It is a well-known fact that Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune founded this school with little to nothing in her wallet but with a lot of faith in her ability to achieve a dream. Many students who attend today continue to hold the same core values that she instilled into this school when it opened more than 100 years ago.

Before our beloved founder passed away on May 18,1955, she made sure those same values and her drive to succeed in any field of human endeavor was a must for her, and the students who attend this magnificent university.

Therefore, our school motto “ Enter to Learn, and Depart to Serve” is more than just a catchy slogan. Students in the Department of Mass Communications see this everyday before we walk into the fine arts building to work. It is a constant reminder as to why we are here at this school working on this magazine publication.

I would like to thank the staff who worked diligently to bring to life the Fall 2021 magazine issue starting with managing editor Harmony Bienemy(photographed on page 15), who wrote more than one story for the publication.

Next, I want to acknowledge our chief social media specialist Sky Stephen (photographed on page 15), who has promoted the magazine on different social media platforms each year to gain a following for us. We will truly miss Sky as she graduates this fall.

I also would like to give a special thanks to all the photographers who helped bring this publication to life. Each photo that was taken by this year's photography group was stunning and it was a pleasure to really work with each of you. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors in our field of work and in life.

Also, I would like to thank our new adviser Prof.

Valerie Whitney and members of the Voice of Wildcats newspaper staff for contributing stories and sports photos to the magazine. Likewise, I would like to thank our department chair, Dr. Salvador Victor, for allowing this publication to still flourish in the wake of all that's going on with Covid-19. His predecessor Dr. Keith Hilton changed the name of the publication two years ago and it is still thriving and bringing exciting news for readers.

Goldlink’s production on ‘HARAM’ stands out Album Review

The “Crew” artist Goldlink released his fourth studio album this sum-

mer. Goldlink has dropped a lot of dance inspired music on his previous projects and this one was not that far off of his typical formula but what did stand out about this project was the production type.

The first chunk of tracks from “Extra Clip” to “White Walls” gave off a heavy trap feeling with his vocals being distorted and under the radar compared to the production. The content was surface level, and he wasn’t really saying anything that would be deemed to standout. His flow and the way he rhymed over those joints was smooth and coagulated. I can say the same for a lot of tracks on this project especially when the production style flipped and moved all over the place.

We started to receive some R&B influenced basslines overtime on tracks like “Spit on it,” which was a lot softer compared to the more aggressive first couple tracks. The only track that gave me a more reminiscent feeling of previous Goldlink work was “Evian” featuring PinkPantheress, Rizloski & Rax, simply because it was that dubstep dancing production that Goldlink has rhymed over in the past, so it made sense.

At this point of project, I didn’t know what direction we were going in with this album vocally wise because that distorted effect Goldlink had on voice started to get overbearing, but it went away on the track “Raindrops” featuring Flo Milli, which was a beautiful track. Goldlink’s lyrics still weren’t anything mind blowing, and it came off a little disappointing, but I personally don’t think that was a prime focus of this album. I think

Goldlink wanted a chance to showcase that he is versatile over different sounds and that he is fluid in accompanying other types of new artist and some people that you usually don’t see other artist collaborate with.

My favorite track was probably the last song “Cindy’s Daughter” featuring Bibi Bourelly. I loved the mood and the feeling of this track with the Slow Soulful instrumental and the chorus giving off a “I don’t care I’m relaxing” type of feel, it just made for a good closure to a pretty “out-the-box” type of album.

This album was only 36 minutes long, but it was so unorthodox and it all over the place that it made the length feel expanded, and that’s not a bad thing at all because I really like this project. This just may be my favorite Goldlink album. Also, the features added a lot of color and imaginative creativity to these songs.

I didn’t expect Rich the Kid to provide any good quality vocals, but he surprised me and actually made me enjoy the track “Twin” more. This was a good Summer project made for the mood of being out having fun and enjoying yourself. Everybody should definitely check this album out and get into discussion about what you thought of this album.

Fashion finds don’t have to break the bank

F ashion is a love language, a sense of

tranquility, a way of expressing oneself and more.

All of those traits can make one amazing outfit and even more, but can you really bring all of that to life if you have no budget? Even though some people in the fashion world make their own designs, it still requires money.

So, let’s discuss the importance of saving while shopping. We all want the most recent designer shoes, belts, hats, etc. But, what good will that do if you spend all of your money on those three products and have nothing left to spend?

I personally used to always want the best-looking clothes even though they were so expensive. But as I get older I am realizing that there are certain stores that can give me just as many clothes with the same design. As silly as this may sound, first a person has to

realize that they have a problem.

The problem can be rooted in such things as wanting to fit in with the trend, being stubborn and thinking everything cheap is not worthy, staying away from fake designers, or wanting to one-up yourself with every outfit.

Don’t get me wrong. Those are real life issues but sometimes shoppers and stylists need to have open minds.

There are definitely ways to still wear designer clothes while still having money left over. You could pick one designer item and then pair them with clothes from regular clothing stores.

Consider, for example, buying a pair of Maison Margiela boots and getting the rest of your outfit from SHEIN or ASOS. Fashion is limitless. Clothing accessories can come from anywhere and I do

mean anywhere. Places such as construction stores, athletic apparel, tool sections in stores and more can all give you items for a great outfit. Sure, there are people who think it is better to get everything from one store or one site because it is more likely to not have any issues. But, if you take bits from different stores, it’ll also help a lot.

So, there are plenty of ways to look just as good as a person who is dripped in designer clothes at the end of the day and you’ll have more money to do more shopping.

Remember there is a difference between having style and having taste!

Campus life rebounds from pandemic shut down

DAYTONA BEACH , FL. — Beginning in August 2020, students at Bethune-Cookman University were forced to adjust to living the college

Prior to these restrictions, certain dormitories were able to have Co-Ed visitations, campus events could hold more than 400 students and there was no set capacity level in the cafe.

These conditions were good up until March 2020 when Covid -19 spread massively across the globe. Students at Bethune-Cookman University, who were in the midst of spring break, had a rude awakening.

The rapid spread resulted in an extended 2-week break, which led to the rest of the semester being online and students coming back at the end of March to move out of

no events and limited capacity in the cafe.

Fast forward to November 2021, the campus is almost back to normal amid Covid-19. As well as in the dormitories due to them going back to two students per room and the return of co-ed visitation. There also has been many events on campus this semester including Homecoming, which have all been held by the Student Activities Board.

“This semester has been smooth so far as in the living arrangements and campus life, especially since we have a say-so as to what events can and cannot take place on campus,” says senior Hannah Lazarus, who is a member of the Student Activities

One report suggests that about 85 percent of the campus is vaccinated. Still there are those hesitant to get the vaccine.

“I am not interested in the Covid Vaccine because I am confused on whether it really works or not,” says Aijah Rolle, a junior. “And, I am just not sure f that is something I want to put into my body.”

For students majoring in mass com-

munications it is a given that our class work is not where most of the magic and experience happens. In fact, it is in the field, after hours and on our own time where we get the field time that we need.

Instructors do their best to impress upon students from the first day that we step into a classroom that networking is a skill that all mass communications students must learn. Professional seminar (PCA) is the class designed to teach us (1) to show up correctly because we will need to do just that in the real world, and (2) to showcase professionals in our selected fields for inspiration and opportunities. For a few semesters, as addressed in a later issue, students have questioned the importance of professional seminars.

It seems that our department heard our voice and took note. They adjusted the course to fit and meet our expectations as students. We have had more out of class time set in place to give us time to continue to work on our own tasks.

Also, the time that we are in class is filled with speakers who can speak to us in ways that we can grasp, but also that challenges us to think how a professional in our selected field would think. The new and improved professional seminar not only puts us in the presence of leaders who we can connect with for our own future endeavors, but also allows students to work and get experience. Whether it is getting up and speaking in front of peers, working the sound for the mics, or recording the seminar students are always at work in the mass communications department.

Whenever there were any issues going on with me or my family my grandmother was always there to support everyone. My grandmother grew up with nothing so I try to make sure that when I make it big I’ll give her everything. My grandmother deserves the world just like my mother, but my mother wouldn't have been here without my grandmother. The drive that my grandmother has is amazing, and it has definitely been engraved into my life.”

The reason why I chose her is because of how strong she is for my entire family. My mother is the glue for my family, she makes sure not only my brother and I are doing well and excelling at whatever we try to accomplish in life, she makes sure the family in general is doing well. One of the biggest accomplishments we got to share with each other was me joining the best fraternity in the world Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity inc. That day was so big because I finally got to accomplish a goal he set out to do before I was born, and once I joined the same fraternity as my father it was so much deeper than anything I ever did. My father is the glue for my family, and is constantly there for me in anything I want to do. My father means the world to me and I thank him for installing the values I live by today and in the future.

Jalia Johnson,Junior " My answer is no because I love my parents too much and another issue is that with nursing homes they are not really taking care of the person; making sure they are getting fed on a daily basis, washing them, making sure they are alright. Also, I feel that nursing homes equals old people living in a prison because they can't do anything besides being around other old people."

Chance Johnson,Sophomore "I think there are pros and cons to a nursing home, in that situation I would consider all the circumstances and the details about it because for some elderly folks it's better to have in-home care and stay within the family. In some situations it is better to have them in a nursing home. My mom when she gets old we're just going to take care of her in-home but if she needs to go to a nursing home, then I am not going to hesitate on doing so."

Mervia Soius, Senior "No I would not and I have two reasons for that. The first reason is that my parents have already requested not to put them in a nursing home because it is not in the culture and it is not something they are accustomed to or desire so I don't want to put them in a predicament that they don't want to be in. Secondly, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting my parents' health and condition in the hands of someone else. If I could afford to take care of them by myself then I would do it."

Film version of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ will disappoint stage viewers

By Jasmeen Rivera

Dear Evan Hansen, directed by Stephen Chbosky,

is a film based on the Tony and Grammy-winning musical about Evan Hansen, a high school senior with extreme social anxiety who goes on a journey of self-discovery after he gets involved in the life of a fellow classmate who has committed suicide. Chbosky is known for his previous work in the film “Perks of Being a Wallflower” and hit musical “Rent.”

The PG-rated movie debuted on Sept. 24, just a few days before the start of the National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month.

Running at two hours and 17 minutes, “Dear Evan Hansen” cost $28 million to produce while grossing only $15.7 million in box offices since its release. The film stars Ben Platt, who played “Evan Hansen” in the Broadway musical, as well, accompanied by lead actress Kaitlyn Dever. The film also features noticeable faces like Amy Adams, Julianne Moore and Amandla Stenberg, all of whom shine throughout the film as their characters grasp their own hidden realities that come to life in the wake of the student’s death.

However, though Chbosky is known for his emotional resonance in indie musicals and dramas, “Dear Evan Hansen” proves that some Broadway musicals should stay on stage and far from the big screen. Additionally, the film includes multiple touching, intimate songs originating from the Broadway production that steer you into an emotional train wreck with Platt as the conductor.

However, though beautiful, these songs were not enough to keep the film afloat. Moore and Adams demonstrated raw reenactments of distressed, grieving mothers, but the rest of the acting found itself to be surface level and superficial.

For how vividly grand the songs and performances seem to be with audio only, visually the film comes up short. While the music was tender-hearted and filled with raw emotion, the film in comparison was simply mediocre and did not meet the criteria with its lack of Mise en scene.

The scenes that were supposed to create the most emotional impact did not spark creativity and failed to get any message across to the audience.

Also, while Platt is known for his heartbreaking and uplifting performances, not only did the overabundance of CGI fail to make him look like an adolescent teenager, but in general made him seem like a creepy, full-grown adult roaming the halls of a high school.

And while I commend Chbosky for his attempt to make it a visual experience for everyone to enjoy, this film proves that no matter how badly you want something to work, not everything is meant to be.

In conclusion, if you want to experience a remarkable version of “Dear Evan Hansen,” then book a flight to New York City to see it on Broadway.
