2023 was a year for VoLo Foundation to discover much more about the complex challenges posed by the climate crisis, but it was also a time to identify countless unimaginedsolutions.

Over the last 365 days, we have worked to broadcast knowledge about those most affected by this problem to new audiences, addressing consequences including the human impact on health, women, children, andmigrants.

At the same time, we are empowering activism, humanitarian support, educational programs, volunteer work, and even venturingintounexpectedfieldssuchasthe fashion and the film industries, finding new platforms to make our actions more effectiveandpowerful.

2023 fue para la Fundación VoLo un año para descubrir mucho más sobre los complejos retos que nos presenta la crisis climática, pero también fue el momento de encontrar numerosas soluciones no imaginadas.

En estos 365 días hemos trabajado en difundir a nuevas audiencias conocimiento sobre aquellos más afectados por el problema a nuevas audiencias, abordando consecuencias que incluyen el impacto humano en la salud, la mujer, los niños y los migrantes.

The Foundation's initiatives, such as the annual Climate Correction conference and Florida Climate Week,servetomeetnewindividualsandorganizations working toward the same goal. This year we incorporated aspects of the climate crisis that we had not previously addressed, and we were able to learn about the many contributions that science and creativityhavetooffer.

Our presence in the media grew exponentially this year, confirming that public interest is increasing, and more and more people want to be informed and get involvedinclimateaction.

Wearehere,atVoLoFoundation,tospreadknowledge and to call on all individuals, organizations, companies, and elected officials to build common ground and work as a team on the greatest challenge facing humanitytoday.

Coordination Between Science and Policy Is Key to Climate Action

The fifth annual Climate Correction™ Conference was held on Friday, March 8, 2023, in Orlando, FL. This year, VoLo Foundation’s flagship event invited representatives from internationally recognized institutions such as the Organization of American States and the World Bank.

It was also attended by a range of experts, activists, business leaders, and policymakers. The aim was to prove that climate change affects us all on multiple levels: health, economy, migration, and many more.

The event convened 225 attendees who listened to the 32 speakers address topics including the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a landmark piece of legislation for its scope on clean energy, which aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Economic data demonstrating the urgency of greater political will to address the climate problem was also presented. The need to create international instruments to help migrants impacted by extreme weather events was emphasized.

In addition, a number of panels addressed the effectiveness of solar energy in providing electricity to communities affected by hurricanes, while demonstrating that this energy alternative is becoming increasingly affordable.

Art was featured thanks to TIMEPieces artist Allison Dayka, who painted a mural in downtown Orlando as a reminder of the commitment that citizens must make to care for the planet.

As the world faces the growing threat of climate change, innovative solutions are emerging. One gaining momentum on the global stage is the carbon dividend VoLo Foundation has consistently backed this concept. We believe that this mechanism is proving to be an effective and equitable way to address climate change, by putting a price on carbon emissions and returning the revenue to citizens.

The Government of Canada asserts on its website, “There’s a clear cost from a changing climate, so it can’t be free to pollute.” Through carbon pricing, governments aim to incentivize a reduction in emissions and encourage a transition to cleaner alternatives.

Jennifer Sara, Global Director for Climate Change at the World Bank, has stated, “Carbon pricing can be an effective way to incorporate the costs of climate change into economic decision making, thereby incentivizing climate action.”

This organization reports that revenues from carbon taxes and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) have reached a record high, about $95 billion. When the first report was released, ten years ago, only 7% of global emissions were covered by either a carbon tax or an ETS. Currently, 23% of those emissions are covered by 73 instruments.

A carbon dividend is currently a forward-moving climate action across the world. What about the United States? The climate-related components of the Inflation Reduction Act could potentially set the stage for the implementation of carbon pricing in the foreseeable future, leveraging the current momentum.

This seems to be a reasonable inference based on the perspective that the most effective approach to garnering public support for this decision involves what experts call “strategic policy sequencing.”

As the main objective is to achieve federal legislation, we must engage in efforts within local communities to garner support for this crucial policy among our federal representatives.

Over the past year, our Health Team has experienced significant growth in various areas including personnel, scientific projects, external outreach, and philanthropic giving. One noteworthy expansion has been in our data science department, where we've welcomed new team members, bolstering our analytical capabilities, and diversifying our expertise. This influx of talent has empowered us to expedite collaborative endeavors with the academic research groups we support. Furthermore, it has enabled us to embark on fresh independent research ventures in the realm of personalized medicine.

In alignment with our commitment to education, we extended opportunities to seven students from Florida Atlantic University's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. These students participated in a 10-week summer internship, during which they delved into extensive research on the role of diagnostic blood tests in monitoring overall health and wellness across a person's lifetime. Their contributions, including numerous presentations and reports, have significantly enriched our internal research initiatives. We eagerly anticipate providing further career advancement opportunities next year.

Throughout the past year, we've actively increased our presence at scientific and medical conferences, fostering new connections, and acquiring knowledge in the fields of longevity and personalized medicine. Notably, we were delighted to attend the annual conference organized by The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), affording us the chance to interact with leaders in this evolving healthcare sector. Subsequently, we forged a valuable partnership with IFM and the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA).

The key for improved health and longevity is a better understanding of the data in our bodies. An abundance of fantastic research is now taking place due to improved technology and the decreasing cost of obtaining actionable data on ourselves. Our role as a data-oriented foundation is to accelerate this knowledge, through funding and collaboration with research groups that are engaged at key inflection points of data-driven solutions to our most critical, unresolved health challenges.

This collaboration aims to support scholarships for health coaches and physicians seeking education in functional medicine. Through this initiative, we aspire to enhance accessibility and promote the adoption of functional medicine—an approach centered on preventive, patient-focused healthcare geared toward longterm wellness.

Additionally, we expanded our support for Dr. Ali Torkamani at Scripps Research, broadening the scope of the Prospective Electronic Polygenetic Risk Study (PEPRS) concerning experimental molecular measures. Our contributions to Scripps Research garnered recognition on the cover of the February 2023 issue of the Palm Beach Society Magazine. This feature delves into our involvement in the program and our collective dedication to mitigating the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Wrapping up a fruitful year, we established a new partnership with The Methuselah Foundation, jointly backing The Biomarkers of Aging Consortium—an initiative uniting scholars and practitioners in the development, validation, and implementation of biomarkers for aging and longevity. We've provided support for ongoing consortium activities, including the 2023 Biomarkers of Aging Symposium, a full-day, in-person event scheduled for December 4th, 2023, at The Buck Institute in Novato, California. In 2023, Florida Climate Week (FCW) marked a significant year of growth and development. Between October 2nd and 8th, VoLo Foundation hosted a week-long series of free events with a focus on addressing climate challenges and solutions within Florida, consolidating FCW’s position as a referential climate landmark.

We reached this goal by offering a diverse range of complimentary online and in-person events, such as keynote presentations, panel conversations, and engaging workshops, all of them aimed at tackling the issues associated with climate change in the state of Florida. Our roster of speakers and panelists featured a diverse group of individuals, encompassing scientists, policymakers, business executives, and community champions. Each contributor brought their distinct viewpoints and personal experiences to enrich the dialogue.

Collectively, their target was to bring increased awareness, facilitate knowledge sharing, and catalyze efforts toward forging a more sustainable future for the state of Florida.

The 2023 Florida Climate Week event convened over 800 people, and consisted of 35 virtual panels, in addition to 10 onsite activities. There were also Spanish sessions added to the program.

Among the topics covered, we can mention: ‘Sustainability Education for All’, ‘Community Partnerships for Coral Research’, ‘Using the Power of Food to Tackle Climate Change’, ‘Songs and Sustainability’, ‘Engaging Elders in Climate Action’, ‘Climate Change Communication for Public Audiences’, ‘Overcoming Eco-Anxiety’, ‘Championing Emotional Resilience Among Youth’, and ‘Empowering Citizen Advocacy for Climate Change.’

FCW's prestige is growing each year, as evidenced by the 28 proclamations issued by several Florida cities. They declared the week of October 2-8 as Florida Climate Week in an effort to inform their citizens about the problem and its solutions.

Some of the cities that issued proclamations in support of our event were Miami, Miami Beach, Orlando, Kissimmee, Tampa, Hollywood, Doral, St. Pete, Lake Worth, and Orange County. An additional value for this year was the call to action by signing the ‘People’s Proclamation’, which was sent to lawmakers and elected officials to invite them to declare Florida Climate Week™ as an official event in their town or region. This request garnered 135 signatures.

The sessions can be viewed for a limited time on www.floridaclimateweek.org and will also be available on VoLo Foundation's YouTube channel for ongoing access.

THIS SPACE TECHNOLOGY CAN CUT CLIMATE POLLUTION ON EARTH

The latest science warns that the window for preventing the most catastrophic global warming is closing fast. But we have a crucial opportunity to slow the rate of warming right now, even as we continue the transition to clean energy as quickly as possible.

Deep reductions in carbon dioxide emissions remain critical over the long term. However, it turns out that methane emissions from fossil fuel operations, livestock production, and other industries are responsible for more than 30% of the current temperature rise. Cutting these emissions is the fastest way to put the brakes on climate change. But tracking these invisible emissions can be challenging.

That’s the reason for MethaneSAT, a compact new satellite being built by a specially created new arm of our partner program Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The oil and gas industry is a leading source of methane emissions. From remote wellheads to gas utility lines, companies release at least 75 million metric tons a year — enough gas to produce electricity for all of Africa twice over. Extensive research led by EDF suggests that oil and gas methane emissions in the U.S. are 60% higher than official EPA estimates.

Advancing Climate Solutions as Smart Economic Policy in Florida

With VoLo Foundation’s (VoLo), Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is working to create a safer and more resilient Florida for everyone. Across the state, we’re striving to spur the transition to a clean and reliable energy economy and protect communities from the impacts of climate change and pollution.

Florida is in the top three states for greenhouse gas pollution. VoLo is helping EDF drive clean energy progress in the Sunshine State by electrifying transportation fleets and reducing dependence on fossil fuels for electricity production. Renewable energy is cleaner and more affordable, yet Florida is reliant on imported natural gas for 75% of its power supply. Because the price of natural gas is volatile, Florida families have faced upwards of a 20% increase in their home electricity bills over the last 12 months. With VoLo’s support, EDF has reached over 2 million Floridians to build pressure for a statewide energy plan that leverages Florida’s abundant sunshine as an opportunity to lead on solar power, lowering bills for residents while creating new green jobs and reducing air and climate pollution. We’re also continuing to pressure Florida’s Department of Transportation to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which will reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

In addition to the well-documented threat rising and warming ocean waters pose to Florida’s coastline, EDF is also recording climate risks for Florida’s farmers. This year, we focused on Florida’s strawberry growers — who contribute $400 million annually to the state economy. By working together, looking ahead, and relying on data and science modeling, EDF found that climate change could significantly reduce crop yields as rising temperatures make it too hot for strawberries to grow. With this new study, Florida farmers now have clear opportunities to mitigate the impact. We identified several adaptation strategies to offset climate change impacts, including investment in new shading technology and utilizing heat-tolerant strawberry hybrid varieties.

Elsewhere on the Gulf Coast, EDF’s VoLo Senior Environmental Data Scientist, Lauren Padilla, in partnership with Texas A&M University and Galveston Bay Foundation, is using best-in-class science to identify which petrochemical facilities pose the greatest risk for releasing chemicals during floods and extreme weather and which communities and ecosystems are most vulnerable to those potential exposures. This information is critical in identifying solutions that will prevent toxic chemical releases that threaten public health, damage marine ecosystems, and put fishing industry jobs at risk.

VoLo Foundation (VoLo) believes in education and gender equity as antidotes to climate change. As an investor in Project Alianza’s model since 2015, VoLo has committed to co-sponsoring the development of local women as community educators as the nonprofit continues to scale its impact.

VoLo’s financial support has helped upskill 18 women for professional teaching careers as Educadoras, local women with high leadership potential who would otherwise be limited to informal sector employment work within their own local villages.

To honor the longstanding support of VoLo, Project Alianza is naming the Community Educator Initiative, VoLando, which aptly translates to soaring in English. Educadoras have collectively provided reading, health, and mentorship programs to over 10,000 children in remote villages who face daunting odds just to get a basic education. They attend single-room schools with mud floors, often mixed in with students from other grades.
