DuhokLORA

Helloeveryone, MynameisDinyaNazeerandI’ma third year medical student at the University of Duhok. My journey in IFMSA-Kurdistan began in my first year of being a medical student and I can confidently say that I owe so much of my medical knowledge, skills, and experience to the many IFMSA-Kurdistan activitiesthatI’vebeenapartof.
It is of upmost importance to me that as a medical student, I find a way to balance my studies and my personal life. Being a part of Duhok’s local board has helpedmecomeoutofmyshellandspendmoretime giving back to my community while also growing my loveformedicineevenmore.
When I reflect on the things that have gotten me to this point of my life I think of the time when I was in thethirdgradeandIreceiveda“LifeSaversAward”for helping those in need and I realize that I’ve unconsciously made that silly award my whole entire personality ever since. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled than speaking out and helping those who are less fortunate and that has always been my biggest motivationineverythingIdoinlifeandultimately,the reasonIdecidedtopursuemedicine.
I fell in love with reading and the magic of stepping into someone else’s shoes through stories at a very young age. Reading has always been a way for me to escape reality and to experience multiple different lives, cultures and perspectives wherever I am. So you canalwaysfindmeinmyownlittlecornerconsuming different content whether it’s books, music, films, or shows…anythingtosatiatetheartloverinme.
InthewordsofN.H.Kleinbaum;
“The human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance,love,thesearewhatwestayalivefor.”
This quote has always reminded me that while medicine is my purpose, it’s the humanity within and beyond it that gives my life its true meaning.Being Duhok’s LORA has given me the opportunity to create meaningful impact in the areas of medicine that I deeply care about. From empowering people to make informed decisions about their own bodies to promoting equality while dismantling the stigma and harmful stereotypes/taboos around sexual and reproductive health. SCORA has always been the standingcommitteewhereI’vefoundthatmypassions canalignwithmypurposeinlife.

I joined IFMSA-Kurdistan in 2023 and my journey has been incredibly rewarding. Taking on this role feels like a natural extension of my passion for education and my desire to make a lasting impact onthemedicalcommunity.
One of my main goals as LOME is to create opportunities that empower students to develop their skills and knowledge. Medical education is an ever-evolving field, and I believe we can inspire growth by bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical experience. Through workshops, projects, and collaborations, I hope to help students feel more prepared and confident in theirjourneytowardbecomingexceptionaldoctors. This year, I also had the privilege of being the head organizer of the Qallat Dentistry Camp. It was an incredible opportunity that brought dentistry students together to learn, connect, and grow. Moments like these remind me of the importance of teamwork and the potential we have to create changewhenwecometogether.

From a young age, I have been fascinated by the intersection of education and healthcare, believing that effective medical education is the foundation of a strong healthcare system. My journey as a medical student has been marked by a constant desire to improve both my own learning and that of mypeers.
Before taking on my leadership role in IFMSAKurdistan, I was already an advocate for better learning experiences. It’s like my body’s personal way of keeping me intrigued. Instead of relying on Dr. Google to alarm me with worst-case scenarios, I decided to study medicine and find the answersformyself.
Being in the College of Medicine can be incrediblychallengingandstressfulattimes, withendlessstudyingandhighexpectations. However, I firmly believe that we can find ways to make the journey more engaging and even fun. Seek support, and find joy in the small victories—whether it’s mastering a tough concept, connecting with a patient, or sharing a laugh with friends. My passion for medicine has always been strong. It’s always been my dream—and still is—to ensure that everyone receives the right treatment for their health. We are all somehow in medicine to help people and to make their lives easier as much as possible therefore it is very inspiring to be around such people everyday especially within IFMSAKurdistan where everyone is putting their all in to make an impactful change. The beautiful environment we’ve created within IFMSA-Kurdistan has given me hope. If we continue with the same excitement, I’m confident we’ll one day have a populationthat’shealthier,oratleastonethatcares fortheirhealthasmuchaswecarefortheirs.

I, Yara Hawraz, am Koya’s LPO for the 20242025 term. A second year student from Koya University and 19 years old. I’m an elder child of two, and I’m from Hawler, born and raised. SomefunfactsaboutmewouldbethatIlove with all my heart, art. I see it in just about everything, even in medicine. I make an effort to bring some of it to life, when I have the chance and the time to. Through painting and drawing and sometimes even writing, sharing your creativeness is a beautiful form of self expression, my favorite indeed.

Another hobby of mine would be reading. From science fiction books to the sweet romance , I love them all. It’s therapeutic and a harmless escape when you need to give your mind a rest from the rollercoaster of reality.Youknowwhattheysay:Whenyougo into the world of novels, there really is no comingbackout.
I also love exercise in all its forms. It’s always important to add some movement in your daily life, if it’s a 10 minute walk or a whole workout routine. Not only is it physically healthy and recommended by any professional you talk to, but it’s also refreshing for the mind, especially if you go out in nature and have some fresh air with it. That was overall, a few things to get to know me better. Hope to make you all proud in my position,tohavethebestofterms.
