IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT: MANIBELA TRANSPORT GROUP'S FIGHT AGAINST PUV PHASEOUT Khayte Dumas
T
he Manibela transport group, led by Mar Valbuena, launched a jeepney strike yesterday, October 16, 2023, to protest the extension of the deadline, the implementation of jeepney modernization, and the alleged corruption in the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The group was in the University of the Philippines Diliman to convene their vehicles and went to the LTFRB along East Avenue to protest the alleged corruption in the agency before heading to Mendiola. In Mendiola Street, Manila, a group of jeepney drivers expressed their grievances to the Malacañang. The drivers demanded an extension of the deadline for the implementation of the jeepney modernization program. They said they needed more time to meet the standards and buy brand-new, modern transport vehicles. "Class 2 na jeepney, 2.8 to 3.2 million ang halaga ng mga UV express (Public Utility Vehicle' modernized). Paano na lamang po ang mga (hand-to-mouth) daily wage earners?" Mar Valbuena said.
The strike led by the Manibela transport group aimed to send a message to President Bongbong Marcos Jr. regarding what they perceived as the inhumane implementation of the modernization plan. Mar Valbuena said that their strike was successful since some schools in Metro Manila suspended their classes, and free transportation was implemented by the government. "Doon pa lamang po, takot na ang gobyerno na makita ng taong bayan na walang masakyan ang ating mga commuters. Kasi kung hindi sila nag kansela siguradong walang masasakyan ang ating kababayan." Valbuena added. Dale Papa, VN's News Writing Head, further asked the latter of strike's status quo. Mark Valbuena replied that the protest will go on as they aim and to keep the media informed. Ensuring the masses, the drivers reiterated their commitment to continue their vital work—to provide a safe mode of transportation to the Filipino people.
The drivers also called for an investigation into alleged corruption related to the modernization program in the LTFRB. In an ambush interview, Mar Valbuena gave a statement: "Ito po and mahirap sa burukrasya. Talaga pong pananakot sa ating karapatan, sa ating hanapbuhay and kanilang ginagawa, Parang wala na talaga tayong karapatankung idikta nila." "Lahat ng panggigipit at pangungu rakot—lulunukin nalang ba natin ito?" He added.

She added that passing the Campus Press Freedom Bill, which is currently being lobbied in Congress, aims to ratify the provisions of RA 7079, such as the non-mandatory establishment of student publications and lack of penalty clause toward erring administrators. Last month's inflation rate was also lower than the 7.7 percent recorded in October last year.
assistance, especially while food prices remain high, and we expect El Niño to affect local and global food production," Balisacan said.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, inflation declined significantly in October as food prices increased less rapidly.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is currently piloting the Food Stamp Program (FSP), which the agency plans to scale up in mid-2024. BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. enlightened the recent offcycle boost by saying the Monetary Board (MB) "recognized the need for this urgent monetary action" to send a strong message to the market that the BSP is taking all necessary measures to bring inflation back to its 2 to 4 percent objective.
In a briefing, National Statistician Dennis Mapa noted that the lower inflation rate last month was mainly due to a reduced year-on-year rise in the significant category of food and non-alcoholic beverages, decreasing from 9.7 percent in September to 7.0 percent in October. According to Mapa, the annual growth of vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas, and pulses decreased to 11.9% from 29.6% in September, which was the main reason for the decline in inflation. Rice inflation also slowed to 13.2 percent from 17.9 percent the previous month. “The price of rice decreased monthon-month.” Mapa stated. Year-to-date, the headline inflation rate settled at 6.4 percent, while the core inflation rate was at 7.0 percent. Inflation in the National Capital Region (NCR) also decelerated to 4.9 percent from 6.1 percent in September. For areas outside the National Capital Region (NCR), inflation slowed down from 6.0 percent the previous month to 4.9 percent in October. Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) states that the government will persist in providing assistance to the most vulnerable sectors, as El Niño is expected to linger until mid-2024. "As inflation eases, it is crucial to continue monitoring the prices of commodities, particularly food, transportation, and energy, in light of global challenges such as geopolitical uncertainties and El Niño," stated NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has reported that the Philippines is currently experiencing a moderate El Niño, which is expected to lead to decreased rainfall across the country, potentially impacting agriculture and energy generation adversely.

The inflation rate for October would be an important point of reference for the central bank as it examines whether to convene a meeting on November 16 to continue tightening monetary policy or to temporarily suspend rate increases. This was reflected in late October, when the benchmark rate increased by 25 basis points to 6.50%, the highest level in sixteen years.

n September 2023, a Pulse Asia survey revealed a decline in President Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte's approval ratings, dropping from 80% to 65% and 84% to 73%, respectively. The survey conducted from September 10 to 14 highlights a significant shift in public opinion. During the same period, significant events took place, including congressional deliberations regarding the P5.7-trillion national budget for 2024 and the implementation of Executive Order (EO) No. 39, establishing a national price ceiling for regular milled rice. The online community's response ranged from labeling Musk as a “traitor” and a “Russian asset” to questioning whether Musk would address the perceived hypocrisy in his recent post. This incident is not the first time Musk has faced controversy regarding his viewpoints. Building a Utopia: What is the Price? Charlene Caramoan U
rsula K. Le Guin's narrative invites you to step into the enchanting world of Omelas. Just imagine a life where everything you desire, dream of, and adore is presented to you on a silver platter. If you happen to be a fan of all things shiny, Omelas will dazzle you with its glistening diamonds. Are you the life of the party? Well, Omelas is ready to dance the night away with you. Should pleasure be your pursuit, the streets of Omelas are a carnival of options. Should you ever contemplate mischief, Omelas doesn't scold, for it has no laws to break. Living in this city is not merely perfect; it's a dream come true for a child, a delight for a man, an adventure for a rogue, and an ecstasy for everyone. All that you desire is at your fingertips— no boundaries, no regulations, and no judgments. Inhabiting Omelas feels like a guilty pleasure you just can't resist. In the extraordinary city of Omelas, its people enjoy remarkable freedom. One of the most intriguing aspects of life there is a substance called "drooz." However, it's not entirely clear if drooz is a type of alcoholic drink or something else. According to the story, using drooz lets you experience the wonders of the universe through a unique lens. But why would the citizens of Omelas, who already live in wonder and delight every day, be interested in seeing more extraordinary things? Perhaps it's because they've become a bit bored or they're simply curious about the universe. Even in their utopia, they can't help but wonder about the mysteries beyond their city. So, why do they use drooz? You might be inclined to think that an excess of anything can be detrimental, and that too much happiness can turn toxic over time. That's a plausible perspective, but there's a deeper secret concealed within Omelas. In exchange for the city's boundless joy, a child endures unimaginable suffering. This once joyous child has been imprisoned and forced to silence its laughter, the reasons shrouded in mystery. What's crystal clear is that everything in Omelas hinges on the anguish of this child, and the city's inhabitants are well aware of it. Initially, shock and disgust gripped them, but with time, they chose to embrace reality and live their lives to the fullest, making the most of this sacrifice.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES QUEZON CITY BRANCH OFFICIAL STUDENTS’ PUBLICATION
They might even indulge in "drooz" to convince themselves that their happiness is pure, that there's no sacrificial lamb, and that Omelas is exactly as it appears on the surface. No one speaks out, no one takes action, and the child continues to suffer in agonizing silence for the remainder of its short life. It's a twisted but seemingly perfect way of life they've chosen to lead. As time passed, newer generations in Omelas couldn't bear the child's torment any longer. They left the city, walking until they were far from its borders, and have yet to return. They chose to flee from the problem rather than confront it head-on. Yes, they left behind the life of happiness in Omelas, but what about the child? Drawing a parallel with today’s situation, people often mirror those who walked away in Omelas when faced with inconvenient truths. In the tapestry of today's digital world, people are weaving a unique thread of resilience, one that bears a striking resemblance to the mythical "drooz." It's as if they’ve discovered a modern enchantment. As society grapples with daunting challenges, people are wielding the power of humor in the form of memes to shrink monumental issues down to a size they can manage. Some even channel their inner grooves in a dance for a cause, perhaps believing it might sprinkle a little "drooz" magic to make rice more affordable.

In the vast landscape of social media, it's a carnival of laughter, a brief respite from the realities that weigh them down. This is the digital age's enchanting escape, where laughter and lightheartedness reign, offering them a momentary break from life's tribulations. In a world adorned with memes and dance moves, they’ve found their own form of "drooz" to navigate the challenges that lie before them.

The allure of Omelas is undeniable. However, as you uncover the anguish of the sacrificial child, your desire to inhabit this city shifts from mere fancy to a profound yearning to champion the child's freedom. The battle for a child's liberation, marked by visible scars in a shadowy abyss, takes on a far greater significance than contending with the veiled corruption concealed by confidential justifications in the grip of a twisted regime.
They have a tendency to easily forget both their own struggles and the sacrifices made by fellow citizens fighting for a better life. This is why most of this nation’s citizens may elect leaders with famous names rather than considering their qualifications or ethics. The consequences of such choices are becoming apparent, but have they truly considered the sacrifices made by those who fight for your well-being? It's a question worth pondering before you entrust authority to individuals based solely on their fame.

HOPE AMIDST CONFLICT: THE ONGOING SEARCH FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST Ria May Jacobe
T
he day the power of love overrules the love of power, the world will know peace,” is a quote by Mahatma Gandhi that is to be read, heard, understood, and applied by people all over the world. It's sad to say that there are still countries experiencing on-andoff wars even today.
Cartoon by: Renz Jared Revilla
Last 7th of October this year, Israel was attacked by HAMAS through sea, land, and air offensives. HAMAS (Harakat Al-
Muqawama Al-Islamiya), also known as the “Islamic Resistance Movement” is a massive militant, skilled terrorist group in the Palestinian territories. Hamas directly bombarded Israel, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people, the kidnapping of hundreds of civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure. In history, both Jews (Judaism) and Muslims (Islamic) have deep cultural ties to the region dating back 4,000 years to Abraham, who is also known as the father of these two religions. According to the Old Testament of the Bible, God instructed Abraham and his people to inhabit the land of Canaan, which roughly corresponds to modern-day Israel. The Israelite monarchy was established by King Saul in 1,000 BCE and continued through his successors, King David and his son King Solomon, who built the first temple in Jerusalem, This laid the foundation for Jewish claims to the land of Israel. Following World War I, Great Britain assumed control of Palestine, Israel, and Jordan from the Ottomans. In 1922, the League of Nations approved the British declaration promising a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, but this promise took two years to fulfilled. In 1939, during World War II, over 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and millions were expelled. In 1947, the United Nations (UN) made a remarkable decision to split Palestine into two different countries: the Jewish State of Israel and the Arab State of Palestine. Nonetheless, Israel acknowledged the idea of partition; it caused violence and contradictions among the Arab populationswhereas they considered the idea of unfairly favouring the Jewish people. This led to the prolonged conflict in the region. The State of Israel was established with David BenGurion as its Prime Minister on May 14, 1948. Some groups in the surrounding Arab countries disagreed with the partition and launched attacks. Israel defended itself, gaining control of a significant portion of the land. On the other hand, Egypt took control of the Gaza Strip, while Jordan became Transjordan and controlled the West Bank. This marked a significant victory for the Jewish people, but an estimated 720,000 Arabs were forced to flee or were expelled from their homes. Some of them sought refuge in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and the Israel-Arab conflict continued for about 60 years. In 1964, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed to advocate for Palestinian rights. In 1987, following an incident involving the Israeli Defense Forces that resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians, a violent uprising by Palestinians, known as the First Intifada, erupted, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Subsequently, Ariel Sharon, who would become Prime Minister, visited the Temple Mount, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This visit was offensive to Palestinians and led to riots, attacks, bombings, and violent protests, marking the period known as the Second Intifada. The violence eventually ended in 2005 when Israel withdrew from Gaza. In 2006, a militant Sunni Islamic group, HAMAS, won the Palestinian legislative elections. Several countries consider HAMAS a terrorist group due to their methods, including carrying out suicide bombings and calling for the destruction of Israel continued to engage in violent conflicts. In 2017, HAMAS called for the formation of a Palestinian state using the 1967 borders but was not formally recognised as a state. The prevailing battle between Palestine and Israel made other countries suggest a peace agreement or a partition solution for the sake of both countries. The Israel-Palestine conflict is a long and complex issue deeply rooted in history, culture, and politics. The suffering and loss on both sides are a heart-aching reminder of the need for peace and resolution. Achieving lasting peace may be a challenging journey, but it's a journey worth embarking on. The lessons of history tell us that peace is a treasure we must all strive for, for the sake of generations to come. Let's hope for a future where the world truly knows peace, where love overcomes the love of power, and where the IsraelPalestine conflict finds a path to resolution and coexistence.

This exciting event, held on October 20, was a grand invitation to PUPQC students and alumni, creating a sense of unity and nostalgia in the air. The stage was set, and the spotlight was on the array of performers, including RJ Amorcillo, Baliwari, Marahuyo, Pahimakas, Syntax Serenade, and Kyutsinta, most of whom are proud PUPQC students themselves. At 2:30 in the afternoon, the excitement erupted - Kyusi Night was here. The first act, a spellbinding production put on by the talented students of MUSA kicked off the night. With a twist in the plot and flawless delivery, the audience was swept away into the enchanting world crafted by the performers. Not only was it a feast for the senses, but also a showcase of the boundless talent within the PUPQC community. It set a bar of excellence for the rest of the evening, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience for everyone present.
The pulsing heart of "Kyusi Night" was its music, effortlessly captivating the crowd. The crowd was captivated as talented performers took the stage, delivering powerful renditions of beloved Original Pilipino Music (OPM) hits that struck a chord with both students and alumni alike. Yet, it was the enchanting performance of Taylor Swift's "Enchanted" that truly stole the show, filling the air with a palpable sense of harmony and fond memories as the entire audience sang along. During intermissions, attendees were treated to a sensory delight, with a tempting array of mouthwatering treats that can be seen at the variety of stalls set up around the venue. From sizzling street food to traditional delicacies, every craving was satisfied. Not only that, the students’ eyes lit up as they discovered an assortment of souvenirs. For those looking to unleash their creative side, a henna tattoo station offered the perfect outlet, adding to the lively ambience of the night. Among the treasures waiting to be discovered were fluffy teddy bears personalized with the name of PUP, pins adorned with the PUP logo, magnet cards with custom designs, tshirts and lanyards with various designs, and a myriad of other captivating keepsakes. Consequently, the simplicity of the Kyusi Night venue design stirred conversations among PUPQC students and alumni in attendance. from ticket sales were predominantly channelled into securing the most exceptional audio experience for attendees, with the ultimate goal of creating a memorable auditory voyage. It was divulged that significant financial resources had already been committed to the previous PUPQC event, Mr. and Ms. PUPQC, held on July 29, 2023, causing a diversion of attention and funds away from the decorative element of Kyusi Night.
While the prioritization of sound quality was appreciated by many attendees, the lack of decorative elements had become a point of contention among some PUPQC students. For some, the absence of visual aesthetics seemed to detract from the overall experience. They believed that a more visually pleasing ambiance could have complemented the extraordinary musical talent on display, making the event even more memorable. This divergence in opinions highlighted the diverse expectations and preferences of the event's audience, sparking discussions about the balance between investing in audio and visual elements to create a truly immersive and captivating experience. "Kyusi Night" transcended being a mere music festival; it served as a resounding celebration of the remarkable talents within the PUPQC community. It created a unique space where students and alumni, bound by their shared experiences at PUPQC, came together to reminisce, reconnect, and forge new memories. Against the backdrop of a simple yet charming stage, brought to life by the unwavering passion of the performers, familiar melodies, a diverse culinary experience, and creative artistry, "Kyusi Night" etched itself into the collective memory as an indelible celebration of music and talent, reinforcing the strong sense of unity and pride that defines PUPQC.

Pahimakas, one of the Filipino language’s heritage, literally translates to a solemn farewell. Why then did Jilbrix Kyle Magno, Pahimakas’ rhythm guitarist and second vocalist choose this beautiful yet soul-weighing Tagalog word as their band name?
2023 EDITION
they defeated their fears as they had finished with a strong start, as an establishing group, in the four corners of the said museum.
Well, as they say, “Not all endings are bad. Some are just beginnings in disguise.” And this is what the newly conceived Quezon City-based band Pahimakas wanted to ignite in the hearts of not just the Iskolars ng Bayan but millions of Filipinos. The Mag-aaral ng Unibersidad sa Sining at Adhika has sown seeds of passion and desire for the performing arts in the hearts of the beloved students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Quezon City. One of the fruits of this bountiful harvest of planted decades of hard work are members of the Pahimakas. Marcus Yuri Labrador, Daniella Valeroso, Andrei “Ace” Casulla, Jilbrix Kyle Magno, Clark Kent Chua, and Ayie Gaviola were all part of the MUSA Himig, one of the four branches of the MUSA organization. All of these individuals were born showered with admiration and appreciation for singing several genres of songs and playing various instruments. Ending their doubts and reservations, the Pahimakas started to pave its way in the music industry by entering a new era. Well for starters, they literally entered the New Era University, as a group of students from the latter were looking for a band that could act and also play music for their film. With that, Jilbrix’s MUSA friends Marcus, Andrei, Ayie, and Daniella started to run rent-free in his mind. A spark of match ignited the fuel of passion in their hearts as they were not just asked to act and perform in front of the camera, but were as well asked to arrange the said students’ composition. Needless do they know that at this very moment, Pahimakas’ member line-up was starting to get arranged as well. Marcus took the same role as Jilbrix, as one of the main vocalists and rhythm guitarist of the band. He was then declared as the forerunner of the group or better yet, the “face of the band.” Daniella backed her friends up, in life and in music as she stood as the sub-vocalist and the bassist of the group. Andrei came to be the keyboardist of the band whilst Ayie took control as the main drummer. These five core members left their comfort zones as they started to risk it all outside their campus premises. They were blessed to be given a chance to show what they got to the hopefuls at the Museo ng Pag-Asa—a place made to serve as a refinery of volunteerism. A place and a sanctuary for artists and creatives. A place that seems perfect for the newly conceived band to start their first step in the long journey ahead of them. Of course, they needed an upgrade. Pahimakas will finally perform their first, formal outside gig. That’s where Clark Kent Chua and Ace Marvel Vizoro entered the scene—or better yet the next chapter for the Pahimakas. With Ace’s sweet and gentle strumming of his bow toward the strings of his violin and Clark’s passion-driven guitar plucking, the band has finally completed its ensemble. Different people with different personalities. Different musicians with different genre likings. That’s who Pahimakas is on the inside. People who are all new to the music scene. People who are just trying to do the next right thing. Scholarship-dependent students, who are trying to do their best to balance academics, extracurricular activities, social life and oh...is love life included? The members of Pahimakas are still on the verge of trying to find their identities. Their identity as an individual and their musical identity as a band. All of these uncertainties can surely make a young adult terrified to the bone. Yet one thing is for sure: Pahimakas know what they are made for. In a podcast-like interview with Vox Nova, Marcus and Daniella also shared with us how their band desires to inspire young musicians, like them, to pursue and take music seriously. “You wouldn’t know what the outcome would be if you didn’t take the risk. We didn’t anticipate that we would be the band we are now if not because of that.” The many times they had said goodbye to the resting times they were supposed to have after classes just to practice for their incoming gigs. The blood, sweat, and tears they gave just to satisfy their love and thirst for music are what made them who they are now. These were the type of goodbyes the Pahimakas don’t and would not regret. These beautiful goodbyes led them to open new opportunities. One of them was the pleasure of being chosen as one of the bands to perform at the most awaited musical concert in PUPQC this year. Kyusi night: The Musical was the time when their supporters were able to show the heat of their admiration towards Pahimakas. Everyone present that night is in their glistening moment as the flashing lights from the phones of the Iskos and Iskas seem to mimic the millions of stars in the sky. Every PUPQCian screamed at the top of their lungs the moment Jilbrix started to sing the first line of the classic Up-Dharma Down song “Tadhana” with a twist! Marcus made sure to maintain this heat by leading their “Jopay” performance. Sure enough, the face of the group didn’t fail to make the hearts of the girls skip a beat with his mesmerizing visuals and vocals. Subvocalist Daniella also didn’t waiver for a second as she ended their band’s performance with a bang with her strong vocals belting a hard goth-rock song like Bring Me To Life. These top-of-the-roof performances would not be possible without Andrei, Ayie and Clark's strong muscle memory to memorize all the notes to hit their respective musical instruments. Being able to be witnessed by waves of audiences, the band has strengthened their branding in the PUPQC community. In fact, they had been invited consecutively to several events on the campus, such as the opening of the Entrepreneurs’ Hub and even Vox Nova’s very own Journalistic Conference for this year 2023! With Pahimakas’ escalating success story, we could now say that we could also gain something from goodbyes. Iskolar ng Bayan, don’t be afraid to say goodbye to your fears. Throw away your reservations. Jump off cliffs and take risks. You only have one life to live. Like Pahimakas, start to bid your goodbyes to regrets. Start to actually live your life now. Now is always the right time to do something you like. In the meantime, let’s all together bid our farewells to Pahimakas. Remember, every goodbye is a beginning in disguise.

First for fun, and then for enchantment. Being a freshman did not hinder them from influencing their fellow students in the Sintang Paaralan through their unbridled melodies. 30th of September this year, a young 12-membered musical group was born, with Hiraya Musika as its birth name. Despite working in a band, each member gets to establish their passion, interest, and strong identity in the domain of music. With fate’s lending hand, they found each other’s trace of melody in the comfort of Hiraya Musika. Undoubtedly, the lineup positions within Hiraya Musika are just as impressive as the group itself. A composer, four instrumentalists, and ten vocalists make up the band with each of them equally enticing. This musical group's origin started with Jay Mark Ramos, BTLEDHE 1-1 program's class president's playful imagination. With chances intertwined by a sequential turn of events, they seized it to sanction themselves as a musical band. From that, the rest is history. “Hiraya Musika," a name that translates to "imagination" and “music," aims to promote and inspire musicality among the PUPQC community. Now, how exactly is that? Well, that can only be answered by seeing their performances personally and letting your mind formulate the response to that question afterwards. But Hiraya Musika is only a month old, what do they even have to offer? Well, despite being together for only a month, Hiraya Musika has already performed in front of PUPQC's esteemed professors for the World Teacher's Day celebration, singing SB19's "MAPA" while incorporating self-composed lyrics about teachers' appreciation.
STRIKING THE RIGHT As their very first group performance, they geared themselves with their weapons– guitar, beatbox, and voices. After that, Hiraya Musika was also given a chance to perform for the FBTO and Kataga’s respective assemblies. This is a strong indication that they are slowly gaining the recognition they deserve; and as usual, it was a hearttouching musical performance. They even got the audience to sing with them during their performance at FBTO’s general assembly! TAYLOR SWIFT: THE WOMAN BEHIND 'THE MAN' Lei Lacerna
2023 EDITION
Seven years after Lover’s release, Taylor Swift surely made the world best believe that she can still make the whole place shimmer by launching her 3-hour show entitled “The Eras Tour,” this year 17th of March. This serves as an homage to her 17-year career, encompassing all her works from her self-titled album Taylor Swift up to her current album Midnights. The tour which started in Glendale, Arizona shook the

The 2022 World Bank Report reveals that women in 95 countries encounter various job restrictions and unequal pay for their work. These challenges extend beyond traditional career areas, such as "black-collar" jobs, encompassing creative professions like musicians, actors, and directors–fields to which the pop star phenomenon belongs. As Taylor Swift reached the striking point of her career with her sophomore album “Fearless” last 2008, the world found itself divided. Several sexist criticisms were scattered over the internet, all of which have the same motive of discrediting an 18-year-old’s successful worldwide domination. Swift tried to safeguard herself, stating: “It’s fine to infantilize a girl’s success and say, How cute that she’s having some hit songs. But the second it becomes formidable? As soon as I started playing stadiums — when I started to look like a woman — that wasn’t as cool anymore,” After a decade of facing the media's relentless scrutiny, along with controversies and setbacks, Taylor came back stronger than a '90s trend. The release of her single "The Man" from her 2016 album "Lover" has sent ripples through the media. It presented itself as a musical statement addressing the sexism she has encountered throughout her career in the music industry. Prominent figures like Brittany Hodak of Forbes commended how the singer-songwriter brilliantly portrayed the subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination women face each day. We [women] have to curate and cater to everything, but we have to make it look like an accident. Because if we make a mistake, that's our fault, but if we strategize so that we won't make a mistake, we're calculating. There is a bit of a damned-ifwe-do, damned-if-we-don't thing happening in music.

As the first leg of her U.S. tour reached its final destination last August 2023, QuestionPro estimated that Swift had swiftly lifted the US economy that same month by 5 billion dollars or P283 billion pesos. The revenue will continue to progress as the Taylor Swift empire conquers the European, Australian, and Asia-Pacific continents up til next year, 2024. Taylor Swift doesn’t seem to stop cracking her ‘easter eggs’ open as she surprises the world with her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film which premiered all cinemas across the globe on last 13th of October. The Philippines has proven to the world its title as a certified “Taylor Nation,” by garnering 1P5.4 billion pesos of total domestic gross within less than a month of the film’s screening. Her ongoing Eras Tour and Film showing didn’t hinder the megastar from overcoming the world as she simultaneously launched her 4th re-recorded album "1989 Taylor’s Version," on last 27th of October. Scooter Braun's 2019 sale of her music rights to another party, disregarding its rightful owner, served to make Taylor's "mastermind" surge in wisdom and creativity. With the support of her new music label which genuinely values and respects her craftsmanship, she has been able to produce twice the amount of music that the world expected of her. This enabled Swift not just to re-record her songs but also a chance to release her "In the Vault tracks," none of which were included in the stolen versions of her albums. This unspoken testimony of hers resounds to mankind of how women can thrive and be triumphant on their own, leveraging their innate skills and talents, with or without a man's lending hand. Swift has proven to the world throughout her career how she can build castles out of the bricks thrown at her. —A line from “I Know Places,” a song from the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Album The 33-year-old singer-songwriter’s artistry gives light to women of all ages on how women can be 'fearless leaders' and 'alpha types' in the fields they were called to reign in. Taylor Swift’s life reads a narrative that you don't have to be 'The Man' to become the woman of your dreams.
CATALYZING INFLUENCES: THE POWER OF "SHE"
2023 EDITION
"Leadership isn't just a title; it's a daily practice of influence and intentions.” And whatever your stand on that statement is, this person is a living embodiment of it. She is known for her role as the head of the Supreme Student Council in PUPQC and her vigour and heart for public service. Transparent, bold, and visionary—she is a requisite force that propels the PUPQC community and organizations toward the various flourishing of trumpets. A quintessence of gentleness and empathy. Fearless and versatility. A leader, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a colleague, a student, and a devoted servant all at once! She is Ms. Ellen Joy Cahutay. The ever respectable president, senior, and the only “Ate Ellen” of the PUPQC community. But why the SSC head position? Who’s eccentric enough to casually crave for responsibilities anyway? Well, substantially venturing into the volunteering realm at a young age, middle school to be exact. Ate Ellen has already built an extensive legacy in volunteering. She commenced it all in a Sunday school drive in her homegrown church when she was just in 4th grade. From then on, she immediately found her anchor–and that is to serve, to give, to aid, and to provide. Public serving already echoes her name despite being a juvenile augmenting her calling. High school years are traced on the same path. She converged with various positions, student bodies, community projects, and church activities that acted as her catalysts to serve. Ate Ellen had an angular outlook as she radiates her purpose in her work. She sees herself in the faces of people and children to whom she’s offering her aid. Volunteering became one of her doses. All of these then led her drive to grab the SSC head position as a challenge. To be there for the PUPQC community.
Shallie Lalantacon
But being the SSC head is not just all about rainbows and sunshine—contradicting the sound ecstasy that the title gives. The demand and workloads would beg to differ. The amount of dedication, time, effort, skills, sleep, and tears that it requires and must be poured upon this position. One may think and fill in the shoes of what a tiring life her life must be to live. Well, Ate Ellen understands the most essential thing in serving. She always chooses to go back to her core. To go back to her main motivation and reasons. The friends, the people who chose to believe. Those who saw what you didn’t in yourself. Those who one could be vulnerable when it is needed to be. As in this position, not all days are as happy as it may seem. Upon her last year in the Sintang Paaralan, she wants to leave a trace as an inspiration icon to her fellow Iskos and Iskas. But for now, let us focus on what more will Ate Ellen bring to the table of the PUPQC community in the last days remaining for this current school year.

2023 EDITION
2024 LOVE HOROSCOPE Elle Aries Self-reliance often goes out the window when you’re in a relationship, Aries, but not this year. In 2024, guard your autonomy like a sphinx, even when you’re crazy in love. Yes, Ram, it’s possible to give yourself space without pushing people away. Single Aries will revel in their solo status, but in the second half of the year, it will be hard to keep admirers at bay. The solar eclipse on October 2 brings a jolt of fresh-start energy to relationships.
Taurus The potential for soulmate connections is high for you this year, but you’ve got to stay in one place long enough to build the bond. Until May 25, you may be too much of a moving target for Cupid’s arrows. “Quality time” becomes your love language again in the second half of the year. Make up for lost time with an epic baecation. Single and searching? Pay attention to who shows up near the April 8 eclipse.
Gemini To attract—or keep—the soulful love that 2024 has in store for Gems, a few sacrifices may be in order. Start by blocking disruptive exes (even if you’re truly “just friends”) or bowing out of random social activities that clutter your schedule. Geminis in relationships: Be careful not to slip into caretaker mode. You need a partner who will support your expansion—not one who drains your emotional resources by acting like a baby. The good news? It may only take a few honest conversations with your S.O. to stop beige flags from turning into red ones.
Cancer Relationships deepen in powerful ways this year, but here’s the twist: For you to feel close to someone, you’ll need more welldefined boundaries. Practice the art of speaking up for yourself and being less agreeable. Trust that you’re setting the stage for a healthy, mutual relationship— without the toxicity of resentment poisoning the well. With sultry Pluto relocating to your eighth house of permanent bonds for 20 years in 2024, settling down is sexy! Get ready for some big developments this summer, when a pair of Capricorn full moons light up your seventh house of relationships on June 21 and July 21.

Leo Are you in, or are you out? That answer fluctuates wildly in 2024. With Saturn and Neptune in your deep-diving eighth house, you could turn a romantic fantasy into a legit reality, nuptials and all. But Jupiter and the lunar nodes are charging up your wild child energy. If you’re ticking off the boxes on someone else’s checklist, you could wind up disappointed. Be the author of your own love story, even if it follows a script that’s never been written before.
Virgo Fantasy meets reality for Virgos in 2024, as grounded Saturn and dreamy Neptune sail together through your partnership house all year. Relationships are a powerful mirror and, gulp, not always a flattering one. Remember this: There’s no better tool for self-discovery than seeing yourself through another person’s eyes. Virgos could meet someone who’s marriage material this year or decide to make a situationship official. But watch out for sabotaging tendencies that could creep up near the September 17 eclipse.
Libra Lessons in love will be plentiful this year as the destiny-driven north node rolls through Aries and your relationship house all year. Shift away from playing the supporting role. This year, you need to build a mutually beneficial connection where both people get to thrive and win. Sultry experimentation could lead you to tantric sex, role playing, and other sexpositive delights—especially with potent Pluto embarking on a 20-year journey through your passionate fifth house. Yes, Libra, you deserve to be worshipped and adored.
Scorpio Quietly observing from the corner? That was fun. But in 2024, love requires you to be fully interactive. Liberated Jupiter and Uranus unite in your partnership house for the first half of the year, which could turn you into a full-on relationship anarchist. Write your own rules, Scorpio; it’s nobody’s business but your own. When Jupiter drifts into Gemini and your erotic eighth house on May 25, you’ll be up for some envelope-pushing experimentation. But you’ll also need a clear-cut commitment now, so here’s to finding a relationship with equal doses of lust and trust.
Sagittarius Where do your passions lie, Sagittarius? The more you focus on what lights you up, the more likely you’ll be to attract someone who adores the truest you. The lunar north node spends the year in Aries and your fertile, romantic fifth house making this a delicious year for proposals, pregnancies, or simply enjoying some high-vibe love. Circle April 8, when the total solar eclipse could reveal a hot prospect who’s been hiding in plain sight. On May 25, your ruler, daring Jupiter, swings into Gemini and your partnership house for a year. You could place your bets on a worthy candidate or plan something epic, like a couples vacation or major purchase with your S.O.
Capricorn The first half of 2024 is exceptionally exciting for Capricorns in love. No-limits Jupiter and experimental Uranus are synced up in Taurus and your passionate fifth house, setting you free to explore relationships in whatever configuration your heart desires. Proposals, pregnancies, power-coupling—take the initiative to bring your vision of love into form. Love planet Venus visits Capricorn twice, softening your resistance to intimacy. And with a pair of back-to-back full moons in Capricorn on June 21 and July 21, you’ll be wearing your heart on your sleeve this summer.
Aquarius With love planets Venus and Mars uniting in your sign this February, there’s no need to wait until spring for your romantic awakening. But “settling down” may be the last thing on your mind this year. With adventurous Jupiter soaring into Gemini and your romance zone for a year on May 25, you need a passionate playmate who will expand your world with their visionary ideals. That’s not to say you can’t get serious—in fact, you need to know that you’re with someone who will be transparent and trustworthy, whether your arrangement is conventional or not. The second half of the year could bring everything from a baby bump to a blingy rock on a certain finger. The lunar eclipse on September 17 brings a make-it-or-break-it moment. You’ll need to choose: Will you stay, or will you go?
Pisces Lessons in love will be potent for Pisces in 2024, as the karmic south node swirls through Libra and your intimate, seductive, transformational eighth house. Are you working too hard to win someone’s affections? If so, it’s time to draw back. Watch out for your inner saboteur who may show up in the form of jealousy or insecurity, especially near the two Libra eclipses on March 25 and October 2. While these emotions are important to listen to, they may stem from earlier pain that you are ready (and willing) to heal.

“BYAHENG TSUPER, KASAMA ANG KOMYUTER” Jia Capindo
Paigtingin, pagtibayin, at paingayin!

JUSTICE FOR OPPRESSED
2023 EDITION
In every color, there's a common goal, Hand in hand, a brave heart and soul. Our strength to stand tall, to break the horror, The new future, fighting for marginalized sectors. Break the cycle, raised thy voices of hope, Towards a progressive world and stay woke. Believe in unwavering support and justice to achieve Human rights to behold and address, a right to breathe.
Mary Rose B. Micayas
Universal needs, a life time quests,
Echoes of the voice of justice for the oppressed. Human rights to break free and fight, To speak, to live, to love, to dream, and a shared light. In a world of tyranny, the unity serves as guide, Stand with human rights, stop the fears, don't abide. A beacon of resilience, embrace the peace, Equal rights a moral and dignity's grace.
MY DEAREST FILIPINO PEOPLE rowing up In a family where speaking up for myself is G disrespectful, where fighting for what I know is right
makes me a rebel, and where disagreeing with my elderly makes me a bad person. My early years were abundant in provision. Throughout my adult life, I have always harbored hopes for a change and a deeper exploration of the world. However, when reality set in, I discovered that life wasn't always as nice as it seemed for the people outside of my privileged bubble. When I was a kid, I was prohibited from speaking up, and now they are prohibited from their rights. After that, I understood that the real battle was on the outside, and I started writing for them. My dearest Filipino people. Preserving the rights of the Filipino people has always been of utmost importance to me, not only as an individual with a hopeful heart but also as an Iskolar ng Bayan, who bears a great responsibility to uphold the rights of the people I have always fought for. The observation of Human Rights Day, which draws attention to the inequality between the privileged and the underprivileged, reflects this responsibility. We the students are not just learners; we are the future leaders, innovators, and influencers of society. Especially, since I am an aspiring entrepreneur. I believe in the importance of freedom, equality, and justice and I will always advocate for it. This is not just a responsibility, but a calling to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, is treated with dignity and respect in society. Let us not forget that the struggle for human rights is an ongoing one on this Human Rights Day. Courage, resiliency, and an unwavering dedication to the principles of justice, equality, and freedom are necessary for this journey. Let us, the Iskolars ng Bayan, persist in being the ray of hope, the voice of the silenced, and the defenders of human rights. Finally, it should be noted that promoting freedom, equality, and justice involves more than just changing the world. Making the world a place where everyone can coexist is the goal. As a result, supporting these ideas as students is a commitment to making the world a better place for everyone, not just a duty.

A BLUE IN A RAINBOW Princess Nicole Bataller Sartin
R
ainbow symbolizes hope and love. In our world where hope and love is sometimes not present together with acceptance, is it really possible to seek love and freedom? To accept and love one another without judgements? Is it really viable to find our rainbow in the midst of the clouds? Blaze sat here chuckling and talking on the phone, too excited to say anything more. Asher: I need vinegar for my adobo; go to the store and get some first. Blaze: Come on, dad. I'm having some baby time. Take a moment! Asher: You're in your room talking with someone all the time. Are you dating someone? I don't mind if you have a girlfriend; our neighbors have always said that you look to be gay. Blaze: Do I look like I'm gay? Crazy as hell, dad! Do you really think that people who are gossiping have something sensible to say? Asher: It's great, Blaze because I don't want a gay person in my life, so please leave if you're gay. Blaze scowled as she accepted the money and walked away. ASHER P.O.V. The father entered Blaze's room and took the phone. He tried to open it but there was a password. Blaze: Dad! I'm here! Here's your vinegar. Asher: Why does your cell phone have a password? How can I open it? Blaze: Privacy is still in trend, duh. Asher: Duh? Blaze covering his mouth Blaze: t-that i-is a new expression Asher: Open your cell phone, now! Blaze: Dad, there's nothing like Asher: OPEN IT! *Crying* Blaze gave his cellphone to his father. He was nervous as his father took it and began to browse. Up until Asher noticed something on its messenger.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES QUEZON CITY BRANCH OFFICIAL STUDENTS’ PUBLICATION
Asher: How come your messenger has a "baby" Nickname? Son, do you have a girlfriend? His father was overjoyed to find out that his only son had a girlfriend. Blaze: A moment of my life where I seek hope that somehow can change the perspective of my father. A moment where I wish for him to seek the acceptance I wanted to have for so long and a moment I want someone to give me courage to tell the truth of who I truly am. Upon viewing the profile, his father was taken aback to discover that his son was likely conversing with a man. Asher: IS THAT A MAN?! WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO A MMAN?! AND W-WHY ARE YOU TWO SAYING I LOVE YOU TO EACH OTHER?! S-SON WHAT IS THIS!? Tell me the truth, are you gay?! Blaze: YES! I'M GAY! SO WHAT?! Are you disappointed because I'm gay? Are you ashamed of me? Are you also one of the people who judge me? What else?! What if I'm like this? Are you no longer my child even though I'm like this? Is it embarrassing to call you dad just because I'm gay?! Asher: YES! I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE LIKE THAT! I DO NOT WANT! Blaze: WHY!? I'M HUMAN TOO! WHY ARE YOU STILL LIKE THAT?! Asher: YOU KNOW NOTHING! You can't be gay, you can't. Do you understand me? Fix it yourself! Change it! Blaze: What are your thoughts on this, Dad? When you said that I needed to change, is this something that I can take off more easily? My heart tells it all—I'm gay—. This is me, your son. Is your reputation more important than mine? Blaze: Go ahead, dad. So that you can remain silent, and you won't feel embarrassed, and so that your neighbor won't spread rumors about you that Asher has a gay son. I'm simply going to walk out. I won't be around you again. You do not have a gay child from now on, so don't worry. I guess there are wishes that are not meant to be granted. I wish for a rainbow, a shining bright blue color in it which means acceptance but instead I receive a storm that destroys my home including my father. When can I experience the warmness of the sun?

Someone eventually knocked on the door. When Auriel, Blaze's friend, opened it, she was startled to see Asher, Blaze's father. Asher: Is my son there? Auriel: Hi, Uncle Asher. Please come inside Blaze: D-dad, What are you doing here? Asher:Come on son, let's go home. Blaze: I don't want to, dad, if you can't accept me, I think maybe we won't get along either. Asher: You don't understand me son, come on. Blaze: Dad, could you please explain what you're saying to me? The world has denied me many things: my mother passed away before I was born, and I don't even know her name, as well as the fact that I want to be gay and that's not allowed?! Asher: Son, your mother is not dead. Blaze: WHAT? Asher: She is not dead, she just left us. Blaze: Why dad? Is she ashamed of me too? Asher: The truth is, I'm also a gay. Blaze felt taken aback and baffled by what his father had told him. Asher: Mom of yours is a lesbian. I am a gay man who aspires to be a man for the reason your grandmother and grandfather don't want me. I felt ashamed of them. Your mom wanted to change, too, but I didn't realize it until I went to the bar. -FLASHBACK Brei: Are you alone tonight? Asher: too obvious. Brei: tss. Asher: pssstt. Lesbian. The two looked at each other and laughed like there was no tomorrow. Asher: We were so drunk that something unexpected happened. We were all ready to change simply because of you, but she didn't think she could until you were born -FLASHBACK

Blaze: How can I be free if I have no freedom with you? Still, I don't care what others say to me. What is important to me is you. Just accept me as I am and I will be free. I can handle everything as long as I am with you. Asher: *cries* Forgive me son. Forgive me, I love you so much. Sorry son. Come let's go home. We can do it all, as long as we are together. Rainbow is a creation full of colors to signify a hope after a stormy day. I found my rainbow… Wendy: That's Asher's gay son, right? Will Blaze reach someone and prove something in his life if he is gay? The gossip that the father and son had heard from their neighbors. They just heard nasty and cruel words. Asher: This is true that I'm proud of my son's being gay. Since I accepted him, I guess he's also proud of me. Do your kids think highly of you for gossiping? Come on, my lovely daughter. Blaze: I found a color that changed my life. A blue that signifies acceptance and this is my blue in a rainbow full of clouds, my father who is my rainbow after the rain. Worldwide, individuals encounter violence, inequity, and, at times, even suffering at the hands of those with narrowminded views regarding the issue at hand, their physical characteristics, or their true identity. Gender identity and sexual orientation are significant facets of our identities that shouldn't give rise to mistreatment or discrimination. We don't have the right to condemn someone based only on their sexuality. The mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of people who have been subjected to discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and possibly gender expression can be seriously affected, even for those who do not face present threats to their life in general. Advocating for laws and regulations that uphold everyone's right to dignity. We all have the freedom to completely exercise our rights in the natural world.
Asher: Son, I've experienced a lot just because I'm gay. Oppressed, considered a plague, I just don't want you to experience that. I want you to be free.

So let us embrace the sacrifice, And let motivation be our device, For in this dance of life we weave, We find the strength to truly believe.
In life’s tapestry woven with care, Sacrifices made: burdens we bear. Through hardship and struggle, we grow, Motivation fuels our inner glow.
In life’s grand symphony, we play our part, Sacrifice and motivation, our beating heart. With every step, we continue our journey, A testament to life’s eternal glory.
