The Valdosta State football team hosts Homecoming 2022 on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Sta dium. The Blazers look to get back on the winning track after two losses each of the past two weeks, marking the first two game losing skid since 2017. The Blazers enter with a 3-3 record and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while Mississippi College also is 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in league play.

TALK 92.1 FM will broadcast the Blazer games all season long with Spencer Van Horn and Wade Beale having the call of the game. Fans also can access the broadcast at www.talk921.com. In addition, Dave Gar ner and Taylor Biddle will have the call of the game on the webstream which can be accessed at vstateblazers. com on the football schedule page for each home game this season.

The Gulf South Conference signed a league-wide, four-year agreement with FloSports to broadcast all GSC football games. The GSC package includes, all VSU football livestream broadcasts will be avail able exclusively through FloSports. • VSU leads the all-time series with Mississippi College 12-8-1 and has won the last 11 in the series, dating back to a 28-14 victory on Halloween in 1992 in Valdosta. VSU won 41-13 last season in Clinton, Miss., in a game where MC didn’t complete a pass, going 0 for 7 for the game.

• Saturday’s game against Mississippi College is the fourth time the teams have met on Homecoming and first since 1993. MC won in 1984 and 1990, before VSU won in 1993. The Blazers are 34-5 all-time on Homecom ing, have won three-straight and 19 of 20. Mississippi College is the only team VSU has a losing record against on Homecoming (1-2).

• Looking at the GSC standings this week, Delta State leads the way with a 3-0 record and a 6-0 mark overall, while there are three teams all at 2-1, including West Florida, West Alabama and Mississippi College. At 1-2 are the Blazers, along with West Georgia and North Greenville, who happen to be VSU’s next two opponents following Mississippi College. Shorter is 0-3 in league play so far. For this week, West Florida travels to Shorter for a 12 p.m., kick, followed by West Georgia at North Greenville at 1 p.m. VSU hosts the Choctaws at 3 p.m., while West Alabama visits Delta State for a 7 p.m. ET kick.

• Mississippi College enters as the top rushing team in the conference at 321.5 yards per game for third nationally, while the Blazers enter sixth nationally in total offense at 486.7 yards per game for second in the league. MC is sixth nationally in time of possession, controlling the clock for an average of 34:02, while VSU averages 28:00 minutes of possession time.

• Saturday’s contest features two of the top athletes in the GSC in VSU senior Seth McGill and MC’s Marcus Wil liams. McGill is 11th nationally in all-purpose yards to lead the league at 157.67, while Williams is second at 134.17 for 28th nationally. McGill has 399 combined kick return yards for tops in the league and 22nd nationally, while Williams has 325 yards for second in the league and 39th nationally. McGill is second in the league and 15th nationally in kick returns at a 28.5 clip, while Williams is third in the GSC and 22nd nationally at a 27.1 clip.

TREMAINE JACKSON

Discipline. Obedience. Grit. Three words that Valdo sta State University Head Foot ball Coach Tremaine Jackson lives by that have become fun damentals in his coaching philosophy. Jackson, who was named by ESPN as one of 45 minority coaches un der 45 to watch and to FootballScoop’s 2022 Minority Watch List, is in his first season with the Blazers after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons leading the Colorado Mesa Mavericks.

In just two years in Grand Junction, Jack son raised the bar both on and off the field and has quickly made an impact on the total program in Titletown since he was hired as the 11th head coach in VSU history in Janu ary, 2022. In addition to a successful 2022 Black-Red Spring Game, the team produced nearly 600 hours of community service, as sisting with Habitat for Humanity, Blazer Kids’ Day and the #ValdostaMiracles Softball Game and had 45 student-athletes achieve a 3.0 grade-point average or better in the class room.

During Jackson’s tenure at Colorado Mesa, he went 10-3 in his two seasons, including an 8-2 mark in 2021, highlighted by a thrill ing 26-21 victory over then-No. 3-ranked Colorado School of Mines. It was the Mav ericks’ first victory over a top-5 oppo nent since becoming an NCAA Division II school in 1994. Jack son’s squad went 2-1 in the spring of 2021 during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Statistically, the Mavericks finished 13th nationally in scoring defense in 2021, allowing just 15.6 points per game, while the team was 34th nationally in scoring offense at 33.7 points per game. CMU finished in the top 20 nationally in both total defense (10th – 258.2 ypg) and total offense (16th – 452.0 ypg). Jackson coached two Academic All-Ameri

cans and one AFCA Second Team All-America honoree, along with 21 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) performers, in cluding RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in Karst Hunter.

Prior to Colorado Mesa, Jackson was the defensive line coach at Texas State and be fore that served as defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian (2017-18). He also spent time as assistant head coach at the University of Sioux Falls, helping lead the Cougars to a combined 32-5 record in four seasons. Dur ing his time in South Dakota, Jackson assisted in guiding the team to a 2016 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship and postseason appearances in all three years af ter being promoted to the Cougars' defensive coordinator (2014-16). He began at USF as defensive line coach in 2013.

The Cougars went 12-1 in 2016 as they won their first-ever NCAA playoff game and finished No. 5 in the national poll. Jackson guided 11 defensive players to All-NSIC hon ors while his unit led the conference in four defensive categories.

In 2015, USF went 9-3 and earned the pro gram's first Division II playoff berth to go along with a No. 21 national ranking following an 11-1 season in 2014 and No. 18 final national ranking.

Promoted to the role of assistant head coach after those two seasons, Jackson coached seven defensive players to All-NSIC honors and a back-to-back AFCA First Team All-America defensive back in Solomon St. Pierre in both 2014 and 2015.

At Abilene Christian, Jackson led one of the biggest defensive turnarounds in the country as the Wildcats recorded their first winning season in their Division I history in 2018 (6-5).

top 25 in five different team categories in 2018 after leading the Southland Conference in pass defense in 2017.

Earlier in his professional career, Jackson had stops at Evangel University, Texas South ern and Trinity Valley Community College after beginning his coaching career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 2006 as the Javelinas' defensive line coach. He also completed NFL internships with the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers.

At Texas Southern, where he served from 2008-11, Jackson helped the Tigers win a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title in 2010 as the program led the country (FCS) in total defense, sacks and tackles for loss. They also led the country in total defense in 2011 in his lone season as the Tigers' de fensive coordinator.

Jackson, Vice President of the Minor ity Coaches Advancement Association, has served on several AFCA committees and was recipient of the 2022 Harry Butler Commu nity Service Award for dedicated community service and out standing volun teerism.

A former stu dent-athlete, Jackson played on the defen sive line at Texas Southern for two years after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Mon roe. He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Houston, where he obtained a bachelor's de gree in interdis ciplinary studies.

The Houston, Texas native has one daughter, Harmony.

TRENT EARLEY

Assistant Head Coach Special Teams Coordinator / Defensive Line First Season at Valdosta State Southern Arkansas, ‘12 Sports Management

Earley begins his first season at VSU after spending two seasons at Colorado Mesa University for now-VSU head coach Tremaine Jackson. Earley led the defensive line at Colorado Mesa, he helped the team to a 10-3 record, including an 8-2 finish in the 2021 season and posted a thrilling 26-21 victory over then no. 3 ranked Colorado school of Mines. It was the Mavs’ first victory over a top 5 opponent since the mavericks became an NCAA Division 2 school in 1994. The 2021 fall edition of the mavericks finished 13th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 15.6 points per game, finished 10th nationally in total defense, 4th nationally in yards per play. In a 2020 covid shorten season , the mavericks finished 2-1 holding opponents to 12.7 points per game, as well as 80 yards rushing a game. While also coaching current blazers Torren Calhoun to the defensive player of the year ballot for the RMAC, as well as Brian Rattery to a second team allconference finish. With Mike Gayden and 2 others gaining Honorable mention recognition.

He was elevated to defensive analyst in 2018 after joining the USF coaching staff in 2017 as a defensive graduate assistant working with the defensive line. In 2017, Earley worked with Bruce Hector, Mike Love and Deadrin Senat, who earned first team All-Conference, while Senat was drafted in the third round by the Atlanta Falcon. Winning the Birmingham Bowl to cap an 11-2 finish in 2017. At USF in 2019 the bulls finished 9th nationally in turnovers forced. He also Served as the on field DE coach in the 2018 Gasparilla Bowl.

Before USF, Earley served as a graduate assistant at the University of Texas under Coach Charlie Strong. Assisting LB Coach Brian Jean- Mary from 2015-2017. Earley assisted coach Jean-Mary with All American and Big 12 Defensive freshman of the year, Malik Jefferson, and second team ALL-Big 12 performer Pete Jinkens. In the spring of 2015, Earley assisted North Texas as a special team’s analyst.

Earley was the graduate assistant LB coach in the fall of 2014 at Northwestern State. Helping the Demon defense to a huge win over FBS program and rival La Tech. The purple swarm defense finished 3rd nationally in turnovers gained and 4th in the conference in total defense, while assisting in the development of 1st team all-southland selection Marion Chapman.

At Oklahoma Baptist , Earley coached the outside linebackers/ Rovers and helped guiding the defense to a number 1 ranking nationally in sacks per game, as well as finishing 2nd nationally in total sacks in Fall 2013.

Earley played collegiately as a Linebacker at Texas Southern, where the tigers boasted a top- 10 nationally ranked defense, and at Southern Arkansas. After finishing a successful football playing career, Earley worked for the Muleriders working with the defensive Line and linebackers helping the team to a 9-2 finish in 2012, while also finishing his degree. In his time as a Mulerider, Earley played for David Reeves, current UAB defensive Coordinator. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Southern Arkansas. Earley then went on to graduate with a master’s degree in physical education, teacher education from The University of Texas at Austin in 2017.

BRANDON ANDERSEN

Defensive Coordinator First Season at Valdosta State Sioux Falls '11 Business Administration

Prior to being hired at Valdosta State in January 2022, Brandon Andersen spent two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Mavericks under now-VSU head coach Tremaine Jackson. He helped lead CMU to an 8-2 record this past season, including a thrilling 26-21 victory over then-No. 3-ranked Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 23, 2021, for Homecoming. It was the Mavericks’ first victory over a top five opponent since they became a NCAA Division II institution in 1994.

In 2021, the Mavericks finished 13th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 15.6 points per game, while the team finished tenth nationally in total defense at 258.2 yards allowed per game. Andersen’s defense was 33rd nationally in rushing defense at 110.1 yards allowed on the ground per game, while the team was 11th nationally in passing yards allowed at just 148.1 per contest. CMU allowed just 168 first downs for the season for 16th nationally and finished 35th nationally in sacks at 2.8 per game.

Individually, CMU safety Damar’ren Mitchell earned AP Division II All-America Second Team honors, finishing with a team-high 73 tackles and registered three games of double-digit tackles. Mitchell also earned AFCA All-America honors as a second team selection. Andersen’s defense had Mitchell, along with defensive end Torren Calhoun earn First Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors, while cornerback Darrien Young and defensive tackle Brian Rattery were second team honorees.

Prior to CMU, Andersen spent three seasons with the Lions of Lindenwood as the team’s linebacker coach. He coached a strong core of linebackers, as Lindenwood allowed the fewest yards since the 2013 season. The Lions allowed just 385.3 yards per game, the best mark for the Lions in the last eight years. Andersen played a strong role in the success of Drew Seers and CJ Bivens. Seers was named third-team all-MIAA, while Bivens was named honorable-mention all-MIAA.

In his first season at Lindenwood, Andersen oversaw a linebackers unit that returned no starters from the previous season. His linebackers played a key role in the team’s defense allowing 27.2 points a game, 7.2 points fewer than the previous year. It was the first time since the 2012 season that Lindenwood allowed fewer than 30 points a game for the season. Lindenwood’s linebackers helped the Lions improve across the board statistically, including allowing over 100 fewer yards per game.

Andersen helped true freshman Drew Seers be named the team’s Newcomer of the Year. Seers, CJ Bivens, and Nate Blanchard all ranked among the team’s top-five tackles for the season.

Prior to his time at Lindenwood, Andersen served as the linebackers coach for University of Sioux Falls from 2012-2016. He was also the recruiting coordinator for his final three seasons in Sioux Falls.

Andersen played a big role in Sioux Falls’ defensive success. In the span of three seasons, the Cougars sported a 32-5 record and advanced to three postseason appearances. The 2016 squad, which was ranked in the top-five nationally, won the NSIC Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In 2016, Andersen coached a linebacker core that earned First Team All NSIC, Second-Team All-NSIC and Honorable Mention All- Conference recognition. In all he has coached seven all-conference performers.

Andersen was a four-year linebacker at Sioux Falls from 2008-2011. He was a two-year starter, and tallied 87 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and four sacks throughout his career. From 2008-2010, Andersen helped Sioux Falls to 34-1, advance to three NAIA National Championship games, and win two NAIA National Championships.

He received his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s both in Business Administration from the University of Sioux Falls.

Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks First Season at Valdosta State Dickinson College, ’12 Sociology

Bowie came to Titletown in January, 2022, from the University of Houston where he has been an offensive graduate assistant there since February 2019 on former Blazer assistant coach Dana Holgorsen’s staff. This past season, Bowie helped lead Houston to a 12-2 record, an 8-0 mark in the American Conference and a 17-13 Birmingham Bowl victory over Auburn.

Prior to Houston, Bowie spent one season with Holgorsen at West Virginia where he worked with the wide receivers under assistant coach Tyron Carrier. He also aided in game planning, scout team preparation and on-campus recruiting.

Bowie spent two seasons before WVU at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md., where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/tight ends coach and director of admissions and enrollment. He received his coaching start as a football coaching intern at Florida International University in the summer of 2011, before becoming the tight ends and quarterbacks coach for four seasons at Gilman School in Baltimore.

Defensive Backs

First Season at Valdosta State

Purdue '16 Health and Safety Education

Richards came to VSU in January, 2022, as the defensive backs coach after working this past season with current VSU head coach Tremaine Jackson at Colorado Mesa. Prior to CMU, Richards spent three-and-a-half years at Oregon State as a defensive graduate assistant. He also had stints at Virginia Union (2016) and Rutgers (2017).

Richards was a 38-game starter at safety at Purdue, and helped the Boilermakers win the 2011 Little Caesar’s Bowl. For his career he made 168 tackles, two interceptions and also helped Purdue qualify for the Heart of Dallas Bowl. While at Purdue he played for current OSU defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar. Richards graduated from Purdue in 2016 with a degree in health and safety education and a master’s degree in student services from Oregon State in 2021.

While at Lake Mary High School in his hometown of Orlando, Fla., he was a 2010 All-Central Florida and All-Seminole County by the Orlando Sentinel. In addition, he was a 2011 Florida 6A All-State 1st Team member.

BRANDON JOHNSON-FARRELL

Wide Receivers First Season at VSU Rhode Island, ‘13 Human Development

Brandon Johnson-Farrell joined VSU in January, 2022, as wide receivers coach after six seasons at the University of Sioux Falls as special teams coordinator and USF’s NFL liaison. During his time at USF, the Cougars qualified for the playoffs three times and his receiving groups have been among the best in the NSIC. A year ago, he had two receivers to rank in the league’s top 10 in catches or yardage. In 2018, Michael Maxwell and Nate Johnson (2018, 2019) were named All-NSIC performers under Johnson-Farrell’s guidance.

A native of Odenton, Md., Johnson-Farrell was a coach on the 2016 NSIC champions team, in which he mentored receivers including all-league performers Josh Angulo, Brady Rose and Kyle Groeneweg. The Cougars won the NSIC with a perfect 11-0 league mark and finished 12-1 with a berth in the NCAA DII “Sweet 16” while earning a No. 8 ranking in the final AFCA Poll.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Human Development in 2012 from the University of Rhode Island. There, he started 11 games as a senior at wide receiver, accumulating 44 catches and 567 receiving yards with four TDs. He also totaled 27 kickoff returns for 653 yards and 12 punt returns for 91 yards. He became the sixth player in school history to reach 4,000 all-purpose yards and moved into fourth place on the school’s all-time receiving list with 162 catches. He was a 2012 all-conference selection at wide receiver and also a 2012 First Team All-new England performer. He had 400 receiving yards as a junior. As a freshman, he caught at least one pass in every game and led the Rams with 1,478 all-purpose yards, in which he ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). During his freshman season, he was chosen as the CAA Football Rookie-of-the-Week. At the end of the season, he was selected CAA Football Third Team All-Conference.

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Sioux Falls in 2016.

MIKE BARELA

Offensive Line First Season at Valdosta State

Mike Barela joins Valdosta State University in 2022 coaching the Offensive Line. He is a 26-year veteran of coaching with prior stops at Colorado Mesa University, University of the Incarnate Word, Northeastern State (Ok), Southwest Baptist, Texas State University, University of North Texas, Sam Houston State University, and Morningside College.

At Colorado Mesa in 2020 under first year Head Coach Tremaine Jackson, Barela took over the duties of coaching the offensive line after originally coaching the Tight Ends.

In 2021, he added the Co-Offensive Coordinator title and helped CMU to an 8-2 record and rank 19th in Division II in total offense (452.3 ypg). In addition, CMU led the RMAC in total offense and rushing offense (194.8 ypg / 5.2 yds per attempt / 24 TDs), finished second in passing offense (257.5 ypg), and third in scoring offense (33.7 pts per game).

During the pandemic shortened 2020 season, the CMU run game averaged 241.7 yds per game in the 3 games played (5.1 yds per attempt).

The 2019 season saw the CMU tight ends combine for 30 receptions and 419 yards with 3 TDs. This included RMAC All-Conference TE selection sophomore Dagan Rienks production of 23 catches, 306 yards, 3 TDs. Barela also coordinated the kick-off return unit. CMU finished the regular season ranked 3rd nationally in Division II kick-off returns averaging 26.95 per return. Freshman Justin White finished #1 nationally in D2 kick-off returns averaging 38.1 yards (15 returns for 571 yds / 1 TD).

In 2018, he inherited an experienced group of tight ends that helped an offense to rank nationally in total offense (485.2 yds), passing offense (275.4 yds, 21 TDs), and rushing offense (209.8 yds, 26 TDs). He also mentored TE Tanner Quick to RMAC All-Conference honors.

He spent 2015-2017 at the University of Incarnate Word coaching the tight ends in 2015 and 2017.

In 2016 he spent one year tutoring the team’s nickelbacks on UIW’s nationally ranked defense. Coaching the tight ends in 2015, the Cardinals finished 6-5 in just their second year as a NCAA FCS and Southland Conference member. Barela helped to develop 1st Team All-Conference TE Cole Wick (30 receptions, 364 yds/2 TDs). Wick would eventually sign with the NFL Detroit Lions. He returned to coaching the tight ends in 2017 and added the title of Run Game Coordinator. In 2017, the tight ends combined for 36 catches for 321 yards and 7 TD’s. Also, he coordinated the kick-off return unit for the Cardinal special teams in 2017. The kick-off return unit featured a kick returner who led D-1 FCS with 3 TD’s on 23 returns in 8 games averaging 29.78 yards per return.

From 2012-13, he served as offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at NCAA D-II Northeastern State (OK). In his final season at NSU, Barela was named a finalist for the 2013 AFCA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year.

In 2013, returning two starters to the offensive line, and despite injuries to key personnel; the offense was able to average 157.5 rushing yards per game with 17 rushing TD’s. Barela tutored three MIAA all-conference offensive linemen and a 2013 Capital One Division II Academic All-American (Ross Dvorak).

The 2012 season was Northeastern State’s first in the MIAA, and Barela helped mold an offensive line that featured five new starters. He helped produce a 1,000-yard rusher (NSU’s first since 2003), two MIAA all-conference offensive linemen, and an All-American (Michael Bowie – a 7th round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks). The offensive line allowed 11 sacks in 338 pass attempts for the entire year. During Barela’s tenure, NSU rushed for 3,490 yds and scored 34 TDs on the ground.

In 2011, his lone season at Southwest Baptist, Barela helped the Bearcats to their third consecutive winning season. The offensive line helped SBU’s spread offense average 154.8 rushing yards per game with 20 rushing TD’s.

From 2007-10, Barela served as the tight ends coach at Texas State University. During his tenure at Texas State, he was part of a staff that helped establish numerous school records, including a conference championship (2008). In 2009, the offense ranked #7 nationally in passing (289 ypg) and 12th in scoring offense (32 points per game). 2008 saw the offense finish #7 nationally in scoring (36 points per game), and #8 in total offense (453.2 ypg). In addition, Tight End John Gilley earned All-Southland Conference honors. In 2007 for the first time in school history, the offense produced a 1,000 yd rusher, 1,000 yd receiver, and 2,000 yd passer in the same year.

From 2002-06, Barela served as the Director of Football Operations at North Texas. While a member of Darrell Dickey’s Mean Green staff, Barela was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the football program. UNT won three straight Sun Belt Conference Championships during Barela’s five seasons.

In 2000 and ‘01, Barela coached the tight ends for Coach Ron Randleman at Sam Houston State. Barela coached First-Team All-America tight end Keith Heinrich during his two seasons at Sam Houston State. Heinrich would go on to be the sixth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2002 NFL Draft. During his two seasons with Sam Houston State, the Bearkats had a combined 17-7 record including a 10-3 record in 2001 with a shared Southland Conference championship.

Barela’s coaching experience also includes time at then NCAA D-II Morningside College (1999) where he was the offensive line coach. He helped produce two North Central all-conference offensive linemen.

He was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater North Texas from 1996-98, working with the offensive line and tight ends after he completed his career at North Texas playing linebacker and special teams.

Barela is married to wife Lauren and are the proud parents of sons Reece (9) and Hudson (7).

JACKSON HADLEY

Tight Ends & Recruiting Coordinator First Season at Valdosta State Tennessee '19 Sport Managment

Jackson Hadley begins his first year as tight ends and recruiting coordinator for the Blazers. He came to Titletown from Colorado Mesa with new Blazer head football coach Tremaine Jackson for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. There, he coached the tight ends, along with the slot receivers and was the recruiting coordinator for the Mavericks.

Hadley spent the 2019 season under former Blazer Hall of Famer Chris Hatcher as an offensive analyst and quarterback assistant.

He enrolled at Tennessee where he graduated in 2019 after serving as a student-assistant under former Volunteer head coaches Butch Jones and Jeremy Pruitt. He was a member of the personnel/recruiting department and offensive student coach.

Hadley, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., graduated from Clarksville High School in 2015.

ROB MCELHANEY

Asst. Defensive Line/Special Teams Second Season at VSU Slippery Rock '20 Interdisciplinary Studies

Rob McElhaney begins his second year at Valdosta State and first as Assistant Defensive Line Coach/ Special Teams. McElhaney was Offensive and Special Teams assistant in 2021 as he helped lead VSU to a 12-2 record overall, the program’s third-straight Gulf South Conference title and a national runner-up finish.

Prior to Valdosta State, McElhaney was the Defensive Line Coach/Academic Coordinator at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. There he led the team to break the team honor roll with 49 players (50.5% of active roster) with over a 3.0 GPA. Before Saint Vincent, McElhaney was a student assistant at Slippery Rock from 2016-2019, prior to becoing the head student assistant at SRU from 2019-2020. He was an offensive line assistant, film coordinator and offensive quality control coordinator.

McElhaney, an Aliquippa, Pa., native, helped coach SRU to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Confenrece title and two appearances in the NCAA playoffs, including one semifinal appearance. McElhaney was on staff when former Blazer Rolan Rivers won the Harlon Hill Award.

JEREMY KING

Running Backs Second Season at Valdosta State Valdosta State '19 Psychology

In his second season with the Blazers, King moves to coach the running backs after serving as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line in 2021. King graduated from VSU in 2019 with a degree in psychology. He was a standout offensive lineman for the Blazers for four years from 2015-2018, helping lead VSU to the program’s fourth national title in 2018.

King had a standout senior campaign in 2018 as he was a finalist for the prestigious Gene Upshaw Award which goes to the top lineman in all of NCAA Division II each season.

King started all 14 games in 2018 on the offensive line and earned First Team All-Gulf South Conference honors. For his career, he had over 45 starts on the offensive line. He had over 140 knockdowns for his career and graded out at over 92 percent. King was a three-time team captain and only allowed two sacks in his career.

In 2018, King blocked for Harlon Hill runner-up and NCAA Division II National Championship Game Most Valuable Player, Rogan Wells, as VSU set numerous school records and led the nation in a number of offensive categories.

Assistant Quarterbacks First Season at Valdosta State

Temple '16 Sports & Recreation Managment

Matt Giampa begins his first year at Valdosta State and came to Titletown from Alvernia College where he coached since 2018. While at Alverina, he served as offensive line coach and tight end coach in 2019, while his players led the Middle Atlantic Conference in rushing yards per game and running back Malcolm Carey earned first team all-conference honors for the second-straight season.

Giampa joined Alvernia in 2018 and that fall was the first season of football in program history as the special teams and running back coach. Giampa’s squads finished in the top four in the conference in net punting, kickoff return yards allowed and punt return average.

Prior to joining Alvernia University, Giampa was a member of the Villanova University coaching staff, where he served as the Special teams quality control coach and defensive assistant. Giampa was a large part of Villanova’s top rated defense. The Villanova Special Teams finished top three in the conference with all conference selections at Punter and returner.

Giampa is a 2016 graduate of Temple University, where he received a degree in Sport and Recreation Management and served as a Student coaching assistant for Temple University Football. In addition, Giampa received his Master’s in Business Administration from Alvernia University in 2019.

JACK LOUISDORT

Assistant Defensive Backs First Season at Valdosta State Regina '21 Physical Education

Jack Louisdort came to Valdosta State in 2022 as the assistant defensive backs coach, after working the 2021 season at Augustana (S.D.) as the defensive backs graduate assistant, where he assisted in the development of two first-team all-conference defensive backs Peyton Buckley and Eli Webber. Louisdort also assisted Vikings in winning their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship in over 60 years and a second consecutive playoff appearance.

Previous to Augustana, Louisdort was the defensive backs coach at Miller Comprehensive High School and the Saskatchewan Selects in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The Florida native played his high school football at several schools in the state and played his college football in Canada at the University of Regina, in Saskatchewan, Canada. Louisdort graduated from Regina in 2021, with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

RYNE STRICKLAND

Assistant Offensive Line First Season at Valdosta State Georgia Southwestern '17 Education

Ryne Strickland begins his first season at Valdosta State as assistant offensive line coach. Prior to Valdosta State, Strickland spent five successful seasons in the high school ranks in Georgia and Alabama. For the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Strickland coached the offensive line at Central-Phenix City in Phenix City, Alabama, posting a record of 21-6 over two seasons. While there, he had three offensive linemen sign to play football at the next level. Strickland helped guide his team to a 6A state runner-up finish in 2021 and a region 2-6A title as the team averaged 236 rushing yards per game and allowed just five sacks. In 2020, the team finished in the 6A state semifinals, averaging 237 yards on the ground per game.

Strickland spent the 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons in various roles at Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia, helping lead the Trojans to a 40-3 record over during that span, including back to back 6A State Championships in 2017 and 2018, and three-straight region 1-6A championships. In three seasons at Lee County, he helped develop five offensive linemen to sign NCAA Division I football scholarships. In 2019, Strickland was responsible for coaching TE’s/H-Backs, leading to both players being named to the 1-6A all-region team on the way to the 6A state quarterfinals as the team averaged 143 rushing yards per game. In 2018, he served as offensive line coach/run game coordinator on the way to a perfect 15-0 season, the 6A State Championship, and all five starting offensive linemen earning region 1-6A all-region honors. The 2017 season saw him serve as assistant offensive line coach, primarily working with the tackles/tight ends during a 14-1 campaign. The team won the 6A State Championship (first in school history), while averaging 123 yards on the ground per game.

Strickland graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Georgia Southwestern State University in 2017, and obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Valdosta State in 2020.

He is married to Dr. Shelby Hooks.

BLAKE POTASH

Assistant Linebackers First Season at Valdosta State Roosevelt '16 Accounting

Blake Potash begins his first season as assistant linebackers coach. Prior to Valdosta State, Potash spent two seasons at defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Black Hills State (S.D.). There, the team played two games in 2020 and 11 in 2021.

Prior to BHSU, Potash was the Senior Defensive Analyst and Director of Analytics at Abilene Christian University from 2018-19. There, the ACU defense finished the 2019 season ranked top-20 in the FCS in three major defensive categories: fumbles recovered (fourth), sacks (10th) and tackles for loss (11th).

In 2018, they finished ranked top-20 in the FCS in four major defensive categories: fourth down percentage (sixth), sacks (seventh), rush defense (14th) and third down percentage (14th). The ACU defense also led the Southland Conference in red zone touchdown percentage. Potash coached with current VSU head coach Tremaine Jackson at ACU in 2017 and 2018.

Potash was the Linebackers Assistant at ACU from 2016-17, before being promoted and helped improve the defense over that time in scoring defense (8.7 ppg), rush defense (11 ypg) and pass defense (82 ypg). Prior to ACU, Potash worked as a Varsity Assistant and JV Defensive Coordinator at Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove, Ill. He graduated from Roosevelt University (Ill.) in 2016 with a B.S. in accounting.

JAY JOHNSON

Head Athletic Trainer Sixth Season at Valdosta State Valdosta State '05 Sports Medicine/Athletic Training

The Valdosta State Athletic Training program is held in high regard within the profession of athletic training, and that reputation carries on under the leadership of Jay Johnson, who was announced as Blazer Athletics' newest Head Athletic Trainer during the summer of 2017.

Having served as a Head Athletic Trainer at Georgia Southwestern for four years before taking over the head position at Florida Tech in 2011, Johnson brings over 10 years of experience in the position to Valdosta State. His roots run deep at VSU, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training under the tutelage of former Head Athletic Trainer Russ Hoff, whom Johnson refers to as a mentor.

Following his graduation from VSU, Johnson achieved a Masters degree in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Health Promotion at Georgia College and State University, which led to the start of his professional career at Georgia Southwestern. While at Florida Tech, Johnson brought tremendous growth to the program. He oversaw the growth of the institution's expansion from three to six full-time athletic trainers and helped to develop a community among athletic trainers throughout the Space Coast region.

During his career, Johnson has served as a member of both the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association and the Athletic Training Association of Florida, as well also being a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association since 2005. He is currently one of the Southwest Region Representatives for the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association.

He currently is the Chair of the Gulf South Conference Athletic Training Committee.

LONNIE MADDOX

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Third Season at Valdosta State Troy '08 Sport & Fitness Management

Valdosta State Director of Athletics, Herb Reinhard announced June 29, 2020, the hiring of Lonnie Maddox as the Blazers’ new Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.

In his first season at VSU, Maddox led strength and conditioning efforts for men’s basketball, softball and men’s tennis, who all won Gulf South Conference titles and each participated in the NCAA postseason. Last season, he handled strength aond conditioning efforts fo the Blazer football team, who qualified for the national championship game for the second time in three years. He also is a registered strength and conditioning coach through the National Strength an Conditioning Coaches Association.

“My family and I are beyond excited and honored to join the Blazer family as the new Head Strength and Conditioning Coach,” Maddox said.  “This is family with a winning tradition, and I can’t wait to be a part and help develop the studentathletes to compete at the highest level possible.”

Maddox came to Titletown from NCAA Division I Alcorn State, where he has served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach since February, 2017.  While working with the Braves, Maddox helped the football program achieve back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championships and a pair of appearances in the Celebration Bowl in 2018 and 2019.  In conference play, the Braves went 19-4 with Maddox as the strength and conditioning coach in three seasons.

“I’m excited about Lonnie joining our Blazer team,” Reinhard said. “He is passionate about helping our studentathletes reach their athletic potential and supporting them in their academic endeavors as well. Alcorn State has had considerable success during Lonnie’s tenure there. Our strength and conditioning program is an important part of our success and I know Lonnie will continue that.”

Maddox also worked closely with Sterling Shippy from the football program who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019.

Maddox came to Alcorn State after spending the 2016 season at the University of South Carolina where he was an intern strength coach.  He also served as an assistant strength coach for a year-and-a-half at NCAA Division I Troy University.

He graduated from Troy in 2008, earning a bachelor of science degree in sport and fitness management.  Maddox then earned his master’s degree in exercise science from Auburn Montgomery in December, 2015.

Maddox is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the NSCA, and a Level I sports performance coach with the USAW weightlifting.

He is married to his wife Jessica and they have one son Alik.

Valdosta State's home football field for 37 of the Blazers' 40 playing years, Cleveland Field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium offers Valdosta State with a football facility conve niently located adjacent to VSU's main cam pus.

The original stadium was constructed in 1922 and was named for the late Dr. A.G. Cleveland, who was superintendent of Val dosta City Schools from 1919 through 1949. In the spring of 1996, two legendary coaches from the Valdosta area were honored when the complex was named after the late Wright Bazemore and Nick Hyder.

The original stadium was leveled following the 2003 season and rebuilt from the ground up, providing the Blazers with a state-ofthe-art facility for its home games. The seat ing capacity of the stadium rose to 10,100 including three prime sections featuring theater-style seating with the ramainder of the stands featuring benches with seat backs. New SprintTurf was installed on the playing surface while locker rooms were added to each end of the stadium and a new press box was built above the main stands on the home side of the field.

Valdosta State played its first seven seasons at Cleveland Field, tallying a 24-14 record, before returning to the stadium prior to the 1992 season. The Blazers have been dominant since returning to the stadium as they have gone 166-49-1 over the 36 playing years there. Since 2000, the Blazers have gone 10924 at home for a blistering .830 winning percentage.

In 2018, VSU went a perfect 8-0 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium for its eighth undfeated season at home in program history. The eight home wins in 2018 were the most since recording a school-record nine home victories in 2002. In addition, the eight wins tied the record with the 1994 team for second all-time in a season. VSU is 17-7 all-time in the NCAA Playoffs at home.

Following the 2020 season being cancelled due to the CO VID-19 Pandemic, 2021 saw the Blazers record their ninth un defeated season at home, going 9-0 for the second time in pro gram history (2002).

THE ATHLETIC FIELD HOUSE

The home to the Valdosta State football and women's soccer pro grams is the Valdosta State Athletic Fieldhouse. The 41,000 square foot Fieldhouse opened in January 2009 at a cost of $5.8 million, giving the Blazer program one of the top athletic facilities in the nation.

Beyond football and soccer, the fieldhouse also houses the 7,690 square foot Jessie Tuggle Weight Room and a 2,437 square foot stateof-the-art Athletic Training Room that is used by all VSU teams.

The Tuggle Weight Room, which encases nearly 10 times the space of its predecessor, is one of, if not the top, weight facilities among NCAA Division II schools nationwide. It featJessie Tuggle Weight Room ures 10 brand new eight-post stations as well as a reinforced medicine ball wall. New self-contained dumbbell stations were also added to the area while a 30-yard speed track was included in the design of the floor. The Jesse Tuggle Weight Room also features elliptical machines and two stationary bikes for cardio workouts and a built-in microphone/stereo system to aid the strength and conditioning staff while working with large groups of VSU athletes. Additionally, each of the 10 eight-post sta tions has also been pre-wired for video recording, which will be added in the near future, for further evaluation and instruction by the strength and conditioning staff. The newest addition to the facility are two Cog nisens "caves," which allow for an increased mental training to provide Blazer athletes with an additional edge in competition. Valdosta State is the only university on any level in the nation to own the Cognisens ma chines, with additional owners including Manchester United and multiple NHL hockey teams.

Next door to the Tuggle Weight Room is the Athletic Training Room. The area includes offices for the Valdosta State Athletic Training staff and a private physician exam room as well as a hydrotherapy room for rehabilitation work. The main Athletic Training area features six taping stations as well as six additional treatment areas plus a cardiovascular/ rehabilitation area featuring stationary bikes.

Additionally, outside of the facility are two lighted football practice fields and a soccer stadium.

The Athletic Fieldhouse features many amenities that will aid the foot ball team as it endures the rigors of a football season. A 3,265 square foot locker room is the centerpiece of the project and is lined with 126 lockers, enough to house all members of the VSU football squad. Ad jacent to the locker room is a 2,100 square foot equipment room with secure “Football Locker Roompass-through” equipment bins that allow managers to address the equipment needs of all the Blazers while keep

ing each player’s equipment separated.

The remainder of the Athletic Fieldhouse includes a 3,458 square foot office suite for the football coaches as well as 2,200 square feet of meeting rooms, each equipped with state-of-the-art video equip ment. The academic needs of the student-athlete is also addressed as a 1,500 square foot computer lab is equipped with 19 computers.

the blazin’ brigade

Established in 1983, the Blazin’ Brigade Marching Band is one of the largest student organizations and one of the deepest held traditions at Valdosta State University. Blazin’ Brigade members represent nearly every major on campus. Membership is open to all students regardless of major. For 39 years, Blazin’ Brigade has provided en tertaining shows for students, fans, and alumni at home in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and across South Georgia.

A blistering running attack from Jada Byers proved to be too much as Virginia Union posted a 45-40 upset victory over the Blazers as each team won on the opponents home field in the twogameseriesin2021and2022. Byersrushedfor319yards settinganewBazemore-HyderStadiumrecord.

After a slow start with a 7-0 lead through the first quarter, the Blazers exploded for a 55-7 victory in the first meeting between thetwoteams. VSU battled back from a dismal first half and 17-3 deficit for a 34-30victoryatShorterSaturday.TheBlazersoutscoredSU3113 in the final two quarters, including 21-6 in the third quarter. Senior Seth McGill finished with 144 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. TheBlazershadjust12yardsofoffenseinthefirst quarterandfinishedwith413yardsforthegame.

CLINTON, Miss. – The No. 2 Valdosta State football team posted a 41-14 victory at Mississippi College Saturday afternoon. The Blazers improved to 7-0 on the year and a 4-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College fell to 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in GSC play.

VSU finished the game with 339 yards on the ground with junior Seth McGill recording two rushing scores and over 100 yards on the ground, while junior quarterback Ivory Durham also had a rushing score and redshirt freshman Isaiah Flowers also hit pay dirt on the ground. Soph omore kicker Estin Thiele went 2 for 3 in field goals for the game and had eight kickoffs for a 64.1 average in the game as MC had just one kick return for 21 yards. The Blazers were 10 of 19 for 107 yards pass ing as Durham was 9 of 18 passing for 97 yards, while freshman Sam Edwards was for 1 for ten yards. Neither team punted in the game.

McGill had 14 rushes for 102 yards and two touchdowns, while Thompkins had nine rushes for 74 yards and a score. Durham had seven touches for 55 yards and a score. Reigning GSC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, graduate student Brian Saunds, had three catches for 70 yards.

VSU recorded 23 first downs and the Blazer “D” stood strong as it turned MC over on downs three times and the Choctaws missed their first attempted field goal of the season. Blazer defensive back junior Taurus Dotson had his second interception of the season on the second pass attempted by MC.

The Blazers outgained MC 446-342 as the Choctaws had 342 yards on the ground on 53 attempts. MC didn’t complete a pass in the game as it was 0 of 7 with an interception for no yards. Defensively, the Blaz ers were led by ten tackles each from sophomore Jaylen Jackson and junior Julian Baldi, while junior Jackson Bull had seven tackles with two tackles for loss and one of two sacks for the defense.

Academic excellence and a leadership role in NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. Entering its 51st year, the GSC is a charter Division II member that prides itself as one of the first conferences to be created and administered by its CEOs. We take pride in our 50-plus National Team Championships in 13 sports, one individual men’s cross country champion, five men’s golf individual champions, and one track and field champion, as well as more than 150 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes graduate at a much higher rate than the general student body. The conference saw all 13 full-time institutions either earn a conference title or advance to NCAA Championship action in 2021-22. The GSC sponsors 19 sports, including 18 championship events. Official sponsored sports include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. Prior to the 2020-21 academic year, the conference officially added women's lacrosse after three seasons as an emerging sport. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss athletics and when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin (UTM) and Troy State (TSU) were the charter mem bers, but scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the conference to only football. Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (NSU) joined in 1971 and the league opened an office in Hammond, La., changed its name to the Gulf South Conference, and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College (MC) and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NWLA left for Division I, followed by SELA and NSU in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State and West Georgia (1983). In 1991, UTM and TSU went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, but an aggressive expansion resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (MUW, 1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and ArkansasMonticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. MC dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Hard ing University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA-playing conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athlet ics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference following the 2006-07 year. Montevallo’s departure for the Peach Belt Conference dropped the number to 14 in 2009-10. North Alabama completed its final year with the GSC in 2017-18, as the Lions accepted an invitation to go Division I and join the Atlantic Sun Conference.

The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The league implemented a five-year expansion plan in 2012 resulting in the addition of new members Shorter University (2014-15), Union University (2014-15), Lee University (2015-16) and Auburn University at Montgomery (2019-20) along with the return of Mississippi College (2016-17) and Montevallo (2017-18). Auburn Montgomery became a provisional member in 2017-18 as they advanced through the NCAA membership process. The Warhawks are on track to be a full member, eligible for all awards and postseason opportunities, in 2019-20. The conference also adopted affiliate memberships to boost its ranks, resulting in sport-specific members, Fla gler (women’s lacrosse), North Greenville (football), Spring Hill College (men’s and women’s soccer and women’s golf), and Young Harris College (women’s lacrosse).
