>> THANKS TO SMARTPHONES, IT’S EASIER THAN EVER TO SHARE THE LOVE. BUT, AS YOU PREPARE TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT ROLE SOCIAL MEDIA WILL PLAY ON THE BIG DAY. know your LIMITS

share the FUN

AT THE CEREMONY:

#TRUELOVE:

You may be fine with your guests snapping your arrival at the ceremony, but many couples prefer to see smiling faces, not a sea of glowing smartphones, as they walk down the aisle. Others prefer not to have ceremony pictures posted to sites like Instagram and Facebook before they have a chance to enjoy the moment fully. (Smartphone and social media use at the reception is much harder to restrict.)

A few weeks before the wedding, consider setting up a Dropbox account, special Facebook page, or Facebook album, in which you add guests as “contributors,” for uploading photos and/or establishing a hashtag to tag photos and posts on Instagram and Twitter— this lets everyone share the memories. Print this information with any needed instructions or passcodes in the ceremony program and on little cards to distribute at the reception.

communicate your WISHES SPELL IT OUT:

Social media is a great way to share treasured memories and to include loved ones — just make

sure to set the parameters in advance so that sharing online doesn’t eclipse the joy of being in the moment.

* anna

POST

shares her top wedding-worthy secrets to social media savvy.

Clue in your guests about your social media and photo-sharing preferences on your wedding website, your ceremony program, or at the ceremony with an announcement by a groomsman just before the mother of the groom is seated: “The bride and groom have requested that you turn off your phones and hold all photos and social media posts until they have exited the ceremony.” In fact, doing all three is a good idea.

prepare f or TAGGING GO WITH THE FLOW:

Prepare for your loved ones to post the inevitable tweets, status updates, and photos. While you may not want guests taking photos at the ceremony, once they’re at the reception it’s virtually guaranteed they’ll start taking pictures of key moments and friends. Just roll with it —you’re sure to enjoy looking through your friends’ pics in the days after the wedding, as much as you’ll enjoy perusing your professional photographer’s album.

go the DISTANCE GET IT ALL ON FILM:

Consider a different kind of “social” media. When a really close friend or relative can’t be at your wedding, a video chat can bring them into your day in ways a phone call can’t. Schedule ten minutes at your reception when you can slip away from the party and give your longdistance guest your full attention. Show them your dress, rings, bouquet, the venue, and any other special details of the day.

be PRESENT LIVE IN THE MOMENT:

While sharing fun moments and capturing each detail on film for your social feed can be lots of fun for everyone, the most important thing to keep in mind is to live in the moment—after all, this day comes once in a lifetime! Throughout the day, remind guests (perhaps through a note in the program) that your photographer will be documenting the day for all to see.

the key to keeping guests in the moment is to establish your preferences clearly and early on. ask your wedding party to help spread the word. anna p t

BEFORE THE RING. While pursuing their law degrees, Ashley Miller and Bill Schurmann met on a class trip to Cleveland, Ohio. “In true ladylike fashion, I challenged Bill to a drinking game, Ashley says. Sparks flew over the next few days, and the two were pleased to discover they were both headed to Washington D.C. that summer to start their careers. The pair reconnected in the nation’s capital, and the rest was history. “On one of our first dates—my birthday—Bill surprised me with a dinner cruise on the Potomac. Sailing past the monuments at twilight, I knew he was the one, Ashley says. THE PROPOSAL. After their first summer together, Ashley and Bill fell in

love with each other and with Washington D.C. Years later, as the pair exited their classic row house, Bill surprised his sweetheart with a heartfelt proposal. Afterwards, Bill took Ashley out for a seemingly impromptu engagement dinner—but when they arrived at the restaurant, their parents and siblings were waiting for them. As the evening came to an end, Bill had one more trick up his sleeve. “He arranged for an evening cruise on the Potomac just like our first date, Ashley says. “On the boat we were joined by more friends and family. It was absolutely perfect. THE DAY & DESIGN. Ashley and Bill’s frosty fete sparkled with vintage

whimsy and modern grace. Instead of classic winter colors, the couple integrated rich jewel tones to pop against the cool gray-and-white chevron print that served as the basis of their design. “Amid all the colors and components of our decor, we wanted a unifying element to tie everything together, Ashley says. Flower girls looked cute in chevron skirts, while the distinctive pattern also made an appearance on table linens and cookie favors. The couple shared their favorite flavors with friends and family during cocktail hour with tasty Thai cuisine and a wine bar.

ADVICE

BEFORE THE RING. While many love stories seem to involve an element of fate, Leslie Moos and Andrew Weir’s first meeting truly seemed like something out of a novel. On a drizzly New York City night, the pair met by chance, just days before Andrew was scheduled to fly home to Scotland for the holidays and potentially leave America for good. The pair connected from the get-go, and even the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean couldn’t keep them apart. They kept in touch via email until a promotion brought Andrew back to the States. He and Leslie began dating almost immediately after he returned. THE PROPOSAL. Andrew had recently moved back to New York after living

and working in San Francisco, during which time, he and Leslie dated longdistance. Celebrating their reunion and his sweetheart’s birthday, Andrew surprised Leslie with a trip to Barcelona. On the first night of their vacation, he proposed over tapas. Leslie’s answer was a resounding “Yes, and the ecstatic couple explored the city wrapped in a cloud of romantic bliss.

Midwest, the couple knew they wanted a location that was a dreamy escape for all of their guests coming from near and far. The Belvedere Mansion in the picturesque Hudson Valley fit the bill perfectly. “The eclectic venue gave us the opportunity to have the wedding weekend of our dreams, Leslie says. “We fell in love with the beautiful country scenery and were inspired by the ornate decor that would provide the perfect setting for our American-Scottish wedding. To complement the charming details of their venue, Leslie and Andrew infused rustic sensibilities into the day, with thrifted vessels spilling with blooms and tables adorned with vintage doilies that had been collected by Leslie and her family. To top everything off, the couple had a traditional cake topper with the bride and groom in Scottish kilts.

DE TA IL S THE DAY & DESIGN. Inspired by the historic beauty of their venue, Erin and Ben crafted a celebration that combined vintage whimsy with soft elegance. In a nod to the coming spring, the couple chose a palette of creamy whites and pretty pinks with pops of cheery yellow, “I wanted to capture the joyful spirit of the northeast at the start of springtime,” Erin says. “When everyone is celebrating rejuvenation, vibrancy and happiness.” Taking their cue from the historic locale, the couple created an effortlessly elegant atmosphere, where silver antique candlesticks and vases complemented sparkling chandeliers, and twinkling candlelight filled the ballroom with a warm glow.

THE PROPOSAL. Lauren has always loved New York City in the wintertime,

especially visiting the tree at Rockefeller Center with her family every year, so it was only natural that she and Stephen ended up adopting a trip to the Big Apple icon as one of their holiday traditions. After dating for five years, Stephen had an extra special Christmas gift in mind: an engagement ring. He found a spot right beneath the huge tree and popped the question as he and Lauren held hands among the festive crowd, making Lauren feel as though the city lights were twinkling only for her.

Lauren was in fifth grade and Stephen was in eighth grade—and friends with Lauren’s older sister. Neither would have guessed that they would someday be saying “I do and spending the rest of their lives together. After being friends for many years, Stephen began to pursue Lauren after she moved to New York City, where he, too, was living. Initially, Lauren wasn’t interested when Stephen asked her out, but one night, after months of effort on his part, she got a sudden urge to give him a call and catch up; the rest is history.

THE DAY & DESIGN. Using a base of muted yet romantic tones —think

dusty rose, ivory, and gray with pops of eggplant— Lauren and Stephen crafted a celebration that had a vintage vibe and a unique feel. “Our theme was a mix of antique and romantic with rustic touches, Lauren says. “We carried these sensibilities throughout the course of the day. The creative duo also designed a custom wedding logo, featuring an old-fashioned skeleton key motif that they used on their save-the-dates, invitations, and throughout the day’s decor. Sealing the sweet sentiments of the day, the natural splendor of the Hudson Valley, where the pair grew up and first met, was the perfect backdrop for the lovebirds to say “I do.

2013 Emily Glass and John DeGasperis grew up in neighboring towns in upstate New York, and Emily always harbored a crush on her older classmate. One sunny afternoon, she was lounging by the pool with her girlfriends when John pulled up to the house to see her friend’s older brother. Sixteen-year-old Emily playfully declared that there was no doubt: “Johnny D” was her future husband. A schoolgirl crush developed into true love when the pair was formally introduced a few years later and began dating. “Looking back on that moment in high school is so funny now,” Emily says. “All along it was meant to be.”

the proposal. In February of 2011, John was pursuing his law degree upstate and Emily was working in the fashion industry in New York City and recovering from a bout of bronchitis and pneumonia. John came to offer support, and Emily suggested they grab a quick dinner downtown. As they started home, Emily asked John if she could borrow his hat to warm up. Patting down his pockets, she discovered a ring box tucked in his parka. “As he got down on bended knee in the doorway of this dive restaurant, I said ‘Not here!’ and bolted out onto the sidewalk to say ‘Yes’ in the heart of Manhattan,” Emily says. “He was planning to propose later that weekend, but the spontaneity made it all the more special.” the day & design. THE DAY & DESIGN. Inspired by the easy romance

when they were both students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where Daniel was on the hockey team and Kristen played tennis. Their collegiate courtship eventually blossomed into everlasting love, and as fate would have it, the picturesque region where they met was the place they decided to tie the knot years later. In fact, their reception location—Pat’s Barn—was recently renovated and restored by the couple’s alma mater. THE PROPOSAL. Wanting to surprise Kristen with his proposal, Daniel

planned a high-flying day of romance, playing off his girlfriend’s love of helicopters. He and Kristen were ostensibly running errands together when Daniel pulled up in front of a non-descript office building. Kristen was making small talk with a bystander about the helicopter parked outside the building when a pilot walked out and asked if Kristen was ready for her ride. As the couple posed for a photo with the copter, Daniel popped the question. “Of course, I said “yes—who wouldn’t with a helicopter, a gorgeous ring, and a handsome man down on one knee? Kristen says. “He then opened a bottle of my favorite champagne, and we flew back to the city. THE DAY & DESIGN. By combining vintage elements—like a restored,

antique whitewashed window displaying their seating chart—with cozily luxurious pieces, the chic duo set the mood for upscale rustic romance. With attention to detail and an infusion of glamourous elements, Kristen and Daniel proved that barn weddings can most certainly be super luxe. The twohundred-year-old restored barn where they held their reception was bedecked with shimmering linens, crisp white hydrangeas and orchids, and bronze-hued candles. “A cupcake tower, covered with white flowers to make it look like a wedding cake, completed the night. Our guests enjoyed multiple cupcake flavors —such as pink champagne with cherry filling, and tropical rum and apricot, Kristen says.

BEFORE THE RING. Long before Susan Park and Jun Bae discovered their permanent romantic connection, they crossed paths many times, thanks to a shared spiritual connection: They originally met in church. However, their love story didn’t begin to spark until Susan returned to New York after a stint in Washington D.C. and fell back into her former church community. Jun bided his time, nursing a crush on Susan, before coaxing her on a date by offering himself as a foodie tour guide of New York City—despite the fact that she was a gourmet epicure and he turned out to be fairly clueless in the grub department. “With very little sense of direction, taste, or smell, Jun was a terrible food guide, but he was and remains my favorite and most trusted companion with whom to gallivant through uncharted territories, Susan says. However, days before the big night, their reservation fell through. Jun scrambled, making countless phone calls to get the dinner back on and succeeded in the nick of time. Finally, after strolling with her through the farm’s greenhouses, he asked his sweetheart the magic question. THE DAY & DESIGN. Right off the bat, the couple knew they wanted a celebration that was anything but traditional. They chose Blue Hill at Stone Barns for its special part in their love story and its intimate atmosphere. The stunning vistas of the farm provided a perfect backdrop for their wedding day vision. “We were inspired by the natural beauty of our surroundings, and chose a palette of gray and blush tones to keep things simple and elegant," Susan says. celebration rife with rustic charm, Chelsea and Brian knew the Historic Barns of Nipmoose was the ideal venue. “We wanted to get married somewhere off the beaten path,” Chelsea says. “The locale’s one-of-a-kind character made it the perfect place.” The couple wove homespun touches into the details of their day, creating down-on-the-farm elegance. A color palette of soft ivory and creamy pinks complemented the timber beams of the barn for an effect of weathered whimsy, as sparkling lights cast a cozy glow over the barn’s interior. Capping off the magical day, a double rainbow appeared in the sky as guests toasted to the couple’s everlasting love.

of Technology and Jenna Porter was at nearby Nazareth College, the two had the happy fortune to be introduced by mutual friends. The pair quickly felt a connection and enjoyed getting to know each other as they finished up college in the picturesque Finger Lakes region—all the while embarking on bike rides and urban exploration, listening to new music together, and sampling tasty local cuisine. As they discovered many common passions, their love grew deeper and deeper, and soon, they both knew it was meant to be. THE PROPOSAL. Drawing inspiration from Jenna’s passion for food, Kyle

took her on a romantic date to a local Rochester area eatery called Lento, just a short walk from Jenna’s apartment in the Neighborhood of the Arts. After Kyle asked Jenna to spend the rest of her life with him—and she answered with a resounding “yes—the gastronomically savvy pair kept the celebration of their new engagement going by indulging in a delicious pastry from local bakery Goodness Cakes. THE DAY & DESIGN. When the time came to choose their nuptial locale,

there was no question in Jenna and Kyle’s minds about where to tie the knot. “We chose to get married in Rochester because it is the city where we met, Jenna says. “We live here. The roots of our lives together are in this amazing place. They proceeded to complement the natural early-summer beauty of New York State with a bold color palette of eggplant and gold tones, which showed up everywhere from the exotic-looking floral arrangements to the customized cake topper—complete with hipster glasses on the faces of the tiny bride and groom. In keeping with the super-personal vibe, Jenna’s family members provided musical accompaniment for the heartfelt and traditional ceremony, while Jenna added heirloom jewelry, passed down from her great-grandmother, to the center of her bridal bouquet.
