share the FUN

AT THE CEREMONY:

#TRUELOVE:

You may be fine with your guests snapping your arrival at the ceremony, but many couples prefer to see smiling faces, not a sea of glowing smartphones, as they walk down the aisle. Others prefer not to have ceremony pictures posted to sites like Instagram and Facebook before they have a chance to enjoy the moment fully. (Smartphone and social media use at the reception is much harder to restrict.)

A few weeks before the wedding, consider setting up a Dropbox account, special Facebook page, or Facebook album, in which you add guests as “contributors,” for uploading photos and/or establishing a hashtag to tag photos and posts on Instagram and Twitter— this lets everyone share the memories. Print this information with any needed instructions or passcodes in the ceremony program and on little cards to distribute at the reception.

communicate your WISHES SPELL IT OUT:

Social media is a great way to share treasured memories and to include loved ones — just make

sure to set the parameters in advance so that sharing online doesn’t eclipse the joy of being in the moment.

shares her top wedding-worthy secrets to social media savvy.

Clue in your guests about your social media and photo-sharing preferences on your wedding website, your ceremony program, or at the ceremony with an announcement by a groomsman just before the mother of the groom is seated: “The bride and groom have requested that you turn off your phones and hold all photos and social media posts until they have exited the ceremony.” In fact, doing all three is a good idea.

prepare f or TAGGING GO WITH THE FLOW:

Prepare for your loved ones to post the inevitable tweets, status updates, and photos. While you may not want guests taking photos at the ceremony, once they’re at the reception it’s virtually guaranteed they’ll start taking pictures of key moments and friends. Just roll with it —you’re sure to enjoy looking through your friends’ pics in the days after the wedding, as much as you’ll enjoy perusing your professional photographer’s album.

go the DISTANCE GET IT ALL ON FILM:

Consider a different kind of “social” media. When a really close friend or relative can’t be at your wedding, a video chat can bring them into your day in ways a phone call can’t. Schedule ten minutes at your reception when you can slip away from the party and give your longdistance guest your full attention. Show them your dress, rings, bouquet, the venue, and any other special details of the day.

be PRESENT LIVE IN THE MOMENT:

While sharing fun moments and capturing each detail on film for your social feed can be lots of fun for everyone, the most important thing to keep in mind is to live in the moment—after all, this day comes once in a lifetime! Throughout the day, remind guests (perhaps through a note in the program) that your photographer will be documenting the day for all to see.

the key to keeping guests in the moment is to establish your preferences clearly and early on. ask your wedding party to help spread the word. anna p t

BEFORE THE RING. A little luck, a common interest, and a friendly hand brought Marie Finan and Doug Wall together. Though the pair were both undergraduate students pursuing history degrees at Lafayette College, they did not meet until their senior year in a mandatory seminar course. Sitting with a mutual friend in the classroom, Marie and Doug slowly got to know one another, as lingering looks over the books led to an introduction. Study buddies turned into lovebirds, and the college sweethearts found everlasting love. THE PROPOSAL. Returning from a typical day at the office, Marie was welcomed home with a sweet surprise. Waiting patiently with gentlemanly grandeur, Doug stood on her doorstep with a bottle of champagne and a lovely engagement ring in a true-blue Tiffany box. Completely ecstatic and blissfully happy, the pair celebrated with a night out on the town. Doug treated his brideto-be to a celebratory dinner at The House, an unabashedly romantic restaurant in New York City, to complete their perfect evening. THE DAY & DESIGN. After a heartfelt church ceremony, the newlyweds

and their loved ones proceeded back to Doug’s family home for an evening of enchantment. Inspired by the estate’s lush backyard, Marie and Doug chose a rose-garden theme for their essence-of-summer celebration. A creamy color palette of petal pinks and ivory complemented the seasonal blooms, while pops of pewter gray added a sophisticated note to the feminine scheme. Guests enjoyed sweet sips beneath the breathtaking canopies, then proceeded to the tennis court-turned-tented ballroom for a fabulous feast. Handwritten place cards, engraved with a refined rose monogram, topped the tables, and crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead. The couple completed the elegant soiree with a funky finish, transforming the pool into a plexi-glass dance floor that glowed brilliant blue.

blossomed during a New York City summer, when a mutual friend had the spot-on instinct to set the two up on a date. For their first date, the Manhattan-based pair met for a spirited round of drinks and snacks with friends on the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel, where they hit it off immediately. “There was an instant spark, Lilly says. In fact, the connection was so strong that they met up again in the Hamptons two days later, finding time to be together among outings with friends and family at the beach. THE PROPOSAL. Lilly and Niklas were on a romantic and relaxing vacation in

Maui, Hawaii, and thoroughly enjoying their time by the beach. One evening, as Lilly was getting ready for their sunset dinner, Niklas prepared a special surprise. Lilly emerged to discover an elegant wine and cheese course awaiting her on their private terrace. Before the breathtaking backdrop of the tropical paradise, Niklas dropped to one knee and asked Lilly to spend the rest of her life with him.

THE DAY & DESIGN. The sophisticated duo chose Water Mill for their nuptials due to the destination’s role in their love story. “The Hamptons have always been a very special place for us, Lilly explains. “Living in Manhattan, we spent a lot of time getting to know each other in the Hamptons on summer weekends—from the early days of our courtship to now living here full time. The beauty of the region inspired the pair’s color palette of greens, browns, and earth tones, which transformed their reception into a veritable enchanted forest of summer romance. Centerpieces of velvety soft moss and glowing lanterns set the mood beneath a clear tent, while hand-harvested vegetables and herbs served as au naturale table markers. For Lilly and Niklas, the highlight of the day was bringing loved ones from Europe, St. Louis, and Manhattan together for one supremely sweet celebration.

As soon as they started dating, they both realized that not only did they have many mutual friends, but they seriously could not get enough of each other. A year into their relationship, they embarked on a cross-country road trip that cemented the thought in both of their minds that they were meant to be together. THE PROPOSAL. For Heather’s 30th birthday, Mike planned a romantic trip

to Cabo. On their first day in the beautiful locale, the couple took a hike—an activity they had always enjoyed together—with their intended destination a remote spot called Lover’s Beach. Before embarking on the final, quite steep, leg of the hike, the couple stopped to rest, and Mike paid attention to every detail as he spread out a blanket. He asked Heather to stand up—which initially worried her, considering the fact that they were hiking in a remote area—as he knealt and popped the question. THE DAY & DESIGN. BEFORE THE RING. Both Danielle Harte and Angelo Lombardi were busy New Yorkers with careers that made it difficult for their love lives to take center stage. So, like many fated lovers before them, they turned to a popular online dating site to help them find true love. After connecting on the web and exchanging emails, Angelo planned their first date at a romantic tapas restaurant called Pipa. As soon as Danielle walked into the restaurant, romantically aglow with boho-chic chandeliers, the couple locked eyes, and both knew they had stumbled onto something special. THE PROPOSAL. After a whirlwind romance featuring several travel

adventures, including a celebratory trip to Thailand for Danielle’s birthday the year they met and a romantic trip to France, Angelo knew the time was right to ask his true love the ultimate question. He planned a vacation to California’s Napa Valley over the Christmas holiday. They arrived to perfect weather and headed right to Frances Ford Coppola’s famed winery. It was there, surrounded by European-style charm and tree-lined paths, that Angelo got down on one knee and asked Danielle to be his wife. THE DAY & DESIGN. Danielle’s family has a long history on the East End, including a home they built there, and Angelo’s Italian family felt a strong connection to the vineyard country, so Greenport was the perfect spot for the pair to tie the knot. In addition to the picturesque scenery, the couple’s wedding was extra special because they strove to make it truly their own. “We liked the idea of a blank-canvas venue, so that we could customize our design. Nothing about it was cookie-cutter, Danielle says. The pair chose a color palette of purple and blue, and bedazzled the venue with handmade touches and glamourous details, including fabulous feathers and glitzy gemstones. The most delicious element of the day: Bottles of vino, homemade by the groom, served as favors.

BEFORE THE RING. Ashley Bruhnke and Brandon Schultheis knew they were dealing with something meant to last from the moment they met—they just thought that something was Ashley’s tattoo. Inspired by her lifelong love for the sea, Ashley decided to get a small starfish tattoo on her foot. Following a friend’s recommendation, she found herself in Brandon’s studio. The pair got to know each other during the session, and Brandon knew he had to see his charming customer again. “I actually left her tattoo a little bit unfinished, just to have an excuse to see her again, Brandon remembers. Though the timing wasn’t right when they met, the spark was undeniable, and when the stars did finally align, Ashley and Brandon were both ready for a lifetime of love. THE PROPOSAL. One Friday afternoon, Ashley returned home from work to discover a surprise. Brandon, who should have been at work, was waiting by the door and instructed her to pack for a romantic weekend getaway to the beach town of Montauk, New York. The next morning, Brandon led Ashley down the sandy shore to the farthest point of the beach. There, against the backdrop of a spectacular sunrise, he asked her to marry him. THE DAY & DESIGN. The couple chose classic coastal colors for their special

day. Anchor details and accents of sunny yellow, nautical navy, and soft gray complemented the serene beauty of the locale. Continuing the seaside theme, country-club class met beach-bum chic with bridesmaids in short, navy dresses and groomsmen sporting cool gray suits and blue boat-shoes. After a true “toesin-the-sand ceremony, the happy couple proceeded to the reception where brilliant bouquets of sunflowers popped against the natural seashore scenery. Guests made memories in the photo booth and enjoyed scrumptious cupcakes. The couple’s custom seal, inked with their intertwined initials and a dainty anchor, completed the design with seafaring style.

Mike Hauke met under silly circumstances. On her first day at work in the Chelsea Arts Building, Jill made a trip to the ladies room and discovered it was in fact coed. “The restroom was essentially a series of closets, with a shared open sink, Jill says. When she exited her stall, she bumped into Mike, washing his hands. The couple chatted and exchanged names. Months later, still smitten with the stranger from the john, Mike asked Jill on a date, and the rest is history. THE PROPOSAL. Every year Mike’s family travels to Aruba for a weeklong

extravaganza of sun and sand. One night at dinner, Mike’s uncle toasted their beachfront feast with a speech. Engrossed in Uncle Danny’s tale of an ancient treasure map and a rare seashell, a completely unsuspecting Jill was shocked when Mike revealed an engagement ring nestled inside a clamshell. The sentimental proposal was made all the more special when Jill’s parents appeared on the scene to join the celebration. Surrounded by their nearest and dearest, the happy couple toasted their engagement under the stars all night long. THE DAY & DESIGN. Simple elegance and rustic romance sparkled at Jill and

Mike’s North Fork nuptials. In a nod to their pasts, they hung black-and-white family photographs from trellises to greet guests in a warm, lantern-light glow as they entered the reception. Long family-style tables topped with neutral linens encouraged loved ones to share conversation and tasty bites, while glamourous candles glowing in mercury glass and metallic-mink chargers added a playfully sophisticated note to the celebration. Guests grooved on the dance floor all night long and left the reception with lavender-filled muslin favors, handmade by the bride, in honor of deceased family members. “We ended the evening with a sparkler send-off, Jill says. “It was the perfect way to complete the perfect day.
