SPAC students shine at president’s gala

Staff Report Students from the McClaney School of Performing Arts and Communication added extra zing to this year’s Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy Awards Gala.

Member of the concert chorale entertained the audience with several numbers while members of the theater department captivated the audience with narrated selections.

The students performed before more than 800 guests, who paid $125 each, to attend the event at the Ocean Center on Oct. 19. The event raised $5.2 million for the university, including $1 million from Wayne Davis and $4 million from Darnell Dailey. The college raised about half that sum in 2014 for the same event. Figures for last year were not available. continued on page 3

Clinton offers millennials best hope

By Petra Merrick Voice Editor The 2016 presidential election is just two weeks away. Time is winding down and picking a candidate has become very crucial.

It is time for the American people to make their voices heard! That is why I am supporting Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States of America and I think you should, too.

Supporting Hillary Clinton is a no-brainer, in my opinion, compared to her opponent Donald Trump.

she has had experience within the political world in the past and she helped usher in changes and created new programs that help everyday citizens.

The Republican nominee Donald Trump, on the other hand, has made numerous racist statements and does not have an efficient platform for presidency. He has based his presidential platform,

so it seems, solely on border control. He wants to send immigrants back to their own countries, and, oh yeah, reports about Hillary’s email account.

The latter has yet to yield anything monumental but the GOP keeps pugging away at them.

Clinton’s platform, on the other hand, calls for working to provide racial justice, making college debt free, having a fair tax system, stopping gun violence, Autism, women’s rights, poverty, job wages and the list continues.

On November 8, we as a student body and as a community must come together and use our rights that our ancestors have fought against. Let us not give Donald Trump a chance.

B-CU is the best university in Daytona Beach, Florida. Some say that students that attend historically black universities and colleges are at a disadvantage.

I must disagree. As a graduating senior from B-CU, I have learned many life lessons. Yes, Daytona State

and the University of Central Florida offer the same undergraduate programs as B-CU. It’s really about what you do in class no matter what school you attend.

But for a young African college student, Bethune-Cookman University offered so many different opportunities to grow and learn.

The college experience prepares you for the next chapter in your life. My college experience has taught me to have faith.

“Overall, I thought the exhibits especially the School of Communications with the live statue, and other schools were very informative as to what the schools were offering in their programs for students. Great festive occasion otherwise,” said Henson-Governor, who is a faculty member in the school of religion.

Besides raising funds, the annual black-tie affair recognized five award recipients: Sen. Arthenia L. Joyner; Dr. Nelson Adams; Dr. Jacob F. Bryan, IV; Orlando Ashford; and Rufus Wilson. These leaders were recognized for their dedication and continuous contribution to education and the community.

Joyner is an attorney and the first African American woman to hold the position of The Florida Senate Democratic Leader for the 2014-2016 term. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Meanwhile, community philanthropist and B-CU trustee Bryan received the Philanthropy Award.

University president Dr. Edison O. Jackson also paid tribute to the memory of James E. Huger Sr. a B-CU icon and community activist, who died recently at the age of 101.

Adams is a B-CU trustee. He also is an obstetrician and gynecologist who has delivered more than 4,000 babies. He received the Humanitarian Award.

Wilson, a B-CU alum and member of the trustee board, received the Beacon of Light Award.

The Leadership Award was presented to Ashford, president and chief executive officer of Holland America Line.

B-CU radio station is now home to Sheryl Underwood Show Staff Report B-CU’s radio station WRWS-LPFM 99.1 is now home to the nationally syndicated “The Sheryl Underwood Radio Show.”

The show airs weekdays, Monday through Friday from 7a.m. to 10 a.m. Listeners can expect commentary on national and entertainment news, music, comedy, and historically black college and university (HBCU) segments.

“The show will greatly impact our community of Daytona Beach by giving our listeners discussions on relevant topics that pertain to their everyday lives and music to get them started on their day, rather it be at the job or school,” said assistant program director and show producer Marvin Nelson II. The radio show will provide opportunities for students to become “Sheryl Underwood Radio Show” reporters, in which the student will discuss university news from their campus and the segment will be aired on all of the affiliate stations around the country. Stipends will be given for this opportunity.

“Student staff at 99.1 will gain valuable radio experience by serving as morning show hosts and local show producers with the radio show,” Nelson said in a release.

Officials said that every morning Sheryl Underwood will recognize an HBCU by giving the listeners a brief history and facts about the school, which she has previously mentioned B-CU in her broadcast.

Nelson said listeners also can also expect to hear about HBCU Greek life as Sheryl Underwood has a strong connection with greek letter organizations and is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Biketoberfest 2016 rolled into Daytona Beach less than a week after Hurricane Matthew pounded the area on Oct. 7. The thousands of bikers that came found fewer hotels rooms but a warm welcome throughout the city.

Movie Review: When The Bough Breaks

By Charla McCord The mystery/drama “When the Bough Breaks” hit theaters in September and if your lucky enough to be in a community where it is still playing, go check it out.

The film is about a married couple, John (played by Morris Chestnut) and Laura Taylor (Regina Hall), who both want a child.

Laura, however, is unable to conceive and they are running out of options.

Desperate to have a baby, they hire a young, beautiful surrogate named Anna (Jaz Sinclair) to carry their last embryo to bear them a child. As time goes by, and the pregnancy goes along, Anna develops a craze for John, making seductive moves every chance she gets.

Soon, the couple find themselves in a battle between bringing down a psychopathic surrogate without bringing any harm to their unborn child. I won’t spoil the ending here.

Jon Cassar, who is probably better known for his work on the television miniseries “The Kennedys” and “24,” directed the movie. The film is based on the mystery novel written by Johnathan Kellerman that was published in 1985.

Made for $10 million, the movie’s box office came in at $22.7 million.

Remembering my ‘Good Times’ with Esther Rolle

By Aijah Rolle Many people know Esther Rolle as the actress who portrayed Florida Evans on two CBS television shows in the 1970s—the sitcom “Maude” for two seasons and it’s spin off series “Good Times” for five seasons.

My relationship with her, however, goes beyond a television family to my real family. My great-great grandmother Rosetta Lee Rolle and Ester’s great-great grandmother were sisters and that made us cousins.

Esther Elizabeth Rolle was born in Pompano Beach, Florida to Bahamian immigrants Jonothan Rolle and Elizabeth Iris Rolle. Her parents were both born and raised in Nassau, The Bahamas. They moved to Florida some time after their marriage, according to the stories passed down by my father Alfred Rolle III. Cousin Esther was the tenth of 18 children.

She graduated from Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach and she even attended Spelman College in Atlanta before moving to New York. There she attended Hunter College and eventually transferred to Yale University.

For many years she worked in New York City’s garment district, dad says, while struggling to break into theater.

He says that she took me to the Bahamas with her for a week when I was only 3 years old. The only thing I remember about being with her was that she was very sweet, never seemed upset and always had a smile on her face.

Remembering the good times of my beloved cousin Esther Rolle that I so dearly cherish helps me remember the legacy she left.

My dad also says her favorite dish was conch soup, a Bahamian favorite.

Being a relative of a star is pretty awesome. When I tell people she’s my cousin they get so amazed and surprised. Sometimes it even makes me happy that people even still remember her. Her television series “ Good Times” still airs on television.

My grandfather Alfred Rolle and cousin Esther were very close. He also told me she was very outgoing and determined about anything she put her mind to. “Esther Rolle always made a way,” he would say.

My cousin Esther died Nov.17, 1998, from complications of diabetes. She was 78. She was living in California at the time. Her body was flown back to her hometown of Pompano Beach for her funeral and burial. The family requested that any flower donations be sent to such organizations in including Bethune-Cookman University.

A taste of B-CU’s Homecoming 2016 ‘Returning to our Roots’

By Charla McCord Bethune Cookman University kicked off the beginning of homecoming events on Oct. 22 with a homecoming eve bash in the president’s banquet hall.

The next day spirits were lifted at the gospel explosion in the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center featuring gospel recording artist Kierra Sheard.

7 NASCAR Drive for Diversity kicks off at Bethune-Cookman University

By Dominique Williams Sports Writer Bethune-Cookman University provided the kick-off for the 2016 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Driver Combine, sponsored by Honda Generator.

The combine, a multifaceted tryout for scholarships in stock car racing’s premier driver development program, took place Oct.17-19, at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway. The program attracts promising ethnically diverse and female drivers from across North and South America to test their skills over a three-day period as NASCAR evaluates talent for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Class of 2017.

Seventeen drivers from across the country are competing for spots in the top driver development program in motorsports. This year, there are 13 female drivers competing for spots.

I had a sit down interview with one of the most talented athletes of this combine, Hannah Newhouse, who’s actually the only female who’s a student athlete at Boise State University, on scholarship to compete as a Motorsport Athlete.

Newhouse, 19, said she has always been passionate about racing after driving a go-kart for the first time at the age of five. Since then, she has gone onto competing in multiple championships across America, claiming a number of victories on her way to becoming a member of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program.

Away from racing, Newhouse is set to be a junior at Boise State University in her home state of Idaho where she has combined her studies with racing. Newhouse said the support given from Boise State University has been crucial over the last two years in helping her achieve her dream of becoming an elite driver within NASCAR. So, how did she manage to get a full scholarship from the univer-

sity since the NCAA does not considered motorsports as a sport?

Newhouse said she was joking with her brother about whether or not she should see if there was a possibility that the university might have scholarship money. “I went ahead to see what my agent would say about it and it actually turned out to be a great plan,” she said, adding having Boise State sponsors her while she is enrolled there makes her no different from any other athlete.

She is the first student athlete and first NASCAR athlete to be on a full ride scholarship to compete in motorsports and attend school.

“Before Boise State, attending college and racing wasn’t an option for me. It has been a great way for me to be a large part of my university and represent such a great college on and off the track,” she said.

The combine, meanwhile, was originally scheduled for Oct 10-12 but was postponed because of Hurricane Matthew, which flooded the track.

Wildcat football struggles to find its footing

By Asia-Nicole Howell This year’s football season hasn’t been the best for the Wildcats, who were MEAC Champions last year. At one point the team was 0-5 in terms of wins.

A lot of the games this season have been close games while others have been routes.

It would be easy to kick them when they are down but in fairness perhaps we should hold off until the must win game, the Florida Classic against the Florida A&M Rattlers.

Meanwhile, a random sampling of students found that they have their own ideas of what needs to happen.

“They need more work on defense,” freshman Zerdaisha Jones said.

Likewise, Keitha Dutherville said there is “Too much talent on the football team to have a bad record.”

Voter’s Bill of Rights Every registered voter has the following rights: 1. The right to vote if you are in line at the time the polls close. The polls close at 7. If you are in line, you must be allowed to vote!
