ROBY BEST IN SHOW AWARD The Monongalia County Fair Association and the Morgantown North Rotary Club are proud to announce the creation of the Roby Best of Show Award. The new award is named after Roby Young, longtime supporter of the Monongalia County 4-H Program and Rotary member. To be eligible for the Roby Award, 4-H participants must have a nonlivestock project exhibition display during the fair inside the Hazel Ruby Building. The award will be presented Saturday evening. With this new award, Morgantown North Rotary Club and the Monongalia County Fair hope to: 1) expand opportunities for 4-H kids to be recognized; 2) establish a partnership with another civic organization to support the fair 3) give Rotary and 4-H an opportunity to recognize and honor a longtime community supporter; and 4) add monetary support to encourage youth to do more non-livestock projects. The Morgantown North Rotary was created in 1992 and Roby joined in 1995. Roby served in nearly every leadership position in the Club and had a major role in several Rotary projects, the biggest of which was the 2005 construction of Tugboat Depot, the children’s playground on the Star City waterfront area. In 2000, when he was President of the Club, he signed off on the Overman Agreement, a fund in the WVU Foundation in memory of Dennis Overman to support medical and dental students visiting developing countries; the fund has subsequently grown to more than $20,000. Other projects include international housing and dental projects in Guatemala, raising funds for Rotary’s global effort to eliminate polio, and organizing the Rotary multiphasic health events.

Roby Young has been a behind the scenes and quiet supporter of the 4-H program in Monongalia County for many years. He served as a member and President of the Monongalia County 4-H Foundation for over 10 years and worked diligently to ensure that every child who wanted to attend camp, but could not afford to do so, was provided with scholarship money. He assisted at 4-H camp by volunteering his time to prepare and serve evening snacks, scooping out popcorn for movie night, or keeping the trash cans emptied. Additionally, Roby has helped at the Mon County Fair with exhibit check-in. Furthering his beliefs in the values 4-H instilled in youth, he ensured that his children and now grandchildren are involved in 4-H clubs and camp. Evidence of this is his attendance at the ever popular 4-H visual presentation contest to support his grandchildren. Roby made an easel for his own children to use while they gave their 4-H project presentations. The easel is now being used by the Young’s grandchildren for their presentations. Roby’s wife Carol says “We have to smile each time our grand kids participate in visual presentations. They always have to have the easel he made for our girls when they were doing the same. It’s their lucky easel.”

His grandchildren complete their project work and create amazing 4-H exhibits to be displayed at the Mon County Fair. This affords community members with the opportunity to understand and appreciate what youth involved in 4-H are learning through project work. Roby Young, along with his wife Carol, have been strong supporters of the 4-H program in Monongalia County for many years and their support is appreciated by the volunteers, members, community members and others involved within the program.

We have to smile each time our grand kids participate in visual presentations. They always have to have the easel he made for our girls when they were doing the same. It’s their lucky easel.

2016 FAIR QUEEN FAITHLYNN WALKER

On the night of August 2, 2016, I did not know that my life for the next year would be a rollercoaster of events and emotions. I hope throughout the week, you will be able to take a glimpse into my year as the 2016 Miss Monongalia County Fair Queen. Fair week was definitely the best week. It is full of food, fun, and family and friends. The Monongalia County Fair became a second home that week. Not long after the end of the fair, I rode in some parades with my fellow queens, including the WVU Homecoming and Buckwheat Festival Parades. In October, I participated in a Trunk or Treat held by the Lion’s Club where I won Best Trunk as Alice in Wonderland while representing my title. My sister queens and I held a December Calendar Raffle where we sold tickets at the mall in November. We ended up donating $6,700 to a local woman suffering from Breast Cancer. I represented the Mon County Fair at the West Virginia Association of Fairs and Festivals in January, where I had a blast with my Monongalia County Fair family. My pageant family and I participated in the Polar Plunge. Although it was terrifying because it was my first time, it was an incredible day with my Mon County Fair family. We made a great looking M&M team. In April, I was blessed with the most amazing community support when visiting Children’s

Hospital at Ruby. I was able to donate fourteen containers of needed items including 300 hats, one container of stuffed animals, four containers of entertainment items including games and toys, clothing, baby supplies, blankets and so much more. This experience was life changing. For that one day, the Monongalia County Fair was a new addition to Disney and I was the newest “Disney” Queen. I am glad I was able to share some “Mon County Fair love” with such special kids. Even though this does not include all of the events that I attended over this past year. I highlighted a few of my favorite. The Monongalia County Fair has changed my life, and I hope when you attend this year’s fair then you will feel the same way. I hope you feel welcomed to come to a place where family and friends can gather to laugh and have fun. I hope to see you August 1- 5 at the Monongalia County Fair. It has been an honor to represent such a spectacular fair, and I am forever proud to be the 2016 Miss Monongalia County Fair Queen. I will forever cherish this year, and hold onto the memories that were made this year.

With love and best wishes, Faithlynn Walker Your 2016 Miss Monongalia County Fair Queen

GAMBILL AMUSEMENTS Gambill Amusements is a family-oriented carnival traveling in West Virginia, Western Maryland and Southwestern Pennsylvania. Founded in 1941 by Quinn, Ken and Lola Gambill in their hometown of Wintersville, Ohio, it is currently o wned and operated by the third and fourth genera on of the family. The first investment was a pony ride that appeared at local fes vals, picnics a nd fairs. As the years passed, mechanical rides were added and before they knew it, instead of an extra job, it became their business. Like any family business, everyone was called on to help in one way or another. They were taught that if we would take care of our customers, they would take care of our business. A carnival is like a traveling town, with a varied g roup of people just like in any town. Unlike t he common no on that carnival personnel are Gypsies, tramps and freaks in today’s world they could more likely be your next door neighbors. A sample of the people who travel with the Gambill organiza on would include a re red policeman, a stock broker, a PRCA rodeo contestant along with many teachers, mechanics and college graduates. A s in any small business the carnival industry i s governed by many federal, state and county r ules and regula ons. Like the trucking industry, i t is governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Act and at the present me employ as many cer fied drivers as most medium size trucking companies. I n addi on, all rides are tested and cer fied. In the off-season, the rides go through an inspec on p rogram that includes Ultra-Sound Tes ng, M agnaflux Par cle Tes ng and various X-Ray Tes ng of hidden components to assure safety. I n order to insure safety, regular inspec ons f rom outside the organiza on are done by the i nsurance carrier as well as the states of West V irginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. These are w elcome inspec ons because they help Gambill obtain high safety ra ngs with all concerned. They a re proud of the fact that Gambill Amusements has always been rated as one of the safest carnival opera ons in the country.

Making Memories Through Fabric A hair stylist by trade, Jane Fleming fell in love with quilting after taking Nancy Klein’s quilting class at the Apple Barrel. “We did a star pattern in a twelve inch square and I was ‘hooked’!” Jane was a founding member of the Country Roads Quilt Guild. The group provides opportunities for quilters to meet and form life-long friendships. The group has travelled to quilt shows in Paducah, KY; Lancaster, PA and more. “We enjoy having quilting parties, sewing and quilting together. We have made memories through fabric for our families and friends to cherish.” The group continues to be part of WVU’s Mountaineer Week activities by presenting a quilt show. Sharing her love and talent, Jane taught a beginner/intermediate class at the VoTech Center for fifteen years. Knowing how many people she taught to quilt is a highlight for her. “Many of my former students still come up to me and thank me for their ‘addiction.’ Learning to quilt was the best decision and I am so thankful for all who have done it with me through the years.”
