flowing sundresses and dainty sandals embody the spirit of spring, replacing bulky winter jackets and sturdy boots. let the spring weather bring natural accents, like delicate feathers, refined turquoise, and seashells, to your personal style. “seaside swoon,” page [72] our surf-inspired gown and design feature, demonstrates the ease with which sophisticated motifs complement rustic decor and bohemian details. the rise in temperature creates the perfect opportunity to incorporate saltwater sensibilities into high fashion and nautical design with seafaring accessories page [78]and homespun driftwood garlands page [87]. summer is the ideal time to enliven diy projects with nature, art, and visions of the past. my grandmother, a native vermonter, wove these elements into her daily life. an outdoor enthusiast, she spent summer days foraging for berries and living off the land. she taught me about the dignity of dirt underneath my fingernails, while also teaching me an appreciation for all things that sparkle. her passion for antiquing furthered my love of time-weathered trinkets and lives on in the pages of this magazine. we vermont vows encourage you to draw from your own heritage and include a mixture of heirloom details, couture elements, and vermont’s authenticity in your special day. our vibrant “color palette” section, pages [135-178], draws from the organic shades found in the blossoms of spring and lush orchards of summer to prove that vibrant inspiration can bloom in your own backyard. continue to be inspired by the best of vermont as you peruse our “made” section, page [68]— overflowing with unique and eco-chic treats that add a pinch of local spice to any warm-weather wedding.

etiquette

[with

>> it’s a snap! “wediquette” expert anna post gives brides the key tools & advice they need to work with their wedding photographers to capture every special detail. number one

number four

LET’S MEET:

PRINT IT:

Start by viewing a variety of candidates’ work online. When you’ve narrowed the field, meet with prospective photographers in person. Look for personality qualities that inspire confidence and show an ability to organize and take charge, yet allow you to feel relaxed. Bring visual examples of what you like from magazines and the internet. Having a clear idea of what you like stylistically helps potential photographers understand your point of view, and ultimately makes your initial meeting much more productive.

Negotiate the inclusion of an album with your photographer, or have photos on a cd, and obtain copyright permission to create your own album after your wedding. Look for a service that provides high-quality printing and design, archival papers, and strong, sewn bindings. Don’t forget albums for parents and grandparents.

number TWO GETTING TO KNOW YOU:

it’s always wise to follow your instincts when choosing the photo style that is most appealing to you. at the end of the

day, the style you choose should reflect your unique personality and the tone of your wedding.

* anna

post

gives brides the tools to capture every magic moment.

An engagement shoot is a smart way to get to know your photographer. Use the photos for your wedding website, save-the-date cards, engagement album, or guest book. The shoot is also a chance to practice relaxing in front of the camera and to discover which types of photos are important to you. Have fun with the engagement session, and let your personality shine through.

number THREe INK THE DEAL:

Always have a written agreement which spells out—among other things—the name of the actual photographer, times, places, number of hours, types of photos, key shots, number of touch-ups, and copyright permissions. Having everything in writing will help to ensure you get the photos you want with no confusion. You will end up feeling much more relaxed on your special day, knowing that your agreement with your photographer is solidified in writing.

number five BE CONSIDERATE:

Your photographer is not a mind reader, so communicate clearly. Provide a list of key people you’d like photographed and assign someone who can point them out.

ready, set, smile SHOT LIST a few of our favorites: þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ

Kate + John

KATE & JOHN CHOSE the tRANQUIL TOWN OF MIDDLEBURY AS THEIR WEDDING DESTINATION BECAUSE IT MARKS THE PLACE WHERE THEIR LOVE STORY BEGAN. “WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE TOWN, THE COMMUNITY & THE VERMONT WAY OF LIFE,” THE COUPLE SAYS.

middlebury, vt 09.17.2011 kate rose photography

before the ring.

In a sweet love story befitting the true essence of Vermont culture, Kate Kerrigan and John Dawson have the locally beloved sport of hockey to thank for their first meeting. As luck would have it, John was Kate’s younger brother’s college hockey coach: “My sneaky little brother staged our first meeting at a Middlebury College football game during the last parents’ weekend of his college career. To be honest, I think he was going to miss his coach after he graduated, and thought that the potential set up with his sister might help,” Kate says, reflecting on her first encounter with her future husband. As it turns out, Kate’s brother had quite a knack for playing Cupid, because undeniable sparks flew that day in the crisp Vermont air. Soon enough, Kate and John were totally enamored with each other and were texting, chatting on the phone, and exploring the Middlebury area on dates. Three years later, Kate and John both felt the pull back to the idyllic Green Mountain state as they began to plan the wedding of their dreams in the same town where their love began.

the proposal. After dating for three years, Kate and John had planned a romantic winter getaway to the island of Nantucket, with elaborate visions of cozy strolls on the beach and relaxed, indulgent dinners out. However, the weather ended up boasting a record wind chill, which forced the couple to dispel any notions of a wild, romantic adventure and settle down with comforting bowls of leftover sweet potato soup by a crackling fire. Their ability to find romance in the stormiest of weather paid off—they left the island betrothed and more in love than ever. They later chose to serve sweet potato soup shooters at their wedding in honor of the food that led to their engagement.

traditional for their heartfelt Catholic ceremony. In a nod to her family history, Kate carried her grandmother’s prayer book, which had been passed down through generations, and also had a delicate piece of her mother’s wedding dress woven into her bridal bouquet. A professional event coordinator herself, Kate left no detail unattended to. She chose a crisp and classic color palette of navy blue and white, juxtaposed with warm, homey accents of tans and browns. Charming, rustic details and bold pops of polka dots—John’s tie included—gave their reception a playful, yet sophisticated, touch.

before the ring + proposal.

While Erin Westerman and Michael Disco share an alma mater and several mutual friends—they both attended Syracuse University but graduated four years apart—they didn’t actually meet until Erin serendipitously moved into the apartment next door to Michael’s in 2006. A friendship neighborly began with viewings of How I Met Your Mother, and quickly blossomed into an undeniable romantic connection when, according to Erin, Michael “found his mind” and plucked up the courage to officially ask Erin to be his girlfriend. After the couple had been going steady for several months, they treated themselves to a Garth Brooks concert, at which Michael confessed that he had a feeling the two would one day end up married. Erin was quick to dismiss his bold declaration as a result of the booming music and flowing libations. Little did she know, Michael was as serious as can be. Three years later, Michael arranged an exhilarating trip to Las Vegas to see Garth Brooks again. During the encore, Michael proved to Erin that he had meant what he said three years earlier: he dropped to one knee and asked her to be his wife.

the day. Erin and Michael wanted their wedding weekend to be a light,

joyful experience for their guests and family members. With Erin’s family in Chicago, and several friends from California, the couple chose summer in Vermont as the perfect time and place to bring everyone together. Choosing to have an outdoor wedding gave the nuptials a laid-back vibe, which in turn complemented the decidedly Green Mountain-worthy maple syrup fountain–complete with mini pancakes and waffles for dipping. To beat the muggy Vermont summer heat, Erin and Michael kept guests cool with a frosty Ben & Jerry’s cart at the reception, and ceremony programs that doubled as fans.

the Design. Creating a playful mood for every aspect of their special day, the couple filled their reception with love, laughter, and fun by choosing to have individual dinner and dancing portions of the evening. “We decided to separate dinner and dancing areas so that we could create spaces that enhanced each part of our wedding,” the couple explains. After guests enjoyed a tasty dinner in the candlelit, water-view pond pavilion at the Equinox, the party moved to luxe, lounge-style tents. Erin and Michael chose an ethereal palette of peach and ivory for their flowers, and used comfy couches, rustic decor pieces, and homespun place cards to set the mood for a non-stop celebration late into the night.
