“Voorhees College: Begin. Believe. Become.” During the 2018-2019 academic year, Voorhees College rolled out a new tag line, “Voorhees: Begin. Believe. Become.” The new tagline signifies the journey one makes once they enroll at the institution. President W. Franklin Evans said he hopes the new tag line will continue to enhance the image of the institution. “I want our supporters to truly understand the significance of a Voorhees education. As students begin their journey, we want to show them that we believe in them and hopefully they will believe in themselves. We also want to ensure them that Voorhees will prepare them to become a trailblazer in this global society.”
“As president of the first black college founded by a woman, I will continue the mission that Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, our founder, started in 1897,” Evans said. Our new motto, ‘Begin. Believe. Become.’ will be the standard set as I continue to guide the institution toward becoming a premier liberal arts institution” -President W. Franklin Evans Voorhees College has produced trailblazers in many areas. Some of those many areas include medicine, politics, education, religion, and law. Jerome Geathers, a 1972 graduate of Voorhees College, has become a successful entrepreneur and continues to give to the institution. “I believe in the education that Voorhees provides,” Geathers said. “I encourage other alumni to donate scholarships back to Voorhees as well. Alumni had opportunities to receive a quality education and experience what Voorhees had to officer, so why not do the same for this generation of students.” As Voorhees continues to prepare its students, the institution reached many milestones. Voorhees was ranked in the 2019 edition of Best Colleges by the U.S. News & World Report. The institution was ranked 55th in the “Historical Colleges and Universities” category and 61st in the “Regional Colleges South” category. “These rankings show that the college is making great strides as we become a premier liberal arts institution,” President Evans said. Beginning July 1, Voorhees will offer its first fully online degree program in business administration. Approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and accredited by the Association of College Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the program will offer concentrations in general business and finance. Dr. Ronnie Hopkins, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the institution’s 2017-2022 strategic plan articulates the need to “assess and offer relevant, meaningful, and cutting-edge curricula.” “The decision to develop an online degree program stemmed from a desire by the college’s faculty and administrators to create avenues that would expand students’ alternatives to the traditional classroom setting and tailor their educational
delivery in a manner that is best suited for their real-life situations,” Hopkins said. Voorhees also added three additional new programs to the curriculum in public health, theological studies, and interdisciplinary studies. “As president of the first black college founded by a woman, I will continue the mission that Elizabeth Evelyn Wright, our founder, started in 1897,” Evans said. Our new motto, ‘Begin. Believe. Become.’ will be the standard set as I continue to guide the institution toward becoming a premier liberal arts institution,” Evans said. Voorhees student conducts research in breast cancer clinical trials Dawn Freeman, a junior biology major at Voorhees College, presented research on “Assessing the Trends of Minority Participation in Breast Cancer Clinical Trials,” at the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) Student/ Faculty Research Symposium during the 2018-2019 academic year. In this study, Freeman screened more than 150 clinical trials on Breast Cancer phase I, II, and III. She said the project enhanced her knowledge on breast cancer. “I am able to be more involved in lab research, network, and give scientific presentations. It is unquestionably setting the establishment for my future profession,” Freeman said. According to the research conducted by Freeman, African American females are 26% less likely to get breast cancer but 35% more likely to die from breast cancer. Poorer access to healthcare accounts for only a modest part of this disparity. Some evidence suggests that African American females are less likely to be represented in clinical trials. According to American Cancer Society, due to differences in the molecular genetics of breast cancer for African American females, it may be that the drugs/treatments developed in mainly clinical trials are not as effective in African Americans. Though African American women are much less likely than Caucasian women to get breast cancer, they are far more likely to die from breast cancer. This may be in part due to the historical under representation of racial minorities in breast cancer clinical trials. Breast cancer today is generally treated by surgery followed by adjudicative chemotherapy and/or target-

ed therapy. Dr. Zhabiz Golkar, associate professor of biology, said she was thankful to SCICU for funding the project. “This program and similar ones create scholarship activities to provide additional outlets for me to serve and foster the creation of a community of scholars. These are strong examples of high-impact learning practices that we value as part of the Voorhees mission,” Golkar said. Freeman will continue working on “Comparative Genomics & Evaluating Analysis of CRISPR Loci in E. coli,” as Golkar’s Summer research intern. This study is funded by the Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Research and Innovation Program.
Voorhees athlete competes in 2019 NAIA Outdoor National Track and Field Championship Voorhees College track and field athlete Thanton Jordan recently competed in the 2019 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor National Track and Field Championship high jump competition held in Gulf Shores, Ala. The competition had a total of 35 qualifiers for the high jump competition, and Jordan finished No. 5. He was named an NAIA All-America for being a top scoring finisher during the outdoor national championship. Jordan said as a freshman, he was nervous participating in such a high level competition for the first time. “The sky is the limit. I only wish to go up from here with continued experience and training. I will continue to compete for a better placement and title of National Champion in the years ahead,” Jordan said. Head Track and Field Coach Jeffrey Hughes said the competitors were fierce, but Thanton proved he was ready. “Many freshmen do not get this opportunity, and he embraced it finishing No. 5. This accomplishment will go down in the books

for Voorhees College and lay a foundation for him to build on,” Hughes said. Jordan is a freshman majoring in computer science from St. Matthews, S.C. The team is now finished for the season and looks forward to next year’s cross-country season.

Voorhees College holds 2019 National Alumni Association Convention The Voorhees College National Alumni Association (VCNAA) recently held its convention in Augusta, Ga. The three-day event engaged alumni members about the happenings at Voorhees. David Miller, VCNAA president, said the convention provides an opportunity to network and keep abreast of fellow alumni members. “I want to thank the alumni members for supporting everything the association and institution has done this year. I also want to salute President W. Franklin Evans, Dr. Gwynth Nelson, and the Division of Institutional Advancement and Development for their service,” Miller said. During the convention, eight new members were inducted into the third class of the Young Alumni 10 Under 40 Program. The Class of 2019 inductees include Captain Dominique Abner, Quillie Hunt, Jr., Trayvone Johnson, Tiffany Jordan, Cory J. Mikel, Alisha Nicole Sparks, India Williams, and Delacroix Johnson (posthumously). In addition, there was a series of workshops and informational sessions and a “Denim and Diamond” affair. The convention concluded with a Sunday morning worship service at Beulah Grove Baptist Church where Reverend Dr. Sam Davis, alumnus and Board of Trustee member, is pastor.
