Si je regarde ma photo de 5ème, je me rappelle avoir demandé à mon dentiste de m’enlever mes molaires pour avoir l’air plus maigre : la minceur était alors à la mode. Heureusement, il a éclaté de rire. J’ai donc décidé de m’aspirer les joues de l’intérieur (ma chirurgie esthétique à moi) mais les choses ont commencé à se compliquer quand l’élastique de mon appareil dentaire a lâché alors que j’embrassais un garçon- le pauvre l’a reçu en plein dans l’œil ! Ah, les joies de la jeunesse ! Comme de nombreuses femmes, j’ai mis beaucoup de temps à m’accepter. Et même si les critères de beauté ont lentement commencé à évoluer dans les années 80, je ne peux toujours pas feuilleter un magazine et y trouver ne serait-ce qu’une seule femme qui me ressemble. Heureusement, les choses sont enfin en train de changer et Internet y est pour beaucoup ! Il m’est possible aujourd’hui de m’adresser à toutes les gamines qui se mordent les joues et j’ai bien l’intention d’en profiter !

La plupart des magazines ont tendance à n’avoir pour cible qu’un seul type de femmes : les minces, les vieilles, les rondes etc. Dans VOLUP2, vous trouverez beaucoup de photos de femmes rondes (puisqu’on les voit très rarement ailleurs), mais vous y verrez aussi des femmes minces, handicapées, âgées etc. Bref, toutes les femmes que l’on croise dans la rue tous les jours. Notre but c’est d’encourager tout le monde à s’aimer, quelle que soit son apparence. C’est notre ligne éditoriale et nous nous y tiendrons!

Dans le 1er numéro (“Ecstasy”), toutes les photos ont été faites par moi et vous n’y trouverez aucune publicité. Vous pourrez donc vous faire une idée de mon projet et j’espère que vous serez nombreux à vouloir participer à notre prochain numéro qui aura la féminité pour thème. Je tiens à remercier les traducteurs, les mannequins, les designers, les retoucheurs, Cynthia (Green Couch) ma designer, et tous ceux qui m’ont aidé à faire que ce magazine devienne réalité. Peut-être qu’il ne ressemble pas à ce à quoi vous vous attendiez alors...attendez-vous à l’inattendu ! 0)

Looking back on my 7th grade school photo, I recall asking my orthodonist to have my back teeth removed so I might appear more gaunt, Skinny was in! Luckily he laughed me off, thus my independant surgery consisted of sucking my cheeks in at all times, which was certainly reinforced when one of my orthodontic rubberbands detached mid-flirt, only to smack the class hottie in his eye. Ah, the joys of youth! Thus, like most women, my journey to self acceptence took awhile. And while the Beauty ideal has changed somewhat since the 80s, I still can’t pick up a magazine before a flight, that may have a women or two, who bares any mild resemblance to me! Happily, times are changing and the internet is allowing for alot of empowerment. I’m now in a position where I can try to make a difference to all the cheek sucking children out there, and I am aim to do so! Most magazines seem to segregate women, all thin, all older, all plus depending on the publication. While VOLUP2 has an abundance of plus size imagry (because media very much lacks such imagry), you will also find thinner women, differently abled women, older women, what you see in your everyday life really. We want to encourage people to love the skin their in, and we put our money where our mouth is. Our premiere edition of VOLUP2, the Ecstasy edition, is a bit different in that all of the editorials are shot by me, and I chose to leave out advertising this time around. This way people get a feel for our publication and hopefully will be excited about contributing to our next issue, whose theme is Femininity. I’d like to thank my translater, the models, the designers, the retouchers, my designer Cynthia at Green Couch, and everyone who helped make our magazine a reality. Our magazine is different from what you may expected so, expect the unexpected ;o)

Passion Fruit Soup Soupe aux fruits de la passion Patrice Caillot, Executive Pastry Chef Le Cirque and Circo, Bellagio, Las Vegas, Nevada 702-693-8150

Ingredients • 1 cup plus 1 teaspoon of sugar • 1 cup frozen passion fruit puree • 2 oranges, peeled, pith removed, and sectioned • 2 passion fruits, about 4 tablespoons fresh passionfruit pulp and seeds • 1 mango, peeled, flesh scooped into balls • 4 sage leaves • 1 egg white, lightly whipped • 1/2 cup fruit sorbet

Ingrédients pour 4 personnes : 245g de sucre+1 cuillère à café 240g de fruits de la passion réduits en purée et surgelés 2 oranges pelées, débarrassées de leur peau blanche (pelée à vif) et coupée en quartiers. 2 fruits de la passion+ 4 cuillères à soupe de pulpe de fruits de la passion frais et les graines 1 mangue pelée, la chair découpée en billes 4 feuilles de sauge 1 blanc d’œuf, légèrement battu 120g de sorbet de fruit

Mix together 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of frozen passion-fruit puree in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Remove pan from heat and allow soup to cool. Pour soup into a pitcher and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled (1 hour or overnight). Brush unblemished fresh sage leaves with a very thin coat of egg white. Dip leaves in the remaining sugar. Place leaves in single layer on a parchment- lined sheet pan. Dry overnight or for several days. Decoratively arrange the mango balls and orange sections among four shallow soup plates. Scatter the passion fruit and seeds over the mango and orange. Divide the chilled soup among the four soup plates. Place a small spoonful of fruit sorbet in the middle of each soup plate. Top with a crystallized sage leave. Serves 4

Recette : Mélangez dans une casserole 25cl d’eau, 245g de sucre, et la purée de fruits de la passion surgelée. Amenez à ébullition. Enlevez la casserole du feu et attendez que la soupe refroidisse. Transvasez la dans une cruche et couvrez avec du film plastique. Laissez refroidir au frigo (1 heure à toute la nuit). Avec un pinceau, brossez les feuilles de sauge non abimées avec du blanc d’œuf. Panez-les avec le sucre restant. Etalez-les côte à côte sur du papier sulfurisé. Laissez sécher toute la nuit ou pendant plusieurs jours. Prenez 4 assiettes à soupe et disposez au fond de façon décorative les billes de mangue et les quartiers d’orange pelés à vif et par-dessus, la pulpe de fruits de la passion et les graines. Divisez la soupe glacée en 4 parts égales dans les assiettes. Placez une petite quenelle de sorbet au milieu de la soupe avec par-dessus, une feuille de sauge cristallisée.

Ingredients • 2 cups milk • 3 cups water • 20 rose petals, washed • 12 ounces sugar • 1 cup of lemon juice • 2 Tablespoons rose petal water • Grenadine (optional)

Ingrédients pour 12 portions : 1/2 l de lait 3/4 l d’eau 20 pétales de roses lavées 340g de sucre 1/4 l de jus de citron 2 cuillères à soupe d’eau de rose Grenadine (en option)

In a saucepot bring the milk and water to a boil; add rose petals. Let infuse for about 10 minutes; strain the liquid and add the sugar. Allow a few minutes to dissolve; add the lemon juice and rose petal water.

Recette : Dans une casserole, versez le lait et l’eau et chauffez jusqu’à ébullition. Ajoutez les pétales de roses et faites infusez pendant 10 minutes. Filtrez le liquide et ajoutez le sucre. Attendez quelques minutes pour qu’il se dissolve, puis ajoutez le jus de citron et l’eau de rose.

Chill and put in the ice machine. To serve place two scoops of sorbet in a martini glass; drizzle over the top a little grenadine and garnish with crystallized rose petals. Serves 12

Laissez refroidir au frais puis versez dans votre sorbetière. Pour servir, placez deux boules de sorbet dans un verre à martini. Décorez avec quelques gouttes de grenadine et des pétales de roses cristallisées.

Yield: 2 cocktails • 12-14 regular-sized ice cubes • 1/2 cup each fresh orange, lemon and lime juice • 2 dashes grenadine • 1 large egg yolk, beaten lightly (optional) • 2 splashes soda water • 2 maraschino cherries • 2 slices orange In a shaker, combine the ice cubes, orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, grenadine and egg yolk (if using). Cover and shake vigorously. Strain into 2 medium glasses. Add a splash of soda water to each.

As a fashion blogger, I am always happy to be photographed, so I jumped very high when Velvet asked me to be her last minute model. There’s nothing more glamourous than a photo shoot in Paris. Because I’m a very self-made gal, I rarely get the opportunity to collaborate with hair and make up and stylists. This time I needed a major team to transform into the martyred Hollywood glamour icon Sharon Tate. Now, Ms. Tate wasn’t known as an hourglass bombshell like my heroes Jayne Mansfield and Jane Russell, but while researching her signature look I came to see her as uber-femme and soft in the time of the Twiggy revolution. I hope you all enjoy the result of this day of pastels and plumes in Paris as much as I did! My photo shoot experience with Velvet was nothing short of amazing! Never before have I felt so comfortable in front of a camera, and Velvet really knows how to bring out the best in people whether complete amateurs or professionals. My pictures are of the highest quality, and it’s the first time I’ve enjoyed looking at photos of myself! Hopefully Velvet will be back in the UK soon, so I can get another chance to have some fantastic photos taken. Thankyou, Velvet, for a brilliant time! ~ Heather-Marie Working with Velvet was something I will never forget and would love to repeat! She made me feel at ease, she made me feel beautiful and it was a special one of a kind experience. She knows how to work it on both sides of the camera and is truly an inspiration. xx Georgina Après la surprise d’avoir été choisie par VELVET, j’étais toute excitée à l’idée de jouer les Mannequins, moi.... la grosse de 50 ans ! c’était jubilatoire ! tout d’abord, le choix des vêtements et les essayages...jouissif et puis une journée avec VELVET ! dans la bonne humeur ! je me suis retrouvée perchée sur des talons improbables, à poser dans différentes tenues sous l’oeil de Velvet, photographe bienveillante. Quand j’ai vu les photos, je me suis trouvée belle....merci Velvet, ça m’a fait du bien....merci, merci, merci ! ~ Cathy Faire mon premier shooting avec Velvet d’Amour a été et restera, pour moi, une expérience inoubliable. Représenter les femmes rondes en toute simplicité est une grande fierté. Si j’avais un message à faire passer à toutes les femmes, ce serait : “ N’ayez pas peur de vos rondeurs : elles sont source de bonheur !”. En toute humilité, essayons de faire évoluer les normes de la Beauté. Les formes ne sont plus tabou, osons les montrer. Le mannequinat grande taille peut devenir un moyen de les faire accepter. ~ Marie Modelling for Velvet d’ Amour was everything I expected it to be and more. There were feathers, there were sequins, there was even barefoot dancing in the dark and I am happy and proud to be part of something so glorious and unashamedly creative in the name of high fashion against body shaming. Shooting with Velvet -a woman who really understands the plus-size body a work of art and not as a ‘problem area’ that needs fixing - was a real treat and something that every fat girl needs to experience at least once in their lifetime. J’ai passé vraiment un moment magique :) je me serais cru chez moi. Puis fut arrivé le moment de la séance photo et c’était un pur kiff, vraiment, tu m’as mis tellement à l’aise, j’avais l’impression de poser devant quelqu’un que je connaissais, tu étais gentille, rigolote, naturelle. Tu es une photographe de talent et je ne doute pas un instant que ton magazine aura un grand succès. Tu me montrais comment me positionner, quelle attitude adopter et c’était super. C’est passé beaucoup trop vite bien entenDu plus on est heureux plus le temps passe vite. C’etait déjà l’heure de partir, on a tout rangé, on s’est dit au revoir, tu as tout de suite accepté de poser sur la photo à côté de moi :) Et je suis rentrée en train chez moi avec des étoiles dans le yeux, la tête dans la lune et avec des souvenirs merveilleux. <3 ~ Jessica Reves
