It’s that time of year again. The one where we can finally unbury from the snow and go outside. In Wisconsin, we cherish our summer months closely, and try to do anything and everything we can while soaking up the sun. Music is definitely no exception. In the Chippewa Valley, we have a stunning music scene, and it never blossoms as beautifully as it does in these precious summer months. From major music festivals, to outdoor concert series, to bar shows, to one-off concerts, music in the great outdoors is where it’s at. So take a look at our newest special section and start planning your musical summer.

Music Festivals take some of the biggest names in the music industry, and make a weekend of it

Eaux Claires

Last year’s Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival (pictured above) was shrouded in mystery all spring. “Is Kanye West gonna be there?” “The name seems kinda confusing...” “What’s all this art stuff all about?” “Seriously, WHERE’S KANYE?!” It wasn’t until they opened the gates on the first day of the festival that we could get the full scope of everything (and ... no Kanye) that had previously only been brewing in the brains of Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Aaron Dessner (The National), and creative director Michael Brown. Various art installations lit up the grounds with delightful weirdness while musical acts from nearly every conceivable genre took to the stages and wowed Chippewa Valley audiences with sounds you don’t hear around here that often. Now in year two, Eaux Claires looks to capitalize on its inaugural successes with an even more bombastic lineup of musicians: R&B queen Erykah Badu, thundering UK producer James Blake, soft rock legend Bruce Hornsby, hazy indie rock darlings Beach House, alt-metal heroes Deafheaven, fierce rapper Vince Staples, and psych-rock heavy-hitters Unknown Mortal Orchestra make up merely a few of the highlights on this year’s crazy lineup. And of course, we’ll get a headlining set from Bon Iver as well the only live performance of the Day of the Dead, a enormous, star-studded tribute to The Grateful Dead. Bluegrass, for being a somewhat niche genre, has a passionate and fun-loving audience all over the globe. So it’s no surprise that the Blue Ox Music Festival, which also made its debut last year, is quickly gaining fiery support in the area and reverberating across the country as one of the best music festivals for the entire genre. Seriously, the caliber of acts the organizers (who also put on Country Jam later in the summer) have been able to bring through our humble community is astounding, and it’s crazy to think that it all almost got washed away last year. Mid-weekend, powerful summer rainstorms picked up and unleashed a torrent on Blue Ox’s

first-ever crowds and turned the Whispering Pines Campground into a Woodstock-level mud pit. “The rain was almost unbelievable,” said Jim Bischel, president of Country Jam and Blue Ox. “We got almost six inches of rain over the course of three days. As far as country music festivals go, we’re blessed to have two amazing ones in our proximity. This year, Cadott’s Country Fest is celebrating its 30th anniversary of bringing huge country stars our little corner of Wisconsin. It’s a big year for the festival, which has grown into something truly special in the heart of the Dairyland. This year, the headliners are ripped right from the top of the country charts with Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, and Sam Hunt bringing their down-home stylings to delighted country fans from all over the state. The 30th anniversary celebration boasts o ver 50 bands, and if that doesn’t satisfy you, maybe the huge variety of food vendors, interactive games, carnival rides, photo booths, and good times will. But you should stay for the music.

IF You’re going to rock out at rock fest, make sure your hair game is on point.

Rock Fest in Cadott is nothing short of a celebration of the hardest, most badass music that exists today.

Heading up the festival is Slipknot, who are gearing up to unleash some pure metal punishment on local crowds. Catch special performances by huge bands like The Hollywood Vampires (made up of Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, and actor Johnny Depp), Marilyn Manson, Alice in Chains, Five Finger Death Punch, and Rise Against. There’s no shortage of capital-R Rock at this annual party. And if this is your thing, this year the festival is adding other stuff to mix including freak shows, sideshows, and tattoo parlors. Rock fans are clamoring for tickets (the initial presale sold out in under two hours), so get yours quick or run the risk of missing out on Rock Fest in the flesh. Country Jam

Arguably the Chippewa Valley’s biggest party of the year, Country Jam is back for their 27th year (30th if you count the first three years when it was called Shake, Rattle, and Roll). This year, the festival grounds south of town will light up with country music’s biggest stars swinging through Eau Claire for three days of cowboy boots, beer, and the Chippewa Valley sunshine. This year is headed up by Jason Aldean, ACM’s Entertainer of the Year, plus a slew of unbelievable huge acts like The Band Perry, Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, and Clare Dunn. “It’s a hugely popular genre of music for one thing, and the events are fun,” said Bischel. “It’s high-energy and a fun crowd. We endure lengthy winters, and our summer skies are short-lived. Our northern lifestyle looks like toughness, but it’s not just being tough. We believe hard work leads to good times.

Perhaps that’s why when the weather is beauti-

ful, it’s truly beautiful to us here … we’ve spent the prior months inside, working hard and enhancing our dreamy interpretation of northern summers and what that means.

When summer finally arrives, we look forward to one of the most significant aspects of

summer living – outdoor music. Over the past few years, the abundance, attitude, and accessibility of small-scale outdoor concerts in the Chippewa Valley has become a sincerely extraordinary, distinctive experience.

There are at least a dozen weekly outdoor concert series on six different nights of the week throughout the Chippewa Valley (not including regular venues that offer outdoor performances sporadically, larger outdoor festivals, and indoor concert series). Depending on the day of the week, there could be more than 3,000 people attending an outdoor concert series per night and up to 10,000 attending per week from June

Each concert series definitely brings its own panache, but together they create a synergy that shows off the richness of musical styles represented in this area and the talent possessed within each. to September – all within about a 40-mile radius of one another.

The ability to attend an outdoor music performance on a near-daily basis has become fundamental to life in the Chippewa Valley … and we’re lucky to have that. Many communities have embraced outdoor music culture and offer it in some way, but it’s different here. It’s not only that concerts exist in abundance, but also the quality and aptitude of the artists performing and the way these events are put together. For these we’re not talking big-time festivals, but local venues featuring local musicians organized by local people.

Artists are beyond eager to participate, and more often than not they perform original material.

Coordinators are passionate about offering something beneficial to their communities and showcasing the talent of the people within them. It’s like we have the magic formula for creating outdoor musical awesomeness.

If you look back 10 years ago, this wasn’t the case. Most of the series we have now were developed in the last decade by dedicated individuals who saw the potential and/or recognized the growing demand brought on by the success of other series in the area.

Many of the concert series organizers shared a common idea

that the success of one series seems to inspire the next, which probably contributes to the fact we’ve seen the number of series snowball over the past several years. The success of larger ventures led to more demand for that type of entertainment close to home. Each concert series definitely brings its own panache, but together they create a synergy that shows off the richness of musical styles represented in this area and the talent possessed within each. From blues to indie, jazz to folk, big bands to rock – everything’s in the mix.

Just to touch on a few, Mondays you’ll find ParkBeats at Central Park in Osseo, presented by The Heartbeat Center for Writing, Literacy and the Arts. Tuesdays offers Tuesday Night Blues at the Owen Park bandshell in Eau Claire, which greets crowds of 500-plus nightly and has been put on by the Chippewa Valley Blues society for the past seven years. The Volume One Sounds Like Summer Concert Series on Thursdays in Phoenix Park is now in its 11th season.

The crowd has roughly grown to roughly 2,000 each night, and the series has evolved into a weekly festival. Several series sharing the name Music in the Park take place in Altoona, Durand, Chippewa Falls, and Colfax at various venues.

Music Over Menomin is hosted in Menomonie by the public library and greets crowds of as many as 400 nightly. Wine Down Saturdays at Autumn Harvest Winery, Summer Concert Sunday at Riverbend Winery, and Hoots and Happening at Bullfrog Fish Farm offer music alongside their refreshment selection throughout the week. We could go on …

A contributing factor to all of this, besides the multifaceted music culture, is the setting. The picturesque landscape is here yearround, but only offers amenable outdoor weather on a short-term basis. This exclusivity emphasizes our need and adoration for this kind of entertainment when it is obtainable and contributes to the amount of outdoor music we find readily available here in our home among the woods.

In recent weeks, there’s been some exciting stuff going on over at Evan Middlesworth’s Pine Hollow Studios. Of course, there’s some astounding local tunes being produced over there all the time, but now Middlesworth is throwing ticket-only intimate shows at the studio. This spring, the studio has already hosted the likes of Willy Porter, Carmen Nickerson, and Sundae + Mr. Goessl, but later this summer on July 1, the studio will bring in S. Carey and Kalispell, two local masters of subtle, hushed folk tunes. Shane Leonard, the driving force behind Kalispell, is also set to drop his second album, Printer’s Son, in June, so there will be a whole bevy of new Kalispell tracks to dive into, and what better place to do it than Pine Hollow, where the Valley’s musical dreams are made.
