Letter From The Editors Welcome back to all of our loyal readers and hello to all of our new readers! First, we’d like to start off this issue by introducing ourselves as your new editor in chiefs for the 2013 -2014 year.

While the look may appear slightly tweaked, you can still expect to see the usual all kinds of topics in here ranging from global issues to local issues. Fashion is always a must, and this fall we bring to you our own fall fashion show!

As a student run magazine, we know time is limited and school is hard. We hope with our tips on studying, healthy eating and secret exercise tips, we can help to alleviate some of the college stress from your shoulders right before finals time!

We wish you good luck on your finals and a fun-filled Winter Break.

We sincerely hope that you will enjoy this issue and come back for more when we produce our spring edition which will be featured in print for the first time ever.

Now a major motion picture, this coming of age story will let you know you are not alone. Protagonist, Charlie, relates to everyone no matter their situation.

Charlie’s story of love and friendship will force you to reconsider what you need and what you deserve.

After reading this novel, the search for the moments that make you feel infinite will be an ever looming presence in your life. As Charlie’s last letter says, “This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story, you are alive. When you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder and you’re listening to that song on that drive with the people you love most in this world. And in this moment I swear we are infinite.”

Catch-22

By: Joseph Heller

Catch-22 is a war story, yet so unlike many published war novels. It is comprised of multiple tales that all conflict, yet make perfect sense with one another. One of the main characters, Yossarian, can’t plead insanity to get out of flying war missions because to plead insanity in a time of war would actually be sane. And if he is sane, then there is no reason to relieve him of duty. That’s the catch—Catch 22. Life is full of catch 22s and this novel will remind you that things are not always going to be fair and they’re not always going to make sense.

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange illustrates a world of casual crime as a hobby among teenagers. Alex’s story of crime, prison, and loss will both shock and horrify you. The language—referred to as Nadsat—will pull you into the culture of Alex, his “droogs” and “ultraviolence.” Essentially, by the end of the book, you will speak their language; you will be one of them.

Correctional institutions are questioned when Alex is forced to partake in almost torturous therapy to ultimately remove his free will to commit crime. You will begin to pity the hated Alex who becomes physically ill whenever he is around violence of any kind. By the end, it will be clear that forced morality is not very moral at all.

4. Nineteen Eighty-Four By: George Orwell

Orwell’s novel of life without human emotion that is instead filled with the ever-present oppressive government serves to be a warning to humankind. Although the year 1984 has long ago passed, the fictional story that follows the life of middle-aged Winston still applies, if not more so than the years leading up to 1984. The rebellious Winston falls in love with a woman which is illegal because all relationships are meant to serve the good of society as a whole. The story follows Winston on his quest for liberation from “Big Brother” and will have you rooting for Winston the whole time. Nineteen Eighty-Four forces us to look at what we know as historical fact and second guess every bit of it.

Breakfast of Champions By: Kurt Vonnegut

Vonnegut will force you to look at the norms of American culture as vulgar and, at times, even evil. His criticisms of everything that society doesn’t question, from sex to war, will make you laugh until you cry, yet disgust you. The New York Times referred to this as Vonnegut’s “terrifying charm.” At one point, Vonnegut tells his reader, “Once I understood what was making America such a dangerous, unhappy nation of people who had nothing to do with real life, I resolved to shun story-telling.” The idea of people having nothing to do with real life is terrifying in itself, yet the terror will evoke a keen understanding of pop culture and what works and what doesn’t.

Invisible Monsters By: Chuck Palahniuk

Invisible Monsters is the story of an ex-model, who really was a model until the majority of her jaw was shot off, creating a new identity for herself that has nothing to do with her looks. Alone, “ugly,” and no longer in the spotlight, Sharon, Bubba-Jean or whatever identity she is using today, befriends a transsexual who is only one surgery away from becoming a “real woman.” These characters will force you to rethink our society’s construction of beauty and wonder how we let ourselves get away with excluding those deemed “un-beautiful.” Palahniuk exposes contemporary issues such as gender and sexuality and questions the construction and judgment of each all the while. Invisible Monsters will show you that beauty isn’t everything, the past does not define your future, and that sometimes the greatest mistake you make will have the most rewarding and liberating benefits.

My Misspent Youth By: Meghan Daum

Daum’s memoir shows her search to find identity in the hustle and bustle of New York City and then ultimately leaving the city. Her experiences are hilariously funny while also pointing out the problem of society’s obsession with media and consumerism. This memoir tracks her life of trying to be an elite Manhattanite, but it not quite turning out that way.

The honesty in her examinations of herself are shockingly truthful. Daum’s quest for truth in the midst of a world filled with people that are afraid to look past popular culture is an inspiration. It shows that life happens and every once in a while being a little crazy isn’t a bad thing.

emember rebelling against your parents when it was naptime? Wish you still had recess after lunch instead of that biology class? When was the last time you didn’t have to worry about bills, financial aid, or buying your own soap and food?

When did homework go from coloring to writing term papers?

Wish you could go back just to appreciate the little things about being a kid and growing up? Maybe you can…

Netflix has many shows and movies you can now watch to recapture some of your childhood memories. Here’s a list of some movies and shows you can watch like you did when you were younger.

Let it take you back to a time when bedtime wasn’t after you passed out from an all-nighter or a few too many drinks. Enjoy!

Movies: The Fox and the Hound (1981) Remember this movie? It’s about a baby fox that gets taken in as a pet by a sweet elderly lady. The fox makes an unlikely friend, a bloodhound puppy. Despite warnings they’ve been given, they become inseparable best friends. As the fox and the hound grow up and go through the stages of life they begin to grow apart, that’s when the complications start to arise.

James and the Giant Peach (1996) This adventurous movie was about a young boy traveling in an enormous peach. He lived with his emotionally and physically abusive aunts after the weird and tragic death of his parents. After meeting a strange man who gives him some magical bug-like creatures, he is turned into a cartoon version of himself by accidently eating one of the magical bugs.

Soon after, he befriends a bunch of magically transformed bugs, including a spider he saved from his ugly aunts. They all travel within the peach trying to reach New York City. This movie is filled with adventure and friendship, perfect for reliving your childhood.

The Land Before Time (1994)

This movie is about Littlefoot, a brontosaurus, who becomes orphaned (noticing a pattern?). Littlefoot embarks on a journey to find the Great Valley, where it is supposed to be more comfortable for dinosaurs to survive. Along the way, Littlefoot makes a few other dinosaur friends, each one different from the other. They pull together to get to the Great Valley.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) This creepy little number is about Jack, who is some weird type of skeleton.

Jack lives in a world where everything is Halloween themed.

Ghosts, creepy creatures and other types of Halloween characters make up the community. Jack is the pumpkin king of his town.

He has found the Halloween holiday quite tedious and accidently finds Christmas-town, much like his own town, only Christmas themed. Excited about his discovery of the joys of Christmas-town, he tries to bring back and incorporate what he has learned into his own town.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) This one, at least, isn’t about poor orphaned children. This funny movie combines real people with cartoons. It is about a silly cartoon rabbit, Roger, seeking help from a cartoon hating detective, Eddie Valiant, to find out if his wife, whom he suspects, is playing “pattycake” with someone else, --whatever that means. The story takes a drastic turn when Roger is framed for murder and his only hope out of the situation is with the help of Eddie.

Shows: Dexter’s Laboratory (1996-1997) Step aside Jimmy Neutron! Dexter is a boy genius with a secret lab, which he tries desperately to keep hidden from his often oblivious parents. His annoying sister, Dee Dee, is always interrupting his experiments, breaking his inventions, and just causing trouble usually after saying, "Oooooh, what does this button do?"

Goosebumps (19951998)

Were you one of those kids who found this show scary or were you one of the cool kids who thought it was for “babies”? Whether it scared you or not, you probably still watched and enjoyed this creepy show. You were considered brave if you could watch it alone in the dark. This show was adapted from many of R.L. Stines’ books.

Powerpuff Girls (19982000)

Blossom! Bubbles! And Buttercup! Don’t forget the Professor, the Mayor, Him, and Mojo Jojo!

How could you not love this show filled with horrible puns, a quirky narrator and the catchy theme song? This show was different from other super hero shows because the heroes were sisters attending kindergarten, and were made of chemical X, sugar, spice, and everything nice.

The Magic School Bus (1994-1997)

Probably one of the very few educational shows you can remember and look back on fondly. A crazy and unstable school teacher, who never clears her fieldtrips with any parents, let alone the school board, takes her students on many unusual trips with the use of a magic school bus to teach her class about science firsthand.

Johnny Bravo (1997)

Ohhh Mama! It’s one of the most sexist shows on T.V. and your parents had no problem letting their children watch it.

Johnny Bravo, a muscular idiot with horrible pick-up lines and a nasty habit of sexually harassing women, spends most of the episodes chasing after women with little to no success. Sometimes these chases ended with Johnny getting beaten up by the women he so desperately wanted.

ith the rise of iTunes and other companies that have allowed customers to download music directly to computers and mobile devices, vinyl records have increasingly been seen as relics of an older age; dinosaurs of music recording mediums that are enjoyed solely for their nostalgia.

As early as 2006, Alex Williams, a writer for The New York Times, was mourning the death of vinyl records when he wrote, “The neighborhood record store was once a clubhouse for teenagers [...] but these days it is fast becoming a temple for nostalgia.”

Fast-forward to April 25, 2013.

Keith Caulfield, a writer for billboard. com, has made note that vinyl sales have hit a historic peak, “A total of 244,000 vinyl LPs were sold in the week ending April 21, according to Nielsen SoundScan— the largest one-week sum for vinyl albums since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.”

How, then, was the vinyl record able to make such a swift turnaround from a decaying medium to selling 244,000 LPs? Could it have been a cheap price tag that drove more customers to the medium?

Perry Davis, a Valdosta resident whom recently began listening to vinyl records (owning a library of seven records and a few seven inch LPs), doubts that a cheap price is the cause of the rise Issue 08 / Fall 2013

in popularity of vinyl records.

“Once I added up the cost of a turntable, a pair of headphones, speakers, and other equipment, I was looking at a pretty hefty price tag,” Davis said.

A quick search on Amazon will show the truth behind Perry’s statement, as turntables start at around $80 and most LPs will run around $2025 (double the price of a regular CD on iTunes).

Certainly, $100 is a steep overhead cost, and could definitely turn many younger customers away from vinyl records.

So, if not price, then what has brought about this rise in popularity?

Many new artists have contributed to keeping vinyl records relevant.

Websites such as bandcamp. com, a music store dedicated to these new artists, give customers the option of purchasing a CD, downloading the songs, or purchasing a record.

Furthermore, these vinyl records are often sold in different pressings, which are different ways in which the actual record is made (whether it be through the use of certain materials or being coated in a certain color or design). These different pressings help to add a sense of collectability to the records.

Some vinyl companies have also helped themselves by recycling old, unwanted vinyl records into new ones.

“Brooklyn Phono, one of only 14 record manufacturers left in the country, works with recycled vinyl,” says Liza Eckert, owner of the website returntovinyl.com.

“They grind down unwanted records and melt the plastic to remake into fresh pieces.”

Finally, LP’s have a look and feel unlike any other medium. The sheer size of an LP allows for beautiful, detailed cover artwork, and graphics that command attention. You could always download an album or purchase a CD, but most music enthusiasts will tell you that it doesn’t compare to holding a copy of the original vinyl.

Davis believes the rise in vinyl’s popularity is tied to the unique, physical feeling of a record. He compares owning an LP to owning a comic book to make this point.

“Sure, I can go online and download the very first issue of Spiderman, but it doesn’t compare to actually holding the very first issue of Spiderman,” he said.

Four Albums That Are A Must 1 Highway 61 Revisited by Bob It’s hard to find a place to start with this album. If you have ever wanted to listen to an album that goes from Folk, to Blues, to Raw Garage Rock, all with poetic lyrics, this album is the album for you. To this day, I have not heard such a complex album. The imagery you get from the lyrics is reason alone to get this album. Dylan changed his persona (by going electric) as well as folk-blues with this album. I can listen to this album from the first track to the last and still want more.

Thriller by Michael Jackson

I don’t think there is a single person reading this that will disagree that MJ’s Thriller is a must-listen. This album moon walked into our hearts and stayed there, and there is a reason for that. It too, reinvented music during that era, and set a new tone for musicians to come. For one of the first times ever, a black musician (apart from Hendrix) wasn’t just put into the “non-white” music division.

Epic marketed this song to the entire world and let people decide for themselves whether they wanted this or not, and they sure did. It sold fifty million copies worldwide.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

by The Beatles

Many consider this to be the biggest music changing album of all time. Before The Beatles, musicians like Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, and Elvis were the big thing.

Though they were amazing musicians, they never did do with any of their albums, what Sgt. Pepper did in 1967. The Beatles changed it all with this album. It was one of the first concept albums of that time, even the album art collage was a different look than most albums. The Beatles re-identified themselves and music all in one go.

Nevermind by Nirvana

A simple garage band from Seattle changed a decade of music and led an entire movement with this album. The 90’s were a time where the youth felt unwanted, trapped, and like outsiders. Nirvana put all of that emotion in this album and marched the youth towards music. Nirvana sounded nothing like anyone had ever heard before. The vocals were unearthly, the music was harsh and rough. Even over 20 years later, it still inspires musicians.

Vintage

Vintage pieces have been a staple in fashion for many years, since past trends have left behind their mark in attics and basements, later to be sold in salvage stores across the globe. Recently, vintage clothing has experienced a much more accepted resurgence in fashion. They add a unique touch to any outfit, and the appeal of owning a relic of the past that no one else can completely duplicate is a tempting prospect.

There comes an odd, satisfying appeal in replying to those that ask where your dress came from with, “it’s vintage.” Pieces from all eras of fashion have a place in someone’s wardrobe, as well as refurbished and replicated vintage clothes that still give an impression of the past. One of the best times of year for vintage shopping autumn, as the most beautiful and unique finds seem to emerge during these precious few months.

Thick dresses with eccentric patterns, clunky shoes or 1970s coats find their way into people’s lives during this time. Autumn also falls close to holiday season, so it is yet again an ideal time to peruse vintage shops for unique gifts for friends and family.

Smaller towns such as Valdosta don’t often offer such stores. In the past, a person would have to travel as far as Atlanta to find a decent thrift store. Naturally, this prospect was inconvenient and contributed to the lack of vintage wear for many people that did not live in or near large cities. Recently, however, Valdosta has experienced a small surge of quality vintage shops—while most appear to house curios for the home, vintage clothing has slowly begun to peek through. One such store, Salvage, boasts a large collection of vintage clothing, as well as unique and nostalgic home décor from the ages. They are reasonably priced and sell clothing that is in good or great condition. It is easily accessible to college students as well, having recently moved locations.

Wearing vintage fashions can be tricky, as it takes a keen eye to know what will look good on your body and what will look frumpy or bulky.

It is also worth the time to scan over the piece thoroughly for any tears or holes in the clothing.

Do not be afraid to try on the items you choose if there is a dressing room available, as Issue 08 / Fall 2013

this would be a great time to check if the piece will look good on you. Look for cheap statement pieces such as chunky belts to add some shape to your outfit, or unique shoes that can add color or life to an otherwise dull outfit. Many thrift stores also sell vintage accessories such as scarves, shawls, hats, or sunglasses that can add more unique flair to any outfit. Be aware that some shorts sold in thrift stores are often simply cut from old jeans, which is something you could easily do at home to save yourself some money—if you can do it yourself, then why spend the money? Finally, don’t be afraid to try something new, but if an item is uncomfortable or makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t wear it.

If you intend to pair current trends with vintage finds, try looking for any pieces that can be easily layered. Layers are an autumn trend that never die, and are often many people’s favorite part of autumn. Also look for trending colors such as mossy greens, burgundies, and any neutral colors that can easily transition into winter fashion. Two patterns that have resurged into major trends this year are plaid and houndstooth, and these are both patterns that have had a long run through the eras of fashion. Plaid, especially, will likely be easy to find at most thrift stores. Be careful not to wear too many patterns at once—if you find a vintage plaid piece, pair it with neutral darks to offset the boldness of the plaid so that your outfit isn’t screaming at everyone that passes by. Textured outerwear is another fall fashion trend that never dies, but like plaid it should be wiser to pair it with less bold pieces to keep the outfit pretty neutral. However, if you feel like crossing textures and being bold, go for it! Fashion is all about expression and how the wearer personally feels comfortable with what they choose to wear.

Fall fashion is, ultimately, a little tricky to give advice about as Georgia autumns tend to run a little humid and warm for quite a long time.

Where Northern states are beginning to throw on outerwear, Georgia is still stuck in sundresses.

For those that adore fall fashion and layering, this is very problematic weather, but every now and then Georgia gives us a little break and gets chilly. Perhaps, this year, we’ll get lucky.

The Bleu Pub

R

egardless of which set of doors you enter into, the first thing you’ll notice about The Bleu Pub is the stage. In many ways a centerpiece of the restaurant, the stage at The Bleu Pub is often the site for local bands and other acts (including comedic performances) to showcase their talent.

Once the initial shock of seeing a stage in the center of a pub restaurant wears off, the next thing to pick up on is the incredibly laid back atmosphere of The Bleu Pub. Reminiscent of a “hole-in-the-wall” or underground tavern, The Bleu Pub is anything but formal. Regardless of if you are sitting at the bar, at a table, or in one of the booths, the decor and the music (especially if you are lucky enough to go when a live band is playing) allows you to feel as though you can sit back, relax, and simply enjoy yourself.

Aside from its dual role as a performance venue, The Bleu Pub is in many ways a classic example of a downtown bar.

It offers a variety of foods including chicken strips, fried mushrooms, hummus, pub wings, nachos, salads, and sandwiches.

Yet, perhaps the biggest draw for many locals are the burgers offered at The Bleu Pub: the Vegan Black Bean, the Mushroom & Swiss, the Braveheart (which is made with peanut butter and applewood bacon), and The Dirty Bird (smoked gouda, fried egg, and applewood bacon) are just a few examples. The Bleu Pub also offers an ample selection of beers in the forms of drafts, cans, and bottles (includIssue 08 / Fall 2013

ing domestics, craft beers, and imports).

It even offers a trivia night every Wednesday.

Open for both lunch and dinner, the laid back atmosphere of The Bleu Pub along with its great food and reasonable prices provide an excellent location for college students to eat.

City Market

T

he first few moments inside City Market presents an overwhelming scene. Baby clothing and accessories line the far left walls; women’s clothing, in a section labeled “The Boutique,” takes up much of the right half of the store (complete with jeans, tops, and a selection of purses and other accessories).

There are various assortments of candy, local art and pottery, handmade scented soaps, and numerous other items that fill out the rest of the store. City Market is also the only store in Valdosta that carries a selection of Toms Shoes—and it is a rather large selection. All-in-all, City 21

Market seems like a collision between a country general store and an upscale, city boutique.

For many college students, the prices found at City Market might seem a bit steep. The candy, soaps, kitchenware, grilling items, and other small items sold at City Market are perfect for the college student with only a few bucks to spare.

If you’re lucky, you might even be able to find certain higher priced items on sale (patterned Toms Shoes on sale for only $35, for example). On the other hand, the items found at The Boutique range around $75 and up.

While many college students might not spend that much on pants or a top, those students concerned with fashion and with the disposable income to spare can be assured that the owner-operator of City Market, Jessica Newman, “has traveled extensively from Hawaii to New York, from Texas to Key West to find the latest and trendiest fashions.�

City Market also houses a selection of local art and pottery with varying prices and sizes, so that you can find the perfect piece for yourself or for a friend.

Yet, the City Market is more than just a general store combined with an upscale, city boutique. The Cafe at City MarIssue 08 / Fall 2013

ket offers an ever-changing lunch menu as well as coffee and a variety of other beverages. City Market also offers The Loft, an event rental space that provides a great view of Downtown Valdosta and can fit around 300 people.

Open from 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday, and always open late on First Friday, and with an incredibly friendly staff, City Market is a great place to browse or shop for yourself or for friends and family members.

A

small structure stands on 303 West Mary Street. It’s a rather unassuming building with a large logo covering the front window, a handwritten note stating the store hours for the day, and signs denoting parking in the back.

Three solitary parking spots await behind the building. After parking and walking around to the front of the building, you’ll enter into a room that might look similar to a friend’s living room (only without a television set). A slightly worn, black, leather couch sits flush against a wall next to shelves of locally designed t-shirts.

Wooden crates filled with vinyl records fill up the center of the store’s lobby, and shelves of vintage comics, magazine, movies, and books line the back of the front 23

half of the store. Bikes line the back half of the store, where you can see bike parts and repair tools scattered across a workbench.

Originally Red Door Records Restaurant, located on 136 North Ashley Street, Red Door Records has since shifted its focus from a restaurant—renowned for its hotdogs—to a store centered around vintage entertainment, restored bikes, and bike repairs. Red Door Records is usually open from 12pm-6pm throughout the week; these hours may seem odd, but the two owners and operators of Red Door Records work second jobs in order to help finance the store. However, with its close proximity to the college and low prices—posters run about $5 and the rest of the inventory (shirts, albums, magazines, Issue 08 / Fall 2013

movies, and comics) usually run about $10-$20—Red Door Records makes a great place to stop by between classes and check out the ever changing selection.

Red Door Records also offers services such as special ordering any albums they don’t have in stock, and they also offer mobile bike repairs if you are unable to make it to the store. To stay up-to-date on their selection of vinyl records, check out the Red Door Records Facebook page.

VSU Spotlight: The Counseling Center

t’s the morning—though it might be closer to the afternoon—after a long night of letting off steam, celebrating or hanging out with your friends where one drink turned into 10. Before you even open your eyes, you already feel that pounding headache, the body aches, and the waves of nausea: the dreaded hangover has arrived. You probably lie there wondering WHY? or telling yourself that you will never drink again or maybe you’re begging yourself not to get sick, but none of that changes anything. You still feel like crap. So what are you going to do about it Over the years of drinking and hangovers, I’ve compiled a few hangover remedies that have always worked for me. Because everyone is different, some may work for you, others may not.

And sometimes you just hit the point of no return and nothing you do is going to save you from your hangover except time.

Hot Tea: I usually use Earl Grey or English

Breakfast tea, but any kind will work. Take the tea bag and submerge it in hot water. Add about a tablespoon of honey to the mix to soothe the throat and head. Then squeeze 2 to 3 lemon wedges into the tea and let the peels float. Add sugar if you’d like. (Note: This is also good for colds and sore throats.)

Alka-Seltzer: Although it’s not appealing

to the taste, if you can manage to drink the entire fizzy cup, you will feel instantly better because of the soothing effects of Alka-Seltzer. You can buy Alka-Seltzer tablets at any drug store and even some gas stations. Dissolve the tablet in water and drink. Chances are you will want to give up after the first sip, but don’t quit because the end results are worth it.

To Boycott Or Not To Boycott The upcoming Winter Olympics is surrounded by a gay rights controversy. This controversy is a result of the new anti-gay laws enacted by Russia, the country hosting the events in the 2014 year. Enacted on August 22nd, the law states that any open homosexual can and will be arrested (this goes to include any homosexual athlete). The law also forbids anyone from showing any nontraditional relationship (traditional by Russia’s standards being female and male) propaganda. This law has received both national and international attention, and many people have spoken out about it---from President Obama to Lady Gaga.

One of the biggest questions floating around is whether the 2014 Winter Olympics should be boycotted. There have been a number of people wanting to boycott, but the majority of people speaking out about it have tried to dissuade America from boycotting Some people argue that boycotting the Olympics does not work based on previous Olympic boycotts.

In 1980 President Carter advocated a boycott of the Summer Olympics because the Soviet Union had their soldiers in Afghanistan. President Carter wanted the troops to leave the country. Not only did the boycott fail to persuade the Soviet Union out of Afghanistan, but the troops stayed stationed there for another ten years. In an ironic twist, the Soviet Union would then boycott the Olympics held in America only four years later.

Another argument against boycotting is that it wouldn’t hurt Russia, but instead hurt athletes involved with the Olympics. The only sure fire way to change Russia is if the IOC (International Olympic Committee) forces Russia to change their laws to coincide with the Olympic Charter. Participating in the Olympics would be fair to the athletes who want to go to the Olympics. Going to the Olympics is a life-changing event for most athletes, and the training, hard work, and dedication that goes into preparing for the Olympics would be wasted if we were to boycott.

Also, if enough people boycott, the outcome could lead to the 2014 Winter Olympics being moved to another country.

However, on Thursday August 22nd, 2013, Russia sent a letter to the IOC promising that homosexual athletes and visitors are all welcomed and will not be arrested. However, the propaganda law is still in effect and actually does coincide with the Olympic rules. They claim to have no laws against homosexuals, but the violence against homosexuals still remains an issue in Russia.

Despite the open letter, many still feel a boycott is necessary.

There are actions VSU students, faculty, and staff can take no matter their stance on the boycotting situation. There is an online petition to get world leaders to take action against anti-gay laws (https://www.allout.org/en/actions/russia-attacks). There is also a Facebook page, Boycott 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Russia, devoted to the boycott of the 2014 event that schedules events and offers support in regards to the gay community.

T

he fall season is a time for cool weather, Thanksgiving feasts, pumpkin pies, Halloween costumes, and beautiful autumn landscapes. For those students that opted out of summer courses, the fall season also marks the beginning of a new school year.

However, for a large majority of the population, the fall season is the herald for the start of a new season of football.

Freshmen coming into Valdosta State University might be surprised to find that, for most citizens of Valdosta, the most important game doesn’t happen at the professional level or the college level. Sure, every Valdostian has their favorite professional team that they cheer for, and there is also a shared sense of pride for the accomplishments of the Valdosta State Blazers, a team instrumental in earning Valdosta the nickname “Title Town.”

However, the game that most citizens of Valdosta look forward to is known as “The Winnersville Classic.” It is a game played between the two local high schools: Valdosta High School and Lowndes High School.

The Winnersville Classic match has a rather interesting history behind it. Valdosta High 41

School was the first high school built in Valdosta, and their football program was developed in 1913. This football program saw many successes, including multiple undefeated seasons and state championships. Roughly 53 years later, Lowndes High School was constructed and began a football program of its own.

John B. Lastinger is currently the president and publisher of Valdosta Magazine; however, he is also an eternal fan of the Valdosta Wildcats. A graduate of Valdosta High School and once a manager for the team, he has an almost archival memory of the achievements of the Wildcats and the rivalry between Valdosta and Lowndes.

In a voice filled with laughter and reminiscence, Lastinger recalls the beginning of the rivalry between Valdosta and Lowndes: “The rivalry started in 1966 when the new up-andcomers of Lowndes High faced the veterans of Valdosta. Lowndes lost that first match and every subsequent match up until 1977. It was 1977, the first year Lowndes actually beat Valdosta, that the rivalry seemed to really kick off. I remember

that year well. I should, after all it was my son that dropped the touchdown pass that secured the victory for Lowndes.”

For 11 years, Lowndes High School lost to Valdosta High whenever the two met on the football field. It would make sense, then, that the rivalry would truly begin in 1977, the first year Lowndes beat Valdosta, as Valdosta had to finally recognize Lowndes as a potential competitor.

Football rivalries are not a rare occurrence, as every team has its share of rivals. However, the rivalry between Lowndes and Valdosta is incredibly intense, and hostilities can often flare up and lead into heated verbal arguments or massive brawls (an issue that has often caused the two schools to increase the presence of security during any Winnersville Classic game).

Lowndes High School head coach Randy McPherson was able to provide an insight as to why this rivalry is so intense: “Look at it like the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn. It’s a huge game for the fans and the players. Lowndes and Valdosta is similar. It’s also a huge rivalry that is important for the fans and players. The difference is that with Alabama and Auburn, after the game everyone goes their separate ways and don’t have

to see each other until the next game. With the Lowndes and Valdosta rivalry, the people will leave that game only to see the fans of their rivals at churches, restaurants, and numerous other locations. It’s this close proximity that keeps the rivalry so intense.”

Certainly, the close proximity of Lowndes and Valdosta fans keeps the Winnersville Classic an intense rivalry and a match that fans on both sides look forward to with great anticipation.

Each side wants to win and every fan wants to be able to lord that win over friends, family, etc. that root for the other team. It’s these bragging rights that perpetuate the rivalry and keep the fans in expectation of the next game.

Both McPherson and Lastinger agree that the most important aspect of the Winnersville Classic match is the bragging rights allotted to the winners. When asked about the importance of the match, both men gave a slight laugh and responded, “It’s all about the bragging rights.”
