decision that you will not regret. There is no better time to be a ‘Yote! We have a tradition of success here at USD and are continuing to grow that legacy onward.

We have continued to improve the image of our campus, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful academic and extra-curricular buildings and resources that USD has to offer.

We have grown into a Division 1 university that students wish to be a part of. We play dynamic games against renewed rivalries, play large schools from across the nation and impress our opponents with the competitive spirit that the Coyote Crazies’

mentality brings to the Dome.

USD has built a legacy for producing prestigious and incredibly successful alumni, a group that I’m sure you will fall into down the road. But don’t get too excited yet. You have much to experience as an undergraduate first.

You know the saying “It’s not about what you know; it’s about who you know.” Well at USD, you get both. Our academic programs on campus provide the best classroom experience for all students, the best mentors anyone could ask for and a solid degree for you to leave with your head held high.

Also, the friendships

that you will make at this university are ones you will never forget. As I mentioned before, USD will become your home away from home because of these friendships and experiences that you will have here.

Furthermore, I challenge you to get involved and get out of your comfort zone. College is a time for you to really make a name for yourself. You have over 120 student organizations to choose from.

Whether it’s joining one of the strongest Greek systems in the nation, intramural and club sports or any interest group you can think of, I encourage you to get involved. If that isn’t

enough, our university has events planned to give you that well-deserved break from homework, such as Coyote athletic events, concerts, speakers, plays and so much more!

As your student body president, I am here to serve YOU. If there is anything I can do to help you while you are here, please do not hesitate to talk to me. I care very much about your success at USD, as do countless others on campus, and I will do my best to make your journey successful.

‘Onward’ to $250 million Evaluation deems campus Make room for the Greeks University of South Dakota leaders reached a fundraising milestone, completing a quarter of a seven-year, $250 million fundraising campaign — making it the largest philanthropic drive in the university’s history.

A comprehensive campaign impacting the entire USD campus, the “Onward South Dakota” campaign is expected to increase student scholarship funds, attract and retain a more diverse faculty, maintain student and program enrichment endowments and fuel capital revitalization projects,

said USD Foundation President Steve Brown.

“This campaign is more far reaching to more Brown constituencies than others (fundraising campaigns) may have been before,” Brown said. In its silent phase, Brown said “Onward” had raised nearly $75 million in gifts and pledges since its Jan. 1, 2012 launch. Averaging about $1

President James Abbott said in a release by the University of South Dakota that “insensitive remarks and rude treatment of minority groups on campus” will not be tolerated by the university.

Abbott’s comments were incited by an incident reported during the university’s homecoming, when student organization Strollers admitted that members on their Dakota Days float taunted USD

student Alexis Oskolkoff and her 9-year-old son for wearing traditional Native American regalia.

The students reportedly yelled out, “Look at those Indians,” and began making war whoops with their hands to their mouths.

Lindsay Sparks, assistant director of student life, said students within Strollers have done everything asked of them to make up for this incident, which Abbott described as deplorable.

Huskers’ Craig Smith takes over Coyotes men’s basketball team In a span of less than 72 hours, Craig Smith went from being called upon to coach against Baylor in the NCAA Tournament to taking over the South Dakota Coyotes men’s basketball program.

Smith, a Stephen, Minnesota native and University of North Dakota alum-

nus, said he can hardly wait to take over a team that has failed to rack up many noteworthy achievements in the Summit League since joining in 2011.

“If every fiber in my bones didn’t want this job, I wouldn’t be here,” Smith said. “I’m truly excited to get to work.”

DakotaDome sports facility construction ‘the next step as we continue to elevate the university as a whole’ Nathan Ellenbecker

With the groundbreaking of a $66 million sports arena, track complex and soccer fields project beginning in May, the University of South Dakota is looking to make vast improvements to its athletics department.

The project will connect a sports science lab and a basketball/volleyball arena to the DakotaDome, and is estimated to be completed ahead of the 2016-17 academic year, according to the university’s athletic department.

Construction was set for May 12, but has been moved to an undecided date due to the finalization of contracts, said David Herbster, athletic director for USD. “It’s the next step as we continue to elevate the university as a whole,” Herbster said. “It’s the next phase of the university’s life, much the same as when USD broke ground for the business school, student union, Coyote Village and the Wellness Center.”

The 6,000-person seating basketball/volleyball arena addition is expected to lure recruits, who previously only saw volleyball matches tucked above student seating in the DakotaDome.

Basketball will now have an arena-style court and crowd area, not a court placed in the middle of the track inside the DakotaDome. Premium seating in the arena will include 60 court-side seats and 180 club seats.

Herbster said USD and the athletics department is ready to move onward.

“This will allow our teams to expand and have those dedicated areas for the team year-round that we don’t have now,” Herbster said. “For basketball, it will feel like you’re actually in a basketball arena. For volleyball, we’ll be able to seat more than 350 people to come watch a match — those things feed off each other.”

Craig Smith, who previously coached men’s basketball at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and will enter his first year as head men’s basketball coach for USD for the upcoming season, said he saw the effect of a new basketball arena at UNL and expects the new sports complex to add another dimension to the USD’s recruiting.

“The new arena is a symbol of where we are going,” Smith said. “It’s a sign of our commitment to Division I

athletics and our commitment to excellence.”

Aside from the arena, however, is the track and soccer complex. The new outdoor track area will feature an NCAA-certified nine-lane track with areas for shot put, discus, pole vault, long jump, triple jump and more events.

The Coyotes have never claimed an outdoor Summit League conference title.

USD is scheduled to host the 2016 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The soccer fields will include one practice and one competition field and bleacher seating for 1,000 attendees.

The sports science lab, which will house many university programs including kinesiology and sports science, occupational therapy,

sports medicine and physical therapy, will connect the basketball/volleyball arena with the DakotaDome.

After being established about three years ago, Andrew Shim, chair of the Kinesiology and Sports Science department, said the department is happy to accept their new home.

The department started with 40 students and in under five years has grown to

just under 300 students today. Shim said he was asked to make a big growth in the program in five years, and he’s proud to say it took less time.

“This division has developed enough respect over a short period of time to be considered a moving part of USD,” Shim said. “It’s not just honorable, but it is also encouraging and highly appreciated.”

While South Dakota resident college students are breathing easier due the finalization of the 2014-2015 tuition freeze approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents, out-of-state students will have to scrounge their wallets in order to adjust to a 7 percent increase in out-of-state tuition costs.

The SDBOR met April 2-3 in Madison and officially set tuition and fees for the upcoming school year, with no changes to in-state tuition

and fees.

Nearly $4 million was appropriated by the state legislature in order to make the tuition buy down possible.

The buy down alleviates some of the largest costs associated with tuition rates, such as inflation, operating expenses, faculty salary increases and health insurance costs.

Janelle Toman, director of communications for the SDBOR said the SDBOR lobbied diligently to convey the importance of a tuition buy down to Governor Dennis Daugaard and state Legisla-

tors.

“The request to freeze tuition for resident students was the Board of Regents number one priority as we were putting together our budget for the upcoming fiscal year,” she said.

However, the tuition buy down was not large enough to also cover out-of-state tuition costs for students.

“It was certainly not preferable to have anyone pay increasing costs, but when we looked at the bottom line of what we were going to have to request of the Legislature to support the freeze,

we were already up to $4 million to pay for the tuition buy down for resident students,” Toman said.

Sophomore Rachael Ruba, who lives in the Sioux Falls area, said the tuition freeze will help keep the costs of attending college lower. Ruba said a third of her tuition and fees costs are covered through financial aid, a third through scholarships and a third through out-of-pocket funds.

“I’m happy about the freeze for me personally, but I’m disappointed in the 7 percent increase,” she said.

“I don’t think it’s fair they put the burden only on out-ofstate students.”

The estimated cost of tuition for out-0f-state undergraduate students enrolling in 30 credit hours during the 2014-2015 school year is $18,926.

Toman said the tuition rates the SDBOR charges are “considerably less” than what other state’s tuition rates often run for.

“Reflecting on the fact that we already had a rate that was reasonable, we felt an additional minor adjustment to achieve (the tuition

freeze) would not price us out of the market,” she said.

Junior Joe Hoelker is an out-of-state student and takes out student loans to pay for all of his schooling.

He said he wasn’t surprised by the legislation.

“It seems to go up every year,” Hoelker said. “It is a little bit upsetting. The real question for me is to know why this is happening to just (out-of-state students).”

The tuition freeze for instate students and tuition increase for out-of-state students will go into effect starting with the summer term.

When it comes to food options and dining, a lot has changed for students at the University of South Dakota over the past five months.

Another change is coming their way in fall 2014 as USD Dining has made ammendments and additions to the meal plan options.

In order to adjust to the new dining setting at USD, with the addition of three national food chains and a fourth on its way, new flex and blocked meal options have opened up to firstyears and upperclassmen alike.

New to this year are is an extended meals option Yote Pack 120. This options would be suited best for students looking to visit the Commons often, with only $600 in flex

dollars.

Several factors go into what meal plan is right for which students.

Many of the meal options are open to specific students at USD. Yote Pack 55, Paw Power Pack and Paw Pleaser are open to only third and fourth year students or second year students living in McFadden, Brookman or Coyote Village. Paw Pride is open to third and fourth year students and second year McFadden and Coyote Village residents.

Meal plans are open to all eligible off-campus students, however, Paw Print is designed specficially with off-campus students in mind. Offering the minimum amount of flex at the smallest cost.

Costs for each meal plan also vary.

The expansion of the Muenster University Center increased the building to around 100,000 square feet of student dining, meeting space and staff offices. The MUC can now accommodate 1,200 students, more than doubling the 450 who could fit before.

The MUC expansion brought in additional dining options including Einstein Bagel Bros., Qdoba Mexican Grill and Chickfil-A. The Commons was moved from the North Complex and relocated to where the Marketplace used to be.

The Marketplace was moved across the MUC and offers meals purchased through flex or

Coyote Cash. The meal portion of meal plans is used to purchase food in the new Commons location, which is buffet style.

Flex and Coyote Cash can be used to purchase food at Einstein Bagel Bros., Qdoba Mexican Grill and Chick-fil-A. The expansion added new seating areas for students, including additional booths and high-top tables and bars. Booths were equipped with outlets for computers and some contain televisions.

The new Marketplace area has a sixteen-panel television usually consisting of multiple feeds.

Construction was completed in the spring of 2014 at the cost of about $10 million.

Alpha Phi international Fraternity was founded at Syracuse University in 1872 as one of the first Greek societies for women. Alpha Phi is dedicated to promoting sisterhood, cultivating leadership, encouraging intellectual curiosity, and advocating service. The organization is comprised of more than 150 collegiate chapters and more than 130 alumnae chapters through out the United States and Canada. The Alpha Phi Foundation is the fraternity’s philanthropic and educational partner. Through contributions from chapters, individual members and friends, the foundation supports women’s cardiac health and other charitable and educational projects. Together, Alpha Phi International Fraternity and Foundation develop character for a lifetime.

Upon the fraternity’s founding, Alpha Phi adopted six values which they uphold today. These values include: sisterhood, scholarship, service, character development, leadership, and loyalty. Last year alone Psi chapter raised over $21,000 at their annual Red Dress Gala. The gala is a silent and live auction that benefits the Alpha Phi Foundation. In addition to the gala, Psi chapter hosts their annual Alpha Phiesta, which is an all you can eat taco feed that raised over $4,500 for the Vermillion Backpack Program this past spring. Because of all these successful philanthropy events, Psi chapter was nominated for a philanthropy award at the International level.

Because service is one of their values, the women of Alpha Phi participated in over 1500 hours of individual community service last year. Projects included the Vermillion Backpack Program, Welcome Table, SESDAC, and many more. One of their main events each year is the Frances E. Willard Day of Service. This is annual service projected is dedicated to the advancement of women, which Alpha Phi chapters all across the country take part in. The Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi spent this day with the local Vermillion Girl Scout Troops.

In addition to the community service and philanthropy opportunities, scholarship is one of the most important value to the women of Psi chapter. Fall semester there were 21 women who achieved a perfect 4.0 and 63 members on the Dean’s List. The women create scholarship groups to help each other receive academic success and are often rewarded for their hard work. Each spring, Psi chapter holds a scholarship day and this past spring awarded 49 members with scholarships totaling $29,420.

‘Don’t spend your freshman year alone’ JACKIE HENDRY is a junior majoring in contemporary media and journalism and Native Studies.

I had lunch with President Abbott and a few other honors students last week. While the group of us munched chips and lemon squares, he and the younger students

discussed dorm life for first years.

Abbott noted how disappointed he is by how often he’ll hear of first year girls spending all their time alone in their rooms, missing home and eventually transferring.

I sat there in silence, wondering who told President Abbott about my freshman year.

Adjusting to college was like pulling teeth for me. After having the same friends for 90 percent of my life, I hadn’t realized how introverted and

shy I really could be.

Being so far away from home certainly didn’t help either. I’d been so excited and proud to pick this school, but once I got here and the reality hit, I had to keep myself from begging my parents to come take me home.

While I think I needed that tough experience in order to grow, I hope that’s not the case for next year’s incoming first-years. This year, I’ve gotten to know a few first-years who have become my rolemodels — diving head-first into all the great organiza-

tions and groups that campus has to offer and achieving some pretty impressive things.

There’s something for everyone here — even me.

One thing I did right my freshman year was joining (and then sticking with) the honors program. Yes, it does entail some challenging classes, but I’ve made some great friends through the program.

Not only that, but being an honors student has some great perks: lunch with the university president, trips to

the opera, an afternoon at the Omaha Zoo. These are the sorts of great adventures that I wouldn’t have had any other way…especially because they are often free.

My second year of college I finally found the guts to get involved with The Volante and our live TV news broadcast, KYOT News. As a double major who spent the first half of my college career getting pre-reqs out of the way, these groups weren’t just gateways to explore my interest in media.

Through these groups I

was able to get to know people within my department that I hadn’t yet been able to meet in classes. By joining these student groups, I found people with similar interests and attitudes toward the things that made me pick this university in the first place.

So take it from Abbott and me: don’t spend your year alone and sad in your dorm room. The adjustment to college life may be a difficult one, but that’s the best reason to take a few chances, get involved and discover you aren’t in this alone.

The ‘true’ college experience What is the true college experience? I’d like to believe it’s about more than just getting a degree, and it’s about more than new buildings or having the latest and greatest technology. It’s about being a part of a community.

The true college experience for a USD student is cheering on the Coyotes in the DakotaDome, walking the halls in Old Main to hear a lecture in Farber Hall, meeting friends for a bite to eat at the MUC or just walking across campus on a beautiful fall day.

Even though the educational experience has changed the way students can get a degree, the campus experience still impacts the way students earn their degree. That will never change. And our priority at USD is to make it the very best experience for all of our students.

It’s a very exciting time to be part of the campus community. New buildings decorate the landscape from The Beacom School of Business to the Wellness Center, providing students with the very best academic tools as well as a place to go to stay in shape or workout with friends.

We hope you will also take time to explore the Sculpture Walk at USD. ABBOTT Six new sculptures, commissioned specifically for USD, were installed last summer at prominent viewing locations across campus. These sculptures join “Legacy,” our own tribute to the spirit of being a Coyote. I hope that you will not only appreciate the look of USD’s campus, but benefit from it as well.

These new buildings join several others in recent years that we’ve renovated or constructed. By adding new labs and classrooms to our science and chemistry buildings, and opening new buildings dedicated to medical and health education, business and student life, we are able to provide our campus community with an environment where students can succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Speaking of success, our women’s basketball team qualified for the 2014 NCAA

Tournament — a first for Coyote Athletics. It verified that USD’s transition to Division I, while not always a smooth ride, was well worth the journey, and we look forward to many successful years in Division I — in all sports.

We will not stand pat in our efforts to help bring the true college experience to all of our students. Renovations on the North Campus begin this spring with ground breaking for a new basketball arena and academic space next to the Dome along with new outdoor sports facilities. Our commitment to Division I athletics symbolizes our effort to make the University of South Dakota a place where students will enjoy what many graduates describe as the best years of their lives.

It’s evident that the educational experience is changing, thanks to the Internet, and while technology is a wonderful thing — an extraordinary teaching and learning tool that brings education to all corners of the world — the true joy of being a college student is found right here on campus.

A guide to choosing your major The perils of Sam Sharpe is a junior majoring in English.

When I was seven years old, I decided I wanted to be a detective. At 10, I thought maybe being a lawyer would be more fun.

By 15, I wanted to be a rock star, and at 17, I wanted to be a music producer.

Now, I’m a junior in college and I’ll be lucky if I make up my mind on law school before I have to take the LSATs.

Choosing a major is hard work.

Granted, some students know what they want to do from the very start. For the most part, these people enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as the STEM fields.

Some of them become doctors.

The rest of us, however, seem to pinball from major to major for the first two or even three years of college before life crystallizes in front of us. This pinballing is how you choose your major.

Take me, for instance.

My first semester of college, I was in a music appreciation class, two philosophy courses and an English course. For a while, I genuinely thought I would be an accounting major. It was only last semester that I fully committed myself to studying English.

A lot of people don’t even figure their majors out by then even.

So don’t worry if those first couple of semesters are a strange mixture of arts, sciences and business.

Don’t be concerned if that pottery class isn’t as interesting as planned.

Take into consideration if a prerequisite business course turns out to be the most fun thing in the world.

The most important part of choosing a major is finding one’s passion.

Much like an Ollivanders Wand or the thug life, your major might just choose you.

Although the University of South Dakota has a rather small campus, it is useful to have a car to get around to the places one would not normally want to walk, like Wal-Mart or the Al Neuharth Media Center.

Unfortunately, only one of these buildings has adequate parking for the number of people who must go there.

While a student still has a parking pass, this isn’t such a big deal. There are a lot of places on campus for ‘A’ parking, and sometimes they actually have spots.

However, as a student’s career requires him or her to go to more and more places on campus, they will quickly find that ‘A’ parking isn’t quite enough anymore.

Unfortunately, this is not one field where it gets better. Instead, when a student inevitably makes the decision to live off-campus, they often choose to go without a parking pass altogether.

Although this choice does save money in the long run, what it does not save is frustration: Parking tickets, while only $15, are enough to ruin anyone’s day.

It’s not the price that’s so annoying — it’s the thought that counts.

So what’s a first-year to do?

First thing’s first: Make sure you get your parking pass as quickly as possible and be sure to hang it up properly.

The University Police will ticket you just for having an “improperly displayed” pass, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Next, drive around the town a little bit. Figure out all the places where you can comfortably park on the street, or perhaps some hidden parking lots that doesn’t get a lot of attention.

If, for some reason, you plan on driving to classes, be sure to leave as early as possible, just in case you have to park a mile away.

Keep a large amount of quarters in your car, as well. There are several places — like the Muenster University Center or the National Music Museum – that have parking meters for half an hour per quarter.

Set an alarm so you don’t get back to your car too late, and don’t do anything too timeconsuming: These meters max out at two hours.

Finally, there are times during the day that the UPD simply doesn’t canvas parking lots looking to fill their ticket quota. For the most part, any time after 5 p.m. is safe for ‘A’ parking and visitor lots.

Generally speaking, at USD, wherever you need parking, you can’t find it, and wherever you can find parking, you won’t need it.

However, if a student can stay smart, he or she will be able to avoid the indignities of a parking ticket and simply get where they need to go.

Michael Geheren: What are some things you want freshmen to do when they come on campus?

Kim Grieve: Find some student organizations that they can become involved in.

Meet their faculty, meet staff, meet new friends, be open to new opportunities.

The most important thing is to make this their home.

This is going to be their community for the next four years and to really establish the relationships they need in order to be successful. Also, to know they are a Coyote for life.

MG: How would you describe your role? In many high schools the dean is a person students go to when they are in trouble. The dean on a collegiate level is different — can you describe that?

KG: I would say I am the student advocate. If there is anything a student needs, they can

come here and let me know. I am not a discipline office, I am the advocacy office.

MG: What were the highlights of your undergraduate life?

KG: I think the highlights for me were getting very involved in campus. I was involved in greek life, student organizations and one of the really valuable experiences I had was work study. I started in the Student Life office at Michigan State my sophomore year. That is really where I developed the love for university life and that is the most important highlight of my undergrad.

MG: What is something USD offers that other schools don’t?

KG: I think what USD offers is a large university experience on a smaller campus. We are large in that we have absolutely everything that a new freshman could want to be apart of, but yet you get to know faculty, staff and other students because we are kind of small at

the same time. Having the new MUC as our community hub has made that even easier.

It has been even more exciting having everybody in the same place.

MG: What are some of the things you will anticipate next year that will be exciting for the incoming freshman?

KG: I think the most exciting thing is the multicultural center.

It will be up and running next year. I think to have a place where there is going to be all people to meet and collaborate and focus on social justice is going to be very important and exciting.

MG: Do you believe this campus is open to free expression and free speech?

KG: I do think this campus allows students to express themselves and we are open to ideas and respectful to all ideas. Even if we don’t agree with them, we want to hear students ideas and we want to respect everyone.

MG: What is one experience you want students to leave with, excluding a diploma?

KG: I want them to leave here being proud of what they have accomplished and being proud to be a USD graduate. I think it is just the warmest place where everybody is so friendly and just goes out of their way.

The students are very respectful and very excited about their futures. That is so fun for me to see.

Michael Geheren: What is your role for the students in one sentence?

James W. Abbott: My role is to make sure the student experience at USD is the best that it can be.

MG: What are some of the highlights of being a student here?

JA: One of the highlights is graduating and getting that first great job or getting accepted to a great grad school or a great professional school. I think one of the the things that is so great about USD is that it is a university town that is really fun. It’s kind of womvy if you will, not roomie, but womvy. W-OM-V-Y. It’s not a word, I don’t think. It’s big enough you don’t know everybody by any means, but you do know somebody and that is nice.

MG: I notice you eat lunch with students sometimes.

JA: I do.

MG: Why do you do that?

JA: I don’t even know, I just like it. I like talking to students. Students are fun — I like to know the students.

MG: I understand you have two dogs, but I have only seen one.

JA: Yes, that is because I don’t care for one of them.

MG: The one you like is McGovern?

JA: McGovern I like a lot.

MG: What is wrong with the other dog?

JA: Well, Oscar is a beagle who barks all the time.

He and I don’t get along. He doesn’t like me either, so it is mutual.

MG: And you flex the pet policy when bringing McGovern through the

MUC? JA: Yeah, I pretend like there isn’t one. I actually don’t know if there is one.

I’m always careful not to take him around food. I just sort of walk through.

I like the exercise, he does too. I like going through the buildings at odd times.

MG: Why did you name him McGovern? Obviously he was named after the late Sen. George McGovern.

JA: We started a tradition one dog ago, naming our dogs after defeated Democratic presidential candidates. We figure we could have a lot of dogs then. The first one was Adlai, after Adlai Stevenson. Now we have McGovern, and I hope he is with us for a long, long time because he is a very sweet dog.

MG: Do you get into social media? I know you don’t have a Twitter account, but there was the Fake Jim Abbott account.

JA: Well, I was kind of thinking of doing a fake,

fake Jim Abbott. Then I decided it would be a lot of work and I would have to keep up with it. I would have to try and be clever.

That’s tough. The guy who did the fake Jim Abbott, he was good.

MG: What do you want students to gain in their time here?

JA: You know, I always say the same thing, and for me it is the definition of the liberal arts education.

I want them to leave here with the ability to express themselves in writing, orally, to think critically and to be able to problem solve. That’s the goal as far as I am concerned. And of course if you have to do let’s say accounting, you have to be able to learn the skills.

Michael Geheren: What is the role of SGA? Dustin Santjer: To address the student concerns. It is for SGA to work with students and with faculty. It is all about the students.

Tyler Tordsen: We are the liaison between the student body and the administration, professors, organizations and the community.

MG: How do students get involved with SGA? TT: Stop by our office, email us. There are our plenty of opportunities to

get involved. Not just with the freshman senate seat, but also one of the biggest things I try to do is get more more non-senators on university committees.

DS: As a freshman you are not just limited to the fall semester — elections are in the spring semester.

MG: What are some things you wish you would have known when you entered USD? TT: What it comes down to is don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask questions. You ask questions, you will find the answers you are looking

for. Also, don’t be afraid to get involved, to challenge yourself or do something totally out of the box.

Everybody here wants you to succeed and have fun.

MG: What are some of the big things that will impact students?

TT: I think the Coyote mentality — we are going to grow on that. We are going to see a lot more red on campus.

DS: Go to as many events as you can. You are going to find something that you really like and that could define who you are at USD.

Malachi Petersen: How long have you worked in here?

Lowell Knutson: Pushing eight years now.

MP: What’s it like working in Al Neuharth?

LK: Well it’s real good.

I farmed for like 100 years and all of the sudden I needed to do something different, so here I am. There’s good climate control and good friendly people.

MP: What does your job entail?

LK: Most people don’t even realize. I clean the floors and the bathrooms and all of that and then you need to dust and polish every inch of the building basically.

Stick in there and get a degree. That piece of paper means a whole lot.

MP: What is your favorite part about your job?

Verm cats, a sleeker design, responsive access and a customizable experience are what the new MyUSD portal is offering students and faculty.

Tena Haraldson, director of Marketing Communications and University Relations, said the portal is built on software that is several years old.

“The idea of the portal is to be a convenience for students and faculty,” Haraldson said. “Students are big users of the portal now, and it is important for them to be able to find things quickly.”

While most students won’t make use of the update until August when they return to school, Haraldson said the new site is set to go live in June.

With the slogan “Same cats. New portal,” Haraldson said USD was trying to take a light-hearted approach while connecting the new portal with something everyone can recognize.

“The Verm cats are our attempt to introduce the new concept,” she said. “When the new email system was released, people forgot about it by fall, so we wanted to do an internal promotion to bring it to the attention of students.”

“Navigation will be simplified and the content that is there will be specific to the uses of the user,” Haraldson said. “Also with the new software, we will be able to use a simple design with a white background accented with red.

Sophomore Lauryn Eggen said she has mixed feelings when it’s come her use of the current portal.

“It’s easy when you know what you’re looking for, but it’s really frustrating to try and find things like faculty phone numbers or other things that you need to search for,” she said.

Eggen is anticipating the easier access and customization of the new portal.

“It will be much eas-

ier to access the things that each individual person uses on a regular basis,” she said. “It would be awesome to have the things I use the most front and center and since I’ll be starting nursing school I’ll have the things I need for those classes right there instead of having to try and find them.”

Haraldson said she expects the portal to be ongoing process.

“It’s never really finished, but our primary concern is usability and usefulness,” she said.

“We hope students realize when they first go to it, it is going to look different but it will still be useful to them and it will be where all their work happens.”

To wear or not to wear: first-year fashion files Josie FLATGARD is a first-year majoring in contemporary media and journalism.

Starting off at college, it may be a mystery as to what to wear and what not to wear for some people. By following these tips, it is my hope that the University of South Dakota will have the best dressed campus.

First off, here is a general rule: Son’t wear your lanyard around your neck since it screams, ‘Freshman!’ to other students. If possible, find a cute lanyard, and even that is not always necessary. You can easily clip your keys and stick your student ID into a cute wristlet.

Also: It’s time to retire those high school T-shirts.

Sure, it’s OK to wear them to exercise at the Wellness Center, but anywhere else?

Leave ‘em behind.

Show school spirit by participating in ‘wear red Fridays.’ Any red USD wear will do — from the firstyear T-shirt you receive on welcome weekend to one you could buy at the bookstore or elsewhere.

Many of us come from small towns where there was a pretty uniform style everyone wore because it was expected and accepted. When someone stepped out of the box for a day, everyone noticed. It is the time to have fun and experiment with style.

Try out new trends, skim a few magazines, get inspiration from anywhere you look. However you do it, step out of your fashion comfort zone and see what else is out there to wear.

As for every day style, I would recommend not wearing sweatpants to class each morning. What you wear at college helps de-

fine who you are, whether you’d like to admit it or not.

It also sends a message to the professors and advisers: how serious you are about school and earning a degree.

Plus, if you look good, you feel good. It’s that simple.

Make sure you maximize closet space and stay stocked up on the season’s essentials. Don’t forget warm-weather clothes like shorts, tanks and sandals for the beginning of the year.

College dating: The choice is yours Choosing the right person should be a thoughtful decision Cristina Drey is a junior majoring in contemporary media and journalism

Being a single, focused student, I am quite content in saying that I’m not in college to get my MRS degree — finding a husband while you’re in school.

Despite a few flings here and there, I have not been in a serious, steady relationship since high school.

Now you may be thinking, ‘Why is she writing a dating column, then?’

I don’t classify myself as a love expert, but I’m no stranger to the topic either.

I’m not in a relationship because I haven’t found the right person yet. Being in a relationship absolutely does not stamp a futuristic wedding ring on your left hand. Dating may possibly be the only way to find out exactly what it is you’re looking for, and with the right person can be very fulfilling.

There’s nothing greater than having someone you care about right beside you, especially during the stressful college years. On the other hand, dating and the wonderful qualities that come along with it should not be used to

merely pass the time.

As anyone could say, I’ve had my fair amount of bruises and scars from being involved with a guy.

What I’ve come to realize from those bumps is it’s something I could have prevented. It’s all about quality, not quantity.

My advice to you is to be picky. Don’t fall all over the guy who tells you you’re beautiful, or the girl who showers you with close attention at a party. Devote your time to the person who treats you with respect. It’s fun to be young and crazy, but that often leads to disaster and hurt.

College has been labeled by many as the greatest years of a person’s life. The time presents many opportunities and challenges which mold a teenager into an adult. Take full advantage of everything the time has to offer, but don’t lose track of who you are.

There are many great people here at the University of South Dakota.

Introduce yourself to anyone and everyone — they could turn out to be your best friend, maybe even more. But in the process, don’t sell yourself short. A relationship based on fun will end with anything but.

Meander your way around to find someone worthwhile, but don’t take a break for only a few nice words. Wait for the one who causes your feet to forget how to keep walking.

College can be the best time of a person's life. It's a place where new, longlasting relationships can be born and opportunities await around every corner.

Among the many things that can occur in the first weeks or months, dating in college is one of the most inevitable.

There are two ways to approach the daunting and admittedly confusing realm of college dating, and it all depends on what the person is looking for.

As someone who arrived at the University of South of South Dakota in both a long-term and long-distance relationship, short-term college dating isn't exactly my expertise. However,

something I can vouch for and defend is the importance of having that significant other by your side during one's college years.

For those of you either interested or currently in a long-term relationship, there are some things you should know and consider before jumping into a serious relationship in college.

Before any of that can be dolled out, you need to understand what it is your looking for in a relationship before committing to somebody or the idea of somebody.

You need to be certain an actual relationship is something you'd like to see yourself in during college.

Taking classes, making new friends, joining clubs, partaking in extracurricular activities, all while trying to maintain some level of basic hygiene and level-headedness is not always easy.

For some personalities and attitudes, throwing in a boyfriend and girlfriend can both aggra-

vate and complicate a relationship and your educational well-being.

One thing that can make all of that irrelevant is the person you are with. When it's the right person and you are the right person for them, balancing and getting through all the rough parts of college don't seem so rough.

The first and most important piece of advice I can give to someone looking or in a long-term relationship in college is — make sure they are the right one. I don't have to tell you what that means, you'll know if he or she is someone who fulfills and challenges you.

Not to say the relationship is a cakewalk, all those things that make college challenging don't go away and they can't be ignored. However, there is a way to guide yourself and the relationship through these things to ensure both parties are holding their end of the bargain.

It can be easy to slip in the "me" zone in col-

lege, but if that person truly is as important to you as you hold stock in, stepping out of your "me" bubble is the most important thing to remember. While it isn't always easy to remember, it should be easy to do.

Instead of studying or doing homework, make sure he or she is always there with you. Personal space when preparing for tests and papers is important, and they will understand that. Just be sure to make sure they are wanted in those downtimes.

It's all-too-easy to slip into the doldrums of classes and campus life, but be sure to remain spontaneous. Make a dull Tuesday night date night.

I could ramble on all day about what to do and not do in a long-term college relationship, but that's not what this is all about. Every relationship is different, and each person's needs differ from mine and the millions of other college couples.

Car maintenance: how to jump a car Andy Schultze

Jump a car At some point, almost everyone has walked out to their vehicle to leave, and tried to start it, and got nothing. This is often a sign that the battery is dead. This can happen if a light gets left on, headlights get left on, door doesn’t get closed all the way, etc.

As long as the battery isn’t dead from old age, or damaged, you are in luck.

1. First, you will need to find someone that is willing to help you out.

Have them pull their vehicle with the front end of both vehicles close together so that the jumper cables will reach both batteries.

2. Open the hood on each vehicle and locate the batteries in. Turn off both vehicles, including electronics, such as radio, and headlights. Make sure both vehicles are in park, or neutral (if a manual transmission), and both emergency brakes are set.

3. Make sure the jumper cables, wires and clamps are in good shape, After inspection, be sure the jumper cables are not tangled up, nor are touching eachother on either end.

4. Use the red clamp on the jumper cables and connect it to the positive (red) post on the dead vehicle’s battery. Next, clamp the other end of the red jumper cable

to the positive battery post on the booster vehicle. Be sure that the clamp bites onto the battery post well and isn’t going to fall off.

The positive side of the battery is usually labeled with a “+” sign.

5. Connect the negative (black) clamp on the jumper cables to the negative (black) post on the battery of the dead vehicle. After, do the same on the booster vehicle. The negative post on a battery is usually black and labeled with a “-“ sign.

6. After connecting the jumper cables, start the booster vehicle. Then, proceed to start the dead vehicle. If the battery does not start right away, let it sit for a few minutes and allow power to build between the two batteries.

7. Once the dead vehicle has been started, let them both idle for a few minutes to be sure enough power has transferred to the dead vehicles battery to stay running.

If the dead vehicle does not start after being connected to the booster vehicle for more than a few minutes, it is likely there is another issue preventing it from starting.

After both vehicles have been running for a few minutes, remove the jumper cables, making sure to not let any of the clamps touch each other, until it has been removed from

both batteries. Be sure to get the car to a safe parking spot before turning it off, as it is still possible that the battery could need to be replaced depending on its condition. You may also still need to have the battery charged by a mechanic or service station if you encounter this issue again in the near future.

Change the oil When it is time to check you vehicle’s engine oil, start by parking the vehicle on a flat surface. Also, you may want to be sure that it has not been driven recently, because a hot engine, means hot oil, and burn you if hot oil touches your skin.

1. Open your vehicle’s hood, and find the oil dipstick. It is usually labeled “oil” or similar, and is shaped like a circle.

2. After you have located the dipstick, pull it out of the tube, and with a rag, wipe it off.

3. Next insert the dipstick back into the tube it was removed from, and pull it out again. This time do not wipe it right away. Instead, inspect how far up on the dipstick the oil reaches. On every vehicle, there is some way of indicating the proper oil level, whether it be two pinholes, the letters L and H (low and high), or just a cross hatch pattern.

Often you may have to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual if you are unable to tell which is the appropriate full line or indicator. Generally, if the top of the oil streak on the

Tips to survive How to do laundry in the dorms Washing Cycle your first year malachi petersen is a first-year majoring in journalism and political science.

You made it to college.

You are now entering one of the defining moments of your life. The path you choose and the things you do for the next four or more years will have a tremendous impact on the rest of your life. No pressure.

As a student just finishing up my first year at the University of South Dakota, I’m going to offer you some bits of advice on how to survive your first year of college.

You should keep in mind that everyone’s experiences their first year are different and no one’s experience will be exactly the same.

1. Go to class. There is nothing more important than rolling out of bed in the morning and walking across campus to go learn. You may not like the subject matter, but just by being in class you will be able to absorb some of the information and will hopefully be able to do well on assignments. Just remember, you or your parents are paying thousands of dollars for you to go to school here, and each class hour is money out of your pocket. Any classes you skip or miss are just a waste of your or your parents’ money.

2. Take notes. Going to class isn’t everything.

While you are in class you

will have to take notes to help you study for quizes and tests. You may think you will remember everything from a lecture, but trust me, you won’t.

3. Read the book. College textbooks can cost hundreds of dollars. It would be a shame if that money went to waste while your textbooks collect dust. Make sure to take an hour or more each night to read the assigned chapters. If you’re in a rush and don’t have the time then make sure to at least read the first three pages of the chapter. I’ve found that professors usually get most of their quiz questions from these pages.

4. Get involved. It may be tempting to stay in your room and binge watch Netflix, but it is critical that you get out and make friends. Many organizations on campus appeal to just about every interest imaginable and can help you find people with similar interests.

Among the things you can get involved in are intramural sports, Greek life, Student Government, the student news media and many more. A complete list of campus organizations can be found on the My U Portal page under the campus life tab titled “Get Involved.”

5. Have fun. Go on a walk around the block, go to McDonalds at 2 a.m., go to a theater production, hang out with your new friends — do something to relax.

- 1 Pillsbury Crescents Seamless Dough Sheet - Caramel Candies, one per each Doodle.

- 1 cup of cinnamon/sugar, blended to taste

Directions

1. Cut out about a two-bytwo piece of dough and wrap it gently and snuggled around one caramel.

2. Roll it in the cinnamonsugar mixture.

3. Place them onto a baking sheet about one or so apart.

4. Bake them at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes, or until they’re firm and slightly puffy.

5. Let them cool for just a few, but these have to be eaten warm, for maximum caramel flow.

Slaw: 1 package slaw mix 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced 2 ears corn, grilled and husked 2 6-oz. containers non-fat Greek yogurt 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp chile powder 2 limes, zest and juice 1/2 small container chiles in adobo sauce, blended

Fish: 4 tilapia fillets 3 1/2 tsp chipotle chile powder 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp freshly ground pepper 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 lime, juiced Cheddar cheese, shredded Homemade Guacamole Corn tortillas, toasted

In a large bowl, add slaw mix. Thinly slice half a red onion and add to slaw. In a food processor or blender, add half a container of chiles in adobo sauce- about 4-5 chiles, and blend. In a bowl, add greek yogurt, old bay seasoning, cumin, chile powder, lime zest and juice and blended adobo chiles.

Mix together and set aside.

Turn grill or grill pan on high heat. Add corn. Cook for 10 minutes, frequently

turning it, until kernels become browned. Set aside to cool. Once corn is cooled, cut kernels off cob using a knife and add to slaw. Add preferred amount of greek yogurt dressing to slaw mix.

Cover with saran wrap and chill. I usually make this a couple of hours before so the flavors can really marry together.

Tacos: In a small bowl, combine chipotle chile powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion

powder, salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil and lime juice. Mix together to create a paste. Take tilapia and brush half the paste on one side of each tilapia. Take a long piece of aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Place pastesided tilapia face down on aluminum foil. Take rest of paste and spread on tilapia.

Turn grill on high heat.

Place fish (on aluminum foil) on grill. Cook for seven minutes. Flip tilapia, and

cook for another seven minutes. Fish may break apart in large chunks. Once cooked, take fish off of aluminum foil and place on plate. Using two forks, shred fish. Before assembling the taco, take a corn tortilla and grill tortilla on both sides on stove top. To assemble taco, smear homemade guacamole on top of tortilla.

Sprinkle preferred amount of cheddar cheese. Top with shredded fish and preferred amount of slaw.

Keep some spare dish soap ready and wash up.

If you are like most other college students, you are poorer than dirt. Try to keep dishes down to five ingredients or less. Be creative about substituting ingredients with stuff from campus dining.

Use your microwave, a lot.

First, learn how to use your microwave. People get weird when you cook on the stove and they smell your meal for days. Be kind — use the stove sparingly and find some microwavable desserts in a mug.

Don’t gross out your roommate.

Say you like tuna sandwiches, but your roommate gags everytime they smell the dish. Don’t give up your favorite foods, but also respect the fact that you have to share a room with this person all year.

Eating healthy food is possible.

Everyone will talk about the freshman 15, and it gets annoying. So, prove them all wrong and eat like a champion. There is more than one option to get the veggies and fruits you need to maintain a healthy diet.

Wellness Center offers students exercise, somewhere to socialize Kelsey Kroger

The University of South Dakota Wellness Center is a great way for students to stay active and healthy during their time at USD. The Wellness Center has more than just equipment to work with, featuring classes, the track, athletic courts and a rock climbing wall just to name a few.

Director of the Wellness Center Steve Mayer said the Wellness Center is also a great place to socialize and have a multitude of different things to do.

“It is a nice relaxed environment to get away

people on a regular basis, so meeting at the Wellness Center is a great opportunity,” Mayer said.

Along with meeting friends, Wellness Center front desk worker Amy Goodrich said it is a place to meet people.

“It is almost as if it is building a community, there are so many people that I know just from

the Wellness Center and then I see them out and about,” Goodrich said.

The Wellness Center offers a variety of different classes including, but not limited to Yoga, Zumba, Les Mills Body Pump and Mat Pilates.

Goodrich also said it is nice to have the fitness classes included in the membership.

“I know a lot of universities charge extra for the fitness classes they offer, so having it included in the membership is a nice feature,” Goodrich said.

Get Active with Campus Politics The University of South Dakota currently offers two organizations allowing students to become politically active: the College Democrats and the College Republicans.

South Dakota’s election on Nov. 4 will include bids for United States Senate, House of Represenatives, Govenor and local seats.

"Eighteen to 24 year olds make up close to 20 percent of the voting age population, and they have the lowest turnout by far," said Rachelle Norberg, a member of College Democrats.

Norberg believes it is important for students to voice their opinion with their vote.

"For as big of population as college students make up, they are very underrepresented in the issues and in the people they send off, simply because they don't vote," Norberg said.

Register to vote There are three different types of voting students.

If the student is a permanent resident of Clay County, they will not need to reregister.

If a student is from another county in South Dakota, students have

the option to vote in their home county or Clay County. If students decide to vote in Clay County, they need to fill out a voter registration form at the Clay County auditors to request the change.

If a student is from another state, students can either vote in their home state or South Dakota. Students who want to vote in South Dakota’s election can fill out the voter registration form.

“We always want to see students come out and vote,” said Carri Crum, Clay County auditor. “It is completely up to them whether they stay registered at home or here.”

University of South Dakota College Democrats, Republicans and the Political Science League will host a voter registration drive in the Muenster University Center Wednesday and Thursday during lunchtime.

To not have that issue arise, the three organizations combine before elections to encourage students to register to vote.

Absentee voting has started for the June primaries. Crum said voters can come into the Auditor’s office between 8 a.m.

“Any time students can get out there to vote, that’s great,” Crum said.

Preview to November Voters in the general election this fall will choose a U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative and governor.

Also on the ballot across

the state will be Initiated Measure 18 to raise South Dakota’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour with increases as the cost of living goes up.

“Year after year the state and federal minimum wage levels stall in front of special interest opposition,” Zach Crago, executive director of the South Dakota Democratic Party, said.

“We have got minimum wage on our ballot in South Dakota this fall. I think that’s a perfect way to handle this — let the people decide,” said U.S. Representative Kristi Noem in an interview with MSNBC.

Despite being nearly 10 weeks away from his next practice under center, quarterback Kevin Earl is already excited about the improvement fans are going to see in the 2014 version of the Coyote offense.

Whether it’s from the eight starts under his belt from last year or the four touchdowns he threw during the Spring Game, Earl said the offense is gaining more and more confidence in what they can do.

“First off, it’s night and day for me from where I was last year,” Earl said. “I feel like I’m settling in and taking control of the offense.”

Besides himself, Earl said it was evident the skill of the position players and offensive lineman has improved.

“The offensive line is a group that will really show a lot of improvement next year,” Earl said. “I’ve just gotten way more comfortable with them and we’re returning lots of key guys.”

Starting running back Trevor Bouma said there is a lot of potential for the offense.

“Everyone has more experience this year, and when we get the running game going it just opens up the playbook to hit (Riley) Donovan and the receivers for long gains,” he said.

One of the biggest question marks for the

team lies on the other side of the ball. The defense will have to manage playing without the school’s leading sack artist in team history, Tyler Starr.

Head coach Joe Glenn said it’s a challenge the defense will try its best to conquer.

“I’ve been coaching for a long time, and he’s a player you can’t just say we can replace,” Glenn said. “We have lots of guys at linebacker that can make plays.

(Auston) Johnson is our bell cow and (Keyen) Lage has made plays his whole career here.”

It’s still a long way until the Aug. 30th season opener at Oregon, and Glenn said the team still has a ton of work to do before they

can even think about Oregon.

“Offense, defense, special teams, you name it. They all need to get a lot better still,” Glenn said. “In this industry, you have to take it a day at a time, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

The team improved from one win in 2012 to four wins last year.

Three of their eight losses were by less than a touchdown. That gives Glenn confidence that they are closer than people might expect.

“Once we learn how to finish off games we’ll be able to hit the ground running,” Glenn said.

Grant Bosiacki: Overall, this past year can be described as what?

David Herbster: It’s gone very well. We’ve had increased involvement with our fans and our community, and that’s a trend that will continue.

GB: Is there anything about your job that has surprised you?

DH: Every once in awhile you get shocked by things, but for the most part, no.

If anything, I have been pleasantly surprised by certain things.

GB: When did you know you wanted to be an athletic director?

DH: It was back in college. At that point I had a relationship with my athletic director (at Virginia Tech), and in graduate school I saw everything he was doing to make athletics possible for the athletes.

GB: What excites you about the future at USD? DH: Winning. Seeing all the work we do in putting together an event or whatever it is, just to see that culminate into wins and championships and graduation is what excites me.

GB: This past March the women’s basketball team made it to the NCAA Tournament. How big was that for the school?

DH: It really gave this school some confidence.

It gave us a sense that we do belong in D-I athletics. We all felt a sense of accomplishment, achievement and an awful lot of pride.

GB: What are your impressions with how Joe Glenn has lead this football team throughout the last two years?

DH: He has definitely changed the culture of football around here. The values that he has instilled in his team are lifelong values that will benefit them for many years.

GB: Are first-years who are coming here next year picking the perfect time to become Coyotes?

DH: I think so. The next crew that is coming in will be coming in during the next wave of growth on this campus. This next wave will get everything up-to-date and will have the benefit of being a part of opening up a new building, which will be the basketball arena in 2016.

Whether it’s the business school building, the union, the expansion of the MUC or a basketball arena, it’s just cool to be apart of the first of something.

GB: They’re especially coming in at the right time when we beat the Jackrabbits in football next year, right?

DH: Amen to that.

After a successful year of athletics for the University of South Dakota, the university’s goal for the 201415 school year is to continue growing the student fan base after making strides this past year.

also brought back to life this year. The goal of the Coyote Crazies is to “improve student engagement in Coyote athletics and overall school pride by building a committed, educated student fan base and a game day atmosphere built for students by the students,” according to the group’s website.

Junior Rachelle Norberg, vice president of the Coyote Crazies, said this year was a learning experience for the group.

“We had no idea what were doing, but we had a really successful year,” she said. “We were able to reach out to a lot of students and retain the students who do go to every game. We were able to use some of the benefits that the university gave us, and we compiled a 1,000-student contact sheet, which is almost one-quarter of campus that we can reach with just an email.”

Student Life Lindsay Sparks, director of transitions and student programming, said there were more than 12,000 student ID swipes at athletic events, a number the university is happy with.

“We’re trying to give students more freedom to be wild and crazy yet still respectful at games,” Sparks said. “We’re happy they’re having more fun in the crowd.”

In addition to giving students more freedom at the games, there has also been an increase in freedom during tailgating.

“We saw a big growth in Athletics tailgating this year,” Sparks Neal Bendesky, said. “Our goal is to provide a coordinator for athletic more entertaining, Division marketing and promotions, I atmosphere.” said in a previous interview with The Volante, the goal is to draw more students to the Students games to bring the Division I The Coyote Crazies atmosphere to the Dome. student organization was “A big key to finding

Sparks said there was a big response to the spring football game contest, which was a trip to Oregon for USD’s football game against the Ducks this fall.

The women’s basketball team’s Summit League Championship and trip to the NCAA tournament will likely factor into game attendance growth next year, Sparks said.

“There’s no secret — if you win, people come,” she said. “People want to watch fun, winning games. It’s fun to watch success and be a part of that success, so I definitely think we’re going to see an increase in numbers as our programs grow. Even sports like track and field, cross country and tennis have had huge success this year and that’s awesome for the university.”

Sparks said she’s excited for everything the Coyote Crazies have planned for next year as they take their organization to the next level.

Norberg said the Coyote Crazies have their base plan for what they want to accomplish next year

already in place.

“We’re working on T-shirts and looking at sponsorship opportunities in the community,” she said.

“Next year there will be a $15 fee to join, but that will give you a T-shirt, a Coyote Crazies card with community bonuses and early ticket pickup.”

With a year under their belts, Norberg said the group will focus more on recruiting next year.

“We’re a lot more organized and we know what to expect,” she said. “We’ve found a balance of what we can do, so next year we’ll focus on recruiting and getting more involved on campus.”

Norberg said students should join Coyote Crazies because the benefits are two-fold.

“First, you get priority pickup, you get into the Dome before everyone else and you get other membership perks,” she said. “You’re also saying you’re invested in USD, our athletes and promoting Coyote athletics. You’re saying you’re proud to be a Coyote.”

Football coach Joe Glenn: Thoughts on the University of South Dakota JOE GLENN is USD’s head football coach.

I, Joe Glenn, came to USD in 1967 to be a student/ athlete. The following are thoughts that came to me when I was asked, 47 years later, to make some notes on what is special about being a USD Coyote. All these traits are lifelong!

Sports still an option for non-athletes Wellness Center provides 19 intramural opportunities throughout year Cristina Drey

Any sport from basketball to bowling to trap shooting is available to all students, faculty, staff or spouses at the University of South Dakota as an intramural sport.

The Wellness Center offers 19 different sports, and anyone at USD is able to form a team and compete.

Junior Joshua Haaland works as an intramural referee at the Wellness Center, a job he took in his sophomore year.

“I took the job because I am really into sports and love the feeling of being able to understand them from both the player and official stand point,” Haaland said.

INTRAMURAL OPPORTUNITIES The USD Wellness Center provides fall and spring leagues along with tournaments and day events for 19 different sports.

Intramural sports, Haaland said, give students the chance to be healthy while also using their competitive drive to have fun.

“I believe it is important to unlock that competitive aspect of each individuals personality because it can be used not just in sports, but also in everyday life,” he said.

Additionally, Haaland has found his connection with the intramural sports to be a good way to meet new people.

“I know since I joined the intramural staff, I have met so many new people of both genders and it has allowed me to grow greatly in my ability to communicate with others,” Haaland said. “Intramurals are just kind of that random event that whether a participant is good or not, can have great, positive effects in so many different ways.”

Sophomore Lindsey Herbet was on a volleyball intramural team in the fall of 2013 and also a basketball team her freshman year. Herbert echoed Haaland in that being involved in teams for the intramural sports is a good way to get to know others and a fun way to stay active.

“I played sports in high school and wasn’t going to play in college, so I thought it would be a good idea to keep myself involved in sports, because I love playing them,” Herbet said.

to take their mind off of school and have fun, Herbert added.

“It’s kind of a stress reliever when you’re really busy with tests and whatnot,” she said.

Sophomore Maggie Loudenslager has participated in intramural basketball, flag football, softball and basketball over the past two years.

Loudenslager said the opportunity to participate in intramural sports is a great asset to the university.

“Not only do they provide students with a way

to meet other students, but the physiological and psychological effects of exercise are proven to improve quality of life, and intramurals is just another fun opportunity to get exercise in,” Loudenslager said.

In the spring of 2013, Loudenslager and her team ended the season with an interesting twist.

“Last year our co-ed softball team went undefeated throughout the season,” Loudenslager said. “When it cam time for the championship game we were all psyched

up and we just kept saying ‘Do it for the T-shirt, do it for the T-shirt.’”

In the week prior to the championship game, Loudenslager and her team couldn’t stop talking about the T-shirt they’d receive if they won the game.

“So we get in the game and we pull off an awesome come-from-behind win, and we were all so excited to finally get our T-shirts. And what does the umpire hand us?

Water bottles,” Loudenslager said. “Apparently the T-shirts are

only for the winners of the competitive league, so those T-shirts we had been fawning over never happened. It would have been really sad if it wasn’t so funny.”

The best part of being on a team for Loudenslager is the relationship with teammates that comes from the season.

“You really get to know people when you are playing sports with them, and their competitive sides come out,” Loudenslager said.

Once referred to as South Dakota Day at the University of South Dakota when it began Nov. 20, 1914, the tradition of Dakota Days is fast approaching its 100th year in Vermillion.

The homecoming week is scheduled for Oct. 5-11.

Planning is centered on events that focus on past students as much current ones, said Kate Turner, Dakota Days external overall chair.

“A lot of the dignitaries and alumni are coming back, and we want to make sure they know how appreciative (students) are,” she said. “We want, as a student board, to make sure we include (alumni) as much as we can.”

A D-Days theme is selected, but will not be released until later this week, Turner said. One aspect of the week that is becoming apparent is the amount of collaboration between organizations to put on events.

Student organizations like the Campus Activities Board, Dakotathon and Students Enhancing Resources for Vermillion Enrichment are all planning events with the student-led Dakota Days board. With a budget of more than $12,000, Turner said any added help in deferring costs is welcomed by the board.

One of the more noticeable changes to D-Days will be Thursday’s Vermtown Bash, Turner said.

The board is looking to encourage more community involvement, which will mean changing its location and activities.

The event is typically held in Prentice Park, but Turner said the board has plans to close a part of Main Street to host the Bash.

They also plan to coordinate hours that will be used for more family-friendly activities, while later hours will play host to a battle of the bands-style event and a beer garden.

Another special event marking the 100-year anni-

versary is a planned photo Oct. 10 in front of Old Main.

The board is working with the Alumni Association to recreate a photo of former and current students, along with members of the campus community, to mark the occasion in the university’s history. The Alumni Association and USD Foundation are also coordinating other events with the board to avoid conflicting activities throughout the week.

The Friday pep rally, Turner said, will also look to incorporate more alumni.

She said the student board is working to coordinate more mixed-generation events.

The biggest challenge for the students will be planning for a large turnout Friday and Saturday, Turner said.

“Probably the most pressure is that Vermillion is going to be packed,” she said. “We want to make sure that everything we plan for, we plan for a large quantity of people.”

All of this planning and

coordinating the events falls on the shoulders of a student board that consists of 22 members, ranging from first-years to fifth-year seniors.This group works under the guidance of Student Services.

“Onward” campaign While the “Onward” campaign to raise $250 million for the university was launched Jan. 1, 2012, this year’s D-Days will mark the transition to the public phase of the fundraiser, said Steve Brown, USD Foundation president.

The campaign raised about $105 million so far, and Brown said they need to continue to raise about $400,000 a month to stay on target. The goal of the Foundation is to raise at least $1 more than USD’s nine-year Campaign South Dakota — which brought in $134 million.

The “capstone event” for the campaign during D-Days will be the Red Tie Launch Event Oct. 10 in the Muenster University Center,

Brown said. Save-the-dates have already been sent out to donors, and the night will include drinks, food and guest entertainment.

One special guest entertainer for the night will be alumnus Cody Strand, who has starred in number of productions like the Broadway musical, “The Book of Mormon.” Brown said he will be acting as a kind of emcee for the event, and will also be working with students throughout the week.

The Red Tie Launch will also consist of a 45-minute program “celebrating the university and the campaign,” Brown said.

The reason for the “Red Tie” motto is a result of conversations had within the “Onward” campaign about the kind of tone to be set that night, said Michelle Green, director of Marketing and Strategic Communications for the campaign.

“It speaks to USD’s unapologetic pride. What is more USD than red everywhere?” she said.

"That’s a hard one, gosh. I guess more stuff to do if you are under 21, because that’s a pain.

There are many healthy alternatives to drinking that can be done individually or in a group on the weekends in college, and especially during Dakota Days.

Dakota Days is the homecoming, or spirit week, of the University of South Dakota. D-Days is a big week and a bigger weekend for binge drinking, which causes severe liver damage and other injuries. Alternatives to drinking include: 1. Ping Pong 2. Pool 3. Netflix 4. Go out to eat 5. Walk or ride a bike through Prentis Park

Sophomore Ashley McKeown is on the Dakota Days committee and helps plan the activities. She joined the committee because of her interest in activities on campus.

These activities include general events during the week, funding for these events and the D-Days royalty.

As a community adviser she has taken an interest in making sure

her residents are safe and having healthy fun in the residence halls and around campus by keeping them involved in the committee activities she helps put on.

McKeown is involved in other organizations on campus such as AWOL and Habitat for Humanity to work on service projects.

McKewon said she likes to do service projects because of her interest in helping others.

“I am interested in what is going on

campus, and this was a great opportunity. I like to help and have fun.”

Junior Deborah Mika said there are multiple ways for students to get involved during D-Days.

“The parade is a good activity for students to get into school spirit, tailgating has the inflatables, bean bag tosses and lots of food. There are also other simple games for students to play.”

Mika is involved in some groups on campus like Coyote Crazies and

said she has an interest in the group because it is fun.

The floats and walking participants always have fun, Mika said.

“The pep rally and band music are always fun because you can go with friends and play games like ultimate frisbee or football, which was more appropriate to the seasonal spirit week.”

Both students are encouraged by a healthy lifestyle to not drink during D-Days.

Making dorm space your own necessary for comfort Josie FLATGARD is a first-year majoring in contemporary media and journalism.

Get ready. That small 10’7” by 15’4” room in North Complex is your home for the next nine months. If you are placed in Coyote Village, count your blessings, as you have more space to decorate and make the space your own.

Believe it or not, that little room can be completely transformed with some décor brought from home or bought on the cheap.

Avoid those things from Walmart in the college section, if possible. Don’t get me wrong, some of that stuff can be nice, but ask

yourself if you want to walk down the hall and into a room, only to find the same old thing as in your room, in theirs.

Make the most of your space.

To be honest, I was not sure how much space I would have available to work with, though I tried to plan out what would go where before I arrived to move in.

I like to keep things organized and for everything to have its own place, and there is room to do that.

There are ways to make that small rectangle of a room feel a little more like home than when it does when first arriving.

Some people choose to install carpet. I was used to cold, hardwood floors so just a few rugs worked for me.

If you’re like me, you don’t like to look at various bottles of hair products and/or

toiletries every time you sit down to study or look in the mirror. I prefer to use them and put them away so there is room for other prettier things.

Bring photo frames of family or best friends or pets that can be hung up or placed on the shelves, along with other trinkets to remind you of home or make the space your own and not just another college student’s.

The bookshelves can be used to store book and textbooks, but there is also a huge drawer with a great deal of concealed space for you to claim in between the two desks.

Be prepared as the regular drawer is deep and can house an endless array of sticky notes, a stapler and plenty of highlighters — I used a silverware basket to store pens, pencils, markers and such in an organized but simple way.

organized the closet can be. For some simple ideas, I had a hanging clothes organizer on the side with the three drawers.

A plastic container to house socks and such fit along the side of the organizer.

An easy-to-build shoe organizer could hold 12 pairs of shoes, or more if able to double up with flats or sandals. It fit perfectly horizontally along with a cloth hamper and my toiletry tote, while also serving as another shelf.

Don’t forget about the little details, because those can be a small factor in how life on campus plays out.

Simply make the space your own, and in my opinion, organized.

You’ve just walked into your new room where you’ll be living for the next nine months, and there in the corner is a new face. As you both begin to exchange courtesies, there’s only one question on your mind — are they a friend or a foe?

Meeting your first college roommate — or roommates — for the first time is a monumentous moment in your college career. Chances are you haven’t met this person before, so making a good first impression and putting forth the effort to establish a connection with him or her is important.

The first year of college is full of firsts: classes, college parties, feeling true homesickness — you’ll experi-

ence it all plus more, and rest assured most of you will experience all this alongside your roommate.

With more than 7,000 students spread across campus it doesn’t take much to feel helplessly alone, but your roommate is the one person you can usually count on to fill the void of loneliness.

They’ll be the person during the first few weeks of class you can count on to grab a bite to eat with, the person you rant to at night about how ridiculous lecture was that day, the person you walk around with from house to house gauging the party scene and the person you may ultimately forge a life-long friendship with.

Of course, some people are just not compatible to live together. When I first moved into North Complex two years ago, I was one of the lucky ones. My roommate became one of my best friends. And while I wish I could tell you this is how your roommate experience will pan out, nothing is for

certain.

If you were to ask me if I ever envisioned one of my roommates urinating all over my personal belongings, I would have called you crazy, but unfortunately for me, it happened.

Offering you the best advice I can, if after two weeks or so upon moving in you still can’t figure out how you’ll manage to live with your roommate, you need to find someone else to live with. Just like in the dating world, there are plenty of fish in the sea you could be sharing a room with, so make sure it’s the right one.

Requesting a new roommate is not difficult, nor should it be considered shameful. At the end of the day, this is your college experience, and much of how it turns out is up to you.

Previewing to August, when you arrive for move-in day and open the door to your room for the first time, you’re going to come across a new face. It’s up to you — is that person going to be a friend or a foe?

By establishing a plan for sleep, study and social times, it will be beneficial in having a successful year at college.

Roommate agreements will be provided by the community adviser in the dorms to sign. This will be done after discussing what things are on and off limits, and therefore outlines the lives of the roommates so they can better understand each other. That way, both roommates are on the same level.

However, there are some basic, unwritten, common sense rules to go by regarding a roommate.

Respect your roommate’s things. If it’s on their side, don’t touch it. Leave it alone unless they told you it’s OK to borrow things. There may be boundaries or areas where it is really not OK for them to cross.

Find out what they are.

Be considerate. If you walk into the room and find your roommate sleeping, try your best not to be loud. If you have to do something in the room, do it quietly.

College days can be hard, and sometimes 20 minutes is all a person has to spare to get away from that stress and those worries. It can be the perfect amount of time for a quick nap before embarking on that 10-page paper.

Be prepared. The person you are assigned to — or choose to live with — will be a pretty big part of college life. You sleep in the same room as this person, get ready in the same room as this person, eat and study there, too. That

all adds up to a whole lot of time.

Then again, you can choose how often to see that person or how much you want to interact with him or her.

It should be worked out when guests can come over and for how long they stay. This may lead to building friendships with the ‘I met him/her through him/her’ connection. The ones you meet in college will most likely be the friends you have for life.

Make sure to tell your roommate about any weird habits you have. Let him or her know what to expect with your lifestyle or how you plan to live your first year of college.

Having a roommate can either go very well and end in a lasting friendship, or it can go the opposite way.

Hopefully this helps clear some things up and will set a good foundation for a fantastic year.

While it may not seem like much, your dorm room is going to be your home for the next nine months.

Decorate the area the way you like. It’s perfectly normal to have a personality.

2. Understand that compromise is OK

Living with more than 50 people on one floor is going to cause problems, and this is alright. Yes, there is going to be times when it’s way too loud to sleep or study and you may not like your neighbors, but you’ll never again experience anything like dorm life.

3. Strive to be healthy 5. Have some initiative Instead of spending your flex on fast food so often, utilize the Beede Bump to stock up on basic groceries to make easy and healthy meals in your community kitchen.

This is also an excellent way to socialize with people on your floor.

4. It pays to wake up

earlier in the morning

We’ll be the first to warn you, the dorm showers in North Complex are terrible. Unless you don’t mind waiting a lifetime for warm water — and even then sometimes patience is no good — shower before 9:30 a.m. for optimimum heated showering time.

You’ve got a ton of homework to complete, but naturally, procrastinating takes over. Chances are, people on your floor are procrastinating homework, too, so ask around and start a study group. What better way to be productive and also maintain a social life?

6. Don’t be introverted

Don’t be that person who simply exists on the floor and no one knows who you are. Keep your door open whenever you’re just chilling. This is the easiest and quickest way to make friends. In case you haven’t caught on, friends are good.

Braley Dodson: How is your definition of diversity different from the traditional definition of diversity?

Jesus Trevino: I distinguish between diversity and inclusiveness, and I use the metaphor of the dance.

Diversity is being asked to a dance and inclusiveness is being asked to dance.

In other words, diversity is about representation. Are there communities that are represented here that we need to be attentive to in terms of increasing them for programs and initiatives to bring them in and once they’re here, do we have the programs and initiatives from them to thrive, succeed make contributions of the university. That’s diversity. Inclusiveness are the populations here — are they being welcomed in the curriculum, procedures and marketing so we send the message to all backgrounds saying you’re welcome here and we want you to make contributions to the education of each other. Ultimately that’s where diversity really pays off, when you have someone from China talking to someone from a farm to learn, grow and understand the world better.

BD: Any big changes or plans for next year?

JT: Next year we will be focusing on implementing all the plans from the schools and vice presidents and making sure they take place so we can transform institutions. Most campuses are making sure they take care of students and everyone gets along as opposed to transforming so there is

a culture that lives on and is not just one year and will impact incoming generations.

BD: What are microagressions and how do they impact the university?

JT: Microagressions are the small, unintentional and unconscious slights or insults that are directed at different communities that basically say you don’t belong here. It’s something that we all do and need to be conscious about. “That’s so gay” is a microagression for example. People don’t know exactly what their aversion is or the origin of that word.

“Being an Indian giver” is another microagression.

The behavioral microagressions are somebody who sees an African American male coming their way and they get scared or they go the other way thinking that person will hurt them.

Everybody does this, so we are all struggling as a community to be attentive and aware of those things.

BD: Anything incoming students should know about the Office of Diversity?

JT: We are in the business of trying to get students to interact across their differences. When new students come to the university, you are going to encounter the world here. It is important for us to learn about other communities. That is the mission of the university — to educate and prepare students for leadership positions in a very highly diverse society in the world. Get to know somebody new.
