611 SQN SET OUT RAF RESERVE OPPORTUNITIES AT SOUTHPORT AIRSHOW.
Flying Officer Jane Shepherd, Media Operations, 611 Squadron
Southport Airshow provided an eyecatching platform for members of 611 Squadron to promote opportunities in the RAF Reserves on its doorstep.
Personnel from the Sqn, which is based at RAF Woodvale in neighbouring Formby, spoke to visitors at the show about life in the Forces.
The team from 611, who were joined by the Northern Reserve Support Wing, had a constant flow of enquiries from people looking to explore the opportunity to work in rewarding and demanding roles alongside full-time Regular colleagues.
Based at RAF Woodvale, and with engineering facilities in Aintree, 611 Squadron draws in personnel from across the North West.
They train in air & space operations, intelligence, ground engineering, logistics, human resources and media, as well as chaplaincy services, to support the RAF in the UK and overseas on main bases and on operations.
Wing Commander Stephen Chaskin, Officer Commanding 611 Squadron, said: “With the RAF putting on an inspiring display at the event - including the Red Arrows, as well as the Typhoon, and Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane flypasts - Southport Airshow offered a superb opportunity

Welcome to Coningsby St Michael’s School!
We are delighted to confirm that the school has been graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted.
In June 2022 Coningsby St Michael’s had a full 2-day Ofsted inspection. Under the New Inspection Framework 2019 the process was very detailed and rigorous and we very pleased that all the hard work of the school community has been acknowledged through this inspection. Everyone in our school community played a vital role.
The school’s grading is ‘Good’, a benchmark that is high under the current Ofsted framework. We are very pleased that the hard work undertaken by all in the school community has been recognised, including the high quality of teaching and learning as well as our curriculum which is ‘broad and ambitious for all pupils.’
The report confirmed that the school is securely graded as ‘Good’. The Ofsted inspection was thorough, led diligently and was professionally undertaken. We were open and transparent around all aspects of school life and had much evidence to support the process. One child described our school as having a ‘special energy!’
The children are at the heart of every decision we make to ensure that they are happy, safe and that the opportunities provided for them are relevant to their needs both now and in the future. Their understanding of how to take care of each other and also knowing who to talk to in school if they have a worry or a problem, was written into the report. It was pleasing to see the polite and well-mannered behaviour of some of our youngest learners in EYFS recognised and how well prepared they are for KS1.
We welcome visits from prospective parents and pupils at any time during the school day, and look forward to seeing families at our open morning in November for pupils due to start school in September 2023. Please contact the school office if you would like to arrange a visit or ask any questions about our fantastic school.
The school has a dedicated team that works hard to reach high standards in everything we do and this is further embedded through our successful relationships with parents, the local community and the other schools in the Lincoln Anglican Academy Trust. Our Head of School is an Early Years and Phonics Specialist Teacher and our Assistant Head is a Maths Specialist Teacher. We are especially proud of the support the school provides for service families was highlighted as a strength in the report and although the wording didn’t quite make it into the report, during the discussions with the inspectors, they noted that this practice should be shared widely – this is what we are doing now.
This is our second year, of Forest School schools. The Forest School approach to teaching and learning is to nurture the skills children develop through their outdoor forest school lessons. Skills are developed over a sustained period of time and children are encouraged to take risks through challenging and meaningful activities, such as learning how to use tools and how to light a real fire safely for cooking outdoors. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our amazing Forest School leaders who have achieved the Level 3 Forest School qualification. This enables them to deliver exciting and creative lessons, whilst being fully trained in food hygiene and risk assessments for all equipment and activities undertaken. The core principles of the Forest School scheme focus on developing children’s skills in a holistic way. Children have lots of opportunities to explore the natural environment while also developing lifelong skills. As part of our desire to deliver a holistic approach to the curriculum we have some exciting developments in 2022/23 where we shall be encouraging more visitors into school, especially those with STEM backgrounds to help nurture and instill a passion for the Sciences and continue to support the areas in our Science Quality Mark 2021.
