As we welcome a new year, I’m reminded that beginnings aren’t just about what comes next – they are a prompt to reflect on what brought us here. January brings optimism and new energy, and at Butterfield, our momentum is fueled by our legacy.

In this issue, you’ll meet residents whose stories illuminate how our community has evolved. They have witnessed expansions, new programs and models of care – changes made not for the sake of change, but to better support all who call Butterfield home. Their reflections affirm what many of us already know: progress at BTV has always been intentional, steady and mission-driven.

Knee injuries from his junior high football days in Texas quashed Dwain Newman’s dreams of being a sports star. Still, with determined ambition and a willingness to take chances, he played several sports throughout his youth and went on to become a successful businessman in Northwest Arkansas – even though his bum right knee has caused a slight limp most of his 92 years. While his life has been full and rewarding, getting older has brought its share of heartache and challenges.

In 2023, he lost the love of his life and wife of nearly 44 years, Glenda Newman. He recently had to sell his car after giving up driving due to failing eyesight, a major frustration for someone so independent. He bought a powerful magnifying glass and reading light about a year ago to hopefully help him, but his deteriorating vision now makes many shapes fuzzy at best.

Each morning, Dwain turns on the big screen TV in his living room, listening to news, sports and stock reports while drinking his standard two cups of coffee. He’s outgoing, charismatic and grateful for a long life infused with lasting friendships, extended family, business development and considerable travel.

Dwain’s approach to sports during his youth — a mix of competitive spirit and healthy ego — continued on into his career: “I wanted to be the kingfish. I wanted to jump the highest in our neighborhood.

You know, who could throw the football or the baseball the farthest, or who could run the fastest from this post to that post.”

Building a Family and a Career Dwain grew up in Borger, Texas, a small oil and gas town north of Amarillo, where his dad was a superintendent doing pipeline construction for transferring natural gas. The landscape was flat and tan, and each Saturday he swept the front and side yards where grass refused to grow. The town of 29,000 was surrounded by vast ranch land.

He wasn’t thrilled when his family moved to Springdale in late April 1951 during his junior year of high school, causing him to leave behind lifelong friends. But he was soon captivated by the mountains, rivers and streams — a 180-degree change from the Texas panhandle — and remembers inviting a beautiful classmate to the junior-senior dance.

FE AT UR E PROFILE Dwain then started dating another young woman his senior year of high school. After graduating in 1952, he had planned to play basketball at the University of Arkansas on a scholarship, but that summer he and his girlfriend found out they were expecting.

He knew he couldn’t juggle attending college and supporting a family, so they married in August and moved to Odessa, Texas, to start fresh.

He took a newspaper job in Oklahoma City, where he was paid journeyman’s wages and stayed for six and a half years. He worked in the production area, making the metal plates used on the press.

He also joined the local union and eventually became its president at age 25. Dwain was making $3,000 a year, a salary higher than any of his friends who’d gone to college. He and his wife bought a house and a decent car, and then they bought a better car. They upgraded to a better house – paying $13,400. Both making money and saving money, Dwain felt he was finding success.

With $6,500 in savings, he and his wife decided to return to Arkansas. Her dad owned restaurants in Fayetteville and Springdale, and they opened one too. For various reasons, their business didn’t succeed, and they started going broke. Dwain sold off the equipment in piecemeal fashion and had around $2,000 left.

By then, they had three children — Mike, Jeff and Kristy — and Dwain didn’t want to return to newspapers. So, he answered a newspaper ad for a job with a plywood company based in Phoenix, Arizona, that was putting in a new business in Springdale. Gateway Plywood and Door Company was a division of International Forest Products, and they sought someone with a salesman’s approach.

Dwain spent three years there in sales, three years as manager and three years heading operations – also over the Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Dallas stores. He founded Industrial Leasing and after two years brought on the late Jim Cypert as a partner. They ran the company together for about 25 years, operating commercial warehouses, until Jim bought him out.

Finding Success in the Lumber Business Soon, Dwain built their family a nice, nearly 2,000-square-foot house in west Springdale, with a double-car garage, two full baths and a big backyard deck. After 12 years there, they built a bigger house in east Springdale, close to the lake.

Even with his career success — and maybe partly because of it — Dwain’s marriage was unraveling.

Their divorce lasted three years.

Their son, Mike, who had started classes at the University of Arkansas, eventually got involved with drugs, and the habit persisted for years.

Tragically, Mike took his own life in his early 30s.

In his career, Dwain left the plywood company and founded National Window Company in Springdale in 1972, which later evolved into National Home Centers. He opened a Fort Smith location in 1977, naming Danny Funderburg as general manager – who later became president and COO. With Dwain as founder and chief executive officer, the company focused on sales to professional builders and contractors.

With his company doing well, Dwain was ready to take another gamble, and he called the former Glenda Hanby and asked her on a lunch date. He and his ex-wife and Glenda and her late husband had played bridge together, but were just casual friends. They soon became inseparable, married in December 1979 and went on to enjoy a wonderful partnership for four-plus decades. He also happily gained two bonus sons, Blake and Brent Hanby, who were 12 and 14 at the time.

Glenda had grown up in Crossett, and after graduating high school, she became Arkansas State Forestry Queen in 1960 and traveled the state for the next year promoting the timber industry. She also attended the University of Arkansas.

When they got together, Glenda was a founding partner in The Designer’s Touch, a boutique interior design firm, with her friends, Betty Bailey, Carol Lynn Gibson and the late Conjie Williams.

She served as corporate executive assistant and vice president. She also managed the company’s contractor incentive travel program for over 30 years, taking customers to destinations all over the world, including Costa del Sol in Spain; Geneva, Switzerland; the French Riviera; Vienna, Austria; Germany and Alaska.

His stepson Brent eventually became the company’s chief financial officer, and his son Jeff became the senior merchandise manager. Dwain served as president of the National Association of Home Centers, which included several hundred lumber dealers. He poured himself into the company, creating a handbook for every area. “I was interested in people. I treated customers good. I treated employees good,” he said.

In 1993, the company became publicly held, raising $20 million in capital to open new stores and compete with Home Depot and Lowe’s as they entered local markets. In 1998, the company sold the Fayetteville store to Home Depot and the Rogers store to Lowe’s. The company returned to private ownership in 2001. Over time, National Home Centers became the largest contractor supply in Arkansas selling to builders – with 13 locations, around 320 trucks and 180 forklifts, and more than 1,350 employees.

At its pinnacle of success, the company ranked No. 31 among private companies in Arkansas in 2006, earning a revenue of $273.1 million that year. Dwain had weathered several recessions over the decades, but the Great Recession from 2006 to 2010 proved to be the biggest challenge. About 1,100 lumber yards closed across the country. When Dwain was 76, they decided to sell National Home Centers to Stock Building Supply, a North Carolina-based company, in April 2010.

Throughout his 38 years of running the familycontrolled company, Dwain still found time to give back to his community. He volunteered his leadership for several organizations, and at a young age co-chaired Springdale United Methodist Church’s building capital campaign and its construction committee. He later founded the church’s foundation, becoming its first chairman.

Builder’s Association, Springdale Jaycees, the Springdale Variance Board and the Springdale Planning Commission – making it no surprise when he was awarded the Springdale Chamber’s Civic Service Award.

Enjoying Retirement at BTV After selling the company, Dwain and Glenda visited Butterfield Trail Village to explore the living options.

Longtime friend Marge Branch encouraged them to became Carriage Club members, and they made plans to eventually move into an apartment. They wanted to relieve their children from worrying about their care in their later years.

In 2016, they moved into their spacious apartment that’s filled with paintings and photographs from travels, along with family portraits and snapshots. Glenda had asked him how he’d spend his free time in retirement, and he said he’d decided to get more involved in the stock market. He made his first stock option purchase that year and still enjoys actively managing investments.

Getting into her car after playing bridge, Glenda fell and shattered her knee in 2018. Subsequent visits to the doctor over five years led to the discovery that her body was riddled with cancer. She died within two weeks of the cancer diagnosis. Dwain feels lost without Glenda and misses her terribly, especially the daily companionship and conversations with her sitting next to him in their living room recliners. “She was totally devoted to me, and I was totally devoted to her. And I think she got shortchanged quite a bit,” he said.

These days, he stays actively engaged with his many friends and some former employees who also live at BTV. He often joins friends for dinner in the dining room or watches televised Razorback games with them. He also enjoys attending Razorback games, like a recent women’s basketball game, with his and Glenda’s children and grandchildren. He regularly makes calls to family and friends, including his daughter Kristy, who raises miniature horses in Grand View, Texas; his younger sister in Springdale; and his former daughter-in-law, now honorary daughter, Michelle Hanby. He will always treasure his many lifelong relationships.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Blauvelt, New York, a village 20 miles north of New York City but, when I moved to Fayetteville in 1973, immediately felt at home. I lived here for 45 years until six years ago when I returned to my hometown to be my dad’s companion. He passed away in June 2024, 19 days shy of his 100th birthday.

What did you do before retirement?

For 20 years, I worked in the field of child development serving in different positions – preschool teacher, day care director and trainer/consultant. My last position was at the University of Arkansas, where I was an instructor of Child Development and Director of the Laboratory Nursery School. I retired early to “shepherd” my children through adolescence.

Do you have children and grandchildren?

I have two children. My son, Nick, works for the State Department and he, along with his wife, Emily, and two children, Charlie and Anna, currently live in Helsinki, Finland. My daughter, Hillary, lives in Fayetteville with her Weimaraner rescue, Rocky, and works as a therapist at Central Junior High in Springdale.

Randi Sergent Where Compassion Meets Creativity

For anyone who has recently spent time as a resident or guest in Butterfield’s Health Care Center or Assisted Living cottage, chances are they’ve had the distinct pleasure of encountering Randi Sergent.

Ready with a bright smile, warm conversation and an office door that is almost always open, Randi brings a joyful, steady and thoughtful presence to residents and families through her important role as BTV’s healthcare activity coordinator.

Originally from Colorado Springs and raised in Arkansas, Randi studied health science at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist and licensed sex educator. Her passion for helping others guided her early work as a hospital-based Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – but Randi felt drawn toward finding a role that could blend her need for creativity and human connection while allowing her to make a meaningful impact on others. When she spotted an available activity coordinator job at Butterfield, she knew she had found the right fit and crossed her fingers that the role would become hers.

environment, she believes, plays a key role in the remarkable longevity and vitality that is common among residents throughout the Village.

Hired in early summer 2025, Randi immediately embraced becoming a regular part of residents’ lives. She is responsible for developing programs, coordinating activity calendars, keeping the healthcare settings decorated for every season, communicating with families, and — most importantly — building warm individual relationships. “The residents are my favorite part of my job,” she says. “They’re so unique, and their stories are incredible. There’s so much to learn and be inspired by here.” She makes it a daily habit to pop in to visit with each resident, just to say good morning and find out how people are doing.

Residents notice and frequently ask about her when she’s away – a clear indication of how much she is appreciated.

Outside of work, Randi is an avid reader and a nature-loving hiker. She also loves to de-stress by coloring and makes it a top priority to spend time with family – including her three sisters, with whom she is very close. She and her fiancé, Tim, have been a couple since high school and are busy planning a cozy wedding next year at a rustic local venue in Cave Springs. A casual conversation recently revealed that one of the residents she supports is a former wedding coordinator, which has landed Randi an enthusiastic, knowledgeable advisor full of great ideas for planning the perfect day.

Randi finds continuous inspiration from the strong sense of community at BTV. “It feels like a small town,” she explains. “Everyone knows each other – residents, staff and even family members. People always notice if you’re having an off day, and they genuinely care.” This supportive, close-knit 10 BUTTERFIELD LIFE

Randi’s days are filled with variety, requiring quick thinking and time management, as well as loads of energy, creativity and resourcefulness. She strives to design activities that can accommodate a wide range of needs and abilities, adjusting plans on the fly and adapting to find ways to make each resident feel included and engaged. “I always think, ‘What would I want for my own grandmother?’ Picturing her in my mind helps keep me grounded and focused on what matters most,” she says.

Still in her early 20s, Randi is grateful for the opportunity to gain valuable experience through the examples of her colleagues and the precious time she spends with residents. Looking years ahead, she hopes to grow professionally – with a goal of serving in a director-level healthcare role someday. Randi is quick to say, however, that her work of planning special activities that bring joy to residents in a community that feels like home…is already a dream come true.

BTV Stage Series Presents: Bárbara Padilla in Concert Mexican-American operatic soprano Bárbara Padilla is back at BTV to once again grace the Performance Hall stage with a magical concert filled with beauty and emotion. Ms. Padilla became a household name for unforgettable performances that earned her First Runner Up on America’s Got Talent, described by judge Piers Morgan as “…the single greatest vocal performance we’ve ever had...” Ms. Padilla has performed with multi-Grammy Award-winning professionals like David Foster, Juan Gabriel, Raul Di Blasio, Fernando De La Mora, Chris Botti and more. A cancer survivor, she hails from Guadalajara, Mexico and now resides in Northwest Arkansas. Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution – A 12-Lecture Course

“We’ve moved so far away from the Constitution that in many ways, we don’t even recognize it. We think we are becoming more advanced by abandoning the Constitution and adopting something like an administrative state, but in fact, we are becoming more primitive and regressing. The people who make the laws are people. How do we know they won’t make them in their own interest?” asked political professor Thomas G. West of Hillsdale College, Michigan.

The Cherokee Maidens share a Native American heritage, love for old dogs, spicy Tex-Mex, crocheted pillowcases and harmonic melodies. Jennifer Pettersen, the Pride of the Prairie Rose, teams up with Okie songbird Monica Taylor and Bartlett Arboretum steward Robin Macy to create a distinctive sound that harkens to another era. Think Bob Wills meets the Andrews Sisters! Each one a songwriter with acclaimed recordings, Taylor has been featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion and Pettersen’s music videos have garnered more than 10,000 hits online.

But their unique timbre and shared passion for the past sets them apart from the pack and unites them as a tribe of musical talent.

They are currently recording a long-awaited debut release with their western combo band, Sycamore Swing.

The U.S. Constitution, designed to secure the natural rights proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence, was ratified in 1787 and remains the most enduring, successful constitution in history. Examine the political theory of the American Founding and later challenges to that theory.

Topics include: the natural rights theory of the Founding, the meaning of the Declaration and the Constitution, the Civil War crisis, the Progressive rejection of the Founding, and the nature and form of modern liberalism. Hillsdale College faculty members will lead the lectures; course notes are provided.

Dwain Newman’s Apartment To visit Dwain Newman's apartment is to experience a living space affectionately referred to as a “unicorn” at Butterfield. This one-time, one-of-a-kind residence was the result of merging combined apartments several years ago, creating a completely unique floor plan. Due to its unusual size, Dwain and his late wife, Glenda Newman, were able to fill the apartment with larger scale furnishings.

The apartment showcases an array of art and memorabilia, happy reminders of a lifetime of experiences. Dwain’s love of hosting is evident in a small wetbar ready for cocktail-making.

Four Decades of Home: Butterfield’s Journey Through Resident Eyes

This spring, as Butterfield Trail Village prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the community isn’t accepting the status quo. In anticipation of breaking ground on one of the Village’s most significant expansions — a major addition to the assisted living setting — BTV honors an extraordinary past while keeping a careful eye on future sustainability. Milestones deserve reflection, and two longstanding BTV residents offer uniquely rich perspectives: Rick Meyer, a resident of nearly 19 years, and June Colwell, who has called Butterfield home for 31 years. Though their paths to Butterfield were different, their stories intertwine to create a portrait of a place that has grown, adapted and thrived throughout its existence.

Arriving at Butterfield Rick Meyer’s connection to Butterfield began long before he moved in. “My parents were here eighteen months after it opened,” he recalls. Following a remarkable career spanning biological sciences, environmental research and university leadership, Rick and his wife, Mary, returned to Arkansas after years of living in Oregon and North Carolina.

Already knowledgeable about the continuing care retirement community (CCRC) model, Butterfield felt like the right fit. The couple was intrigued to come to a place that was still growing, still taking shape. “We were excited to come from a mature gated community to a developing one,” he says.

“We got to see and be part of the maturation.”

June Colwell arrived to live in the Village at just 59 — very young by Butterfield standards — after her older husband, Philip, recognized his diagnosis of Hodgkin’s disease would necessitate moving to a senior community that could support their eventual needs. Her mother-in-law had lived in the Village for a decade, and June had spent lots of time visiting and helping her move. “Butterfield wasn’t a shock to me,” she smiles. “It was just another step in my life.” Still, it felt strange at first. “I think the average age was about 83. They looked at me like, ‘Who “I just hope [BTV] is this youngster?’”

But neighbors quickly keeps thriving welcomed her with like it is. I can’t warmth — muffins imagine wanting brought to the doorstep, anything more.” friendly conversations — June Colwell and she soon “fell in love with this place.”

First Impressions and Future Growth Looking back, June vividly remembers an elegant Butterfield in the early ’90s. “The dining room was gorgeous,” she says. “Beautiful tables, potted trees…

when you walked in, it felt like California.” She recalls a time when resources felt more limited, but residents took real pride in their surroundings. Rick’s first impression was different, shaped more by his planner’s eye. “At first, I thought the main building looked like a dated Holiday Inn,” he says, laughing.

But he noticed small changes over time — lighting, new rugs, brighter colors — transforming not just the look of the space, but also enhancing the mood and social energy that buzzed within it.

“People went from just sitting quietly to enjoying themselves so much we had to add sound panels!”

Over the decades, Rick and June have witnessed many stages of Butterfield’s physical evolution. Village Homes emerged where cows once grazed.

New roads were paved, June Colwell and utilities stretched to the far corners of the property. The Lodge took shape, and extended Healthcare and Special Care wings were created.

The main building grew to include a grand portecochère, a spacious new common area, the Bistro and a state-of-the-art performance hall.

Rick served on the board of directors during key expansions of the Healthcare Center, helping guide the shift from the old Alzheimer’s Wing to a broader Special Care model. Met with initial concerns that Alzheimer’s patients would be left behind with the changes, he and others worked to explain that the new direction would be an improvement. “It wasn’t

abandoning anyone,” he says. “It was an expansion.”

Relief followed resident uncertainty as education helped show how much more inclusive and supportive the updated approach would be.

June recalls that the eventual expansion of the healthcare space was very personal for her. When her mother-in-law's health eventually required full-time nursing care, there weren’t enough beds available at Butterfield. She had to be temporarily placed off campus in another facility until space opened up at the Village. “We can’t have that happen again,” she says. “We needed to grow.”

Life at Butterfield: The Joy of Programs and People If buildings showcase Butterfield’s growth, programs reveal its spirit. June’s memories fondly trace that evolution. “When I came, there weren’t big budgets, so we made our own fun.” She became the unofficial ukulele player for horse-drawn hayrides, leading residents in singing old favorites as they rode around the loop perched on hay bales. She and a neighbor organized lobby sing-alongs, and a Greek resident taught a few ladies the Sirtaki, a traditional line dance – resulting in a high-spirited group winding through the dining room in blue and white costumes. June’s deep friendship with Director of Programs and Events Riki Stamps spans many years. “She turned this program around,” June says. “I don’t know what we’d have done without her.” June has always embraced Butterfield’s vibrant social offerings, cheering Riki on as she has ushered in everything from themed evenings to international travel programs. “We went from hayrides to plane rides,” June laughs.

Rick helped elevate Butterfield’s cultural offerings from another angle – quite literally, center stage. His wife, Mary, was a skilled concert pianist with a great understanding of what a top-notch piano’s voice should sound like. Rick joined a small group to help select the performance hall’s grand piano, now used by outstanding guest artists. He also recognized the importance of having an acoustical engineer directly involved as the performance hall was built, resulting in the impressive sound quality that makes the space so exceptional today. “World-class musicians are always surprised by what they find here,” he notes.

A Commitment to Care Healthcare and its evolution over the years, both residents emphasize, is central to Butterfield’s identity. Rick describes the arrival of the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences (UAMS) Internal Medicine Clinic at BTV as “transformational.” He says, “Residents no longer have to wait weeks for outside appointments. They get help when they need it. The continuity of care is remarkable.”

June’s view of healthcare is directly shaped through the lens of lived experience. As her husband Philip’s health declined and the challenges of care became overwhelming, it became necessary for him to transition to the Health Care Center. The relief of knowing her husband could receive the Rick Meyer support he needed just steps away from their cottage was enormous. “It was a comfort to know he was close,” she says. Her understanding of the essential nature of a full continuum of care is the basis of her belief that Butterfield’s future expansion of the assisted living environment is so important.

Why Butterfield Thrives For both, the answer is simple: Butterfield grows with intention. It adapts without losing its heart.

Word of mouth and reputation remain all-powerful.

Staff commitment and skills matter. And while physical spaces are important, the residents themselves are who shape the culture. “The people who live here keep us strong,” June says. “It’s just comforting to know you’re here for life.” Rick adds, “Discovery and change are part of the excitement of life.” In his view, Butterfield’s resilience comes from its willingness to innovate – whether in healthcare, programs or strategizing what will meet the needs of future retirees.

Rick believes technology will define Butterfield’s next chapter, impacting everything from transportation to communication to healthcare. “We live in a dynamic world,” he says. “You’re behind the moment you stop moving forward.” June, now 90, offers a simpler wish: “I just hope it keeps thriving like it is. I can’t imagine wanting anything more.”

Rick and June’s stories — one analytical, one heartfelt — reflect the arc of the Village’s history.

Through four decades of change, it has steadfastly remained what both residents cherish most: a place where people feel connected, supported and at home. And, if the past is any indication, Butterfield’s future is bright – grown from modest roots into a thriving, forward-thinking place without ever losing the warmth, humor and humanity that define it. Their observations illuminate a simple truth: Butterfield thrives because its people do.

The SoNA Season Continues with Timeless Melodies and Sweeping Orchestral Soundscapes

Performing under the baton of Guest Conductor Akiko Fujimoto, and fresh on the heels of three soldout shows in December, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA) continues its 2025-26 mainstage season with Across the Silk Road: Scheherazade on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Walton Arts Center. And then on Saturday, March 7, the season concludes with Behind the Mask: Romeo and Juliet, featuring Guest Conductor Tamara Dworetz.

With SoNA’s longtime music director concluding his tenure last spring, the orchestra has been embarking on a bold new season of discovery featuring six different guest conductors – four of whom are finalists to become the organization’s next artistic leader, including Fujimoto and Dworetz.

“We are officially halfway through our search for a new music director, a process that has made for a very unique and exciting season,” says Ben Harris, SoNA Executive Director. “It has been fascinating to see and hear how the different guest conductors are able to bring out a variety of textures and colors from the ensemble, and it is inspiring to see our amazing orchestra consistently playing at the outstanding level we have come to expect from them – regardless of who is on the podium.

Throughout the process our audience has been with us every step of the way, cheering us on (literally!) and providing invaluable post-concert feedback. We are looking forward to working with our next two candidates, Akiko Fujimoto and Tamara Dworetz, and we are eager to find a new artistic leader for our organization!”

For Across the Silk Road on Jan. 31, audiences are invited to experience orchestral storytelling at its best as Fujimoto leads a thrilling lineup inspired by stories, landscapes, and legends from across Asia and the Middle East. The journey begins with Mozart’s sparkling Overture to the Abduction from the Seraglio, followed by Alexander Borodin’s windswept In the Steppes of Central Asia and Maurice Ravel’s enchanted Mother Goose, before closing with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s hypnotic Scheherazade.

“Every time I come to Northwest Arkansas, I’m struck not just by the stunning scenery, but by the creative energy and global curiosity of the people who live here,” says Akiko Fujimoto. “That spirit inspired me to put together Across the Silk Road – a program full of vivid stories, colorful sounds, and musical adventures across cultures, culminating in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, inspired by the legendary storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights (also known as Arabian Nights).”

Following the January performance, the season will conclude on March 7 with Behind the Mask: Romeo and Juliet, as Dworetz leads a program that explores the drama and romance of masked identities, featuring Prokofiev’s epic Romeo and Juliet – performed alongside Antonin Dvořák’s exuberant Carnival Overture, Carl Nielsen’s playful Maskarade Overture, Anna Clyne’s kinetic Masquerade, and Aram Khachaturian’s opulent Masquerade Suite: Waltz & Galop.

Don’t Drink and Dance Here!

By Sandra Cox Birchfield, Shiloh Museum of Ozark History In 1936, three years after Prohibition was repealed, Fayetteville leaders were tasked to control what they deemed unsavory for a college town.

dividing the building where a bar was on one side and a dance hall on the other, each with separate entrances and no connecting door.

Fayetteville functioned this way for more than 30 years. Then, Fayetteville switched to a city manager form of government, a ripe time for operators of the Huddle Club on North College Avenue to request an ordinance change. In 1967, city directors agreed to allow drinking and dancing under the same roof, though it came with a price: nightclubs were required to obtain a city permit annually for $400 (nearly $4,000 today) for the privilege.

Little Rock already had the answer. Its city council adopted an ordinance banning alcohol consumption anywhere dancing took place. If it was good enough for Little Rock, it was certainly fine with the Fayetteville City Council. It, too, became the law on The Hill.

But that didn’t mean University of Arkansas students and the general public were lacking a place where they could legally whoop it up. All they had to do was look slightly beyond the Fayetteville city limits to the roadhouses along U.S. 71.

South of town was the Rockwood Club and Tee Table, the latter of which offered a golf driving and archery range. North of town was the Bubble Club, across from today’s Fiesta Square shopping center.

Located at today’s Township Street and North College Avenue, Club Razorback offered beer and dancing without repercussions.

That is, until it was annexed by Fayetteville. Ordered to stop the drinking and dancing, the club owner responded by building a wall through the club’s center,

Clubs with bars and dancing popped up everywhere. The Library Club on Dickson Street enabled students to honestly tell their parents they were at “The Library” all evening, and they were a stone’s throw from another nightclub, the Swingin’ Door. In the 1970s and 1980s, people could go to the Old Post Office on the Fayetteville square to practice their Saturday Night Fever moves, and country music lovers headed to the Y’all Come Back Saloon.

Today, nightclubs line Dickson Street. This stretch is now an entertainment district and tourist attraction, all made possible through a 1967 city ordinance.

HUDDLE CLUB NOVEMBER 1967 This 1967 advertisement for the Huddle Club clearly notes “dancing nightly” and “ice cold beer” with the caveat that its customers are “well behaved.” The club placed the ad shortly after the Fayetteville City Council adopted an ordinance allowing alcohol sales and dancing in the same venues – a practice that had been illegal in the city for decades.

Breathe Better, Live Stronger New Wellness Practice Coming to BTV Wellness is ever evolving at Butterfield Trail Village as new scientific research continues to teach us more about our bodies. The coming year will offer residents the opportunity to incorporate a new active layer of support into their daily routines: healthy, intentional breathing.

Encouragingly, studies now show that simple, guided breathing practices can help reverse many of these patterns, often with impressive improvements in dayto-day wellbeing.

Recent training completed by BTV Wellness Director Jennifer Neill is the foundation for the launch of a research-based, easy-to-learn breathing method to enhance the Village’s robust fitness programming. Jennifer recently earned certification in the Oxygen Advantage approach, a program that focuses on strengthening the diaphragm, improving oxygen efficiency and calming the nervous system. She also participated in a workshop with James Nestor, author of Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, whose work has become widely recognized for highlighting how proper breathing can transform overall health.

This winter, residents will have the chance to learn more during a community presentation on the science and benefits of healthy breathing. The session, scheduled for January 29 at 2:30pm, will explore how thoughtful breathwork can:

Beginning this winter, subtle but impactful breath-focused instruction will be woven into the fabric of every fitness class at BTV: • Pilates and Yoga will introduce techniques for strengthening the diaphragm, enhancing ribcage mobility, and calming the mind.

• Tai Chi will incorporate gentle breath practices that support balance and fluid movement.

• Get Fit with Jennifer will include breathing strategies designed to build endurance and make movement feel easier and more efficient.
