A XIS DAN C E STU DIO Studio VI, Spring 2017 Professor Alberto Cabre Fellsway Bridge Area Somerville, MA 02145 This studio challenged us to design a dance studio for AXIS dance company, a team that consists of able-bodied and disabled dancers. We were allowed to choose one out of four sites in the Fellsway bridge area, a site that is prone to flooding. In teams of two we were tasked to design a project with an integrative approach to building materials and systems - structural, environmental, enclosure - while preserving our design concept. My partner and I were interested in creating a building form that mimicked the way that the dancers collaborated with each other. Specifically we looked at how the rigidity of the disabled dancers blended with the flexibility of the able-bodied dancers. This idea is most obviously seen in our roof system that is supported by a rigid truss system.

M U SEUM OF SENSORY EXPERIE N C E Studio V, Fall 2016 Professor Troy Peters 90 Smith Street Boston, MA 02120 This studio sought to engage us with the act of making. From the very beginning we were challenged to test out sensory experiences through physical and digital modeling. In the end we would create a design that engaged the physical, environmental, and cultural characteristics of the site. The site was the abandoned Saint Alphonsus Hall and nearby convent in Mission Hill, a residential area in Boston. The goal was to analyze our sensory experiences of the site and make a museum for the community to use. My design acknowledged the walkable nature of the area and chose to mimic it by connecting the two buildings through a pedestrian sensory bridge. This bridge would have openings of different sizes to allow light, air and noise into the space. Furthermore the bridge had ‘pods’ that were meant to act as a cleansing space from the previous sensory experience. The interior of the buildings also followed a circulation path that connected to the bridge with sensory experience spaces along the way.

HOLYOK E C ENTER DESIGN IN T ERV EN T ION Studio I, Fall 2014 Professor Krists Karklins 75 Mt. Auburn Street Cambridge, MA 02138 This first studio class acted as a foundation for the essential skills that are necessary in developing analysis and design skills. We began by learning how to analyze urban landscapes through freehand sketching. From there we learned the basics of orthographic drawing skills. With these skills we began applying design exercises to a site. The Holyoke center, a part of Harvard University’s health services, was chosen to design a public intervention that created a place of contemplation. Design begins with with a series of questions about your own perceptions, so each design reflected the person that created it. Personally, contemplation meant finding a space in nature to reflect on one’s own thoughts and feelings. My design looked to capture this idea by removing visitors from the city around them. The further they move through the intervention the less they see and hear from the surrounding area. Along the way their are places to stop and reflect. The top most space of the intervention contradicts this contemplation by opening up to the city. It is here that visitors fully grasp the space they walked through by comparing its contemplative nature with that of the rest of the city.

The intervention meets the sky at a point created by the steel poles and concrete roof. This symbolizes walking through a ‘gate’ which leads to the top most open space. This open space provides visitors with a complete view of the surrounding area.

This intervention consists of corten steel pipes that are arranged vertically between horizontal concrete surfaces. The stairs circulate around a central open space with balconies at certain points for visitors to look at the interior of the intervention. Furthermore the poles have a dual purpose. The first is to act as the support for the circulation path. The second is to act a limiting factor in the view to the outside while also letting in filtered light.

The intervention touches the ground which is made of brick. Though the material is not the same, the color of the corten steel is similar to the brick to create a relationship between the site and the intervention. The entrances almost appear hidden beacuse of the layers of the steel pipes which causes visitors to be surprised upon finding the entrance.

P HYS ICAL MODELS This section showcases the many physical models that I have completed in school. These range from precedent studies to design models. Many of these models look to identify key features of the project and highlight them for others to see.
