Apps & Sides some of the more interesting side dishes out there beyond the curds, wings, and rings Does anyone still get excited about French fries? It’s not like the old days when every other restaurant patron would look at his or her waitress with wide eyes and gasp, “You have French fries here?!? That is so exciting! I will take six orders!” No, after many years and many lacerated potatoes, the side dish stranglehold of the French fry is overdone and soggy. So what tasty foodstuff will amble up to the entrée sitting upon your next restaurant plate and completely blow your mind? What innovative appetizers will rise up to conquer your taste buds? Several local restaurants serve some creative contenders.

SHANGHAI BISTRO – TAKOYAKI

FISCHER’S ON THE GREEN – CREAMY GORGONZOLA FONDUE

Shanghai Bistro’s Takoyaki appetizer features a plate of five flash fried, crispy octopus dumplings. The crisp, golden brown shell gives way to the warm, soft, and doughy interior packed with chewy, mildly smoky hunks of octopus each speared on a toothpick for easy eating. The dumplings are served with a thick, tangy Japanese mayonnaise (called kewpie sauce) and the light-as-air crunchy texture of bonito, flakes from a cousin of the mackerel. This tangy octopus treat meets your table for $6. – TG ANDREA PAULSETH

This Altoona mainstay of steak and seafood recently ramped up their “small plate” menu with 15 unique appetizers ranging from bruschetta to escargot. But one of their most popular is the Creamy Gorgonzola Fondue. The gooey sensation is comprised of four different cheeses (but heavy on the gorgonzola – hence the name) poured on a platter with toasted and buttered French bread stacked in a criss-crossed pattern. Dip in and enjoy this formidable starter that’s like a Lincoln Log cabin residing in the state of Bliss, USA – population: you. The gooey awesomeness is yours for $7 (or half off during happy hour). – TK

DUNCAN CREEK WINE BAR & GRILL – TEJAS SHRIMP AND BEEF WONTONS Mexico meets Asia in this intercontinental appetizer that will leave your mouth, if not the world, a little richer. First up is the Tejas Shrimp – two black tiger shrimp seasoned in the Creole and Hispanic traditions, stuffed with a blend of cheeses, and wrapped in rich, woodsmoked bacon. Not to be outdone, the two deep-fried Beef Wontons are stuffed not only with a load of steak filling, but a fair amount of fresh ginger and garlic to boot. To top it off, the plate is served with both a Dijon dipping sauce for the wontons and a citrus chutney for the shrimp. This appetizer has had such success at this Chippewa Falls eatery that the items have likewise appeared on the entrée menu. International cross-promotion has never tasted this good, and for a mere $9. – ML

Whether you call them crayfish, crawfish, or crawdads, these freshwater crustaceans are delicious – and a mainstay of southern cuisine (especially in Louisiana), but around these parts they’re a rarity to be found almost exclusively at the Cajun hotspot Stella Blues. A precursor to their signature creole dishes like gumbo, blackened catfish, or

a perfect choice for something new and daring, but mild. Their culinary artists perfectly pair the flavors of the tiny-bitgamey rabbit, sharp peppers and onions braised in duck fat, and creamy avocado and polenta (made of cornmeal). Hop down and give it a try for $8. – TK

SWEETWATERS RESTAURANT – COCONUT SHRIMP SKEWERS This Sweetwaters treat features three, four-inch shrimp dressed in coconut, slivered almonds, and breadcrumbs dipped in a homemade beer batter and served on skewers. Each skewer takes about three bites to finish, and each sits on a large hunk of grilled pineapple over a bedding of sautéed sweet potato hash, garnished with paprika and fresh parsley. The skewers come served with a dipping cup of piña colada sauce, catapulting the ensemble flavor below the Tropic of Cancer. Ultimately this is a savory, fruity appetizer with a bright tropical taste. All Sweetwaters appetizers are available for $6, or buy two for $11 or three for $15. – TG

jambalaya, these scrumptious sea creatures have the texture of lobster (obviously on a much smaller scale) and are surrounded by a crispy and spicy deep-fried exterior. Give them a dip in the accompanying remoulade sauce (imagine tartar sauce with cayenne pepper) and prepare to be swept away to a land where they’ve never heard of cheese curds. of ingredients thrown together.” Among them are wheatberries, walnuts, cranberries, sunflower seeds, a base made of red wine vinegar, and a few secret seasonings and spices. There’s no greens in this salad, though; think of it as a potato salad that is far more healthy and with a little “bite.” This popular item is definitely something different to spark your taste buds. Try it as a side for $1, or in take-home containers starting at $2.29. – TK

LUCY’S DELICATESSEN – CRAN-WHEATBERRY SALAD

THE LIVERY (AKA COWTOWN SALOON) – BRAISED RABBIT ON A RAFT

The sandwiches at Lucy’s full-service deli are all the rage with patrons, but they’re stealing a bit too much attention from the phenomenal homemade soups and salads you can order on the side of said sandwich. One of the standouts has to be the Cran-wheatberry Salad, which the terribly kind lady behind the counter described to me as “a trail mix salad – a combination

If you’re looking to try something strange and impress your friends, but you’re no Anthony Bourdain, The Livery is the place to go. Their appetizer menu includes rare items like the Cowtown Taco (with grouper), Almond Crusted Duck Tenders (with cranberry orange sauce), Steamed Mussels, and Hand-Breaded Calamari. However the Braised Rabbit on a Raft is

There’s another reason to stop at this authentic Bavarian brewery and beer hall than just the fantastic, fresh brewed beer. To complement the boot or stein filled with your beverage of choice, order another of Das Bierhaus’ genuine, mouthwatering treats – their Schnitzel Strips. Whether alone, with their dipping sauce, or on a sandwich, these hand-breaded and seasoned pork strips are prepared fresh daily. And you can taste it. Biting into this world-class delight reminds you of your favorite homemade cooking mixed in with European old-world charm. You just can’t miss it. The crispy strips of heaven run for $9. – AD

THE FIRST DATE

it’s not like it’s your anniversary.

Whether your mom set up a blind date or you worked up the courage to ask out a cute acquaintance, you’re looking for something quick, pretty cheap, and a little noisy (to avoid awkward silences).

V1’s crew of cupids recommend: Shanghai Bistro (2930 Craig Road), Stella Blues (306 E Madison St.), and Sweetwaters (1104 W Clairemont Ave.)

Volume One’s affection officials recommend: Mogie’s Pub (436 Water St.) and Acoustic Café (505 S Barstow St., EC or 102 Main St., Menomonie)

SEVERAL DATES IN Now you’re looking to get to know this person, so you want something quiet, a little bit longer time frame, and with a diverse menu so you can gauge their tastes/pickiness. Volume One’s Don Juans and John Cusacks recommend: Water Street Deli (628 Water St.), Pad Thai (203 N Barstow St.), and Cicione’s (120 N Clairemont Ave.)

VALENTINE’S DAY You’re looking for something loveydovey, that takes reservations, and is a little romantic – but nothing over the top,

GROUP DATE You’re looking for big table seating, a casual atmosphere, and an eccentric menu so people can try each other’s dishes. V1’s couple connectors recommend: Das Bierhaus (120 6th Ave., Menomonie), The Livery (316 Wisconsin St.), and Zanzibar (228 Main St., Menomonie)

ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY You’re looking for something special for the scrapbook, but nothing that’ll bust your fledgling budget. V1’s licensed love doctors recommend: Haymarket Grill (101 Graham Ave.), Duncan Creek (213 Bridge St., Chippewa Falls), and Draganetti’s (3120 Hillcrest Pkwy., Altoona)

THE PROPOSAL

Volume One’s Eat Scene 2010

12

This is a serious memory-maker, whether to set the mood for the proposal later on or to actually do it right there. (Just don’t do the ring-in-champagne bit, please.) V1’s hopeless romantics recommend: Mona Lisa’s (428 Water St.) and Houligan’s Steak and Seafood Pub (415 S Barstow St.)

GETTING-THE-MAGIC-BACK DATE NIGHT You’re a few years into cohabitation/marriage and need someplace quiet to get away from the kids and have time for just the two of you. V1’s kinship virtuosos recommend: Fanny Hill Dinner Theatre (3919 Crescent Ave.) and Fischer’s on the Green (2333 Hillcrest Pkwy, Altoona)

10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY You’re looking for that once-in-a-longwhile situation, where you’re willing to drop some significant dough and stare longingly into your aging loved one’s eyes. V1’s vivaciousness veterans recommend: The Creamery (E4620 Cty Road C, Menomonie) and High Shores Supper Club (17985 Cty Hwy X, Chippewa Falls)

Beyond the Apron in super-secret-anonymous fashion, Volume One reveals on-the-job stories from local servers ANDREA PAULSETH

Catastrophes are plentiful as crumbs at restaurants, and local restaurants are no exception. We sat down in highly guarded areas (taking every precaution to conceal their identities) and questioned every server between Lake Wissota’s northernmost pier and Rock Falls’s southernmost anthill. It seems our methodology paid off: we gained access to the strangest, juiciest, and most comical on-the-job happenings: the stories that, until now, they’ve tucked away with their aprons at night. We cover it all: the “whoopses” that wrecked hopes of a brimming tip jar, the customers who were not always right, the disasters-turnedperformances that earned them applause, and more. If you’ve never recited the daily specials, you’ll be enlightened. If you have, John Q. Public, a V1 tipster

A CRUSHING REALIZATION

I worked at a “drive-in” restaurant during my high school days and had the biggest crush on one of the customers. He always ordered the same burrito meal with very specific substitutions for take-out. I saw this meal waiting for pick-up one day, and decided to put a note in there with my phone number on it, along with some stupid message about thinking he was cute. A little while later, I saw someone paying for that order and it was an elderly woman. Whoops.

STOPPING THEM ON A DIME

My grandparents used to come and visit me while I waitressed. One day they were sitting right next to a few of my other customers. The people fin-

well, then you can relate … maybe.

ished, and got up to pay their bill, leaving only a dime as a tip. My grandpa saw that and said, “Hey! Don’t be so cheap! That’s my granddaughter who was waiting on you!” I wanted to die.

NAME GAME

I once had a customer who refused to call me by my name. Instead, he insisted on calling me “Little Korean Girl.” I corrected him more than a few times, but to no avail. I finally told him if he refused to address me by my name, I refused to serve him. (It was my boss’s idea.) He finally obliged and I got a 30 percent tip.

PESKY GYMNASTS

One of the worst things, as a server, is to have late diners. The ones who

Volume One’s Eat Scene 2010

14

slip in two minutes before the kitchen closes. One unlucky night, I had two buses full of girls coming home from a gymnastics conference pull up and we had to serve them. It was 26 girls under 10 and three coaches. They wanted separate checks and I only got tips from the coaches.

SEE A PENNY, PICK IT UP

Sometimes when you’re a server you’ll have to take fiscal punishment through no fault of your own. For instance when the kitchen screws up an order. It’s never a good situation, and you basically just have to admit the failure and try to make up for it. It’s considered an art form in some areas. One such evening the customer was outraged, I was uber-apologetic and

BEYOND THE APRON

Jane Doe, another V1 tipster knocked the price down on their meal, and figured it would be fine. He paid for the less-than-$20 check with a $100 bill, asked for change suitable for a tip, and left a penny.

EARN-A-BLUSH

As a banquet waitress, I usually worked weddings, which was always a lot of fun. However, one fateful day I was waitressing for a hunter’s convention. From stuffed dead animals on all the walls to having $20 bills stuffed into my skirt, I was a bit uncomfortable to say the least. Uncomfortable shifted to disastrous when a gun was shot off to begin the meal, causing me to drop 20 pricey dinners and shatter 20 glass plates. As shards of glass and giblets of meat and gravy flew, so did I. I landed on the lap of one very furry old hunter who was in the process of standing up. I earned a hearty round of applause, another $20 bill, and a brilliant blush as reward.

MISPLACED LUNCH

It seems like something is always coming up at work, sometimes quite literally. Even at the end of the night when all you have left to do is sweep up before you can go home, kick off your slip-resistant shoes and relax, there are still issues that arise. There was one such incident, where I was sweeping after my last table and I saw the

corner of a napkin sticking out from under the table. I bent down, stuck my broom under the table, and swept out the napkin. However, along the way, I discovered that the napkin was filled with vomit. As I swept it out, I spread the vomit across the floor, adding about 30 minutes of clean-up to my night. The part that kills me is that the barfer was literally two feet away from a garbage can, and yet somehow decided the best place for a barf-filled napkin was under the table.

FINDERS WEEEPERS

Other things that are unacceptable to leave under a table when you leave a restaurant: underwire from a bra, baby shoes/hats/mittens, chewed gum, all of the items from your purse that you no longer want (almost-gone chapstick, ripped up receipts, etc), dirty tissues, dirty diapers, dirty pictures, and insulin pens.

THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG

I’ve received all of these things as tips, and they’re unacceptable: just pennies, candy, coupons, phone numbers, selfhelp pamphlets, Mary Kay consultant cards, mini-bibles, and what appears to be a $5 bill but is really a pocket sized copy of the Ten Commandments. We make $2.33 an hour and really just need you to leave us a cash tip.

Fan-freaking-tastic! Seriously. Yes, on the expensive side, but worth every penny. We went all out, and each course was perfect. Wisconsin Baked Brie in a dark cherry sauce. High quality seafood, perfect steak, and Leinie’s battered deep fried bananas. Excellent wine selection. Shout out to the wait staff. BEST service I’ve had.

I finally visited this place and thought it delicious. The noodle wraps, despite being fried, are delicious and the sweet dipping sauce is unique and wonderful. I’m a huge fan of pho and found theirs to be a unique take of the ubiquitous Vietnamese dish. Quite good overall ... and $20 for two people to be stuffed is a bargain in my book.

When we have out of town guests, we always take them to Albertville. They all are amazed at the quality of food, the quantity, and the friendly staff at this little holein-the-wall that locals just love! It is very impressive that they close for a week every year to clean and paint the entire inside. How many other places do do that?!

Now this is REAL bbq. The chains have nothing on this place. You HAVE to get the beans and at least 8 pieces of toast. Service is great, food is crazy good and CHEAP for the huge plate you get. I have never had a bad meal and I eat here A LOT. The fish fry is awesome and you can call ahead and pick up which is great.

I would literally eat at Nucleus 3-5 times per week. Their omelletes, sandwiches, crepes, pancakes, French toast, bacon, and coffee are all phenomenal. The seating in the front is cold in winter, but the spacious area behind Racy’s more than makes up for it. This is definitely the one restaurant in EC that I would hate to live without.

The service is always friendly and helpful. The restaurant clean and warm. Almost like sitting in your grandparent’s house. When you get there early enough, your meal comes with a complementary cup of fantastic warm pudding. The food is always hot and fresh, and reasonably priced, though commercial frozen food for the most part.

Houligans is one of the Valley’s best restaurants. In the top two for seafood, top three for steaks, and the top five overall. And that’s not just my opinion, it’s a fact. Google it. What’s great is that even though the food is high-end, ritzy stuff, the place still keeps it casual and cool. Awesome soups and beers, too.
