More than 50 residents tuned into a special Charlotte Selectboard meeting held Tuesday night to remember the life of beloved resident and selectboard member Louise McCarren — a champion of municipal and state government, “a force of nature,” and the best mac and cheese maker the town has ever seen. McCarren died late last week, just months after her husband, Ed Amidon. Although McCarren dedicated much of her adult life to Charlotte’s volunteer community, her illustrious career as a public defender and her other many positions in government and the private sector made her an unstoppable force throughout most of her life. McCarren was also the first woman to chair the Vermont Public Service Board. “She was one of the leading ladies that kind of broke through that glass ceiling,” Jim Faulkner, selectboard chair and friend of McCarren for over 10 years, said. “There’s no question about that, and she was a wonderful person in the process of doing it and well respected.” See MCCARREN on page 12

Together, they have more than 65 years of living in Hinesburg between them. And they’re both running for reelection because, they say, they want to continue contributing and helping in any way they can as the town faces several issues — affordability being on the top of the list. “There is no end to what there is to learn about running a town,” Gordon said. “I just love all the folks I get to meet, and I love being a part of this community. I have been for many years, and it feels good to be able to support it in whatever ways I can.” Lamberson was first elected to the selectboard last year. It was a bit of a surprise candidacy — he See HINESBURG on page 10
