OUR HISTORY Our Founders, David S. Vogel and Thais Lopez Vogel, have maintained a personal philanthropic portfolio for many years, largely comprised of public health and education programs. As they became more informed and noticed evident changes in the environment and climate, they set out to answer the hard questions by funding projects aimed at solving these major issues.

In 2014, David and Thais formed VoLo Foundation.

David, an MIT graduate, and Thais, a Venezuelan-born attorney, are the visionaries and heartbeat of VoLo. Together, they built our team, bringing in some of the brightest minds and declaring their intent to put these top scientific experts to work.

In 2019, David and his team of specialists took action to leverage the Foundation’s data science expertise to serve new purposes in the domain of healthcare.

Through the health research program, the team has extended their focus to longevity and wellness data in seeking new paths to reduce hallmarks of aging, prevent diseases, and improve wellness metrics.

SMALL ACTION, BIG IMPACT From an early age, I instinctively understood the importance of taking action. A pivotal childhood experience in Venezuela solidified this understanding and shaped my future.

During my youth, a popular telethon called "Teleradio Pabellón" aired annually, featuring celebrities raising funds for Hogar Clínica San Rafael, a children's orthopedic clinic. The event captivated the nation with its slogan: "The smile of a healthy child will be your reward."

Watching the show, I was inspired by the unity and energy of the celebrities working toward a common goal. I realized that even I, as a child, could contribute to helping other

Although I didn't get to speak with a celebrity, I felt part of something greater—an action that was changing the world for the better. This experience opened a door in my life that has never closed, instilling in me a lifelong commitment to taking action and making a positive impact.

2014 Why VoLo? History of Our Name In 2014, our founders, David S. Vogel and Thais Lopez Vogel, combined their last names to create "VoLo" (Vogel + Lopez). They established the foundation to promote science-based solutions to climate change, education, and health.

Make-A-Wish® Central and Northern Florida The Make-A-Wish vision is to grant life-changing wishes to every child battling a critical illness. These wishes give courage, hope, and strength to children throughout their treatments. VoLo Foundation first partnered with the Central and Northern Florida chapter in 2015 for their Season of Wishes campaign and, over the last 10 years, has been able to grant numerous wishes.

Waimanalo Canoe Club The Waimanalo Canoe Club is dedicated to educating students in Hawaii's rich culture and history. Through practicing the tradition of Hawaiian voyaging, they nurture and empower their members physically, intellectually, and socially. Along with their paddling programs, they inspire their community to care for the environment by coming together and hosting clean-ups. In 2015, VoLo Foundation sponsored the Keiki Division of the Waimanalo Canoe Club, making it possible for the 13 paddlers (12-year-old boys and 13-year-old girls) to place 2nd overall at the 2015 HCRA State Championship!

2016 Impact Report This year, we took a significant step forward by launching our first Impact Report, proudly supporting 14 grantees that year. Even before starting VoLo Foundation, David and Thais were dedicated to organizations making a significant impact in Central Florida and beyond. These early efforts continue to inspire and guide us as we celebrate ten years of progress and commitment to our mission.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) NRDC is the first national environmental advocacy group to focus on legal action. With more than 700 lawyers, scientists, and other professionals, NRDC works to safeguard the Earth.

VoLo Foundation joins them in their belief that fighting climate change is the best way to build a better future. VoLo's grants have enabled NRDC to make significant advances in passing important environmental protection laws. In 2016, the NRDC successfully led a campaign that pushed President Obama to issue a permanent ban on drilling in 98 percent of U.S. Arctic waters and large areas of the Atlantic. That year, they also worked tirelessly to help Flint, Michigan, achieve safe drinking water with the replacement of lead pipes.

Camp Boggy Creek Camp Boggy Creek makes it possible for children with serious illnesses to enjoy a life-changing camp experience. The 232acre camp serves children diagnosed with chronic or lifethreatening diseases, providing them with the chance to spend time with others who are just like them and to cultivate lifelong friendships. VoLo Foundation has supported Camp Boggy Creek's mission to give these children moments of adventure, laughter, and happiness.

World Wildlife Fund, Inc. (WWF) In 2016, WWF began working on the Heritage Colombia initiative to protect 19.5 million acres of natural forest in Colombia. VoLo Foundation's grant supported the collection and analysis of data used to build a case for this forest conservation as an approach to climate change mitigation. The support for this endeavor has now grown into a 245-million-dollar project that protects 79 million acres and has avoided 46.3 tons of emissions in the forest of Colombia. It has been under implementation since July 2023 and is set to be completed in July 2033. VoLo is honored to have provided the seed money to WWF to help initiate this project.

2017

2017 Annual Impact Report In 2017, our commitment deepened as we supported twenty-eight different charities, integrating our mission and guiding principles into every effort. We backed ten research projects, eight academic expansions, eight relief initiatives, and fifteen environmental and conservation efforts. By immersing ourselves in the daily activities of these programs, we learned and grew alongside them, staying responsive to their needs while remaining steadfast in our mission. This hands-on approach strengthened our resolve and furthered our impact.

VERGE Hawaii Energy Conference This year, the VoLo team attended the VERGE Hawaii Energy Conference, a hub for innovators focused on advancing renewable energy. By learning from leaders at the forefront of this movement, we bolstered our dedication to supporting a sustainable energy future.

Punahou School Punahou School is a co-educational college preparatory day school, the largest independent school in the U.S. on a 76-acre campus, which incorporates innovative teaching with a tradition of academic, athletic, and artistic excellence.

Punahou's goal is to combine high-quality education with a deep commitment to social responsibility, including incorporating sustainable practices into its institutional policies and actions. In 2017, VoLo Foundation helped fund the Sidney and Minnie Kosasa Grades 2-5 Community, a new vision of the learning environment that optimizes the Punahou experience. VoLo's support was focused on Punahou's commitment to achieving a net-zero energy footprint. The Community has LEED-certified buildings and a focus on sustainable architecture, highlighting the importance of outdoor learning environments.

Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida Funding from VoLo Foundation helps Central Florida’s Coalition for the Homeless branch sustain its operations of providing emergency services to those in need. This organization combats poverty and homelessness by ensuring safe shelter, nutritious meals, clean clothes, and access to showers for a variety of people in their community. Their goal is always to return individuals and families to safe, stable, permanent housing through a collaborative community effort to end homelessness.

St. Jude Children's ® Research Hospital St. Jude Children's Research Hospital leads the way in understanding, treating, and defeating childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Their mission is to advance cures and prevention methods for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. No family is ever billed for treatment, travel, housing, or food. In 2017, VoLo Foundation's grant helped pave the way for St. Jude to become home to the first proton beam therapy center dedicated solely for children. At their proton beam therapy center, they combine personalized care and the most advanced forms of radiation therapy available to patients.

Climate CorrectionTM is Born: A New Era in Climate Action In 2018, we launched the Climate Correction Conference at UCF. Our trustees and our advisory board pivoted to create a climate education event featuring top scientists and faculty. Named after the financial term "correction," the conference focused on mitigating and adapting to climate change. The first event was a success, attracting the City of Orlando as an official partner. After the initial years with UCF, VoLo took ownership, committed to growing the conference into a longterm platform for climate action.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) The Nature Conservancy has been dedicated to protecting and caring for the environment since 1951. It is continuously working to find solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises our planet faces. As part of its efforts to combat climate change, TNC's LEAF (Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future) Program aims to empower the next generation of conservation advocates.

VoLo Foundation's grant to support this environmental education program facilitated their ability to send several students to explore conservation work all over the country as paid interns.

Lelt Foundation Lelt Foundation works with impoverished families in Ethiopia by providing nutritional assistance, educational programs, and employment opportunities. VoLo Foundation’s support to Lelt in 2018 provided funding to build one of the only renewable-energy technology labs in Eastern Africa, the VoLo Computer Lab. This facility teaches disadvantaged students advanced IT programming skills and uses alternative energy sources, allowing students to continue their work, even when the power grid falters. Additionally, the progress of the technology provided to students has led to the launch of a new program, Girls Who Code, an intensive learning course for ten of the most advanced technology students.

Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) With over 50 years of work and more than three million members, Environmental Defense Fund has delivered solutions that have a real impact in fighting climate change. In 2018, VoLo Foundation started funding the first VoLo Environmental Data Scientist, Lauren Padilla, Ph.D. Lauren works with EDF to reduce air pollution while improving human and ecosystem health. Her research uses large-scale environmental monitoring, remote sensing, human activity, and emission source data sets to understand patterns of pollution and its root causes.

2018 Annual Impact Report In 2018, VoLo became a leading voice on climate change, recognized by figures like Michael Bloomberg and featured in major media outlets for our datadriven approach to climate solutions and philanthropic initiatives. The year’s highlight was the First Annual Climate Correction conference, which we hosted in partnership with UCF. We also supported 30 programs and funded 33 projects across five continents, expanding our global impact and paving the way for deeper collaborations in the years to come.

VCN: The Launch of VoLo Climate News In 2019, what began as a simple internal email summarizing the week’s top environmental news for about eight board and team members, evolved into VoLo Climate News (VCN). Recognizing its potential, we transformed this "weekly news" into a biweekly newsletter designed for a broader audience interested in climate developments. Now, with up to 5,500 subscribers and growing, VCN delivers timely updates on climate research, solutions, the economy, and health impacts, keeping readers informed on how climate change affects them. As an editorially independent program, VCN presents unbiased information, helping our audience stay connected to the latest climate-related events, innovations, and VoLo’s program partners.

In-Depth Research: VCN has consistently delivered well-researched articles that explore the multifaceted aspects of climate change. These include analyses of the latest scientific findings, policy discussions, and profiles of innovative climate solutions.

VoLo Program Partners: Through features on VoLo program partners, VCN has highlighted the critical work being done by organizations, researchers, and activists in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation. These spotlights serve to inspire and connect like-minded individuals and entities.

2019 Annual Impact Report In 2019, we focused on making a local impact in Florida, launching VoLo Climate News (VCN) and hosting our 2nd annual Climate Correction conference in Orlando. We made our research accessible, forged new local partnerships, and were featured in major Florida publications. Our data scientists predicted significant warming trends, highlighting the urgent need for action.

2019 Climate Correction Conference In 2019, our one-day Climate Correction conference and expo on October 3 rd united diverse voices from all walks of life, including top industry experts, researchers, government officials, students, and the public. The event emphasized the urgent need for collaboration on effective climate solutions. Highlights included Dr. Marshall Shepherd discussing the rise in tropical systems in higher latitudes, Chris Castro, Orlando's Director of Sustainability, unveiling the city's ambitious net-zero plans for 2050, and keynote speaker Vanessa Hauc sharing powerful stories of communities most impacted by climate change.

VoLo VISTA Award Launched In 2019, we introduced the VoLo VISTA Award to celebrate student-led initiatives that bring innovative climate solutions to Florida and beyond. Initially intended for one winner, both public and scientific votes led to two projects receiving $10,000 each: Marbelys Garriga’s "Hybridizing Florida's Coastline" from Florida International University and Sarah Swiersz and Mohsina Mahmood’s "Food Waste Recovery System" from the University of Central Florida. As our latest recognition for exemplary student leadership in Vision, Innovation, Sustainability, Technology, and Action, the VISTA Award continues in 2024, with VoLo’s co-founders selecting the project that best advances climate solutions in Florida.

IDEAS For Us This Orlando-based grassroots nonprofit is advancing global environmental solutions through local action. In 2019, VoLo's grant supported their Fleet Farming Program which transforms the average American lawn into biodiverse, productive micro-farms and edible gardens. With its headquarters located in Parramore, a federally recognized food desert and "Promise Zone," IDEAS For Us is working to educate the next generation on sustainable urban farming to combat climate change. Additionally, since 2018, Fleet Farming has worked with K-12 schools to launch programs that will benefit the community around food, farming, entrepreneurship, and healthy eating.

Mi Familia Vota / Mi Familia en Acción Mi Familia en Acción is an outreach organization working to shift behavior and increase voter registration, specifically within Latino, immigrant, and allied communities. They strive for a future where these communities have a voice and can advance policies promoting their health, safety, and prosperity. They communicate with voters in their primary language and provide year-round critical information and assistance with immigration and citizenship programs.

Amplio VoLo Foundation supports Amplio's Talking Book audio device which enables governments and development organizations to provide access to information in hard-to-reach communities.

They are on a mission to reach the world's most vulnerable communities through this inclusive digital technology. There are nearly 800 million people who cannot read or write. With the Talking Book, people can play messages in their local language on-demand and record feedback. In September 2019, the UN Secretary-General called on all sectors of society to mobilize for a decade of action for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”). Through partnerships with UNESCO, the World Bank, UNICEF, and others, Amplio aims to reach 10 million people in the next 10 years to help achieve the UN SDGs.

2020 2020 Annual Report In 2020, despite working from home due to the pandemic, our team expanded and continued to make a significant impact. We supported 49 programs, including many focused on COVID-19 response. The pandemic underscored the urgent need for climate action, revealing it as a “dress rehearsal” for future challenges. Recognizing the growing evidence of climate change and its effects, we remained steadfast in our commitment, supporting our nonprofit partners and addressing altered needs. We took decisive steps to promote climate solutions and monitor the impact of air pollution on global public health, reinforcing our dedication to both immediate and long-term environmental and health initiatives.

2020: A Year of Virtual Impact and Unwavering Commitment We actively participated in numerous virtual events, adapting to the challenges of the global pandemic. These platforms allowed us to continue our mission, engaging with global leaders, experts, and communities on critical issues related to climate change and public health. Despite the distance, we remained connected and committed, using these sessions to drive meaningful conversations, share insights, and foster collaboration. Our participation in these virtual forums demonstrated our resilience and dedication to advancing climate solutions during a time of unprecedented global disruption.

Launch of VoLo Health Initiative In 2020, VoLo Foundation launched the VoLo Health Initiative (VHI) to promote preventive health measures and empower individuals to live healthier, longer lives.

The trustees, with a deep personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle, recognized critical gaps in the preventive healthcare market—ranging from poor diagnostic quality to a lack of transparency and actionability in lifestyle recommendations. To address these challenges, they assembled a team of biomedical scientists and data experts, partnering with top academic labs to advance research in predictive health modeling.

The primary objective of VoLo Health Initiative is to develop innovative computational approaches that translate complex health-related datasets into actionable information about individuals’ lifestyles, including diet, sleep, exercise, and medication. By bridging the informational gap, VHI empowers individuals to make informed and effective health decisions, fostering a more clear and accessible preventive healthcare landscape.

Orange County Public Schools At three Title I schools in Orlando, Florida, teachers from Orange County Public Schools created an award-winning program like no other in the country. Eco Club is an after-school program that educates today’s youth about the importance of conservation, sustainability, and stewardship. With VoLo Foundation's support, Eco Club engages students in taking action to improve the environment through project-based learning experiences in nutrition, sustainability, and agriculture.

Sachamama x Ocean Conservancy® Ocean Conservancy is investing in research, leadership, and advocacy to advance effective science-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife populations that depend on it.

Sachamama is a nonprofit organization working to build support for a clean energy economy for all while cultivating sustainable attitudes, behaviors, and lifestyles. In 2020, Ocean Conservancy partnered with Sachamama to connect communities, particularly Latino neighborhoods, to ocean health, climate change, and biodiversity to spur actions and policies to protect marine ecosystems.

The CLEO® Institute (CLEO) Founded in 2010, The CLEO Institute exists for the sole purpose of building climate literacy and spurring climate action.

Working with multiple local organizations, university scientists, and other local leaders, CLEO is viewed as the go-to regional source for credible, vetted climate science, and expert insights into current and projected climate change impacts. In 2020, with the support of VoLo Foundation, CLEO partnered with the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Miami-based agency, Zubi Advertising, and award-winning artist Bob Partington to create the Melting Florida campaign, which aimed to raise awareness in our community about how rapidly rising temperatures are affecting the state’s wildlife and people. The melting wax sculptures were an artistic metaphor for the toll human-caused climate change is taking on Florida’s wildlife and people. The campaign, garnering the support of several elected Florida leaders, was featured in hundreds of media outlets, including CNN, Univision, Fox, and many others.

Thais Lopez Vogel: Named One of the 100 Most Influential Latinos in Climate Action for 2020 In 2020, VoLo Foundation’s co-founder and climate advocate Thais Lopez Vogel was honored as one of the “100 Most Influential Latinos Committed to Climate Action” by Sachamama, a leading organization mobilizing the Latino community for environmental justice. This recognition highlighted Thais’ dedication to raising awareness about climate change and promoting sustainable solutions. Reflecting on the acknowledgment, she stated, “This recognition inspires me to continue educating communities and empowering them to act. Climate change is happening now, and there is no future without environmental education."

Thais was also featured on the same list in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024, underscoring her ongoing leadership in mobilizing climate action. Her consistent advocacy has helped spotlight the Latino community's role in driving solutions for a sustainable future, showing that education and action are key to addressing the planet’s most pressing challenges. Being featured four times affirms Thais’ place as a pivotal leader in the fight for climate justice and environmental advocacy.

2021 April

Birth of Florida Climate Week TM Pioneering Climate Action in the Sunshine State In 2021, inspired by Climate Week New York City, we launched Florida Climate Week (FCW) to address our state’s climate vulnerability. Due to the global pandemic, FCW was held exclusively as a virtual event that year. However, starting in 2023, we introduced inperson activities, which have been a great success. The week-long series continues to bring together leaders, experts, and advocates to raise awareness and drive solutions for a sustainable Florida. We are especially grateful for the widespread support, as numerous cities across Florida have proclaimed Florida Climate Week year after year. Supported by speakers, organizations, and local governments, our initiative offers both live and virtual components, with our website serving as a key hub for collaboration and connection.

Debut of Climate Correction: The Podcast In 2021, we expanded our educational outreach by launching the Climate Correction podcast, hosted by Shannon Maganiezin. Initially releasing episodes bi-weekly, the show now offers exclusive monthly content featuring insightful conversations with scientists, journalists, policymakers, and climate experts. Guests from renowned organizations such as The CLEO Institute, Ocean Conservancy, NRDC, and EDF share their perspectives on the challenges of adapting to and mitigating climate change while highlighting effective solutions already in action. Through these engaging discussions, the podcast aims to inform and empower listeners to recognize the profound impacts of climate change on our daily lives and to inspire meaningful participation in creating a sustainable future.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital This top-ranked children's hospital, founded in 1950, has been inspiring hope and promoting lifelong health by providing exceptional care to every child. It has remained dedicated to providing amazing care to the community and continues to lead the way in innovation and excellence. In 2021, VoLo Foundation committed to helping finance The Heart Program at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, now called The Heart Institute, and supporting extraordinary pediatric surgical treatments. Cox Science Center and Aquarium In 2021, VoLo Foundation partnered with the Cox Science Center and Aquarium located in West Palm Beach, FL to display the "Earth Matters: Rethink the Future" exhibit, highlighting the importance of creating a sustainable future for the planet. This presentation features five interactive learning zones teaching children about ecosystems at risk, the effect of climate change on tree growth, strategies to restore coral reefs, how much power it takes to energize an entire town, and more. The highly successful showcase was created in Australia to deep dive into the science behind some of the changes we are seeing in our environment.

The Ohio State University In partnership with The Ohio State University, VoLo Foundation supported the scientific research conducted by the Ice Core Paleoclimatology group at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. This collaboration facilitated ice core drilling projects and analysis, student participation in the research, and long-term storage of the ice, all under the direction of Drs. Lonnie G. Thompson and Ellen MosleyThompson.

The Ice Core Paleoclimatology group has a distinguished history of conducting cutting- edge science, extending ice coring beyond polar regions to ice fields atop the highest tropical and subtropical mountains. Their aim is to collect a global array of ice cores, providing high-resolution climatic and environmental histories to enhance our understanding of the complex interactions within the Earth's coupled climate system.

Wynwood Plog Run On April 10, 2021, we celebrated our commitment to environmental protection with the "Plog Run" event in Wynwood, Miami. Participants combined exercise with eco-consciousness by running through the neighborhood and picking up trash along the way. The activity was a success, with approximately 400 pounds of plastic waste collected in 150 bags. Through this initiative, we aimed to inspire and empower others to take similar actions, highlighting the importance of community involvement in protecting our planet.

Her research aims to understand how varying levels of exposure and vulnerability to sea level rise influence climate mobility outcomes for residents across Miami-Dade County, FL. Nadia's impressive background includes research positions at the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery in New York and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Exposure Research Lab in Athens, GA.

VoLo Partner Program Visits: Reconnecting in 2021 In 2021, the team was delighted to visit some of our partner programs and gain deeper insights into their work and mission. After the pandemic lockdown, reconnecting with people in person became more important than ever. These visits allowed us to strengthen our bonds, understand their challenges and successes firsthand, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their vital efforts. Engaging directly with the communities we support has always been a priority, and 2021 was a year of rekindling those essential connections.

2021 Annual Report 2021 was a year of positive impact, as the world recovered from COVID-19, the urgency of addressing climate change became more apparent. VoLo Foundation launched the Climate Correction podcast to connect audiences with environmental experts and solutions for reducing carbon footprints. Our fully virtual Florida Climate Week and Climate Correction conference, held from April 19-23, featured over 133 speakers and drew more than 1,200 attendees, focusing on impactful climate solutions.

Supported by The CLEO Institute, FIU, Ocean Conservancy, and others, the week-long engagement received official proclamations from cities across Florida. This year’s Florida Climate Week also garnered significant backing with proclamations issued by Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Nikki Fried and the cities of Tampa, Gainesville, Pensacola, Sarasota, and Clearwater. Moffitt Cancer Center Moffitt's mission is to save more lives by accelerating science with great urgency to create innovative cancer treatments. The Tampa-based facility is Florida’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, meeting rigorous standards for transdisciplinary, advanced research to develop new approaches for preventing, diagnosing, and treating the disease. VoLo Foundation funds the ongoing work of Dr. Jose Guevara-Patiño, MD, Ph.D., and his team, as they make strides on bladder and kidney research, utilizing the immune system to combat this illness.

Citizens' Climate Education (CCE) Citizens’ Climate Education is a nonpartisan grassroots advocacy organization that trains and activates a coalition of diverse groups to build support for effective climate legislation. In 2022, VoLo Foundation supported their Conservative Outreach Initiative, which aimed to engage people and foster collaboration across the political spectrum to achieve impactful change in environmental policy. Fast-acting and innovative sustainability measures are urgently needed in the United States, and bipartisan cooperation is crucial to making this happen. CCE’s Conservative Outreach Initiative recruits, educates, and mobilizes politically right-of-center individuals to strategically build political will for climate solutions in Congress.

University of California Irvine Center At the University of California Irvine, Dr. Virginia E. Kimonis is particularly interested in inherited muscle disorders that occur in combination with Paget's disease of bone and/or frontotemporal dementia. At the molecular genetics lab, named the Kimonis Laboratory, scientists and doctors are studying genetic causes of muscle disease and other rare genetic conditions. VoLo Foundation's grant supports their research to find a cure for those suffering from these hereditary inclusion body myopathies.

Precious Nyabami Presenting her project at Climate Correction Conference 2022

This year, the VoLo VISTA Award honored Precious Nyabami for her project, "Carbon Sequestration: Rewriting the Role of Modern Agriculture in Climate Change." As a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of Florida’s Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences Department, Precious focuses on using cover crops to improve soil health in Florida’s vegetable production systems. She holds a bachelor's degree in integrated science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has previous experience as an intern for One-Acre Fund in Rwanda and a research assistant at the University of Nebraska. Precious is also involved in the Women Lead: UF Institute for Early Career Scholars as well as the Soil and Water Science DEI committee.

In 2022, VoLo Foundation's work was defined by one word: ACTION. Recognizing the urgent need to address environmental deterioration, we concentrated on advancing immediate change in both public and private sectors. With Florida—one of the most climate-impacted regions—as our primary focus, we supported over 106 organizations, 70 of which are in Florida, and partnered with innovative programs in environmental, educational, and health sectors. Our efforts amplified our voice by expanding our Climate Correction podcast and launching its Spanish version, Corrección Climática. We also saw a significant increase in social media engagement and media coverage. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 was a pivotal moment, reinforcing our optimism and determination to continue driving impactful climate action.

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park VoLo Foundation supports John D. MacArthur Beach State Park's mission to safeguard its 436 acres of diverse and undisturbed subtropical coastal habitat from development.

This preserve, established in 1989, provides students in grades 1-12 to visit and take part in the Environmental Education Programs. These programs offer future environmentalists, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and many more with hands-on learning experiences at the site. Students can learn about natural habitats in their community, how to protect our planet, and methods to act as conservation advocates.

Water People Theater Water People Theater is an inclusive, bilingual, Latino nonprofit theatrical organization devoted to igniting change using performance art. They engage audiences in social and environmental issues to encourage individuals to embrace values that promote betterment for the planet and empower change in communities.

VoLo Foundation supports Water People Theater in their goal to develop high-quality professionals and foster better human beings through the reinforcement of social values in children and adolescents using theater, as well as their commitment to achieving a more just society.

Best Buddies ® Impacting the lives of over 1.3 million people, Best Buddies is committed to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of the IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) community. VoLo Foundation supports Best Buddies in Florida, as they ensure that individuals with IDD are learning regarding climate-specific topics and enacting positive global change through training, advocacy, and civic engagement. VoLo is proud of the way Best Buddies educates people with IDD about bugs and their significant role in our environment. They also host trivia nights to create dialogue focused on positive climate action taking place in the world. Climate experts are joining "Working Wednesdays" to guide those looking for work on various climate initiatives in which they can participate.

University of California, Berkeley Foundation At the University of California Berkeley, Dr. Lisa Barcellos is spearheading efforts to develop a new comprehensive study investigating the effects of wildfire smoke exposure on the epigenome and health in a multi-ethnic cohort.

Epigenetic mechanisms are believed to play a central role not only as relevant elements of pathogenic mechanisms in human health and disease but also as mediators of the body adaptation to environmental stimuli, such as air pollutants from exposure to wildfires. VoLo Foundation values this research recognizing the increasing understanding that the environment plays a significant role in human health and disease.

The Everglades Foundation The Everglades Foundation works diligently to restore and protect America's Everglades through science, advocacy, and education. Additionally, VoLo Foundation's grants have facilitated the establishment of the VoLo ForEverglades Fellowship, which is open to full-time graduate research students from across the nation, who are pursuing research in climate change evaluation for the Everglades.

Project Alianza Project Alianza is a women-led organization striving to educate the next generation in rural areas in Nicaragua and Guatemala. Together, VoLo Foundation and Project Alianza have created VoLando: a training program upskilling and deploying women as Community Educators in climate vulnerable communities. The purpose of this program is to train local women as educators, mentor girls through school, and develop, disseminate, and facilitate teaching high-quality reading materials for youth in their communities.

In 2024, VoLo Foundation proudly awarded the VISTA Award to Ivan Oyege, Priyanka Belbase, Moses Kiwanuka, and Jordan Prats for their groundbreaking project on evaluating plant varieties for green roofs in South Florida.

Their innovative approach addresses heat islands, aids in carbon sequestration, and helps manage rainwater in a region prone to extreme weather. By identifying plant species resilient to the unique subtropical climate, the team has created a guide to improve urban sustainability and energy efficiency, while also reducing flooding. Their work represents a key step toward a greener, more resilient future for Miami and beyond.

2024 Influencer: Sophie Ringel Leading a Community Movement for a Cleaner Future In 2024, VoLo Foundation proudly welcomed Sophie Ringel, founder of Clean Miami Beach, as our new social media influencer. Driven by a deep passion for the ocean and its wildlife, Sophie turned her personal commitment to daily beach cleanups into a powerful community movement, inspiring others to take action for a cleaner environment.

Over the years, her efforts have led to the removal of more than 100,000 pounds of trash from Miami’s beaches, a remarkable milestone that earned her recognition from the Mayor of Miami Beach.

Sophie’s journey from solo cleanups to mobilizing an entire community demonstrates the profound impact one person can make, especially in addressing the critical issues of climate change and plastic pollution. In addition to her cleanup efforts, she is dedicated to educating the next generation about environmental responsibility, believing that teaching children to care for the planet is essential for its future. Her in-person event during Florida Climate Week was a tremendous success, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd, further amplifying her message of environmental stewardship. We are thrilled to continue collaborating with Sophie and look forward to expanding our efforts to inspire even more people to join the fight for a healthier planet.

PADDLING, PERSEVERANCE AND FRIENDSHIP Growing up in Honolulu, I always felt a connection to Oahu. I graduated from Punahou School in 1991 and visit my parents every summer. During one of these trips, I stayed in a home above the Waimanalo Canoe Club. Little did I know this place would challenge me in unexpected ways.

Canoeing had been a memory from my high school days, so seeing the sleek, traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoes gliding through the waters of Waimanalo Bay stirred something within me. Eager to reconnect with the sport, I went down to the club and asked if I could join a session.

The seasoned paddlers eyed me with curiosity and skepticism, recognizing me as a “haole,” a non-native.

They decided to test my resolve, handing me the heaviest, slowest, and hardest canoe to row.

Undeterred, I accepted the challenge. They watched, expecting me to give up, but I didn’t. By overcoming the challenge, I was welcomed into their Ohana (family). This camaraderie blossomed into a deep friendship, extending beyond the shores of Waimanalo Bay. My involvement with the Waimanalo Canoe Club grew,

and I proposed a sponsorship for them from VoLo Foundation. Since our organization focuses on sustainability and community enrichment, we found a perfect match in the canoe club for our organizational goals, with its strong ties to Hawaiian culture and environmental stewardship.

Together, we aim to preserve the coastal ecosystem, support youth programs, and promote cultural heritage. The partnership thrived, rooted in mutual appreciation and a shared vision for the future.

Every summer, I return to the island, not just to see my parents but to paddle with my ohana. What started as a simple desire to row has grown into something far more meaningful—a testament to perseverance, friendship, and the enduring spirit of aloha.
