Leslie Miller and Ben Wellington have New York University and music of the Counting Crows to thank for their first meeting. While studying at NYU, Ben often spent afternoons in Washington Square Park playing guitar. Leslie, a tour guide for the school, concluded her tours in the historic park. One day, Ben was strumming “Goodnight Elizabeth” by the Counting Crows, a favorite song of Leslie’s. “After he finished, I asked to borrow a piece of paper,” Leslie says. “I wrote down my number and walked back to the admissions office. We started dating soon after.”

THE PROPOSAL. For Ben’s thirtieth birthday, Leslie planned an elaborate
“food tour” through Brooklyn and Queens. Before heading out to meet friends, Ben asked if Leslie would mind stopping by Washington Square Park. They ended up on the bench where they first met, and after a few moments, Ben told Leslie to look behind her. And there it was, a plaque that read: “Ben and Leslie, met here in 2003, engaged here in 2011, to be continued...” Ben then got down on one knee with a little black box that held his great-grandmother’s engagement ring. THE WEDDING WEEKEND. The couple wanted to share the inherent charms of the North Fork with all of their loved ones. “When we imagined our wedding, we kept coming back to this idea of our friends and family staying in rented houses with us to celebrate the wedding for more than just the weekend,” Leslie says. Leslie and Ben organized a wine tour and spontaneous day at an apple orchard for their guests to showcase the best of the area. “We wanted a location with an authentically rustic feel, and the rural character of the North Fork fit the bill,” Leslie explains.
THE DAY & DESIGN. Among seasonal decor consisting of hay, fresh apples, and gourds, Leslie and Ben set the mood with an original selection of antique props and family heirlooms. “We chose a variety of different vintage fabrics for our napkins, adorned the tent with different quilts—one for each bridesmaid—and had ball jars filled with local wildflowers,” Leslie says. MARTHA CLARA VINEYARDS OFFERED KATIE & JOE EVERYTHING THEY WANTED FOR THEIR WEDDING DAY. “AS SOON AS WE WALKED INTO THE SPACE, WE KNEW IT WAS A BLANK CANVAS THAT WAS READY TO BE MADE OUR OWN,” KATIE SAYS.

Though they were both students at the University of Delaware, Katie Frey and Joe Cushing didn’t meet until the spring semester of their senior year. The two had a class together, and Joe couldn’t help but confide in a friend about his crush on Katie—a girl he’d never formally met or spoken to. Serendipitously, Joe’s friend knew Katie and arranged an introduction on St. Patrick’s Day. “Maybe it was the luck of the Irish, but we were immediately drawn to each other,” Katie says. When Katie moved back to New York after graduating, the couple continued a long-distance relationship for three years before living together in Delaware.

THE PROPOSAL. Katie and Joe spent Labor Day weekend with her family
THE DAY & DESIGN. Both enamored with thrifted treasures and

The couple had recently added a new puppy to their life and loved playing outside with her. “One day, we woke up early and took the puppy to a nearby park for a morning walk,” Katie says. “We walked through the trails and came to a field of sunflowers. In the middle of the field there was a beautiful clearing, as if it were made for a romantic proposal.” Almost as soon as that thought entered Katie’s mind, Joe was down on one knee.
heirloom aesthetics, Katie and Joe exercised their design sensibilities when planning their nuptials. The crafty couple painted their dinner menu on repurposed windowpanes, displayed hand-calligraphied place cards, lettered by Katie’s mother, on an antique shutter wall, and created their own table marker signs. “For us, wedding planning was not a stressful experience at all,” Katie says. “It was an opportunity for us to bask in creativity, and to dream up a perfect day to celebrate the love that we were so blessed with.”
THE CEREMONY. Wanting to give their intimate vineyard ceremony a
distinctly personal feel, Katie and Joe took their vow exchange very seriously. Joe hand-built the arbor that he and Katie said “I do” beneath, and the pair wrote their vows together. “"We said the same vows, but each made small changes in the wording to emphasize each other’s differences," Katie says. "We wanted the ceremony to be modern, but to still incorporate religion into it." Complete with several meaningful readings and blessings, Katie and Joe’s ceremony was as touching as it was unique.

While seniors at Columbia University, Jessie Handbury and Jon Rubinstein were fortunate to be introduced by a mutual friend. Their good luck was short lived, however, as their relationship began at the end of the school year. Shortly after graduation, Jon moved to New Orleans for law school, while Jessie stayed in New York City. Jon was back in the city that spring, visiting Jessie, when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. In the aftermath of the tragic storm, Jon decided to stay in New York permanently with his true love.

One such weekend, Jessie had plans to go for a morning run with her dog. “Jon woke up unusually early and decided to join us,” Jessie says. “On the beach, he stopped me and got down on one knee and proposed.” Jon’s proposal beside the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club, which later served as the couple’s reception site, set the tone for their picture-perfect wedding.

With guests traveling from as far away as Australia, Jessie and Jon wanted their wedding weekend to be an experience to remember. “The wedding was the perfect chance for us to share Bridgehampton with our family and friends,” Jessie says, noting that the town has always been a special place for them as a couple. “It was great that so many people came and rented houses for a week or so. It gave us a chance to show them what we love about the area—golf, vineyards, and the beach— in a really relaxed way.”
