VOORWOORD

Nu Sinterklaas het land uit is en iedereen zo goed als klaar is voor de komende kerstdagen betekent dit ook dat het jaar 2013 er al bijna weer op zit. Deze periode van het jaar is altijd de tijd van de lijstjes. Of het nou de Top 2000, de politicus van het jaar of de beste sportploeg is, er wordt altijd teruggeblikt op de afgelopen periode. Als we het afgelopen VSAE jaar bekijken kunnen we wat mij betreft alleen maar tevreden en blij zijn. De projecten zijn over het algemeen prima verlopen, de borrels zijn drukker bezocht dan ooit en leden genieten wederom ontzettend van alle activiteiten. Daarnaast zijn er ook stappen gemaakt op het gebied van professionaliteit en documentatie. Dingen die voor de gemiddelde VSAE’er uiteraard wat minder merkbaar zijn, maar zeker niet minder belangrijk. Ik moet dan ook zeggen dat ik met een zekere mate van trots terugkijk op het jaar 2013.

Na de positieve reacties op Aenorm 80, waarbij zowel layout als inhoud flink op de schop waren gegaan, zijn we onverminderd hard door blijven werken om ook deze editie weer tot een succes te maken. Met uitbreiding van de redactie en nieuwe ideeën zijn er zeker weer mooie stappen gemaakt.

In deze editie kan je onder andere lezen hoe Nienke Visser haar uitwisseling in Budapest heeft ervaren en wat 26 VSAE’ers in Madrid hebben gedaan tijdens ons International Study Project. Verder hebben we het bijzondere verhaal van Pim Klaver, hij onderbrak zijn studie econometrie om in Spanje op hoog niveau te gaan wielrennen. Inmiddels is hij terug en wij spraken met hem. Uiteraard is ook de puzzel het noemen waard, deze is namelijk speciaal ontworpen voor studenten AEO. Om het winterse gevoel van momenteel te versterken hebben we een wetenschappelijk artikel over wintersport in Frankrijk. Uiteraard komen ook andere econometrische artikelen aan bod, dit keer geschreven door docent Boswijk en alumnus Timo van der Veen. Ga dus gezellig onder de kerstboom zitten, pak er een kop thee en een kerstkransje bij en geniet de komende uren van al deze content!

Last, but not least nog een persoonlijke noot. Na een geweldig bestuursjaar is het voor mij tijd om in februari weer te gaan studeren.

Dat betekent automatisch dat dit mijn laatste Aenormvoorwoord is als voorzitter van de VSAE. Iets dat ik ontzettend jammer vind, maar het is tijd om het stokje door te geven. Ik wil mijn opvolgers dan ook het allerbeste toewensen. Het was me absoluut een eer en waar genoegen, bedankt!

Kijken in een glazen bol DOOR: RUTH VAN DE BELT Wanneer gaat de economie weer echt groeien?

Op welk moment zien we dit terug in dalende werkloosheidcijfers? En wanneer trekken de huizenprijzen weer aan? Dit is slechts een greep uit de vragen die ik met enige regelmaat op mij afgevuurd krijg. Bij de beantwoording van deze vragen maak ik, evenals veel andere economen, gebruik van macroeconomische modellen. Deze modellen zijn doorgaans gekalibreerd op economische tijdreeksen die teruggaan tot het begin van de jaren zeventig. Het grootste deel van de periode betreft daarmee de Great Moderation oftewel een uitzonderlijk lange periode van macroeconomische stabiliteit.

de structurele tegenwind die ons te wachten staat.

De arbeidsproductiviteit groeit steeds langzamer door gebrek aan een nieuwe doorbraaktechnologie, de beroepsbevolking neemt af door vergrijzing en ontgroening, het opleidingsniveau stijgt nauwelijks meer en grondstoffen worden steeds schaarser en duurder. In de komende jaren is het groeipotentieel van de Nederlandse economie dan ook beperkter dan uit macro-economische modellen blijkt.

Op dit moment is onze maatschappij echter onvoldoende ingericht op een scenario van weinig economische groei. Consumenten hebben in het verleden financiële beslissingen gemaakt, waarbij ze er vanuit zijn gegaan dat hun inkomen in de loop der tijd zou toenemen. Bedrijven hebben hogere omzetten en winsten nodig om hun aandeelhouders tevreden te stellen. En de overheid is voor haar inkomsten sterk afhankelijk van economische groei, terwijl de uitgaven vooral worden beïnvloed door demografische ontwikkelingen. Ik ben van mening dat het de hoogste tijd is voor een omslag in ons denken en handelen.

Een terugkeer naar een ‘normaal’ groeipad, waarvan in veel macro-economische modellen vanuit wordt gegaan, is niet vanzelfsprekend. In de aanloop naar 2008 hebben we een groot deel van onze economische groei met geleend geld gefinancierd. Na een dergelijke periode vindt er balansherstel plaats. Overheden, bedrijven en consumenten moeten hun schulden aflossen en dit gaat ten koste van consumptieve uitgaven en investeringen en daarmee van de economische groei.

Dit zien we echter niet terug in de macro-economische modellen, aangezien financiële markten hier vaak niet in zijn ingebouwd. Bovendien houden de macroeconomische modellen onvoldoende rekening met

Door de stabiele macro-economische omgeving konden toekomstige ontwikkelingen gedurende een lange periode relatief goed worden voorspeld. Met het uitbreken van de financiële crisis in 2008 kwam hier echter abrupt een einde aan. Vandaag de dag ziet de wereld er totaal anders uit dan vijf jaar geleden. Een aantal geschatte relaties in de macro-economische modellen doet niet langer opgeld. Door de aard van de huidige economische situatie, kunnen lijntjes niet meer in dezelfde mate en op dezelfde manier worden doorgetrokken naar de toekomst als voorheen. Toch is dit precies wat er nu nog steeds gebeurt. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat voorspelling na voorspelling naar beneden moet worden bijgesteld, of die nu van het Nederlandse CPB komt, of van internationale organisaties zoals het IMF en de OESO.

Transparantie binnen de Actuariaatcongrescommissie

Wat is het thema van het Actuariaatcongres 2014?

Hoe gaat het met de voorbereidingen?

Karlijn: Het gaat over transparantie, dit gaan we vanuit meerdere kanten belichten. In het verleden is bijvoorbeeld de woekerpolisaffaire geweest, hierdoor is er bij consumenten minder vertrouwen in (voornamelijk) verzekeraars. Er zijn ook alternatieven gekomen zoals banksparen, daarom laten we ook iemand spreken over banksparen vergeleken met verzekeren.

Nuria: We behandelen het thema dus vanuit de consumentenkant, vanuit de verzekeraar, maar ook vanuit de pensioenkant. Op deze manier willen we het voor zoveel mogelijk mensen interessant houden.

Allen: Goed!

Karlijn: De locatie die we hebben is super, we houden het congres namelijk in EYE! We hebben zoals gezegd ook leuke sprekers, en we hebben eigenlijk alle sprekers wel geregeld.

Wouter: De sponsoring gaat ook goed, Hugo en ik zijn daar inmiddels een tijd mee bezig en het gaat prima.

Irene: Ik ben samen met Karlijn alvast bezig met het designen van het magazine, dat wordt nog een aardige uitdaging…

Nousjka: De sprekers zijn zoals Karlijn zei bijna allemaal geregeld, en we hebben ook een leuke dagvoorzitter. We zijn nu bezig met het afnemen van interviews bij een aantal sprekers en de dagvoorzitter, zodat we die interviews in het magazine kunnen zetten.

Waarom moeten wij naar het Actuariaatcongres komen?

Hugo: We hebben leuke sprekers, zoals bijvoorbeeld Antoinette Hertsenberg. Zij is toch een bekend persoon, en heeft de term “Woekerpolis” ooit bedacht.

Nuria: Het thema heeft een maatschappelijk belang, daarom is het interessant. Je kunt ook zien waar actuarissen zich in de praktijk mee bezig houden, dat is handig voor je oriëntatie op het gebied van actuariaat.

Waarom zijn jullie in deze commissie gegaan?

Wouter: Vooral om ervan te leren, het is een serieuzere commissie dan die ik hiervoor deed (wintersport). Ik ben verantwoordelijk voor acquisitie, en dat vind ik een leuke uitdaging. Hiernaast leer je er ook van hoe de bedrijvenwereld in elkaar zit.

COMMISSIE UITGELICHT

Komend jaar wordt het Actuariaatcongres voor de veertiende keer georganiseerd. Het congres is inmiddels al jarenlang dé plek voor studenten om in aanraking te komen met actuariaat, en voor mensen uit het bedrijfsleven om hun kennis bij te houden over actuele thema’s binnen actuariaat.

Elk jaar is er een overkoepelend thema, dat samen met Jeroen Breen (directeur van het Actuarieel Genootschap) bepaald wordt. De dag bestaat voor een deel uit plenaire sessies (voor de hele zaal) en verder uit interactieve sessies waar je je kan inschrijven voor een bepaald onderwerp.

De commissie bestaat uit Nuria Boot (voorzitter), Marc van Houdt (coördinator), Nousjka de Lange, Irene Doelman, Wouter Kastrop, Karlijn Schipper en Hugo Evers. Sinds mei is deze commissie hard aan de slag om het congres weer tot een succes te maken!

Wat is jullie doel met het congres?

Irene: Het leek me heel leuk om een congres te organiseren, vooral omdat het voor zowel studenten als mensen uit het bedrijfsleven is. Na de andere commissies die ik heb gedaan buiten de VSAE heb ik besloten om nu een studiegerelateerde commissie te gaan doen.

Hugo: Ik had nog niet eerder een commissie gedaan bij de VSAE, en dit vond ik een goed begin. Ik vind het ook erg leuk om met een commissie samen naar iets toe te werken.

Karlijn: Voor deze commissie had ik al een aantal andere commissies bij de VSAE gedaan, maar dat waren vooral ontspannende commissies.

Marc: Ik ben de coördinator vanuit het bestuur, mede omdat ik in 2011 al een keer het Actuariaatcongres heb georganiseerd. Dit jaar houd ik toezicht op de commissie en probeer ik mijn ervaring met het organiseren door te geven.

Nuria: Dat het door studenten en de actuarissen weer goed ontvangen wordt, en we willen graag meer bezoekers dan vorig jaar! Ook willen we graag dat iedereen iets leert tijdens het congres. Op deze manier willen we de trend doorzetten dat het congres steeds groter en belangrijker wordt binnen de actuariële wereld.

Hoe is de transparantie binnen de commissie?

Vanaf het moment dat Hugo en Karlijn elkaar tegenkwamen (de dag voor de eerste vergadering op een festival…) liep het al erg lekker ;) Inmiddels is Irene ook de roeicoach van Wouter geweest, en er wordt weinig achtergehouden binnen de commissie.

De nodige commissie etentjes bij Nuria thuis hebben hier zeker aan bijgedragen!

Welk commissielid wordt over 20 jaar de actuaris van het jaar?

Waarom hebben jullie voor EYE gekozen als locatie?

Nuria: Genetisch gezien moet dit Irene zijn, met haar familie vol actuarissen. Nousjka is vooralsnog de enige die actuariaat studeert, dus zij maakt ook goede kans!

Marc: Nuria heeft natuurlijk wel alle contacten om het helemaal te maken, als dochter van Arnoud Boot en met de goede contacten bij bijvoorbeeld Jeroen Breen kan het eigenlijk niet mis gaan.

COMMISSIE UITGELICHT

Allen: Het is een heel modern en mooi gebouw, en de locatie is heel goed. Er passen ook meer mensen in dan in de andere locaties, en EYE heeft een aantal goede zalen voor de interactieve sessies.

Karlijn: Toen we de eerste keer langsgingen bij EYE waren we meteen erg enthousiast, het gebouw is van binnen echt mooi en de sfeer is ook heel leuk!

Studeren in Budapest!

De laatste tijd gaan steeds meer studenten als onderdeel van hun studie op exchange naar het buitenland. In september vond u een artikel over het avontuur van Jana van Leuven in Melbourne, dit keer vindt u een verslag over studeren in Budapest!

DOOR: NIENKE VISSER

Hoewel ik mijn keuzes tijdens die gesprekken bij de koffieautomaat nog trots en standvastig wist te verdedigen, spookten dezelfde soort vragen ineens ook door mijn eigen hoofd toen ik op zondagavond 27 januari zat te wachten bij de gate op Schiphol. ‘Waarom doe ik dit eigenlijk?’ vroeg ik me af, enigszins zenuwachtig heen en weer schuivend op het plastic bankje te midden van een tiental solitair voor zich uit starende Hongaren.

Het was dat ik niet meer terug kon. Maar op dat moment wist ik ineens zeker dat ik niets liever zou doen dan nog gewoon een halfjaartje Lagrangen in de lokalen van JK. Moet een econometrist dit ook wel doen? Waarom de wereld gaan verkennen als je weet dat jouw soort beter gedijt op een plek waar alles oud en vertrouwd is? Maar mijn vlucht werd omgeroepen en de Hongaren en ik moesten boarden. Het avontuur ging echt beginnen!

Leven in Budapest De eerste drie nachten bracht ik samen met een grote groep andere uitwisselingsstudenten door in een hostel, om vanuit daar te zoeken naar een geschikt appartement. Iets wat je in Amsterdam niet hoeft te proberen, als je tenminste voor het einde van je uitwisseling iets gevonden wil hebben.

In Budapest werkt het echter prima. Binnen drie dagen had ik samen met een Frans meisje en een ander Nederlands meisje een prachtig appartement gevonden: hartje centrum, grote woonkamer, volledig gemeubileerd… voor de prijs van 230 euro. Per maand. Dit was het moment dat ik Hongarije in mijn hart sloot.

Corvinus University Na een week vol kennismaking met de stad, lokale tradities en elkaar, begon het ‘serieuze’ leven, waarmee ik doel op de periode waarin ik ook af en toe naar college moest. De vakken die ik volgde hadden niks met wiskunde te maken en liepen uiteen van ‘Hungarian for Beginners’ tot ‘Personality Types and Team Dynamics’. Ik bleek ook wel een vreemde eend in de bijt. Mijn medestudenten aan Corvinus University kwamen allemaal van een Business School en hadden naar mijn inschatting weinig notie van de gemakken van matrix algebra. In de eerste paar weken probeerde ik daarom behendig in het midden te laten wat ik studeerde, om na een tijdje tot de ontdekking te komen dat ik daarmee kon stoppen: de meesten namen geloof ik aan dat het om een slecht uitgesproken ‘Economics’ ging.

Vertrek naar Budapest

reden voor. Na twee maanden kwamen wij er achter dat vanwege een onenigheid tussen overheid en universiteit sommige van onze docenten al maanden niet werden uitbetaald. Niemand die hier over wilde praten: een docent die kritiek levert zet zijn baan en dus zijn toch al vrij geringe inkomen op het spel. Voor ons was dit behoorlijk schrikken en zette het lang-leve-delol leventje dat wij leidden even in perspectief. Het was goed te merken dat gastdocenten uit andere landen het opnamen voor hun Hongaarse collega’s en via de media probeerden iets aan deze situatie te veranderen.

De Hongaren kennen geen studentenverenigingen zoals wij dat in Nederland hebben, maar er wordt veel meer vanuit de universiteit georganiseerd. Het halfjaarlijkse universiteitsfeest bijvoorbeeld: iets wat je nooit op de UvA zult meemaken. Op een doordeweekse dag werd het hele E-gebouw omgebouwd tot gigantische club. Diverse bars, licht- en geluidinstallaties en een gigantisch podium deden je vergeten dat je eigenlijk gewoon in de aula stond. En dat deed men over het algemeen geloof ik ook. Beschonken, zwalkende en waarschijnlijk zeer misselijke Hongaren liepen door het hele gebouw en deden mij vrezen dat een tienkoppig schoonmaakteam nog een week nodig zou hebben om alle ravage te herstellen. Maar nee hoor, de volgende ochtend bij de colleges van 08.00 zou je, als je er niet bij was geweest, niet geloven dat er de vorige avond zo’n feest had plaatsgevonden.

Feesten

Maar ook buiten de universiteit om was er genoeg te doen en te zien. Budapest is een groot museum met prachtige gebouwen die kennelijk stammen uit tijden dat de stad zeer welvarend was. Helaas zijn nog vele sporen van het communisme te ontdekken. Hoewel dit al zo’n twintig jaar is afgeschaft, is de oudere generatie nog steeds niet gewend om vrolijk en luchtig in het leven te staan. Daar hebben ze ook nog niet altijd

Behalve dat wij alle lokale feestelijkheden konden meepakken was er ook genoeg te doen op het gebied voor uitwisselingsstudenten. Ondanks dat de studieinhoud niet helemaal aansloot bij mijn achtergrond, bleek de ‘Erasmus way-of-life’ zeer zeker wel mijn ding.

Te veel belevenissen om op te noemen, maar ieder met een hoog YOLO-gehalte. Een kleine greep uit de dingen die ik meemaakte: Wonen met andere internationale

Hoewel ik ietwat huiverig was bleken de vakken een welkome afwisseling te zijn op de eerste twee jaar vol Calculus en KReS. Discussiëren over de toekomst van de Europese Unie, onderzoek doen naar duurzame vormen van ondernemen en leren hoe je in het Hongaars zes tomaten bestelt: heel wat anders dan regressies maar toch verrassend leuk! Ook het volgen van lessen met andere internationale studenten was een hele belevenis. Ik kwam erachter dat het bij ons zo gebruikelijke lui achteroverleunen in de collegezaal en vooral niet antwoorden op Tuinstra’s vragen niet bepaald is hoe andere studenten hun colleges doorkomen. In het begin vond ik de Amerikanen die bij elke vraag van de docent als eerste hun hand de lucht in staken dus nog tomeloos overdreven, maar tegen het einde betrapte ik mezelf erop ineens ook heel graag het juiste antwoord te willen geven.

Toevallig vonden de meeste lessen plaats in het lokale E-gebouw. Qua naam precies hetzelfde, maar qua uiterlijk een plek die niemand zou kunnen verwarren met ons eigen vertrouwde FEB-gebouw.

Een imposante entree, Harry Potter-achtige zalen en prachtig gedecoreerde gangen zorgden ervoor dat ik bijna vergat dat ik gewoon aan het studeren was. Het ventilatiesysteem was helaas wel des Oostbloks: vanaf de derde verdieping konden we moeiteloos vertellen wanneer beneden in de kantine de goulash op tafel kwam.

studenten en al hun interessante gewoonten. ’s Ochtends niet weten wat je ’s avonds gaat doen, maar je exchangevrienden kennende wel zeker weten dat er iets gaat gebeuren. Huisfeestjes in betonnen Oostblokpanden, inclusief niet van lawaai gediende en met wandelstok bewapende Hongaarse buren. Vele uren in de bus tijdens weekendtripjes naar andere (altijd wel net iets minder mooie) Oostblok steden. Zwembadfeesten in het badhuis. Zelf gebrouwen Palinka proberen met alle risico’s van dien. Hardlopen op het eiland in de Donau.

Wijn drinken bij zonsondergang op de hoogste berg van Buda… Het beviel me allemaal meer dan goed.

Weer terug naar Nederland

Het heeft dan ook niet lang geduurd tot ik dat onbestemde gevoel dat me overviel bij de gate totaal was vergeten. Sterker nog, op weg terug naar huis schaamde ik me kapot voor alle voordringende Nederlanders in de rij bij de douane. Ik was me gaan identificeren met de heerlijk introverte Hongaar.

En hoewel de econometrist in mij het in het begin even moeilijk vond dat hij alleen getallen tegenkwam tijdens de lessen tellen in het Hongaars, is hij snel tot inkeer gekomen.

Hopelijk is het lezen van mijn ervaringen een duwtje in de rug voor andere econometristen die op zich wel op uitwisseling zouden willen, maar nog net niet helemaal durven. Een kleine tip voor hen: ga net als ik naar een land met een vreemde munteenheid. Je houdt niet alleen je eigen hersenen tevreden, maar maakt al je medestudenten blij als je alle bedragen moeiteloos naar de euro weet om te rekenen.

Ik wens je vast heel veel plezier!

ISP in de stad van tapas, Real en de Spaanse crisis Een studiereis naar Madrid, daar moet je veel voor over hebben, zo is wel gebleken op dinsdag 29 oktober 2013. Het verzamelen om 5 uur ’s ochtends zorgt namelijk voor veel slaperige gezichten, maar uiteraard heeft iedereen er toch ontzettend veel zin in. Nadat Joey zijn moeder nog even uit Rotterdam heeft laten komen om zijn paspoort te brengen en Annemieke na een twaalf uur durende reis uit Groningen uiteindelijk net op tijd aanwezig is, kunnen ook de laatste deelnemers door de veiligheidscontrole. Madrid here we come!

De tijd in het vliegtuig wordt zeer divers besteed. Een enkeling besluit om nog even twee uurtjes slaap te pakken, terwijl de rest een poging waagt om de Spaanse woorden uit het programmaboekje op de juiste manier uit te spreken. Termen als “Quiero 10 cervezas” (Ik wil 10 bier), “no tengo dinero” (Ik heb geen geld) en “Susanna paja!” (Susanna betaalt!) vliegen door de cabine heen. Arme medepassagiers…

De aankomst in Madrid is warm, de Spanjaarden zijn vriendelijk en met een zonnetje en strakblauwe lucht is het weer toch een stuk aangenamer dan de storm in Nederland. De reis naar het hostel verloopt voorspoedig en iedereen realiseert zich dat een wandeling in het Spaanse zonnetje toch net iets leuker is dan een wandeling naar het M-gebouw voor weer een college over zuivere schatters en extrapolatie van reeksen. Eenmaal bij het hostel aangekomen is er nog voldoende tijd om van het middagzonnetje te genieten.

Rond een uur of vier is het dan toch echt tijd om te verzamelen, het eerste bedrijfsbezoek staat op het programma. Met zijn zesentwintigen zijn wij waarschijnlijk verreweg de raarste groep die in het hostel heeft overnacht. Het ene moment loopt iedereen nog in zijn t-shirt en op slippers, het volgende moment staat iedereen strak in pak en helemaal klaar om te gaan.

De eerste bedrijfsbezoeken De eerste stop is het kantoor van Rabobank, met ongeveer 40 werknemers is het kantoor lang niet zo groot als het hoofdkantoor wat in Utrecht staat, maar toch worden vanuit hier klanten uit heel Spanje geholpen. We worden ontvangen door een Nederlander die al jaren voor Rabobank in Madrid werkt. Ruim een uur wordt er gepraat en gediscussieerd over de Spaanse cultuur en de kenmerken daarvan op de werkvloer. Uiteraard komen ook de activiteiten van Rabobank in Spanje en de economische crisis uitgebreid aan bod. Vooral Rashid is op dreef, werkgelegenheid voor iedereen is zijn motto. Na zijn betoog dat eindigt met legendarische woorden “snap je?”

Warm welkom in Madrid

kan onze presentator natuurlijk niets anders doen dan toegeven dat hij het volledig met Rashid eens is. Al met al een geslaagde eerste kennismaking met het Spaanse bedrijfsleven.

De volgende dag is het vroeg opstaan voor de deelnemers, het belooft een lange dag te worden. in alle vroegte worden we bij SAS verwacht. SAS is een bedrijf dat voor veel studenten nog relatief onbekend is, het heeft een sterke focus op de ontwikkeling van software.

Verschillende werknemers geven een presentatie over hun werkzaamheden. Zo leren we onder andere hoe software kan worden gebruikt om fraude op te sporen en hoe ons internetgedrag wordt gebruikt om ons te analyseren voor gerichte reclameaanbiedingen.

Op deze drukke dag is er weinig tijd om na te genieten, want we worden al snel weer verwacht bij de ICADE Business School voor een lunch en kennismaking met de universiteit en met Milliman. Naast de verhalen over acuariaat in Spanje maken we ook kennis met de uitgebreide lunchgewoonten in Spanje, wat zeker geen slechte ervaring is!

Aan het eind van de middag staat een bezoek aan het CEMFI op het programma, een onderzoeksinstituut op het gebied van economie. Na een warm welkom door de directeur en de opleidingsdirecteur econometrie krijgen we de mogelijkheid om met enkele PhDstudenten te spreken over hun ervaringen en interesses.

We sluiten de intensieve dag af met een rondleiding door het prachtige gebouw waar CEMFI is gehuisvest.

¡Hala Madrid!

Toch is de dag nog niet helemaal voorbij, want ‘s avonds reizen we af naar het Bernabéu-stadion voor de Spaanse topper Real Madrid - Sevilla. Als een stel kinderen, zo blij zijn de meeste van ons. Eindelijk een keer naar een wedstrijd van Real, dat we dan op de vierde ring zitten nemen we uiteraard voor lief. Over de wedstrijd zelf zou ik een heel boekwerk kunnen schrijven, met een uitslag van maar liefst 7-3 is dit een wedstrijd die absoluut de geschiedenisboeken in gaat. Penalty’s, een rode kaart, een fenomenale Christiano Ronaldo en de eerste echte goede wedstrijd van Gareth Bale, deze wedstrijd had het allemaal. We zijn allemaal fan: ¡Hala Madrid! Behalve Gwen dan, die zit haar huiswerk te maken tijdens de wedstrijd. Met de laatst mogelijke trein weten we uiteindelijk nog ons hostel te bereiken, snel onder de dekens want het is morgen weer vroeg dag.

Op bezoek bij de winnaars van de EG Als echte forenzen reizen we de volgende dag naar Getafe, één van de voorsteden van Madrid. Hier is universiteit Carlos III Madrid gevestigd, een universiteit die wij vooral kennen vanwege hun overwinning in de Econometric Game 2013. Bij aankomst worden we hartelijk ontvangen, na een introductie, een

Genieten van de stad Madrid Daarmee komt het studiegerelateerde deel van de reis tot een einde, die vrijdag is namelijk een feestdag in Spanje en kunnen we dus niet bij bedrijven terecht. Dat betekent wel dat we de donderdagavond mooi kunnen gebruiken om uitgebreid van de Spaanse keuken te genieten en vervolgens het Madrileense nachtleven te ontdekken. Het zou een geslaagde avond worden, met dansjes en drankjes tot in de vroege uurtjes.

Vrijdag aan het eind van de ochtend is het tijd voor de volgende activiteit. Met Go Car Tours maken we een twee uur durende rondrit in gele, tweepersoonskarretjes. Via een GPS-systeem krijgen we relevante informatie over de bezienswaardigheden waar we langsrijden. Veel bekijks trekken we absoluut, in de smalle straatjes vanwege onze vrolijke uitstraling en de luidsprekers met muziek en culturele inforrmatie, op de brede wegen vanwege een dragrace met vijf karretjes naast elkaar. Madrid heeft in ieder geval gemerkt dat we er waren!

Het resterende deel van de vrijdag en de gehele zaterdag staan in het teken van eigen initiatief. Cultuur snuiven, lekker eten, uitgaan en op het terras zitten zijn absoluut de meest voorkomende activiteiten van die dagen.Van zaterdag op zondagnacht vertrekken we naar het vliegveld om terug te keren naar het koude en natte Nederland.

Al met al kunnen we concluderen dat het een geslaagde ISP is geweest. Een lekkere balans tussen bedrijfsbezoeken, universiteiten, onderzoeksinstituten en ontspannende activiteiten. In combinatie met een mooie stad, lekker weer en een geweldige voetbalwedstrijd is dit een succesformule gebleken.

Uiteraard is dit ook te danken aan de leuke groep die mee was. Laat dit een opmaat zijn naar een nieuwe fantastische ISP volgend jaar.

vragenrondje en uiteraard een foto met de trotste professoren is het tijd om een rondje over het universiteitsterrein te maken.

De campus van Carlos III Madrid is indrukwekkend, de universiteitsgebouwen zien er schitterend uit, de bibliotheek is behalve adembenemend ook nog erg effectief en de sportvelden liggen er prima bij. Als de universiteit ook nog over een zwembad, whirlpool en spa blijkt te beschikken is iedereen helemaal overtuigd, hier moet je studeren!

Na de rondleiding maken we kennis met enkele studenten, waaronder een oud-deelnemer van de Econometric Game. De bewondering en het respect voor de Econometric Game zijn sowieso een rode draad door ons bezoek aan de universiteit. Het is bijzonder en mooi om zoveel waardering te krijgen voor dit VSAE project, een kleine studievereniging kan toch opeens heel groot zijn op de wereldkaart.

Aan al het goede komt een eind en dus reizen we terug richting Madrid, na een lunch is het tijd voor het laatste bedrijfsbezoek. We gaan langs bij hoofdsponsor Towers Watson. Hoewel het kantoor wat kleiner is dan het Nederlandse kantoor blijken er toch meer dan genoeg mensen te werken, zo worden we bijvoorbeeld welkom geheten door een Nederlander. Je komt ons volk toch ook overal tegen. Na verschillende presentaties over de werkzaamheden en verschillende afdelingen bij Towers Watson sluiten we de dag af met een rondleiding door het kantoor. De rondleiding wordt gegeven door een energiek Amerikaans meisje dat hier een onmisbare schakel is vanwege haar vaardigheden van zowel de Spaanse als de Engelse taal. Het begint al laat te worden en dus is het tijd om afscheid te nemen.

Nadat deze vriendelijke Spaanjaarden en Amerikaan ons hebben afgezet bij het metrostation kan er niks meer misgaan en keren we veilig terug naar het hostel.

Spaans wieleravontuur van student Pim Klaver De afgelopen twee jaar was econometriestudent Pim Klaver (23) niet in de collegebanken te vinden.

Na het behalen van zijn propedeuse Econometrie & Operationele Research zette hij namelijk koers richting Spanje om zijn jongensdroom te verwezenlijken: profwielrenner worden en “nooit meer terugkomen”. Het wielrennen verkeert onder andere door de financiële crisis echter in zwaar weer en mede hierdoor is Pim inmiddels teruggekeerd in Nederland.Wij spraken hem over zijn Spaans wieleravontuur.

STUDENT INTERVIEW

Vlakke polders en propedeuse In september 2009 begon Pim aan zijn studie. Waar velen de studieboeken en het studentenleven indoken, zat hij echter voornamelijk op zijn fiets.“Op dat moment reed ik voor een amateurclub in Utrecht. Per week trainde ik ongeveer 20 uur en elk weekend reed ik wedstrijden in Nederland.

Aangezien ik een liefhebber van bergop fietsen ben en je hier alleen maar vlak rijdt vielen die wedstrijden echter wat tegen. Ik had het gehad met de vlakke polders, de wind en de regen. Daarnaast vertelde mijn trainer Koen de Jong vaak mooie verhalen over zijn ervaring met het fietsen in het buitenland en hoewel ik redelijk laat begonnen ben met wielrennen (op 18-jarige leeftijd – red.) wist ik eigenlijk meteen dat ik prof wilde worden.

Zo is het idee ontstaan om na het behalen van mijn propedeuse naar Spanje te gaan.”

Die propedeuse moest natuurlijk wel eerst gehaald worden. “Hoewel het redelijk zwaar was om de studie te combineren met het fietsen wist ik mijn BSA te halen in het eerste jaar. Het jaar daarop heb ik de resterende drie vakken weten af te sluiten. Op 27 maart had ik mijn laatste tentamen V&O Actuariaat en op 28 maart zat ik in de auto naar Spanje.”

Op weg naar Spaans tankstation Als talentvol wielrenner bood Pim zich aan bij vele clubs uit Spanje. “Samen met mijn buurvrouw, die Spaans kon, heb ik een email opgesteld en gestuurd naar 15 ploegen. In deze email schreef ik dat ik graag in de bergen wilde koersen en dat ik zelf voor zoveel mogelijk dingen zou zorgen. Zo zou ik onder andere mijn eigen fiets meenemen, wat de ploeg weer kosten scheelt.

Van de 15 ploegen was er een ploeg die plek voor mij had. Aangezien de communicatie nogal stroef verliep had ik echter geen idee voor welke club ik precies mocht gaan rijden. Met enkel een gekregen telefoonnummer in bezit, wat ik moest bellen als ik de Spaanse grens over was, besloot ik het er gewoon op te wagen en in de auto te stappen. Als het niks werd was ik per slot van rekening ook zo weer thuis.

Aangekomen bij de grens nam een persoon de telefoon op die geen Engels sprak. “Veel verder dan ‘Pim, Pim, Pim’ en wat onbegrijpelijke zinnen kwam dat gesprek niet. Gelukkig wist een ander persoon aan de lijn mij vervolgens uit te leggen waar ik naartoe moest rijden en uiteindelijk arriveerde ik bij een tankstation. De mevrouw van dit tankstation, die ik aan de lijn had gehad, heeft na mijn telefoontje de ploegleider gebeld en die stond daar dus al op mij te wachten. Toen ik aan kwam rijden en een ploegleiderwagen zag staan wist ik dat het goed zat. De ploegleider had ook nog eens geweldig nieuws. Azysa, op dat moment een van de beste amateurclubs van Spanje, had plek voor mij in haar opleidingsteam. Diezelfde avond nog ontmoette ik een aantal andere buitenlandse gastrenners en kreeg ik een kamer toegewezen gekregen die ik deelde met twee renners uit Argentinië en een renner uit Uruguay.

We woonden in het hotel Latorre, dat sponsor was van de opleidingsploeg. Ik had niet beter terecht kunnen komen.”

Koersen in zonnig Spanje Binnen de kortste keren leefde Pim als een prof.“In een prachtig gebied, vlakbij Pamplona, trainden we dagelijks met de ploeg. We hadden een auto van de ploeg, een nieuwe fiets, een masseur en gingen tijdens de koersen met de spelersbus van hotel naar hotel. Jaarlijks reed ik 70 koersen door heel Spanje heen. Je bent constant onderweg, constant ben je gefocust op het wielrennen.

Je rijdt voor de ploeg, maar natuurlijk rijd je ook voor je eigen resultaat. Achteraf besef je pas hoeveel discipline je moet hebben.”

In 2011 stapte hij over van de opleidingsploeg naar de grote broer Azysa-Conor WRC. Bij die ploeg ontwikkelde hij zich sterk. “Ons team, waar ook Mike Terpstra (de broer van Niki) deel van uitmaakte, eindigde dat jaar als tweede in de Spaanse ranking en zelf zette ik onder andere in de Ronde van Ávila en

Baskische koersen goede resultaten neer.Voor mij was het zaak om constant te rijden, de goede vorm zat er aan te komen.”

“In het einde van 2012 reed ik heel hard en had ik het gevoel dicht tegen het hoogste niveau aan te zitten”, zo vervolgt hij. “Zo bleef ik toen op de klimmen een aantal keer alleen over met Rubén Fernandez, een zeer goed teken. Drie maanden geleden won hij namelijk de prestigieuze Ronde van de Toekomst in Frankrijk.

Concluderend is het wielrennen in Spanje gewoon heel eerlijk, de beste klimmers gaan voorop.”

Pim hield tweewekelijks de lezers van het NoordHollands Dagblad op de hoogte van zijn avonturen. In een van zijn columns schreef hij over de zo bekende ‘’Spaanse mentaliteit’’. “Op een dag reed ik een 122 kilometer lange wedstrijd, met na honderd kilometer een zware klim, in het Baskenland. De koers verliep naar wens en op de berg zat ik goed mee. Er was weinig organisatie in de kopgroep en volgens mijn kilometerteller zouden we er bijna moeten zijn. Ik besloot aan te vallen, met succes. Er reageerde niemand en de finish kon elk moment in zicht komen. Ik keek op mijn teller; 123 kilometer. Een bocht naar links.

Geen spandoek te bekennen. Snel keek ik achterom, nog steeds een mooie voorsprong. Ik ging winnen! Een bocht naar rechts. 125 kilometer gaf mijn teller aan.

Nog steeds geen finish maar een onverwachte klim die niet in het rondeboek stond. Mijn benen liepen vol en op twee kilometer van de werkelijke finish sloot de groep weer aan. In de sprint werd ik twaalfde. Viva España.”

Financiële crisis hakt erin In het Spaanse wielrennen zijn de gevolgen van de crisis goed zichtbaar, vertelt Pim. “Vanwege teruglopende sponsoring verdwenen veel wedstrijden. In Spanje had elke provincie zijn eigen meerdaagse. Zo´n veertig procent van deze wedstrijden is inmiddels verdwenen

of ingekort tot een eendaagse rit. Tevens zijn er veel profploegen opgeheven, in zeven jaar tijd van negen ploegen naar twee. Amateurs maken heel weinig kans om door te stromen. Veel professionele renners vallen zelfs terug naar het amateurniveau, omdat er gewoon geen plek meer voor ze is.”

Gepaard met de financiële crisis werd de wielersport de afgelopen jaren ook geschaad door een aantal grote dopingschandalen. “Het wegvallen van de sponsoring is puur een financiële kwestie, zo vervolgt hij. Wel krijg je van de dopingschandalen natuurlijk wat mee. Zo stond een jongen uit onze ploeg, die al eerder op doping was gepakt, op een gegeven moment eerste in het algemeen klassement van een van de vele vuelta’s. Daar reden we toen geen meter meer voor op kop. Dan moet je maar niet zoiets stoms doen.”

De afname in ploegen en wedstrijden was uiteindelijk ook de oorzaak van het einde van het Spaanse avontuur voor Pim. “Ik heb nog net iets van de goede tijd mee kunnen maken. Nadat Azysa-Conor WRC door het wegvallen van de hoofdsponsor verdween, heb ik begin dit jaar nog kort voor een andere Spaanse ploeg gereden. Die kwamen helaas haar beloftes niet na waardoor ik voor het Nederlandse Croford ben gaan rijden. Natuurlijk zijn er ook maar weinig mensen die de top halen.Wel reden er van mijn oude ploeggenoten dit jaar twee renners het WK voor beloftes. Inmiddels

zijn alle buitenlandse renners uit mijn ploeg alweer teruggekeerd naar hun land. Nu krijg ik zelfs berichtjes of Spanjaarden niet in Nederland kunnen gaan rijden, maar hier is daar de cultuur gewoon niet voor. In Spanje werd alles voor je geregeld, hier is de mentaliteit: we zien je wel bij de wedstrijd.”

Weer studeren In september 2013 heeft Pim zijn studie Econometrie & Operationele Research weer hervat. “Ik wil mijn studie nu zo snel en goed mogelijk afronden. Aangezien ik ruim twee jaar lang niet bezig ben geweest met studeren is het wel even wennen. Wel heb ik nu volledig de tijd om mij op de studie te focussen en alle colleges te volgen. Daarnaast kan ik nu op een andere manier gaan genieten van mijn studietijd. Dat ik nog maar zes uur per op de fiets zit is daarentegen wel jammer. Het hele leven in Spanje was gewoon geweldig.”

Op de vraag wat hij aan zijn Spaanse avontuur had overgehouden sloot Pim met een voor een wielrenner typerend antwoord het interview af: “Een aantal neptanden, bij een afdaling vloog mijn voorwiel eruit en ben ik heel hard gevallen waarbij ik ook mijn jukbeen brak.’’ Gelukkig zat ik heel snel weer op de fiets”.

Hongaar in Amsterdamse dienst: Dávid Kopányi De meeste studenten Econometrie en Actuariële Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam zijn goed bekend met docenten als Maurice Koster, Florian Wagener en nog vele anderen. Veel minder bekend zijn de toekomstige docenten en professoren, de PhD studenten. Een ideale gelegenheid om eens kennis te gaan maken met de aanstormende talenten van de econom(etr)iewereld. De eerste kennismaking is met Dávid Kopányi, die vooral een bekende is bij de ouderejaars. En wat leent zich daar nou beter voor dan een koude herfstdag in het toch ietwat troosteloze J/K-gebouw. Bas en Joris gingen op pad om Kopányi te ontmoeten.

De kamer ziet er uit als elk ander docentenkantoortje; het bord voor alle ingewikkelde formules is aanwezig, er staan computers en er liggen papieren over het hele bureau verspreid. Kopányi deelt zijn kantoor met Tomasz Makarewicz, ook een PhD student, die momenteel niet aanwezig is. Het ontvangst is vriendelijk en al snel krijgen we meer over Dávid Kopányi te horen. Hij is Hongaar, 28 jaar en opgeroeid in een kleine stad in de buurt van de Roemeense grens. Inmiddels is hij echter helemaal op zijn gemak in de grote Amsterdamse stad. Als een echte Nederlander fietst hij dagelijks de stad door.

Tijdens zijn middelbare schooltijd lag de focus nog absoluut niet op economie, met een programma gericht op geschiedenis en wiskunde kreeg hij echter toch toegang tot een economische opleiding aan de Corvinus Universiteit van Boedapest. Al snel kwam de focus op het wiskundige deel te liggen, vervolgens verruilde hij het mooie Boedapest voor het Nederlandse Amsterdam. Een halfjaar op uitwisseling met het Erasmusprogramma was genoeg om hem definitief voor Nederland te winnen. Vooral van het Tinbergen Instituut, waar hij het vak NonLinear Economic Dynamics volgde, raakte hij onder de indruk.Terug in Boedapest begonnen hij en zijn vriendin (nu zijn vrouw) zich voor te bereiden op een master en promotie in Nederland.

Zijn vriendin liep echter een jaar op Kopányi achter. Om het tussenjaar te overbruggen heeft hij nog een jaar gewerkt als junior analyst bij The Thesys Group, een data analyse bedrijf. In het begin was dat interessant en uitdagend, maar op een gegeven moment werd het teveel routine.

Omdat de opdrachtgevers niet wiskundig onderlegd waren, moest de analyse simpel worden gehouden; te simpel, naar Kopányi’s smaak. Hij was blij dat hij daar na een klein jaar weer weg kon. Samen met zijn vriendin meldde hij zich aan voor de masteropleiding aan het Tinbergen Instituut en beiden werden geaccepteerd.

Al tijdens zijn uitwisseling werd Kopányi dus gegrepen door het Tinbergen Instituut. Wat kan hij zeggen tegen studenten die twijfelen om daar een MPhil te doen? “Als je een PhD wil doen, moet je het gewoon proberen.” In het eerste jaar kan het zwaar zijn, maar daarna wordt het beter. In het tweede jaar kan je namelijk al vakken kiezen in een richting naar keuze. “Het Tinbergen Instituut heeft ook gewoon een heel goed programma.”

Ieder jaar worden maximaal 35 mensen aangenomen.

Op de vraag of hij een tijdelijke baan in het bedrijfsleven zou aanraden aan studenten die de ambitie hebben om te promoveren antwoordt Kopányi: “Ja, ik denk dat het een goed idee is om naar opties buiten de universiteit te kijken. Er kunnen grote verschillen zijn tussen je studie en het echte leven. Werkervaring kan zelfs nuttig zijn tijdens het onderzoek als PhD student.”

Onderzoek Kopányi’s onderzoek hoort thuis bij de industriële organisatie, een tak van de micro-economie waar met speltheorie het strategisch gedrag van bedrijven wordt onderzocht. Samen met zijn collega’s bij CeNDEF gebruikt hij bij zijn onderzoek minder sterke aannames dan in klassieke theorieën.

Het idee is dat mensen slechts begrensd rationeel zijn. Bij voorspellingen doen gewone stervelingen geen OLS uit het hoofd, bij optimaliseren geen Lagrange, maar ze gebruiken slechts vuistregels. Ook kunnen ze nieuwe vuistregels aanleren als ze merken dat die beter

het echte leven’’’ werken dan hun oude. Tot nu toe is zijn onderzoek vooral theoretisch van aard, maar in de toekomst wil hij zijn uitkomsten ook empirisch testen. Dit kan met experimenten bij CREED, waar veel studenten een aardig zakcentje bijverdienen, of met datasets over echte bedrijven.

Vandaag de dag worden bij economie op de middelbare school en in de bachelor op de universiteit nog theorieën aangeleerd, die aannemen dat mensen volledig rationeel zijn. Kopányi vindt desgevraagd dat de focus meer zou moeten verschuiven naar modellen waar mensen niet volledig rationeel worden verondersteld. Maar hij meent wel dat in de eerste paar jaar de klassieke basis bewaard moet blijven, hoewel dat op de lange termijn ook wel wat minder zou mogen.

Hij hoopt dat realistischer modellen dan leidend zijn.

Wiskundig gezien zijn de nieuwe modellen immers niet perse moeilijker, maar ze zijn wel een stuk realistischer.

De realiteit van lesgeven in Nederland Dat je als PhD student ook moet lesgeven, vergeten studenten nog wel eens als ze nadenken over een promotietraject. Voor sommigen is dit een probleem, maar niet voor Kopányi. Hij vindt lesgeven bijna net zo leuk als onderzoek doen. Lesgeven is ook heel belangrijk, vindt hij; het is toch een belangrijk component van wat je na je promotie ook gaat doen in de academische wereld.

Mede door dit enthousiasme, denken wij, werd Kopányi in 2011 student-assistent van het jaar bij het Tinbergen Instituut. Gevraagd naar zijn geheim moet hij even nadenken. Hij denkt dat het komt omdat hij niet alleen helpt om sommetjes op te lossen, maar ook om de stof erachter te begrijpen. De methode is uiteindelijk het belangrijkst. Het tentamen halen blijft natuurlijk het einddoel, dus het is ook zaak om de relevante opdrachten goed door te nemen.

Kopányi vindt actieve lessen leuk en Nederlandse studenten interactief, in elke klas ontstaat er wel een discussie. Daar speelt hij op in door vragen te stellen aan het publiek. Bas merkt op dat in Canada tijdens zijn uitwisseling de klassen vele malen actiever zijn geweest dan hier. Kopányi schrikt hiervan; nog interactievere lessen hoeft nu ook weer niet voor hem. Hij vertelt dat het in Hongarije juist andersom is. Daar is slechts de docent aan het woord en de studenten ontvangen

Hoewel, merkt Bas op, studenten in Canada wel cijfers krijgen voor activiteit in de les. Een duidelijk geval van omitted variable bias.

Kopányi geeft aan niet zoveel last te hebben van studenten die in de collegezaal met andere dingen bezig zijn; volgens hem komt dat überhaupt weinig voor bij de vakken die hij geeft aan derdejaars bachelor- en masterstudenten. De ervaring van de interviewers is soms anders, maar blijkbaar zijn de lessen van Kopányi dusdanig goed dat hij er geen last van heeft.

Geen wonder dat hij student-assistent van het jaar is geworden!

Bedrijfsinterview PwC Dit keer zijn Jozef en Marc langsgeweest bij PwC voor een interview met werknemers Lars Janssen en Jacqueline Heinerman. Lars werkt bij PAIS (Pensions, Actuarial and Insurance Services) en Jacqueline werkt bij Quantitative Analysis.

BEDRIJFSINTERVIEW

Kunnen jullie iets over jezelf vertellen?

Lars: Ik heb eerst aan de VU scheikunde gestudeerd, totdat ik bedacht dat ik eigenlijk geen onderzoek wilde doen. Toen heb ik besloten om econometrie te gaan studeren aan de UvA, omdat ik niet alleen met de theorie wilde werken maar ook de praktische dingen wilde doen. Tussendoor heb ik wel mijn scheikunde master afgemaakt. Ik heb in 4 jaar de Actuariaat master afgerond met een scriptiestage bij PwC in 2010. Daarna ben ik bij PwC in dienst getreden.

Jacqueline: Ik heb econometrie aan de VU gestudeerd, met als afstudeerrichting Operationele Research. Naast de studie was ik actief in de reiscommissie bij Kraket, de opleidingscommissie bij de VU en bij Lanx. Verder tennis ik nog regelmatig bij een studenten tennisvereniging (chip and charge). Net als Lars heb ik een afsluitende afstudeerstage gedaan bij PwC en ik werk nu iets meer dan een jaar fulltime bij PwC. Lars: Tijdens mijn studie heb ik ook nog scholierenvoorlichting gegeven voor de UvA bij middelbare scholen. Je merkt in het werk ook dat activiteiten naast de studie bijdragen in je ontwikkeling, zo ben je beter voorbereid om als consultant te gaan werken.

Je ziet ook dat wij allebei zijn begonnen bij PwC nadat we een stage hebben gelopen, zo´n stage of een werkstudentschap kan ik iedereen aanraden, omdat het een goede manier is om het bedrijf te leren kennen!

Hoe ziet een werkweek er voor jullie uit?

Lars: Ik zit ongeveer 3 dagen per week bij een verzekeraar in Den Haag. Verder ben ik bezig met audit werkzaamheden en heb ik contact met klanten.

Jacqueline: Ik werk nu aan twee verschillende opdrachten. Eén hiervan

is een corporate responsibility opdracht. Mijn maandag is de afgelopen weken vaak begonnen met een meeting bij de klant en in de week zelf ga ik regelmatig naar klanten toe.

Af en toe een dag thuis werken is dan ook een fijne afwisseling tijdens een drukke week.

Hoe zijn jullie bij PwC gekomen?

Lars: Ik heb tijdens een lunch op de Beroependagen met een consultant van PwC een heel goed gesprek gehad, toen kwamen we tot de conclusie dat het leuk zou zijn als ik mijn scriptie bij PwC zou schrijven.

Jacqueline: Ik had aan het eind van mijn studie door dat ik toch meer de consulting kant op wilde, via een familielid kwam ik toen bij de Quantitative Analysis afdeling binnen PwC uit. Tijdens de sollicitaties klikte het meteen en ben ik begonnen!

Kan je iets uitleggen over je werk?

Lars: Op mijn afdeling verrichten we veel werkzaamheden voor verzekeraars, pensioenfondsen en ondernemingen op het gebied van hun pensioenregeling. Dit varieert van het valideren van modellen tot het in kaart brengen van de impact van het nieuwe Pensioenakkoord op de huidige pensioenregeling.

Jacqueline: Bij Quantitative Analysis werken we op veel verschillende gebieden bij diverse klanten (van zorgverkeraar, financiële instelling tot telecombedrijf) en zijn de opdrachten variërend qua duur. Zo heb ik inmiddels opdrachten gedaan die op OR gericht waren maar ook op econometrie gebied. Ik gebruik de kennis van mijn studie ook vrij veel tijdens het werk, dat is een van de dingen die ik leuk vind aan het werken op die afdeling.

Krijgen jullie de ruimte om naast je werk trainingen/studies te volgen?

Jacqueline: Ja, het wordt erg gewaardeerd als je proactief met dit

soort dingen komt. Als jij iets graag wilt en je kan het goed onderbouwen, is alles mogelijk. Ik geef bijvoorbeeld trainingen aan PwC collega’s maar ik geef ook statistiek colleges aan de Nyenrode New Business School. De leidinggevende van ons team is tevens professor en stimuleert opleidingen naast het werk.

Lars: Ik heb de Aemas (postmaster opleiding Actuariaat aan de UvA) naast mijn werk gedaan. Naast de ruimte om studies en trainingen te volgen, zijn er ook mogelijkheden om jezelf op andere gebieden te ontwikkelen. Zo geef ik bijvoorbeeld Excel cursussen aan starters en zit ik ook een dag in de week in de redactie van het magazine van de Actuaris, het vakblad van het AG-AI.

Wat vind je leuk aan je werk?

Lars: Wat ik erg leuk vind is modelvalidatie. Binnen verzekeraars worden modellen ontwikkeld voor bijvoorbeeld Solvency II, het is heel uitdagend om zo’n model dan op een goede manier te beoordelen, zodat iedereen er beter van wordt.

Jacqueline: Ik vind het heel leuk dat iedere dag weer anders is. Ook vind ik het mooie aan consulting dat je de klant echt blij kan maken met je advies, het moment dat je ze nieuwe inzichten geeft veel voldoening!

Introduction1 Since the beginning of the 1990s, ski resorts in France have been facing a slowing-down and stagnation of market demand (Tuppen, 2000). This can also be observed for the ski resorts belonging to Compagnie des Alpes (CDA), which is the largest ski-lift operator in the world. For instance, the number of skier visits to the ski areas Paradiski and Les Menuires-Méribel each grew by 0.7 percent per year on average between 1993/1994 and 2011/2012 (based on annual reports).

In this paper, we investigate the determinants of long-run winter tourism demand using error-correction models applied to six large ski resorts in France. We place special emphasis on the effects of weather factors measured as snow depth and temperatures. Another important aspect involves our consideration of a bundle of factors that influence the demand for downhill skiing and snowboarding rather than the bivariate relationship between tourism demand and weather patterns.These factors include prices relative to competitors, domestic and foreign GDP, and dynamic adjustment processes.The data consists of six French resorts that are under the control of the Compagnie des Alpes group. Note that the CDA group is the largest ski-lift operator in the world, having recorded about 13.7 million skier visits for the winter season 2011/2012 based on annual reports. Its resorts include Paradiski, Espace Killy, Les Menuires and Méribel), Grand Massif (Flaine, Giffre), Les Deux Alpes, and Serre-Chevallier.

Our novel contribution to the previous literature is twofold. Firstly, we use new and unique data on the number of skier visits of the ski areas belonging to the Compagnie des Alpes group. Second, we use dynamic panel data methods to investigate the determinants of the number of

This paper investigates the determinants of longrun winter tourism demand for French ski resorts.

Using dynamic panel data models for six ski resorts, we find relatively low income and price elasticities in absolute terms, with long-run elasticities of 0.64 and -0.40, respectively. Furthermore, we find that snow depth measured at the weather station Col de Porte – located at the medium elevation of 1,325 metres above sea level – is a significant predictor of skier days in the high-elevation ski areas. However,the magnitude of the effect of poor snow years is very small.

skier visits.To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that estimates a dynamic tourism demand model using skier visits as the measure of tourism demand in the winter season.

Ski resorts have been the major focus of articles on tourism and climate change in recent years (Becken, 2013 for a survey of the literature). It is generally accepted that winter tourism is rather sensitive to variations in weather factors, such as changes in natural snowfall, temperatures, and precipitation patterns.

However, ski-lift managers often argue that skier demand is largely independent of variations in natural snowfall because of extensive snowmaking facilities.

For instance, CDA`s annual report states the following: “Because of the high elevation CDA are less affected by snowfall in lower altitude resorts” (CDA annual report 2007).

There are two main strands of literature. One strand investigates the impact of snow depth and other factors within a tourism demand model while accounting for price and income effects (for Austria, see Falk, 2010 and 2013; and Töglhofer et al., 2011).These studies find that the sensitivity of winter tourism demand (measured as the number of overnight stays) with respect to snow depth is relatively low. Furthermore, previous tourism demand studies on Alpine destinations find mixed evidence on the magnitude of income elasticities (Falk, 2010; Tögelhofer et al., 2011; Brida and Risso, 2009).

The other strand of literature – dealing mainly with climatology and tourism geography – investigates the bivariate relationship between skier demand and snowfall, neglecting income and price effects. Examples include Gonseth (2013) for Switzerland; Pickering et al., (2010) for Australia. These studies mainly examine the impact of low-snow winter periods on skier visits by comparing snow poor winter seasons with average winter seasons. The general findings of these studies are that snow depth strongly affects winter tourism demand. Overall, the previous empirical research presents a wide range of conflicting evidence across two strands of literature.

The relationship between the weather/climate and skier demand is rather complex. It is well known that winter tourism also generally depends on a bundle of factors, such as the real income of visitor countries and relative prices (Li, Song andWitt, 2005; Song and Li, 2008).

Snow conditions and temperatures in ski areas are also important factors. The previous literature reveals that skier demand is influenced not only by the weather and snow conditions at the ski resorts themselves, but also by the weather conditions outside the ski areas in lower elevation areas (Hamilton et al., 2007). The reason being that people in larger cities prefer other leisure activities during mild winter seasons. This is

(3) Here ln denotes the natural logarithm and is the error term. Since all variables except temperatures are transformed into logs, ß1 and ß2 can be interpreted as income and price elasticities. Economic theory suggests positive income elasticities and negative price elasticities. ß3 is the elasticity of skier visits with respect to snow depth. ß4 is the semi-elasticity of skier visits with respect to temperatures. We also use a dynamic panel data model to address habit persistence and/or partial adjustment (see Seetaram, 2010 for a recent application). To account for dynamic relationships, we use error-correction models that can be derived from an Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model.

Given the panel data nature of the study, we employ the pooled mean group (PMG) method that allows the short term impacts of income, relative prices, and snow depth to vary across ski areas, but keeps the long-term impacts equal(Pesaran, Shin and Smith, 1999). The longrun elasticities of skier visits with respect to real GDP, real prices and snow depth are: .

referred to as the “backyard hypothesis”. Since there are no official weather stations at high elevations in the French Alpes, we use weather data at the mediumelevation station Col de Porte.

Given the literature and the availability of data, the number of skier days is modeled as a function of real GDP of the visitor countries, relative prices, and weather factors:

(4) Our main research question deals with the extent to which the number of skier days is influenced by current weather trends (i.e., primarily temperature and snow depth but also precipitation). The pooled mean group estimator is estimated using the maximum likelihood method, where the long-run parameters are directly estimated.

Data

Empirical results As a first step, we examine the stationarity and cointegration of the time series under review. Panel unit root tests show that weighted GDP per capita and skier visits are I(1). The second-generation panel unit root tests introduced by Pesaran (2007), which

The empirical analysis covers six ski areas of the CDA group for the winter seasons 1993/1993 to 2011/2012. Skier visits are defined as the number of people who obtain a lift ticket or a lift pass and use the ski area for all or any part of one day and/or night.

The data is drawn from various annual reports of the Compagnie des Alpes group, which is a listed company.

Data on snow depth, temperatures, and precipitation can be downloaded from the National Centre for Meteorological Research2 The weather station in question is located at Col de Porte (Massif de la Chartreuse-Isère) at an elevation

of 1,325 metres above sea level. The data on GDP in constant euro prices is taken from OECD stats. To construct weighted GDP, we use the visitor share from 2006 (based on overnight stays) and information drawn from the annual accounts. The price variable is defined as relative prices to the main competitor - Switzerland.

We use aggregate prices to construct the relative price variable. In particular, we use service prices less prices of the housing sector as a proxy. The price index for services less housing in France and Switzerland and the EUR-CHF exchange rate are all taken from OECD stats. Figure 1 and Figure 2 shows the evolution of skier visits, relative prices, real GDP, snow depth, and temperatures for the period 1993-1994 to 2011-2012.

accounts for cross-sectional dependence, lead to similar results. Furthermore, simple ADF tests show that snow depth and temperature are I(0). Panel unit root tests with a small time span should, however, be generally interpreted with caution because the tests have no power. Table 1 reports the results of the pooled mean group estimator.

A panel cointegration test based on the significance of the error correction term introduced by Westerlund (2007) shows that the null hypothesis of no cointegration can be rejected at the 1 percent level. This indicates a long-run relationship between skier visits, real income, relative prices and snow depth. Overall, the R2 indicates that our model explains 35 percent of the variation in skier demand3. This indicates that a large proportion of the variation in skier demand cannot be explained by the evolution of income, relative prices and snow depth. Furthermore, unreported results reveal that serial correlation and heteroskedasticity do not exist in the residuals.

The long-run coefficients of real GDP, relative prices and snow depth show the expected sign. In the long run, skier visits are significantly and positively related to the real income of the visitor countries (measured as weighted GDP in constant prices) and snow depth at the Col de Porte weather station. Meanwhile, there is a negative long-run relationship between skier visits and relative prices. This means that an appreciation of the Swiss Franc, which would result in a decrease in the relative service prices of France versus Switzerland, will stimulate the number of skier visits to the six French ski resorts. A one-percent decrease in relative prices implies a 0.4 percent increase in skier visits.

The long-run real income elasticity is about 0.64 (see specification ii). This means that a one-percent increase in real income will lead to a 0.64 percent increase in the number of skier visits on average given the impact of relative prices and snow depth. A t-test shows that the income elasticity is significantly below unity. Thus, winter tourism activities in France – such

as skiing and snowboarding – are income inelastic or a necessity good rather than a luxury good. The findings that winter sport activities are a necessity good stands in contrast to the previous literature (see Falk 2010).

The low income elasticity might be explained by the large domestic consumer base, which accounts for 60 percent of skier visits on average (Compagnie des Alpes annual reports, various years). The low income elasticity also means that the ski business in France is not a “growth” industry. When real incomes are growing significantly in the visitor countries, the number of ski visits grows only very slowly. The longrun elasticity of skier visits with respect to snow depth at the Col de Porte weather station is 0.034.3

Conclusions This article has investigated the long-run determinants of winter tourism demand for six ski areas in France that belong to the largest ski-lift operator in the world, the Compagnie des Alpes group. The empirical results of a panel error-correction model show that relative prices, real income, and snow depth are significant long-run determinants of the number of skier visits.

Furthermore, we found that changes in relative prices have the largest effect on winter tourism demand, followed by real income and snow depth. Income elasticity, however, is about 0.64 and significantly lower than unity, indicating that ski tourism in France is not a luxury good, but rather a necessity good. Although the reduction of skier visits due to natural snow depth pulling is statistically significant, the effect is relatively small: On average, low-snow winter seasons, similar to 1989/1990 or 2006/2007, will lead to a reduction in skier visits of about 2.5 percent.

Cointegration Analysis of the Dynamic Nelson-Siegel Model using the Wild Bootstrap The Dynamic Nelson-Siegel model describes the evolution over time of the term structure of interest rates in terms of three factors, characterising the level, slope and curvature of the yield curve.

This article uses recently developed cointegration techniques for heteroskedastic time series to provide an empirical analysis of the model, based on monthly US data.We find evidence for a model with non-stationary level and slope factors, but a stationary curvature component.

Introduction Term structure models describe the shape of the yield curve and its evolution over time. To reduce the dimension of the modelling problem, it is convenient to relate the yield curve dynamics to a small number of common factors. A popular factor model is the Dynamic Nelson-Siegel (DNS) model, which imposes a particular parametric form on the loading of three factors. Depending on the question whether these factors are described by stationary or unit-root processes, the model implies a cointegrated vector autoregression (VAR) for a vector of yields.

This article investigates whether the cointegration restrictions implied by the DNS model are supported by an empirical cointegrated VAR model for monthly US government yields, covering the period 1970–2009.We pay particular attention to the fact that the interest rate volatility has changed considerably during this period. To accommodate this heteroskedasticity, we use recently developed cointegration methods based on the wild bootstrap.

The outline of this article is as follows. First, we introduce the DNS model and analyse its cointegration properties. An exploratory analysis of the data is provided next, revealing persistent changes in interest rate volatility. This is followed by a discussion of non-stationary volatility, and of the wild bootstrap. Based on these methods, we analyse the number nonstationary common factors, and the restrictions on the factor loadings implied by the DNS model.The findings are summarised in the conclusions.

Dynamic Nelson-Siegel model The yield curve describes how the effective yield on (government) bonds depends on the maturity of the bond. The typical shape of the yield curve is a concave function with a positive but decreasing slope.This shape is not constant: historical time series of yields show that not only the (average) level of the curve, but also its slope and curvature display considerable variation over time.To be able to characterise the time-series behaviour of the yield curve is of vital importance for risk management of fixed-income portfolios, such as held by pension funds.

Because the first loading is constant, the first factor determines the level of the yield curve. The second loading function is monotone, such that the second factor mainly determines the slope, and the third loading adds curvature to the yield curve, depending on the third factor. The parameter also affects the curvature; we follow Diebold and Li (2006) and fix its value to 0.0609.

The model is completed by a time-series specification for the factors fit, i = 1,..,3. If each of these is modelled as a stationary autoregressive process, then it follows that a vector of yields at p different maturities, , will follow a stationary VAR model. Another version of the model arises if both the level and slope factors are non-stationary: then there are p–2 stationary linear combinations.

We find that different versions of the model imply a different cointegrating rank r (the number of stationary linear combinations), as well as a particular structure of the pxr matrix of cointegrating vectors , characterising the r stationary linear combinations . It is convenient to formulate hypotheses not in terms of itself but in terms of its orthogonal complement , a px(p-r) matrix of full column rank such that = 0. in an unrestricted multivariate model, factors models are a convenient device to reduce the dimension of the problem. Based on an approach to interpolate the yield curve at any given point in time developed by Nelson and Siegel (1987), Diebold and Li (2006) proposed the DNS model. Data We use monthly observations over the period 1970:1–2009:12 on government zero yields with maturities 3, 12, 36, 60, and 120 months. The zero yields have been constructed as described by Diebold and Li (2006). The maturities have been chosen such that the dimension of the VAR model stays manageable (p = 5), and yet a reasonable coverage of the short, middle and long end of the term structure is obtained. A time-series plot of the data is given in Figure 1.

Cointegration analysis starts with specifying a VAR model. Based on the Hannan-Quin information criterion, we select a model with two lags (i.e., a VAR(2)) and a constant term. The residuals of this model do not display significant autocorrelation, at least if heteroskedasticity-robust versions of the autocorrelations tests (based on the wild bootstrap, discussed below) are used.

To investigate possible heteroskedasticity, the top panel of Figure 2 displays the time-series plot of the residuals from the first, third and fifth equation of the VAR model (corresponding to the 3-month, 3-year and 10-year yields). The bottom panel depicts the corresponding variance profiles, see Cavaliere and Taylor (2007). These are defined as the cumulative sum of squared residuals over part of the sample, divided by the full-sample sum of squared residuals; plotted against the fraction of the sample that is considered. Therefore, the variance profile function increases monotonically from 0 to 1, as its argument increases from 0 to 1. A diagonal line would indicate that the variance is constant over all sub-periods, so large deviations from this diagonal line indicate large and persistent changes in volatility.

From Figure 2, we clearly see that the residual variance, and hence the slope of the variance profile, 4 2

increases in the late 1970s, stays at a high level until the mid-1980s, and then decreases to a much lower level. This pattern is most pronounced in the first residual, corresponding to the 3-month rate, but the same pattern is observed in the other residuals. The low volatility in the period from 1985 to 2008 is also observed in many other macro-economic time series, and is commonly referred to as the Great Moderation (which ended during the financial crisis).

Non-stationary volatility The observed variation in residual variance may be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is that it reflects volatility clustering, and hence could be described by a GARCH-type process with a relatively high degree of volatility persistence. An alternative interpretation is that the variance of interest rate residuals depends positively on the level of the interest rate, because the high-volatility period coincides with a period in which all yields were higher than 7.5%, as can be seen in Figure 1.Yet another interpretation would be that there are infrequent exogenous shifts in the variance, possibly brought about by monetary policy changes.

The latter type of unconditional heteroskedasticity is often referred to as non-stationary volatility. It calls for a specific type of asymptotic approximation of the distribution of estimators and test statistics, where it is assumed that breaks of the same size will occur at the same fraction of the sample, for all possible sample sizes. Using this approach, it can be shown that standard cointegration methods, developed by Johansen (1996) for the case where the errors are homoscedastic and normally distributed, are no longer asymptotically valid. In particular, the critical values tabulated in Johansen’s book for the trace test of the cointegrating rank will not lead to a test with an 4

Wild Bootstrap As analysed in detail by Cavaliere et al. (2010) and Boswijk et al. (2013), the asymptotic size distortions implied by non-stationary volatility may be eliminated by the use of a particular version of the bootstrap, the so-called wild bootstrap. Moreover, these authors show that the wild bootstrap will also lead to valid inference if there is in fact stationary conditional heteroskedasticity instead of (or in addition to) nonstationary volatility.

The general procedure of a wild bootstrap likelihood ratio test in a VAR model is as follows: 1. Estimate the VAR model imposing the restrictions under the null hypothesis, and without these restrictions, and calculate the likelihood ratio statistic by twice the difference of the maximised loglikelihoods.

2. From the model with restricted parameter estimates, generate B new samples of the same sample size, where the bootstrap error vector at time t is given by the (restricted) residual vector at time t, multiplied by a simulated random variable with mean zero and variance one.

3. Calculate, for each of the B bootstrap samples, the likelihood ratio statistic, in exactly the same way as in the original sample.

4. The wild bootstrap p-value is given by the percentage of bootstrap likelihood ratio statistics that exceed the original likelihood ratio statistic.

Step 2 in the procedure implies that the bootstrap samples satisfy the null hypothesis (because they are generated using the restricted estimates), and display the same type of heteroskedasticity as the original data. These two aspects can be shown to imply that the resulting test is asymptotically valid: if we reject the null hypothesis if the bootstrap p-value is less than 5%, then the type I error probability of the test converges to 5% (as the sample size tends to infinity).

Empirical results Table 1 displays the likelihood ratio test statistics for the hypothesis that the cointegrating rank is at most r, against the unrestricted alternative (column LR). The column p-asy gives the asymptotic p-values based on the homoskedastic case, as follows from the theory in Johansen (1996); the column p-wbs gives the wild bootstrap p-values.

We observe that the hypothesis of (at most) 0 or 1 cointegrating vectors can be rejected at any reasonable significance level. The hypothesis of at most 2 cointegrating vectors is rejected using asymptotic p-values, and also using the wild bootstrap

version of the test if we use a (rather liberal) 10% significance level. The difference in p-values between the two approaches illustrates the effect of the heteroskedasticity. We tentatively conclude that there is some (weak) evidence for at least 3 cointegrating vectors, which means at most 2 non-stationary common trends. Although there is no evidence for r=4, we do start by analysing that possibility below, because the case of a single non-stationary common trend is of theoretical interest.

The first component is equal to one by a normalisation restriction; the other components have standard errors varying from 0.03 (second component) to 0.12 (last component). The estimates do not seem to differ much from their value under the hypothesis, implying a non-stationary level factor.

The likelihood ratio statistic for this hypothesis (under the maintained hypothesis of 4 cointegrating vectors) is given by 8.01, with an asymptotic p-value of 0.09, but a wild bootstrap p-value of 0.34. Again, we see that inference is affected by (the correction for) heteroskedasticity: if we were to ignore this, then we would reject the hypothesis at the 10% significance level, whereas the wild bootstrap test reveals that there is very little evidence against this hypothesis.

Next, consider the model with r = 3 cointegrating vectors, and hence two common trends. This means that the yield spreads are not stationary. However, a reasonable hypothesis to analyse is that the stationary linear combinations of the yields can in fact all be represented as linear combinations of the spreads. It can be shown that this corresponds to the hypothesis that is orthogonal to a vector of ones. The likelihood ratio test statistic has an asymptotic p-value of 0.24 and a wild bootstrap p-value of 0.45, so that we cannot reject this hypothesis. The suitably normalised estimate of

asymptotically controlled significance level, and the same applies to likelihood ratio tests for hypotheses on using chi-squared critical values.

Conclusion In this article we have used recently developed cointegration techniques to analyse restrictions implied by the Dynamic Nelson-Siegel model. Wild bootstrap methods have been used to allow for non-stationary volatility, a phenomenon that seems present in the data. The empirical analysis has shown that there is evidence for a term structure model with two non-stationary common trends. The first of these can be interpreted as a level factor. The second factor is a slope factor, but its loading function does not satisfy the parametric form of the DNS model; instead, it may be restricted to a linear function. The analysis has illustrated that there may be large differences between asymptotic and wild bootstrap p-values, which confirms the importance of accounting for heteroskedasticity in time-series models.

The Term Structure of Equity Risk Solvency II has specified the 1 year Value at Risk at a 99.5 % confidence level as the key measure of risk. However, risk can be measured by various measures, models and data sets. Since the level of risk is dependent on the time horizon, this thesis investigates the term structure of equity risk.

Moreover, the sensitivity of the results is analyzed by a comparison of different models.

The main objective of Solvency II is policyholder protection by ensuring financial soundness of insurance companies. The insolvency risk of an insurance company must be reduced to at most 0.5 percent for the coming year, leading to the requirement of holding a minimum amount of capital.

Consequently, the one year Value at Risk at a 99.5 percent level (VaR10.995) is of interest for Solvency II irrespective of the liabilities’ duration. This can be problematic for life insurance companies with long term liabilities. Shi and Werker (2012) find that that a constrained investor invests more in the risk-free asset than unconstrained investors.

Moreover they calculate that for a 96% funded pension plan, both an annual Value-at-Risk constraint and an annual Expected Shortfall constraint can lead to an economic cost of about 2.5% - 3.8% of initial wealth over a 15-year horizon. Solvency II requires life insurance companies to use a mark to market valuation of assets and liabilities. There is no reason however to liquidate investments in the short term if liabilities lay in the far future. If the risk of equity is a non-constant function of the holding period it might be argued that the basis capital requirements should depend in a similar way on the average liability duration of the insurance company.

Since the resulting capital requirements for equity risk forces life insurance companies to change their asset allocation, the relevance for modeling the equity risk correctly is obvious. This thesis investigates how the risk of equity relates to the investment horizon.

The Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisor (CEIOPS) constructed a model to measure the VaR10.995 for equity in order to substantiate the Solvency II requirements. But besides the possible dependence of equity risk over time, the CEIOPS model is most probably misspecified. Many assumptions that were made are likely not to hold, and the model does not take into account a variety of factors that are important when portfolio risk is analyzed. CEIOPS assumed log year returns to be normally distributed, however, Campbell and Viceira (2002) found that the risk of equity is decreasing in the time horizon if standardization is done with the -rule. There exists a large amount of research that shows mean reversion of returns, but most of these results

Introduction

Methodology The measurement of risk is very sensitive to modeling choices.Trivially the model used is of crucial importance for the term structure. Furthermore the variance and Value at Risk measure different features of risk and hence have different term structures. Other possibly relevant factors are the chosen methods to calculate the measures or models. Because of these sources of sensitivity, a precise description and substantiation of the measurement is given. In this methodological chapter, the first section describes the different models, succeeded by a section which considers the different measures of risk. The last section deliberates on other methodological issues.

Model Description All models are based on the dynamics of the daily log returns Xt = log(Pt) - log(Pt-1), where Pt is the price level of the index at time t. In the classical, AR(p) and AR(p)GARCH(m,s) model the coefficients are estimated and further investigation relies on theoretical results. In the other models, first the parameters of the model are estimated, whereafter the model produces Z * 252 * T simulations , which are aggregated to form T year returns. and are based on these Z observations.

The Classical Model Utilizing the efficient market theory, the Classicals argue that arbitrage opportunities do not exist on the stock market (Fama, 1965). Hence the natural logarithm of the stock price St, must move as a random walk so that St = St-1+ , with EQ[St|St-1] = St-1, where Q is the risk neutral probability measure. Because stock price movements can be seen as the sum of infinitely small price movements that are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.), the Central Limit Theory (CLT) provides an argument to model the error in the random walk as normally distributed. AR(p) - GARCH(m,s) AR(p) models are incapable to explain the volatilityclusters present in equity returns. Bollerslev (1986) introduced GARCH models to capture the variance dynamics of univariate time series and model them as time varying. The AR(p)-GARCH(m,s) model models both the return dynamics as the variance dynamics.The GARCH model indicates a different unconditional variance than the classical model.

The stationary bootstrap Parametric methods such as the models discussed so far are more sensitive to model misspecification, than nonparametric techniques, because the former rely on more assumptions. Bootstrap methods introduced by Efron (1979), can be useful as a nonparametric tool to replicate returns based on i.i.d. observations. For financial time series i.i.d. resampling of data as in the bootstrap is not appropriate, because log-returns are not independent; see Ruiz and Pascual (2002). Approaches to bootstrap financial time series should therefore keep the dependence structure intact. The Stationary Bootstrap (SB), first described by Politis and Romano (1994), is a nonparametric method which preserves

were found within the Vector autoregression (VAR) framework (see e.g. Barberis (2000) and Bec and Gollier (2009) ). The VAR models are parametric, so conclusions with respect to the level of risk are invalid if the underlying assumptions don’t hold. Therefore a robustness check is needed whether the risk of equity indeed decreases as the investment horizon increases.

By specifying a number of models, a pluralistic approach is conducted to find the term structure of equity risk for different measures of risk. The models used in this thesis are the 3 geometric random walk (the classical model), the Autoregressive (AR(p)) model, The Autoregressive - Generalised Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic AR(p)-GARCH(m,s) model, the Stationary Bootstrap (SB), a Semiparametric Copula-based Multivariate Dynamic (SCOMDY) t-Copula model and the MixStable model. The analytical results of the classical model provide a useful reference point in this analysis. The AR(p) and AR(p)GARCH(m,s) model provide additional estimates of the long-run variance. The SB, proposed by Politis and Romano (1994), assumes some form of stationarity in the returns and is used to show the effect of both daily and yearly dependency of asset returns. The t-Copula model reveals the nonlinear cross-sectional dependency between asset returns.

t-Copula The Copula model is a more sophisticated multivariate model, which is very well suited to model the dependence between indices, while estimating the marginal densities separately. The t-Copula model connects the joint distribution of the indices with the marginal distributions by means of the correlations and the tail dependence index. This thesis will use the SCOMDY model of Chen and Fan (2006) to specify the conditional mean and variance of the univariate time series parametrically with the AR(p)-GARCH(m,s) model, whereafter the nonparametric marginal distributions of these standardized residuals are fitted on a Student-t Copula. The Student-t Copula is chosen in this thesis, because Chen and Fan (2006) and Fischer et al. (2009) have shown that this Copula captures excess kurtosis and models the dependence between financial time series accurately.

The parameters of the SCOMDY model are estimated with the three-stage KME-CML method, described in Fantazzini (2010). In the first stage the standardized residuals ( , ... , ) are transformed into uniform variates ( , ... , ) for t = 1, ... , n with = ( ) and n the length of the data set.

The correlation matrix is estimated on the in the second stage using a method-of-moment estimator based on Kendall’s Tau. Finally the is estimated using Maximum Likelihood in the third stage.

The simulations are performed by first drawing ’s from the t-Copula model with the estimated and , whereafter the quantiles are transformed with the ECDF of the standardized residuals . These are consequently the at input for AR(p)-GARCH(m,s) simulations to produce the simulated returns .

These simulations will be noted as the t-Copula model in Section 4.1.

Variance Under the classical model, log returns are multivariate normally distributed. Hence the mean and (co) variance(s) define the complete distribution. If the univariate log returns are i.i.d. and Xt ~ N( ; ), t N, then YT = Xt ~ N(-T , T ), so that the rule follows from = . This scaling does not need the assumption of normality, it suffices if the returns are uncorrelated. With this rule standardization could done by looking at or the Variance Ratio . The minus is put in front of the sum of returns in order to get a positive VaR and ES. The effect of the dependence structure on the long-run variance will be examined in this thesis.

Value at Risk An alternative measure of risk is the VaR. It measures the maximum loss of a portfolio given a certain confidence level.The VaR over an investment horizon of T years with confidence level , (VaR ), is given by = P[YT VaR ] = FT (VaR ), where FT(.) is the Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of YT . the dependence structure of the observations within blocks. It resamples blocks of consecutive observations with replacement, where the block length is random in each draw, so that the created bootstrap series are strictly stationary.

The algorithm for SB can be described as follows.

Suppose that the log return {Xt : t } is a stationary weakly dependent time series taking values in R. SB replications are constructed as a Markov proces: If = Xj then = Xj+1 with probability p and with probability 1 - p the will be uniform randomly drawn from the historic returns. In the special case that i = N then = X1 with probability p. This will create j blocks of length lk, where lk are geometrically distributed with E[lk] = 1/p for all k = 1... j. In the Results section, the average block length is chosen such that it is optimal according to Politis and White (2004).

So far this thesis has described univariate models for the measurement of risk. However, because indices are correlated, the risk of one equity index might be dependent on multiple other indices. Furthermore, extreme events for the individual indices are likely to occur at the same time. This thesis uses a multivariate SB to capture the risk of an equally weighted portfolio.

The same SB algorithm is conducted as before on a multivariate vector Xt, where Xi,t represents the log return of index i.

Moreover = -T, while = ( ), which leads to a counterintuitive result. If investors perceive the risk to be higher, they will require a larger risk premium, so that the risk actually becomes relatively smaller if the investment horizon is sufficiently large.

Data The measurement of risk is inherently dependent on data. At least all data-based models assume that past returns resemble information about the future. This induces the question which data set should be used.

Unfortunately it is not feasible to take all existing equity into account.This thesis chooses to use multiple indices, based on the length of the time span of the index and whether dividends are included. The Dow Jones, AEX, FTSE, CAC, DAX and an equally weighted portfolio of the EU indices are analyzed. Indices are used, because their risk is better diversified than individual stocks.

Equity risk measured using total return indices (i.e. including dividends) reflects the nominal return risk. In order to find the real return risk, the data should be adjusted for inflation. But inflation is not measured daily and is sensitive to the choice of the basket of goods that is included. Furthermore, if inflation has no effect on equity returns, including it makes the data noisier.

Results Daily and Cross-Sectional Dependence This section inquires the risk term structure by comparing results from the SB and t-Copula model with the classical model. The comparison between SB and the classical model provides a useful illustration for the effect of daily dependencies. Simulating by drawing independent daily returns from the ECDF would give similar results as the classical model, because of the CLT. Therefore the comparison of SB with the classical model reveals these dependencies.The t-Copula shows how the estimated risk differs in a multidimensional setting with nonlinear dependence between the indices in combination with a heavy-tailed univariate GARCH specification.

Fig.1(next page) compares SB outcomes with estimations from the t-Copula and the 0.005 quantile from the normal distribution (qnorm) with mean T and variance T . In addition Fig.1 illustrates the effect of choosing different indices based on the same time span.

The VaR measured for a long horizon is very sensitive to the chosen data set. Important factors driving these results are the mean and standard error of the processes. Eq. (13) shows how they impact the classical model. The difference between the t-Copula and the other models is large. For all portfolios the t-Copula indicates a higher VaR than the other models.

The VaR line of the SB is lower for the Dow Jones, CAC, FTSE and EU, while the difference is growing in the investment horizon. For the DAX there is no difference and for the AEX, the SB implies a higher VaR than the qnorm.The daily dependence structure causes negative skewness, excess kurtosis and , so that the VaRs differ. Except for the t-Copula model based on the DAX, all models for all indices indicate a maximum in the VaR term structure.

In Table 1, the estimated lrvâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are shown together with their standard errors. Remember that all reported lrvâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, except the AR-GARCH lrv, are multiples of and do not take into account the uncertainty of this estimate. Therefore, instead, the standard error of the variance is given as percentage of . Most models estimate the lrvâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at or below one, except for the AEX and DAX in the t-Copula model. Note that the reported standard deviation of the estimates for the simulated t-Copula model and SB are standard deviations of the simulated variances, they do not include, for example, parameter uncertainty of the copula model, which is very important. The parameter uncertainty causes a huge standard deviation for the lrv estimate of the ARGARCH model. As the t-Copula model has even more parameters in addition to the AR-GARCH parameters, the standard deviation for the t-Copula estimated lrv should be higher. The lrv for the Dow Jones, CAC and FTSE is estimated below 1 for almost all models.

The results are mixed for the AEX and the DAX.

But none of the models, except the t-Copula and AR(p) for the DAX, can reject the hypothesis that lrv is equal to 1 at an 5% significance level. ( ) measures the uncertainty of the lrvClassical = 1 . For lrv’s falling within ( ) ( ) distance from 1 , the null hypothesis of lrv=1 cannot be rejected by the classical model.

Care must be taken when interpreting The EU lrv estimates. The SB and t-Copula model, simulate the EU indices simultaneously and form an equally weighted portfolio after the simulations are run, while the other models estimate parameters of the univariate equally weighted EU-portfolio. Although the estimated t-Copula lrv of the DAX is very high, this does not seem to impact the EU lrv very much.

Yearly Dependency This thesis simulated daily data to enable a comparison between different kind of models.Yet, daily dependence could differ from yearly dependence. Since this thesis simulates up to 45 years of returns, a sensitivity analysis

is needed regarding this aspect.

For the SB this thesis calculated an optimal block length with the formula derived by Politis and White (2004), but this derivation is based on multiple assumptions such as the existence of an absolute moment of order higher than 6. They minimize the Mean Squared Error of the SB estimator’s variance.

A low block length automatically rules out long term dependence in returns. Bec and Gollier (2007) claim that the equity return dynamics may be influenced by the state of the financial market cycle. They find that the financial market cycle indicator Granger-causes returns on equities and that the VaR0.995 is higher in expansionary periods than during recessions, which they explain by mean reversion of equity returns.

Hence the effect of varying the average block length is analyzed in Fig 2. Modeling with an average block length of 8 trading days is considered to capture the daily dependence. An average block length of 40, captures the weekly dependence, 252 the monthly dependence and 1260 trading days the yearly dependence. The results are notable, the risk increases if the block length is increased to two month’s and increases even more if the average block length is one year, but sharply decreases for an average block length of five years. So that results following from a model based on dependency of daily returns differs from those where dependence in returns is modeled yearly.

This introduces the open question: which block length

should be used if the results differ so much?

Sensitivity to the Average It may be clear that results regarding the risk of an index is dependent on the average. estimated for the FTSE with the classical model at the time span 1988 - 2013 is equal to -1.42, while it is equal to -3.17 for the Dow Jones at the same time span.

The average is an unbiased and efficient estimator of the process’ mean, but has a variance equal to = where n = 6631 is the number of observations in the time series. For small time spans this variance of the mean is small and has minimal impact on the VaR, also because the mean itself has little impact. But as the horizon increases, the impact of the mean increases simultaneously with the variance of the mean. My thesis has shown that none of the alternative models considered in this thesis can reject the null hypothesis of the VaR implied by the Classical model, because the uncertainty about the mean is too large.

Discussion The yearly dependency section has shown that the time scale at which the returns are modeled matters. The question is which approach is best. Unfortunately this is not testable, because there is little data available of yearly returns. Returns are modeled daily, because the larger amount of data points makes estimation more efficient and enables more complicated models with more parameters such as the GARCH and t -Copula models. Model misspecification concerns arise, since for the SB the long-run dynamics implied by the daily model differs from the long-run dynamics implied by the yearly model.

Notice that Solvency II is interested in the one year VaR0.995, but that this thesis mainly investigates “absolute” measures of risk.These are very different from adjusted measures of risk. In fact any scaling method is arbitrary and makes interpretation less clear. The classical model is usually used as the model to scale with, but gives

only an indication of whether the risk is more or less compared to that model. The scaling does not give an indication of what the real risk is.

The 1 year risk benchmark might be pragmatic from a regulatory point of view, but causes adverse effect with respect to risk management if consequently risks are modeled incorrect. Decisions that increase the risk with respect to the liability horizon will be made if insurers face too high capital requirements for equity risk. The aim of Solvency II is policyholder protection, but policyholders may have an horizon varying from 1 day to 60 years, consider a student entering the labor market, so that the term structure of equity risk is very much of interest. For all models and indices the risk of equity is not constant over time.

The Sensitivity to the Average section has shown that for high T the uncertainty of the VaR estimates of the classical model is due to uncertainty of the estimated mean. At the same time, the mean plays an increasingly important role as the investment horizon increases.This leads to the view that even if the average of the past equity returns cannot be used as a guide, if equity has a comparatively high expected mean, it is rational from a regulatory perspective to lower the capital requirements for equity when liabilities lay further in the future, because the impact of the mean on the VaR increases with T. The only nontrivial question is how to do that.

The implementation of Solvency II is based on one year risks. However, risks are not constant and depend nontrivially on the investment horizon. Hence if the aim is policyholder protection, risk management and regulation thereoff should depend on the liability structure of the life insurer.

The impact of the mean relative to the standard error on the VaR increases with T under all models including the Classical. Moreover, the long run variance is estimated significantly different from in many models and indices. However, the t-Copula indicated that negative skewness and excess kurtosis increase the risk considerably. Further research is therefore needed to find out how the capital requirements should be dependent on the liabilities.
