A

fter what feels like countless heatwaves, Autumn's arrival comes as something of a relief.

Cooler days, pumpkin spiced lattes and an excuse to curl up under your favourite blanket with a good magazine all have their appeal.

Looking back over the past few months, RAF Wittering has certainly made the most of the summer. Families Day brought together Service personnel, families, friends and members of our local community for a fantastic day (page 16), while our Annual Formal Reception (page 18) provided an opportunity to thank the many organisations and partners whose support contributes so much to Station life.

We were also proud to welcome JCB back to RAF Wittering with (what has proved to be) the record-breaking JCB HYDROMAX, demonstrating the exciting potential of hydrogen technology. Full story on page 6.

Our personnel have continued to represent the Station at Armed Forces Day events across the region, celebrating the enduring connection between the Armed Forces and the communities we serve (see page 7).

As always, this issue is packed with stories that showcase the dedication, talent and community spirit that makes RAF Wittering such a special place. Thank you to everyone who has submitted.

Foreword As we move into autumn, this edition of Wittering View offers an opportunity to reflect on another remarkable period for RAF Wittering.

T

hroughout the summer, our personnel have continued to demonstrate the professionalism, commitment and community spirit that make this Station such a special place.

One of the highlights of recent months was the opportunity to celebrate Armed Forces Day alongside our local communities. Events across the region, including the Peterborough parade and the flag-raising ceremony in Leicester, provided a chance to recognise the contribution of our Armed Forces and strengthen the valuable relationships we enjoy with the community around us.

The strong connections were evident at our Annual Formal Reception, where we welcomed

civic leaders, partners and stakeholders to RAF Wittering to recognise the enduring importance of collaboration between the Station and the wider community.

This summer also saw RAF Wittering host the return of JCB, more than 20 years after the company's groundbreaking Dieselmax programme tested here on the airfield. Welcoming JCB back to Wittering as the Hydromax hydrogen-powered vehicle undertook further testing provided a fascinating reminder of the Station's long association with engineering excellence and innovation. It was fitting that a site with such a rich history of supporting aviation and technological development could once again play a part in

Closer to home, Families Day brought together serving personnel, civilian colleagues, veterans, families and friends for a fantastic day of activities and entertainment. Events such as these are only possible because of the dedication of volunteers, and I would like to thank everyone who helped make the day such a success. The positive feedback received is testament to their planning and hard work.

Looking after our people remains a priority, and I encourage you to read this edition's feature on the RAF Families Federation. As trusted advocates for RAF personnel and families, they play an important role in helping our people navigate the challenges of Service life and ensuring their experiences help shape positive change across the wider RAF community.

Finally, congratulations to our RAF Wittering football team on reaching the RAF Football Cup Final. While the result did not fall our way, reaching the final is a tremendous achievement and reflects the determination, resilience and team spirit that characterise our Station.

As you read through this edition, I hope you will share my pride in the achievements of our people. Thank you for everything you do to support RAF Wittering, our mission and our community.

Hydrogen Hero From Wittering Trials to a 406mph World Record RAF Wittering played a part in history this summer when JCB brought its revolutionary hydrogen-powered land speed car, Hydromax, to the Station for a series of UK trials before heading to the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA.

T

he visit marked a return to familiar territory for JCB. In 2006, the company tested the record-breaking Dieselmax at RAF Wittering before it went on to achieve a world diesel land speed record of 350.092mph, a benchmark that still stands today. Almost 20 years later, the Staffordshire engineering giant returned with a new challenge: proving the potential of hydrogen power at the highest level.

At the heart of the project was Hydromax, a 32-foot streamliner powered by two productionbased JCB hydrogen combustion engines. Originally designed to produce around 74hp for construction equipment, the engines were extensively

developed to deliver up to 800hp each, giving the sleek machine a combined output of 1,600bhp.

Behind the wheel was former RAF pilot and ex-RAF Wittering Operations Commander Wing Commander Andy Green OBE, famously the first and only person to break the sound barrier on land.

Green previously drove Dieselmax to its world record in 2006 and returned once again to lead JCB's latest attempt to showcase British engineering excellence.

RAF Wittering provided a secure environment for the testing activity, enabling station personnel to see cutting-edge hydrogen technology up close.

The visit also supported wider conversations around innovation, sustainability and the future role of hydrogen-powered technologies. A dedicated engagement session allowed personnel to hear directly from Andy Green and members of the engineering team about the challenges of developing a world-record vehicle.

When Hydromax left Wittering, the target was clear: exceed 350mph and establish a new hydrogen-powered land speed record. The team achieved far more than that. At Bonneville in August, Andy Green recorded an official speed of 406.320mph,

setting a new world record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle and surpassing the previous record by more than 100mph. The achievement demonstrated not only the potential of hydrogen combustion technology but

also the strength of British engineering and innovation.

Wing Commander Joan Ochuodho, Station Commander RAF Wittering, said: "RAF Wittering was proud to play a small part in a remarkable engineering achievement. From the first test runs on Station to a world-record performance at Bonneville, the Hydromax project demonstrated what's possible when innovation, expertise and ambition come together. We're delighted to see Wing Commander Andy Green and the JCB team achieve such an outstanding result."

Armed Forces Day Celebrations Across the Region

RAF Wittering personnel proudly took part in Armed Forces Day celebrations across the region, joining the city's parade in Peterborough and supporting ceremonial events in Leicestershire to recognise the contribution of the Armed Forces community.

H

undreds of people lined the streets of Peterborough as Service personnel, veterans and cadets came together for the city's Armed Forces Day parade. RAF personnel marched alongside Air Force and Army Cadets, receiving a warm welcome from spectators who turned out in large numbers to show their support and appreciation.

The event highlighted the strong connection between the Armed Forces and the local community, with residents, families and visitors creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the city centre.

The Station Commander, Wing Commander Joan Ochuodho, was among those attending the celebrations in Peterborough and thanked the community for their continued support.

Earlier in the week, the Station Commander also attended the Armed Forces Flag Raising Service at County Hall, Glenfield

in Leicester. The ceremony marked the start of Armed Forces Week and brought together representatives from across the military, civic leaders and local organisations to recognise the dedication and service of Armed Forces personnel, veterans, reservists and cadets.

Speaking after the events, the Station Commander said: "Armed Forces Day and Armed Forces Week provide an important opportunity to recognise the commitment and sacrifice of those who serve, past and present. It was wonderful to see such strong support from our local communities in both Peterborough and Leicestershire.

The appreciation shown by the public means a great deal to our personnel and their families."

Armed Forces Day takes place annually to celebrate and acknowledge the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, reservists, veterans, cadets and Service families.

From Belgium To Ghana: Serving With Pride Led by Drum Major Flight Sergeant Page, the Band performed for DSACEUR and invited guests in honour of the King’s Birthday Celebrations.

by RAF musicians beyond the concert stage.

he Band of the Royal Air Force College travelled to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) in June, to support two prestigious engagements at NATO’s Allied Command Operations headquarters in Belgium. The visit saw the Band perform in support of the King's Birthday Celebrations reception before entertaining the international SHAPE community at the annual BritFête celebration, with various ensembles demonstrating the

versatility and professionalism of RAF Music Services.

A varied programme of popular music entertained service personnel, families and international guests at the BritFête.

Europe (DSACEUR), during the King's Birthday Reception.

Performing in temperatures approaching 38°C, the musicians delivered a polished ceremonial programme for senior military leaders, dignitaries and invited guests which included a complex marching display, as well as incidental music from the Brass Quinet and Saxophone Quartet.

The following day provided a complete contrast as the Band exchanged ceremonial music for an energetic programme of popular favourites at SHAPE's annual BritFête. Families, service personnel and members of the multinational community enjoyed live music throughout the event, helping create a welcoming atmosphere and highlighting the ability of RAF musicians to perform across a wide range of styles and occasions.

Reflecting on the visit, Director of Music Flight Lieutenant Hynd said:

"Fulfilling the engagements at SHAPE was a real honour for our musicians who performed to the highest standards during challenging conditions, once again demonstrating the resilience and fortitude of Royal Air Force personnel. Supporting DSACEUR and engaging with NATO counterparts is always a privilege, but seeing the guests enjoy our performances so much was a real highlight."

The visit once again demonstrated the value of military music in strengthening international relationships, supporting ceremonial occasions and engaging with service communities overseas. For the musicians involved, the visit to SHAPE was both professionally rewarding and personally memorable, proudly showcasing RAF Music Services on the international stage.

FEATURE TOP HONOURS

The Multipurpose Indigenous Knowledge Development Centre in Sakpe will be used to educate adults in farming and improve life for generations to come.

EXERCISE SAMARA TENAX Under the flag of TrueNorth Trust and alongside members of 99 Squadron, RAF Basketball and friends, RAF Musician AS1 Gatenby travelled to the Northern Region of Ghana to build an education centre in the small village of Sakpe.

The purpose of this project was to build an everlasting memorial to colleague and friend, AS1(T) Sam Odotei, who sadly died on duty in January 2025. This project reflects Sam’s Ghanaian heritage and his core values of helping others.

During the Ex, the team took time away from the building site to visit the main village and the Paramount Chief who presides over 19 territories within Ghana. From the locals and the Chief, they learned much about Ghanaian culture, including education, traditional roles of men and women in society, and the history of the Northern Region. While most of the team were on the building site, small groups would rotate teaching English at the local school to all the children of the village.

Multiple football games were played; RAF representatives versus the local Sakpe team, and despite losing, the RAF continued to foster valuable relations through team spirit. AS1 Gatenby had the privilege of playing the national anthems of both Ghana and the UK on trumpet before the matches, while all the players respectfully stood in a line, just like a FIFA World Cup game, except these games didn’t end in a 0-0 draw! The locals had never seen or heard a trumpet played live before, and their reaction to it was one of pure joy.

The local community were so thankful and presented every member of the crew with a homemade traditional Ghanaian smock and hat to show their appreciation. They also put on a festival on the last day which consisted of multiple musical ensembles and a huge amount of dancing. It was the perfect way to end the Exercise.

AS1 Gatenby said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be a part of this project and especially because it is in memory of my friend, Sam Odotei.”

The team received traditional Ghanaian smocks and hats as a token of the community's gratitude.

Cadets Compete for Top Honours at RAF Wittering RAF Wittering welcomed some of the best Royal Air Force sections from Combined Cadet Force contingents across the UK as the Station hosted the prestigious Royal Air Squadron Trophy (RAST) Finals in June.

Widely regarded as the highest accolade that a Combined Cadet Force RAF Section can achieve, the annual competition saw 11 schools arrive at RAF Wittering after successfully progressing through regional heats. Teams travelled from across the country to compete for the coveted title and showcase the skills, teamwork and leadership that define the RAF Cadet experience.

Throughout the day, cadets faced a series of demanding challenges designed to test their knowledge and abilities across a broad spectrum of subjects. Competition stands included Space, Cyber, Shooting, Drill, First Aid and a Command Task. The First Aid scenario proved particularly memorable, combining realistic casualty simulations, sound effects and dramatic performances from volunteers to create a highly immersive test of the cadets' responses under pressure.

After a closely contested day, Loughborough Grammar School emerged as the overall winner, securing the Royal Air Squadron Trophy for the third consecutive year. King's School, Worcester claimed second place, narrowly edging Reading School into third.

Flt Lt Joanne, Officer Commanding Loughborough Grammar School's CCF(RAF) Section, was delighted by her team's achievement.

"With the cadets having just finished their A Levels and GCSEs

it shows such determination by the team, especially as today was the first time that we got all the team together and then to win for the third year in a row!"

The team was led by Cadet Warrant Officer Samuel, who is preparing to begin his studies at Oxford University and was taking part in one of his final major cadet events.

"This is our third consecutive win at RAST and it's safe to say a real pleasure to go out of my CCF career like this. The team was fantastic and I am so proud of them all."

The event was organised by Sqn Ldr Catherine, RAST Project Officer at Headquarters Air Cadets, who praised both the competitors and the support provided by RAF Wittering.

"We have had 11 schools here today at RAF Wittering and they have all performed absolutely amazingly. I must thank all those at RAF Wittering for allowing the competition to take place here."

Prize presentations were made by the Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Al Lewis, who was impressed by the exceptionally high standards on display.

He said: "While I have been going around, I have seen some fantastic school preparations and the standard of the drill competition was absolutely top draw. I extend my thanks to RAF Wittering for hosting us again this year and to the staff of the Air Cadet Training Facility here on the Station."

The successful hosting of the RAST Finals once again demonstrated RAF Wittering's enduring support to the RAF Air Cadet organisation, providing a fitting venue for the country's top CCF(RAF) sections to compete at the highest level.

News In Brief Wittering's Cup Dream Ended

by Late Leeming Comeback RAF Wittering narrowly missed out on the Keith Christie Trophy in a dramatic RAF Football Cup Final.

A superb first-half performance saw RAF Wittering take a commanding 2-0 lead into the break, thanks to goals from Harry Nicholls and Jake Smith.

With one hand seemingly on the trophy, Wittering looked in control against a determined RAF Leeming side.

However, the second half told a different story. RAF Leeming mounted an impressive comeback, pulling a goal back before increasing

the pressure as the match entered its closing stages. A late penalty completed the turnaround, giving Leeming a 3-2 victory and securing the Keith Christie Trophy for the first time since 2006.

Despite the result, RAF Wittering can take great pride in their performance throughout the competition and in a hardfought final that showcased the quality, determination and resilience of both teams.

Congratulations to RAF Leeming on their victory and to RAF Wittering for an outstanding cup run and a memorable final.

Capturing a

Royal Occasion Visual Communicator AS1 Eleanor from RAF Wittering was in London to capture the King’s Birthday Flypast, marking His Majesty The King’s Official Birthday. The spectacular display featured 31 Royal Air Force aircraft flying over the capital in a showcase of air power, precision and heritage.

One Marathon.

A gruelling marathon challenge that tested both body and mind was completed by personnel from RAF Wittering's 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron (2MT Sqn), all in support of a cause close to many hearts.

In August, a team of 10 personnel completed Op IRON PUSH, pushing a 152.5kg sled over the full marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres. After more than eight hours of continuous effort, encouragement and determination, the team crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 8 hours, 17 minutes and 18 seconds.

The aim of the challenge was to raise awareness of mental health and support

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a charity dedicated to preventing suicide and helping people through life's most difficult moments.

The team was supported along the way by friends, family members, colleagues and members of the wider RAF Wittering community who made donations, offered messages of encouragement and practical support throughout the build-up and on the day itself.

The original fundraising target for Op IRON PUSH was £2,000.

However, thanks to the generosity of supporters, the team had raised over £4,000 for CALM at the time of going to press, significantly exceeding their goal.

Donations will enable CALM to provide life-saving support and encourage conversations around mental health.

Bringing

RAF Careers to Life

for Local Pupils

Karting Challenge for Wittering Corporal Cpl Jonathon, based at RAF Wittering with 5001 Squadron, part of Support Force, represented the Royal Air Force in this year's Armed Forces Karting Championship.

Competing against Service personnel from across Defence at circuits nationwide, he took part in a series of races designed to test speed, skill and consistency while promoting personal development and competitive spirit.

Wittering Teams Shine at RAF Logistics Football Tournament RAF Wittering personnel represented the station at the RAF Logistics Profession Football Tournament in July.

Competing alongside teams from across the RAF logistics community, the competition, which was held at Stamford, is designed to promote teamwork, cohesion and sporting excellence.

The tournament brings together personnel from around 15 RAF units, providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships across the profession while competing for the title of RAF Logistics Champions.

RAF Wittering was represented by teams from 1 Expeditionary Logistics Squadron (1ELS), 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron

RAF Wittering personnel helped inspire the next generation when they took part in a Careers Day at Wittering Primary School, giving pupils a hands-on insight into life and careers within the Royal Air Force.

Members of the Station’s Mechanical Transport (MT) section and medical team visited the school with a military truck and ambulance, allowing children to explore the vehicles up close and learn more about the roles carried out by RAF personnel. From discovering how MT supports operations around the world to hearing how RAF medics provide vital care in a variety of environments, pupils were given a unique glimpse into life in uniform.

The event formed part of the school’s wider Careers Day, which brought together a variety of organisations and professionals from across the local area.

Alongside RAF Wittering, pupils met representatives from Anglian Water, Sacrewell Farm, a musician from RockSteady, and a local zoo keeper, providing a broad range of career pathways for children to explore.

Children rotated between activity stations throughout

the morning, speaking directly with visitors about their jobs, asking questions and taking part in practical activities. The opportunity to climb aboard RAF vehicles and meet serving personnel proved particularly popular, helping to bring careers in the RAF to life and encouraging pupils to think about the many opportunities available within the Service.

Following the sessions, pupils were encouraged to reflect on what they had learned by recording their future aspirations and discussing the careers that had inspired them most.

Jessica Potter from Wittering Primary School said: “A massive thank you goes out to all of our visitors for dedicating their time to engage with our students throughout the morning. The children thoroughly enjoyed visiting each table in the hall.

They had the opportunity to explore the truck, learn about the medics’ roles, and even play some instruments. Afterwards, the students designed leaf prints and wrote down their aspirations for what they want to be when they grow up. It was truly a delightful and inspiring day for everyone.”

A particularly poignant moment saw 3MCS present the Shaun Thomas Trophy in memory of AS1 Shaun Thomas. The trophy was presented by Officer Commanding 3MCS, Sqn Ldr Katie, to 1ELS after they secured the League B title.

Congratulations to 1ELS, 2MT and 3MCS for their outstanding efforts and for representing RAF Wittering with pride.

News In Brief Ex ARMY SUSTAINER 2026 RAF Wittering's catering professionals put their skills to the test at Exercise ARMY SUSTAINER 2026, competing alongside British Army, Defence and international counterparts in one of the military catering calendar's most prestigious events.

Held at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks and hosted by 167 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, Exercise ARMY SUSTAINER is the British Army's principal singleservice catering competition.

The annual event combines field catering and culinary arts challenges, providing a platform for military chefs to demonstrate their skills, share expertise and develop their professional capabilities in a demanding competitive environment.

Representing RAF Wittering, chefs from 3MCS and 504 Squadron competed across a range of challenges, showcasing the technical expertise, creativity and adaptability required of RAF caterers. Their participation highlighted the vital role military chefs play in sustaining personnel, whether operating from established locations or delivering catering support in deployed environments.

Exercise ARMY SUSTAINER also supports the development of skills essential to operational effectiveness, providing

competitors with opportunities to work alongside colleagues from other services and international partners while strengthening interoperability and sharing professional knowledge.

The team's efforts reflected the high standards, commitment and capability found within RAF Wittering's catering community and underlined the Station's contribution to Defence's wider warfighting readiness.

Congratulations to all personnel involved for representing RAF Wittering so successfully.

Feeding the

Front Line From feeding the front line to sharpening force protection skills, RAF Wittering's 3 Mobile Catering Squadron (3MCS) recently deployed to Beckingham Ranges for Exercise Hotshot Parmo 26, putting their readiness to the test in a realistic field environment.

The exercise saw 3MCS deliver a full deployed catering capability while also undertaking a force protection training package designed to sharpen operational skills and ensure personnel remain ready to support Defence tasks at short notice. Working in field conditions provided an opportunity to practise the challenges of operating away from permanent infrastructure, reflecting the environments in which mobile catering specialists may be required to deploy.

needed to operate effectively in demanding and dynamic environments. Alongside providing meals to deployed personnel, participants enhanced their understanding of force protection measures and the wider responsibilities that come with supporting operations in the field.

During the exercise, Commander Support Force, Group Captain Jon Smith, visited the deployment to meet personnel and observe training activity first-hand. The visit highlighted the importance of maintaining specialist skills across Support Force and ensuring personnel are ready to deploy whenever required.

Exercises such as Hotshot Parmo play a key role in preparing RAF personnel for operational commitments, ensuring that specialist units like 3MCS can continue to sustain personnel wherever they are needed while remaining adaptable, resilient and mission ready.

Air Officer Commanding No. 2 Group, Air Vice-Marshal John Lyle, visited RAF Wittering on a familiarisation visit to gain a greater understanding of the people and capabilities delivered by Support Force, part of Global Enablement.

During the visit, Air ViceMarshal Lyle met personnel from across the Airbase and

learned more about how RAF Wittering supports operations and exercises around the world.

The visit highlighted the wideranging capabilities generated

by Support Force and the vital role personnel play in delivering operational effect at pace.

The familiarisation visit provided an opportunity to showcase RAF Wittering's contribution to Global Enablement, demonstrating how its people, skills and capabilities support the Royal Air Force wherever it operates.

Food Hub Marks

First Anniversary of Supporting the Community RAF Wittering’s Station Commander, Wg Cdr Joan Ochuodho, joined local residents, volunteers and partners to celebrate the first anniversary of the Wittering branch of George’s Food Hub. Since opening in June 2025, the community initiative has been providing support to local families every Tuesday by redistributing surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.

Operating on a pay-as-you-feel basis, the Food Hub helps make food more accessible while reducing unnecessary waste.

The anniversary event recognised the dedication of the volunteers and partner organisations whose efforts

have helped make the project a success. Over the past year, the Food Hub has become a valued community resource, bringing people together while promoting sustainability and support for those who need it most.

Wg Cdr Ochuodho praised the commitment of everyone involved and the positive impact the Food Hub continues to have across the local area.

The initiative proudly lives by its simple but powerful message: “Feed bellies, not bins.” Through the efforts of its volunteers and supporters, George’s Food Hub is helping to strengthen the community while giving surplus food a second chance to make a difference.

100km for RAFA Ben Goes the Distance

RAF Wittering's Sgt Ben completed a gruelling 100km ultra challenge, raising vital funds for the Royal Air Forces Association while testing his physical and mental resilience to the limit.

W

hen the RAF Boxing Association announced its latest fundraising challenge in support of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), Sgt Ben of 2MT saw an opportunity to do something truly extraordinary.

The challenge was the South Coast Ultra Challenge, a demanding 100km route stretching across the South Downs from Eastbourne to Arundel. Despite admitting he had never considered himself a natural runner, Ben was inspired by endurance athletes who push themselves to extraordinary limits and decided it was time to tackle an item on his bucket list.

"I've never been a great runner," he said, "but I've always been interested in ultra-endurance events, so I jumped at the chance to raise money for a worthy cause while challenging myself."

Preparation began in March with a modest 5km run around RAF Wittering. Shortly afterwards, Ben deployed to the Falkland Islands, where he steadily increased his training over four months.

During the deployment, he completed his first marathons around Mount Pleasant and achieved his first ultra-distance run, covering 52km between Mount Pleasant Complex and Stanley.

On September 5, six members of the RAF Boxing Association

lined up at the start of the South Coast Ultra Challenge. Four participants tackled the 57km "first half" route, while Ben and one other competitor committed to the full 100km distance.

The team began together in Eastbourne under scorching conditions, making their way along the stunning South Downs coastline. Spirits remained high throughout the opening stages, and the group reached Brighton after completing the first 57km.

For Ben, however, the toughest part was still to come.

While the rest of the team recovered, he refuelled with a hot

meal, changed into a fresh pair of socks and prepared to head back out alone. Running through the darkness, with more than a marathon distance still ahead, the challenge became as much mental as physical.

"It was the most horrendous and yet most amazing experience," he reflected. "I had to dig deep and find out how much mental and physical resilience I really had."

After covering an incredible 103.5km and climbing 1,889 metres, equivalent to scaling Ben Nevis twice, Ben crossed the finish line in Arundel after 16 hours and 50 minutes. His achievement placed him 62nd overall, an impressive result for someone who had started the year with a 5km training run.

The RAF Boxing Association's fundraising effort has already

raised more than £2,500 for RAFA, with donations continuing to come in. The challenge not only recognised the association's ongoing support of RAF Boxing but also highlighted the determination, resilience and spirit of Service personnel willing to go the extra mile for a good cause.

Community in Harmony The Wittering Community Choir is inviting RAF personnel and families to join its growing membership as preparations begin for this year's Christmas Concert.

What started as a simple idea to bring together those who may be feeling isolated, new to the area or simply looking to meet people has grown into one of Wittering's most welcoming community groups.

Founded two years ago, the Wittering Community Choir has become a familiar face in the village, performing at local care homes and delivering popular Christmas concerts at St Andrew's Church. Along the way, it has created friendships, boosted confidence and brought people together through a shared love of music.

The choir prides itself on being open to everyone,

regardless of experience. There are no auditions, no expectations and no requirement to have sung before. Instead, members can expect a warm welcome, lots of encouragement and, of course, tea and biscuits.

With rehearsals for this year's Christmas Concert due to start shortly, now is the perfect time to get involved. The choir meets every Thursday at 6.30pm in Wittering Church and is keen to welcome new members from RAF Wittering, military families, village residents and the wider community.

Families Day Delivers

Fun in the Sun RAF Wittering's Families Day once again brought the Station community together for an afternoon and evening packed with fun, laughter and entertainment.

H

eld during one of the hottest days of the summer, the soaring temperatures did little to dampen spirits as people came together to enjoy the wide range of attractions on offer. Fairground rides, inflatables, face painting, caricatures, live music and community stalls ensured there was something for everyone, while exhibitors and local organisations helped create a vibrant festival atmosphere across the site.

A special guest for this year's event was professional mixed martial arts fighter Jordan "The Epidemic" Vucenic, who spent time meeting attendees throughout the day. Kaizen BJJ & MMA Club also drew plenty of attention with demonstrations showcasing the skill, discipline and athleticism of Brazilian JiuJitsu and mixed martial arts.

There was no shortage of friendly competition either. The LEGO competition attracted some impressive creations from younger attendees, with Charlie Jones taking top prize and winning a LEGO Groot set generously donated by Amey. Families also enjoyed a children's dancing competition, a "Guess the Word"

challenge and the chance to win a luxury hamper donated by Pinnacle with additional prizes provided by Amey.

One of the biggest highlights came when the RAF Falcons parachute display team took to the skies above Wittering.

Their stunning display of skill and precision captivated the crowd before the salute was taken by RAF Wittering Station Commander, Wing Commander Joan Ochuodho.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of the RAF Benevolent Fund, Babcock, SACX, VIVO and Marshall, whose sponsorship helped fund the attractions and entertainment enjoyed by families across the Station.

Emma Stacey, Project Officer for Families Day 2026, said: "Families Day is all about saying thank you to our personnel and the families who support them.

It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying themselves despite the heat. The feedback has been incredibly positive and that's down to the hard work of our volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors and everyone who helped make the day such a success."

Annual Formal Reception

At RAF Wittering Record temperatures did little to deter guests from attending RAF Wittering’s Annual Formal Reception in June, held in the Officers’ Mess as the UK experienced a spell of intense summer heat.

With temperatures climbing into the 30s, guests were encouraged to dress appropriately for the conditions, creating a more relaxed atmosphere while ensuring everyone remained cool and safe. The Annual Formal Reception provides an opportunity for meaningful engagement with RAF Wittering’s neighbours and members of the local civic community, with guests hosted by personnel from across the Station. A range of capability displays from Support Force also showcased the vital work undertaken in support of Defence operations and exercises worldwide.

Commander Joan Ochuodho, highlighted the continued support of the local community, civic partners and charitable organisations, recognising the vital role these relationships play in enabling the Station’s activity. She also emphasised the importance of RAF Wittering personnel within wider Defence, delivering critical support to operations and exercises around the world as part of Support Force.

If you’ve ever driven along St George’s Road just outside the wire, you may have passed the RAF Families Federation (RAF FF) without realising who we are or what we do.

A

s RAF Wittering’s 'neighbours', we’re proud to be part of this community, and to quietly support all RAF personnel, Regular and Reserves, whether single, married, in a long-term relationship (LTR), separated or bereaved, and their families every day.

The RAF Families Federation is an independent organisation that works to improve the lived experience of RAF personnel and their families. Funded by the RAF, we exist to look after the whole RAF ‘Family’. We do this by listening, advising and supporting the ‘Family’ with issues arising from service life that cannot be resolved through the appropriate channels. Whether it’s concerns about accommodation, childcare, healthcare, partner employment, or the challenges of mobility and deployment, we help address these issues where possible. We gather insight directly from the RAF community to develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of Service Life, ensure the correct application of the Armed Forces Covenant with local authorities and where appropriate pursue opportunities to influence policy change at the highest

levels of the MOD and UK Government.

Our team is small but highly committed. Each member brings a deep understanding of service life, enabling us to offer practical, informed support.

While we don’t replace the chain of command or welfare services, we provide an additional, confidential route, especially when individuals feel they need their voice heard more widely,

or when an issue affects multiple families.

We’re also grateful for the support and engagement of station leadership, past and present. Station Commander Wing Commander Joan Ochuodho is a strong advocate for the RAF Families Federation, recognising the value of listening and partnership. People and Families Officer Warrant Officer Neil Paylor is another long-time friend of the Fam Fed. Our relationship with WO Paylor, and the wider support team on station, allows us to better understand issues at Wittering.

That collaborative approach helps ensure that issues raised locally can contribute to meaningful, service-wide improvements.

Ultimately, our role is about turning lived experience into positive change. By helping solve people’s issues, and then by identifying trends, highlighting recurring concerns, and presenting evidence to decisionmakers and policymakers, we help shape better outcomes. Not just for

Summer of

Adventure

This summer, Airplay Wittering delivered an action-packed programme that gave young people the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills, make lasting friendships and create unforgettable memories.

T

he holidays began with an exciting three day residential at Condover Hall, where young people embraced new experiences, worked together as a team and grew in confidence and independence. The group took part in a range of adventurous activities, including aerial walks, where they tested their nerve high above the ground, kayaking, which encouraged teamwork

and resilience on the water and buggy building, where teams worked together to design, build and race their own creations.

There were also some highly competitive and energetic games of laser tag, which quickly became a favourite amongst the group. The days were filled with fun and laughter, with a fabulous karaoke session bringing out some hidden talents and providing plenty of memorable moments. Alongside the fantastic activities, the young people enjoyed amazing food throughout their stay, keeping everyone fuelled and ready for the next challenge. The residential was packed with friendship, achievement and fun, making it the perfect way to kick off the summer holidays.

Back at Airplay Wittering, the programme continued with two BBQ and music sessions that

brought everyone together to enjoy good food, great music and time with friends. Next a trip to Wicksteed Park provided thrills, laughter and opportunities for young people to build confidence while exploring the attractions and rides, some of the staff got wet on the log flume too!

Creativity flourished during our arts and crafts session, where participants expressed themselves through a variety of colourful projects, while our Food Fun session gave young people the chance to develop practical cooking skills and enjoy creating and eating tasty treats together.

Teamwork and problemsolving were put to the test during an exciting detective trail, with young people working together to solve clues before celebrating their success with a well-earned and delicious trip to Kaspa's.

We finished off the week with an exciting visit to Rutland Aqua Park, where everyone tackled inflatable obstacles with determination, resilience and plenty of enthusiasm.

One of the most memorable afternoons of the summer was the Summer Splash Water Fight. Filled with laughter, friendly competition and lots of water, it provided the perfect way to enjoy the warm weather and have fun together.

The programme concluded with an unforgettable visit to Slick City, which proved to be the perfect finale to an amazing summer. Young people enjoyed the excitement of the giant slides, racing their friends, testing their courage and embracing every thrill the venue had to offer.

The vibrant neon surroundings created an energetic party atmosphere, with music, laughter and excitement filling the air throughout the session. To make the celebration even more special, everyone enjoyed a well-deserved pizza party. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the friendships, achievements and experiences that had made the summer so successful.

While the activities themselves were hugely enjoyable, the real success of the programme was the growth shown by our young people.

Throughout the summer they demonstrated confidence, resilience, teamwork, inclusivity and kindness, while building friendships and creating memories that will stay with them long after the holidays have ended.

We’re looking forward to creating even more opportunities and adventures in the months ahead.

ar y Culin er Corn Looking for a warming meal this autumn? This creamy chicken, squash and sage traybake is packed with seasonal ingredients and makes an easy, delicious dinner for any day of the week.

Creamy Chicken, Squash and Sage Traybake Serves: Four Course: Main Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Ingredients 4 skinless chicken breasts 1 small butternut squash, peeled and cut into 2–3 cm cubes 500 g baby potatoes, halved 2 red onions, cut into wedges 2 eating apples, cored and cut into wedges 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp smoked paprika 10 fresh sage leaves, roughly chopped 200 ml chicken stock 150 ml double cream 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 100 g baby spinach Salt and black pepper

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan.

2. Place the butternut squash, potatoes and red onions in a large roasting tray. Add the olive oil, thyme, smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Toss everything together.

3. Roast the vegetables for 20 minutes, turning them halfway through.

4. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Remove the tray from the oven and place the chicken among the vegetables.

5. Add the apple wedges, garlic and chopped sage to the tray.

6. Mix the chicken stock, double cream and wholegrain mustard together in a jug.

Pour the mixture around the chicken and vegetables.

7. Return the tray to the oven and cook for another 20–25 minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender.

8. Stir the spinach through the hot sauce and vegetables. Leave it for two minutes until the spinach has wilted.

9. Check the seasoning, then serve the chicken with the roasted vegetables and creamy sauce.

1. What part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?

Making a positive difference to people is what I find most rewarding. Whether through mentoring, supporting others or helping individuals develop and succeed, I like creating an environment where people can thrive. While operational success is important, seeing people grow in confidence and achieve their goals, knowing I played a part in their journey, gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment.

2. And the least?

The part of my role that gives me the least satisfaction is when administrative processes, resource constraints, or bureaucracy delay outcomes for the people who need support. I take great pride in helping individuals, maintaining standards, and delivering operational effect, so it can be frustrating when factors outside my control prevent timely solutions or limit opportunities for others. However, I view these challenges as opportunities to influence positive change and improve outcomes for others.

3. What is the best advice you have ever received?

‘Be true to yourself’. This was from one of my previous WOs’ when I doubted myself many years ago.

This has stuck with me to this day and makes so much sense.

4. Describe yourself in six words?

Trusted, ambitious, influential, caring, motivator, driven.

5. What career would you have followed if you had not pursued your current profession?

I’d have been a professional footballer, guiding Morecambe FC to the Premier League and being an England all-time top goal scorer! But we will never know, as I followed my dream of being an MT Driver!

6. Is there one piece of criticism that sticks in your mind?

One piece of criticism that has always stayed with me came early

Seat in my career when a Sergeant told me I would never make Corporal.

Rather than discouraging me, it motivated me to prove otherwise.

More importantly, it taught me the type of leader I never wanted to become. The lack of support, mentorship and belief shown to me shaped my own leadership approach, reinforcing the importance of developing, encouraging and investing in others so they can reach their full potential.

7. What would be your first act as world leader?

My first act would be to tackle global poverty and homelessness.

I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, security and hope. By investing in people, empowering communities and ensuring access to life's necessities, we could create a more equitable world where individuals are able to reach their full potential.

8. Name your desert island essentials?

• Phone for podcasts • Water • Enough coffee to see me through • Family photos • Multi tool • Decent pillow • And a KitKat Chunky… because why not!!

9. How would you change the MOD? If I could change the MOD, I would place greater emphasis on empowering our people. The best ideas often come from those closest to the task, regardless of rank or position. By reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, encouraging innovation, and trusting people to make decisions, we would unlock greater potential across Defence.

My experience has shown that when people feel valued, trusted and listened to, they consistently deliver exceptional results.

10. What food would you choose for your last supper?

Meat and Potato Pie, Jumbo Sausage (not battered), mushy peas, chips, gravy – MUST be from a Northern Chip Shop!

Padre’s Corner 11. Who do you most admire in the world?

I admire the All Blacks Rugby Team because they combine excellence with humility.

Despite their success, they remain grounded, place the team above the individual and uphold the highest standards of discipline, accountability and respect. Their belief that no one is bigger than the team resonates with me, as does their commitment to honouring tradition, leading by example and leaving the jersey in a better place for the next generation. Those values of service, legacy and developing others are qualities I strive to emulate in my own leadership. I particularly like and embrace the "Sweep the sheds" mentality – senior players cleaning the changing rooms reinforces humility regardless of status or rank.

12. Name four people you would like as a dinner guest – and why?

• Partner Laura – She’s my greatest source of support and provides honest advice when I need it most.

• Rory Underwood – Growing up I played a lot of rugby; I used to study his movement on videos – childhood hero!

• Paul Gascoigne (Gazza) – an all-time England legend and some of the stories from his past crack me up!

• David Attenborough – he’s like the World’s Grandfather!

13. What one piece of music would you like played at your funeral?

I would like to be remembered not for the positions I held, but for the positive impact I had on people and the example I set through my service. I hope to be seen as a leader who cared about others, acted with integrity, upheld RAF values, and created opportunities for people to succeed. If those I worked with felt more confident, capable, and prepared because of my influence, that would be the legacy I would be most proud to leave behind.

The Seasons of Life As Autumn settles over RAF Wittering, the station takes on a different character.

M

ornings arrive with a sharper edge, mist hangs low across the airfield, and the trees along the perimeter begin to turn from green to gold and copper. Leaves drift across the roads and gather in quiet corners where people pass by on their way to work, often too busy to notice the change unfolding around them. Yet in these small, everyday signs of transition, we are reminded of a simple truth: life has seasons.

There are seasons when everything feels right. We are energised, confident and purposeful. Work goes well, relationships flourish, and the future feels full of possibility.

These are the seasons we naturally want to hold on to.

But life also brings harder seasons – times of uncertainty, disappointment, loss and change.

Sometimes we find ourselves in a season we did not choose and would rather not be in. A relationship shifts, a loved one struggles, work becomes difficult, or life simply does not unfold as we expected.

The temptation is to believe we should always be strong, always in control, always moving forward. Yet nature gently teaches us otherwise. The trees do not cling to their leaves forever.

Autumn is a season of letting go. Falling leaves are not a sign of failure, but part of life’s rhythm.

Letting go makes space for what comes next.

Perhaps there are things in our own lives we need to release: an old disappointment, a mistake we keep revisiting, unrealistic expectations, a changed relationship, or the belief that we must carry everything alone. It is also reassuring to remember that no season lasts forever.

A difficult season will pass.

Winter comes, but so does spring.

Darkness gives way to light. What we experience today is not all that will be.

Military life often makes these seasons more visible. We know what it is to arrive somewhere new, to leave friends behind, to deploy, to return, to start again, or to say goodbye. There are moments of excitement and moments of uncertainty – seasons of belonging and seasons of starting over.

And often, the person beside us is in a completely different season.

That is why kindness matters.

The colleague who seems quiet may be carrying more than we realise. The one who appears to have it all together may be struggling in silence. A simple conversation, a shared coffee, a smile, or asking “Are you alright?” can make a real difference.

As we move through Autumn, it may help to pause and reflect: • What season am I living in right now – and what is it teaching me?

• What am I holding onto that I need to gently let go of?

• Who around me might need quiet support, patience, or presence today?

Take a moment to notice not just where you are, but how you are.

And then take one small, honest step – whether that is reaching out, speaking up, or simply allowing yourself to be human in the season you are in.

Because Autumn is not only about endings. It is about preparation, quiet transformation, and the unseen work of renewal already taking place beneath the surface.

And whatever season you find yourself in today, hold onto this: you are not alone, you are not forgotten, and this is not the end of your story. Even now, hope is quietly on its way.

AGILE FEATHER

Keeping frontline aircraft flying under fire is a critical challenge for military engineers. How do they do it when battle damage strikes far from home?

E

xercise AGILE FEATHER put 71 (Inspection & Repair) Squadron's Battle Damage Repair (BDR) capability to the test in a tough, realistic environment, simulating the challenges of restoring aircraft availability during expeditionary operations.

The exercise focused on deploying personnel and equipment into an austere setting, where limited infrastructure, equipment constraints and tight time pressures are the norm. This scenario aimed to prepare engineers for the realities of operating away from a Main Operating Base (MOB).

At the heart of the exercise was a Hawk aircraft with simulated battle damage to its outer skin. Following tasking, the repair team had just 40 minutes to prepare for deployment. They loaded BDR equipment, tools and essential support stores before

moving to the Rogue Sale Field Training Area.

Once on site, surveyors conducted an initial damage assessment. A four-person repair team then planned and executed the structural repair. The task involved manufacturing and installing a metallic patch to restore the aircraft's damaged structure.

The engineers began by assessing the damage, preparing the affected area by removing damaged material and creating a clean repair boundary. Working mainly with non-powered hand tools, they fabricated a repair patch from sheet metal, carefully measuring, marking, cutting and shaping it to fit the aircraft's contour. Attachment points were drilled, deburred and prepared before the patch was secured with blind rivets. The repair was deemed suitable for a one-flightonly BDR recovery.

Beyond the technical achievement, Exercise AGILE

FEATHER delivered significant benefits to operational readiness.

It tested the Squadron's ability to rapidly generate, deploy and sustain a repair capability away from established facilities. The exercise also highlighted practical lessons related to tooling, transport, power generation and welfare support.

Engineers were challenged to solve problems independently, adapt to equipment failures and work effectively with limited resources, developing the resilience and decision-making skills essential for deployed operations.

The exercise also identified areas for future improvement, including enhanced deployable tooling, better use of the ISO container facility and improved

welfare equipment to support longer tasks. These lessons will directly inform future training and increase the Squadron's ability to conduct complex aircraft repairs in demanding environments.

Ultimately, Exercise AGILE FEATHER was more than a repair exercise. It was a vital readiness activity. By combining technical aircraft repair skills with expeditionary planning, deployment and sustainment, the exercise ensured that 71 (IR) Squadron continues to build the agile, adaptable engineering capability required to recover damaged aircraft and generate air power wherever operations demand.

Such exercises remain essential as operational environments grow ever more challenging.

FEATURE STATION CINEMA

Lights, Camera, Community!

The Station Cinema is one of RAF Wittering’s hidden gems, providing affordable entertainment, a welcoming community atmosphere and a valuable service for personnel, families, veterans and the wider Station community.

W

hether you are looking to enjoy a family outing or simply relax with the latest blockbuster, RAF Wittering Station Cinema offers a unique experience right on your doorstep.

Run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers made up of Service personnel, civil servants, dependants and veterans, the cinema has become a much-loved part of Station life. The volunteer team works hard behind the scenes to keep the cinema running and is always looking for new members to get involved. Volunteering can be undertaken as a secondary duty and comes with a few perks too, including free film admission for volunteers and their families.

The cinema screens five films each week, with evening showings at 1900hrs on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, alongside Saturday matinee and afternoon screenings at 1000hrs and 1400hrs. Ticket prices have been kept deliberately low at just £4 for adults and £2 for children, helping to ensure entertainment remains accessible to all.

Visitors can settle into comfortable sofas, bring their own refreshments or take advantage of the kiosk, creating a relaxed and friendly viewing experience. The cinema also boasts full air conditioning and heating, making it a welcoming venue throughout the year.

Supporting the broader RAF family is central to the cinema’s ethos. Cinema access is provided free of charge to deployed families for the duration of a loved one’s deployment, while veterans can enjoy a dedicated monthly Veterans Cinema Club. Membership is free, and anyone interested in joining is encouraged to get in touch.

The venue is also available for private hire, making it an ideal location for parties and special occasions.

The cinema team regularly organises special events and competitions. Recently, the cinema was selected by BFBS Studios to receive a range of official Supergirl merchandise. A drawing and colouring competition attracted some fantastic entries and, such was the quality of the submissions, every entrant

received a prize. Additional merchandise was awarded to two lucky attendees during the film’s premiere screening.

One of the highlights of the year is the ever-popular Christmas Eve showing, which has sold out annually. The event includes festive snacks and a puppet show, helping families create lasting Christmas memories together.

The monthly programme is displayed outside the cinema, shared via Teams and published on the RAF Wittering Station Cinema Facebook page. It is a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy a film with friends and family, all while supporting a volunteer-led community facility at the heart of RAF Wittering.

Support Olympic Ambitions Personnel from 71 (Inspection & Repair) Squadron (71 IR Sqn) have employed advanced HandySCAN 3D scanning technology to support Royal Air Force athlete and Winter Olympic skeleton competitor Flight Lieutenant Nicole Burger, demonstrating how cuttingedge engineering capabilities can contribute to elite sporting performance.

Using advanced HandySCAN 3D scanning technology, 71 (IR) Sqn engineers captured detailed images of Flt Lt Burger on her skeleton sled. The data will be used to analyse airflow and identify ways to improve aerodynamics, helping to enhance performance and reduce race times.

3D HandySCAN technology is routinely used by 71 (IR) Sqn for precision measurement tasks that help maintain aircraft airworthiness. In this project, the same expertise was applied to support elite sport, with detailed digital models enabling specialists to analyse airflow around both Flt Lt Burger and

her skeleton sled. The insights gained could help identify aerodynamic improvements to enhance performance and reduce race times, demonstrating the versatility of RAF engineering capabilities beyond the air environment.

Chief Technician Walkman from 71 (IR) Squadron said: “The aim is to transfer these 3D scan models into a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) program to see how the aerodynamics can be optimised with the overall goal of improving her run times.”

The 3D HandySCAN technology is normally used to support precision engineering and aircraft airworthiness. Its application in this project highlights how RAF engineering expertise can be adapted to support elite sporting performance, while also providing personnel with valuable opportunities to develop and broaden their skills. The knowledge gained through projects such as this can help inform future Defence engineering activities, demonstrating the versatility and innovation of RAF capabilities.
