Welcome to issue 31.

A/W fashion has always been my favourite season to shop for. Don’t get me wrong, I love the summer months, but for me, the highlight of A/W is the fashion! I think my excitement to shop for A/W came from when I shopped for my new school uniform after the summer Holidays. A new coat, bag, shoes and even pencil case. I was more excited about my new purchases than I was about going to school.

Clothing is a part of life in so many ways – it is our uniform and armour for each day, a way of defining our identity. Here at Voir, we work daily to provide you with the inspiration to empower you to take on the world while looking incredible!

This issue is filled with new season fashion inspiration; whether it be a heatwave, monsoon, or a cooler Autumn morning, we’ve got you covered. We’ve captured a fashion story all about how to inspire you on your journey in becoming the boss woman you are with our “She’s the Boss” editorial.

For our big fashion issue, it made complete sense to call fashion’s new muse and all-round cool girl, Mia Khalifa, to grace our cover! We captured a 15-page cover shoot to showcase some exciting new season fashion with Mia and sat down with the Beirut-born bombshell for an exclusive interview ahead of the release of her stunning jewellery brand, Sheytan.

Mia shares how difficult the road of entrepreneurship can be when launching a new brand and opens up about why she feels she has a responsibility to be transparent about her journey in the industry. We also discussed what true beauty really means to Mia and how therapy has really helped shape her life.

We have had lots of stars grace the cover of Voir, but none perhaps as down to earth as our girl, Mia Khalifa. The Beirut-born bombshell has had an enduring, almost decade long, career since she broke onto the scene in 2014 to a trial by fire - to say the least - of celebrity, and people have had something to say about it from the start… Social media sensation, persona non grata, sports commentator, outspoken activist, jewellery entrepreneur, and now fashion muse. At Voir, we like to find the truth out for ourselves, and the truth is we love Khalifa’s sincere energy, her individual style, and how emboldened by love she is.

Something must’ve been simmering in the cosmos on the day of our interview and shielded away from the Florida storms and London rain, we caught up with Mia ahead of the release of her jewellery line and transcended to the virtual realm to convene on everything fashion, self-love and even her philosophy on rocking rocks in your reticule.

There’s not been a fashion week recently you could go to without brushing shoulders with up-and-coming fashion it girl, Mia Khalifa, from Paris to Milan to London, but what started all the invites? ‘It was a snowball effect after the first one’, she tells us, ‘The first one came about simply from being a client at Offwhite… And after I told Sara [cofounder of Sheytan) that I had got the invitation and I was very confused about it, she explained to me how historically the fashion shows were for the clients. After that, she kind of asked me like, is this something you want to pursue? Because we can pursue it.’

Her breakout into the fashion scene has been a whirlwind without a doubt, and no less than ‘exhilarating’ by her own account, but who does a fashion icon in the making look up to? ‘Rihanna... She dresses up like whatever character she wants to be that day. She has so many different characters, and it’s unapologetic. I love it.’

As someone who’s survived being thrown to the wolves a few times in her career, Mia is a paragon of self-love and personal development to women and girls around the world, and she knows this: ‘there’s nothing I love more than when girls come up to me and say that they see themselves in me, but also nothing scares me more.

I feel like I have a responsibility to my younger self and to those girls to just be as transparent as possible about everything’ and, why is this so important to her? ‘Oh my God, because there are days when I don’t feel like that. And there’s been times in my life where I feel it’s really hindered my decision making... That’s why it’s so important to me’.

Khalifa defines beauty as: ‘Radiance. Beauty is like something you see in someone that that makes you want to nurture them and protect them, like, that’s real beauty.’ Beauty comes in many forms, that’s something we’ve always espoused at Voir, and whether inside out or outside in, beauty means something different to each and every one of us, but nurturing that inner beauty is something Mia promotes across the board, ‘I’ve never met anyone who genuinely loves themselves who makes decisions that would hurt others - hurt people, hurt people. People who don’t treat themselves with love, respect, acceptance and forgiveness usually aren’t willing to lend that to others’.

There are many ways someone might nurture their inner beauty, it’s certainly not a one size fits all solution, but Mia keeps on the path of growth through therapy, and connects it to self-love in her own way, ‘There was an entire year in my life where I was in therapy twice a week..., like, I don’t think you should stay with the same therapist forever. I think that there’s also different forms of therapy. So, the work really is never ending. And I love that, I love exploring it.‘

For Mia, personal accountability goes hand in hand with being decidedly herself, and even with the lure of personal invitation to the insider crowd, she must stay true to herself: ‘I empower myself by doing things that align with me. You mentioned how fortunate I’ve been to break into the fashion world, I was supposed to be in Paris right now, but I felt so wrong about going to the couture shows. I had my outfits picked and everything but the things that are happening in Paris right now... It felt pretty disgusting as a woman of Middle Eastern descent to be there celebrating opulence and something so gratuitous when Paris is literally on fire. That empowered me more than doing something frivolous, and it stirred up a really important conversation with people in my life about what’s important and what needs to be prioritised. That felt like a really empowering conversation, and it had nothing to do with body image or a man’.

Mia might be one of fashion’s current court princesses, but her own crown jewels are making a statement for themselves. Her brand, Sheytan, is selfdescribed as the ‘unapologetic, self-assured heroine in a world that measures our worth against the confines of ‘good girl’ behaviour.’ Sound familiar?

‘This is simply me making an excuse to create things that I would want to wear.’ Mia tells us, but the process hasn’t been easy, ‘I have been heavily involved in the design process, it’s literally me and her [Sara Burn] going to the factories, playing with chains, putting them against our skin, wrapping them around each other to see the fit, I have been so physically involved that it’s been borderline insufferable for the factories that we work with in Wales and Florence’.

Luckily, Mia’s had a helping hand in the form of former Virgil Abloh collaborator, friend and designer Sara Burn, ‘She’s literally my fairy godmother, but one that actually brings it to life. And the process has been so much fun. It’s been so cool to see someone literally bring your dreams to reality’.

Khalifa has had critics every step of the way, and the release of Sheytan is no different, but what does she have to say to the naysayers? ‘This isn’t just like an influencer putting their name on a brand, what we are building is something from scratch. We are self-funded. It’s really hard to articulate that, and I hope that it will be easier once we launch because the jewellery will speak for itself’.

People often wilfully confuse confidence for arrogance, but Mia has both her feet firmly rooted in the ground when it comes to reality ‘Know your limits and put the right people in place. You’re not an accountant, don’t do your own accounting. You’re not a social media manager, don’t manage your social media. You’re not a designer, don’t try to go in there and say no I can do this better than you, like, know your fucking limits. Be humble and put the right people in place and treat them right.’

Finally, we leave you with some words of wisdom on why you should adopt Mia’s purse rock philosophy that we think incapsulates what we love so much about her: ‘I’m a crazy rock lady. I got rocks in my pockets at all times. There’s something about a rock where like, even if it’s just a pebble, I know it’s taken thousands of years for it to smooth out. I really like feeling tiny on this planet. And grains of sand on the beach make me feel like that... crystals make me feel like that… because they are thousands and thousands of years old.'
