MASTERMIND BEHIND THE ARCHITECTURE Jean Prouvé is a French Industrial and Furniture Designer and Architect. Prouvé is one of the most influential furniture designers of the early modern design movement, he introduced the machine age and industrial engineered modern design aesthetic to interiors in steel, aluminum and architecture.

He was born into an artistic family in Nancy, France; his famous father, Victor Prouvé, collaborated with the great Art Nouveau artists Emile Galle and Louis Majorelle as a ceramicist. Jean Prouvé himself was trained as a metal smith before attending engineering school in Nancy, and his intimate knowledge of metal remained the foundation of his work and career. After opening his own workshop in 1923, Jean Prouvé began producing modern metal furniture of his own design as well as collaborating with some of the best-known French modern designers of the day. His shelving units for the dormitories at the Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris, designed with Perriand and the artist Sonia Delaunay in 1952, are perhaps the best known examples of his collaborative work.

Jean Prouvé regarded himself as more of an engineer and constructor instead of a modern designer. He never designed for the sake of form, concentrating instead on the essence of materials, connections and production.

He strove for the most constructionally and materially efficient designs, with such classic

end results as the modern design Standard chair of 1934 and the Antony chair of 1954.

Utilizing his innovative method of folding sheet metal, Prouvé designed a series of tables that have the perceived lightness of bridges and the presence of architecture. In the 1950s, Prouvé was forced to abandon modern design furniture production and began devoting his time to the challenges of prefabricated architecture. His own house, which he designed as a prototype, is now considered a major development in prefab housing. Even though Jean Prouvé has long been an influential force among modern designers, especially constructionally minded architects such as Norman Foster and Renzo Piano, and his vintage modern design has been sought after for years by connoisseurs and museums who specialize in modern design, his work has remained relatively unknown to the general design public. Recently, however, there has been a resurgence and his original modern design creations can be purchased at fine auction houses like Wright20.com. Vitra Germany also reissued some of his modern design under approval of the Jean Prouvé estate.

For spacing of the words, “Prouvé Design,” use one an a half measurements of the upper case letter X between the lowest part of the symbol and where the type should go. This is the main logo used for both print and online.

THE CO LOR PALET TE Our color palette is pretty simple. We chose colors that are neutral and help our brand remain sophisticated and functional, just as Prouvé would have it. The circle graph to the right shows the breakdown of hierarchy in colors.

T YPOGRAPHY For typefaces on the web, we use Arial for PCs and Helvetica for Macs. Our corporate typeface for print is Brandon Grotesque. We use the complete family package: regular, italic, bold, and black for a clean and sophisticated look.

CREATING PAT TERNS We don’t use many, but we try to incorporate simple circular patterns because of the rounded edges of the furniture ProuvÊ created. It helps to add a little depth.

We also use the logotype as a small pattern in a row of three for decorative purposes.

Creating Patterns

LOGO PAT TERN The Logo Pattern is used as an accent mainly for print design. However, it can be used for web if it is in a group of three and not heavily patterned.

First, measure half of the logo hotdog style using the rectangle tool. This will be used as our ruler for figuring out the spacing between each logo.

Now move the rectangle so that the top of the rectangle is aligned with the bottom left corner of the logo. Copy and paste the logo and align the top right corner of the new logo with the rectangle. Repeat once more.

Delete the rectangles and there you have your perfectly spaced logo pattern! Now you can resize the group into any size you want. Please keep in mind that it is only used to accent the design.

Creating Patterns

POLKADOT TED PAT TERN The Polka-Dotted Pattern is a background for both print and web. It is based off of the circular window design that Jean Prouvé is often pictured in front of.

Using Adobe Illustrator, open a new document about the size of 8.5 x 11 inches. Turn on and change both horizontal and vertical rulers to read in inches.

Create a small ellipse with a diameter of about 0.15 inches and place it at the top left corner of the document. Copy and paste the same ellipse and place it directly parallel on the opposite corner of the document.

Select the two ellipses and go to Object > Blend > Make. This will create your pattern for you without you having to break a sweat.

To edit the blend into a pattern, select Object > Blend > Blend Options. From the pop-up menu, change the dropdown menu to “Specified Distance.” Here you will add the amount of dots there will be in the line. You may have to mess around with it, but what you want is for every dot to be about half an inch apart.

Once you have the basic line of half inch spaced dots, then you can select the line, copy and paste in place, and move it a half inch down.

The rest is easy as pie! Continue to copy and paste the line of dots with half inch of spacing from each row.

It should only be in the light gray color and look as if it were faded into the background. It should give a technical and mathematical feel to the design.

Photography Matters

PHOTOGRAPHY MAT TERS Photographs should be either grayscale or edited with the simple ProuvĂŠ Navy overlay to complete the brand identity. The grayscale helps with mixing a variety of photos from different time frames.

Open the image in Photoshop.

Desaturate the image by going to Image > adjustments > desaturate.

For the colored part, create a new layer by using the dropdown menu Layer > New > Layer or use the shortcut for macs shift + command + N. Fill this new layer with the ProuvĂŠ Navy.

Make sure the layer is on top of the photo. To add the effect, use the Effects drop menu on the Layers panel and change to the Lighten effect.

Flatten the image using Layer > Flattening. Save image as .jpeg or any other kind of file needed.

Letterhead

LET TERHEAD The letterhead is very important in sharing your message professionally on paper and online.

Read below for the correct measurements and details on typography.

A

Align the right of the logo/pattern 2.5 inches from the left side of the page. The contact information should also be aligned with the logo.

The logo is displayed in Prouvé Navy.

The contact information is typed in Brandon Grotesque Regular 8pt/12 pt and in the color gray.

Make sure that the bottom of the logo aligns at 2.25 inches down the page. Only half of the top Prouve icon should be visible.

The message will be aligned to the left at 3.25 inches from the left side of the page.

The main text is typed in Brandon Grotesque regular with Prouvé Navy at 8pt/12pt. The typeface size may be altered as needed.

The top of the text of the message and the contact information will be aligned 3.5 inches down the page.

The letterhead should be printed on a gray 8.5” x 11” textured paper provided by the company.

Envelope Design

ENVELOPE DESIGN The envelope is the first contact our client will have with our message. In order to separate our mail from the junk, make sure that the envelope stands out.

A

Align the left of the logo/pattern 0.5 inches from the left side of the page. The contact information should also be aligned with the logo.

The logo is displayed in Prouvé Navy.

The contact information is typed in Brandon Grotesque Regular 8pt/12 pt and in the color gray. The envelope is made from a light gray stationary.

Make sure that the bottom of the logo aligns at 1.9 inches down the envelope. Only half of the top Prouve icon should be visible.

The contact information will be aligned at 2.25 inches from the top of the envelope.

The addressee will be aligned with the top of the contact information. It will also be left aligned 3.5 inches from the left side of the envelope.

The addressee line can either be typed or hand written. If typed, it will be in the same type style used as the contact information. However, it can also be typed in a larger pt such as 9pt/14pt.

The inside detail of the envelope is Prouvé Navy with the polka dotted pattern.

The folded flap of the envelope is a solid Prouvé Navy to give the envelope a pop of color.

Here’s My Card

HERE’S MY CARD The business card is extremely important for clients and others to know who we are and how to contact us. It is an easy way to be remembered.

The patterned part of the card will have “Prouvé Design” placed 3.18 inches down the card.

Please keep it centered.

The business card will have rounded corners. On the front of the card (where pattern and logo are) the rounded edges will be on the bottom left and upper right corners.

For the right part of the logo pattern, align the bottom-most part of the logo 2.6 inches down the card and aligned at 1.05 inches from the left side.

For the left part of the logo pattern, align the bottom-most part of the logo pattern 2.12 inches down the card and aligned at 0.97 inches from the left side.

On the other side of the card, all text will be aligned 0.34 inches from the left side of the card.

The top of your name will be aligned 1.3 inches down the card.

The typeface will be Brandon Grotesque bold in Prouvé Navy at 9pt/12pt in all caps.

The top of your status/job in the company will be aligned 1.69 inches down the card.

The typeface will be Brandon Grotesque regular italics in gray at 6pt/9pt in all lowercase letters.

Your address aligns at 2.35 inches down the card.

The typeface of the company will be all caps in Brandon Grotesque medium, while the rest of the address will normal case regular in gray at 6pt/10pt.

Finally, your phone number and email will be aligned 2.9 inches down the card.

The typeface for this will be the same as the normal address typeface/size and color.
