LETTER FROM THE TRUSTEES CARTA DE LOS FUNDADORES By David S. Vogel & Thais Lopez Vogel
This year brought with it the dawn of a new era, where climate change is being placed at the forefront of rebuilding the world after COVID. In the same way the power of determination was seen as the global community came together in response to the unforeseen pandemic, international cooperation of governments, scientists and private sector must take place to address the climate crisis facing humanity. The effects of human-caused climate change can be seen around the world with raging wildfires, water and air pollution, devastating droughts, catastrophic hurricanes and deadly flooding occurring at record breaking rates. As concerned global citizens, we must call upon governments to enact the solutions available today to reduce emissions and mitigate the impending impacts of climate change.

Este año trajo consigo los albores de una nueva era, donde el cambio climático se está colocando a la vanguardia de la reconstrucción del mundo después del COVID. De la misma manera que se vio el poder de determinación cuando la comunidad mundial se unió en respuesta a la pandemia imprevista, la cooperación internacional de los gobiernos, los científicos y el sector privado debe tener lugar para abordar la crisis climática que enfrenta la humanidad. Alongside our partner programs highlighted in this report, VoLo Foundation continues to focus on the importance of education, science-based climate solutions, and health initiatives to introduce positive change for the environment and the global population. In January we launched the Climate Correction Podcast in which every other week the audience is connected with experts from leading environmental organizations. Listeners learn about the ways climate change is shaping our everyday lives, the vast array of available solutions, and how each of us plays an important role in reducing our individual carbon footprint. VoLo’s first fully virtual Florida Climate Week and Climate Correction Conference took place April 19-23 with over 133 speakers and more than 1,200 attendees. The week focused on exploring the impact of positive climate solutions as we proudly brought together the world’s leaders in climate action to share the ways in which climate change is affecting our communities and how we each can get involved in creating a more sustainable future.

On April 10th we celebrated our efforts for environmental protection to honor earth, we held our “Plog Run” event which consisted of running around Wynwood, Miami, exercising and picking up trash along the way. By doing that we aim to inspire and empower others to do the same. Our Co-Founder, Thais Lopez Vogel, participated as a speaker at the 2021 Synapse Orlando, which took place on Friday, October 15, 2021 at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando, Florida. During the “Morning Keynote: Experience Orlando” panel, Thais shared insights on the VoLo VISTA Award, which recognizes graduate students working on projects to achieve bold improvement in Florida’s climate goals and presented a $10,000 check to the 2021 Vista Award winning project. (Page 42)

OZONE-DEPLETING CHEMICALS MAY SPEND LESS TIME IN THE ATMOSPHERE THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT "We find total emissions coming from new production is on the order of 20 gigagrams a year for each of these molecules,” says lead author Megan Lickley, “This is higher than what previous scientists suggested for CFC-11, and also identifies likely new emissions of CFC-12 and 113, which previously had been overlooked. Because CFCs are such potent greenhouse gases and destroy the ozone layer, this work has important implications for the health of our planet”.
The study’s co-authors include Sarah Fletcher at Stanford University, Matt Rigby at the University of Bristol, and Susan Solomon, along with the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professorship in Environmental Studies at the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.
