“WALK THROUGH MEDIEVAL STREETS AND WANDER ALONG CANALS AND THROUGH COURTYARDS!”
THE LONGEST CHURCH IN THE NETHERLANDS When you walk past the Sint-Janskerk, you will notice the church is pretty long: with its 123 metres, it is the longest church in the Netherlands. Many medieval towns did their best to build the tallest church in the country, but considering Gouda’s soft soil length was a better option here. If you stand in the centre of the church, you can experience the building’s enormous proportions. Majestic pillars have supported this church for centuries.

GOUDA GLASS IS WORLD-RENOWNED When you stand outside you see dark, almost black windows. It is precisely these church windows that form the greatest treasure of the Sint-Janskerk. Their full glory is revealed the moment you enter the church. The Gouda Glass, as the 72 stained glass windows are called, was mostly made in the 16th century. They depict Biblical and historical events in comic strip form. 2

1 SINT-JANSKERK & GOUDA GLASS The first mention of the Sint-Janskerk can be found in documents from the year 1280, but the current church was built after the great fire of 1552. It was named after John the Baptist, the patron saint of Gouda. With its 123 metres, it is the longest church in the Netherlands. The church is also world-renowned for its Gouda glass. These stained glass windows, particularly those from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, display scenes from the Bible and from Dutch history. Audio tour (NL/EN/DE/FR/IT/ES) If you would like to know the story behind the famous Gouda Glass, you can take an audio tour with expert and interesting information. An audio tour is included in the entrance fee to the Sint-Janskerk. Dutch Museum Churches The Sint-Janskerk is part of the Dutch Museum Churches, the most beautiful churches in the Netherlands that have joined forces to form the largest museum in the Netherlands. For more information, go to www.grootstemuseum.nl
QUEENS AND BEARS As it was quite expensive to make stained glass windows, wealthy clergymen and nobles were invited to sponsor a window. In return, images of them were prominently depicted in the window. You can see the images of bishops, Golden Fleece Knights and even kings such as Philip II of Spain and Mary Tudor of England. Because many people could not read, a type of pictography was employed that everyone at the time understood. Hence, the dog, symbol of faithfulness, is depicted in as many as twenty windows. At the foot of the corrupt King Herod lies a bear symbol of iniquity and sin. Visitors who want to see the Sint-Janskerk on a Sunday can only do so by attending a church service at 10.00 or 17.00 hrs. 4 THE TOWN HALL During the summer of 1438, a devastating fire reduced the then town of Gouda virtually to ashes. The town hall suffered heavy damage. The town council decided that the new town hall should be freestanding. It chose a new location on the market field, which was little more than a sodden peat bog at the time. On the right facing wall you can see the carillon with mechanical puppets which were added in 1961. The leading figure in the carillon is Floris V, who granted Gouda its town charter in 1272. Every two minutes of each half hour, the carillon will provide a lovely spectacle, as the puppets begin to move.
GOUDSE WAAG The Goudse Waag (Weighing House) is a listed building with a rich and colourful history. For centuries it has been a central point in Gouda where you will receive a warm welcome. In the Cheese and Crafts Museum you can find out all about Gouda crafts such as cheese, clay pipes, Gouda candles and ceramics. These days there is still plenty to experience. Visit the Goudse Waag to discover the secrets concealed within the relief. Why is there, for example, an exotic looking man hidden behind a merchant? And what about the story behind this sentence: ‘Niet te Hooch. Niet te Laech. Van Passe.’ (“Not too high, not too low, just right”)? Would you like to see how Gouda cheese is made? This is also possible in the Goudse Waag. And why not taste a piece of cheese or buy a nice souvenir of your visit to Gouda? You can also simply book your ticket online.

GOUDA CLAY PIPES A Gouda pipe is a clay tobacco pipe smoked by many men in the 18th century. In 1606, English mercenaries arrived in the Netherlands as reinforcements for Gouda. They taught the people of Gouda how to make the pipes. Later, in 1660, the Guild of Gouda Pipe Makers was founded. With the arrival of wooden pipes, the cigar and the popularity of cigarettes, the craft was almost lost.

LF GOUDA “CHILL OUT ON ONE OF THE MANY WELCOMING TERRACES!”
In 1910 the Goudsche Lichtfabriek was used as a light factory. Not to make light bulbs, but to generate electricity for Gouda and the surrounding area. Today LF-Gouda is a nice restaurant. They cook like our grandparents used to do, honestly and with love! Why? Because it tastes good and is satisfying. Because it is genuine. But also because you can taste that people were connected with each other and with nature. This is how the menu has been designed: no packets or bags, but fresh products, preferably from the region. In the Lichtfabriek you design your menu by going to The Butchers, The Fishmongers, The Greengrocers or The Poulterers. Of course, for dessert you pay a visit to The Patisserie! MONUMENTAL SHIPS Gouda played a major role in shipping as early as the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, due to its central location, the town offered passage to ships en route to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda’s role in international shipping went into decline. Today, you can still find historic clippers, barges, tjalken (Dutch sailing vessels with a characteristic spritsail), tugboats and straight-stem barges lying majestically alongside each other in the Museum Harbour. These are all still lived in. In the former captain’s waiting room, now the Museum Harbour pub IJsselhuis Gouda, owner Herman will pour you a refreshing drink while you take in the view of the historic fleet. If you are the proud owner of a historic ship, you can join the other floating gems in the Museum Harbour. For conditions and rates, please contact the harbour master of the Museum Harbour. Gouda is a typical Dutch town that has for centuries been inextricably associated with the water of the Hollandsche IJssel and the Gouwe. The town centre has a special network of intimate, almost mysterious watercourses. A visit to Gouda’s town centre with its restored sluices and bridges - not to mention its works of art in the water - will certainly be worth your while.

RESTAURANT LIZZ AND COCO BAR Start with a drink at the strikingly beautiful bar COCO. The kitchen bustles, the fire blazes and the passion of the staff is infectious. A restaurant of this level, with this set up, has a story. The story of the history, of a new wine region, is told with its dishes and through the menu. There is unity here. Before you know it your table is filled with refined dishes made from local specialities. Exciting and promising. It makes you curious what is still to come.
BEST WESTERN PLUS CITY HOTEL GOUDA This lovely 4-star hotel with 101 rooms, restaurant and 6 meeting rooms is only a 5-minute walk from the lively centre of Gouda. Throughout the hotel you will see photos of typical scenes from Gouda’s past and present, a reminder of the rich
history of Gouda. Having a train station and bus stop within walking distance, a landing stage in front of the door and an underground Q-park car park, Best Western Plus City Hotel Gouda couldn’t be more accessible!

APRIL GOUDA CHEESE MARKET Open Atelier Gouda King’s Night King’s Day at the Markt
Large, well-known events include the GOUDA CHEESE MARKET, the Gouda Ceramics Days, Crazy Saturday, Gouda by Candlelight and the Gouda Ice Skating Rink around the town hall. DID YOU KNOW... That starting from the last quarter of 2021 many events will be dedicated to Gouda750? That is when we will celebrate that Gouda received its city rights 750 years ago. See page 5. COVID-19 Scheduled events might be cancelled or go on in a revised form. You will find the complete schedule, any changes to the schedule and more information at www.welcometogouda.com
GOUDA CHEESE MARKET 1 April - 26 August
From 1 April to 26 August (except on Ascension Day, 13 May) the traditional cheese market takes place every Thursday morning from 10.00 to 12.30 hrs. As in past times, the farmers and traders seal their bargains for the best cheeses through the clapping of hands. Besides the world-renowned cheese, you can also shop at the stalls filled with regional products. For more information, see www.goudakaasstad.nl
THE GOUDA MONTMARTRE 19 May - 1 September
From 19 May to 1 September an antique, curios and collectibles market will be held in Gouda’s historic market square every Wednesday from 09.00 to 16.30 hrs. Here, you’ll experience a little bit of Paris. This is the largest open air antique and brocante market in the Netherlands. To find all antique and brocante shops, get the special brochure at VVV Gouda.
THE GOUDA CERAMICS DAYS Have been cancelled in 2021
The Gouda Ceramics Days that take place on Ascension Day and the following day, are a popular, recurring two-day event with ceramics from the Netherlands and abroad. 2 6, 20 & 27 8&9 19 & 26 28, 29 & 30 29
On Crazy Saturday it is as if you have stepped back in time to the Middle Ages. The whole of the town centre has been turned into a medieval tableau and jesters, fortune tellers, medieval maidens and esquires walk through the streets. The event is inspired by the book ‘In Praise of Folly’ by Desiderius Erasmus, who grew up in Gouda. This year the event is extra grand as it marks the start of Gouda750. See: www.zottezaterdag.nl
In the evening 1,500 candles light up the windows of the historic town hall and thousands more light up the windows of the buildings in the town centre. There are also all kinds of activities, such as a Winter Fair, walks, concerts, shows and performances in museums, churches and the streets. Highlight is the lighting of the Christmas tree between 19.00 and 20.00 hrs. See: www.goudabijkaarslicht.nl
