive back/running back and lineman Karter Naff on both sides of the ball. Quarterback/ linebacker Gage Frazell returns to run the offense and direct the defense, with athletes like Bo Small, Kysen Seamster and Kasen Audiss providing options at wide receiver and linebacker/defensive back.

Chanute also brings back physical presence up front with Braddox Bancroft and Clint Cooper on the line, plus hybrid H-back/defensive lineman Brier Alonzo. A large group of newcomers led by skill players Krew Follmer and Derrick Walls and several young linemen will push for snaps and bolster depth.

“The 2026 Chanute Blue Comets lost some talented players due to graduation, but will return a host of key contributors during the 2026 season,” Frazell said. “The key for this team will be development during the summer and leadership emerging from the junior and senior classes. The recipe for success with the 2026 Blue Comets will be hard work and having a great summer to put them in position to be a very good team.”

Hester likes the blend of experience and youth as Cherryvale tackles a retooled district that now includes a senior-heavy Baxter Springs squad along with veteran groups at Caney Valley and Riverton. With a small senior class and talented sophomore and freshman groups that were undefeated in middle school, the Chargers believe last year’s reps for their underclassmen will pay off under the Friday night lights in 2026.

COFFEYVILLE-FIELD KINDLEY Last Season: 0-9

Coffeyville-Field Kindley moves into 2026 determined to turn the page after an 0-9 season in 2025.

The Golden Tornado scored just 20 points and allowed 467 a year ago, but return 31 players, including 10 starters on offense and 10 on defense.

Last Season: 5-4

That experience matters in a program that leaned heavily on freshmen and sophomores in varsity roles, giving a young core valuable snaps against varsity competition.

The staff has emphasized that they “owned” last season’s results all offseason while also recognizing how different this year’s group feels internally.

COLUMBUS HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 2-7

Columbus returns looking to bounce back from a 2-7 finish in 2025 under head coach Blake Burns.

Burns and his staff emphasize that improvement starts Monday through Thursday, stressing that breakdowns on Fridays can be traced directly to practice execution and energy. The Titans plan to sharpen attention to detail and internal accountability, focusing first on their own effort, focus and response to adversity.

Offensively, Columbus will operate out of a spread look, while the defense will remain multiple to adjust to opponents and situations.

Burns expects an attack-oriented identity in all phases, with the Titans playing fast, aggressive and physical while executing with confidence and belief in each other and the game plan.

ERIE HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 0-8

Erie heads into 2026 looking to reset under head coach David Pitts after an 0-8 campaign in 2025.

Erie’s recent slate has been unforgiving, with last year’s schedule featuring losses to Eureka, Caney Valley, Humboldt, Jayhawk Linn, Southeast-Cherokee, Uniontown, St. Marys Colgan and Pleasanton. That experience against quality opponents gives a young roster a clear picture of the standard required to compete in one of the state’s more physical small-school leagues.

Pitts’ long tenure in coaching and growing familiarity with the program provide a steady hand as the Red Devils continue their transition in the 8-Man ranks.

With a full offseason to address

Southeast Kansas Capsules fundamentals and depth, Erie’s focus will be on translating better weeks of preparation into more competitive Friday nights in 2026.

FORT SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 3-6

Fort Scott enters 2026 looking to climb back above .500 under head coach Johnathan Stark after a 3-6 season that ended with a first-round playoff loss to Tonganoxie. The Tigers bring back four offensive starters and five on defense, plus 14 returning lettermen, in the rugged Southeast Kansas League.

Offensively, Fort Scott leans on its split veer identity and a backfield headlined by junior running back Creed Clayton and senior fullback/ linebacker Paxton Allen. Clayton rushed for 739 yards and seven touchdowns at 5.4 yards per carry, earning first-team All-SEK and honorable mention all-state honors, while Allen added 470 rushing yards and was a second-team All-SEK fullback.

Senior quarterback/linebacker Dredyn Marlow returns after starting the final four games of 2025, giving the Tigers a bigger passing threat to balance the veer. In the trenches, senior lineman Brodie Stoughton (10 tackles for loss) and junior tackle Terron Nutter provide experience up front, while a deep group of potential starters will battle for remaining spots.

Defensively, Fort Scott sticks with its 4-2-5, anchored by senior leaders at all three levels in Allen, Stoughton and defensive back Shai Kennedy, a second-team All-SEK DB with two interceptions and six pass breakups.

With a schedule that again features Paola, Parsons, Independence, Pittsburg, Labette County, Chanute, Wellington and Coffeyville, Stark is counting on improved line play and an experienced backfield to push the Tigers back into the postseason conversation.

FRONTENAC HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 8-2

Frontenac returns a loaded roster from an 8-2 district championship team. The Raiders bring back 23 lettermen and multiple two-way starters on both sides of the ball as they chase another deep run.

Senior receiver/defensive back Brock Wiemers is a headliner as a returning starter at both wideout and in the secondary. Up front,

senior lineman Ethan Merrick anchors the offensive and defensive lines, while senior Bryce Hill adds another veteran presence in the trenches.

The backfield features senior returnees Jake Murphy and Luke Sneed, with Murphy back at running back and Sneed starting both at running back and outside linebacker. Senior Jacob Murphy and junior Payton Armstrong provide additional punch at linebacker, giving the Raiders a physical second level.

Depth is a clear strength, with a long list of seniors, juniors and sophomores competing for roles at receiver, linebacker, defensive back and the line, plus an incoming freshman class of 18 that arrives with significant success at the junior high level. Miller notes that after an outstanding regular season in 2025–26, the Raiders fell short of their postseason expectations, and that has fueled offseason work as players look to carve out significant roles and push Frontenac further in 2026–27.

HUMBOLDT HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 3-6

Humboldt looks to rebound in 2026 after a 3-6 campaign that still included a first-round playoff appearance under head coach Logan Wyrick. The Cubs have been a consistent factor in recent years with multiple regional titles, and they return 5 offensive and 6 defensive starters along with 14 lettermen.

Offensively, Humboldt sticks with its power spread, with junior quarterback Ty Shaughnessy returning after a season-ending injury in Week 2 and junior Gavin Gunderman back as a versatile runner/receiver who was pressed into emergency QB duty late in 2025.

Senior Broc Ivy moves from receiver to running back after totaling 168 rushing yards, 124 receiving yards and 55 tackles with 13 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, giving the Cubs a twoway tone-setter.

Junior fullback/linebacker Owen Sicka (36 tackles) and senior defensive lineman Cooper Peters (21 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 3 fumble recoveries) help stabilize the front seven. Junior receiver Kolton Hanson returns after posting 13 catches for 170 yards and

2 scores, while defensive back Luke Coronado (11 tackles, 1 interception) gives Humboldt experience in the secondary.

Wyrick acknowledges major losses, including all-state captains Mason Sterling and Mark McCullough, but believes a large group of injured contributors from 2025—such as Mason Miller and Weston Johnson—will bolster both lines.

With a strong JV pipeline and several young defenders like Tucker Wrestler stepping into bigger roles, the Cubs aim to blend health, returning production and a new “Tite 3 High” defensive look into another Tri-Valley title push.

INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 3-6

Independence looks to turn close calls into wins in 2026 after a 3-6 campaign in which the Bulldogs were competitive in nearly every game but came up short on key late drives. Head coach Kendall Fiscus returns more than 13 starters and contributors as Indy pushes toward the top of the Southeast Kansas League.

The Bulldogs will again operate out of the Gun T on offense with a 4-3 base defense, leaning on a large core of returning two-way athletes.

Quarterback/defensive back Javen Colbert headlines that group, joined by versatile H-back/linebacker Reece Reichenberger and a veteran offensive line with Brayden Littlepage, Noah Edington, Logan Peschka, Ian Martinez, Jeremiah Melugin and Kendrick Penn all back up front.

On the perimeter, Independence brings back multiple playmakers in receivers/defensive backs Amare Brown, Joel King and Maddox Purvis, along with backs Kaeson Lewis and Kumari Jay, who will share carries and defensive roles.

Defensively, that same core forms the spine of a unit that aims to finish drives after last year’s near-misses against league rivals.

“This year, Independence Football is looking to build off of the momentum that we built from last season… we want to use that experience, alongside returning over 13 starters and contributors, to make our push for the top of the SEK. The key… is to not be satisfied with close losses, but to work in the off-season

IOLA HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 2-7

Iola enters 2026 with as much returning experience as head coach David Daugharthy has ever had, coming off a 2-7 season where a late offensive surge hinted at bigger things. The Mustangs run a spread offense with a 4-2-5 defense and bring back nine offensive and ten defensive starters, essentially returning starting experience at all 22 spots.

Junior quarterback/linebacker Reed Clift is the centerpiece after accounting for 910 passing yards and 12 touchdowns through the air plus 392 rushing yards and four scores on the ground, earning honorable mention Pioneer League honors at QB. Senior playmakers Austin Crooks (579 receiving yards, 4 TDs), Jase Herrmann (327 receiving yards, 4 TDs) and Kale Pratt (218 rushing yards, 224 receiving yards, 8 total TDs) give Iola multiple explosive options in space.

Up front, the Mustangs return four of five offensive linemen, including all-league honorees like Alston Nelson and Franklin Kerr, while defensively they bring back their top seven tacklers led by Kevon Loving (51 tackles), Clift, Pratt, Roy Gordon, BJ Seance, Herrmann and Crooks. A late-season switch to Clift at quarterback helped Iola average 35 points over the final four games, and Daugharthy expects that continuity plus a move from a 3-3 to a 4-2-5 defense to translate into a more balanced team.

LABETTE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 9-3

Labette County rides into 2026 off the best finish in school history, a 9-3 season that ended as sub-state runner-up to Bishop Miege and included a SEK title. Head coach Bradley Argabright brings back six offensive starters, five on defense and ten total lettermen as the Grizzlies look to prove last year was no one-off.

The offense again centers on senior running back Deontae Fields, a 4A first-team all-state back and SEK MVP who rushed for 1,409 yards and 14 touchdowns at 6.5 yards per carry with seven 100-yard games.

Last season: 5-4 Neodesha enters 2026 with the look of a team ready to climb after competing well in its final season in a 3A district and returning 12 starters with multiple years of varsity experience. Head coach Nathan West believes this experienced group has the potential for a very successful year if it can put everything together.

The Bluestreaks move forward as a 2A program in the Tri-Valley League, running an I/Flexbone offense and a 4-2-5 defense. Offensively, junior quarterback Tayte Leck returns after throwing for 1,098 yards and 11 touchdowns, while senior playmakers Camryn White, J’Vonte White, Jayedin Huckabey, McCoy Cody and Lauklon Roebuck give Neodesha experience and versatility at the skill spots. Cam White rushed for 420 yards and four touchdowns while adding 21 catches for 265 yards, and J’Vonte White plus Huckabey both contributed as runners and receivers.

Defensively, the returning core is just as strong. Cam White piled up 114 total tackles, J’Vonte White added 14 tackles for loss and five sacks, Huckabey produced 47 tackles with two interceptions, and linemen/ box defenders Tyson Jarvais, Jack DeLong and Jacob Novotny all 8

OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 7-3

Oswego comes off a 7-3 season in 8-Man Division I, including 4-1 marks in both Three Rivers League and district play, under head coach Matt Fowler. The Indians return nine lettermen and a strong core of five offensive and six defensive starters as they chase another postseason run.

Oswego’s identity remains rooted in a single-wing offense and 3-2 defense, built around a physical front and downhill backs. Senior linemen Tucker Wimp and Kadyn Reeves and senior nose tackle Zakkary Gambrel give the Indians size and experience up front on both sides of the ball.

In the backfield, senior running back/linebacker Chance Mills and junior running back/defensive back Demitri Williamson return as key playmakers, joined by multiposition threat Deonta Williamson at running back and linebacker.

Fowler emphasizes program goals of playing hard-nosed, physical football, making the community proud, and improving daily in and out of season.

Key points of emphasis include a strong summer in the weight room, building depth with solid numbers, managing disciplinerelated factors and winning the turnover battle. With a schedule featuring Marmaton Valley, St. Paul, Crest, Yates Center, West Elk, Erie, Southeast and Central Burden, Oswego expects better tackling and a sharper defense to help sustain its recent success.

PARSONS HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 3-6

Parsons enters 2026 with a foundation built around line play, as

head coach Jeff Schibi’s club returns solid pieces on both sides of the ball from last year’s 3-6 team. Schibi believes the Vikings’ strength should be up front after four sophomores logged offensive line snaps in 2025 and now return as juniors.

That nucleus is led by junior linemen Xander Gabbert and Jaxson Knapper, who posted 22 and 16 pancake blocks, respectively, and should anchor a more physical offense. Senior quarterback Andrew Houk is back after throwing for 544 yards and five touchdowns, while junior Preston Heitman also gives Parsons experience at quarterback after contributing 167 passing yards, one touchdown and a rushing score.

Junior receiver/defensive back Aundre Ford and junior running back/linebacker Kane Leon are key returning skill pieces as Parsons tries to replace graduated offensive playmakers Chandler Hentzen and Wyatt Shultz. The Vikings plan to stay multiple on offense, working from 10, 11, 12, 21 and 22 personnel packages to keep a balanced runpass approach while getting the ball to their playmakers.

Defensively, Parsons will base out of 4-4 and 4-3 looks, with senior defensive back Jakarre Green returning after 29 tackles, one interception and seven pass deflections. Gabbert adds punch up front after recording 22 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack, while Schibi expects a large junior class to step into leadership roles around a small senior group with only five returning players carrying varsity experience.

PITTSBURG HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 4-5

Pittsburg heads into 2026 looking to take a step forward under head coach Josh Lattimer after a 4-5 campaign. The Purple Dragons return five offensive and five defensive starters, giving a solid core of experience in a triple-option, flexbone attack.

Senior utility standout JaMarcus Davis is the focal point after stepping in at quarterback following Week 3 while also contributing at running back and defensive back.

Up front, seniors Alex Hinspeter and Garret Dillingham anchor the line and tight end spots, while junior quarterback/defensive back Jeremiah Lattimer and backs Landen Proffitt and Christian Krogen round out a backfield-heavy skill group.

Defensively, Pittsburg will again base out of a 4-3 with multiple fronts and coverages, leaning on linebackers Ashton Bauder and Hinspeter and defensive ends Dillingham and Dawsyn Mooney.

In the secondary, veterans Kordae Hayes and Max Busch return to stabilize the back end.

RIVERTON HIGH SCHOOL Last Season: 5-5

Riverton returns a dangerous backfield and deep senior class from a 5-5 team that reached the second round before falling to Caney Valley.

Head coach Danny Weaver’s Rams operate out of a spread offense with a 3-4 defense in the rugged CNC. Senior Noah Parker, a 1,000-yard rusher and 94-tackle defender, teams with senior quarterback/ running back Aydin Witherspoon, who topped 900 rushing yards after moving to QB following Week 3. Witherspoon’s development at quarterback and Parker’s dual-threat ability give Riverton a potent onetwo punch.

Outside, senior receiver/safety Tyler Reitz and versatile slots like Riley Greer, Bo Crowder and Tripp Witherspoon give the Rams multiple options in the passing game and perimeter run game.

Up front, seniors Grady Thomas, Cameron Quick, Rolan Watkins and Jared Moran return to anchor an experienced offensive line, with finding a new center the key puzzle piece after four-year starter Brock Ross graduated.

Defensively, Riverton brings back nearly its entire back seven, highlighted by a linebacker corps of Slate Wells, Parker, Eli Ludwig and Crowder. Weaver points to overall roster growth—returning 30 of 34 players and adding a large freshman class—as a strength, while noting that replacing two all-conference defensive linemen and navigating a typically brutal CNC slate will be critical challenges.

White will once again be counted on as one of Neodesha's most versatile players after contributing on offense, defense and special teams a year ago. He carried the ball 86 times for 420 yards, caught 21 passes for 265 yards and finished with 1,135 allpurpose yards.

White has spent the offseason making sure he is ready to build on that success. Between team weightlifting sessions, football camps and position-specific training after Monday workouts, he has focused on sharpening every aspect of his game.

"In the offseason I have been attending weights and as many football camps as I can, also going to position-specific training after weights on Mondays," White said.

While his numbers suggest a standout defender, White believes there is still room for improvement, particularly in pass coverage.

He believes the schedule presents an opportunity for Neodesha to put together a special year.

"Some goals for the team this year is to go 8-0, which is very possible with the schedule we have been given and what our team has the ability to do this year," White said. "Individually, I want to log another 100-plus tackle season with a few interceptions mixed in there, as well as rush for 1,000 yards on the ground."

"I have been wanting to fix my pass coverage the most this year," he said. "At my football camps my biggest worry was getting back into reading my tackles and guards and deciding pass or run and how to get into my coverage."

Independence's Reece Reichenberger The final ride has arrived for Independence senior Reece Reichenberger, and he plans to make every Friday night count.

After spending nearly a decade playing alongside many of the same teammates, Reichenberger is embracing the opportunity to finish his high school career with the players he has grown up with.

While the season will be emotional, he believes the group's chemistry and experience could make it one to remember.

"This season I am most excited for one last season with all the guys," Reichenberger said. "We have been playing together since about third grade, and while it's bittersweet, it's going to be a lot of fun going to battle on Friday nights one last time."

One game already has his full attention.

"I am also super excited to play Labette County at their place," Reichenberger said. "As we all know what happened last year when we played them, and we are ready to

do it again. I have that game circled on the schedule along with many of the guys on the team."

Reichenberger has spent the offseason preparing for those moments by committing himself to the weight room. While camps and on-field work have been important, he believes strength will be a deciding factor for the Bulldogs this fall.

"The main thing I've been doing this offseason is staying in the weight room every day," he said.

"We've gone to some camps and put the work in on the field, but staying in the weight room will be a factor in the games we win this season."

"Being fast off the ball and getting to your gap is key in being able to be an elite run-stopping linebacker, and that's what I want to be," Reichenberger said. "Being undersized at my OLB position is already a disadvantage, so I've definitely put on some muscle and I'm seeing good progress in the weight room."

"Coach Fiscus and Coach Rose have been great in coaching me to get better on and off the field," Reichenberger said.

Reichenberger produced on both sides of the ball last season, finishing with 56 total tackles, one sack, three tackles for loss and two interceptions while also catching 17 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers earned him second-team All-SEK honors at linebacker and all-area honorable mention recognition.

His goals for his senior season reflect his desire to contribute in every phase of the game.

"My individual goals are to make first-team All-SEK and first-team all-area honors and to lead the team in tackles," Richenberger said. "I also want to lead the team in receiving yards and receptions.

Other personal goals I have are becoming a better leader and setting an example that everyone can follow on and off the field."

Chanute's Jalen Duncan After helping Chanute build one of the most successful stretches in program history, senior Jalen Duncan is ready to make the most of his final season in a Blue Comets uniform.

Duncan enters the season with a new role, a renewed focus and a goal of helping Chanute continue its run of success. After spending much of his career at running back, Duncan will transition to the slot position while also taking on a larger leadership role for a team looking to capture another Southeast Kansas League championship.

“I am excited to be able to go out with my coaches, friends and teammates for my senior year and compete for another league championship,” Duncan said.

“I have been attending weights 4 days a week (Monday-Thursday) and spending Fridays doing 7 on 7,” Duncan said. “I have also had multiple team camps this summer.”

“This season I am making the change to slot instead of running back, so with that change I am hoping to improve my receiving skills,” Duncan said.

Duncan also understands the importance of his role away from Friday nights. As a senior, he wants to become a stronger voice within the program and help younger players continue the tradition Chanute has built.

“I would like to become a more vocal leader and become a mentor to the younger players in our program to continue on the success of recent years,” Duncan said.

Despite being limited to just over half of the season last year, Duncan made an impact when he was on the field. In five and a half games, he recorded 62 carries for 354 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry, while scoring four touchdowns. He also added four receptions for 53 yards, averaging 13.25 yards per catch.

This season, Duncan’s biggest individual goal is simple — staying healthy and being available for his teammates from start to finish.

After rushing for 1,409 yards and 18 touchdowns during his junior campaign, Fields enters the 2026 season eager to build on that success while helping the Grizzlies chase another Southeast Kansas League championship.

Fields proved to be one of the area's most dynamic offensive weapons last season. He carried the ball 216 times for 1,409 rushing yards while averaging 136.9 yards per game. He also added 55 receiving yards and 179 kickoff return yards to finish with 1,643 all-purpose yards and 18 total touchdowns.

"I've been going to summer weights and it seems everyone is dialed in and ready for the season to come," Fields said. "I've been to a couple camps and I've been to some training with people like Sharp Performance."

While physical training has been a priority, Fields believes the biggest strides have come mentally. Competing in 7-on-7 events against top programs has expanded his understanding of the game and helped sharpen his decisionmaking.

"I'm wanting to improve on my knowledge for the game of football," Fields said. "I've been working on my patience

and more of my athletic ability.

During 7-on-7, doing that really helps you get to learn from other people at all the other big schools, and I think they've taught me some stuff I didn't know about. I really appreciate it from them."

As one of the team's veteran leaders, Fields knows his responsibilities extend beyond producing big plays. He wants to serve as a role model for the younger players while continuing to improve each week.

"Some of the goals I have this year are just to get better every game, be a leader for the underclassmen and do even better than I did last year," Fields said.

Individual accolades would be welcome, but Fields' primary focus remains on team success.

The Grizzlies have set their sights on another Southeast Kansas League title, and Fields is determined to help make that goal a reality.

"For the team, the goal is to always win an SEK title," Fields said. "That's what the team has their mind on, and that's what we want to get done once again."

Neodesha's J’Vonte White The excitement surrounding his senior football season goes well beyond the wins and losses for Neodesha’s J’Vonte White. It's about sharing one final campaign with teammates who have been by his side since childhood.

"What I'm most excited about this upcoming season is getting to play my senior year with my friends and teammates that I've been playing with since my middle school years," White said.

"It's special to have one more chance to be on the field with those guys."

White has spent the offseason making sure he's ready to make the most of that opportunity.

His summer schedule included attending camps, participating in 7-on-7 competitions, lifting

weights, practicing and putting in extra workouts to prepare for what he hopes will be his best season yet.

One area of emphasis has been improving his speed, something he believes will make him even more effective on both sides of the ball.

"One area I'm wanting to improve this year is speed," White said.

"I've been working on that with speed training and weights."

White already proved to be a versatile weapon during his junior season. Offensively, he rushed 29 times for 111 yards and a touchdown while adding 15 receptions for 256 yards and two scores. Defensively, he totaled 39 tackles, including 22 solo stops, along with 14 tackles for loss, five

sacks, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

After producing across multiple positions last season, White has set ambitious goals for his senior campaign.

Among his individual objectives are recording more than 50 tackles, 10 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, at least 200 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

With a league loaded with talented teams and closely matched competition, the Oswego standout is embracing the challenge rather than shying away from it. Wimp believes the Indians have the talent to contend if they continue building on the work they've put in throughout the offseason.

"I have attended all summer workouts and pushed for PR's all summer, along with extra training outside of weights," Wimp said.

The senior focused on two specific areas this offseason: strength and coordination.

As a lineman, Wimp understands that power alone isn't enough.

Improving his footwork and overall athleticism has become just as important as adding weight to the bar.

"I believe that being strong is a huge part of being a great player," Wimp said. "The second thing I've been training is my coordination.

Footwork is a huge part of my job as a lineman, so I believe it is essential to have good footwork."

Wimp enters the season coming

off an impressive junior campaign on defense. He totaled 27 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles while recording three sacks, forcing three fumbles and recovering three more. His performance earned him all-league honors as an offensive lineman and unanimous all-league recognition on the defensive line.

Despite the accolades, Wimp is motivated by bigger goals.

Individually, he hopes to establish himself as one of the area's top linemen and earn a spot in the Kansas Eight-Man All-Star Game.

"A huge goal I have for this year is to really make a name for myself," Wimp said. "I would like to be recognized and prove how much work I have put in throughout high school. I would also love to go to the 8-man all-star game this year."

His team goals, however, remain at the forefront.

"I would like our entire team to put it all on the line and have as much fun as possible this year," Wimp said.

FORT SCOTT FOOTBALL After a 3-6 season in 2025, the Fort Scott Tigers believe they are positioned to take a significant step forward this fall.

Second-year head coach Johnathan Stark returns a roster that features 14 letter winners, including four offensive and five defensive starters. While the Tigers are replacing several key graduates, they also welcome back an experienced junior class and a senior group Stark believes can provide the leadership needed to compete in one of Class 4A's toughest leagues.

"Our success this season will be defined by our commitment to our culture," Stark said.

"We must mesh our talent with great team chemistry, discipline, and accountability to one another. Our mindset is simple: lead, follow, or get out of the way."

The offense will revolve around senior quarterback Dredyn Marlow, who started the final four games of last season and provides added balance with his passing ability. Joining him in the backfield are junior Creed Clayton, a first-team All-Southeast Kansas League selection and honorable mention all-state running back, and senior fullback Paxton Allen, who earned second-team all-league honors in 2025. Clayton rushed for 739 yards and seven touchdowns last season, while Allen added 470 rushing yards.

Stark is also optimistic about a talented group of receivers led by Jax Armstrong, along with Gavin Aikin, Colt Lipe, Lukas Ogran and Cole Doherty. At tight end, sophomore Kyron Kegler gives the Tigers another versatile weapon, while Cooper Cannon, Bryson Clark and Isaak Bishop provide quality depth.

The offensive line features returning starter Terron Nutter, while Brodie Stoughton, Dayton Jackson, Cooper Murrow, Bryton Thurston and Rylan Moore will compete for the remaining starting spots.

The Tigers open the season Sept. 4 at home against Paola before navigating a demanding Southeast Kansas League schedule that includes Labette County, Chanute, Independence and Coffeyville. After finishing 2-2 in league play last season, Fort Scott hopes improved depth and internal competition will translate into more victories.

Despite having just seven seniors on the roster, Stark believes the Tigers are more talented than they were a year ago.

Stark knows the Tigers face a difficult road in the Southeast Kansas League but believes their identity can carry them through the challenges ahead.

"Overall, we enter the 2026 season with more talent than we had a year ago," Stark said.

"While we have a relatively small senior class, our biggest hurdle will be overcoming initial inexperience. Fortunately, our seniors provide excellent leadership, and the roster depth has created incredible competition for playing time in all three phases of the game."

"We expect to play hard every single snap and improve on a weekly basis," Stark said. "Our goal is to be a football team that is tough to beat because of our execution and an identity built on our commitment that we will not be outworked or outhit in any phase of the game."

After growing up with many of the same teammates, Colbert is looking forward to making the most of one final season together while helping the Bulldogs take the next step as a program.

Rather than resting on last season's success, Colbert spent the offseason sharpening every aspect of his game. He attended football camps, worked with multiple trainers and

playmaking ability both inside and outside the pocket.

"The area that I've been working on to improve is my speed," Colbert said. "I've had a lot of speed training with cones and ladders."

Colbert has set ambitious goals for his final high school season.

Individually, he hopes to become even more dangerous

"I am most excited for the team bonding," Colbert said.

"It's my last year with the people I've grown up with, so all the bus trips, practices and games will all be emotional."

Colbert enters the season with plenty of experience under center after putting together a productive junior campaign.

He completed 61.29% of his passes for 1,104 yards with 13 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. He also proved to be a dual-threat quarterback, rushing for 488 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 5.67 yards per carry. His longest run covered more than 70 yards.

One of his biggest priorities has been increasing his speed, an area he believes can elevate his

Fort Scott's Creed Clayton Fort Scott running back Creed Clayton said he is most excited about the chance to share the field with his teammates and experience Friday night football at Frary Field.

“I’m most excited to compete alongside my brothers, represent Fort Scott, and play Friday night football in front of the best hometown fans in the SEK,” Clayton said. “There isn’t a better atmosphere than Frary Field under the lights with our community behind us.”

Clayton spent the offseason focused on becoming a more explosive and complete player.

His preparation included consistent weight training, speed and agility work, football camps and improving his overall understanding of the game.

“I’ve been lifting consistently, working on speed and

One of Clayton’s biggest areas of focus entering the season has been improving his speed and explosiveness. He dedicated time to sprint work, plyometrics, agility drills and lower-body strength training while also expanding his skill set as a running back.

“I’ve worked on becoming a more complete player by improving my pass protection and receiving skills,” Clayton said.

Clayton enters the season looking to build on a strong junior campaign. Last season, he carried the ball 136 times for 739 yards and seven touchdowns, providing a key offensive presence for the Tigers.

This year, Clayton has set high expectations for himself while keeping his focus on helping Fort Scott achieve team success.

“I want to continue building my résumé as the best running back in Fort Scott High School history,” Clayton said. “My goal is to leave a lasting legacy by breaking school records, helping my team win, earning postseason honors, and setting the standard for future players through my work ethic, leadership, and performance every Friday night.”

Labette County's Nolan Nash The upcoming football season is the culmination of years of preparation for Nolan Nash of Labette County.

Since his freshman year, Nash has put in the extra work needed to become the player he is today, from early morning workouts to offseason camps and the countless hours spent improving after practice.

“I've been working for this season since my

freshman year,” Nash said. “All the 6 AM lifts, the camps, the extra work after practice — that's what got me to where I'm at, along with a lot of people believing in me along the way.”

Nash’s offseason has been a busy one. As a four-sport athlete, he competed in track through the end of the school year before immediately transitioning into football preparation. Once state track concluded, Nash and his teammates jumped into daily 6 a.m. lifting sessions.

“I've been to five camps this summer,” Nash said. “June was pretty much lifting and then basketball, and July has been football heavy.”

One of Nash’s biggest goals entering the offseason was adding strength and size.

Since the end of track season, he has added 15 pounds and believes the work has helped him take another step as a player.

“My biggest goal this summer was to gain weight, and I've put on 15 pounds since state track ended,” Nash said. “I truly feel like I've made the jump I needed to make.”

Smith's production last season reflected his ability to impact the game on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Offensively, he recorded 16 pancake blocks in nine games. Defensively, he totaled 70 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered three more, helping establish himself as one of the top linemen in the CNC. While individual accolades have followed, Smith said his biggest

goal this season extends beyond statistics.

“Some goals I’ve had for myself this year is to be not only a great player for myself but be a leader and a good example for my team and the people around me,” Smith said. “I think that is super important when building a good team atmosphere.”

That mindset also reflects the approach Columbus is taking as a team. Rather than focusing on results months down the road, the Titans are emphasizing steady daily improvement.

“I think our goal right now is to just get better every day,” Smith said.

Rather than relying solely on coaches, the players took ownership of their development throughout the summer.

Bancroft also spent considerable time refining one of the most important aspects of his game — his footwork.

Whether playing in the trenches or pursuing ball carriers on defense, he understands that proper technique often determines the outcome of each snap.

“Footwork,” Bancroft said when asked about his biggest area of improvement. “On the offensive line, footwork is what makes or breaks your performance.

My offensive line coach, Nolan Werner, constantly stresses that my footwork needs to be good. I work on it at practice every day and I watch film on where my footwork needs to be fixed.”

That attention to detail has already paid dividends.

Bancroft earned first-team All-Southeast Kansas League honors last season after recording 59 tackles, two sacks, eight tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Columbus' Braun Stone Braun Stone believes the foundation for a successful season has already been built.

After spending the offseason alongside a veteran group of teammates, the Columbus linebacker is eager to see the Titans' defense take center stage this fall. With several experienced players returning in the secondary, Stone expects the unit to be one of the team's strengths.

"I am most excited about what our defense will do this year," Stone said. "I'm hoping our secondary will look amazing because we have a lot of older guys that have been with us since freshman year and have been working their tails off all summer."

Stone has done his part to prepare 20

for his senior campaign. His offseason included three football camps, morning weightlifting sessions with teammates and daily position work focused on improving technique.

"We have weights in the morning with my teammates," Stone said.

"Then, after that, we work drills like passing routes, shedding blocks and footwork."

One of Stone's biggest priorities has been becoming more effective at fighting through traffic and disengaging from blockers in the run game. Columbus coaches designed drills to simulate game situations, helping linebackers improve their instincts and technique.

"I've been wanting to work on shedding blocks and getting through traffic in the box," Stone said. "We have

done drills with people holding bags in the box, making you flow through traffic. Another drill we have had is keeping our head on a swivel, making sure there are no opponents behind us open for a pass."

The work comes after an outstanding junior season in which Stone established himself as one of the area's top defensive players. He finished with 123 tackles, including 78 solo stops and 45 assists, earning All-CNC honors at linebacker and honorable mention all-state recognition.

Despite those accomplishments, Stone has set even higher expectations for himself this fall.

His individual goal is to finish among the top five tacklers in Kansas while continuing to serve as a mentor for younger teammates.

"One goal of mine is to be top five in tackles this season in Kansas and to be a leader and example

for the younger kids of what a good teammate looks like, to push yourself to be the best," Stone said.

Team success remains the top priority. Stone believes the Titans have the experience and chemistry to compete for conference and district championships while making a deep postseason run.

"As a team, I have a goal of being CNC champs, hosting playoff games and winning district champs," Stone said.

Independence's Maddox Purvis After a full offseason of preparation and improvement, Independence High School senior Maddox Purvis is ready to help the Bulldogs take the next step.

Purvis enters the season with confidence after dedicating countless hours to improving his skills as a punter while also continuing to develop as a wide receiver and strong safety. With team success at the forefront of his mind, Purvis believes the Bulldogs have put in the work needed to compete at a high level.

As a punter, he has worked on improving his hang time, accuracy and technique while building more strength in his leg to help give Independence an advantage in the field position battle.

“This offseason, I’ve focused on improving my consistency, hang time and overall accuracy,” Purvis said. “I’ve spent a lot of time practicing my technique and working on my leg strength so I can help give our team better field position. I feel more confident than ever, and I’m excited to show how much I’ve improved this season.”

“I’m really excited about this upcoming football season because our team has worked hard all offseason to improve,” Purvis said. “We’ve spent a lot of time building chemistry, getting stronger and learning from last year’s mistakes. I can’t wait to compete with my teammates, Maddox Purvis play in front of our

both sides of the ball, working at wide receiver and strong safety in addition to his punting duties.

“I’ve worked a lot on my punting this offseason, but I’ve also been putting in extra work at wide receiver and strong safety,” Purvis said. “I just want to keep improving in every part of the game and be someone the coaches can count on wherever they need me.”

Purvis showed his versatility during his previous season. He averaged more than 33 yards per punt, not including the 13 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and also made an impact defensively

with two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

With another season ahead, Purvis has set individual goals of earning All-SEK honors as both a punter and potentially as a kicker.

However, his biggest focus remains helping Independence achieve team success.

“Some goals I want to achieve this upcoming season is I want to make the All-SEK teams for my punting and possibly kicking this year,” Purvis said. “Some team goals we have is we want to win the SEK and host a playoff game at the end of the season.”

Purvis’ contributions are not limited to special teams.

He has also spent time preparing for opportunities on

Parsons' Jakarre Green After missing time because of injuries last season, Parsons senior defensive back Jakarre Green is eager for another opportunity to prove himself on the football field.

Green said the thing he is looking forward to most about the upcoming season is simply getting back to playing the game he loves and showing what he can do when healthy.

“The thing I am most excited about this upcoming football season is just being back to playing football,” Green said. “Last year I missed some games due to injuries, and I’m ready to show what I am capable of doing.”

Green has spent the offseason preparing for a strong return

alongside his teammates. The Parsons football team has put in consistent work in the weight room and on the field, focusing on speed, strength and agility to get ready for the challenges ahead.

“In the offseason, my teammates and I have been training 3-4 times a week to prepare for this upcoming season,” Green said.

“We have been doing speed, strength, and agility workouts to better help us with the season.”

One of Green’s biggest areas of focus heading into the season is improving his preparation.

He believes putting in extra time away from practice will help him become a better player when Friday nights arrive.

Despite playing in only seven games last season, Green made an impact for Parsons.

He recorded 29 total tackles, including 19 solo tackles, while also adding an interception and 39 interception return yards.

This season, Green has set ambitious individual goals as he looks to build on that

performance. He is aiming for 50 total tackles and five interceptions while continuing to become a more complete player.

For Green, success this season is not just about individual numbers. He wants the Vikings to play with consistency, effort and a team-first mindset as they chase a postseason appearance.

“A couple goals I have set for the team is playing to our best ability, giving 100% effort at all times, and making the playoffs,” Green said.

Pittsburg’s Laney Trisler For Pittsburg High School shortstop Laney Trisler, softball is as much about faith and relationships as it is about range and reaction time. A junior on the Dragons’ varsity squad, Trisler anchors the infield while balancing a busy life in the classroom, on campus and in the community.

“Jesus. He has been my rock in a hard place, and he pushes me to be a better person everyday spreading joy, love, patience, and kindness,” Trisler said. “He is who gives me strength and has given me all my opportunities.”

That perspective shows up in her routines, including a small but meaningful ritual before every at-bat.

“I first draw a cross in the dirt, while doing so I’ll see if my coach gave me a sign,” she said. “Then, I step into the box, do a circle and tap the plate. While I’m at the plate I think of my approach, what has everyone said about her pitches? Inside? Outside?

Spin? Did she walk a bunch or what is her rhythm like, this is what prepared me to know what to expect. I will look for ‘my pitch’.”

On defense, Trisler patrols shortstop, a position she says demands constant readiness.

hardest thing about the position is having such a large range to cover and having to be ready to move everywhere,” she said.

Around the diamond, she leans on traditions and teammates.

Asked for the best unwritten rule in softball, she doesn’t hesitate: “Never step on the chalk foul lines when leaving or entering the diamond.”

The team’s chemistry is a big part of why she loves the game.

“It creates a close bond and you have a team to back you up when you may not be having the best day or to hype you up when you have a great day,” Trisler said.

“I love how we can all laugh and have a good time together yet we still come to work.”

She credits former teammate Brette Pasteur as “the most vocal and always made sure everyone knew what was going

on,” and says AnnaLynn Hudson “most definitely keeps everyone laughing by never knowing what she’s going to say or do next.”

Breck Slaughter, she added, “is very humble and very good at the same time.”

Away from the field, Trisler’s favorite subject is education because she hopes to become an elementary school teacher, and she names Mrs. Sanford, her ninth grade Earth and space science teacher, as a favorite.

She is involved in FCA, GBL, Special Olympics, volleyball, cheerleading and student council, and even finds time to volunteer at the public library.

Athletics, she said, have given her a lesson she plans to carry forward: “You can never give up, and you will never be the best so you have to continue working hard and trying to get better every single day. Consistency is key.”

Andre Williams

For Andre Williams, choosing the right college wasn’t just about finding a place to play football. It was about finding an environment that would help him grow on and off the field.

That search led Williams to Hutchinson Community College, where he found a program built on accountability, high expectations and a commitment to developing student-athletes into wellrounded individuals.

“I chose Hutchinson CC because I saw a program where I could develop not only as a studentathlete, but also as a young man,” Williams said. “I was also really drawn to the high standards they hold for their players.”

Those standards have helped create a culture that Williams says extends far beyond football. As a Blue Dragon, he has found himself surrounded by teammates and coaches who challenge one another every day while providing support along the way.

Some of his favorite aspects of being a student-athlete at Hutchinson are the close-knit community and the relationships built throughout the program.

“Some of my favorite things about Hutch are the supportive community and the high level of accountability the coaches maintain with the players,” Williams said.

Williams describes the atmosphere within the football program as one built on trust, shared goals and mutual respect.

“To me, the culture is like a brotherhood,” he said. “Everyone is focused on achieving their goals, and we constantly push each other, both teammates and coaches alike.”

That combination of accountability and camaraderie has helped reinforce why Hutchinson has become one of the premier junior college football programs in the country. Players are expected to give their best every day while knowing they have teammates and coaches invested in their success.

For prospective student-athletes considering Hutchinson Community College, Williams understands there can be uncertainty about taking the next step. His advice is simple.

“If a student-athlete is interested in Hutch but has some hesitation, I would recommend that they trust their gut feeling,” Williams said.

WEBB CITY FOOTBALL WEBB CITY CARDINALS Webb City High School enters the 2026 season under head coach Ryan McFarland determined to take the next step after a solid 7-4 campaign that included a 3-2 mark and third-place finish in the Central Ozark Conference West.

The Cardinals averaged 36.6 points per game while allowing 26.5, with regular-season losses only to Nixa, Carthage and Republic, three of the state’s stronger programs. McFarland remains proud of that group’s effort but stresses the need to consistently beat those same contenders.

“We've got a great senior class

and they've worked really hard,” McFarland said ahead of the 2026 season. “They're developing into really good leaders and we're just excited to get our senior class out there and let them lead us and see where we can go.”

The offense will again feature a powerful ground attack built around an experienced offensive line. Three-year starters Louden Bolinger (All-State, All-Area, first-team All-District) and Kayle Chrismon (second-team COC, All-District) anchor the unit alongside returning contributors Caleb Meinershagen and Grayson Gannaway. Webb City’s Louden Bolinger Louden Bolinger has built his reputation at Webb City High School the same way he plays offensive tackle, with consistency, discipline and a focus on doing the work others might overlook.

most vivid memories came in a rivalry win. “Beating Joplin at Junge Field for the first time in years,” he said, recalling a moment that stood out not just for the result, but for what it represented.

The senior credits much of that mindset to his father, who he says has been his biggest inspiration. “He is always working no matter the current situation faced,” Bolinger said.

“That’s something I try to carry with me every day.”

He has also taken lessons from teammates, particularly former varsity center Sean Hunt.

“He played through injuries because he knew he was an important part of his team,” Bolinger said.

“That stuck with me.”

On the field, Bolinger anchors the offensive line, where his role demands both physical strength and quick decisionmaking. He describes the most difficult part of playing tackle as “blocking linebackers in space,” a challenge that requires agility as much as power. Still, it’s a responsibility he embraces as part of the team’s larger mission.

Off the field,

Bolinger is just as committed to growth. A fan of math and a supporter of teacher Bobby Stafford, he values the discipline academics bring to his daily routine. When he’s not in class or at practice, he enjoys golfing and spending time in the community.

Bolinger also gives back by helping with youth football and track activities, working with younger athletes who hope to follow a similar path. “I like being around the upcoming athletes,” he said.

“He was never the best athlete or had the best arm, but he was very competitive and had a lot of drive. That ended up taking him way farther than his talent ever would.”

“We all have the same goal and we play for each other no matter what,” Claborn said.

He also draws inspiration from former teammates, including Mason Williams and Gus Karnes, who left a lasting impression through their work ethic and leadership.

Off the field, Claborn maintains an active lifestyle. He enjoys water skiing, fishing and playing pickleball when he’s not training.

On game days, however, his routine is simple.

“I usually try to take a nap either on the locker room floor or on the bus,” he said. “It clears my head and helps me focus.”

One of his favorite football memories dates back to his youth, when he returned a fumble 75 yards for a touchdown in fourth grade. More recently, he recalls a viral moment when teammate Trey Turner made a highlight-reel catch that landed on ESPN. Claborn also values giving back, regularly helping with youth camps and coaching younger players.

“The next generation is what keeps the tradition alive,” he said.

His philosophy is straightforward: “You deserve nothing, you have to earn everything.”

Pogue is also a standout defensive player, an uncommon and valuable combination for a setter. Her competitiveness and ability to handle pressure were important last season and will be key again.

Right-side hitter and blocker Jocelyn Maxwell adds leadership through example. A 4.0-plus student, she is willing to take responsibility, encourages teammates and brings a genuine, thoughtful presence to the group. “My family and friends inspire me because they always push me to be my best,” Lofland said. “But I would specifically say my dad. He encourages me, challenges me, and believes in me. I admire how hard he works and how much he cares not only for our family but for everyone around him.”

We have seven seniors and we have played together since Junior High!” she said. She added that she “enjoy[s] all the connections you make over the seasons,” and the thrill of competition: “There is nothing better than playing against another school with all of your friends.”

She praised setters Avery Pogue and Marissa Elbert, calling them “two great setters” who “have

Our kids believe that we’ve got the formula and know how to do it.

As long as we work and put in the time, we’re able to reload and have those new kids step up and make plays for us.”

Neosho's Blayne Patterson Blayne Patterson enters his senior year at Neosho High School with a clear standard for himself: never be the same player he was yesterday. A quarterback for the Wildcats and a sprinter and relay competitor in track, Patterson brings that mindset

into every workout, practice and classroom assignment.

For Patterson, improvement is bigger than individual statistics or recognition. He wants to become a dependable teammate and a leader who raises the level

of everyone around him. Each day offers another opportunity to learn, improve and lead by example, whether he is studying film after practice, training for speed or preparing for the different defensive looks he will see on Friday nights.

His support system has helped shape that approach. Quarterback coach Colby Cornett has challenged Patterson to stay disciplined and chase his goal of playing Division I football.

Patterson also credits his father, Levi, for investing countless hours in his development, from playing catch in the yard to studying film and holding him accountable. Neosho head coach Brandon Taute has been another influential figure, giving Patterson the chance to play varsity football as a freshman and continuing to push him through both successes and mistakes.

Patterson also draws inspiration from Jalen Hurts, whose resilience and team-first mentality have made a lasting impression. He admires the way Hurts handled adversity at Alabama and celebrated his teammates’ success, seeing that example as a reminder

Patterson made the difficult decision to step away from baseball, a sport he had played since childhood, in order to run track and develop the speed and strength that could benefit his football future. One of the highlights of Patterson’s career came during his freshman and sophomore seasons, when he had the opportunity to play varsity football alongside his brother, Bostyn. Those shared moments reinforced the value of family, teamwork and making the most of every opportunity.

Away from athletics, Patterson is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and relies on organization, discipline and accountability to balance football, track and academics. McGehee’s drive began at home. His dad and stepdad have consistently pushed him to give his best effort, shaping the work ethic he carries into every practice, workout and competition. That mindset has also been reinforced

by Neosho teacher Mr. Littlefield, who has helped McGehee recognize the value of dedication while developing the confidence to become a stronger competitor.

Success has not arrived by accident.

McGehee credits the long hours spent training and practicing during the offseason for preparing him to compete at a high level.

His work in the weight room reflects that commitment, with a 500-pound squat and 300-pound bench press helping him develop the strength necessary to make an impact on Friday nights. He also runs a 4.9-second 40-yard dash, pairing power with the ability to move quickly in space.

One of the defining moments of McGehee’s athletic career came when he received his first college football offer from Central Methodist University. The opportunity confirmed what his offseason work had been building toward: the chance to continue playing football at the next level.

Competition is a major part of what makes football meaningful for McGehee. Beating Webb City carries special significance because of the schools’ rivalry and because he has friends on the opposing roster. Within Neosho’s own practices, he enjoys matching up against teammate Michael Schellhorn, a tough competitor who challenges him daily. Their battles sharpen Colby McGehee both players and

create the kind of environment that raises the standard for the entire team.

McGehee is also a standout in track and field. He is a three-year letterman and an AAU Junior Olympian in shot put, discus and javelin, placing among the top 35 competitors in all three events.

Away from athletics, he has served as a Future Farmers of America officer for three years and won first place individually in Missouri’s state poultry judging competition.

EVERTON BASEBALL The Everton Tigers are beginning a new chapter this fall as head coach Josh Wiseman and his young roster restart the school’s baseball program. The opportunity carries plenty of excitement for a group that will be learning together from the opening practices through the final out. Establishing a program is about more than putting a lineup on the field. It is about creating routines, building confidence and setting a standard that can guide the Tigers for seasons to come.

JOPLIN FOOTBALL JOPLIN EAGLES The Joplin Eagles enter the 2026 season under longtime head coach Curtis Jasper looking to build off of a 5-6 campaign that ended with a 2-3 mark and fourthplace finish in the COC West.

Last year’s team averaged 29 points per game while allowing 25, but graduation claimed 18 starters and 30 lettermen. Jasper, in his 12th year at Joplin (85-38) and 27th overall (161-62), returns just four starters and 10 lettermen yet remains optimistic about a hungry group ready to step up.

“I think they’re really excited,” Jasper said. “We graduated 30 seniors and only have two returners coming back on each side of the ball. The guys that we have coming up—a lot of them are really excited to get their opportunity and prove what they can do. … I think we can be a very scrappy team … but we have a lot of things we have to go out and prove.”

On offense, Joplin will run a prostyle spread. Senior quarterback Trenton McCadney (6-2, 178), a first-team all-conference, firstteam all-area and third-team all-state selection at wideout, was the Eagles’ most explosive playmaker and anchors the attack. Junior center Titus Cole (6-1, 270), an honorable-mention all-area pick, junior running back Elijah Hurrell (5-10, 205) and senior wide receiver/defensive back Jacob Porter (5-11, 150) all

Joplin’s Trenton McCadney Joplin senior Trenton McCadney is entering his final high school season with the football in his hands more than ever before, and he is prepared for the responsibility.

After building a decorated career as a wide receiver that included all-state and all-conference recognition, McCadney is making the full transition to quarterback for the Eagles. The move puts him at the center of the offense in a senior year he approaches with excitement.

“I’m very excited for the upcoming season,” McCadney said. “It’s my senior year. I get to go out with all my friends and all the people that look up to me this year, all the underclassmen that are willing to make an impact, so it’s going to be fun.”

The switch was not a complete surprise. McCadney began working at quarterback last season, where he amassed more than 1,300 yards and added 11 touchdowns, while also seeing

limited action earlier in his career. Still, being the signalcaller brings a new level of responsibility.

“It means they rely on me,” he said. “It means they trust me for this big change from going wide receiver to quarterback, and it means I’m going to have the ball in my hands a lot more, so I’m ready for it.”

The physical traits that made him a standout receiver should also translate. McCadney expects his experience facing talented defensive backs, getting off the line and making defenders miss to help him as a dual-threat

The transition has required adjustment, particularly in building chemistry with the wide receivers.

“This year, it’s definitely helping me take charge of the team and me leading the team and me being a good example,” he said.

“One thing I noticed, you’re going to need a lot more chemistry than I thought,” McCadney said. “So, we definitely come out here and put in a lot of work.”

McCadney hopes the Eagles can improve on last season’s 5-6 record and make a deeper run. He is especially excited to see what Joplin’s underclassmen can bring as they compete for their opportunities.

His experience at wide receiver has helped create a foundation, especially when it comes to reading defenses. McCadney was already accustomed to scanning the field, identifying keys and recognizing where openings might develop. Now, he is applying that feeling from a new

Joplin’s Alexander Flinn As Joplin High School prepares for the upcoming football season, one voice stands out on the defensive side of the ball. Senior defensive lineman Alexander Flinn returns as the lone defensive starter from a year ago, stepping into a natural leadership role for a unit that will feature plenty of new faces.

Flinn approaches the responsibility with a straightforward mindset. “I just show up every day and then mostly try to lead by example. I just want to show people what to do and help them if they need help with anything,” he said.

“Everybody’s been stepping up really good, though, I think.”

That experience gap is real.

Flinn knows the jump from junior varsity to varsity under the lights on Friday better than most of his teammates. Facing bigger offensive linemen and adjusting to a faster pace are lessons he carries forward.

“Just playing against all the big offensive linemen for the D-line because it’s a big step up from JV,” he explained. “It’s just like a different speed from JV, going up to varsity.”

With the Eagles opening against strong competition such as Kickapoo and Nixa, Flinn’s message to the newcomers is simple and reassuring. The speed will feel quicker, he tells them, but the summer work against their own teammates and other squads has prepared them. “Just keep bringing it how they have been.”When the inevitable shellshock moment arrives in Week 1, Flinn’s job is clear. “I want to just try to bring everybody together,” he said. “Tell them to just keep going and not let it get to them, even though it’s hard sometimes, just to push through.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Flinn wants the defense to improve steadily. “I just want to be the best team we can and hopefully we’ll keep getting better and better,” he said. “Even if we’re not great at the start, keep building on it and then just keep getting better week by week.” He has full belief in the players around him after watching their work this summer.

“I’m just trying to get everybody to be the best they can for the last year and just have the most fun they can.”

What he has seen so far encourages him. The team has experienced both strong moments and setbacks during the summer and early practices, yet the response has been positive. After a rough Monday and Tuesday last week, the Eagles bounced back with strong sessions the rest of the week.

“I’ve seen them get back up from those (rough practices) and keep working towards being great,” Flinn said.

That resilience fuels his outlook.

“Anything we put our minds to, really,” he said of the team’s potential. “I have faith in everybody.”

With the start of the season just around the corner, Flinn is ready.

“I’m really excited. I can’t wait for it to start. It’s going to be a great season.”

For a defense still finding its identity, Flinn’s steady presence and quiet leadership offer a foundation. As the lone returning starter, he is not just filling a spot, he is continuing the tradition of raising the standard.

The senior season itself carries extra weight. Flinn is focused on helping his teammates maximize their potential and enjoy the ride.

One of Ralston’s favorite FFA memories came during her sophomore year, when she attended the State Convention for the first time with her parliamentary procedure team. The experience gave her a broader view of the organization and the thousands of students statewide who share a passion for agriculture, service and leadership. After working hard alongside her Parli teammates to reach the event, Ralston felt proud to be part of something much larger than herself.

Whether she is serving in FFA or playing golf, Ralston understands that success requires dedication, consistency and patience. Countless hours of practice, mental focus and a willingness to learn from mistakes have shaped her into a disciplined and resilient student-athlete.

Experience returns on the line, where junior all-state tackle Landen Hughes and senior center Jeff Todd (firstteam all-district) anchor the unit. Senior tight end/defensive end Aiden Crane (first-team all-district) and others will help control the line of scrimmage while new skill players develop.

Junior quarterback Klay Davidson (6-1, 210) brings size and a dualthreat ability. Senior Silas Ball moves back to running back after late-season work at H-back, and versatile senior Brant Laughlin, a two-time state wrestling champion committed to SIU Edwardsville, adds playmaking flexibility at H-back and elsewhere.

SENECA NDIANS The Seneca Indians enter 2026 as defending Class 3 state champions after a dominant 13-1 campaign that included a Big 8 title, district crown and a 33-26 victory over Lift for Life in the state final. Under fourthyear head coach Cody Hilburn (58-10 at Seneca), the program has climbed steadily, district title, quarterfinal, semifinal and now a championship, and the focus shifts to maintaining that standard.

Now that the Indians have reached the top of the mountain, how do they stay there?

“Here's what I'll tell you about our kids coming back,” Hilburn said. “They have done everything necessary to give themselves a chance. They show up. Our summer attendance was the best it's ever been. And our kids want to show up and work. And I don't know how that will look Week 1, Week 2, but if we continue to do that, hopefully we're playing our best football when it matters.”

Seneca graduated 12 players, including several all-state talents, and returns six starters and 12 lettermen from a senior class that has never missed a state championship game. Those extra postseason weeks have built deep experience even among former role players now stepping into larger spots.

A roster of 70, the largest in Hilburn’s tenure, provides uncommon depth for Class 3, allowing rotation along both lines.

Seneca knows every Friday demands readiness in one of the state’s strongest small-school conferences. With proven culture, returning experience and a commitment to the process, the Indians are positioned to contend once again.

Seneca’s Brant Laughlin Seneca High School senior Brant Laughlin is the rare athlete who has already stood atop the podium in two sports. A two-time Missouri state wrestling champion and a key contributor in the secondary on the Indians’ 2025 Class 3 football state championship team—the program’s first title since 1995. Laughlin is preparing for his senior football season while committed to Division I SIUEdwardsville wrestling.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of excitement,” Laughlin said of the upcoming campaign. “Coming off a state title, you know, our goal is obviously to win another one. So, it pumps us up. But we know we have a target on our back. But we just got to hunt.”

That “hunt” mindset fits. It is also the motto of the SIUE program he will join after high school. Laughlin took a visit, felt immediately at home with the coaching staff, and knew it was the place that could help him chase bigger goals, including a national championship.

SIUE wrestling is a rising midmajor Division I program with a strong foundation and clear recent momentum. Historically a threetime NCAA Division II national champion (1984–86), the Cougars have made major strides in the 2025-26 season, posting an 11-2 dual record (their best in decades), capturing the first-ever MAC West Division title, and achieving a program-best third-place finish at the MAC Championships with a school-record eight placewinners.

For Laughlin, last year’s football title run remains special, even if he refuses to relish it. It was, afterall, his first year as a starter.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “But I can’t live in the past… just move on, and now I’m ready for this year.”

What sticks with him is the brotherhood. “We were always hanging out, doing stuff together.

We were always lifting each other up. We faced a lot of adversity last year, and we did such a good job just bouncing back when times were tough.”

“When he got here, I knew it was going to change,” Laughlin said.

“We’ve won a district title every year, and we’ve made a run every year. He changed it so fast. We’re selling out the crowd every night.

We’ve got a new field. It’s crazy how quickly it changed.”

The winning culture has spread.

Seneca’s wrestling team finished second at state last season with three individual champions and four finalists. Laughlin credits multi-sport athletes for the school’s broad success.

The individual nature differs from football’s pure team focus, yet both demand technical precision, toughness, and brotherhood. The sports complement each other: “It gives me the brotherhood, of course, integrity, knowing I have to do the right thing when no one’s looking, not staying out late, not going to parties, stuff like that.”

Winning titles in both sports in the same year is uncommon.

Laughlin stays grounded. “It means a lot… being in the same year, too… But it’s whatever at the same time.” The success only fuels him. “I’m always hungry, and I never won’t be hungry. I feel like that’s my best trait… always working, always doing something, probably too much at times. But I like to be hungry.”

His goals for the senior year are clear: another football state title, individual and team wrestling titles, and leaving a mark as a good person and leader.

And to the younger athletes debating specialization, his advice is simple: “Do it. Be a multi-sport athlete. It’s fun. You get more athleticism… You’re giving your body time to recover… just do it.”

JASPER FOOTBALL The Jasper Eagles enter the 2026 football season looking to turn a 4-6 campaign into a foundation for progress. Head coach Justin Sentlinger and assistants Jonathan Nash and Travis Storm have a roster that combines speed, size and depth, giving the Eagles confidence as they prepare for a demanding schedule.

Jasper returns three starters on each side of the ball, but the program’s outlook is strengthened by a number of young contributors who are ready for expanded roles. The Eagles will emphasize the details that create consistency—assignment discipline, physicality, ball security and effort from snap to whistle.

Just as important, the team is working to develop a strong sense of pride that can carry from week to week and help the group grow throughout the season.

Offensively, Jasper will operate primarily from the I formation and look to play fast while staying true to a sound option-based attack. Sophomore quarterback Colt Storm will guide the offense, bringing experience and versatility to the backfield. Storm is also expected to make an impact defensively, giving the Eagles a two-way athlete capable of contributing in several areas.

Senior Keilen Greene is a key returning presence at running back and linebacker. His combination of size, athleticism and experience should provide stability for Jasper on both sides

of the football. Freshman running back Easton Pettibon joins the offensive backfield and could add a physical element at 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds.

The offensive line will be a major piece of the Eagles’ identity.

Sophomore Baylor Rush brings strength to the front, while senior Gaige Mitchell gives Jasper an imposing option at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds. Mitchell’s ability to line up on the offensive line or at tight end provides flexibility for an offense built around the run game, option principles and creating favorable matchups.

With returning leadership, developing youth and solid depth across the roster, Jasper has the ingredients to take a step forward.

Greene and junior Haiden Warner will help lead the linebacker group, while junior Wyatt Mahurin adds range in the secondary. Senior Craig Zuber returns to the field after missing last season and gives Jasper another experienced defensive back. Storm can also contribute at linebacker or defensive back, adding depth to a unit that will look to pursue the football, play aggressively and create momentum-changing plays.

CARTHAGE TIGERS Carthage High School enters 2026 with high expectations and lingering motivation after a memorable 2025 campaign.

Under longtime head coach Jon Guidie (22nd year at the school, 191-57 record there), the Tigers went 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the COC West to claim the conference title. They won the district championship and advanced to the Class 5 state final, falling 28-34 in overtime to Platte County after playoff wins over Neosho (42-7), Republic (31-14), Capital City (36-17), and Cardinal Ritter (20-8). The program now owns one state title (2019) and seven conference championships.

Eleven starters and 15 lettermen return from that deep run, though 11 starters and 18 lettermen graduated, including several heading to college programs. Offense should again feature a balanced attack that averaged 37.6 points, 281 rushing yards, and 103 passing yards per game last season.

In the backfield, All-State running back Landon West returns after a 2,000-yard junior season marked by speed and power, alongside versatile H-back/linebacker Jett Dalton.

Senior outside hitter Elsie Willis is a central part of the Lady Tigers’ attack. Though she stands 5-foot6, Willis can jump out of the gym and delivers an impressive

attack. She is level-headed under pressure, consistent in both the front and back rows, and a strong leader. Carthage relies on her in significant moments, and she handles that responsibility with grace and grit.

London Shepherd supplies versatility and a powerful frontrow presence. She spent her first two varsity seasons as a middle hitter and is set to receive most of her swings at outside hitter during her final two years, while still being able to play middle or right side. Her strong arm and big block make her a dependable option in pressure situations.

CARTHAGE TENNIS The Carthage Lady Tigers enter the 2026 girls tennis season excited about the amount of varsity experience returning to the program. Head coach Madelynn Capps-Whitley has a group that includes many returning varsity players and athletes with previous varsity match experience. The team’s underclassmen have also spent the offseason playing and improving their skills, creating an encouraging combination of experience, development and enthusiasm for the sport.

MONETT FOOTBALL MONETT CUBS The Monett Cubs enter the 2026 football season with continuity, experience and a strong belief that their steady growth can translate into a deeper run. After finishing 5-6 in 2025, head coach Ben Mauk begins his second season at Monett with a veteran group that has now spent three years developing within the program’s offensive and defensive systems.

That familiarity gives the Cubs a foundation on both sides of the ball. Mauk believes the team has improved each season while learning the schemes, and this year’s senior class will be asked to set the standard in the locker room, through summer preparation and on Friday nights.

Monett returns several proven contributors, especially at the skill positions and along the front lines.

Senior quarterback Dylan Washick headlines the offense.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound signal caller enters his third year as a starter after putting together one of the most productive careers in program history. Washick has passed for 4,433 yards and 44 touchdowns, earning all-conference, all-district and all-area recognition. He has led the state in passing in each of the past two seasons and owns Monett’s career and singleseason records for passing yards and touchdown passes. With his experience, arm strength

and command of the offense, Washick gives the Cubs a proven leader under center.

Nestleroad and Brayden Seitz, who combined for more than 2,100 receiving yards.

Nestleroad posted 1,342 yards, while Seitz added 823 yards, giving Monett two

established targets capable of stretching defenses and creating explosive plays. Sophomore Kyler Rivera is another name to watch.

After an impressive offseason, Rivera is positioned to become one of Missouri’s top young receivers and add even more depth to the passing attack.

The offensive line will lean on the experience of seniors Jose Garcia and Oscar Hinojosa, along with junior Luis Serrano. Their ability to protect Washick and establish consistency in the running game will be central to the Cubs’ success.

Defensively, Monett returns a senior-led unit featuring linebacker Aiden Rivera, who recorded 122 tackles a season ago. Fellow seniors Henry Reed, Kelton Carr, Chris Calhoun, Kasen Carr and Chris Spears bring experience at every level, from the defensive front to the secondary.

PIERCE CITY FOOTBALL players with meaningful two-way experience. Senior tight end and linebacker Cruz Ibarra has started both ways for the past two seasons.

A talented, hard-working player, Ibarra will be counted on as a leader. Senior Crae Salsman is an athletic lineman who started both ways last season, while senior Caiden Haworth returns after earning his first starting role and putting in extensive work during the offseason. Both will be important up front on offense and defense.

Speed and toughness also stand out among the Eagles’ veterans.

Senior Landen Stanphill is the team’s fastest player and is looking for a breakout year after a seasonending injury cut short his previous campaign. He is slated to help at wide receiver and defensive back. At 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, senior Luke Eaton is a two-way tight end and linebacker described as one of the team’s toughest players.

LOCKWOOD FOOTBALL
