wellwed, we have a thing for diy projects. re-purpose, restyle and reuse is a here motto we encourage—and a credo we ourselves wear proudly. the slow pace and organic purity of wintertime offer the perfect opportunity to take on fun diy projects and paint unique vintage treasures in a new light. dotted throughout “color palette” pages [101 - 138] you’ll find homespun diy creations you can use to put your own spin on your celebration and plan your wedding from the heart. ideas and inspiration abound in “style file” pages [141 - 161] where we’ve collected some of the best in weddings from seasons past. as the temperature drops this season, the night air becomes rich with the glitter of falling snow, and snowmen dot the yards of neighbors, we invite fall and winter couples to embrace a sense of vintage glamour that has withstood the test of time, romantic, all encompassing and grand—much like true love.

as the weather turns, fur stoles and silk scarves re-emerge from closets and dresser drawers, evoking the accessories worn by the silver screen sirens of yesteryear. ruffles and lace adorn jackets and sweaters—impractical, pretty, and utterly sweet. wool coats and suede gloves prove that classic is forever. the brilliant colors of autumn set the tone for monochromatic shades, embellished with sumptuous splashes of color, and winter’s blanket of white acts as a veritable blank canvas for playful, animated hues. “cold spell ,” page [73] our special gown and design feature, tells a similar story, of chilly winter winds, warmed up with hints of color and old hollywood glamour brought to the shores of the hamptons. long winters are an invitation to play with the accessories of the season—scarves, hats, and mittens can be adorned with lace, ruffles, tulle, or whatever you fancy. flourishing imaginations bring about tables adorned with wool scarves page [75] or hand-knit hats embellished with crocheted flowers page [99].

there is a certain element of romance & glamour to the east end’s fall & winter seasons, something that i believe to be less evident during the year’s warmer months. the lively days of spring & summer—full of garden parties, picnics & strolls along the beach—fade away, replaced by a more quiet allure. we watch the swirling leaves of autumn & wait for the first magical snowfall.

TANYA MALOTT PHOTOGRAPHER: Tanya Malott studied Parisian architecture and photographed fashion models—she certainly didn’t intend to be a wedding photographer. But more than twenty years ago, a bride in the fashion business received Tanya’s photography services as a wedding gift—and Tanya discovered a new passion. Today, she’s one of the most renowned, successful, and experienced photographers in the business. Coming from an era where photography was a male-driven field, Tanya believes that women have permanently changed the look of wedding photography.

Inspired by everything around her, including writing, travel, art, nature, fashion, and friendships, Tanya is bursting with passion for her work. Her years of expertise give her insight into the industry, and she reminds us that the most expensive photographers earn their price tag and reputation the hard way: They can’t afford to make mistakes, so they don’t. Having worked with small and large weddings and every range of budget, Tanya advises brides: “Know what you want, or you will likely be disappointed with what you get.”

>> unsure which wedding customs to uphold? we turned to “wediquette” expert anna post for the “something old & something new” of wedding day traditions. for more , visit anna @ emilypost.com. number one

SOMETHING OLD/SOMETHING NEW:

THROWING RICE:

Traditionally, “something old” represents the bride’s family history; “something new” shows optimism for her new life; “something borrowed” represents good karma from a happily married family member; and “something blue” recalls the pre-Victorian fashion for blue as the preferred dress color, symbolizing purity. As for the sixpence, which symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, it was decimalized in 1970. Replicas can be found for sale on the internet, but given inflation you might consider a good old American quarter instead.

For years, showering the couple with rice was a symbol of good luck, but it turns out that rice is harmful to birds. A switch to birdseed had groundskeepers up in arms dealing with unwanted weeds in flower beds, and rose petals quickly become slippery and are hard to clean up. Today, clever brides arrange for streamers, flags, or bubbles and wands as cheering alternatives that don’t harm or create a mess.

number TWO YOUR DAUGHTER'S HAND:

“something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a silver sixpence in her shoe…” custom says

a bride should have these items on her person on her wedding day. then there are all those tossing traditions—rice, the garter & the bouquet...

* anna

post

gives modern-day brides the scoop on old traditions.

This pre-marriage consultation with your future in-laws was the de rigueur first step of the marriage process in the days when the focus of a marriage had more to do with property than love. While today’s woman makes her own decisions about marriage, it is still a courtesy for the prospective groom to talk to both of her parents about his intent to marry.

number THREe THE FIRST LOOK:

Christian custom decreed that a groom not see his bride until she walked down the aisle. In Jewish tradition, a groom places his bride’s veil over her face before the ceremony—a reference to the story of Jacob, who mistakenly married the veiled Leah instead of her sister Rachel. Today, many couples arrange a photo-op before the ceremony to capture that “first look” moment when the groom sees his beautiful bride for the first time.

number five GARTER TOSS:

This tradition harkens back to the day when wedding guests would tear off pieces of a bride’s clothing as a souvenir. Though it’s been reduced to an ornamental garter in these modern times, the tradition of a groom removing his bride’s garter and tossing it to the singleton males is losing its appeal. If it’s on your wedding program, keep it in good taste.

number six BOUQUET TOSS:

The girl who catches the bouquet is destined to marry next, which can have more women running away than hoping to catch it. Still, this remains a “must do” for most brides. Nowadays, instead of tossing the whole bouquet, a mini or breakaway “tossing bouquet” is a clever substitute. Alternatively, leaving the whole “next to be married” scenario behind, the bride may present her bouquet to her mother, sister, or maid of honor.

whatever traditions you include—be sure each one means something to you & you’re not just fulfilling them for tradition’s sake.

Allison MacCullough and Kyle O’Neill first met on a rainy June evening at Allison’s favorite summer bar in the Hamptons. The two were hanging out with their friends, but it didn’t take long for Kyle to notice Allison. It took a couple of attempts for Kyle to catch Allison’s attention, but once he did, it was clear the two had a strong connection.

immediately began calling friends to join them at their home in Montauk. During the meal, with a little help from his brother, Kyle slipped off to build a bonfire and hide a bottle of champagne in the nearby sand dunes. When Kyle returned to the house, he invited everyone down to the beach to enjoy the surf and firelight, but only Allison accepted. “I found out later that Kyle had told the guys of his new plan, so they knew better than to join us,” Allison explains. On the beach, Kyle professed his love for Allison and dropped to one knee, asking her to be his wife. To this day, Kyle swears that she “grabbed the ring and did a back flip in the sand.”

Allison drew on this affinity for Montauk while planning her big day, focusing on colors and themes prevalent in the area. The couple selected a palette of navy, green, and coral because the colors best accentuated the natural beauty of Montauk. “We felt that using the colors of our surroundings would make it feel like the entire town was decorated for us,” explains Allison.

Lela says, “I remember walking down the aisle as if I was floating, I was so happy to be marrying my best friend. I’ll never forget it!” the proposal. In keeping with their love for surfing, Lela and Joseph always chose beach destinations when they planned getaways together. It was on one of these escapes to Maui that Joseph asked Lela to be his wife. The two had spent the evening on a romantic dinner cruise before going for a walk along on the beach, pausing when they found a spot to enjoy the endless horizon. It was at that moment Joseph leaned in towards Lela and whispered how much he loved her, as he slowly dropped to one knee. the venue. For both Lela and Joseph, choosing a wedding destination was simple. It had to be the beach. “We had so much history that involved spending time on the beach—it was where we met, where we fell in love, and where I said yes! It only made sense for our wedding to continue with our life’s theme,” says Lela. The Allegria Hotel on Long Island opened the same year as their engagement, and they both adored its chic, modern design with a beach twist and its location overlooking the sandy shores. It would have been hard to find a more perfect place to celebrate their marriage, symbolically or location-wise. As Lela says, “It was like it was meant to be!” After settling on their venue, the couple embarked on planning for a surf-themed wedding.

before the ring. It was five years ago, while surfing the tumultuous

waves of Long Island, that Lela Cerff and Joseph Liso caught their first glimpses of each other. Lela was new to the surfing world. “I was just starting out, and Joseph was the veteran,” Lela remembers. During that first summer, they spent most of their time with each other as Joseph taught Lela how to surf. And it wasn’t long before their relationship evolved into something much deeper. “We fell in love rather quickly and were inseparable from the start,” says Lela. By the time summer came to an end, they both knew they were meant to spend the rest of their lives together.

the design. For the wedding day, it seemed only fitting that Lela and Joseph’s surfboards were displayed along a table containing guests’ place cards. Custom lighting in shades of pink illuminated the entire room with a rosy glow. “The lighting gave such a warm feeling to the event, and also gave it the modern feel we were looking for,” says the bride. Lela carried the pink color palette throughout, using the same warm tones for her custom-made, blushing pink dinner menus, which lent a splash of elegance to the place settings. The bridesmaids wore pale yellow chiffon gowns, complemented by vibrant bouquets bursting with pale pink and yellow blooms.

One of the couple’s favorite early dates started with a delicious brunch at the Boat House in Central Park. After eating, they wandered through the weaving paths of the park, stumbling upon a wedding taking place in the Ladies Pavilion. They were both charmed—and both secretly thinking that one day they might be exchanging their own vows. The moment left such a fond impression on the two that Dave knew he had to recreate it when he asked Carolyn to be his wife. Months later, recruiting the help of his sister and her husband, they set out to decorate the Ladies Pavilion with roses and champagne. Dave once again took an unsuspecting Carolyn to brunch at the Boat House. After the meal, the couple made their way through the Park until they reached “their” pavilion. Seeing the beautiful decorations, Carolyn remarked, “Oh, Dave, someone must be getting married,” just as Dave dropped to one knee before her.

the ceremony. Carolyn, being a bit traditional, was initially opposed

to the idea of taking wedding pictures before the ceremony. However, for timing purposes, it just made more sense, and it turned out to be one of her favorite parts about the day. “I was so emotional leading up to the ceremony, it was calming to see Dave before the wedding,” she says. It was also nice for the two to spend some quality time with their families before all of the commotion began. Despite seeing each other before the ceremony, Carolyn’s walk down the aisle was no less meaningful, and she couldn’t help but shed tears the whole way. Carolyn carried the same beautifully embroidered handkerchief her mother had carried on her own wedding day. “I was so reassured knowing that we had this connection as I was walking down the aisle,” she says.

At which, Dave surprised their guests by playing drums for a three-song reunion with his old high-school band. “Anthony wore my late grandfather’s cuff links; I wore my mother’s ring,” Jessica says. “On my bouquet, I pinned an antique bird of happiness that I’d bought while traveling with my dad.” the proposal. A year and a half later, on the first day of spring, the

couple went for a ride on Anthony’s Harley across the Brooklyn Bridge to Dumbo and walked down to the park. On this warm, beautiful day, the pair strolled hand-in-hand, pausing by the playground and sitting on the benches to bask in the sun. Unbeknownst to Jessica, Anthony had plans that would ensure he and Jessica remembered this simple walk through the park for the rest of their lives. While walking, Anthony suddenly let go of Jessica’s hand. To her surprise, he got down on one knee and pulled out the most spectacular diamond ring she had ever seen. In the middle of the bustling park, surrounded by newly blooming flowers, Anthony asked Jessica to be his wife.

before the ring. Jessica Graves and Anthony Bianco first locked eyes while playing on opposing teams in a dodgeball match in Little Italy, New York. Whether it was love at first sight or just the intensity of the game, they made quite an impression on each other. They had their second encounter just a few weeks later at the gym, where Anthony hung around just long enough to ask Jessica out on a date. The pair went for dinner in the South Street Seaport, followed by a sunset cruise around the Statue of Liberty. Despite the conventional nature of their date, it was then that both Jessica and Anthony began to fall in love. “The day was totally cheesy and absolutely romantic,” Jessica says. featured wedding professionals floral design: Karen Lenahan Designs [klenahandesigns.com / Page 72] Photography: Allan Zepeda [allanzepeda.com] reception site: sole east [soleeast.com / Page 23] additional contacts: accommodations: Beachcomber / cake: Cakes by Mona / coordination: DM Events / entertainment: DJ Keith & Encore Music / event rentals & linens: Classic Party Rentals / favors: Montauk Salt Water Taffy & Wat-aah! / gown: Anne Barge / hair & makeup: Erika Franco / tuxedo: J.Lindeberg / wedding officiant: Joanna Fernandes

the celebration. Sixty-five of the couple’s closest friends and family witnessed these two best friends exchange vows, which Jessica says was one of her favorite moments of the day. However, this touching moment couldn’t prepare anyone for the energy-filled reception that would follow. As testament to the exuberant personalities of the bride and groom, the dance floor was full the entire evening. What’s more, Jessica and Anthony, in honor of that memorable game of dodgeball, decided to once again exhibit their competitive sides by holding a dance-off, which ended up being one of their favorite moments of the wedding. All the guests were on their feet for most of the night, especially the newlyweds. “I’m so happy we ditched the Sinatra song and choreographed dance we’d originally planned for our first dance,” Jessica says. “Instead we went with ‘Bad Things’ by Jace Everett, and we just freestyled.” This switch-up added an extra flair that boosted the adrenaline levels of all the guests, so they could keep up with the excited newlyweds. Dancing the night away on the East End, Jessica and Anthony could not have chosen a better way to celebrate their beginning.

the proposal.

One December night, Kat and Aaron were walking along the beach admiring the Montauk Lighthouse, strung with twinkling Christmas lights. Kat called Aaron “boyfriend,” a nickname she’d given him over the course of their relationship. Aaron began to tease her, saying, “I like that you call me boyfriend, but I’d prefer that you call me husband,” before getting down on one knee and asking Kat to marry him. On their drive back from East Hampton, they decided to enjoy that evening together and share their big news the next day. However, as they were finishing dinner at Indian Wells Tavern, one of Kat’s best friends and future maid of honor, Caitlin, spotted Kat and her new ring. She ran around the bar, signaling the bartender to send over champagne, and shared Kat’s news with all the diners. “She was the perfect first person to find out about our engagement,” says Kat.

wedding weekend. Sag Harbor was the natural choice for the location of their wedding. It was where Kat had spent her entire life, where the couple met and worked, and where many of their family members reside. It was perfect. Their wedding weekend kicked off with a beach party for all of their guests. Missing from the weekend was Kat’s brother, who passed away in 2003. “We wanted a rustic & rural setting for our wedding with a mix of city glamour & elegance,” explains Twah. the destination. Twah and Tim knew that they wanted a destination wedding to create a mini-vacation for all of their guests to celebrate. After considering everywhere from Nantucket to France, the couple decided the North Fork offered the perfect blend of country atmosphere and city chic. “We wanted a rustic and rural setting with a mix of city glamour & elegance,” explains Twah. The North Fork was far enough away to feel like a destination, but still close enough that Twah could be actively involved with the planning. the ceremony. The bride and groom used music as an opportunity to customize their wedding to fit their personalities. Instead of walking down the aisle to the traditional wedding march, Twah floated towards her husband to the tune of Michael Buble’s “Everything.” The bridal party strutted down the aisle to Led Zeppelin, while INXS’ “Beautiful Girls” accompanied both mothers. After the vows, the newlyweds exited to Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Starting Something.” It was important to Twah and Tim that they start the celebration off on the right note—one of fun and relaxed elegance.

Creating a celebration of rustic elegance required the use of an eclectic group of elements—“crystal chandeliers mixed with burlap details, velvet chairs with metal lanterns,” explains Twah, who chose a chic palette of grays, burlaps, and soft peaches. Each bridesmaid chose her own dress in a shade of grey and a pair of brightly colored shoes, adding a high fashion ambiance to the country setting. In order to take full advantage of their beautifully attired guests, Twah and Tim ditched the traditional guest book and opted instead for a photo booth. Twah took picture frames, a framed slate board, and her own velvet armchair out onto the lawn, where guests could write phrases on a mirror and take photos for the couple to remember their special day.

Although he knew that there would never be a "perfect" moment to propose—Tim was able to whisk Twah away for a relaxing weekend on Nantucket, under the guise of taking a break from her worries. On their first evening, after dinner and a romantic late-night stroll, Tim asked Twah to join him on the picturesque garden veranda. jenny + Steve

For Jenny & Steve, Amagansett conjured up feelings of peace & tranquility, fond memories of summers spent there as a couple, as well as providing inspiration for their nautical wedding palette of white & gold. the proposal. Jenny and Steve had the happy circumstance of a rich shared history, and as a result made many wonderful memories together over the years. In August of 2009, Steve drew upon the essence of what made his and Jenny’s love so unique—their shared fond experiences. In a grand romantic gesture, Steve crafted an elaborate scrapbook that chronicled his and Jenny’s relationship and presented it to her at their New York City apartment as he took the ultimate plunge and asked Jenny to be his wife. After Jenny enthusiastically accepted, the betrothed pair headed out to dinner, where Jenny discovered that Steve had flown in both her and Steve’s parents—from Florida and Virginia, respectively—to share the joyful moment.

the ceremony. Both Jenny and Steve are incredibly close to their families, so they felt strongly about honoring their parents’ religious traditions with a classic Catholic ceremony. They eschewed the new, sprawling Catholic church in East Hampton in favor of the charmingly quaint church in Amagansett. “We wouldn’t have had it any other way,” gushes Jenny. “The church was brimming with our friends and family, and it was so great to have a little, modest church with simple, but beautiful, florals so that the focus could be on the ceremony itself.”

before the ring. When teenage lifeguards Jenny Miller and Steve

Dutton finally acknowledged their mutual crushes near the deep end of a Vienna, Virginia pool, they had no idea they would end up swimming in each other’s hearts forever. After holding hands under a Washington, D.C. cherry tree on their first date, and continuing to date off and on over the next decade, the pair found themselves both living in New York City and unable to imagine life without each other. “The real truth is that after all of the years we had been dating, we really fell in love with the grown-up versions of each other,” Jenny says.

the reception. From the decadent dessert selection—champagne cupcakes, an elaborate sweet bar, and a coconut cake with passion fruit curd—and specialty key lime pie martinis, to Jenny and Steve’s surprise dance number choreographed to “Touch Me” by The Doors, there was no shortage of fun or exuberance at the reception. In between indulging Jenny’s sweet tooth and soaking up their newlywed bliss, the happy couple danced the night away—Jenny in her glittering blue Louboutin heels—until their guests departed into the night, fortified by a yummy smorgasbord of late-night snacks and to-go boxes of candy.

Kimberly + Chris

“we looked forward to sharing one of the best parts of Long Island with overseas family & friends, while incorporating both of our countries somehow throughout the event,” says the couple. the proposal. After dating for eight happy years, the big moment finally arrived. Chris planned a romantic evening just before Kimberly was to leave for a brief trip to America. But it wasn’t an ordinary dinner date; Chris took her by surprise when he insisted on a walk to one of Kimberly’s favorite spots, the foreshore of Sydney Harbor with its breathtaking view of the skyline. “Just before I thought we would leave, Chris got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife,” she says.

jamesport, ny 09.24.2010 sherrell photography

the design. Kimberly selected a palette of autumnal colors-browns,

creams, and silvers as a pleasantly neutral base, with radiant oranges, greens, and purples to ornament the bouquets and table arrangements. The most important colors, however, were more symbolic than autumn’s pleasing hues. “The main goal we had for our wedding was to incorporate both of our countries somehow throughout the event,” the couple says. With this in mind, the groomsmen planned to pin on their lapels miniature flags that wove together America’s red, white, and blue with Australia’s yellow and green. Catering By A Small Affair drew up a special menu, offering the best of both countries: rack of lamb, grilled shrimp on the barbie, macaroni and cheese, and meatball sliders. the day. Kimberly and Chris couldn’t have hoped for a more special

before the ring. When Kimberly Vollmer moved from New York to Australia for business, she had no idea she was about to discover her lifelong mate. But one serendipitous night out in Sydney while celebrating her birthday, Kimberly crossed paths with Chris Dewar, who was enjoying a rugby match with friends. “We have been inseparable ever since,” Kimberly says. “Although my original plan was to return to New York after working for two years, love has kept me in Australia.”

ceremony. “My three brothers walked me down the aisle. It was something I had always dreamed of,” Kimberly says. At the reception, the colors, flags, menus, and table settings were just right, and guests made sure to enjoy the dessert bar fully stocked with the tastiest sweets from both countries. “We fulfilled our deepest wish by having all of our close family and friends from both Australia and the United States in one room together. Although we hope it won’t be the last time, we were so happy to share that rare and wonderful moment with everyone,” says the bride.
