other’s lives long before they said “I do.” Acquaintances for ten years through mutual friends, the pair harbored secret crushes on each other. In the spring of 2010, John finally gathered up the courage to ask Ingrid on a date. Selfproclaimed “plant geeks,” the couple bonded over their shared love of forestry on an excursion through the breathtaking Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Sparks flew, and the casual date promised to be the first of many memorable moments together. the proposal. Ingrid was a graduate student, and after she finished a particularly rough exam, her sweetheart treated her to a weekend of rest and relaxation in Kennebunkport, Maine. Strolling through the gardens of the famous Franciscan Monastery, the couple paused to take in the harbor views. Romance was in the air. A gentle sea breeze kissed the shoreline as John got down on bended knee. An antique diamond ring sparkled in a hand-carved wooden box. “I couldn’t contain myself,” Ingrid says. “I called out to a passing boat, ‘We’re getting married!’”

Inspired by the seasonal splendor of their surroundings, the couple chose an autumnal theme, focused on the warmth and wonder of New England in October. “We strove to honor the season, but we specifically said no to pumpkins and cornstalks,” Ingrid says, “We wanted to avoid the typical accents that can sometimes overwhelm events this time of year.” Ingrid and John gave classic autumnal accents a new twist with interesting collections of flowers and antique accessories. Ticking-stripe napkins, handmade by Ingrid’s mother, seasonal pies, and vintage postcards completed the homespun nature of the day with a sophisticated twist. Creative simplicity served up with elegant flair made Ingrid and John’s farm-fresh celebration unforgettable.

the proposal. As Julie and Paul’s romance blossomed, their most treasured

moments were spent at home relaxing. From cooking gourmet dinners to curling up with a good book, it was the simple things that made their nights together magical. When the time came to pop the question, Paul knew the cozy and intimate setting of their living room would be the perfect place. When Julie saw Paul standing beside her with the dazzling diamond ring, all she could say was “Yes.”

rustic details, Julie and Paul chose a soft color palette of white, ivory, and burlap. Twine-tied accents and diy touches complemented kraft paper menus for an effect of homespun whimsy, while floral arrangements brought the space to life. “The neutral backdrop gave us the freedom to go big with the flowers,” Julie says. Bright, jewel-toned blossoms spilled from mismatched vintage vessels that Julie and Paul had scavenged on trips to the local antique shop. The couple treated their guests to a delectable dessert bar, featuring a selection of cakes, pies, and ice cream, displayed among a collection of heirloom family photographs in antique frames. Capping off the evening, the newlyweds proceeded to the patio for cigars and a sparkler sendoff to begin their next adventure together as husband and wife.

Mingling over hors d’oeuvres, she was introduced to Jeff Bates by a ski buddy from her days as a collegiate competitor. The pair hit it off instantly, and their casual conversation over cocktails left Jeff absolutely smitten. “At the time, Emily was working with the Tanzania Children’s Fund,” Jeff says. “Not only was her work overseas amazing, it was a great excuse to get in touch with her again.” the proposal. when Maine’s forests weren’t as frosty as usual, the couple took a weekend trip to Jackson, N.H., seeking some snow. Following a traditional church ceremony in Emily’s hometown of Yarmouth, the newlyweds hosted a celebration rife with coastal charm at the summer home of the bride’s family. “I grew up vacationing on Cape Elizabeth,” Emily says. “The property has been in my family for over one hundred years. I always knew I wanted to get married here.” Inspired by the seaside locale, the couple chose a cool color palette of crisp white, fresh green, and French blue. before the ring. Sarah Harrison and Ben Van Heuvelen’s romance began in college, as many love stories do. They struck up a romance during their coed years in Connecticut, and the connection lasted well past graduation day. After college, the pair carried on a long distance romance while Sarah lived in New York and Ben headed to D.C. Eventually, Ben left the capital to be closer to his true love. Soon enough, the question of their future together became “when,” rather than “if.” Early on, it was evident that they would be together forever. the CEREMONY. Honoring Ben’s roots, the couple opted for a nontraditional Quaker-style ceremony. Guests gathered in a circle in silence, until individuals felt spiritually moved to speak. For an added personal touch, Sarah and Ben chose to officiate the ceremony themselves, and were delighted with the way this unique twist on tradition played out. Even the weather seemed to join the quietly spiritual celebration. “Amazingly, it rained on our wedding day,” Sarah says. “Rather than dampening our spirits, the weather added an ethereal sense of serenity that made the weekend all the more special.” the day & design. The couple chose to say “I do” on the idyllic shores

of Sandy Island on Lake Winnipesaukee. Sarah grew up vacationing on the picturesque island with her family, so the locale held a special place in her heart, and Ben quickly fell in love with the area’s tranquil beauty. The couple infused the day with rustic charm, with most guests staying in quaint cabins on the island itself, and culled much of their wedding inspiration from the stunning vistas at their locale, setting the scene with custom letterpress maps of Sandy Island included in their invitations. Since family togetherness is very important to both Sarah and Ben, they were overjoyed that all of their loved ones could share their deep fondness for this beautiful lakeside escape.

before the ring. Sarah Mattice and Patrick Hill’s romance was a long time coming. The couple first met while working together in Boston. Over the next two years, they developed a strong friendship, meeting for coffee, and bumping into each other on the T and at gatherings with mutual friends. Finally, on the Fourth of July in 2006, the pair went to the Boston Independence Day fireworks spectacular, and the spark that had been there all along revealed itself. They began dating, building a strong relationship as Patrick left his job to attend law school. After he graduated, the pair moved to the North Shore together. the proposal. Wildflower arrangements in mismatched glass vessels topped the tables lined with burlap table runners. Found wooden accents and whimsical pennant-flag table numbers complemented a lobster trap adorned with miniature-buoy place tags in the perfect fusion of coastal and countryside sensibilities. After cocktail hour on the lawn, guests enjoyed a family-style feast and danced the night away. A sparkler send-off completed the magical evening.

The bride’s uncle officiated as the pair exchanged hand-written vows beneath a wooden arbor crafted by the groom’s father. “Having our loved ones not only attend but participate in our ceremony made it all the more special,” Sally says. the WEDDING WEEKEND. Wanting to share their love of Maine’s natural beauty with their loved ones, Sally and Gray welcomed guests to the celebration with a charter sail across Frenchman’s Bay, followed by an Oktoberfest-themed rehearsal dinner. At the tented reception, antique compasses and maps of the couple’s adventures abroad set a tone of wanderlust whimsy, as his-and-hers cupcakes arranged on mismatched luggage took center stage in a spread of sweet treats. Continuing the theme, guests pinned happy wishes to a map and left with custom luggage-tag favors. Ryan stumbled across Molly’s profile on a popular dating site, and knew instantly she was something special. The pair connected via email and chatted on the telephone for a few weeks, until they agreed to meet for dinner at the Common Man in Concord. “When we first laid eyes on each other, the spark was undeniable,” Molly says. That first date turned into many more, proving Molly and Ryan were truly a match made in heaven. the proposal.
