Hey everyone, My name is Elan ( ‫) ئیالن‬, and I’m from Slemani. I’m currently a third-year medical student at the University of Duhok. In addition to my studies, I’m part of the publication team as a content creator for this term and the question I get asked often is, “What do you even do??” The answer is simple: I create content! Whether it’s crafting captions, writing paragraphs, or translating and proofreading texts in Sorani, English, and Badini, I’m here to help. I also support our LPD by managing an image library for all our projects.

I applied for this role because I thought it would involve taking pictures—something I’m passionate about. Capturing moments when people are just being themselves, not posing for the camera, is what I love most. There’s something special about freezing everyday moments in time. My love for photography started in tenth grade during a trip to Rojhalat, where everything was new to me, and I started capturing every little detail. I’ve kept that habit, always noticing and photographing the world around me and Since arriving in Duhok, the city’s beauty has inspired me even more. There’s so much to appreciate—the unique neighborhoods, the writings on the walls, and the sight of older men in traditional Kurdish clothes, enjoying a quiet tea. I find myself constantly reaching for my camera to capture these moments that make this place feels like home.

One last thing that might surprise you: my favorite color is orange. I’ve loved it since childhood, and it still makes me happy every time I see it. It’s simply a color that radiates joy, and I will not hear anyone who says otherwise!!

Hello, my name is Talan Mustafa Sardar, and I am currently a fourth-year medical student at Hawler Medical University. For the 2024–2025 term, I have taken on the role of a content creator and a member of the publication team.

These responsibilities allow me to combine my passion for medicine with my interest in sharing knowledge and creating meaningful content. As part of the publication team, I contribute to developing and reviewing materials that aim to educate and inform both students and professionals in the medical field. My focus is on ensuring that the content we produce is accurate, clear, and relevant to our audience.

This involves researching topics, editing articles, and collaborating with peers to deliver highquality work.

In my role as a content creator, I strive to simplify complex medical topics and present them in a way that is easy to understand and engaging.

Whether it’s through written articles, infographics, or other formats, my goal is to make medical knowledge more accessible to others. I believe that effective communication is key to bridging the gap between medical theory and its practical application, and I aim to contribute to this through my work.

My name is Kurdo Bestwn Nadhim, and I’m a second-year medical student at Kurdistan University in Hawler. It’s a pleasure to introduce myself to this amazing community!

Ever since I started medical school, I’ve been fascinated by how complex and incredible the human body is. But beyond just learning medicine, I’ve realized that being a doctor isn’t just about diagnosing and treating—it’s also about understanding people, their struggles, and the bigger picture of health in society. That’s why I’m always looking for opportunities to get involved beyond the classroom.

One of my biggest passions is writing and content creation. I’ve worked with organizations like ‘Youth Group’ and my high school team, ‘Spark,’ where I edited and wrote articles. I love the idea of using words to inform, inspire, and even challenge people’s thinking. Recently, I applied for a content creator and translator position at a medical organization because I want to help make medical information more accessible to everyone.

Outside of my studies, I enjoy exploring new places and hitting the gym—it’s my way of staying sane amidst all the stress! And if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a professional procrastinator (but somehow, I always manage to get things done in the end).

I’m really excited to be part of IFMSA-Kurdistan, and I can’t wait to meet and collaborate with so many passionate and driven people. Looking forward to learning, growing, and making a difference together.!

Hey everyone, I’m Malak Zuhair, a 2nd-year medical student at HMU. It’s exciting how we put our hearts into each newsletter, and now it’s our turn to be part of it!

Honestly, I can’t remember exactly when I became a graphic designer, but what I do know is that I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. When I was four years old, I would wake up voluntarily at 7 or 8 AM before kindergarten, grab my grandpa’s read newspapers, and I’d cut them into shapes plus design and color them (I was obsessed with glitter—sorry mom), and then stick them back onto the newspaper ( it was messy but a cute collage I promise).

After my newspapers phase, I got upgraded into coloring books, then actual sketchbooks, and finally, canvas (a proud moment). In 6th grade, I even painted something for my science fair, and it ended up in the chemistry lab (prouder moment).

Speaking of school, weird to say but my biggest obsession wasn’t art, since nobody was ever qualified to teach, it was always math and physics- now you might ask how did that turn into medicine then, paediatrics oncology is the answer.

For a while, I left art, and sure, the spark was gone. But during quarantine, it came back stronger than ever. Not only did I take painting more seriously, but I also discovered graphic design. And now I remember exactly when I fell in love with it!

I truly do my role with passion because that’s how we showcase IFMSA-Kurdistan to the world- and that's a responsibility I take with pride.

Malak Zuhair Graphic Designer My biggest supporters? My parents and brother. They take the title supporters since day 1 very seriously—our house practically feels like a gallery. Years later, here I am: balancing medicine, IFMSA-Kurdistan, and graphic design all in one! My heart is so full of gratitude since we have the best PCSDD and team for the term, even though we sometimes get exhausted, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Oh, and a cool fact about me—I’m obsessed with building miniature houses and legos. I once built a 4,000-piece set ( my favourite gifts to receive, just saying) This probably gave you an idea about me, I hope you love each issue as much as we do!

Hello everyone, my name is Arblina Adeeb and I’m a third year medical student at Hawler Medical University. I am currently one of the graphic designers in the publication team and my journey started at first as an LPD. While working as the LPD, I realized that I really enjoyed making the designs and publications and I wasn’t ready yet to let go of the position. That’s why I decided next to go for being a graphic designer where I can still have fun with the designs minus the stress part.

Being part of the publication team for two years now really puts things into perspective for me. I realized that we run things silently in the background in order for every project to go smoothly. Ranging from the social media infographics to the printed leaflets, no project is complete without our work.

In my free time, if i’m not studying for an exam or working on canva, I love spending time with my friends and family in cafes or going on picnics.

Spring has to be my favorite season because I get to relax and reconnect with nature after the being locked up in the house studying. I love discovering new novels to read whenever I have the time and I set a goal every year to finish a certain amount of books (I have completed my goal maybe once). I had a crisis when I realized I have watched over 400 movies and only read around 200 books because I made it my whole personality in high school that I read a lot of books. Either ways I find it fun to keep track of the books and movies I have read and watched because it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

That being said, I am really grateful for the opportunities IFMSA has given me. I got to meet people and make friends while being part of many impactful projects. It also gave me the chance to explore my creative side in designing and contributing to the projects in my own way.

Hello everyone! My name is Hiro Sarbast, and I am a third-year medical student at Hawler Medical University and the social media manager for Hawler and Koya. I am 21 years old and originally from Rojava (Qamislo), but I moved to Erbil in 2011 and have been living here for 14 years.

I am the oldest of five kids and enjoy listening to songs, baking, as well as learning new languages. I graduated from the Classical School of The Medes and was second In my grade. I was one of those students who had a different field in mind but ended up in medicine. However, from the moment I started studying medicine I fell in love with the field and enjoyed every second of it.

I enjoy being a medical student even with its challenges. I love learning something new every day and it brings me joy to know that one day I will be able to help save lives with the knowledge I am gaining now.

My journey with IFMSA-Kurdistan started when I heard about it as a first-year medical student in 2022 and loved all the opportunities they provided for students and decided to join. This year I applied for the social media manager position and have been doing it for four months now. This has been an opportunity for me to help make our posts more interesting and pleasing to our viewers and has helped me discover new skills. IFMSA-Kurdistan has provided me with so many opportunities to improve my knowledge and help others around me especially in areas the university was not able to such as joining surgeries, learning practical skills, and helping our community, among many other activities. I recommend all medical students to join IFMSA-Kurdistan as it will provide you with many important projects that will help you grow as a medical student.

A few things I’m passionate about: Art— I’m fascinated by art history and movements, and I absolutely LOVE to paint. Reading is another one of my biggest joys; I’m especially drawn to classics and philosophy, with Sylvia Plath and Jane Austen as my ultimate literary icons. I’m also a movie enthusiast—my favorite genres are drama, romance, and thrillers. I’ve watched over 500 films and fully intend to reach 1,000 someday!

Deemah Ahmed-Khalis Social media manager Halaw habayeb :) My name is Deemah, and I’m one of the social media managers for IFMSAKurdistan, a position that suits me perfectly because I am both creative and chronically online. Oh, and let’s not forget, I’m also a third-year medical student at the University of Duhok.

I was born in Iraq’s cultural heart, Baghdad, but I was raised in the beautiful city of the mountains, Duhok.

I’m also a devoted cat mom, tending to and loving my spoiled brat Misha.

I also love to embrace my girly side, I adore the color pink, makeup, and fashion. Some might even call me a coquette.

When it comes to music, my favorite genres are indie, alternative, and R&B. And of course, my favorite artist is mother, A.K.A Lana Del Rey. Unpopular opinion, but classical music is just darling.

It completely transports you to another world, perfect for people who are whimsical like myself. My favorite composers are the geniuses Debussy, Piero piccioni, and the legend Tchaikovsky. And honestly, my love for Tchaikovsky is what got me into ballet, and my biggest dream is being able to attend a ballet show one day. One of my figs is becoming a ballerina(Sylvia Plath reference IYKYK).

As for my goals, I have two big ones: first, to become a successful doctor, and second, to travel the world. Life’s too short not to romanticize it a little, right? So here’s to art, to music, to dreams that feel too big, and to all the places I’ve yet to see.

Hello everyone, My name is Raviya, but I appreciate everyone who calls me Ravi. I’m a fourth-year medical student at the University of Sulaimani-College of Medicine.

Medicine, while challenging and sometimes overwhelming, is something I truly enjoy. There are moments when it feels like a lot to handle, but with the right people by our side, it becomes more manageable and even enjoyable. Among all its fields, neuroscience has all of my heart.

For this term, I’m one of the social media managers of IFMSA Kurdistan. I took on this role because I love organizing and designing, and I enjoy making things clear and well-structured. It’s a role that fits me well, allowing me to stay creative while working in an exciting environment.

Outside of my academics, I truly love many things.

I’m a calm and quiet person, and I find comfort in writing, it’s something that has always felt like home to me. I love literature and poetry; there’s something special about how words can capture emotions and thoughts in a way nothing else can.

Whether its reading or writing, I always appreciate the power of language. I also do sketches in my free time, drawing anything that catches my eye.

I really enjoy watching football too, especially Real Madrid matches, and I’m a big fan of tennis. I have a soft spot for mysteries, maybe that’s why I’m such a big fan of Sherlock Holmes. Sometimes, I even joke about being ‘Miss Sherlock.’ I also love spending time with kids; their energy and curiosity always bring me joy.

Hey there, I am Lina, one of the video editors for IFMSA-Kurdistan. I am from Slemani and I am twenty years old.

I have experienced life for almost a little of over two decades, and one of the significant things I have discovered is my passion for editing. It thrills me knowing I can contribute the skills I have acquired through a simple and fun hobby to this organization. Skills that have gently evolved over many years of simply doing a hobby out of devotion to one main thing—having fun.

I try to be creative by snapping frames in time and editing them as proof of me living that moment for later nostalgia. I like to lighten moods with occasional jokes and strive to put a smile on my closed one’s faces.

I prefer summers; the sun shining strongly making my shadow’s silhouette shorter and sharper. I observe and interpret life simply; I have lived a simple life as everyone else’s lives, which I am grateful for.

I like to feel the process of everything fully. From scratching my knee as a kid to learn to ride a bike, to pricking my finger with a needle when embroidering tiny pearls and beads into fabric as a current adult. I find joy in such simple stuff, doing things that slows down life and lets me experience the present to the utmost best. I am not picky. I like lots of different foods and listen to a variety of music genres. I like to experience all things equally. To see everything, feel anything, and hold myself back from nothing, is what I am keen on doing in life.

Greetings, everyone! My name is Mina, and I am a second-year medical student at Hawler Medical University. I’m 19 years old and passionate about both medicine and creativity. While my academic journey keeps me busy, I always find time for the things that bring me joy, like making and eating sweets, listening to Miami Band, and spending quality time with family and friends. These little joys help me stay balanced and motivated.

Beyond my studies, I am an active member of IFMSA-Kurdistan, where I currently have a role as a video editor on the publication team. I’ve always loved creative work, and this role allows me to merge my passion for storytelling with visual communication.

Whether it’s editing short videos, designing story highlights, or creating engaging content, I love the process of turning ideas into something meaningful.

I joined IFMSA in the 2023/2024 term and quickly fell in love with the community. One of my first major projects was being part of the organizing committee for the International Research Summit in August, which was an incredible learning experience.

When I applied for the video editor position, I was both nervous and excited. I wasn’t sure what to expect during the interview, but getting accepted was a moment of relief and excitement. The publication team is one of the best teams in IFMSA, filled with talented, supportive people who make every project enjoyable.

In my free time, I have a deep love for baking.

I find joy in experimenting with new recipes and sharing delicious treats with those around me.

Mina Mohammad Video Editor There’s something truly special about seeing people enjoy something I’ve made it’s a small but meaningful way to bring happiness to others. Baking, much like video editing, allows me to express my creativity in a unique way.

Balancing medicine with my personal interests has been an essential part of my growth. Studying medicine challenges me to think critically, solve complex problems, and push my limits. At the same time, my creative hobbies provide an outlet for relaxation and self-expression. I believe that finding this balance is what keeps me motivated and inspired, both academically and personally.

I look forward to continuing my journey, learning, growing, and contributing in every way I can. IFMSA has given me an amazing platform to develop my skills and be part of something bigger, and I’m excited to see what the future holds!

Outside of my medical studies and IFMSA activities, I enjoy a variety of hobbies, including gaming, reading, chess, traveling, and playing sports like football, volleyball, and tennis. Football, in particular, is a passion of mine—I play 2-3 games every week, as it helps me relieve stress and stay energized.

I’m also an avid Barcelona fan, and one of my favorite matches was the 2017 El Clásico, where Barcelona won 3-2 with Messi scoring a last-minute goal. Through football and gaming, I’ve built strong connections with friends and formed new bonds with people who share similar interests.

Mohammed Karim Video Editor Hello! My name is Mohammed, a 4th-year medical student at Sulaymaniyah University.

I was born and raised in Sulaymaniyah, a city that has shaped my values and aspirations.

My journey with IFMSA began in 2021 during my first year at Duhok University, where I attended an introductory seminar led by Osama Abdulla, the local president at the time. That seminar marked the beginning of my IFMSA journey, which has been filled with incredible experiences, including participating in projects, events, and seminars. One of the highlights was attending the Erbil Spring Camp, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Over the years, I’ve taken on more responsibilities, managing projects as both an assistant and a manager, contributing as an OC member for the 2023 Suli Spring Camp, and recently joining the publication team as a video editor. That’s why you’ve been seeing such great videos this year! ;)

My dream is to become a successful doctor and college tutor, contributing to the advancement of medical sciences in my country through research, public health awareness, and patient care. I also aspire to inspire and teach the next generation of medical professionals, helping them become valuable assets to society. I’m grateful for the opportunities IFMSA has provided me, and I look forward to continuing this journey of growth and impact.

SCOME Duhok LC Dental Club “Suturing Training Program” activity was organized on the 16th of March and focused on helping medical students sharpen their knowledge and skills on surgical sutures.

Hawler LC Breast Ultrasound and Biopsy: was organized on the 2nd and 3rd of March to create an opportunity for medical students to learn more about the diagnosis of breast diseases.

- On the 15th of March, the long-term project “Surgery Series” held a session on Cardiovascular Surgery to provide the opportunity for participants to experience the world of surgical interventions.

Sulaimani LC On the 13th of March, a session of “Phlebotomy, Cannulation and Injection” project was held to aid medical students sharpen their clinical skills.

On the 18th of March the activity “Diagnostic Lab Interpretation” was organized and created an environment for medical students to learn about analyzing and interpreting diagnostic investigations.

SCOME Zakho LC The long-term project “Surgery Series” continued on the 12th of March with an ENT surgery.

The long-term project “Experience a Specialty” continued with a session on the 18th of March by providing an opportunity for medical students to spend a day with a haematologist.

SCOPH Duhok LC Ramadan health awareness During the Duhok Ramadan Festival, Duhok LC launched the Ramadan Health Awareness Project, sharing practical tips on healthy fasting.

The project covered balanced eating at Suhoor and Iftar, staying active, recognizing when to break the fast, and the physical and mental benefits of fasting all aimed at promoting a healthier Ramadan.

Hawler LC Ramadan Health series: During the holy month of Ramadan, Hawler LC launched the Ramadan Health Series, a weekly educational campaign aimed at promoting health awareness among the community.

The series featured informative content on a range of relevant topics, including: The benefits of fasting Important circumstances in which breaking the fast is necessary Fasting and healthy eating habits Fasting with chronic illnessesThe transition from Ramadan to Eid This initiative served as a valuable resource to support the community in maintaining their health and well-being during Ramadan.

SCOPH Koya LC Introduction to SCOPH: Koya LC successfully held its first SCOPH meeting, marking an exciting step forward in strengthening public health initiatives within the LC. The meeting brought together members who were eager to learn more about SCOPH’s vision, mission, programs and focus areas.

Attendees had the chance to connect directly with the LPO and the NPO, engage in meaningful discussions, and brainstorm ideas for upcoming SCOPH activities and impactful projects.

Koya LC Leukemia awareness: As part of our cancer program, Koya LC designed and shared an engaging infographic on leukemia, covering its definition, symptoms, risk factors, and prevention.

Zakho LC Ramadan Wellness booth Zakho LC participated in the city’s Ramadan Bazaar with a two-day wellness booth, offering free health checkups including blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI measurements.

Over 1,000 beneficiaries received personalized health tips for a balanced Ramadan and a healthy Eid. The activity was proudly supported by Zakho University – College of Medicine and the Zakho Independent Administration.

The post was followed by a trivia to address common misconceptions and raise awareness.

SCOPH Sulaimani LC Lung Guardians Sulaimani LC launched the Lung Guardians initiative to raise awareness about lung cancer, educating over 300 people on its causes and prevention.

Public outreach took place on March 2nd, 4th, and 5th at Majidi Mall, and on March 13th at Nahri Basic School.

The team also conducted pulse oximeter tests as part of early detection efforts.

Sulaimani LC World Obesity Day To mark World Obesity Day on March 4th, Sulaimani LC shared an eye-catching infographic highlighting the health risks of obesity and ways to prevent it. The campaign focused on raising awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and balanced nutrition.

Sulaimani LC School Health Program As part of their school health efforts, the team visited Nahri Basic School on March 13th. They conducted eye checkups for nearly 60 students and delivered an educational session to around 80 students, focusing on the principles of a healthy lifestyle and daily habits that support long-term wellbeing.

SCORA 1. EmpowerHer conference: In celebration of International Women’s Day, EmpowerHer was held on March 8 in Zakho, bringing together women from the community for workshops on nutrition and mental health. The event featured a session led by a certified nutritionist and a peer-led mental health discussion, creating a safe and interactive space for learning and empowerment. This national project was a joint effort by the Zakho and Duhok LCs, with support from KPSA.

2. Varicocele Awareness Post: On April 8, Zakho LC launched an online awareness campaign about varicocele, aiming to break the stigma surrounding male reproductive health. The post focused on educating the public about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for varicocele, particularly among young men.

The material was shared in Kurdish to ensure accessibility and broader community reach.

IFMSA-Kurdistan is honored to announce its participation in the FEMUR Study (Fracture Evaluation Management & Understanding Research) — a global, prospective cohort study conducted in collaboration with the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and leading international universities, including the University of Birmingham.

This study aims to evaluate the management, morbidity, and mortality outcomes of femur fractures across various healthcare settings worldwide.

Local Involvement: IFMSA-Kurdistan recruited teams of four data collectors from the Duhok, Sulaimani, and Hawler LCs. Data collection was conducted over a 28-day period starting from the first eligible case (March for Duhok & Hawler; April for Sulaimani).

Recognition: All data collectors will be recognized as co-authors in this high-impact international study — an incredible opportunity to contribute to global research and earn authorship in a collaborative academic publication.

SCORE PROtalk Sessions – Bridging Clinical Practice with Research In collaboration with PMSA-Palestine, IFMSAKurdistan hosted a successful three-part PROtalk series focused on research in medicine and surgery, attracting nearly 80 participants.

Sessions Included: Dr. Zaher – Associate Professor, An-Najah National University Topic: “Research Methodology and Building Strong Study Designs” Dr. Yousef Abu Asbeh – Consultant Thoracic Surgeon & Director of Surgical Subspecialties, Al-Quds University Topic: “Why Surgeons Must Also Be Researchers: Balancing the Scalpel and the Pen” Dr. Beesan Maraqa – Head of Research Unit, Hebron University Topic: “Scientific Writing in Medicine: From Research Questions to Published Papers” Organized by: Avin Nyaz, IFMSA-Kurdistan NORE Jwana M.O. Insawi, PMSA NORE This series empowered aspiring researchers by merging academic insight with clinical application — a true celebration of collaborative learning.

SCORP Duhok LC 1. Ramadan Charity Project: A charitable project where participants distributed food supplements to families in need. Duhok LC successfully collected 1,088,000 IQD for the project. This project not only fed families but also brought joy to our members, seeing the impact this project brought in times of spiritual reflection.

2.Anti-Bullying Seminar: A project where IFMSA- Kurdistan Members visited Bright Future Private School for students to participate in an interactive and educational session about bullying. It involved stating the harmful effects of bullying and the importance of empathy and respect among students.

This way, we help create a safe and inclusive school environment. We, as IFMSA-Kurdistan, aim to empower students to stand up against bullying and inspire a culture of kindness and support.

Hawler LC 1.Ramadan of Love: A family’s joy: An exceptional experience where a selected group of members had the opportunity to spend time with a family in need sharing Iftar together and spend a meaningful day with them. Along with food supplies, we brought gifts to the kids and financial support to the family to help make their Ramadan a little brighter.

2. Little Eid wishes and Innocent Smiles: A one of a kind initiative where members came together to spread joy and happiness this Eid. We provided Eid clothes for almost 30 children from underprivileged families, to make sure they celebrate with the same excitement and happiness as every other child.

We came together as a community and shared the joy of Eid with those who need it most.

SCORP 3.Ramadan Blessing Boxes: This was another impactful project during the Holy Month of Ramadan– a time of reflection, compassion and selflessness.

On our continuous quest to support those in need, we donated 50 boxes containing essional supplements and necessities to underprivileged individuals and families who face daily hardship.

Koya LC 1. An online project explaining doctors ’ role in Court: by covering the essential information linking Law to Medicine. It was an insightful online discussion led by a judge, where he talked about the responsibilities, ethical dilemmas, and challenges doctors face in legal settings.

3. Understanding Autism in Children: An online project delved deeper into understanding children with autism and ways of dealing with children with Autism. It was an informative session with active participant engagement where the doctor mentioned early sign detection, interventions, and ways to better support children with autism in their everyday lives.

2.A Ramadan Iftar project : offering a simple and meaningful Iftar to those fasting. It was a project dedicated to sharing the blessings of the Holy Month with all the people around us.

SCORP Sulaimani LC 1. Box of Hope; Grains of hope, meals of love: During the Holy Month of Ramadan, a very heartwarming initiative where our participants prepared food boxes to handout to families in need. Each box provided more than just a meal– it was a symbol of kindness and the power of giving during times where good deeds are doubled.

2. Eid Smiles:New clothes, New smiles: Ramadan was all about giving and in return we only asked God for acceptance and forgiveness.

This project was about bringing joy to underprivileged children by providing them with Eid clothes, making sure they celebrate this special occasion with smiles and dignity.

Members had a great time connecting with the children by helping them pick outfits and made this Eid exceptional.

Zakho LC An infographic done on Women’s Day (March 8th): It explained the meaning, history, and importance of advocating for Women’s Rights. It was a call to action for establishing how far women have come and a recognition of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide.

Dental club The project included five interactive sessions organized by the Duhok Local Committee’s Dental Club and took place during February and early March.

Each session focused on important dental topics and helped students learn both theory and practical skills. Experienced professionals led the sessions, which included hands-on activities, case discussions, and live demonstrations to improve students' clinical abilities.

The first session introduced the dental clinic setup, common tools, infection control, and how to communicate with patients and keep records. The second session covered how to treat cavities, the materials used in fillings, and steps of root canal treatment, as well as how to handle deep tooth decay and infections. The third session was about esthetic dentistry, including smile design, different types of veneers and crowns, and how to plan treatments that improve appearance. The fourth session focused on dental surgery, such as removing impacted teeth, post-surgery care, and practicing how to do stitches. The last session introduced orthodontics, explaining how to diagnose and treat teeth alignment problems using braces, wires, and aligners.

Each session combined theory with practical work to help students build strong clinical skills.

Sports: Medical Support

Sports: Medical Support Duhok LC partnered with Duhok Ultimate and participated in a national frisbee competition as the official medical support team. Prior to the event, the team received thorough training from doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists to prepare for managing various types of injuries and emergencies that could occur during the competition.

Their role was to be present throughout the competition, ensuring player safety by responding promptly to any medical issues or trauma. The team provided first aid, performed rapid assessments, and delivered immediate treatment as needed.

Additionally, other minor injuries involving bleeding were managed by disinfecting and dressing the wounds to promote healing and prevent complications.

This hands-on experience provided the team with a valuable opportunity to apply their medical training in a real-life setting, playing an active role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the athletes throughout the competition.

During the games, they treated several injuries, including a suspected scaphoid fracture, jaw trauma (TMJ), eye injuries, and other minor conditions. In the case of the scaphoid fracture, a detailed clinical examination, combined with the use of a handheld ultrasound device, confirmed the diagnosis.

The affected player was advised to stop playing to prevent further harm, and a cast was applied as the final treatment.

For the eye injury, a careful and thorough examination revealed that no immediate intervention was necessary, though the wound was cleaned to reduce the risk of infection.

IFMSA-Kurdistan Shines in Muscat The 21st Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR21) was held from the 6th to the 10th of February in Muscat, Oman. This annual event brings together National Member Organizations (NMOs) from across the region — and this year, IFMSA-Kurdistan proudly took part once again.

What made this meeting even more special was having members of the IFMSA International Team and two Kurdish students from abroad join us. Together, we stood as one strong voice representing Kurdistan — and we made our presence known.

We were represented by 14 dedicated delegates, who actively participated in Standing Committee sessions, NMO management meetings, and countless other activities. From day one, our team worked hard to connect with fellow medical students and NMOs, building bridges across the region.

This year’s theme was “Global Health and Peace,” and the meeting featured a powerful panel discussion that included a representative from the World Health Organization in Oman.

One of our proudest moments was winning 1st place in the Activities Fair — a recognition of the incredible work and impact our members have made.

Our delegates didn’t just attend sessions; they led them, facilitated discussions, and made sure that IFMSA-Kurdistan’s voice was heard in every room.

Another highlight was the adoption of a new Regional Priority: “Health and Peace in Times of Crisis” — a timely and important focus for our region.

EMR21 was truly an unforgettable experience, and we can’t wait to see what next year brings as we head to Morocco for EMR22!

In the regional plenary, where all major decisions of the region are made, our team voted actively, ensuring our NMO played a part in shaping the future of the region. We also took part in 7 regional competitions and delivered a presentation that introduced IFMSA-Kurdistan to a wider audience.

March Meeting The March Meeting is one of IFMSA’s two annual general assemblies, bringing together medical students from over 120 countries to discuss global health issues, participate in capacity-building sessions, and shape the future of the federation.

This year’s March Meeting took place in a hybrid format, with the in-person event held in Istanbul, Turkey, alongside online participation. IFMSA-Kurdistan was proudly represented by 16 delegates, in addition to 3 members of the IFMSA International Team.

Our in-person delegates actively participated in the President Sessions, where major decisions and elections of the new Executive Board were held. One of the proudest moments for our delegation was witnessing Ahmed Lateef, our current VPE and IFMSA SCOME Director, elected as the Vice President for Capacity Building for the term 2025/2026. Additionally, our CBSDD, Shahd Haider was elected as a Trainers’ Pool Advisory Group Member for the same term.

March Meeting Our delegates engaged in various sessions, networked with medical students from across the globe, and took part in multiple fairs and competitions. Both in-person and online delegates gave their all to represent Kurdistan at the international level — serving as part of session teams, plenary teams, financial committees, and contributing to sessions, fairs, and competitions.

Newroz Camp 2025 marked the fifth annual spring camp, co-hosted by the Duhok and Zakho Local Committees. Taking place from March 20th to March 23rd, this four-day event was the first of its kind within IFMSAKurdistan, bringing together over 120 participants who engaged in a diverse range of workshops. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in two international workshops (AMET & PRACT) or choose from three national workshops (ACT, IMPACT, & REACT).

The camp kicked off with a vibrant Kurdishthemed opening ceremony, fully embracing the Newroz spirit. Participants celebrated with a fire ceremony, bonfires, fireworks, traditional Kurdish music, and much more, creating an unforgettable festive atmosphere.

The camp concluded with a grand closing ceremony, where trainers, facilitators, and the organizing committee were recognized for their dedication and contributions through a formal certificate presentation. The night ended with a heartfelt appreciation for all who made this event possible.

Newroz Camp 2025 would not have been possible without the tireless dedication and passion of our Organizing Committee. They were the heart and soul of this event, bringing it to life through their creativity, hard work, and unwavering commitment. A huge thank you also goes to our sponsors, whose generous support and backing made this incredible experience a reality.

Over the next three days, attendees immersed themselves in intensive learning sessions, covering topics such as graphic design, advocacy, leadership, and global issues, led by some of IFMSA’s finest facilitators. Each evening, participants wound down with unique social nights, designed to showcase the dynamic vibes of Duhok and Zakho while fostering deeper connections among attendees.
