Examples of these special species in the Loosdrecht Lakes are, among others, the bittern, the purple heron and the Cobitidae. Clean waters are a matter of life and death here. Cycling through Gooi & Vecht’s country side

The Gooi &

Vecht area: a bikers’ paradise Get to know the Gooi & Vecht area by bicycle! There is so much to discover, and cycling is the way to do it. All through the area a network of cycling junctions has been laid out, along which the most beautiful tours can be made. And it is very easy to understand how it works. All tourist information centers (they are called VVV’s here) sell cycling tour guides from which you can pick your favourite. Or visit our website for a number of suggested tours. Every junction is marked by a map, and from one junction to the next you can just follow the junction numbers by the side of the road. Cycling here is very safe, because of the many cycling paths. Bring your own bicycle or rent a bike at one of the many bike rental shops. We warmly recommend three of our best cycling tours, two of which start from a railway station adjoining a bike rental shop.

To do in a day

To do in

There are many ways to spend a perfect day in the Gooi & Vecht area. Some of them are described here:

1. BOAT TRIP ON THE RIVER VECHT TO THE CASTLE OF OUD-ZUILEN

3. CYCLING TOUR ALONG FLOUR AND DRAINING MILLS

Breukelen is a village on the banks of the river Vecht. In the seventeenth century the Dutch founded Breuckelen on the American continent. Breuckelen is now known as Brooklyn. Rent a boat at Restaurant Buitenplaats Slangevegt, Straatweg 40 in Breukelen or around de Loosdrecht Lakes (adress: Oud Loosdrechtsedijk, Oud Loosdrecht). A scenic trip along the river takes you to Slot Zuylen, an ancient castle in Oud-Zuilen. Moor your boat here and visit this medieval castle. Restaurant Belle is located next to the castle, and its lovely terrace has a great view of the river.

This scenic tour takes you along the banks of picturesque rivers like Angstel, Gein and Vecht. Along the way you will come across ten mills. Some of them were used for draining, others for producing flour. Some of the mills are still operational. But there is more to be seen: you will also be passing beautiful places like Weesp, Loenen aan de Vecht, Abcoude and also a castle and some ancient farmhouses. And of course everywhere the best panoramic views of the rivers with their surrounding scenery. Find out more about this tour at www.gooivecht.nl.

2. THE STRONGHOLD OF MUIDEN AND THE FORTRESS ISLAND OF PAMPUS

4. THE HUIZEN NAUTICAL QUARTER AND THE HISTORICAL VILLAGE OF BLARICUM

In Muiden an interesting part of Dutch history comes alive. Take a walk over old city ramparts, have a glimpse into the life of Count Floris V and visit one of the many fortresses built in the nineteenth century to protect the Netherlands against its enemies. They are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Defence Line, and were proclaimed a World Heritage Site by Unesco. In Muiden you can visit the thirteenth century Muiderslot, also known as the Amsterdam Castle. And across from Herengracht 33 you will find the ferry that takes you to the island of Pampus in less than 30 minutes. The Stelling van Amsterdam Visitor Center is located on Pampus, and it is well worth a visit. Be sure not to miss the Pampus Experience, an interactive tour inside the fortress.

In Huizen, the Gooi & Vecht area’s harbour, you can take a stroll along the fisherman’s wharf. The wharf is newly built in an authentic style. It is like taking a step back in time, seeing the typical brown fisherboats that were used back in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. They are a reminder of times when the IJsselmeer Dam had not yet been built. Along the harbour you will find some lovely terraces where you can have a cup of coffee or even a good meal. Spend the second half of the day exploring the historical center of the village of Blaricum. Many artists of national and international renown found their inspiration here. Blaricum is well known for its beautiful old farmhouses and for one of Holland’s best ice-cream parlours, De Hoop. The village also boasts a couple of top-of-the-bill restaurants. Just outside the village, boardering the Blaricum Heathlands, the sheep pen is the spot to visit with children. Restaurant De Tafelberg, just across from the pen, offers a lovely terrace with lounge seats and a beautiful view of the heathlands.

n a day 5. THE FORTIFIED TOWN OF NAARDEN In Naarden you can visit a museum, take a boat trip and make a beautiful hike all in one day. The Netherlands Fortress Museum offers all you want to know about the Dutch defence history. Taking a tour here is a terrific experience for both young and old. At the museum you can also buy tickets for a boat trip along the Naarden canals. View the town from the water! It is not hard to find a nice terrace or a fine restaurant while strolling through the winding streets of Naarden. Visit the Naarden Tourist Information Center for a (self-)guided tour of the town. For the best views just follow the 3,5 kilometer path on top of the fortifications which have been built in star formation. And maybe you will even have time left to check out the recently opened Museum of Scales.
