Chea Waters Evans, longtime journalist and resident of Charlotte, has upset 12-year-incumbent Rep. Michael Yantachka for the town’s seat in the Vermont House of Representatives. Evans campaigned largely on the issue of abortion and announced her surprise bid for the seat in May after Yantachka’s no, yes, and then no vote on Proposal 5, which would enshrine the right to abortion in the state Constitution. “I’m so grateful to all the voters in Charlotte and Hinesburg —

Pouech wins in Hinesburg Selectboard member beats Deeley by 70 votes COREY MCDONALD STAFF WRITER
Hinesburg selectboard member Phil Pouech has won the Democratic primary for the Chittenden-4 House district to replace longtime Hinesburg Rep. Bill Lippert, who decided not to seek reelection. Pouech, a 36-year resident of Hinesburg, bested his opponent, Christina Deeley, by some 70
votes. Pouech garnered 563 votes, while Deeley had 493 votes. Pouech did not respond to a request for comment in time for press deadline. Pouech has been a longtime community volunteer for years. He’s coordinated the town’s Green Up day for 20-plus years and has served on the selectboard since 2012.
HINESBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT
Members of the Hinesburg, Shelburne and Huntington fire departments spent a recent weekend participating in a 16-hour rope rescue course taught by Peak Rescue Institute and hosted in Hinesburg. Skills included patient packaging, carry outs, mechanical advantage systems and utilizing hauling and lowering systems.
