welcome It is with great collective effort, excitement and planning, that we find ourselves back at base for the 15th annual Rainbow Serpent Festival. A lot has changed over 15 years around the periphery of Rainbow – the music, the culture, the technology - but the spirit, the drive, and the feeling remain intact. Rainbow is a weekend to re-energise, re-set, re-connect and most importantly re-focus. A chance to recharge our souls, planting seeds and dreams of new, to live our potential in the world with hope and optimism, based upon a platform of creativity, celebration, gratitude and love. Wherever the Rainbow Serpent leads you over the next four days, we encourage you to open your mind and heart, explore your creativity and immerse yourself in a festival experience of community, sharing and celebration. Enjoy!

Rainbow Serpent Story Distinctly Australian, the name ‘Rainbow Serpent’ comes from the Dreamtime creation story told by the traditional owners of this land. Often stories vary between Indigenous tribes, however the Rainbow Serpent story is special as it is one of the few common to all. The Rainbow Serpent is protector of the land, its people and is the source of all life. In the Dreamtime, the world was in darkness - flat, bare and cold. The Rainbow Serpent slept underground with all the animal tribes of the world in her belly. When it was time, she awakened, pushed up through the layers of Earth and gave birth to the animal tribes, formed the land, mountains and hills before spilling water over the new landscapes to create rivers and lakes. Then she created the sun, the moon, the fire and all the colours. The symbol of the serpent or snake is sacred in many cultures. Not only does it connect tribes, it also unites people of different cultures and walks of life throughout the world.

site conditions Welcome home! We’re now starting to settle into our new site and feel very fortunate to be a part of its present and future. We hope you are enjoying, however with this privilege comes a little responsibility. As part of our arrangements to use this beautiful site, there are some conditions we need you to be aware of and we hope you will respect.

Fire Risk Warning

We are very lucky to have the support of the property owners, the local community and emergency services to allow this event to take place. The rules are few but, for the future of Rainbow Serpent, they must be followed.

Forest Access

Fire Warning A scorching summer in the area has created a very high fire risk. Absolutely no candles, BBQs, gas stoves or fires permitted at the event. Sorry, we know that most of you are responsible, but it is a condition required by the local CFA.

4

Be very careful with your cigarette butts and make sure you dispose of them properly. Pick-up your free canisters from the Info Tent.

As you may know, a new fire warning system has been introduced by the CFA in Victoria. If there is a Code Red forecast leading up to or during the festival, patrons may be advised to seek a safer place to be rather than onsite. In this rare scenario, event days may be cancelled or postponed. Strict conditions apply for access to the forest: • Access is prohibited on days of Total Fire Ban. • Only use the gateway entrances. • No smoking or naked flames at any time. • No camping. • Always go with a friend and do not wander beyond sight of the festival grounds. • Respect the natural environment and leave it as you found it

Hill Access The granite hill provides a great view of the festival site, however please do not climb past the boulders. They are dangerous and home to many snakes.

important rules No Glass or Excessive Alcohol

No Quad or Mini Bikes

Thank you everyone for the huge reduction in glass being brought onsite. But there is still too much and it poses a severe risk, not just for patrons during the event, but also for the farmer and animals who call the site home for the rest of the year.

These are dangerous and selfish, ruining the campground atmosphere for everyone else.

No Parking on Internal Roads

No Generators or Sound Systems

Keep 6 metres clearance at all times. They may seem a little hard to see at times, but the internal tracks around the site need this clearance in order for fire and medical vehicles to access all parts of the campgrounds.

No Fires, BBQs or Fireworks

No Anti-Social Behavior Everyone is here to enjoy themselves and escape nonsense.

The campgrounds are places for rest and relaxation, not for listening to the sounds of generators or having someone else’s musical tastes forced upon you.

No Pets

There is a severe and very real fire risk with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Including and especially dogs No excuses, unless you are blind or otherwise reliant on one.

Drive at Walking Pace Onsite

You Must Wear Your Wrist Strap at all Times

This is a festival site, not a highway, respect the punters already onsite and only drive at walking pace. Driving around during the event = danger + dust.

It is the only way we know you have gained legitimate entry to the festival and have contributed your share to the staging of the event.

5

Camping & Parking Guidelines • Follow crew’s instructions at all times. • Do not park on the road, keep 6 metres width clear. • Camping is only permitted in designated areas. If you are unsure, don’t camp there. • Keep space between campsites (2 metres minimum). • Always drive slowly and carefully, being mindful of the dust you’re creating. • Once you have set up camp introduce yourself to your neighbors. We predict that you’ll get on famously.

6

advice & guidelines

Important Stuff For Safety • NO FIRES – this is very important so we’ll say it again – NO FIRES! No gas cookers, no naked flames, no candles and no campfires. • NO GLASS. • Take note of EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY AREAS – Main Stage and beyond East Camping and South Camping areas on the festival map. In case of emergency follow the instructions of the wardens. • DRINK PLENTY OF WATER - free water is available near each toilet/ shower block. • LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER if you think someone needs help, offer it. • FIRST AID & DANCEWIZE are onsite for you physical and

mental safety! Check site map for their location. • DON’T WANDER ALONE always let your friends know where you are going. Never leave the festival without letting someone know. • Looking for a RIDE HOME - visit the message board at the Info Tent. • BE AWARE OF THE HEAT & SUN - sunburn and sunstroke can really ruin your weekend. • DO NOT DRIVE INTOXICATED OR SLEEP DEPRIVED - please note that drug testing is operational on Victorian roads. • Please REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY - to security or the Info Tent. • RESPECT THE ART & DÉCOR artists put a lot of heart, soul and time into their pieces so please don’t damage or steal them. • SHARE! - Share water, share food, share beer, share laughter and share space. • DON’T PEAK TOO EARLY - this is a four-day event, remember to save some energy for Monday – we certainly have!

Time To Go Home Please, everybody must VACATE THE PROPERTY BY MIDDAY TUESDAY so that we can clean the site. These are the landowners’ wishes and form part of the council permit conditions.

sustainability Recycling & Waste Our soul mission at Rainbow is to re-use and recycle as much as we possibly can. We abhor waste. To do this we go to immense lengths. To minimise landfill we tip out each bin then separate and sort all useful things into different piles. We do this for ten hours per day, rain or shine. We recycle all aluminum cans. All cups, bowls and plates from food stalls are composted onsite and used to grow new trees. Piles of cardboard are pulped and plastic bottles are compacted into cubes and eventually shipped to China. Hundreds of cheap broken camp chairs are stripped of their fabric, the frames given to a local scrap yard. Abandoned thongs are washed and given to charity and litres of used cooking oil are given to biodiesel producers. Phew! But there are some things we can’t find a use for including carpet, broken lounges and tents which all, unfortunately, go to landfill.

Here's how you can help make this Rainbow the most sustainable yet:

We have several initiatives designed to reduce landfill waste:

Bag Deposit Scheme It’s simple. We take your deposit at the gate, then on your way out your $5 is refunded to you when you hand back your recycling bag and token. Refunds available from Sunday to Tuesday.

Loot Ute Have you filled your recycling bag already? But it’s only Friday! Empty it in the Loot Ute driving by your campsite in the mornings. Listen out for the bell and bring out your fallen soldiers.

Canaconda See the beast grow every time you deposit a can. The real Rainbow Slurpent can be found lurking in the undergrowth, ready to devour your aluminum. Watch out for his nasty little brother, Nangaconda, hiding nearby.

Use The Right Bins Reduce our hand sorting and help us make more compost by putting your food and paper crockery into the green bins. Everything you buy to eat or drink from food stalls can be broken down, composted and used to plant and feed trees around the site. Check signage on rubbish bins to help you determine which recycling or waste bin you use to bin it.

7

The Rainbow culture has always embodied respect for each other, our selves and the land that is our playground. By bringing onto the festival site only what you intend to

take home you contribute to a more sustainable festival.

Revegetation Areas

environment

Over 800 trees have been planted on site since last year, slowly growing to provide shade and protection from the wind. Please don’t enter or camp in the vegetation areas, so we can give the best start to our native mix of saplings.

Composting Toilets

We are sure you will all agree the composting toilets onsite are pretty Make the grass green again when you awesome! The fire breathing behemoth of Rainbow Serpent runs from dusk on Saturday until late Sunday afternoon and has more kick than a mule on steroids. Hosting the Main Opening Ceremony on Saturday evening, we encourage you to wander down to soak up the Rainbow vibe and be welcomed to country by our Indigenous family, especially if it’s your first time at the festival! The music then picks up the pace until mid morning on Sunday when it eases back into lush grooves and warm melodies until it closes.

Market Stage The Market Stage has an atmosphere you have to experience to believe. Hosting a massive mix of artists across all genres, we guarantee you will find something you like. Connecting with our traditional Indigenous culture and sharing in these traditions, offers our community a greater understanding of our culture’s wisdom and roots. With a deeper connection to our Ancestors and the Spirits of the Land, we can create a harmonious relationship with Earth and our people.
