When times are tough and you are at your lowest, that is when you find true strength Find God and learn to love yourself inside and out Finding your purpose is a true journey that may last a lifetime. Learn to enjoy the journey, find peace, and find true happiness. Appreciate what you have and have gratitude

But understand that it is okay to feel emotional, sad, tired, and overwhelmed. Allow yourself to go through this and allow yourself the strength to let go and do the work to move forward You may not reach your goal as fast as you want but the minor steps you take mean the most. Appreciate the people you meet & the family you make. The experiences you have with your family cherish them and understand that blood doesn’t make you family and family doesn’t have to be blood for you to know who is for you.

Finally, I chose to be the Editor-in-Chief because Ms Whitney kept asking the class for someone to step up and take it I felt drawn to do it because I wanted to bring Ms. Whitney's goal to life. I wanted to push myself to ensure we get it done and get it done with style. I hope that you enjoy this publication My classmates and I have been very busy with school organizations, trying to graduate and find our path on our new journey. But, we wanted to leave the next generation with a token of what you can accomplish here at B-CU.

At the end of the day, the day has to end When you’re up against the wall, always choose love and lead with both your mind and soul With that being said, protect your mind and continue to keep yourself educated. As a Black American, knowledge is power. Our strength, love and confidence is our power and we never need to lose sight of our power. Peace & Love

Kofi Zulu is from Washington D C , and is a junior at Bethune-Cookman University He is a computer information systems major and the founder/CEO of AduKicks AduKicks is a shoe cleaning business that was created in 2021 Kofi started Adukicks his freshman year and his friend asked him to clean his shoes for him because he always kept his shoes clean. After that he figured he might as well turn it into a business, according to Kofi.

“If my friend never asked me to clean his shoes, I probably wouldn’t have started Audkicks,” Kofi says He chose the name “Adukicks” because Adu is his middle name and adding kicks to the end just made sense

What makes Adukicks unique is the marketing behind the business When Kofi first started marketing on Instagram he was just doing before and after pictures From there he decided to get into making instagram reels showing him cleaning the shoes. People were interested in how he would clean them so he made "How to clean shoes” tutorials. After he started doing tutorials his videos started going viral His first viral video had 30,000 views

As his business evolved, so did his marketing skills Recently Kofi started producing skits to promote Adukicks The skits showed someone ruining the shoes, looking for help and Kofi stepping in to save the day

Who is Adukicks?

@AduKicks Instagram

MAINTAINING ALONGTERMFRIENDSHIP

Forillustrationpurposesonly

It's simpler than ever to overlook the importance of genuine connections in our fast-paced, technologically advanced society. However, maintaining platonic connections isn't simply pleasant to have; it's crucial for our general welfare and mental health In the Bible, Proverbs 27: 9-10 says. “Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God's presence.”

Here are five ideas for maintaining friends:

2

1. Being Hospitable : Creating a comfortable atmosphere makes others feel accepted and at home is the essence of true friendship, whether you ' re catching up with an old friend or creating new ones. Smiling, maintaining eye contact, and posing questions to establish rapport are all brave ways to befriend someone. Matthew 25:35 says, ‘ For I was hungry, and you fed me.I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home ’ A small act of compassion goes a long way

4.

Act as the One to Invite:- Don't wait for friends to make arrangements for you. Invite your group to everything from casual get-togethers to exciting weekend excursions to show that you are the leader in maintaining a close-knit group. Putting oneself out there demonstrates your concern.

3. Make Yourself Vulnerable: Humility and vulnerability are necessary for deep connections. Never be scared to lower your guard, own up to your errors, and seek help when you need it. Fostering authenticity strengthens relationships. Mark 12:3031 says, ‘And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. ' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself ' No other commandment is greater than these ’Genuine friends embrace you for your entire self, imperfections included.

5.

Extend Your Circle : We are tempted to remain friends with someone we have known since we were young. However, being a purposeful friend never implies cutting someone off. Be hospitable and receptive to fresh viewpoints and personalities that could improve your life. Accept the variety of experiences and backgrounds that people have to contribute.

Be a Caring Person - Above all, showing someone you actually care about their life goes beyond casual chat to becoming an intentional friend. Remind them of important life milestones, support them through difficulties, and truly be there while you ' re with them Your relationship is important, as demonstrated by little, kind actions

Choosing to be a real friend is a daring act of resistance in a transactional society. You can build the type of deep relationships that most of us long for by going above and above, staying in touch frequently, and making the decision to invest in others. Confirming your reputation as the sort of buddy who always and truly shows up Deep connections are priceless and have an influence on many facets of life, but they need work to maintain.

Living in a dorm room can be both exciting and challenging, especially when it comes to making the most out of the limited space that is provided. KEEPIN’ IT CUTE AND COVERED: HOW TO MAKE DRESSING MODEST MORE FASHIONABLE

And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes - 1 Timothy 2:9

As someone who values dressing modestly, whether for cultural, religious or just personal reasons, the world of fast fashion can feel like a minefield sometimes So many of the trendy looks pushed by popular online retailers like Shein, Fashion Nova and Zaful seem to be all about showing as much skin as possible.

But that doesn't mean us modest queens have to miss out on being stylish! In fact, I'm all about normalizing the "less is more" vibe when it comes to fashion. Leaving a little (or a lot!) to the imagination can actually be so chic and confidence-boosting

If you know where to look on those sites and get a little creative with mixing and matching, you can absolutely curate some fire modest looks that are still totally on trend. As someone who lives for a good Shein or Nova haul, here are my personal tips for modest style wins while online shopping:

3 Define Your Waist

Don't think modest dressing means you have to hide your shape in a muumuu! Places like Nova have so many bodycon style maxi dresses and separates in stretchy ribbed knits that skim over your curves beautifully while still being comfy and covered. , “You could do a belt but you could also do like a simple half tuck especially if you’re wearing something loose at the bottom and at the top,” says Youtube Influencer Jasmine Ty in one of her videos Bodysuits with wide leg pants or midi skirts are another favorite modest combo that's flattering

1

Layer It Up

Dresses, skirts and tops that are a little too short or tight on their own? No problem - that's where layering becomes your best friend I love taking a strappy tank dress and throwing an oversized denim or lightweight jacket on top to cover up more. Or pairing shorter tops with trendy longline kimonos, capes or duster cardigans. Getting playful with proportions and textures makes even simple, covered up pieces look elevated.

2

Accesorize

Boldly

When you're keeping more covered up, accessories are key for amping up your outfit's wow factor. Fun patterned headscarves, oversized sunglasses, layers of necklaces and statement earrings instantly style up any look. And handbags or shoes with unique embellishments or prints can add a major pop of personality. Shein and Fashion Nova always have such cute affordable options!

INTRODUCING NEW POPULAR APP ON CAMPUS FIZZ

“Unveiling the Impact and Controversy of the Latest Social App”

In the bustling world of campus life, a new contender has emerged, captivating the attention and curiosity of students far and wide. Fizz, the latest social app sensation, has quickly become the talk of the town, sparking conversations and debates about its impact on social interactions, mental health, and anonymity

Student Perspectives: What is your perspective on the impact of Fizz on social interactions and mental health among students on campus?

Nanayaa Ali, a voice among many, emphasizes the duality of Fizz's impact, acknowledging both its potential for positivity and negativity. While instances of bullying are prevalent, acts of kindness also abound.

“However, dwelling solely on the negative aspects can lead to profound feelings of depression, particularly for those directly affected ” -Nanayaa Ali

JaQuan Sapp echoes this sentiment, highlighting the app's profound influence on mental health The anonymity it offers can alter perceptions of those around us, prompting individuals to view others through a different lens

“Fizz helped me by the allowing me to promote my organization that is own campus and bring attention to the things we have planned for the semester”

- JaQuan Sapp

Most Appealing Aspects of Fizz Compared to Other Platforms:

Mahogony Jules, a junior political science major, shares her perspective on what sets Fizz apart from traditional social platforms. She finds its resemblance to Twitter appealing, providing a space for students to express themselves authentically without fear of exposure. It allows individuals to showcase their true selves before engaging with others, fostering genuine interactions.

Most Appealing Aspects of Fizz Compared to Other Platforms:

“Personal accounts for people who actually want to reveal themselves! This will be a good implementation for app authenticity generation, and following this verified accounts to build legitimacy of individuals, however still allowing people who wish to remain anonymous do so.”Mahogony Jules

As Fizz continues to gain momentum on campus, it remains a subject of intrigue and debate. While some praise its ability to foster genuine connections and self-expression, others raise concerns about its potential pitfalls. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: Fizz has left an indelible mark on campus life, sparking important conversations about the intersection of technology, identity, and well-being.

Brooklyn Pitre’s Trifecta

1 School Year and 3 Crowns for this Tennessee Native

Brooklyn Pitre is from Memphis, Tennessee. Brooklyn says she came to B-CU because she received a full academic scholarship, and she wanted to experience something different than Tennessee. She was recently elected Miss Bethune-Cookman University for the 2024-2025 academic school year. Prior to that she was crowned Miss Sphinxman by the brothers of The Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity on campus. More over, she was named Miss Homecoming in fall of 2023.

“I was very nervous when I was campaigning, not only because I had amazing opponents,” Brooklyn says, “but because being Miss B-CU is more than just about you as an individual It’s about the student body as a collective and I ultimately felt like God called me and equipped me with all the tools I needed to serve as one of my schools leaders ” She says she didn’t know how things were going to play out but had faith in God She chose the Princess and the Frog as her campaign theme because she felt as though she and Princess Tiana had a lot of things in common

“ We were both born in the South, we love to cook and have aspirations of being a chef and having our own restaurant,” Brooklyn says. “And we both knew what it felt like to work hard for something after being discouraged by the world around you.”

Her platform, Brooklyn says, will be raising awareness of the importance of mental health in African American communities.

Inspired by the iconic Miami Vice aesthetic, the Mary’s Choice Awards highlighted the incredible talents of our university's students From the graceful moves of the Royal Elite Dolls to the soulful sounds of Meraki Love, YGG BullDawg-Thomas, and ImJay, each performance left an indelible mark on the audience

The Marching Wildcats, accompanied by the Caged Cats and the dynamic beats of Sudden Impact, brought the house down with their infectious energy, while the 14 Karat Gold Dancers captivated the crowd with their dazzling choreography. Special guest appearances from Jackie THEE Vocalist, QueenKayeMusic, and the vibrant Junkanoo ensemble added an extra layer of excitement and cultural richness to the evening.

But what truly stood out to me was the students themselves, who became part of the spectacle with their flashy outfits that perfectly captured the essence of Miami Vice From neon hues to bold patterns, each ensemble was a testament to the creativity and vibrancy of the MCA community

PawsandPlay:EssentialTips For New Puppy Owners

In the world of life’s adventures, few experiences rival the joy of bringing home a new puppy From their boundless energy to their unwavering loyalty, puppies have a unique way of brightening our lives However, along with their boundless joy, the journey of raising a puppy comes with it’s challenges and responsibilities. For the uninitiated, navigating these waters can seem daunting. But fear not, for with the right guidance and a bit of patience, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Here are some essential tips to help new puppy owners embark on this heartwarming journey:

1.Preparing the Home: Before bringing your furry friend home, it’s crucial to puppyproof your living space Remove any hazardous items like electrical cords, small objects that could swallowed, and toxic plants. Create a safe space for your puppy to retreat to when needed, complete with a cozy bed and some toys to entertain them.

3 Socialization: Yes, that right Know that early socialization is an Important tool in helping a puppy’s brain development and temperament. Introduce your puppy to a variety of people, environments, and other animal in a controlled and positive manner. This helps prevent fear and aggression issues down the line and fosters a well-rounded and confident dog

2.Establishing Routine: Dogs thrive on routine, so establishing a consistent schedule for feeing, walking, and playtime is key This not only helps your puppy settle into their new environment but also aids in housebreaking and behavior training.

4 Positive Re-enforcement: Training should always be based on using lots of rewards and positive reinforcement techniques. Reward good behavior with treats, praise, and affection, while gently redirecting all undesired behavior. Consistency and patience are key to effective training.

5 Health and Nutrition: Consult with your veterinarian to establish a proper vaccination schedule and discuss your puppy’s nutritional needs. Choose a high quality puppy food appropriate for their breed and size and avoid overfeeding to present obesity.

6 Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Puppies have boundless energy that needs to be channeled in constructive ways. Provide plenty of opportunities for physical exercise through daily walks, play sessions, and interactive toys. Such as putting treats in a knotted towel or blanket or a meal mat( smearing food on a mat and freezing it) It allows them to think about how they can lick the food off the mat. Additionally, engage your puppy’s mind with puzzle toys, raining sessions and new experiences to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

7.Patience and Understanding: Above all, remember that raising a puppy is a journey filled with ups and downs. Patience, understanding, and sense of humor will go a long way in navigating the inevitable challenges. Celebrate the small victories, learn from setback, and cherish the special bond that grows between you and your furry companion.

Eve‘s Bayou

"Eve’s Bayou," directed by Kasi Lemmons, is a masterpiece that not only captivates audiences with its mesmerizing storytelling but also delves deep into the rich tapestry of Black history and the mystical world of hoodoo.

Set in 1960s Louisiana, the film follows the Batiste family, whose lives are forever changed by a series of secrets, lies, and betrayals At its core, "Eve’s Bayou" is a poignant exploration of family dynamics, race, and the complexities of human nature

As we journey through the sultry bayou we are immersed in the vibrant culture of New Orleans where the echoes of African traditions intertwine with the legacy of slavery and the resilience of Black communities From the opulent Creole mansions to the humble cabins of the working class, every corner of the city tells a story of struggle, triumph, and survival

But it is the mystical elements of hoodoo that add an extra layer of intrigue to the film Rooted in African spiritual practices and infused with elements of Catholicism and Native American folklore, hoodoo serves as a powerful metaphor for the unseen forces that shape our lives Through the character of Elzora, the local hoodoo practitioner, we are introduced to a world where magic and reality blur, where the past haunts the present, and where redemption is always within reach

"Eve’s Bayou" is not just a movie; it is a journey through time and space, a meditation on the complexities of identity and the enduring power of love and forgiveness As we navigate the murky waters of the bayou alongside the Batiste family, we are reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the eternal quest for truth and redemption

In the end, "Eve’s Bayou" leaves us with more questions than answers, urging us to reflect on our own lives and the stories that shape us It is a film that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll, inviting us to explore the depths of our own souls and the mysteries of the world around us.

LeaveTheWorldBehind

The latest psychological thriller on Netflix, ‘Leave the World Behind”, has a compelling idea at first, but in the end, it leaves the audience with more questions than answers The film, which was directed by Sam Esmail and is based on the Rumaan Alam book centers on an affluent New York City family that takes a vacation escape to a lavish Airbnb house in a secluded location But when two strangers arrive and say there has been a mysterious "event" in the city, causing them to seek sanctuary, their peaceful retreat is shattered What follows is a gripping, slow-burning investigation of ethnic dynamics, class divisions, and the fear resulting from an unknown threat Leading the ensemble as the well-to-do married pair, Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke skillfully portray the complexities of their roles through subtle acting There is a sociological undertone added by the contrast between their affluent lifestyle and the strangers' more working-class origins

As it approaches its unclear conclusion, the movie sadly declines to offer any clear explanations, despite the setup creating a sense of unease and mistrust One expects some illuminating revelation as the story becomes more sinister, but it never materializes Rather, the narrative ends in a rather ambiguous way that will surely divide viewers Some people might find it admirable that Leave the World Behind doesn't give everything away viewing it more as a multi-layered analysis of dread than as a single catastrophic event On the other hand, some people could find the absence of a proper conclusion to be highly disappointing from a traditional narrative standpoint There are two types of ambiguity in art: the deliberate kind and the unintentional one

Esmail's direction contributes to the unsettling atmosphere by using dark music and images that heighten the tension However, in the absence of a significant resolution, the excruciating tension eventually seems pointless; we are ensnared in the familys nervous existential spiral without having a clear understanding of the precise subject matter of the spiral Leave the World Behind's attempt to challenge genre norms is commendable, but many viewers may find it excessively obscure due to its unwillingness to offer meaningful explanations It's a thought-provoking social satire that raises questions about privilege self-preservation and the chaos that remains after fear triumphs over reality But its passionate abstraction is as likely to provoke philosophical ruminating as to disappoint Some may see that conflicting execution as a fatal weakness in a thriller that is otherwise intriguing and masterfully performed

What can you do about toxic parents? Yes, there is help.

The journey into adulthood is a time of self-discovery, independence and forgoing one’s own path. However, for those who grew up with toxic parents, this transition can be fraught with emotional turmoil, lingering scars, and the daunting task of breaking free from destructive patterns. While the road to healing may be challenging, it is not insurmountable.

Through courage, self-awareness, and boundary-setting, individuals can reclaim their autonomy and build healthier relationships, even in the shadow of toxicity. Toxic parents can come in many forms, from those who are emotionally manipulative and controlling to those who are outright abusive. Regardless of the specific behaviors, the impact of growing up in such an environment can be profound and longlasting.

Children of toxic parents often internalize feelings of guilt, shame, and inadequacy, as well as struggle with issues such as low selfesteem, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, the patterns of dysfunction learned in childhood can carry over into adulthood, affecting one's relationships, career, and overall well-being.

The term “toxic parent” isn’t a medical term or a clearly defined concept. It was popularized many years ago in a book called “Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy and Reclaiming Your Life” written by Dr. Susan Forward, a therapist, bestselling author and former radio talk show host. She died in 2020.

Acknowledging the toxicity of a parent-child relationship is the first step toward healing According to psychologist Chivonna Childs and others, some common signs of toxic parenting include:

● Emotional manipulation and guilt- tripping

● Lack of boundaries and respect for individual autonomy

● Verbal,emotional, or physical abuse

● Unreasonable demands and expectations

● Withholding affection or conditional love

● Financial abuse

● Deflecting( to attack or blame another person rather than accepting criticism or blame for your own actions)

● Being over protective

● Putting excessive pressure on adult children

● Micromanaging

● Intense desire to provide a different childhood (for your children) from your own ( Helicopter parenting)

I“Any time you think a person is toxic, you look at their behavior Those traits can belong to our parents as well,” Childs said “Those are signs of toxic people Our parents are individuals, they’re people They just happen to be our parents, she writes in an articles at https://health clevelandclinic org/toxic-parenting-

Setting Boundaries:

Establishing boundaries is crucial for protecting one’s emotional and mental health in toxic relationships This may involve limiting contact with toxic parents, setting clear expectations for behavior, and enforcing boundaries . While it can be challenging to assert oneself, particularly in the face of resistance or backlash, prioritizing self-care and well-being is paramount.

Dr Daniel Hollar, professor and assistant dean in the College Nursing Health Sciences at Bethue-Cookman University, agreed Relationships with parents are very important, Hollar said in an interview.

“Your parents have a lot to do with how you interact with others,” says Hollar, who holds a doctorate degree in clinical psychology. “Having toxic parents can cause you to live in a bad environment This can affect your self esteem and even cause mental disorders Furthermore, he says, it can affect different relationships whether it’s friendships or relationships. He noted that it is important to set boundaries, set rules for communication, limit time , and get counseling or therapy.

Cultivating Healing and Growth:

Healing from the wounds of toxic parenting is a journey that requires patience, self-compassion, and a commitment to personal growth. Engaging in therapy or counseling can provide a safe space to explore and process difficult emotions, gain insight into past experiences, and develop healthier coping mechanisms Additionally, practicing self-care activities such as mindfulness, journaling, and creative expression can foster self-discovery and resilience

Let’s get out of the habit of telling people, “That’s still your mom, your dad, or your sister.” Toxic is toxic. You are allowed to walk away from people that constantly hurt you.

Breaking the Cycle:

Possibly the most profound act of healing for the adult children of toxic parents is breaking the cycle of dysfunction and creating a legacy of love, compassion, and resilience for future generations. By fostering healthy relationships, practicing empathy and understanding, and prioritizing emotional honesty and authenticity, individuals can rewrite the narrative of their lives and pave the way for a brighter, more fulfilling future, researchers say

In the end, while the scars of toxic parenting may run deep, they do not define one's worth or determine one’s destiny. With courage, determination, and a commitment to self-love and healing, people can transcend the pain of the past and embrace the boundless possibilities of the present

Mastering the College Juggling Act: Tips for Balancing Academics,

Activities, Community and Your Social Life

For many college students, the biggest challenge isn't acing exams or writing research papers - it's simply trying to manage their time effectively Between classes, study sessions, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, community involvement and attempting to maintain some semblance of a social life, it's all too easy for undergrads to become overwhelmed by their packed schedules. However, achieving the right balance is crucial for both academic success and mental wellbeing on campus. Utilizing time management tools and strategies, as well as setting aside time for prayer, reflection, community-building, and cultivating friendships with like-minded, motivated peers can help students stay on top of their many commitments

Make Your Schedule Visual

One of the simplest yet most effective tactics is to get a large wall calendar or planning board and map out your weekly schedule in a visible way Seeing everything laid out visuallyclass times, work shifts, club meetings, community service events, etc. - allows you to identify your busiest periods and also visually allocate time for other priorities like exercise, errands, social activities and prayer.

Eliminate Distractions During Study Sessions

In the age of social media and digital diversions, one of the biggest drains on students' time is getting sidetracked during attempts to study or complete assignments Combat this by implementing strict "no phone" policies during set study hours Leaving phones in another room, setting them face-down, listening to instrumental music and using website blockers can boost productivity.

Batch Schedule Tasks and Activities

Instead of splitting focus between multiple tasks throughout each day, concentrate similar activities into bigger dedicated blocks of scheduled time This tends to be more efficient and allows you to gain momentum on related work Set aside chunks to exclusively tackle assignments for certain classes, then have another block dedicated just to extracurricular work, community service or other responsibilities Nursing Program student Charn’e McEwan said, “Nursing school is very demanding so I personally had to put my future first and focus more on my career. I had to sacrifice certain things and become comfortable with being uncomfortable for this temporary time in school. But I can say if you want something you can get it as long as you put your mind to it, whether you’re in nursing school or not I learned time management is key and it’s ok the say “no” sometimes “

Schedule Prayer, Reflection, Community and Motivating Friendships

In addition to secular work, it's important for students to allocate time for prayer, meditation, personal reflection, community involvement and nurturing friendships with peers who have similar motivation and goals In the Bible, Philippians 4: 6-7 states, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Whether it's attending a weekly worship service, working on group projects with driven study partners, community volunteer work, setting aside 20 minutes each morning for devotional reading, or taking a weekend retreat, prioritizing spiritual health, supportive connections and being part of an uplifting community can provide rejuvenation.

Dont Forget "YOU" Time

While it may seem counterintuitive when you have a mountain of work, scheduling breaks for leisure and social activities is vital for your mental health and avoiding burnout Make sure to schedule buffer times to relax, see friends or simply decompress away from obligations

At the end of the day, finding that sweet spot of a balanced schedule is a constant work in progress for most college students The key is utilizing time management tools and carving out dedicated times for work, prayer/reflection, community involvement, motivating friendships and play. Don't be afraid to re-evaluate and reshuffle your commitments as needed to maintain your sanity
