The momentum is on their side. However, SDSU’s defense is giving up 94 more yards per game then they did at this point last season. Glenn said a lot of that has to do with inexperience.

Glenn also said the Jacks’ defense has seven new starters from when they played last year.

First-year running back Trevor Bouma said they have seen a few things on film giving him confidence in what they will be able to do come Saturday.

“We feel like we’ll be able to run the ball against them and do some good things offensively,” Bouma said. “They aren’t a big blitzing team, so we’ll look to take advantage of them.”

Despite being worse statistically than they were a year ago, offensive coordinator Wesley Beschorner said his offense still thinks very highly of the Jackrabbit defense.

“They have less experience than a year ago, but they’re still a good defense. They’re big, tall, fast and athletic like most teams

in our conference,” Beschorner said. “Stats don’t tell the whole story every time.”

The Jackrabbits boast the Missouri Valley Conference leader in tackles, senior middle linebacker R.C. Kilgore, who has 105 tackles on the season.

Bouma said the SDSU defense plays very smart.

“They play a base defense so their linebackers normally sit back and read the plays,” Bouma said. “(Kilgore) plays smart and picks up plays pretty fast.”

Last week both Bouma and backup first-year running back Jordan Roberts left the game numerous times because of injuries. Bouma has dealt with a shoulder issue ever since the team played Northern Iowa Oct. 19 and Roberts has been dealing with a lower leg injury.

“I hope I’ll be able to play, but I’m not totally sure. It depends how I’m feeling,” Bouma said.

The question mark at running back will force the team to rely heavily on sophomore quarterback Kevin Earl, who has helped turn around a unit that struggled early in the year. “(Earl) has gotten better with repetitions and he’s playing well right now,” Beschorner said.

“We’re not going to ask him to do anything he normally doesn’t do though. What we’ll be game planning for is to put him and the rest of the offense in the best place to succeed.

One of the questions leading into Saturday’s game for the Coyotes is how they’ll stay motivated after losing three straight games, including the last two within the final moments of the game.

“We’re all looking forward to this game and want to send the seniors out right and get a big rivalry win,” Bouma said.

Grant Bosiacki: What is the biggest difference in South Dakota State this year compared to last year?

Joe Glenn: They were awfully good at defense last year. They’re really good this year but all the new starters would be the biggest difference.

Earl now has six starts under his belt and has a three-game winning streak and losing streak to show for it. Kilgore, who leads the Missouri Valley Conference with 105 tackles will have to be all over the field Saturday. Don’t be surprised to see him try and take away Earl’s under routes over the middle.

Tyler Starr vs. Bryan Witzmann Starr leads the MVC in sacks with nine and is only one sack away from breaking USD’s all-time record with 27. Witzmann is battle tested, as a four-year starter for the Jacks’ high-powered offense. Whomever wins this one-on-one matchup will have a big edge Saturday.

GB: How are the players feeling leading up to this game?

JG: They’ll be ready. This is our in-state rival, and it’s the biggest rival we’ve got. That’s exciting.

John Stiegelmeier: It feels closer to the rivalry and what the rivalry used to be. Last year was just the start. Like a lot of things, you have to start somewhere.

Zenner had over 2,000 yards rushing last season and is right on par with last year’s pace. Taverna, USD’s leading tackler, will not only be responsible for slowing down SDSU’s passing game but also limiting Zenner’s big runs.

JG: This is for all the bragging rights. There are Coyote and Jackrabbit fans all over, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Jordan Johnson threw for 337 yards. He was able to extend some plays, which resulted in broken coverage and too many big plays.

“We’ll have to fix some things up, look at our plays and fix those mental mistakes,” Iddings said.

JG: Pandemonium. It will be really good. Lots of cheering and booing, and I’m just hoping everyone uses good judgment. You can go ahead and cheer for your respective team. I just hope people aren’t throwing things on the field, and things like that.

Three keys to victory For USD to beat SDSU

For SDSU to beat USD

1. Energize the Dome: The Coyotes historically know how to defend the DakotaDome. The crowd should be as loud as they’ve been all season. A quick score for the Coyotes could get the crowd going in a hurry.

1. Feed Zenner: Zenner has been the key cog for the Jackrabbit offense for the past two years. In last year’s 31-8 victory, he racked up 164 yards and a score. More Zenner equals more success.

2. Avoid big plays: Montana’s junior wide receiver Ellis Henderson made big play after big play last week, and the defensive backs looked lost in coverage at times.

The Coyotes need to shore that up quickly if they want a victory.

2. Third down defense: SDSU ranks dead last in the Missouri Valley Conference at third down defense. Opponents are successfully converting 45 percent of the time against them on the crucial down. They’ll have to get USD in some third and longs.

3. Fill gaps on defense: Zenner is very good at reading his blocking and making a defender miss. USD’s linebackers need to fill their gaps to make sure Zenner isn’t hitting the second level of the Coyote defense.

3. Pass protection: Starr has nine sacks for the Coyotes, and the Jacks have already given up 37 sacks, second worst in the MVC.

NE: What has surprised you most about USD this year?

JS: People don’t understand it takes at least 3-4 years to get a program where you want it, and they’re really in their second year. Coach Glenn and his staff and the players have done a really great job actually. Earl, the quarterback, has made really good strides.

NE: How are the players feeling leading up to this game?

JS: Everything else gets put on a shelf. There’s the pride, the state championship to beat the other team in the state, but it’s exciting. This is college football at its best, college sports are at its best when you get a rivalry game where the focus is on “we want to beat you because we want to be the best.”

NE: What’s the most fun thing about coaching in such a big game for you?

JS: I really think there’s more pressure for a coach, to be honest. I love the “bigness” of the game.

Saturday marks the final time the band of University of South Dakota football seniors will take the field in the DakotaDome when the go head-to-head with in-state rival South Dakota State University.

Head coach Joe Glenn said a victory on Senior Day would be big for the seniors but also for the program.

“It’s the last game in the DakotaDome, and we want to send our senior’s out on a winning note,” Glenn said. “It would be a big win for us. We need it.”

While poised to be an important game for the team and it’s graduating seniors, a win during Saturday’s match-up would also secure a winning home record for the Coyotes.

Senior tight end Tyler Wilhelm said the gravity of the match-up would only make a win that much sweeter.

“It’s our last home game, and we always want to finish with a win in the Dome,” senior Tyler Wilhelm said. “The fact that it’s our rival, SDSU, would mean a lot to us seniors, this team, and the city of Vermillion. We want to go out and get a win in the Dome for everybody.”

During his career at USD, Wilhelm made 27 receptions for 405 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Murtha said that not only would help both the school and the team.

“It’s really an important game,” Murtha said. “We win this game it helps not only our school, but our morale. This week everyone is psyched and pumped up and ready to go. It shouldn’t be more than others but every week is different.”

For Coyote fans, it has been ten years since the Jackrabbits took the field against USD in Vermillion, leaving a generation of students not seeing the game for themselves.

Senior Tyler Starr, whose 27 sacks ties a USD record, said that getting a win against SDSU would be the highlight of his Coyote career.

“It would be one of my most memorable moments here if we do come out with a victory,” Starr said. “It would mean so much to the community and to the program to get a win.”

The Coyotes have lost threestraight games— including two at home, but a win against SDSU would right the wrong for the Coyotes’ season.

Murtha said getting a victory against the Jacks could mean better support from the University and the boosters.

“It will bring more kids to school here, and bring more boosters to the program,” Murtha said. “For our USD, it will help the program out. You can only go north not south by getting a victory this weekend.”

It has been a decade since Coyote players have had the chance to beat SDSU at home and to improve the series record, which the Coyotes lead 52-49-7.

“It’s two really good teams in South Dakota coming up and stepping up their game, and have been doing well in the Missouri Valley Conference,” Starr said. “It’ll be an all-around fun game and even better win if we get it.”

Rivalry game poised to improve after lackluster 2012 Austin aSHLOCK is a junior majoring in contemporary media and journalism.

We’ve seen the game before, we remember the score. We know what it feels like to have two teams entrenched in a historical rivalry once again,

but one thing we still haven’t experienced is that rivalry returned to our home field.

The return of the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University to the DakotaDome has been a long ten-year wait, but lucky for us, the wait is over.

This changes everything.

Both teams are in much different places than they were just 365 days ago. The Jackrabbits (6-4) still boast the running talent of junior running back Zach Zenner,

but a seventh place spot in the Missouri Valley is far from what they were hoping for after their run for the postseason in 2012.

The difference is mostly seen by the defensive play, or the lack of defense, as seen in 2013. This season, the SDSU defense has allowed 28.6 points per game, while in 2012 they allowed an impressive 16.4.

This is ideal for a Coyote team that is finally finding an offensive identity thanks

to mid-season replacement quarterback Kevin Earl.

Since Earl stepped under center in USD’s Dakota Days game Oct. 5, the Coyotes have gone 3-2 and have nearly doubled their point production from 12.5 points per game to 24 points per game.

Earl has shown he can make plays in any situation, scoring seven touchdowns through the air and another three on the ground.

On top of that, the

sophomore has thrown for over 200 yards three times this season, with a high of 370 yards during a doubleOT thriller against Northern Iowa.

Paired with the consistent play from running backs Trevor Bouma and Jordan Roberts, the USD offense has come a long way since 2012 where they were outscored by an average of 31-17.

Coyote fans can be rest assured a repeat of last year’s revived rivalry game, which

resulted in a 31-8 beat down will not be repeated.

Much more evenly matched on both sides of the ball, USD and SDSU fans may get the rematch they deserve Saturday inside the Dome where things are sure to feel electric.

So cheer hard Coyote fans.

This is our chance to return this 124-year-old rivalry to where it deserves.

Rivalry continues in academic fields

As the oldest public university in the state, the University of South Dakota is the liberal arts college of South Dakota, as determined by a 1939 law.

South Dakota State University bases its history as the land-grant university — Congress passed a law in 1862 to establish the university, which would focus on agriculture and engineering.

Alumnus and former USD Foundation President Ted Muenster said the mission of each school is different and comes from the histories of each university.

"Students who graduate from USD should have a

broad background in a variety of subjects so they can be more productive and knowledgeable citizens," he said. "The mission of SDSU is to reach out into the state and provide assistance and research support for the industrial and agricultural sectors in the state."

Muenster said it is also notable both presidents are small-town South Dakotans who attended their respected universities.

"They have a lot of common background, and they work well together," he said.

The rivalry between the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University will be concentrated in the DakotaDome Saturday, but the two universities are in competition for more than what is just on the football field.

USD and SDSU are also competing as academic institutions.

SDSU has gained the regional reputation as an agriculture and a technology school, SDSU Academic Provost Laurie Nichols said.

Meanwhile, USD Provost Chuck Staben said USD has become a school for future leaders

and professionals.

“Our main attraction is that we are the flagship university of South Dakota and we are the place that produces many of South Dakota’s leaders and professionals,” Staben said.

USD has approximately 10,380 students enrolled this year, while SDSU stands as South Dakota’s largest school at 12,580 students.

Nichols said SDSU graduates are doing well when it comes to finding jobs after college, including anyone in agriculture or agronomy despite recent economy down turns.

The University of South Dakota Student Services Office will offer 100 free tickets to all students for the Nov. 21 women’s basketball game against Drake University at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

The regular student price at the door of the Pentagon will be $5, but the 100 tickets are being made available to all students.

1945 University of South Dakota President I.D. Weeks applied to the National Housing Agency for 50 emergency trailer units to provide housing for veterans and their families. Each trailer will be equipped with studio couches, an oil heater, a refrigerator and two clothing closets.

1972 To bridge the gap in knowledge between Indians and Non-Indians, the Native American Association sponsored Indian Awareness Days. A panel including LeRoy Greaves, Tom Shortbull and other Indian Leaders spoke at University of South Dakota.

The Indian Student Association recently requested $1,500 from the Student Association, but was denied with no cause. The SA granted $750.

“We don’t have any say in how our Bureau of Indian Affairs grants are spent by the university. They spend it in whatever way they want without spending it for the Indian students.,” Greaves said.

“We could just threaten to transfer to another campus.

School of Medicine recognized for impact VOLANTE STAFF REPORTS The Sanford School of Medicine’s Yankton Ambulatory Program was selected as a recipient of the 2013 GRMC Shining Star of Educational Innovation award.

The award is sponsored by the American Association of

Medical Colleges and recognizes the impact of the Yankton Ambulatory Program on its students and the community according to a University of South Dakota press release.

The Ambulatory Program integrated third-year medical student educational programs on the Yankton campus, which

is the original clinical campus of the Sanford School of Medicine.

The program stresses care, curriculum and preceptors, problem-based learning and is student centered.

The Sanford School of Medicine integrated the longitudinal model to all campuses in 2013.

The program is also aiding in the fight against the rural physician shortage.

Fifty percent of students who have participated in the Yankton program enter primary care fields, and provide primary care physicians for the state of South Dakota, reported the release.

Student artwork to be displayed Nov. 15 Students' artwork will be displayed Nov. 15 at the Vermillion Area Arts Council at 7 p.m for “Art Here.”

“Art Here is just the representation of art that has come past the point of pretty or nice and into an idea or state of dominance over the presence,” Sophia Wemers, USD Student Art Association president, said in a press release.

Many of the art pieces entered in the contest have also been displayed in local and national art shows. The event will showcase sculptures, ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking and graphic design.

The Vermillion Area Arts Council is located at 202 Washington St. in Vermillion.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at the University of South Dakota will host its annual philanthropic event, Thursday Night Live, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in Aalfs Auditorium.

Now in its 17th year, Thursday Night Live is a comedy sketch show, with the proceeds from the event benefitting Cure Kids Cancer, an organization aimed at researching life-saving treatments for pediatric cancer.

Cure Kids Cancer supports the pediatric oncology center at Sanford’s Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Last year, the event raised more than $3,500 for the organization University of South Dakota press release.

Tickets for Thursday Night Live are $5 and can be purchased at the Muenster University Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Thursday. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the performance.

State Former SDSU student charged with spreading Nation HIV infection Oregon named best Demetrius Colaites, 19, was city for millenials charged with two counts of intentionally causing exposure to the HIV infection and one count of sexual contact with a person incapable of giving consent Brookings County State’s Attorney Clyde Calhoon told the Argus Leader.

The two victims are South Dakota State University students. Colaites was a student at SDSU according to court documents, but an SDSU spokesperson said he is no longer attending classes at the university.

Colaites was arrested Oct. 31

by SDSU police. The judge set his bond Nov. 1 at $20,000.

Portland, Ore. was named the best city for millennials by Vocative. The Livability Index was created by the organization to pick the 35 Best Cities for People Under 35.

The index used measurements such as average rent, cheapest gas, lowest cost of transportation and highest public transportation usage. They also accounted for number of coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, music venues and cheap takeout food.

Some regional cities made this list: Minneapolis, Minn. at number five, Denver, Colo. at

number nine, Omaha, Neb. at number 13, Kansas City, Mo. at 21 and Milwaukee, Wis. at 34. No city in the Dakotas or Iowa made the list.

Portland made the top spot for its strong job market, cheap utilities and vibrant music scene.

Vocative said they compiled the list after a report from the Pew Research Center found 36 percent of adults ages 18 to 31 live at home with their parents, the highest number in 40 years.

World Typhoons continue to hit the Philippines TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) — Typhoon-ravaged

Philippine islands faced a daunting relief effort that had barely begun Monday, as bloated bodies lay uncollected and uncounted in the streets and survivors pleaded for food, water and medicine.

Police guarded stores to prevent people from hauling off food, water and such non-essentials as TVs and treadmills, but there was often no one to carry away the dead — not even those seen along the main road from the airport to Tacloban, the worst-hit city along the country's remote eastern seaboard.

Two officials said Sunday that Friday's typhoon may have killed 10,000 or more

people, but with the slow pace of recovery, the official death toll remained well below that. The Philippine military confirmed 942 dead, but shattered communications, transportation links and local governments suggest the final toll is days away. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said "we pray" that the death toll is less than 10,000.

"I don't believe there is a single structure that is not destroyed or severely damaged in some way — every single building, every single house," U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy said after taking a helicopter flight over the city.

The Association for Advancement of Women’s Rights will be showing the movie “What Women Want” Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Al Neuharth Media Center Conference Room.

Golden Globe nominated “What Women Want” is a movie from 2000 staring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. The film is about an executive at a company (Gibson) who gains the ability to hear what women are really thinking after an accident.

The AAWR encourages men to bring a female friend and women to bring a male friend to the showing. A short discussion will follow about women’s rights according to an email from AAWR.

Forgotten legacy What is known to most as the “State-U” rivalry has a legacy that goes back generations, but somehow has been forgotten by current Coyotes and Jackrabbits.

Revamping the rivalry is one of many actions the university is taking to make the University of South Dakota a better institution in the long run. While most students complain about the changes happening, they just aren’t seeing the bigger picture. The transition into Division I as well as boosting academics will have a positive effect on the campus in coming years.

The campaign to reignite the rivalry began when USD joined ranks with South Dakota State University by entering Division I. The two teams hadn’t thrown down since 2003, and in 2012, the first rivalry football game in nine years took place on Jackrabbit turf.

While attendance was high, it seemed to be less than what both universities had expected.

Officials had hoped to break the attendance record at the Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings, which was 16,345 set at a game against North Dakota State in 2007. Among the 15,270 people in attendance, the fire and competitiveness that should have been there between the students — just wasn’t.

This year, the rivalry is coming to Coyote territory and the hype of rivalry week has been lacking in a sense.

The USD vs. SDSU legacy is

one that kept students excited and competitive for decades.

It was a commonality between all students and brought generations of USD students together under one idea: Hate State.

While a majority of the campus knows of the rivalry and is quick to buy sweatshirts and T-shirts embellished with “Hate State” slogans, it seems as though most don’t truly take the rivalry as seriously as it has been in the past.

While throwing dead animals on the field may seem outrageous today, at least some sort of fire should be ignited for a game such as this. The anticipation throughout the week should be on a level that brings together the entire campus and alumni.

Renewing the rivalry and starting a new era of Hate State is essential to the heart of the university. Students should take the time to realize how important this one tradition truly is to the campus.

Embracing it will not only add something special to the campus, but students will be able to feel the passion of being a Coyote like many generations have before them.

The sooner students start to understand the importance of the legacy as well as embrace the many changes on USD’s campus, the more they will fuel the legacy and appreciate the university for the shining institution it is.

Quick, convenient cup of coffee is not a reality on the university campus KATHLEEN SERIE is a sophomore majoring in contemporary media and journalism.

Everyone has a weakness for something, whether it is for chocolate or video games, reality television shows or baby kittens. No matter what your weakness is, most can agree that there is no denying the urge to fulfill it.

Mine just so happens to be caffeine, particularly in the form of strong, straight coffee. Without at

least one cup to start my day, I turn into a bit of a zombie — think Walking Dead style. I usually try my hardest to brew a fresh pot at home each morning, but sometimes this just doesn’t happen.

This is where the college campus saves the day with ample numbers of easily accessible coffee shops, right? Wrong. With a scarce number of choices on campus to purchase various forms of caffeine, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to feed my addiction. Call me biased, but caffeine seems to be a staple for college students.

How else would we survive four classes a day on two

hours of sleep?

I understand the University of South Dakota is a small university, which means we cannot have a Caribou Coffee in every building on campus.

However, I find it slightly ridiculous when the one and only place that students can purchase a hot cup of coffee from is the Muenster University Center.

I realize the MUC is a rather central location on campus, but for students attending class in Slagle Hall, Beacom, McKusick or even the Fine Arts Center, it’s a lengthy walk for one cup of coffee.

Not to mention, the lines are usually long since there are

only two places to get this good from, both in the MUC. This being said, I honestly feel the university could greatly benefit from at least two other cafe locations.

Before you go calling me a selfish coffee drinker, remember this isn’t the only beverage available at these shops. There’s hot chocolate, the ever-popular pumpkin spice latte, tea, smoothies and blended drinks.

These places could probably even sell a limited amount of food to feed the typically late-running college students who don’t have time to eat a balanced meal for breakfast. It sounds nice, doesn’t it? Accidentally sleeping past your alarm, but

still being able to swing by a strategically placed coffee shop to get that morning fix of caffeine or a quick burst of energy from a granola bar.

Those of you who attended USD last year may remember the presence of a cafe in the Al Neuharth Media Center. Not only did it benefit the students attending class in the building itself, but it was also a place neighboring buildings such as Beacom and the law school received great use from. I was immediately disappointed when I returned to school this year to find out the Neuharth Cafe had closed.

I understand its closing had to do with the Freedom

Forum’s affiliation with USD, but from what I had observed it was a fairly lucrative business.

Personally, I would like to see this change. Coffee shops are not that large or hard to maintain, and the presence of additional shops on campus would create jobs for students. And trust me, if college students smell caffeine, they’ll flock to it.

Plus, with rumors floating around that our bunny friends to the north might be receiving a Starbucks, it seems only fair for us to step up our game when it comes to the availability of coffee.

This is the No. 1 rule of rivalry week. If students don’t show up and absolutely pack the student section at a home game against the longest rivalry in the history of the university, that just looks sad on our behalf.

It’s a long-standing rivalry for a reason. Take the week to show some school pride and get into the excitement of playing SDSU in the DakotaDome for the first time since 2003.

No matter the score of the game, make sure to stay a true Coyote for the entire game and the time after. The entire point of a school rivalry and a legacy such as this is to show just how much the students love USD and cherish being a Coyote, win or lose.

If you miss out on tailgating and the game, you’re going to regret it. This is the biggest game of the year and will most likely be the most exciting time to be standing in the student section at the DakotaDome.

Schools put tons of money into anti-bullying programs, but it is all for show. When confronted with issues of harassment and bullying, they are useless.

Plenty of us were bullied or harassed, so how did we overcome it? We didn’t have these new rules in place or all these awareness programs. Nor did we grow up in the generations before us — when they had a problem, they would settle it themselves. They had to suck it up and move on.

Cyberspace has made bully-

ing a big deal in today’s society.

When a person is being bullied, they can’t run away from it. Everywhere they go, they are bullied online, in class, at lunch or in their own homes.

The cycle is neverending.

Everyone at some point in time has argued online with someone and sent them mean or hurtful things. It’s easier to say those things behind a screen, because there aren’t really any serious consequences. I mean what’s the worst that can happen? Getting suspended for 24 hours or being blocked. To me, that’s not a very good deter-

rent.

Maybe that’s all bullying is, just a continuous cycle of people not being held accountable for the hurtful actions they take or maybe people just want to overcome the inferiority they feel when they are being bullied.

In the end, the anti-bullying campaigns remain futile in the wake of the digital era when bullying has become as easy as the click of a mouse.

I haven’t witnessed many cases of bullying on the University of South Dakota’s campus, but it is still something that I believe impacts everyone. People hear on the news all the time about teens killing themselves over bullying, and how they told people, but no one helped. The truth is, these anti-bullying programs sound and look great on the outside, but in the end, no one really pays attention them.

When I recognize people from previous downtown excursions, I wonder if they too recognize me and wonder why they see me so often.

Although, I have noticed that there is a certain no-no attached to drinking and partying so often, I, along with thousands of other students around the country, have been led to believe that this is the thing to do while in college. This is the time to be stupid and make mistakes. “What about your grades?” “Who is that and why are you going home with them?” These are a few questions I have been asked. But I wonder when people feel guilty and realize that they drink too heavily — more importantly, when they feel that they have made bad decisions because of drinking.

I find the difference in how much is too much interesting. Going out almost every night is a bit excessive, and then there are people that think going out once or twice a

week is crossing the line. It certainly depends on how much drinking and partying affects a person’s other living habits like school and work.

I am not bad-mouthing drinking by any means, but experiencing this on a daily basis, I wonder if my drinking habits are the cause of many of my problems. Ever think to yourself, “Maybe I should stop drinking and provide myself with a better future and opportunities by going to class and not going out once or twice a week?” Perhaps that is a sign to buckle down and do what you came to college to do — academics come first and having fun comes second. Life lesson number one.

YOUR SAY Letter to the Editor Professor doubts ‘discrimination alone’ leads to gender gap The war between the sexes, perhaps humankind’s oldest, continues to flicker on the University of South Dakota campus.

Payton Randle fired an opening salvo in the Oct. 2 Volante, questioning the need for a feminist women’s group on campus.

Sarah Heerdt responded, arguing that the existence of the wage gap, violence against women and employment disparities illustrate the need for a group on campus advocating for and supporting women.

Interest in this subject is further heightened by The Volante initiating a four-part series on the status of women in South Dakota, the first installment of which relies heavily on a report of the Center for American Progress.

Heerdt and the report of the

Center for American Progress both correctly assert that, based on annual data, women earn only 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Such a figure is simple, but of no use in evaluating claims of discrimination.

Discrimination alone does not determine compensation.

As Heerdt apparently understands, raw figures must be adjusted for number of hours worked, years of continuous experience in the workforce, level of education, occupation in which the person works and a host of other factors, not all of which can be quantified.

The wage gap diminishes dramatically once adjustments for these productivity factors are made, and in some cases disappears.

The wage gap seldom completely disappears under statistical analysis. In 1998, the

typical labor economist at top research universities believed that about 20 percent of the raw gap was due to employer discrimination.

This may be too much today.

For example, a 2010 report prepared for the Labor Department

by CONSAD Research Corporation states that it is doubtful whether “… any portion of the observed gender wage gap … can be confidently attributed to overt discrimination against women.”

The forward to the CONSAD report states “… the raw wage gap should not be used as the basis to justify corrective action.

Indeed, there may be nothing to correct.”

12.9 percent of architecture and engineering positions and about a fourth of executive positions. However, it has never been the case that all occupational ratios are equal to population ratios. Blacks comprise only about fourteen percent of the population, but almost eighty percent of the NBA roster is black. Jews have long been disproportionately prominent in the garment industry. Furthermore, Jews comprise only two percent of the U.S. population, yet they won 37 percent of all Nobel prizes awarded to Americans between 1901 and 2005. Lack of proportionality tells us nothing about discrimination.

Feminist advocates often overlook the pressure to end discrimination that is exerted by competitive markets. Given equal productivity, any firm

that pays men more than women is forgoing substantial profits, and this provides a substantial incentive not to discriminate. A free market is perhaps the best and most effective anti-discrimination policy.

A consistent belief underlying many comments on discrimination is that equal opportunity implies equal outcomes.

This is patently untrue. Anyone who still believes, after more than a half century of research, that contemporary differences in earnings in the U.S. are due largely to systemic discrimination, and that discrimination is costless to the discriminator, has not been paying attention.

ROTC probation Nearly 40,000 computer causes 'angst' infections could be found VOLANTE STAFF REPORTS

Political pressure and “a lot of angst” from state representatives led to the U.S. Army retaining the University of South Dakota’s Reserve Officer's Training Corps program on a probationary period, said Lt. Col. Ross Nelson.

This reversal is counter to the announcement made Oct. 9, when Nelson, military science department chair, and USD President James Abbott received a letter from the Army notifying them the program would be eliminated by the organization at the end of the 2014-15 academic school year.

Nelson, who was made aware to the Army’s latest decision Nov. 6, said the probation will likely last for one to two years. He said he also expects more specifics about expected graduation numbers and other probation expectations within the next few weeks.

A copy of the letter received by U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson’s (D-S.D.) office about the Army’s reversal said schools on probation that do not meet the standards after a year will then be issued a one year’s notice of intent to close the unit, reported a Nov. 7 article in the Yankton Press & Dakotan.

While the Army may be placing new benchmarks on USD’s ROTC, Nelson said a major aspect of assistance could be supplying the university’s program with a recruiting officer — a position yet to be filled by the Army.

As Nelson deals with the specifics of probation, students are expressing frustration over the decision, he said.

“There is some angst among the students,” Nelson said. “They are wondering, ‘Is it really turned back on,’ and all I can say is we need to keep building and retaining people in this program.”

Last year, the University of South Dakota spent more than $3 million on utilities.

The four main utilities — electricity, sewage, natural gas and water — are split between academic buildings and auxiliary facilities, which are residence halls and student centers, such as the Muenster University Center.

The cost of utilities from June 2012 to May 2013 was $2.1 million for academic buildings and $877,472 for auxiliary buildings.

Electricity was the most expensive utility, costing the university $1.9 million. Natural gas followed with $745,140.

Water and sewer costs were the least expensive, totaling $205,108 and $206,245.

Sophomore Melissa Hessman said she and her roommates conserve electricity in their dorm.

“I don’t think I use that much electricity,” Hessman said. “Normally, we have the blinds open.”

Hessman said keeping the blinds open and lights off isn’t something her roommate and she do consciously to be sustainable, but the two do make an effort to recycle.

When it comes to other utilities, like water and sewage, she said it is harder to cut back.

“You kind of have to live with water,” Hessman said.

Junior Mason Horacek lives off campus, but said he does a few things to go green.

“I turn off my fan when I’m sleeping and unplug things when I’m not using them,” Horacek said.

His faucet drips, but Horacek said he has tried different tricks to stop it.

“It’s less than pennies per drop, but it all builds up,” Horacek said.

Saving energy and conserving utilities is harder for other students on campus, like sophomore Sarah Wadsworth.

“I use my fan all day, every day,” Wadsworth said. “I’m not the best at saving energy.”

Wadsworth said there

is less motivation to save energy when it is a fixed cost on tuition. She said she has heard her hair straightener and blow dryer, which she keeps on after she leaves the shower to heat her room, use large amounts of energy.

“I had it going all the time,” Wadsworth said.

However, Wadsworth said she hardly ever turns on the main light in her room, but uses either a sunlight or a lamp.

“Sometimes, when I go to the bathroom, or I’m in a hurry, I leave everything on,” Wadsworth said.

First-year Megan Murray has faced a reality other students share. After clicking a link on Facebook, a virus was installed onto her laptop, causing her hard drive to crash.

“It just kind of appeared one day,” Murray said. “(IT) said I’d have to get a whole new hard drive.”

Murray isn’t alone. This semester, the Information Technology Services Help Desk in the I.D. Weeks Library has provided support for more than 1,248 student laptops.

From July until mid-October, 26,543 infections were found on computers brought into the desk. Out of the infections found, 1,203 were classified as critical threats, 12,260 were potentially unwanted programs and 13,080 were adware-tracking cookies.

Cheryl Tiahrt, director of IT, said the infections are found when students bring their laptops to the desk, usually because students are having difficulties connecting to the network.

Tiahrt said all computers are scanned, no matter what they are brought in for. For computers that have multiple viruses, it could take multiple scans spanning over several hours to catch and remove them all.

“A lot of systems are infected with malware,” Tiahrt said.

Tiahrt said it is likely around 40,000 infections will be found by the end of the semester.

The malware could be anything from tracking cookies to more malicious infections, such as viruses. An up and coming virus, cryptolocker, will encrypt data on computers, and pay the user to decrypt the data, Tiahrt said.

She said the university will be putting a notice out alerting users to the new malware.

“One laptop could have dozens or hundreds,” Tiahrt said. “Some of them are more dangerous than others.”

If an infection is found on a computer, the help desk details to the student what was found. The infections are removed free of charge, but if an operating system has to be reloaded, there may be a fee.

Student information such as billing information and transcripts are kept on Board of Regents computers and managed on a different network.

Junior Tasha Lewis has experience with the help desk, but has not had many problems with infections.

“My computer likes to freak out,” Lewis said. “It just likes to do things on its own.”

Her computer will often make items on the screen appear large. Lewis brought her computer into the help desk, where the problem was fixed, and she was walked through how to solve the problem in the future.

As for infections, Lewis credits virus protection on her computer for preventing any problems.

“I haven’t had any problems that I know,” Lewis said. “I’m very lucky.”

of Regents’ student conduct code dictates how plagiarism is dealt with at the University of South Dakota.

Plagiarism is a violation of the South Dakota Board of Regents code 3.4 or the student conduct code — therefore, it is to be handled by Student Life.

“Academic Affairs is the right way to go, not Student Services,” senior Emily McKeen said.

“A good starting point would be with the professor.”

The reason it is referred to Student Services is to allow for due process with the student, Teresa McDowell-Johnson, Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities said.

The other goal, she said, is to funnel cases of plagiarism from different departments in one central location on campus.

McDowell-Johnson estimated there were approximately 20 cases brought to Student Rights and Responsibilities last year.

When a faculty member believes a student is plagiarizing, they deal with the academic side, such as the grade. A referral is then made to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

“We identify if the student has actually plagiarized,” McDowell-Johnson said.

Depending on the severity of the incident, students can be placed on probation or even expelled, McDowell-Johnson said.

“The first routes that are taken are educationally, what resources can we provide students so that they are not having a referral in the future,” said McDowell-Johnson.

Seniors Chelsea Vanderlinde and Stacia Briard have spent their fall semesters student teaching in elementary classrooms.

As part of their student teaching, they are expected to construct lesson plans and teach those lessons to their students. For English-language arts and math, that means those lessons are based on the Common Core standards, rather than the previous South Dakota content standards.

According to South Dakota Common Core, the Common Core standards are specific to the content areas of Englishlanguage arts and mathematics. While not developed or mandated by the federal government, 45 of the 50 states have adopted the standards, which are designed to ensure that students are better prepared for college. South Dakota adopted the Common Core standards in November 2010, and they went into effect this fall.

But that doesn’t mean the University of South Dakota’s School of Education just started teaching its students about Common Core this year. Gary Zalud, chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction for the School of Education, said his department started incorporating the concept last year.

“Our faculty helped develop some of the teacher in-service training about Common Core,” Zalud said. “We’ve also sent other faculty members to those in service trainings and other workshops that the state of South Dakota has held.”

Professors are trained on the new standards, and Zalud said he expects more classes to focus more of their content on Common Core.

“The professor needs to gauge whether or not it was real plagiarism and how to correctly deal with it,” Lundin said.

Carol Leibiger, an associate professor and coordinator of information literacy, said faculty members should use accidental plagiarism as an educational opportunity.

“For the students who are inadvertently plagiarizing, if faculty members discover, that could make it into a teaching moment rather than penalizing the student, or only penalizing the student, then we would be treating inadvertent plagiarism appropriately,” Leibiger said.

USD has implemented in first-year English courses information literacy programs and quizzes to teach students about academic integrity and plagiarism.

“Students need to remember what they learned in English

Leibiger said students not taking enough time with research can cause accidental plagiarism.

“If they don’t take enough time, then they don’t keep track of where they got their information,” Leibiger said.

Michelle Rogge Gannon, USD Writing Center director, said students can make appointments to go over Modern Language Association citation styles to make sure they are using the correct styles.

“The Writing Center is a good place for them to practice those skills. It is student writer to student writer conversation,” Rogge Gannon said. “We see this as an opportunity for them to help gain skills.”

She said the student is ultimately responsible for plagiarism after visiting the Writing Center.

Dudley said if students still

are unsure about if they are plagiarizing they should talk to their instructor.

“There are a lot of gray areas,” he said. “You just have to ask.”

Students often merely need to be educated as to what is plagiarism, Leibiger said.

“It’s been my experience that the vast amount of plagiarism is unintentional, that students don’t know how to handle resources or they have misconceptions about who owns information, especially information on the Internet,” Leibiger said.

Plagiarism is a violation of property rights and copyright violations are a violation of the law she said.

If a student is accused of plagiarism, he or she does have the right to appeal an academic decision, according to BOR policy 2.9.

I’d expect that to start showing up more in their classes,” Zalud said. “If you look at any of our syllabi, it always shows the standard each lesson is responding to.”

The South Dakota Board of Regents requires no training on the Common Core standards for education majors. Instead, they made sure the professors were properly trained on the standards. “(South Dakota’s) Department of Education developed some training for current teachers, and those programs had professors involved with that, so they were also trained and had direct experience with the standards,” said Sam Gingerich, vice president for academic affairs for the BOR. Gingerich also said with the full year of student teaching that USD implemented for the first time this year, the BOR expects the school’s programs to prepare its students to teach in those classrooms.

Briard is student teaching in a fourth grade classroom at Dakota Valley Elementary School in North Sioux City, S.D., where the Common Core standards have been implemented for both English-language arts and math.

“My classes last year kind of used the Common Core standards, but we weren’t required to use them,” Briard said.

Fortunately, Briard said it was easy to adjust to using Common Core.

“You are given the objectives, so it’s similar to any other standards,” she said.

Vanderlinde is student teaching in a fifth grade classroom at Alcester-Hudson Elementary School in Alcester, S.D. “For all the lesson plans we’re required to make for our classes, we’re required to use standards and we would use the Common Core standards for English-language arts and math,” Vanderlinde said. “We never went in-depth on them,

but the transition from content standards to Common Core standards is not difficult.”

Vanderlinde said while she felt prepared to teach using the Common Core standards, she sees room for improvement from the School of Education.

“It’ll get better,” Vanderlinde said. “Now that they’re actually in effect, it’ll be easier for the university to teach how to use them.”

Now that the standards have officially been in use for half a semester, Vanderlinde and Briard do have differing views on whether they’re actually a positive for education.

“They’re a good idea, but realistically, they won’t work all over the country,” Briard said.

“Each state is at a different level right now, so I can see them coming out with something else in five years.”

Vanderlinde likes the Common Core standards for the continuity they bring both teachers and students.

“The majority of the U.S. has adopted them, so if a teacher moves to another state or is talking to teachers from other states, you’re all teaching the same standards,” Vanderlinde said. “If students move, they aren’t going to be behind in a different state either.”

Vanderlinde said she is “a little uncertain” about the new Smarter Balance test, which will replace the old Dakota STEP standardized test. The Smarter Balance test will be taken on the computer.

“It’s a big change,” Vanderlinde said. “The problem with these small South Dakota schools is that they don’t necessarily have the technology that this test requires. Some of us teachers here at AlcesterHudson practiced taking the tests, and I can say my students are far behind on the technology needed to be able to take the tests and the questions are extremely difficult. Fortunately this year is just a practice year for the test.”

"Enrollments have grown, campus facilities have grown and the importance of higher education to the economy and the future of the state is more evident now," Muenster said.

Sophomore Peter Chapman is a journalism major and is also a member of the track and field team at USD. He said the quality of edu-

cation at USD was unbeatable.

"Academically, the university is a very professional program and provided me with the major that I was looking for," he said.

Athletics was his main focus when looking for a college, he said.

"As a high-level competitor in track and field in high school, I knew that in order to continue to progress, I needed to find a college with a highlevel program," he said. "The

resources available to us as track athletes are great."

Chapman also said SDSU was never an option.

"Being from California, there was no recruitment effort on their part to try and recruit me for their program," he said.

"USD is without a doubt the best place I could have gone to college even if the weather is not like my Southern California home."

Despite SDSU's further advancement in D-I athletics,

Chapman said the transition is going well for USD. "We will be one of the top five schools in the Midwest for athletics in a couple years when we start recruiting more and more high-level athletes," he said. "We are without a doubt a Division I college, and our athletics programs are still growing to that level and in track and field."

Tyler Haigh is a first-year law student and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2012. Originally from Sioux Falls, he wanted to attend USD to be closer to home.

"There is great value for the education you can get at the USD School of Law," he said. "I plan on staying around South Dakota after school, so that is another reason I wanted to go to law school close to home."

He said SDSU and USD are both great schools, but that he really liked the graduate programs at USD. "They obviously have different programs, but USD has the only law school in South Dakota, so it was the best choice for me," Haigh said. "I did explore going to some different law schools, like the University of Minnesota and other schools around the Minneapolis area, but ultimately USD was the best choice because of cost and it being close to home."

Haigh said he appreciates a liberal arts degree because there are so many different opportunities to take with such a broad degree.

Haigh said his fiancee is finishing her degree at SDSU next month, and she also plans to attend graduate school at USD for physical therapy.

Junior Emily Vortherms is a musical theater major with

a dance minor. She said she chose USD because the theater program was exactly what she was looking for.

"It was also the cheapest option while still being able to pursue the major I wanted," she said.

Vortherms said she did look at SDSU and Minnesota StateMankato as other options, but said SDSU didn't have a big enough focus on Fine Arts majors.

"I was very interested in the theater program at Mankato, but it's similar to the program we have at USD, so I figured I would benefit just as much by going here," she said. "At USD, we have a huge variety of Fine Arts majors, so I think SDSU just has a different area of focus than USD." For Vortherms, getting a well-rounded education as well as specialization was important.

"I'm going to be able to go into the real world with a very specific set of skills while also having a good understanding of the world outside of my field — which, as an actor, I think is so important to have," Vortherms said.

Jessica Anderson is a senior elementary education major with a K-12 reading minor and an early childhood endorsement.

She said the main reason she attended USD was because she could transfer in the most of her previous college credits.

"I didn't consider SDSU at the time because they only had an early childhood education program, and I was interested in elementary education," she said.

“Many of our engineering students have a job before they graduate or are offered one by the time they graduate,” Nichols said. “Students studying pharmacy also have good luck finding jobs even though it’s a career not many people think about.”

The numbers of undergraduates who receive jobs after graduation are also compared between the two universities.

Staben said a university calls this employee placement.

Nichols said between 60 and 70 percent of SDSU undergraduates have jobs after they graduate from the university.

However, Staben said universities have to be careful where they get graduate employment information. “(Nichols) is most likely getting those numbers from the South Dakota Department of Labor,” Staben said.

“However, those are only the numbers of graduates that stay in South Dakota.

Our numbers are probably around 75 percent, but like SDSU’s they’re not the most accurate. However, both USD and SDSU are very good at employee placement.”

Staben said USD graduates have moved on to work in a variety of careers and positions.

“Many of our governors have been graduates of the

University of South Dakota, many of our business professionals and leaders, many of the state’s physician leaders and professionals are graduates of the USD Medical School," Staben said.

Staben said many of the state’s teachers, principals and superintendents came from USD. "The university really produces leaders for the state and the region for important professions and industries,” he said.

Staben said USD is the only designated liberal arts university in South Dakota, as well as being home to the only law, medical and accredited business school in the state.

However, Nichols said SDSU is home to a wellestablished agricultural and biological sciences college as well as programs in nursing, engineering, pharmacy and human sciences.

When looking at size of the town, Brookings is more than double the size of Vermillion, with a population of about 22,600 compared to Vermillion’s 10,800 residents.

However, Staben said bigger is not always better.

“I’ve traveled in China and talked to some parents about this place and some have chosen to send their kids here. One of the things that appeals to them is the small-town location,” Staben said. “Many Chinese parents view the United States as a dangerous place,

Originally from Minnesota, she said she didn't know a whole lot about SDSU. As you look even in the political world, Muenster said, it's pretty rare for SDSU to have prominent political leaders in the state.

"That comes from having the professional schools of law, medicine, business and education," he said. "We have more graduate, master and doctorate programs — there are a higher percentage of graduate students here, professional students, than they have at South Dakota State."

Muenster said USD also appeals to students because of economic reasons.

"The typical student here doesn't have that motivation that they were always coming here," he said. "Many students here have had thoughts of being at other schools — Northwestern or the University of Iowa — somewhere with more stature and prestige. But for economic reasons they come here — they can't afford to go to Harvard, even if they could get in to Harvard. The student body is a different mix here."

Ultimately, Muenster said, the two universities work together and feed off each other more than students usually see.

"It's all about balances — and that's the great lesson of life," he said. "Pretty much every element of life you have to balance things, and that's what the university administration does."

Students also gave their reasons for picking USD, whether it be the cost of tuition, location or the range of programs offered.

“The people are friendlier here — people here in the dorms are really accepting,” first-year Dani Emmett said.

USD and SDSU’s marching bands face off in all things band related: size, practices, competitions and overall style in their performances Kayla Prasek The Volante

As the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State prepare for their 107th meeting on the football field, each university’s marching band is also preparing to entertain before and during the game Nov. 16.

While both Jonathan Alvis, director of athletic bands at USD, and Jim Coull, director of athletic bands at SDSU, called the two bands similar, there are some initial differences between the two marching bands.

The Sound of USD has 115 members and practices four times per week during game weeks. The Pride of the Dakotas has 200 members and practices Monday through Friday plus the mornings of game days.

Both directors said the content of each practice depends on what areas need polishing.

“It always depends on where we are in the show,” Alvis said.

“If we’re learning new music, then we’ll polish it so it’s perfect. We’re constantly adding to and adjusting our shows.”

Coull said he has his students work on whatever is needed, but they usually spend more time working on the music.

For both the Sound and the Pride, any student can join as long as they sign up for the marching band class and email either Alvis or Coull during the summer. Coull said there are auditions for the SDSU drum line and flag corps. Both schools require auditions for drum majors.

Music scholarships at USD and SDSU also work differently.

At USD, there are scholarships for talent, and are awarded by the music department that students can audition for, Alvis said.

If students are not on scholarship, they are awarded a marching band stipend.

At SDSU, there are no schol-

arships within the marching band, but anyone can audition for music scholarships, Coull said. Additionally, if a student marches all four years of college with the Pride, he or she receives a Pride scholarship for their final semester.

Neither band competes in any competitions, as they are both performance-only groups.

However, they both participate in numerous exhibitions in addition to football game performances throughout the marching band season.

The Sound have hosted a high school marching competition, where they are the exhibition band, and have been the exhibition band at two other high school competitions, in Chester, S.D., and Sioux City, Iowa, and have done a recruiting tour at high schools on their way to and from an away football game. They will close their year with an inside concert Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Aalfs Auditorium in Slagle Hall.

The Pride also were the exhibition band at a high school marching competition this year, and in the last several years, have been the exhibition band at the Festival of Bands and the Youth and America Competition in Minneapolis, Minn. Coull said the marching band also plays at a high school football game as a recruitment tool.

“They’re both top-notch bands,” Alvis said. “I have a lot of respect for the Pride. I’d say we’re pretty equal. They’re a little bit bigger, but we have the same goal in mind.”

Coull also said the Sound and the Pride are “very similar” bands.

“It was my first time seeing them under (Alvis) last year, but I noticed we have a more rock ‘n’ roll style, simply because we played more pop tunes,” Coull said. “They’re both good bands.”

Just like the bands themselves, the members of each

band have their similarities and their differences.

SDSU first-year Courtney Andersen plays the clarinet for the Pride.

“I joined the marching band because I had heard so many good things about them,” Andersen said. “Marching band was something I had all throughout high school, so I can’t imagine not having it in college.”

Andersen said the Pride has become like a family for her.

“The camaraderie we have is my favorite part,” she said.

Andersen is most looking forward to the atmosphere of the USD-SDSU football game.

“It’ll be a really good game,” she said. “Everyone is just so passionate about it.”

USD junior Sam Schroeder is currently one of the Sound’s drum majors.

“My freshman year, we went to London, and I really wanted to go, so I joined the band,” Schroeder said. “Then I just

stuck with it because I liked it so much.”

Schroeder said he auditioned for drum major to gain more experience for his future as a music teacher.

“I really wanted the experience of another conducting style, and the experience of this kind of leadership position is so valuable since some day I’ll be in front of a class every day,” he said.

Schroeder said his favorite part of marching band is seeing each show come together on the field after all the work the band has put in preparing for it. As for the USD-SDSU game, Schroeder’s focus is on the two bands.

“I’m looking forward to having both bands be at the Dome,” he said. “They’re a great representation of South Dakota’s two largest public universities, and I can’t wait to hear their band.”

Holiday blogger hopes to inspire others by volunteering Josie Flatgard The Volante

During the holiday season, senior Nadia Tronick is refocusing her end of the year festivities from gift shopping to volunteer work.

Tronick, who is majoring in journalism and minoring in political science and speech communications, is going against the grain with her seasonal blog as she decided to commit 12 days during the holiday months of November and December to do volunteer work. She calls it “12 Days of a Helping Hand.”

Instead of her regular blog documenting her holiday cooking, she has decided to commit 12 days during the holiday months of November and December to volunteer. She is calling it, “12 Days of a Helping Hand.”

“Everyone always has excuses for the holidays: ‘Oh, I didn’t get around to it, oh this is the busiest time,’ so it’s a good goal and a good thing to do,” Tronick said.

From Colorado, Tronick said she would be doing most of her volunteer work there. She said there are many shelters and food banks she will be involved with.

One organization she is excit-

ed to help with is The Crossing, where she would provide enough money for a family to buy a llama in a different country.

The 12 days will not be consecutive. Tronick said when she goes home over Thanksgiving break, she would be able to cross three or four days off the list, followed by finishing the rest over winter break.

Tronick said her family will be participating in the events with her. She said it has been driven into her that a way to spend her time was to help people in need.

“I think that time is more valuable than a check,” Tronick said.

Tronick said she has a personal blog which she describes as her “everything blog.”

In addition, she has done a couple different countdowns. In 2012, Tronick baked something new every day for 25 days in December to celebrate the holidays.

She also had a blog featuring a Valentine’s Day countdown.

While the previous countdowns are on different sites, Tronick said she is working to get them integrated into a single blog.

Morgan Lunz, a close friend of

Tronick’s, said she thinks doing this in a blog is a good idea.

“A lot of people our age don’t do blogs and it’s a unique way for Nadia to portray herself,” Lunz said.

Lunz hopes people will see the importance of blogging, and can see a lot of girls appreciating Tronick’s with craft ideas and recipes she has tried out.

Tronick said she does not volunteer to benefit herself, but believes even the smallest things count.

“I’m doing it because I truly just like to help people in any way I can, definitely during the holidays when it’s needed,” Tronick said.

She said she hopes her blog will be an inspiration for others to volunteer, as she is one of numerous people on campus who lead a busy life. Tronick’s older sister, Shannon Mihaly, can attest to this.

“She’s a busy student, it being her last year of college, with a full work load and an internship, but it shows a lot that with her free time she wants to do something more than kicking back,”Mihaly said.

She said Nadia has volunteered at a week-long camp for

kids with special needs in the past, and has seen that as a reason to give back.

She said although it is hard not living near each other, she

plans to volunteer alongside her sister to assist in fulfilling her blog’s goal.

When the pair is home for Thanksgiving break, she said

they plan to run a race for charity, exercising for a good cause.

Sci-fi novel comes to life John Dailey

Sophomore sentiments: Netflix causes both excitement and distractions

What does it take to win? That is a question the science fiction movie “Ender’s Game” innovatively answers.

The main star of the film is one of England’s rising stars, Asa Butterfield. He is no longer the child from “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” or BBC’s “Merlin.” He has now become a teenager gifted with innovative gaming strategies to help save mankind.

And it is this genius that made him the underdog from the start, a believable and realistic move. With strong and believable acting, he is the film’s greatest highlight.

But I must say I am disappointed in what I found with the character played

by Harrison Ford. I was expecting him to be Butterfield’s wise mentor, but what I got instead was a drill sergeant with only four words to describe him: ambitious, stubborn, dictatorial and obsessive. Alongside him was a smaller role by Sir Ben Kingsley, who is not worth mentioning more than once.

In the film, both the story and the animation are solidly spectacular. It focuses greatly on the mindset of this brilliant young prodigy, as emphasized by the all-CG sequence of a “mind game,” where characters and settings inside an Xbox universe reflect the player’s psyche. My only question with the animation is why are we portraying the aliens as being a hierarchy run solely by a queen?

We have seen that sort of portrayal before with the xenomorphs in the alien franchise, with the borg in “Star Trek” and most recently, with Loki’s army in “The Avengers.” The one thing about the aliens that is not so cliche is we look at their methods both ways, whether it be an invasion or a means of defense.

All in all, “Ender’s Game” is a thrill to behold with a firm combination of breathtaking animation and a very deep story. Butterfield seems to have true potential here.

One night after a long shift at work, I sat down on my futon and opened up my computer. Not wanting to go to bed, I did what most col-

lege students do and flipped through Netflix looking at possible shows to watch.

Little did I know, Netflix had updated their shows and added new seasons to all of my favorite TV shows.

Obviously, I was excited and started watching right away.

I proceeded to stay up ridiculously late on a school night trying to finish an episode and ultimately was exhausted the next day. This was when I realized that I had a problem — my addiction to Netflix is making its way into

the classroom.

I am sure others relate, but as soon as I am done with a season, I can’t help but find out what happens next. Maybe it’s the excitement, or maybe it is a better alternative to homework — either way, it isn’t something that should be available to me when I have responsibilities, like writing a blog on deadline.

But, no matter, I know that I have to focus on school. If any other student is having this problem, they

should realize that although these shows and movies are now available to them, they can wait until they have free time, maybe a three-day weekend or they could hold off until winter break. We are students and our responsibilities consist largely of homework, no matter how unentertaining it is.

That night, I had spent a good two hours watching season six of “Gossip Girl,” the final season, before I realized that I do, in fact, work in the morning. Although I

should have stopped myself, I began clicking the “next” button and continued watching. Yes, I know what you are thinking, I did suffer the next day at work, exhausted and regretting the late night marathon.

I could have definitely used a couple more hours of sleep; my zombie eyes might have scared the customers.

The lesson was learned, I must save Netflix for when I actually have time, like say when I am done working for the weekend.

Electro-pop band puts the Midwest on the map Andrew Helland The Volante

Polica is the new Minneapolis band that stormed onto the scene last year with “Give You the Ghost,” which had the notable hits “Lay Your Cards Out” and “Wandering Star.”

Gaining a lot of praise for their electro-pop take on R&B, Poliça is back on the scene with second album “Shulamith.”

They’ve even received support from fellow Midwest music veteran and Bon Iver front man Justin Vernon, who said, “They’re the best band I’ve ever heard.” Sporting two drummers, bass, keyboard and vocals, Polica comes up with a wave of sound on “Shulamith.”

This is a nighttime record.

Listeners definitely have to be in the right mood to listen to the record, but by the end of “Shulamith,” listeners will feel relaxed.

Polica delivers a bunch of smooth gothic pop songs, and “Shulamith” is full of ambiance created from echoes and production effects. Polica’s new songs are so smooth that it is easy to get lost in a dreamy state while listening to them.

Each song is very reliant on the bass grooves, which are a signature feature of Polica.

Like the great bass grooves, vocals are a big focus throughout the tracks. The singer, Channy Leaneagh, gets the most out of her voice and uses it like an instrument. Leaneagh’s use of auto tune in this

context is something that will definitely draw people’s attention. Her product is very mellifluous and that adds to their ethereal sound. Even though the lyrics are harder to understand, it isn’t a deal breaker for this particular band.

Shulamith starts out strong with the song “Chain My Name.” It’s one of their faster songs and has a lot of energy. Their song “Tiff” features Polica super fan, Justin Vernon. The back and forth vocals between Justin and Channy sounds great, making “Tiff” one of their best songs yet.

Even though the record is named after feminist Shulamith Firestone, lyrics aren’t solely feministic but

rather focus on heartbreak with the ghastly swoons of “You’ve been mean to me” on “Vegas” and the lines “Don’t you see how weak I get/when I can grant your wish” on the toe tapper “Spilling Lines.”

It might take a couple of listens to get into this album, but

listeners will appreciate Polica for doing something smart and different. And Polica not only makes really cool songs, but also is putting the Midwest on the music map.
