Epigrams of university life Inspired by Catullus

Paulus is the best cook in the whole residence.

He can make pasta with six different kinds of sauce.

I am your friend, Melissa, so it is natural for me to help you find boys to hook up with.

But I will not: because I am also your roommate!

I always do my homework, Silvanus, and I always go to class.

You never do your homework, Silvanus, nor do you go to class.

Now your assignment is due tomorrow.

Silvanus, have you baked this nice big cake for me?

Atticus is locked out, again.

Atticus texts me, again.

I let him in the building— again.

You had better not lose your keys again, Atticus: or else I may lose my phone.

Hispanicus is wearing pajamas.

Aulus is only in his underwear.

Gallus and Clodius are wrapped in a bath towel.

What sort of party is this, you ask?

The early morning fire alarm party.

Germania is weeping.

Why, you, ask?

Has she broken up with her boyfriend?

No. Her roommate has found one.

ides of march you and i met when the pillars of rome still streaked stalks to the horizon and young gods roamed the earth. you raise a bottle to your lips and i see the chalices of bacchus at a golden table, my fingers are tracing the grape leaves. don’t fight the river tiber pulsing in your veins. the same primordial twilight settles over us now. i remember those fingers lacing a lyre that shone like the sun in the adriatic you used to freeze when i touched your hand just like this. and this. ancient rome was almost yesterday and i know you know it too. we are emperors in leather jackets. take me on an adventure through a life i’ve once lived. hold me like you’ve done for millennia. this is rome once more, let me fall in love all over again.

Reality is stirred; a fine bouquet.

Search for the Self, unveiled by soft’ning frost.

Enjoy felicity of final waltz.

Call for Submissions Volare 1.3: Sacrifice

Volare, McGill’s Creative Classics Magazine, invites you to submit your work to our Winter 2018 issue: Sacrifice.

From the Hekatomb to the gruesome human “sacrifices” of Attic tragedy, sacrifice pervades the ancient world. But what does sacrifice mean today? How do we interpret the sacrifices we come across in our ancient sources? Send us your poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, visual art, or multimedia creations exploring the theme of sacrifice.
