letter FROM THE editor in chief Yay! It’s officially Derby!!!!! The long awaited annual Oaks and Derby festivities are upon us in Louisville KY and it is my honor and pleasure to present to you Vome’ Magazine Derby Special and a men’s Special too!

This weekend will be filled with hats, dresses, galas, day parties, bourbon, mimosas and a lot more as people from far and near, including of course a healthy smattering of celebrities, make it down to Louisville, just to participate in the Derby revelries.

Too bad I’m not good at the guessing game or gambling, I would have placed a couple of bets on the winning horse and perhaps hit the jackpot at the Derby races. LOL. As we approach the second half of 2017, the note to myself is to stay in my lane, pursue my dreams and goals, spend more time with family, pray and have faith in God, and just do it (Vome!). In another article, we will discuss the several types of trusts and show you how to qualify and protect your wealth transfer in a tax efficient manner for estate planning.

Next, we have our Income and Expense Management which consist of our income and our living expenses on a daily, weekly, biweekly, and monthly basis. I call this part of Financial Order, Sufficiency. You know what you make and you should see it as a tool for graduating to another level. Another source of your income can be by way of an outside business entity or a work-from-home business, or even real estate, whether it is a W-2 or FORM 1099 income. Expense management is the department most of us shy away from and only perform this strategy in our minds.

This dynamic must be done on a printed document to see the real effect of where you are and where you are going. We call this part a budget or let us call it “Your Road Map�. As we put together both the positive and possibly some negatives of past and present numbers in your plus and minus section, the calculations will create your Assets and Liabilities worksheet which will be calculated as your net worth. If you are in a negative state then it will show that your budget is in the red, based on the period being under con-

sideration. However, if your numbers are in the black then you are in a surplus position which shows that you are in a positive cashflow state.

Expense management can be a fun but very detailed strategy to create your financial freedom on paper first. There are over 2,333 scriptures on finance and money in the Bible and we need to take heed to find out where we are and what is needed for our greater good.

This next strategy is a very serious one that most people never graduate from completely in their budget, but it is possible with team work and a focused vision! Debt management or Debt Elimination (Deuteronomy 15:1-11) is a very important strategy and a building block to building great wealth. There are ways debt can benefit someone if they are starting a business or are already in business or trying to build or use credit on a regular basis for development in real estate. The one thing that we need to learn is how to manage or eliminate credit card debt. Most of us whom did not grow up in wealth already had a mindset of starting out in an ocean of red ink because of what we saw and heard at the dinner table with family and friends. So, when it comes to focusing on paying off debt we have to place them in a particular order. There is a strategy I teach people, and that is Debt Stacking. When the specifics of a debt is taken into account, such as the interest rate and total amount of debt, this strategy will identify a way for you to pay off your debt. First you must put all your debts in order, from the smallest to the largest and start with consistent payments on all of them. When you pay off the smallest or target account, you will roll the payment amount you were paying toward your next target debt account and you will start to see a stack or a snowball effect. As each debt is paid off you will see more light at the end of the tunnel so you will continue this process until they are all paid off with the same monthly payment funds that your started with. This will work best without creating any new debts during the payment process for as long as it takes.

Once you have paid your debts off this money that was used in this strategy can be used to building wealth on a consistent basis. There are other ways to

2. Would you say it is the most challenging role you have held thus far? Probably serving as Cabinet Secretary for Personnel for The Commonwealth of KY. I held that position for about three years. I worked for Governor Steven L. Beshear. That was the first time that I had such a big role with huge departmental responsibilities. Not to mention the role was fairly “political�. I was appointed by the Governor so I had responsibilities that were derived from my role as a cabinet member in his administration as well as the HR lead for the state, supporting 33,000 employees. I was 37 years old when I got that job. It was big and daunting and, at times, overwhelming. Still, I am so thankful that I did it and fought through my own insecurities about being suited for the position.

3. What has been the most challenging situation you have had to overcome professionally?

When I moved to Louisville initially in 2001, I worked for a local employer who had, hands down, the most toxic, arrogant-laced, non-supportive, privilege-ridden, and biased organization I have ever been aligned with. It was horrible.

Before then, I had the opportunity to work with several large Fortune 500 organizations where my work and work ethic had been held in high regard. Support systems and opportunities for development were in abundance. So this new work

environment was such as stark contrast to that one.

While there, I was disciplined for not managing my perception and failure to get along with co-workers. It seems as though some were “intimidated� by me and felt I was using “big words� at work to make myself seem smarter. As you might imagine, I was just outraged. In my view, all of that feedback amounted to covert racism, so I left. However, the experience was immensely frustrating as I felt helpless, unheard, stereotyped, muted and maligned.

So while ultimately I left the organization, I did so with a tarnished professional reputation. For that, as you can probably tell, I remain resentful.

However, it taught be a lesson in resiliency, clarity and insistence that I find employers with much healthier work environments. Thankfully, I have done just that.

4. What would be your advice to people out there who aspire to achieve and carve a niche for themselves like you have?

Niche? You think I have a niche? Ha! I regard myself as niche-less. I started out my career practicing labor and employment law with a small boutique firm. I then did labor law in house for Insurance TPA. From there, desiring to abandon the practice of law, I moved into Human Resources (HR) and worked for companies like Georgia-Pacific, Philip Morris USA, Norton Healthcare, and ADP. I have also worked for large public sector employers like the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Maricopa Community Colleges. Even within the realm of HR practitioning, I have held lots of roles from training, EEO/AA compliance, to HR Generalist and labor relations/contract negotiator. I have no niche. What I think I have done well though is leverage cross-functional skills. Therefore, I have had a career with boundless texture and dimension. These experiences have helped inform how I lead, how I work and how I approach work relationships. Frankly, I really wouldn’t want to have a niche. That’s just not for me.

5. How did it feel being included in the 10 most influential women of Louisville?

It was quite an honor. I think it’s important though, to be mindful that whatever influence I have, or people think I have, it is being used to uplift or support others. In other words, there’s no point in being perceived as a person of influence if the only person benefitting from it is you. For that reason, I am unapologetically relenting in my focus to help people who may need “influencers� in their lives and in their work. Historically, African-American’s, especially women, have not had influential people 70.& .BHB[JOF t .BZ

to count on to pave paths in the corporate world.

So I am hyper-focused on assuring these young women get the support, advocacy and leveraged influence they need to be successful.

6. What would you consider the sagest advice any one has ever given you?

Love your life. Choose joy. Seek peace. Look people in the eye when they are talking to you.

Thoughtfully convey gratitude.

7. Would you consider a career in politics?

Geez..it’s weird how many times people ask me that. A career? No. A short stint? Maybe. No one, in my view, should be a career politician. Term limits are important. It is too easy to become jaded, discouraged, compromised and ineffective if you are in that world too long. That said, I wouldn’t rule out public service in some capacity but I really have to think about the absolute assault on your privacy once you make a determination to run for office. For me, that’s a huge deal.

8. As a woman of color, would you say you have faced any discrimination in any role you’ve held so far?

Uh, yes, of course. There is nothing about my path, academic preparation or professional experiences that have exempted me from the realities of being black in this country.

9. How have you been able to balance your personal and professional life? I have yet to determine the right balance. I just keep trying. I have wonderful help by way of my support system so they assist with duties and responsibilities on the homefront. I have an employer who is incredibly open to flexible work and acutely aware of the need for balance. That certainly helps.

10. What would be your advice to young, aspiring women out there regarding the professional decisions they have to make?

I would say don’t rigidly anchor yourself to a set career path too early. So much of what we experience as growing professionals happens organically.

It happens based on the skills, knowledge, abilities and behaviors that begin to define our brand. Once that brand begins to evolve and you surround yourself with great advocates, influencers and mentors, opportunities for you will open up. Be ready to take those that make sense for you at that time.

You may very well find yourself departing from what you originally set out to pursue.

11. Would you say African American women have an enabling environment to grow professionally?

It’s hard to answer this for all workplaces. In general, based on my past experiences, I would say companies do a great job at erecting supportive structures to enable growth of black women but we fall woefully short in creating and modeling the kinds of individual, department and team behaviors that would enable success for us. I think there are so many employers who are earnestly trying to dig their way out of historic inattentiveness to diversity and very passive attitudes toward the debilitating impacts of prejudice in the workplace. That effort though, often manifests in the form of targeted “diversity” hiring or, my favorite, training; as if we have to train you on how not to be a @*%#*$(#* to someone who is not like you. Fantastic!

In general, I don’t overreact. Arguably, I underreact. It’s hard for me to assign importance to silly stuff. It helps that I am ridiculously forgetful too so often times I don’t retain negative situations too long. When I am bothered by something that seems to be beyond my control or incredibly daunting, I have a great support system that I use.

My friends are great confidants and advisors, as are my children. I am really blessed to have so many wise, caring and wonderful people in my life. In the end, that’s what matters, not the dumb stuff.

So I am being a little sarcastic but the point really is that the real work is in resetting hearts and minds. By the time we all reach the workplace, we would have had at least 21 years of existence under our belt. God only knows what that existence has taught us about “difference”. Whatever it is, you better know it is coming to work with us…with each of us. We are so busy talking about what we can and can’t say to one another at work but we spend little to no time delving into what we firmly believe or feel about others who are different. In my view, that’s where the work is because frankly, those belief systems, when rooted in prejudice and stereotypes, even if latent and not blatant, still seep through the workplace and impact decision-making, work culture and feelings of exclusion. So my experience tells me that there are still lots of stories out there about what a black woman is at work and those stories, that narrative, if you will, walks right in the door before you. It sits down in the seat you are about to take. It becomes the shadow that we (black women) either contradict, much to the delight of many people or embody, in keeping with the expectation of other people. Either outcome is unbeknost to us…whether in opening our mouths we have armed or disarmed you as it relates to what you thought we would be. All I can tell you is that many white folks are overjoyed to hear that I love hummus. I think it makes most of them feel like I am not all that different. To be clear though, as a rule, black people don’t eat smashed up chick peas; and, by the way, we are different. And that’s ok.

14. As a child, did you see yourself as someone who would someday attain the professional level you have reached today?

Sort of. I mean, I never consciously doubted the fact that I would graduate, have a great career and work in the community. I never affirmatively claimed it either. I suppose I just assumed that’s how it would work for me. Chalk that up to great parents who were always very encouraging and stressed the importance of being well prepared.

12. Do you have a moral or personal philosophy you adhere to when certain negative situations pop up?

13. What would you consider your favorite fashion accessory or look?

I love necklaces. I am talking really interesting, probably even imposing necklaces. I think the right one (hell, even the wrong one) can really alter an outfit.

Assessment of the US Congress defined biotechnology as “any technique that uses living organisms or their products to make or modify a product, to improve plants or animals or to develop microorganisms for specific uses.” This article will examine what biotechnology is and how location of the Global Biotechnology Research Park at Heritage West, in Louisville, Kentucky will provide a tremendous economic and educational benefit to both the city’s residents and the city as a whole.

Fundamentally, biotechnology is technology (chemical engineering, information, technology, robotics, etc.) based on biology (genetics, molecular biology, bio chemistry, cell biology, etc.) that is used in production of useful products and processes that affect many areas of our world. Biotechnology involves utilization of an organism, or a part thereof, to make

a specific product or process, which improves the quality of life in society. In short, biotechnology can be viewed or described as a “toolbox” for helping to solve problems relative to health, increased food production, cleaner energy, and drugs, for example.

Advances in biotechnology are aiding in resolution of many issues facing society. More than 250 biotechnology health care products and vaccines are now available. These include, for example, several for diseases that were previously untreatable, as well as those that help to reduce infectious disease rates. Odds of life threatening illnesses have been changed for the better and medical treatments tailored to fit individual needs, while reducing health risks and side effects, have been produced.

Establishment of more accurate resources for detecting diseases has also been invented.

There are currently several biotechnology research parks across the country. One of the top ranked and largest biotechnology parks, North Carolina Triangle Park (RaleighDurham, Chapel Hill) that includes Duke University, North Carolina A & T University and North Carolina Central University.

The Triangle Park consists of a large, diverse biotechnology workforce and a collaborative life science community. With over 200 companies housed in the park, and through collaborative efforts of business, government and universities, they have been able to provide meaningful jobs, improve access to education and improve the lives of their residents.

Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, located in the nation’s east coast pharmaceutical and biotechnology corridor, hosts 67 life science companies, research institutes and state and federal laboratories and is located near one of the top 100 life sciences research centers, Virginia Commonwealth University.

They employ approximately 2,400 researchers, scientists, engineers and support personnel, again providing meaningful jobs and improving the lives of their residents.

West Virginia’s park consists of the nation’s highest concentrations of agricultural feed-

stock, as well as, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Their park is inclusive of government programs that stimulate biomedical biotechnology research, funding and commercialization. Their research hubs include major research universities with the state, which attract resources and collaborative partners.

Global Biotechnology Research Park at Heritage West planned at the site of 30th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard, along the western border of the Russell Neighborhood.

Future plans will include on the first floor a children’s museum, state of the art incubator (an area for people to collaborate ideas/ projects to include offices for presentations), a 24-hour childcare facility for staff, faculty and students. The second floor and above would include biotechnology laboratories, offices, cubicles and classrooms for learning, innovation and inventions. Further development in the park will include a biotech museum, training center, an area designated for deliveries, a biotechnology parking structure, public parking, an amphitheater, a park, a grocery/farmer’s market, retail space, a railroad connection and a satellite campus area.

Housing improvements are planned for a two block radius of the park. Boundaries will include to the North (Rowan Avenue), South (Chestnut Street/River Park Drive), East (28th Street) and West (I-264 Shawnee Expressway).

Across the country, the biotechnology industry is attracting billions of dollars in investment funds. Securing a biotechnology research park in Louisville, Kentucky has many benefits for the residents of the city, as well as the city. Companies securing space in the park, as well as overall administration needs of the park, will require creation of thousands of jobs. Thereby, affording Global Biotechnology Research Park at Heritage West, the opportunity to serve as an effective solution to the problems of unemployment and under-employment. The creation of highly skilled jobs, with entry level salaries ranging from $60,000 to $80,000, and an increased workforce will be 31

immensely beneficial to the economic future of both residents and the city. The housing development surrounding the project will also improve causing an increase in area homeownership, appraisals, new home developments and mixed-use developments.

The economic success of this project leans on the involvement of educational institutions and workforce development cabinets to educate people to be part of a skilled workforce. A goal of this project is focused on delivery of an integrated, cooperative and coherent educational program that provides essential hands-on training, high quality education and sufficient numbers of trainees and students, to both meet and exceed the needs of the biotechnology industry cluster now and in the future. The educational component of the project desires to: (1) provide students with hands-on experience (basic and applied) and unique opportunities to be trained in key areas of biotechnology; (2) collaborate with existing and developing programs in the region and state to provide technical and logistical support in ways to motivate faculty, staff and students to participate in biotechnology training; (3) develop appropriate education and training tools to support the development of associate, bachelor, master and doctoral level degree programs; and (4) incorporate a life sciences labo-

ratory for youth from elementary to high school age to allow a creative learning environment that will foster development of innovative ideas related to health and life sciences. Cultivation of appropriate alliances with the community colleges, other academic institutions, state agencies and industries, with respect to program marketing, curriculum development, new degree offerings and specific concentrations, is imperative.

This project will also develop new undergraduate and graduate curricula/degree programs relevant to biotechnology. Students recruited from high schools will be provided opportunities to participate in several professional development activities that are designed to supplement and complement their formal classroom training. Additionally, the educational component will include certifications of trades to formal degree programs beginning with Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels as the program matures. Opportunities will also be provided for students to receive training in any or all of the modules offered. The undergraduate degree program will utilize traditional (formal classroom lectures and laboratories) as well as hands-on training with a faculty mentor during the academic year and summer and participation in other related activities such as field trips, workshops, seminars, etc. It is of the utmost importance that actions are taken to always seek to offer

VOMÉ the most cutting edge components that will attract students from across the nation and country. A major part of the educational component will be to pursue scholarships in emerging technologies in a fashion that integrates the interests of scientists, engineers and students.

The Development Team consists of experienced professionals in the area of real estate development and affiliates. Community-minded individuals, real estate agents, brokers, developers, architects, environmentalists, attorneys, experienced politicians and practitioners compose this team.

Kentucky should be a natural breeding ground for the rapid growing biotechnology industry. Support for this private investment has been received from the Mayor’s office, as it aligns with the goals of bringing high paying, innovative and entrepreneurial jobs to Louisville Metro, as well as increasing education attainment. Further, the project aligns with Louisville Metro Government’s commitment to revitalization of the West End of downtown Louisville through public support of private investment, as the government alone cannot generate the economy of jobs needed to break

The proposed initiatives for financing will include: CDBG, HOME, TIF (Tax Increment Financing), New Markets Tax Credits, Tax Moratorium and State Initiatives. An estimated project cost of over $200 million dollars is anticipated. The proposed construction occupancy timeline envisions completion in 2019 with initial groundbreaking is projected within the next 12-18 months. Louisville is becoming a global city with its residents looking for a better way of life that Global Biotechnology Research Park at Heritage West has both the vision and the plan to provide.

Home to major medical centers, hospitals, research centers and laboratories, along with its proximity to national pharmaceutical companies and multitude of venture capitalists, Louisville,

the cycle of poverty.

As Joe Lieberman stated, “The way we’re really going to grow the economy is to invest in people, to invest in innovation, to have the federal government put money in the kind of research that will create the new high-technology, biotechnology industries that will create millions of new jobs.”

This project will not only bring an economic change to West Louisville, but will also change the entire city in terms of business development, increase in attainment of college degrees, job creation and economic development.

Modern Dating and Communication

These are the many decisions modern daters’ face. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and texting have transformed the way we communicate when it comes to the dating world. The dating scene and the way we socialize has completely changed in today’s society. We can now meet potential suitors from the comfort of our own homes, simply by logging into social media, posting, and adding photos.

Texting and direct messaging have their advantages and disadvantages. If you’re dating just for fun, without the intent or desire for anything serious, then these forms of communication are perfect for you. If you’re dating with the hope of longevity or marriage then electronic communication, although great for initial contact or to add spice to your relationship, are not ideal forms of developing a new serious commitment. Daters should exercise extreme caution when utilizing electronic forms as the only means of communication in building a healthy relationship. It’s unrealistic that healthy and lasting commitments will be the end result if there is no verbal or face to face contact involved. Electronic messaging doesn’t take the place of personal contact, which is essential for all healthy relationships.

As a therapist, I have observed individuals that have fallen into a state of depression

over social media courtships. If you’re dating someone through social media and text messaging, it’s always best to monitor your emotions. If you find yourself falling quickly in love with someone you haven’t spoken with on the phone or face to face, it’s time to step back and reassess your emotions. This time of reevaluation could save you feelings of brokenness and rejection. Especially, if the other person uses social media as a way to distance themselves from serious relationships.

Many guys, use electronic communication as a way to distance themselves from meaningful relationships and intimacy.

Although, social media and other forms of electronic communication has changed the dynamics of the modern dating world, remember face to face conversations is still the best form of communication. Direct messaging, instant messaging, and texting can be fun and exciting, but when it’s time

I

often contemplate what my life would be like today if I never got pregnant at sixteen. What if I had the necessary guidance and mentorship that would have pushed me to try harder in school to take my education serious? Someone that would have encouraged self-love enough for me to wait or simply protect myself in regard to sexual intercourse? What if I did graduate high school and head straight to college? What if I actually had the opportunity to travel abroad as a young lady and discover the woman within me before I became a mother at such a tender age? But then I think about the writer in me, the poetess that my struggles have given birth to. Would she still exist if I hadn’t gone through what I did? Would there be any substance to my pieces? If I hadn’t lost myself so early on, what reasons would I have had to go searching? Would I still have the tenacity to succeed if I never had to fight for my mere existence amid

such chaos? Who would I be if not who I am?

I remember having a dream that seemed to be a bit far-fetched for a little bi-racial girl growing up in public housing: a little girl who had never even laid eyes on her biological father. I dreamt of going to school at NYU to study journalism, having tea with Maya Angelou and sitting beside Oprah Winfrey on that infamous couch as she endorsed a collection of poetry written by the hands of the little impoverished girl from the projects. I would sit inside of closets and on rooftops with a pad of paper on my lap, writing about things that were bigger than me, struggling to comprehend the significance of such a strong gift. I had been so focused, until I wasn’t.

I dropped out of high school my

freshman year. I had repeated the ninth grade a third time at this point. It had nothing to do with neither my mental capacity nor my interest in learning; I was simply unmotivated and unsupervised. If I did not want to go to school, I didn’t have to; it became a dangerous playground. My educators would become so frustrated with m; they saw through the nonchalant, tough girl act and would glare at my potential. But, I got mixed into the wrong crowd, became attentive to the wrong things and attracted to a life with no boundaries. I smoked marijuana, drank liquor, skipped school and hung out in strip clubs (I never danced, though). Subconsciously, I had become lost within this

world that was much scarier than the one I had fantasized of as a young girl. The tone of my poetry had changed drastically, and all of it was beginning to swallow me whole.

I had my first child when I was sixteen years old: a baby girl. I didn’t know who I was as a woman or the first thing about being a mom, but I knew the capacity in which my life was about to change was immeasurable. I re-enrolled into high school and transferred to the South Park T.A.P.P. The Teenage Program here in Louisville, Ky.) where I worked hard to earn the credits needed to place myself in the appropriate grade. Finally, I began to focus on and take my education seriously for myself and my child, but it was short-lived. I dropped out my junior year of high school in order to maintain the relationship I had with her father. Unfortunate yes, but this was at the expense of not knowing how to love myself first and foremost. In 2001, our relationship ended as our daughter entered into the first year of her life and this began another leg of my journey: survival.

In the years following, I would find myself struggling to sustain in a world I wasn’t ready for, and to make matters worse, I had to fend for a child. I was broke, broken and without the necessary tools needed to provide for the us. It became chaos and in June of 2004, I gave birth to my son. I was 21 years old with two children and life hadn’t changed much at all.

I was still in the midst of my struggle and without the necessary means to provide. I faced homelessness, domestic violence and so many other levels of dysfunction in every as-

pect of our lives. Prayer and poetry had always been my saving grace and I knew some things had to change.

In 2006, when my children were six and two years of age, I finally earned my GED, an equivalent to a high school diploma. It was an accomplishment I didn’t take lightly! In the years following, I would go on to fall in love, give birth to a set of twins, pursue an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science, maintain a career in the healthcare field and help to provide a healthy home & relationship for my little family. I wasn’t the same broken young woman that I was, but I knew there was still something missing from my life. I would reminisce upon that dream that I dreamt as a little girl, that special gift of writing poetry that I had harbored for so long. A gift that would always awaken me in the middle of the night. The gift that stayed with me through the storms. The gift that had become an outlet to my frustrations, anger, guilt and bliss.

The year I turned 30, in 2013, I began to chase that dream. I jumped into the poetry scene here in Louisville full force. I read my poems at different open mic venues and quickly began to build a following. My supporters pushed me to no end. They challenged me. I created an audio cd of five of my favorite pieces and sold almost 1,500 copies, hand to hand, in a matter of weeks. I was blown away.

At this point, most of my pieces were that of the erotica genre. I found it liberating to make sex sound so beautiful and poetic. But, in 2014 I was asked to perform at an event geared toward the empowerment of young black women. To this day, I’m still not sure how or why the organizer reached out to me, but I thank God

every day that she did. I had been so ashamed of all that I had been through, all that I had overcome, I found myself masking it. Not speaking of it, or writing about it. I had created a facade and this event challenged me to go deep; to write a piece that would empower myself and others. I won’t lie. It was a struggle. I went back and forth with myself, with my gift, with God. I was at a standstill, writer’s block. Then, one morning at 3am, the piece awakened me. I lay in bed and wrote a piece I would later title, “Because I am a Woman” in its entirety. I always recorded my new pieces into my voice recorder on my phone to keep up with the tempo I wrote them in. On my way to work the next morning, I listened to the piece. I had to pull over. It was like something I had never written before. I shouted and praised God for my gift because in that moment, I knew that I had set myself free through poetry.

The opportunities that followed were breathtaking. I performed this piece all over the city. I was one of the feature artists in a production titled “The Smoketown Poetry Opera” put on by IDEAS xLAB, it was phenomenal. We performed amongst Mayor Fischer and other city officials. Stemming from that production, I became one of the founding members of an artist-based group called Roots & Wings. The group that was awarded an $180,000 grant from ArtPlace America. We conducted workshops with the youth of inner city community centers and went on to play out their stories in front of hundreds in the Bomhardt Theatre at the Kentucky Center of

Vomė Ambassador the Arts in a production called “The West End Poetry Opera”. We performed at The Actors Theatre during The Festival of Faiths and so much more. It was exhilarating.

I made lifelong friends and family; and managed to leave pieces of my existence all over those platforms by simply speaking my truth.

In 2016, I decided to self-publish a collection that featured some of my greatest pieces. I titled it “Love, Relentlessly”. These pieces speak upon love in all its glory, the good, bad and ugly. More importantly, self-love and the lack thereof. In that same year, I acquired Robin G Poetry, LLC. It had become bigger than poetry for me, it became more about empowerment and living in a truth that was designed for me. I rid myself of the facade that I tried so hard to maintain and freed myself with transparency.

Most recently, this year an opportunity that I didn’t know that I needed, something I never even prayed for fell upon me. I was asked to host my own online radio show with Ice Entertainment, LLC at www.97thebeatfm. com. God is intentional. I’ve since used that platform to focus on those doing great things in the community, ordinary people doing extraordinary work. It airs every Saturday at 5pm. That is what Robin G Poetry is about, the ugly truths and beautiful chaos of my life and others. My children are my biggest fans. They inspire me to simply be. I struggle with balance, as all working mothers do, but I believe the gift in them seeing me pursue my dreams with the tenacity that I do, will stay with them for years to come. They see me. My life is far from what it used to be. I still struggle with so many things, but I do not chase perfection. My life is as it is because I was put here to tell stories, to uplift. My struggles will not be in vain.

I WILL walk in my purpose.

In the years to come, I hope to create a non-profit organization that focuses on self-love in regard to our youth, because that’s where it begins. I hope to reach out to those that feel bro-

ken, trying to raise whole children. I hope to inspire others to turn tragedy into triumph and to be inspired by their struggles, to push themselves further because of it.

A bad past is not the end-all to everything, it is a reason to push toward a better future. I think it is so dope when others reach out to tell me how much I inspire them, unbeknownst to them, it inspires me that I inspire!!

On those days that I’ve grown weary of marching in my truth, those messages give me life! Thank you. Oh yes, I am currently pursuing a nursing degree full-time, while working, parenting and writing my second collection, so please pray for me! “...... my Grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.....”

The beauty of it is that I will be inspired by my troubles, but saved by HIS grace. I can envision it now, even in the midst of the storm, from THIS there will be a phenomenal, God-fearing woman, biblically sound and financially stable. Humbled by the Glory she once ignored and freed by transparency and prayer. Fearless, for her trust in the Lord won’t even let her mind and heart go places it used to. A gifted wordsmith that will spread His gospel and saving grace in a language that women with her likeness will take to..... I see it because He showed me.

Vomė Ambassador What was your criteria for selecting the first cast members?

The cast had to be hardworking, career, independent women. Even if they were not already successful at their craft, they had to be on the journey towards achieving those career goals.

Since the goal of the “Real Naija Ladies of Dallas” is to empower women, it was important that the viewers saw strong women that could inspire them. The ladies also had to be willing to share themselves authentically. They had to be willing to bring their best and true selves and it was my job to translate that on camera.

So yes, that was the criteria.

What do you have to say to critics of the show who call it a Real Housewives knock off?

Poor critics, lol! At some point during the season, you actually see me address this. Knock off? We are Nigerians in a foreign land that we now call home; we have left our families be-

hind and work hard to make our mark in the United States. There is nothing fake about us or the show. There is Basketball Wives, Real Housewives, Ladies of London, Hollywood Divas etc. Have any of those franchises been accused of copying the other? It is what it is, we have a story, we have a right to tell it. We do not want to be like any other cast, we are the first Africans to have a reality show in the United States and there is nothing counterfeit about that. That’s a fact!

Can you elaborate more on this quote attributed to you: “You need me as an ally, make no mistake”?

Lolololol It’s a matter of fact. If I wasn’t me, I would want Jennifer Mairo as an ally. She is a boss, she gets things done. She is so kind and compassionate yet she makes no excuses and detests disloyalty. You only get one chance to cross her and after that you are done! So that’s what I meant. It’s better to make a friend out of me than an enemy, and in a combat with me, you will lose all the time. I make no apologies for that.

What would you consider the driving force or inspiration behind your successes?

I just cannot accept in my head and mind and soul that there is something that I cannot do. I am unable to live my life like that. So, for me, once I can think it, once I have the conviction, once I believe it, I go for it. I got married at 20 years old because I would make a good life partner. When I started schooling in the United States, I was working and raising a child with a very busy husband who was always out of the country. Multiple degrees and certificates after and I am still here. I just go for it. During filming of the Real Naija Ladies of Dallas I became pregnant but I refused to let it stop me.

The list goes on. I just know that I have it inside of me to do whatever I am determined. This is what I want young girls around the world to see and admire and cultivate.

When bad things happen to me, I do these things: I stay silent and soak in the situation. I do not let my emotions get the best of me at that point, especially when I have audience because I refuse to give other people (especially people I am not familiar with) the gift of my vulnerability. Next, I try to figure out what the Lord might be teaching me, and what God’s purpose is for the experience I am going through. Then I pray audibly and fervently, then pour my heart out to the Lord. My prayers are imperfect and not very eloquent, but God gets it. In fact, I believe God even hears my unspoken words and answers them. God answers every single one of my prayers; not in the exact order I ask, not the exact answers I request, nor the exact timeline I present, but I get answers. Sometimes they’re earlier than I had hoped and sometimes much later, perhaps answers I hadn’t anticipated, but nevertheless I get answers. After, I have prayed, I get to work. I try to find a solution to whatever situation I might be in and take steps to fix it.

Knowing that I have divine intervention matching my practical efforts gives me comfort and confidence.

Along my journey, both in Ghana and in the United States, God has strategically placed people I call angels along the way. They come in the form of friends and family and even strangers who in various ways have helped shape me to be who I am today. Through smiles, kind words and gestures, advice, encouragement, or just being there to listen; I have been nurtured and mentored in various ways. I have also had some really good bosses and spiritual leaders who have impacted my life in ways they may not even be aware. The road has not been easy, but I cannot say I have gone it alone.

I am surrounded by both divine and physical angels.

I am not perfect. I have never been and will never be, but my life is undeservedly good. There are many things I want in this life, some of which I will probably never have or achieve, but everything I need, I’m lucky to say I have. My goal in this life is to impact my world, this world in a positive way. Therefore, I wear a smile, I don’t worry about other people’s unsolicited opinions or comments about me, because I have very little control over those and it really doesn’t matter. I try to

be kind and respectful to everyone and expect the same. I love my life and people I have in it, because I believe they were handpicked by God for me. I do not compare myself with anybody else, as that is a losing battle. I work hard and give everything I do 100% of my efforts. If I fail it is not because I didn’t try hard enough but perhaps because it wasn’t meant for me, or to last that long.

Today, as an Immigration and Family Lawyer, and a working mother with my own practice. As a woman of African upbringing, I continue to face challenges, but I’m up for it. Without compromising on quality and excellent delivery of service, I desire to serve my clients with empathy. To bring comfort where there is stress, share smiles and happiness where there is anguish and pain and to generally be of help wherever, whenever and however I can. I wish to pass on my optimism and positivity to my children and to others, and help others whose path’s cross mine see that it’s going to be alrigh; no matter what!

I bask in the love and support of my family and friends, the joy of being a mother of three wonderful children, who themselves are running the race of life at their own pace and in their own way. I have the honor of serving clients, who like me, want a part of the American dream. To hear their stories, and be a small part of their journey is a privilege I don’t take for granted. I thank God that I am still here and still going and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing!

In this sit down with Tabitha Olatoyan., psychology major, aspiring Family Therapist and former Derby Festival Princess, Millicent Cahoon speaks about the highs and challenges she experienced in the prestigious role.

Why did you want to be a Derby Festival Princess?

I wanted to be a Derby Festival princess because I think it is a great way to earn a scholarship while exploring the commonwealth area in such a unique way.

It is a very exclusive college opportunity where I can connect with like-minded women and meet important people of the city.

How was it like being a Derby Princess?

Well, I was actually a Derby Festival princess and not a Derby Princess. So, I represented the Derby Festival. The Derby and Derby Festival are two different entities, but, as a princess, I had great access to every Derby event. I was a part of a royal court of 5 princesses, where we worked as ambassadors of Derby events. We attended over 75 events during the 3 weeks of the Derby season and met with the youth of the city. I was the spokesperson for the city, which involved letting others know how enjoyable the

events will be.

Did you become a Derby Princess simply because of the scholarship?

Of course not. I was actually informed about the opportunity through a previous princess who wanted me to do it for the amazing opportunities available from partaking in the Derby Festival activities. I really wanted to do it because I wanted the chance to meet new friends while having such a prestigious title.

What was it like being in the spotlight as a Derby princess?

Oh my goodness! It was so awkward at first having security and a camera in your face everywhere you go. But you get used to it. You really do feel like a princess with the complimentary food, services, and products! I absolutely loved feeling like royalty.

In 2016, you were the only minority/black woman, what was that experience like?

It is very common for the program to have only one minority; 2017 is the first year they had two minorities at the same time in a long time. But, I am used to being the only minority in many higher level projects I take on. It can be challenging at times and a bit of a culture shock. But, I am very good with rolling with the differences and I was so grateful to have such

an amazing group of people with me during the Derby Festival. I absolutely grew a bond with the princesses and our princess supervisors. I love them dearly.

Were there any challenges that you faced being a minority among your fellow contestants?

When we met with kids, you could see that many of them were attracted to the princesses who were similar looking to them. So, I saw many kids not wanting to come to me that much- until we went to predominant black areas.

When I was there, the children were absolutely excited. I had black girls scream, “Oh my gosh!

She looks just like me.” I also had one black girl tell her teacher, “I am not racist, but can I please get an autograph from the black princess”. Those types of encounters showed me why it was so important for me to represent them. They made my experience worthwhile.

Did you ever receive any backlash or feel any kind of discomfort related to your role as a Derby Festival Princess?

Yes! Definitely. One time, we were hugging kids at an event. I

went to one girl to hug her and she looked afraid.

Her older sister came up to me and said, “I think she is scared to touch you because you are black” ; that truly struck my heart., but, I continued on with a smile. But, it truly made me think about race relations I will always have to face- no matter how high a position I am in.

How has holding the title impacted your life?

It has enhanced my life in so many ways. I feel so much more confident and feel like I can speak to anyone in power with confidence. It has shown me how important it is to keep a positive attitude, even when it is your worse day. Being grouped with other young ladies I did not know, helped me to get out of my bubble of friends and learn something from others who are different from me. Most importantly, it has made me a lifetime role model in my community-someone people feel like their children can look up to-and I take that responsibility very seriously.

What is your message to young black girls who might be looking for similar opportunities?

My message to young girls is to always challenge yourself. Women must stay educated and proactive in this world, so we can have power as well. We make up the majority of the world, so we should have a say in how this world moves.

For black girls, please know that you are qualified for whatever position you aspire to occupy. Do not be afraid if you don’t see as many black women in a certain position; you can be the first. Black is beautiful and we are filled with so much magic to show the world!

What lesson stuck with you during your reign as a Derby princess?

My biggest lesson is to never take yourself too seriously. Yes, this position is a great responsibility and there are many things to be done. But, enjoy this once in a lifetime experience as well. Smile, relax, and laugh with everyone you meet on the journey because you are not only doing a job- but making memories for yourselves. The program is what you make it. This goes for every situation in life.

Would you recommend other young women to become a Derby Princess?

Yes! This was such an amazing opportunity. Being a Derby Festival princess is such a great addition to a college career. There is so much fun, relationships, and connections to be made through this!

The scholarship money is very helpful, but you really will just be so amazed by all the privileges it can bring and to see how much children truly look up to you. It will affect how you interact, work, and love for the rest of your life- guaranteed!

about finding that perfect someone. That someone to spend hours with on the phone talking about their hopes, their dreams and their fears. Someone they trust with their secrets and someone they trust with their life; someone to vacation with, someone to be their best friend. Their rock, that special person who will make their life complete.

Can you relate? Has this been you? Are you looking for that perfect mate? Awwww….

That’s so sweet! Let me tell you a story about my perfect man.

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a warm sunny day. The light was shining in my eyes, but I still saw the young man in a green button down shirt, talking to my friend. As he looked my way, I slumped down into the driver’s seat of my car. However, that didn’t deter him looking my way. In fact, it only made him stare harder, as if his curiosity had been peeked more. I didn’t want to acknowledge him. So, as not to appear rude, I sank down further in my seat and pulled down my sun visor. I applied lip gloss and pretended not to notice him. I didn’t want him to see me because I knew that if he did, he’d want to ask me out; and once he asked me out, he’d want to see me more; and if he saw me more, then he’d want to get married. Yes…I know what you’re thinking. She must be a goddess! No, but seriously. I’m no goddess. I just didn’t know if I was ready for all that sharing my life stuff. I had grown quite comfortable with just me and my seven-year-old son. I had learned to be strong and independent through life circumstances and I didn’t need the distraction of a man in my life. I’m not nor was I ever an, “I don’t need a man” type of woman by any stretch of the imagination; I just knew my worth, as I hope you, the reader does, as well. I have to laugh at myself, because I seriously believed him experiencing

just the mere sight of me would eventually end up with him eventually proposing. As, you continue reading you will find, I was right! Okay…now that you’ve finished laughing let’s get back to the story.

Fast forward a few months. He tracked me down, and we had been going out pretty steadily. I wouldn’t call it serious…I was one of those daters who did not like to assign labels. You know; just in case I decided to get ghost. Hey! It happens. Yadayada, we’re dating or whatever and at one point in the “relationship” he tries to get rid of me. Anyway, I just ignored him because that’s not how it works with this lady. “No sir! It’s not over, until I say it’s over!”

I just smiled. I shook my head thinking, “Bless your little heart”, and let him make it. Clearly, he was tired and overworked because no one in their right mind gets rid of perfection. “Right ladies? Right!”

Sometimes it’s our job to gently show these men the err of their ways. That is exactly what I did when that sweet young man thought he could throw away a priceless work of art. I wouldn’t stand for it and simply recast my line and reeled him in without so much as a fight. Two months later he proposed with the ring he had been carrying around in his pocket for about three months. Once that wonderfully intelligent, sweet, caring, always loving and doting man got over his fear; he built up enough courage to pop the question. I said, “Yes.” We had a beautiful wedding on a budget. It makes no sense to have this elegant and elaborate affair out of mere pomp and circumstance when your main focus should be building a life together. So many couples spend money they can’t really afford or would be better off saving on weddings, when their main focus should be building a strong and lasting marriage. Beautiful overpriced dresses are great, but they’re just that; beautiful pieces of fabric that will be worn once and then tucked away into

storage.

Instead of spending thousands on a wedding, make sure you have enough funds put away for a comfortable nest egg. Most people won’t remember your wedding in six months anyway.

Instead, invest in a credible photographer. The photographs he or she captures of your special day will be a cherished heirloom that your family can pass down through the generations.

So many girls dream of that fairytale wedding where they marry their knight in shining armor.

A handsome prince locks eyes with you from across the room. It’s destiny! You fall in love and he sweeps you away to a magical kingdom where you will live forever in happy married bliss. That’s until you actually say, “I do!” and have to share a roof with the man who once loved and doted on you. Suddenly, you’re left wondering if you woke up in the twilight zone and dreading that everything your father told you about the love of your life is true. Your new husband is an Ass! Who is this man with the face of your husband, lover and friend? How could you have missed such an important flaw in the man of your dreams? Who the hell is this idiot in front of you?

But, most importantly, did you make a mistake?

Marriage is not for the weak, meek or faint of heart. This is a serious lifelong commitment that will include arguments, sacrifice, many days and nights praying to God to save your spouse from your own hands. Yes, there will be days only God will save you from using your own hands from choking until death, the love of your life because you did not know they could get under your skin so bad!

Whooooh! I had to take a deep breath on that one. I got frustrated just thinking about how bad my husband gets on my nerves. I thought I was marrying this thoughtful, loving, caring and intelligent man.

However, I soon came to discover, he is often a careless, sloppy, video game playing man-child

who sometimes makes me scratch my head. I look at this man who holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and works in his field at Ford as supervisor and I ask myself, “How the hell can someone so smart, be so damn stupid?” It truly baffles my mind. This isn’t just my issue. No, not at all. I’ve asked other wives if they encounter the same level of sheer ignorance and they all say that they have. So, what I’m saying ladies, is marriage is no fairytale. It takes time, it takes work and it takes patience. Lots of patience!

Let’s talk about patience. It’s not just patience on our part, our spouses must have patience with us as well. Although, we hate to admit it, there are times when we mess up. It’s rare, but it’s true. We too, have issues and make mistakes. That’s why it’s so important that we grow in our marriages with our spouses. You must be able to endure anything that may come. Whether it be financial, extramarital, medical, mental or emotional because life has a funny way of hitting you when you’re not paying attention. Never take anything for granted. My husband is very patient with me. He has endured an illness with me. It has not been easy, but we manage. Marriage is not a game that you can quit whenever you get tired or bored. It is a lifelong commitment and him being by my side during this ordeal is proof of his resolve to make our marriage work. One issue where vows must be taken seriously is the issue of sex. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about seven years ago, but even prior to diagnosis there were signs that something wasn’t quite right. My symptoms have varied from mild to severe. I’ve had slight hand tremors to being bed ridden for up to 12 weeks. It has been extremely difficult for me to deal with and I’m sure just as difficult for my husband to handle, as well. During the times that I’m sick I can’t take care of our home well and meeting his

physical needs is a challenge too. It takes a man with a strong resolve and a man who truly loves you to be able to stick by you in this situation. Many women in my multiple sclerosis support groups are not as blessed. Sadly, their husbands left them because this disease and other chronic illnesses can severely strain relationships. I am happy that I am blessed with a man who loves me enough to make our marriage work even through the tough times So, before you allow frustration get you to the point where you throw in the towel and give up your dream for true love and your perfect someone; don’t give up hope! Wonderful men exist and they are not extinct. It may not happen the way it happened for me or your best friend, but that’s okay.

Their love and perfect union is for them and them alone. Don’t worry about or compare your happily ever after to anyone else. Your love story will be special, and that perfect man will be for you and you only.

Before I bid you adieu, I have some advice. Stop worrying about your love life or lack thereof; just enjoy life and getting to know yourself, completely.

Don’t search for the “perfect” man, because sometimes what we have in our mind of perfection isn’t at all what’s perfect for us. You never know, the “perfect” man may be closer than you think.

etter known for the musical talents in her family, Dominique started modeling in 2005 and her first billboard feature was for the Healthy Start Program campaign which featured Dominique and her then 4 month old daughter, Mariyah. Together, they became the headline models for that campaign. For 7 consecutive years, she would be seen in advertisements and brochures in clinics, hospitals, public transportation, buses as well as billboards in inner cities and even abroad.

She was again drawn back into modelling years later when a photo was needed for a church flyer advertising her as one of the featured artists to sing for a program. Dominique, whom at the time did not have any photos suitable for the task, was tagged by her sister-in-law on a Facebook post by Joe Goodwin, a photographer. Shanetta believed that the two of them would work magic. Needless to say, that photoshoot for a church flyer launched Dominique back into the modeling world.

Francis Lewis of Ann-DeEvelyn Company gave Dominique her first chance on the runway and Joe Goodwin, helped by giving Dominique tips to help ease her nervousness. Soon after, Dominique began to receive bountiful modeling requests to appear in front of cameras and on various runways in and out of state, including New York Fashion Week, Mid-West Fashion, Avant Protege’, KMAC, All Is Fair In Love & Fashion, Cynthia Bailey’s Model Camp and Runway Liberia International. Although Her rise was quite swift, Dominique adjusted beautifully. Her grace, focus and natural abilities has opened many doors for her and she has been featured in many magazines and editorials.

In Feb 2016, Dominique saw an ad by Heyman Talent Agency posted in Louisville Models and mustered the courage to audition. To her surprise, she was offered representation. She has modelled both in 2016 and 2017 for The Macy’s Kentucky Derby Fashion Show and Her Scene Magazine.

Late in the summer of 2016, Dominique landed her first cover feature in Louisville Modern Magazine Anniversary Edition, styled by Gunnar Deatherage from Project

onfidence! Confidence portrays so much beauty and strength, yet somehow always seems just out of reach. Why? We don’t believe we deserve it or fail to see what we have to feel confident about, that’s why.

Do not forget your strengths by focusing on weaknesses, because we all have those too. BUT weaknesses do not define us-our strengths define us. Something else to remember; you are stronger than you think. You may not believe so, but you have the power to change everything. You have the power to turn your life into something beautiful. You are reading this post and stepping out to love yourself more, then in turn love others more, and then have the potential to change the world. Yes, YOU! Each of us have that power and simply moving, or even desiring to move, towards a positive place speaks volumes.

Be confident in what you can do! Trust in yourself and the changes YOU can make and that can happen in you. We all have to start somewhere; I did. I knew I couldn’t keep halfliving and things didn’t change in one day. I knew change was possible and that I could be that change. I did gain confidence in God, but I still had to take the necessary actions.

If I can do it, you can too.

Take those steps and remember how wonderful you are.

Own your confidence and tell yourself you can do this. You can change your outlook, your focus, and the message you share. You Can!

Take a few moments to quietly reflect on confidence and recognize what you have to offer; you have something! Focus on that throughout the day. Leave behind a legacy of Greatness!

Dear Black men, You are strong, intelligent, courageous and tenacious.

You are filled with love, patience and knowledge.

You are not enslaved

Your queens need you, your kinship needs you, your community needs you, the society needs you! We need your beautiful black soul!

You are not conquered

We need you ALIVE!! You MATTER!!

You are not a statistic or status quo

You are not confused You are not defeated You are not weak You are not illiterate, jail bound or a criminal You are not an ingrate You are not ugly, rather, you are super fine You are not just a baby daddy or a deadbeat You are not your ancestors but a product of your ancestors You are not a prisoner You are not an angry black man You are not invisible You are not a “playa” YOU ARE A KING!!!

You are distinguished, strong, God-fearing, bold, intelligent, resilient, confident, kind, and brave. You are dope and chocolate fine! You are an achiever of great things. You are a shining example to our young boys and we celebrate you!!! You are not invisible to us, we see you, we feel you, we love and honor you, we salute you, our King!!!

You are dark and surely lovely; you are fair and just as fine. Your skin shines like a refined diamond!

You are not the product of a dark past as you once believed, you are strikingly

strong, you were made in the image and likeness of God, and in you lies a raging pressure to perform well in all facets of life.

Know that you got this! Why? Because in you lies an equal amount of courage and workmanship that is ready to perform.

Know that by heritage you are a prince!

You are destined to be GREAT! Our sons must emulate your confidence, strength, courage, and workmanship!

We as women believe in you, we look up to you, we adore you, we love and appreciate you! We see your pain and challenges, we see the fear in your eyes and the struggles and challenges strapped on your shoulders, we appreciate your hustle, we think you are the best thing since sliced bread, we cherish you! We are excited for everyone to see the latest Feature. Under the Surface, this movie is a production of Edus Through the Human Lens, a team of Independent Filmmakers from Louisville Ky. Local Actors are part of the casting like, Ed Fessler, Ariana Alvarado, Silvana Lara, Asly Toro, Erik Kyr, Katie Stewart from “Overtime” movie and from “EMPIRE” a Series of FOX TV. The movie was directed and written by Edus Herdezoje from Oaxaca Mexico. After that she made his debut as a Cinematographer and executive producer in the film In Dangerous Minds, she wrote her first screenplay and took the risk of completely produce “Under the Surface” the has been submitted to different Film festivals for Next Year. The plot of the Film focus on a world issues, like Child abuse, Discrimination, Sex Traffic and OrganDonation.

Edus is casting for the movie “Whispered by an Angel” and starting to film in 1 month.
