Since assuming Command of RAF Northolt in August 25, there is one phrase that I repeatedly hear from personnel (both military and civilian) visiting the Station – I never realised just how much happens here. I know that feeling only too well, having embarked on a journey of understanding the complexity and strategic importance of the station. Meeting with 38 Resident Units, and understanding their own unique Ways of Working, is no simple task but it has been incredibly worthwhile especially as we start to review and map our role within the Transition to Conflict framework.

The world picture remains challenging: fighting in the Ukraine is ongoing, there is instability in the Middle East, the UK economic picture has still not recovered post the pandemic and the country is suffering from a prolonged

cost of living crisis. I know there are many issues and concerns which affect and impact on our personnel and, together, we are and will, ensure that we provide the best lived experience within our gift to do so.

Against this backdrop it is sometimes easy to feel doom and gloom about the world and our position in it.

However, I have witnessed how as Team Northolt we pull together – fundraising for charities, delivering small acts of kindness, raising awareness and reducing stigma all whilst ensuring the highest standards and output are maintained.

So, thank you for everything you have done and continue to do; I hope the Christmas period is positive and fulfilling and I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Welcome from the Editor

Sgt Ellen Driscoll at Northolt, covering a charity bake sale, the establishment of a new polytunnel, Christmas carolling, visits from a wide range of personnel and Force Development in Poland, to name just a few! The reflective aspect of this time of year is also captured, with the Ceremonial output of KCS and RAF Music featured alongside those who contributed to local remembrance events.

This year seems to have flown by, and the amazing energy of the people at RAF Northolt is reflected throughout the following pages. Activities on the station reflect the diverse interests and enterprising spirit

This will then allow more capacity for welfare/emergency cases with a potential to open our bookings to personnel outside of RAF Northolt. s 2025 ends it is time to reflect on a very busy year in the SFA patches.

There has been a marked improvement in reactive maintenance from our contractor, Vivo, who with their service partners are now providing a good service in reasonable timescales. On Tuesday 2 December, the People and Families Support Team hosted a party for local school children who took part in our RAF Northolt Christmas Card Challenge. Aspects of the 11 successful children’s designs were brought together to form our Station Christmas card

which was kindly produced by AS1 Chad Kenney No.1 AIDU. The children and schools were presented with a certificate and a Station Commander’s coin

by Gp Capt Lee Wales; a magic show followed and the event was rounded off with a light tea.

Taking Root at Northolt

The Wing Roots Polytunnel Project AS1 Florence Savage

Our brand-new RAF Northolt Polytunnel is nearing completion, and will offer allotment plots to personnel, families and the wider station community, generously supported by the RAF Benevolent Fund. What began as an unused patch of ground has, over the past few months, transformed into a dedicated community space offering opportunities for station personnel to access valuable gardening space and outdoor wellness activities.

After months of planning, teamwork and hands-on effort, Wing Roots is finally coming to life, ready to welcome the station community Spring 26. Turning the polytunnel into reality has quite literally been a labour of love, achieved through the hard work and dedication of the Wing Roots committee, station volunteers, RAF Northolt Fire Section, and support from the Vivo building team. This is just the start of a broader vision to develop

the surrounding land into outdoor allotments, an orchard, picnic area, along with a pumpkin patch and wildflower garden.

to grow, learn and unwind. To apply for a plot, if you haven’t already, please scan the QR code above and complete the sign-up form.

Allotments can provide a valuable sense of community, supporting both physical health and mental wellbeing. There are enormous benefits to sowing, weeding and nurturing plants, whilst also having the satisfaction of eating something you’ve grown yourself.

With the final touches being added now, the grand opening will take place on 25 March 2026. Plot holders who have already signed up will be able to plant their crops from February – more details to follow soon. There are currently 30 plots available ready for use with a further 30 to be built as required. Plots are allocated on a first come first served basis.

RAF Northolt demonstrates

International Support F Fg Off Lisa King

rom 16–18 September 2025, RAF Northolt showcased its ability to surge military operations, supporting the President of the United States

(POTUS) during his state visit to the UK. The visit included meetings with Their Majesties The King and Queen at Windsor Castle, alongside stops at Chequers and the US Embassy.

Drawing on its secure facilities and highly skilled personnel, the station managed this high-profile mission with efficiency and professionalism. Preparations involved close coordination with US partners, National Police Air Service (NPAS) and British military units to enforce enhanced security measures, manage airspace restrictions, and support visiting forces.

Operations commenced with advance teams conducting pre-tasking checks and surveys, ensuring Northolt’s readiness. The station hosted a variety of military aircraft, including Chinooks arriving in two formations with security teams and equipment; three Sea Kings in three C17s were re-built on site. Wildcats from the Royal Navy and NPAS provided guidance about UK air operations around London, additional security and emergency support.

Tactical Supply Wing (TSW) supplied critical fuel support, supplemented by a bowser borrowed from RAF Brize Norton.

RAF Northolt’s performance reaffirmed its capability to deliver complex military operations with professionalism and precision and the visit underscored Northolt’s ability to adapt and excel under unique operational demands.

The Christmas box tradition was first started in 1914 by 17-year-old Princess Mary, daughter of King George V, and saw approximately 2.6 million boxes gifted. The contents were a pack of cigarettes, pipe tobacco, a silver tipped bullet pencil plus a photo of, and Christmas message from, Princess Mary.

Operation Christmas Box started in 2005 in honour of this tradition and is a gift from the nation to all those serving in the UK Armed Forces on tours of duty overseas away from their families and loved ones on Christmas Day.

This year 8,200 Christmas boxes have been distributed by BFPO to 97 overseas destinations to UK forces on operations around the world.

Due to the work undertaken by the team, we have ensured the safe delivery of these essential moraleboosting gifts across the world.

David Goardou Head of French National Support Element On 18 November 2025 the French, Italian, Romanian and Turkish National Support Elements (NSE) were delighted to welcome the Station Commander, Group Captain Lee Wales, SO1 Strategic Communications and Engagement, Wing Commander Caroline Krolikowski and the Station Warrant Officer, WO Ben Moore, to their offices located behind Base Support Wing.

Composed exclusively of military officers and warrant officers, the NSE’s provide administrative, logistical and welfare support to their nation’s military forces serving NATO and stationed throughout the United Kingdom.

RAF Music Roundup

Remembrance and Community Engagement London Poppy Day, the flagship fundraising event of the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal, was held this year on 30th October with serving personnel, veterans and volunteers collecting donations at mainline and underground stations across the city, raising vital funds for the Poppy Appeal.

RAF Musicians from the Central Band of the Royal Air Force were in situ at Waterloo Station to perform their first set at 0730.

A mixture of traditional military music alongside popular classics saw commuters transiting the station concourse with smiles and a spring in their

step. Following this, a joint performance with the King’s Colour Squadron, providing the musical accompaniment to their Continual Drill Display, ensured the crowds lingered around to enjoy this spectacle and gave generously to the various collectors around the station. The Band was also delighted to be joined by Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth and Mrs Smyth who were in attendance supporting the collections.

After refreshments courtesy of the Union Jack Club, the Band performed further sets at peak times throughout the day and into the evening.

RAF Trumpeters play a vital role throughout the year frequently performing at Service memorials, funerals including those of veterans.

Over the Remembrance period, RAF Trumpeters from across the Whole Force sounded the Last Post and Reveille at various services around the UK and overseas - prior to football games at Stamford Bridge and Loftus Road, at Runnymede and Lincoln International Bomber Command memorials, and at the embassy in Vevey, Switzerland. This year’s Armistice Day video was filmed by the RAF Northolt Visual Communicator team at HM Tower of London and featured across RAF main social media channels.

The Lord Mayor’s Show is the oldest, longest and leastrehearsed civic procession in the world dating back to the early 13th Century, in which the newly elected Lord Mayor of London travels to Westminster to swear loyalty to the crown and take the salute at the Mansion House.

2025 saw the 697th Lord Mayor of London Dame Susan Langley DBE, as the third woman to hold the post and the first in history to hold the title of ‘Lady Mayor of London’.

The procession is slightly different every year reflecting history and changes in City life, but many traditions remain the same including marching military bands. The Band of the RAF College was proud again this year to take part and march the 3 miles route playing no less than 20 marches.

The Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance is held annually in the magnificent Royal Albert Hall in Kensington, London and broadcast on BBC1 and iPlayer the night before Remembrance Sunday.

In the presence of the Royal family, the show honours the service and sacrifice made by British and Commonwealth Armed Forces community with testimonies, storytelling and music performances.

An annual staple in the RAF Music calendar, RAF musicians were honoured as always to take part, with the RAF Squadronaires opening the show in an incredible performance with Sir Rod Stewart. A joint display and collaborative performance with the King’s Colour Squadron paid tribute to the Battle of Britain and the end of the Second World War.

The National Act of Remembrance is the Service held on Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, led by His Majesty The King.

RAF Musicians formed part of the tri-Service combined bands and the RAF Trumpeters sounded The Rouse as over 10,000 veterans marched past.

Later that evening, musicians from the Band of the RAF Regiment featured in the BBC Strictly Come Dancing Remembrance Special, performing the music for the group dance. Sam Fender’s ‘Remember My Name’ was specially arranged for the ensemble by Strictly’s ‘in-house’ musical director, Dave Arch.

These engagements highlight some of the poignant services, memorials and commemorative events at which the Nation reflects and remembers. A busy and meaningful time in our calendar, RAF Music proudly covered 35+ engagements over the Remembrance week.

CHRISTMAS CHEER AT HILLINGDON HOSPITAL On Friday 5th December, The Central Band of the Royal Air Force Brass Quintet visited Hillingdon Hospital to play Christmas Carols. This was a wonderful opportunity to engage with the wider community by performing to patients, staff and visitors across the site spreading some festive cheer.

Solicitor General Visit to Northolt John Foody

The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC MP, and her team visited RAF Northolt on 10 July 2025.

T

he Solicitor General is one of the UK government’s Law Officers, along with the Attorney General and the Advocate General. Part of the role of the Law Officers is to oversee the work of the UK’s prosecution services. This includes the Service Prosecuting Authority (SPA), headed by the Director of

Service Prosecutions, Jonathan Rees KC, whose headquarters are at RAF Northolt. After her visit to the SPA, the Solicitor General said: “It was a pleasure to meet with the SPA’s officials and prosecutors during a visit to SPA HQ at RAF Northolt.”

“I heard about the complex and sensitive cases which the SPA handles, and the variety of breadth of work involved in being an SPA prosecutor. I’m very grateful to everyone in the Authority for their continued dedication to important work which helps to ensure confidence and the highest standards in our Armed Forces.”

The visit started at the SPA where the Solicitor General had an opportunity to meet with the Director and others in the team, including several prosecutors. There was also an opportunity to observe the annual Royal Navy Acquaint, a week-long assessment that is part of the process of selecting officers to undertake training to become Royal Navy barristers.

Following lunch, the Solicitor General visited RAF Music Services, hosted by Flt Lt Parsons and Cpl Docherty. Along with a tour of the

building and hearing musicians undertaking assessments, the Solicitor General heard about the worldwide range of Defence Engagement events supported

by Music Services and how positively these were received.

The Solicitor General then moved on to visit the Fire Section where she met the duty crew and heard about the high level of training required for the role and the close working relationship with the London Fire Brigade.

The visitors then went on board the Oshkosh Striker airfield rescue and firefighting vehicle (ARFF) to see it in action.

The visit finished at 32 (The Royal) Squadron where Sqn Ldr Pratley gave an overview of the wide range of work the squadron is involved in and the diplomacy required in planning flights. The Solicitor General finished her visit with a guided tour of the Envoy IV CC Mk1.

Reflecting on her visit, the Solicitor General said: “My visit gave me the opportunity to meet with the RAF Music Services, the Fire Section and the renowned XXXII (The Royal) Squadron. Throughout the day, I was struck by the dedication and professionalism of everyone I met, who work extremely hard to ensure their respective Services deliver the very best for our Armed Forces and the country.”

Commemoration of Fallen Polish Airmen Wg Cdr Caroline Krolikowski

30 August 25 marked the annual and 64th Commemoration of Fallen Polish Airmen which was held at the Polish Air Force Memorial.

T

he ceremony was attended by Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth in his first official capacity as the new Chief of the Air Staff and Group Captain Lee Wales, also in his first official capacity as Station Commander.

The Commemoration was an opportunity for the Chief of the Air Staff and Station Commander to meet with a number of UK and Polish dignitaries including Colonel Jarosław Neffe, Commander of the Multinational Air-Ground Integration School and Colonel Andrzej Truskowski, Vice Rector of the Polish Air Force University Dęblin, Poland together with a delegation of University cadets.

wreaths were laid together with squadron wreaths laid by veterans or descendants of each Polish Bomber and Fighter squadron.

RAF Northolt which continues to preserve its rich heritage and maintain close ties with both the local Polish community and Polish Air Force. Today’s Commemoration epitomised how incredibly important these relationships are and I look forward to further cooperation during my Command.”

This included Marian Słomka, a 100 year old veteran, who undertook his apprenticeship during WWII at RAF Halton.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth said: “It was a real honour to represent the RAF at this year’s Commemoration.

Poland is a key strategic NATO partner and I am keen to ensure that we deepen our the linkages between our Air Forces and continue to build on this vital relationship.”

In 2025, KCS and RAF Music once again executed this responsibility with the spotless precision for which they have become known.

SOFT POWER AND THE RAF’S PUBLIC IMAGE While military capability is often measured in terms of aircraft, training, or operational readiness, soft power—the ability to influence and inspire through culture, reputation, and values—plays an equally vital role in shaping the RAF’s

position on the global stage.

Ceremonial duties are a direct expression of this soft power.

The image of impeccably turned-out RAF Regiment gunners, standing motionless at Buckingham Palace or stepping in perfect synchronisation during Changing the Guard, reinforces the RAF’s identity as a modern, highly professional, and globally respected force. Each parade, each public interaction, and each televised moment becomes a diplomatic tool: demonstrating discipline, tradition, diversity, and excellence. Public Duties also provide a visible reminder that the Service is not only technologically advanced but also steeped in heritage and human excellence.

THE EXCELLENCE OF THE KING’S COLOUR SQUADRON AND RAF MUSIC The King’s Colour Squadron, formed in 1960, has long been celebrated for its immaculate drill, ceremonial prowess, and impeccable public presentation. Their continuity drill—performed

without verbal commands— is regarded as some of the most complex and impressive drill in the world. In 2025, the Squadron demonstrated its usual flawless standard while undertaking guard mountings in the heart of the capital.

Complementing the Squadron’s visual precision,

RAF Music provided the musical excellence that has become a trademark of Royal Air Force ceremonial events. Whether supporting Changing the Guard, state visits, or major RAF anniversaries, the RAF Central Band, Band of the RAF Regiment, and other ensembles showcased a level of musicianship that

rivals any professional orchestra.

Their contribution to Public Duties elevates each event, merging military bearing with artistic excellence in a way few nations can match.

Together, the KCS and RAF Music create a public display of professionalism and tradition that reinforces national pride and enhances the UK’s cultural and diplomatic image.

RAF Northolt Personnel Embark on

Eye-Opening Force Development Trip to Poland

A

group of personnel from RAF Northolt recently undertook a Force Development (FD) trip to Poland, a journey that proved to be both educational and deeply moving. Over the course of six days, we explored key historical sites, immersed ourselves in local culture, and reflected on the profound lessons of history.

The trip, which spanned from Kraków to Gdańsk, offered a unique opportunity to enhance personal and professional development while fostering camaraderie among the team.

KRAKÓW AND AUSCHWITZ The trip began in Kraków, one of Poland’s most historic cities.

The group’s first major visit was to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous Nazi concentration and extermination camp.

Walking through the preserved barracks, gas chambers, and vast grounds was an emotional and humbling experience.

Confronted with the scale of suffering endured by millions, personnel reflected on the importance of remembrance, resilience, and the duty to uphold human rights. For many, the visit was one of the most powerful and thoughtprovoking moments of the trip.

WROCLAW Our next destination was Wroclaw, a vibrant city in western Poland known for its stunning architecture, lively atmosphere, and deep historical roots. Here, we had the opportunity to explore the local culture and cuisine, sampling traditional Polish dishes such as pierogi (dumplings) and bigos (hunter’s stew). The city’s bustling market square, colourful townhouses, and the iconic Wroclaw Cathedral provided a picturesque backdrop for this cultural immersion.

A key highlight of this leg of the trip was a visit to the Reissn Complex, a lesser known but fascinating site tied to Poland’s wartime history. The Reiss Complex, a network of underground tunnels and bunkers, was constructed during the Second World War

as part of the Nazi regime’s secretive Project Riese. We explored the eerie, unfinished tunnels, which were intended to serve as a military command centre and possibly a weapons production facility. The visit offered a unique insight into the scale of Nazi engineering and the forced labour that was used to construct the complex, often under brutal conditions. It was a sobering reminder of the human cost of war and the resilience of those who endured it.

POZNAN Before arriving in Gdansk, we stopped at the Commonwealth Grave Commission in Poznan, the Grave Commission stands as a poignant tribute to the sacrifices made during the Second World War. Known as the Poznań Old Garrison Cemetery, it is the final resting place for 283 Commonwealth servicemen, many of whom were airmen

who lost their lives during operations over Poland or while attempting to escape from German captivity. The CWGC meticulously maintains the cemetery, ensuring that each grave is a dignified and enduring symbol of remembrance. This site not only honours the fallen but also serves as a reminder of the shared history and sacrifices of Commonwealth nations during times of conflict.

GDAŃSK Travellling north, the team arrived in Gdańsk, a city steeped in wartime history. Here, they visited the acclaimed Museum of the Second World War. Through immersive exhibitions, artefacts, and personal testimonies, the museum offered a comprehensive view of the war’s global impact, while placing particular emphasis on Poland’s suffering and resilience. The group also

visited Stutthof concentration camp, the first established by the Nazis outside Germany.

The camp’s harrowing history and preserved remains once again brought home the scale of human tragedy inflicted during the war.

Amid these sobering visits, personnel also took time to enjoy Gdansk’s lively old town and sample more of Poland’s renowned cuisine.

WOLF’S LAIR – HITLER’S EASTERN HEADQUARTERS The final leg of the journey took the group to the Wolf’s Lair, Adolf Hitler’s wartime military headquarters hidden deep within the forests of present-day Kętrzyn. It was from this fortified complex that major operations on the Eastern Front were directed, and it was also the site of the famous 1944 assassination attempt against Hitler. Exploring the crumbling bunkers and reinforced shelters offered a striking contrast between the immense resources devoted to war and the ultimate futility of Nazi ambitions.

Reflection and Development The force development trip proved to be far more than a journey across Poland. It allowed RAF Northolt personnel to gain a deeper appreciation of Europe’s shared history, the consequences of conflict, and the resilience of nations in the face of unimaginable hardship. Balancing moments of solemn reflection with cultural exploration, the visit fostered stronger bonds within the team and reinforced the importance of remembrance in shaping future generations.

FOND FAREWELLS

Fond Farewells This year we said farewell to several Whole Force personnel leaving RAF Northolt, whether on promotion, posting or retirement.

June saw the departure of WO Steve “Bugsy” Felstead following an impressive 35 years’ service.

Throughout his distinguished career in the Logistics profession, specialising in Movements, he deployed worldwide. Bugsy was presented with the iconic bowler hat and bid farewell by Station personnel.

In July, Squadron Leader Andrew Bull handed over Command of KCS to Squadron Leader Chris Dixon and Mr Robbie Sheldrake retired from his role as Storeman within the PEd Flight following an illustrious career in the Civil Service spanning 47 years.

The month ended with Group Captain Jon Hough handing over Command of RAF Northolt to Group Captain Lee Wales. Following a short ceremony Group Captain Hough was transported off Station in style by Mr Phil Dawe MBE and, as a show of thanks, personnel lined the road to clap and wish him well.

Forsythe who left RAF Northolt after 17 years as Mess Manager and secondly to Mrs Elizabeth Smith who, for the last 18 years, has been the driving force within the Whitehouse Gate Main Guardroom. Members of the RAF Police Flt also presented Liz with some additional leaving gifts to thank her for her service.

The Health and Wellness Day, held in the Station Gym on 23 July, brought together numerous clubs, services and sections to showcase the vast array of opportunities available together with some freebies which are always well received!

Junior Personnel

Development The Force Development Squadron facilitated two excellent Junior Ranks Leadership courses this year.

It aims to prepare personnel for the acting rank of Corporal and future NCO roles and consists of a day’s leadership theory followed by two days practical leadership tasks.

As well as including theoretical lessons, presentations and leadership tasks, Northolt’s fantastic indoor climbing facility was also put to good use.

OC FDS, Sqn Ldr Ollie Smith said: “The aim of the course is to develop tomorrow’s junior leaders within the RAF. It is a fantastic three days and all participants quickly grasped the theoretical elements of the training, before then successfully applying it to solve challenging command tasks as a team. They were leaders already – the course just helped to bring this out of them and develop the qualities they didn’t necessarily know they had”.

he second annual Northolt Heroes (NHEROs) awards evening was held on 13 November 2025 which was an opportunity to celebrate our personnel for their leadership, community spirit and commitment to RAF Northolt. Our thanks to Warrant Officer Paul Royer for setting the scene with his excellent Master of Ceremonies skills and tunes, although there was some dodgy karaoke singing towards the end!

The first award of the evening was the Station Commander’s Leadership Award which was presented to Sgt Tarra Scott for displaying exemplary leadership and mentoring resulting in a marked improvement in the RAF Police Flight’s overall strategic delivery on Station.

The Professional Excellence Award was presented to Flight Sergeant Rob Evans, Base Support Wing, for his exemplary leadership, inspiring others to achieve excellence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

n July, personnel from the Medical Centre hosted a bake sale on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. There were plenty of delicious treats on offer which resulted in an amazing £537 collected for the charity.

To mark World Mental Health Day, held on 10 October, members of the Air Movements

Sqn embarked on the “DAMO DASH” challenge of cycling an impressive 281 miles and raising £1,118 in the process on behalf of SSAFA. The number of miles covered represents the 281 British military personnel who have sadly taken their own life since 2005. The aim of their fundraising was also to reduce the stigma associated with mental health.

Finally, “Movember” provided an ideal opportunity for our male colleagues to grow and display their finest moustaches and beards while also shining a spotlight on the importance of self-awareness and checking for testicular cancer.

Led by AS1 Chad Kenny from No.1 AIDU, Team Northolt held a range of activities including a bake sale and “Row for a Bro”, covering 378km over an 8-hour period. As well as promoting awareness, they raised over £670 in the process.

Reflecting on 2025, much has been achieved and improved since Padre Andi Chapman arrived in March. He has refurbished the Community Room at the back of St. Christopher’s Church, making it a perfect venue to host his invaluable workshops including Burnout Stress Awareness, Five Languages of Appreciation, Loss & Bereavement, Emotional Intelligence and Samaritans Listening Skills. These have been delivered at both workplaces as he works here at RAF Northolt Tuesdays & Thursdays, alternating Fridays and Northwood HQ CSOC Mondays and Wednesdays.

These excellent workshops will be reinstated on his return from deployment in May 2026. They are very popular, and spaces fill fast, so do look out for start dates in the New Year and book through me.

Before his pre-deployment leave (and during) Padre Andi delivered

many services, one covering a wedding at St. Clement Danes and two Remembrance services, Ruislip Parade and for Station on the 11 November. Finally, he hosted a wonderful Carol Service on 4 December followed by mince pies and mulled wine in the Community Room.

While Padre Andi is deployed until April 2026, we have our reservist Chaplain, Padre (Rabino) Samuel de Beck Spitzer, mobilised to provide support during this time. new qualifications, which enable students to better prepare for further and higher education. New methods of teaching and learning can also be shared with the state sector.

Independent schools place great value on providing a broad all-round education including learning opportunities outside the classroom, such as music, sport, drama and volunteering.

Helping to develop soft skills is hugely important, and we know from independent research that pupils at our schools are confident and like a challenge. Independent schools are well known for delivering character education and supporting wellbeing.

DELIVERING VALUE TO SOCIETY Just over half of all independent schools are charities that advance education. These schools are regulated by the Charity Commission and must report on public benefit in their trustees’ annual report.

Schools will primarily deliver public benefit by way of support for the state sector through partnerships and schemes to widen access.

Partnerships Schools of all kinds are demonstrating that in partnership they can achieve more, bringing educational experiences to a greater number of children through all kinds of collaborative projects.

Educational partnerships between independent and state schools are an important aspect of school life and such collaborations mutually benefit school communities. Our Census shows ISC schools are currently involved in 11,500 partnership projects.

Independent schools offer GCSE and Alevel revision classes; subject support in maths, science and modern foreign languages; teacher training; careers and higher education advice – including interview technique and application support – as well as masterclasses in subjects like Latin and classics which are not often available outside the independent sector.

Larger independent schools have forged partnerships through the sponsorship and cosponsorship of schools as part of the Government’s academies and free schools programme. Schools such as the London Academies of Excellence in Tottenham and Stratford rely on independent school sponsorship and achieve high rates of Oxbridge entry.

The sector is keen to do more and has signed a Joint Understanding with the Department

for Education to grow stateindependent school partnerships to “support the raising of educational standards in state schools”. The ISC publishes an annual report on partnership working.

“We have developed professional and productive relationships across a diversity of independent and state schools. We recognise that collaboration between the sectors is of great value – learning from our diversity makes each of us better at what we do.”

Andrew Celano, state headteacher at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Bishop’s Stortford Widening access Independent schools are working to widen access to their schools through bursary provision and recognise the benefits this brings both to bursary pupils and the wider school community. Our latest data shows: • ISC schools currently provide £422m in means-tested bursaries and scholarships – a 6% increase on last year.

• One in 13 pupils at ISC schools is on a means-tested bursary or scholarship. There is an appetite to do more but most schools do not have large endowments and must meet bursary costs throughfundraising.

• A scheme to place increasing numbers of looked-after children (LAC) in independent schools is under development. Following a successful pilot in Norfolk, local authorities and receiving independent schools are committed to jointly fund places for LACs and children on the edge of care. In addition, Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation provides bursaries for disadvantaged and vulnerable children to attend boarding schools.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE ISC schools are proud to be part of a diverse education system, where different schools collaborate together to support all children to meet their potential.

Independent schools are part of the solution to the educational issues facing the country and should be an asset that is harnessed. The offer each independent school can make to state schools in their local communities will vary according to capability and experience, but through strengthened local brokerage independent schools

“I know first-hand how important it is to have stability and continuity of education for a child when their parents are serving around the world. Not only is Giggleswick located in one of the most beautiful places in the country – away from the worries and stresses of the city – but we’re small enough that everybody knows everybody which creates a really strong sense of community.”

He added: “I was fortunate that my parents were able to send me to boarding school - otherwise I would have had to attend six different schools over a ten-year period. It would have been very disruptive; boarding provided a constancy which allowed me to make and keep friends, and really feel part of something – it was a home from home.”

can come together to make a positive difference to local state partners, with all participants gaining from the experience.

In addition, the sector is open to discussions on how access to independent schools could be widened, possibly through some form of co-funding model.

It is essential that any proposed reforms do not negatively impact upon the state system. Proposals to add VAT to fees and to remove charitable tax reliefs would be damaging to all schools both independent and state.

European law currently exempts all forms of education from VAT because of the value of learning to society, and independent schools are not treated as a special case in this respect. Imposing VAT on school fees would penalise parents and would be a tax on learning.

Ultimately, it would be smaller independent schools without large catchment areas that would be hit hardest by VAT, potentially leading to closures that harm parents, pupils, and staff. It is inevitable that a sudden fee increase will mean children moving to the state sector, swelling class sizes and resulting in higher costs. Research shows that VAT would cost the Government at least £416m in its fifth year once pupil displacement and VAT recovery is taken into account.

Parents value choice over their children’s education. Recent polling has shown 68% of people believe that parents should have the choice of paying for their children’s education, while only 18% disagreed.

Independent schools are part of the broader educational offering, delivering excellence to the pupils in their care, and a force for good that can be utilised for the benefit of pupils across the country.

ABOUT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS Parents who choose independent schools want the best for their children. The money spent on fees comes from taxed income with many families stretching resources to support their children in this way.

As the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights states, “parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children”.

Assumptions about independent schools are often based on outdated stereotypes that mask the true diversity of a sector encompassing co-educational schools, single-sex, boarding and provision for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Specialist music, dance and SEND schools receive state funding, providing capacity for children who could not be accommodated in the state system.

ISC schools vary significantly in size from fewer than 50 pupils to over 2,000, although half of all schools have fewer than 300 pupils. In reality,many independent schools are small and not as wealthy as people may imagine.

Only 83 schools (or 6% of ISC members) have more than a thousand pupils.

Data from our annual school Census also shows that: • Half of our schools are not selective.

• Over 15% of pupils at our schools have SEND. • A third of pupils at ISC schools are from ethnic minority backgrounds – the same proportion as the state sector.

• Over a quarter of new pupils to ISC schools joined from the statefunded sector.

We do have an excellent Combined Cadet Force, but what really matters is that everyone has the opportunity to develop their own strengths, find things that interest them and strive towards excellence in those fields.”

Deputy headmaster and Designated Safeguarding Lead of the school, Christian San Jose, also served in the forces for six years as an infantry officer in The Royal Green Jackets/The Rifles.

He said: “I think it is really helpful that both Sam and I have military experience as together we understand those extra challenges military families have.

“As a school, we are extremely wellplaced to support the additional needs forces families have - even the small things that make life easier for families such as picking a child up from the airport, or the out of term care we provide.

Communication between parents, children and the school is key, and we’re lucky that technology now allows pupils to talk to their parents whenever they want.”

Mr Hart agreed that pastoral care is vital. He said: “As a housemaster, I was responsible for the care of 63 boys, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Keeping them safe, happy and feeling they belonged and were part of something was very important.

KAYAKING CHAMPION BECOMES NEW HEAD OF OUTDOOR EDUCATION We are delighted to announce that Housemaster, Pete Keron, now leads our Outdoor Education provision.

Mr Keron has been teaching Maths here at Giggleswick for ten years as well as instructing climbing, kayaking, mountaineering and mountain biking.

Mr Keron’s passion for the outdoors began with Kayaking and he has represented Great Britain five times at the World Championships as well as winning three National Championships in the sport. Originally from Cumbria, he has rock climbed extensively throughout the UK and Europe and has cycled solo across America as well as from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He is also a keen fell runner and mountain bike racer and won the Adidas Terex ‘Coast to Coast’ Adventure race in 2015.
