s the winter months come to a close, I am delighted to be writing my first foreword as Station Commander of RAF Waddington. It is a genuine privilege to take up this appointment, and I am immensely proud to join a Station with such a distinguished operational heritage and an outstanding reputation across Defence.

From my earliest days in post, I have been struck by the professionalism, warmth, and determination of the people who make this Station what it is. I am very happy to be here and honoured to serve alongside you all.

RAF Waddington continues to deliver exceptional operational output in support of the UK and interests worldwide.

Whether generating intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance effects, enabling reach-back support, or sustaining those deployed at short notice, the Station remains at the forefront of operational excellence. The commitment shown across all squadrons, units, and supporting functions ensures that we provide Defence with credible, responsive capability whenever and wherever it is required.

This edition of Insight highlights not only our operational successes but also the strength of our community. I particularly enjoyed the Christmas Dinner hosted on Station for the families of those deployed over the festive period. While operations do not pause for the holidays, it was heartening to see our community come together to support families and ensure they felt valued and 6 INSIGHTMAGAZINE

OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE On 5 May 2026, personnel from Royal Air Force 54 Squadron marked the 110th anniversary of the unit’s formation, celebrating more than a century of distinguished operational service.

O connected during what can be a challenging time. That spirit of care and cohesion is one of RAF Waddington’s greatest strengths.

We also marked a significant milestone as the final elements of the Reaper force departed the United States, closing an important chapter in its operational history. As we transition fully to Protector, we look to the future of remotely piloted air systems and the enhanced capability this platform brings to UK Defence.

Protector represents a step change in persistence, flexibility, and compliance within controlled airspace, reinforcing Waddington’s role as the home of UK ISTAR capability and a cornerstone of national security.

My sincere thanks go to every member of the Station for your continued hard work, resilience, and dedication. Your efforts—often unseen—are fundamental to our success.

Finally, Insight remains your magazine. I encourage you to support our new editor and continue contributing your stories, achievements, and ideas so that together we showcase the people and professionalism that define RAF Waddington.

riginally established at Castle Bromwich in 1916 as part of the Royal Flying Corps, 54 Squadron has played a pivotal role in several of the RAF’s defining moments.

The Squadron saw extensive action on the Western Front during the First World War and later contributed to the evacuation at Dunkirk. It went on to achieve notable success during the Battle of Britain, emerging as the highest-scoring Squadron of the campaign. Its operational legacy has continued in more recent conflicts, including the Gulf War, Operation HERRICK, and Operation SHADER. The Squadron also holds the distinction of being the first RAF unit to fly a jet-powered aircraft, the Vampire, across the Atlantic.

More recently, in 2025, the Squadron marked 20 years as the RAF’s ISTAR Operational Conversion Unit. In this capacity, it delivers aircrew training for operators of E-3, Nimrod, Sentinel, Rivet Joint, Poseidon, Reaper, Shadow, and Protector. The unit also provides ISTAR tactician and Qualified Weapons Instructor-level training, alongside specialist instruction for engineers supporting Rivet Joint, Shadow, and Protector platforms.

To commemorate 110 years of service, Squadron personnel undertook a 110-mile relay run from Castle Bromwich,

the unit’s original home, to RAF Waddington, its current base. Personnel from across all cadres participated, either running or supporting throughout the day, in a collective tribute to those who have served before them.

“Remembering the past endeavours of 54 Squadron is fundamental to the ethos of today’s unit. While our task has evolved, we continue to deliver Air Power with the same professionalism and dedication shown by those who served before us, often in the most demanding of circumstances. Taking time to reflect is important, and this run provided a fitting way to honour our history while strengthening our cohesion as a team. In the truest sense of our motto, we demonstrated the Boldness to Endure Anything, even 110 miles of running.”

Wing Commander Phillips Officer Commanding 54 Squadron The Squadron also conducted Exercise VIVRE LION, a fourday Force Development visit to France, during which personnel visited key sites linked to the Squadron’s heritage to commemorate and celebrate its achievements.

Thirteen personnel attended, gaining insight into the role of 54 Squadron in the Battles of Arras (1917) and Cambrai (1917), as well as Operation

Highlights of Exercise VIVRE LION included a visit to the Dunkirk 1940 Museum, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Allied Memorial and a period of reflection on the beach. Learning about the resilience demonstrated by Air Commodore Alan Deere DSO, OBE, DFC & Bar during his time with 54 Squadron, particularly while flying

Spitfires during Operation DYNAMO, proved especially impactful. Equally, an immersive underground tour of the Carrière Wellington Tunnels offered a poignant and thought-provoking experience, bringing to life the challenging conditions faced during the conflict.

RAF WADDINGTON CORPORAL MAKES HISTORY AT FIELD GUN COMPETITION Corporal Joss Chester, representing RAF Waddington, achieved a historic series of milestones at this year’s Junior Leaders Field Gun competition.

T

he Junior Field Gun Competition is a physically demanding and highly disciplined event inspired by the Royal Navy’s historic Field Gun runs. Designed for young participants, it focuses on teamwork, leadership, resilience, and communication under pressure. Teams must work together to manoeuvre equipment and complete the course as quickly and efficiently as possible, developing trust and cohesion.

Ultimately, the competition aims to build confidence, foster leadership skills, and instil core values such as determination, accountability, and mutual support.

Serving as the No.1 Trainer for the Royal Navy Cadet Forces, Cpl Chester became the youngest No.1 Trainer in the ten-year history of

the event—a competition that, while relatively young, is already establishing itself as a valued and enduring tradition thanks to its strong roots and rich heritage.

Under his guidance and mentorship, the team secured the prestigious Inter-Cadet Trophy and placed 3rd overall.

This landmark performance made them the first cadet crew ever to reach the Grand Final, competing directly against highly disciplined and experienced military crews.

Cpl Chester’s leadership and clear training standards with the cadet team resulted in significant individual recognition. Outperforming a competitive field of trainers, he was officially awarded No.1 Trainer of the Year.

This historic outcome highlights Cpl Chester’s

professional excellence, technical knowledge, and composure. His achievements at the competition have set a new benchmark for youth leadership within the service.

Inside the RAF Benevolent Fund’s year-round mental health support Mental wellbeing is a vital part of life in and beyond service. For RAF personnel and their families, having the right support in place can make all the difference.

We sat down with Air Commodore Simon Harper to discuss how the RAF Benevolent Fund is helping the RAF community navigate mental health challenges every day.

S

imon served for 34 years in the RAF, including as Station Commander at RAF Halton, which gave him first-hand insight into the challenges military life can present for serving personnel and their families. In his role as Director of Operations at the Fund, he oversees the delivery of grants, services and programmes, including welfare support, wellbeing initiatives and funding for RAF units and facilities, ensuring help is provided at the right time and for however long it is required.

From your experience, what are some of the posing challenges serving RAF personnel and their families may face?

Due to the transient nature of military life, RAF families are often required to relocate to different bases and locations frequently, sometimes at short notice.

My family was no different, and I know how disruptive this can be particularly to children’s education.

Deployments can place significant strain on families with the absence of a partner or parent for extended periods often leading to emotional and practical challenges for the family left behind, including feelings of isolation when moving far from family and friends.

Since 2016, the Fund has provided £620,000 in Children’s Needs Grants, supporting families with essential costs such as childcare, educational needs and unexpected wellbeing expenses.

Additionally, over the last 15 years, the Fund has invested millions of pounds in childcare centres and play parks across RAF stations that provide support and benefit to children and young people every day.

What emotional support does the Fund provide for serving personnel and their families to help overcome these challenges?

Supporting mental wellbeing sits at the heart of everything we do. Whilst all the Fund’s services are designed to support the emotional wellbeing of our beneficiaries, we know that for many within the RAF Family, having access to direct, personalised emotional support can make a real difference.

Our Listening and Counselling Service provides a safe, confidential space to talk through whatever you may be facing, whether that’s stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties or challenges linked to service life. This includes Children and Young People who need support in dealing with issues such as bullying, academic pressure or low self-esteem.

We also offer a free membership to Headspace for Regular and

Reserve RAF personnel, their partners, and any members of the RAF Family who are currently using our Listening and Counselling Service.

Headspace provides short, guided mindfulness sessions via phone or browser, proven to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood and support better sleep.

What support is available if someone needs to talk urgently?

Our 24-hour emotional support helpline offers free, confidential emotional support from trained counsellors for serving personnel and their families. You can speak to someone immediately or arrange a call back at a time that suits you.

The service supports issues such as stress, anxiety, bereavement, low mood and loneliness, and is delivered on behalf of the Fund by Wellbeing Solutions. Call 0808 1751 365 at any time.

How does the Fund help couples and families who may be experiencing relationship pressures?

Service life can place real strain on relationships, whether that’s due to deployments, frequent moves or the pressures of balancing family life alongside RAF commitments. The Fund works in partnership with Relate to offer free, confidential relationship counselling and mediation for serving personnel, reservists, veterans and their partners.

This support provides couples and families with a safe space to talk things through with a trained counsellor, helping them manage conflict, strengthen communication and navigate challenges in a way that works for them. Sessions can be accessed facetoface, online or by phone, making support flexible and accessible wherever you’re based.

What advice can you give to families who may need a break from everyday life?

We recognise that every family is different and that most do superbly well managing daily stresses and strains. Of course, there are times when a break can provide important benefits that contribute to overall health and wellbeing.

Taking a break allows you to rest and recharge, reducing the risk of burnout and improving overall health. It also allows the perfect opportunity to reconnect with loved ones.

We offer a selection of wellbeing breaks for those experiencing pressures or challenges who could benefit from a break away. The Fund’s cottage, the Folly, in the seaside town of Bridlington, is also available for subsidised welfare breaks for serving RAF personnel and RAF veterans all year round. We offer Accessible Breaks for those with mobility needs, removing the stress from planning a holiday by ensuring accommodation is fully adapted to meet accessibility requirements.

Currently in collaboration with Parkdean Resorts, we also offer serving personnel and their families an expanded range of breaks at a wider number of locations across the country.

Serving personnel with welfare needs can apply for serving breaks here and priority will be given to families most in need.

How does the Fund support those with caring responsibilities?

We understand the pressures of caring for a loved one and provide a range of support for carers, including funding towards respite breaks, mobility equipment, housing adaptations, advocacy and benefits advice. This can be found on our website via our free digital resource for carers, in partnership with Carers UK. How can military life affect RAF children and young people?

In our Growing up in the RAF report, we identified that the main worries of RAF children and young people are deployment and frequent home moves, having to leave friends behind and disrupted education.

We are immensely proud to have provided bespoke support for RAF children and their families for over 20 years, including significant investment in childcare centres, play parks, mental health support and our Airplay programme.

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund has been supporting the RAF Family for 107 years with financial, practical and emotional support. We exist to support current and former members of the RAF, their partners and families, whenever they need us. One day's service, a lifetime of support.

Waddington’s Reserves:

The Power Behind the Force Part 1: 502 (Ulster) Squadron

T

his feature marks the start of a four-part series highlighting the contribution of each of Waddington’s Reserve units. Each article will focus on one squadron in turn—beginning here with No. 502 (Ulster) Squadron, followed by No. 2503 (County of Lincoln) Squadron, No. 616 Squadron, and the Intelligence Reserves Wing.

At RAF Waddington, the Reserves Coordination Team plays a crucial role in integrating, supporting, and working alongside Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) personnel across the station’s wide-ranging operational activities. Acting as the primary point of contact for Reserve units—including No. 502 (Ulster) Squadron, No. 2503 (County of Lincoln) Squadron, No. 616 Squadron, and the Intelligence Reserves Wing— the team works closely with squadron chains of command to ensure Reservists are effectively mobilised, trained, and embedded alongside their Regular counterparts.

The team provides guidance on the various types of Reserve service and employment, proactively coordinates Reserve Support Requests, and promotes training and employment opportunities across the station. It also supports line managers in recruiting Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS) and Additional Duties Commitment (ADC) personnel, contributes as an independent panel member for FTRS recruitment, and plays a key role in business engagement to strengthen relationships between

Reservists, civilian employers, and the RAF. In addition, the team ensures personnel on temporary duty are appropriately supported and works closely with Base Support Group coordinators to maximise the contribution of Volunteer Ex-Regular Reservists.

Number 502 (Ulster) Squadron Number 502 (Ulster) Squadron, based in Northern Ireland, is an Air Operational Support Squadron (AOSS) within 2 Group Reserves which manages 109 Part-Time Volunteer Reserves (PTVRs) across eight distinct professions and nineteen specialisations. The squadron attracts recruits from all communities across Northern Ireland and holds the distinction of being the largest RAF Force Element and the only Royal Auxiliary Air Force unit in the region.

Furthermore, 502 Squadron remains the preferred unit to support Air Officer Northern Ireland’s Engagement Strategy, reflecting its pivotal role

in regional defence and community relations.

Despite its geographically isolated location, the squadron maintains a strong focus on operational output.

Our personnel consistently volunteer their spare time to undertake a wide range of tasks, demonstrating exceptional commitment and professionalism. Primarily, our PTVRs exhibit remarkable agility and readiness, deploying as individual augmentees or in small specialist teams. They seamlessly integrate their skills within the Whole Force framework to deliver effective support during Mobilisations, overseas operations and multinational exercises.

All members serve with enthusiasm and confidence, supported by a motivated and experienced Full-Time Reserve Staff team of ten personnel who provide comprehensive support across the A1 to A9 functional pillars. Each month, the squadron delivers a robust

programme of command, leadership, and mandatory training, alongside Phase 1 Basic Recruit Training Course instruction. Opportunities for APDT and FD are interspersed throughout the year, rewarding commitment and further enhancing leadership skills and team cohesion.

With a strong emphasis on operational readiness, and in partnership with the local Army Training Unit, the squadron annually conducts a rigorous four-day live-fire range package. This intensive training, combined with fieldcraft exercises, builds confidence in operational environments, sustains core marksmanship skills with the Service Rifle and ensures our personnel remain fully prepared to fight and win in any theatre.

Collectively, these activities foster a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork, reinforcing squadron identity and ethos, which in turn supports high retention rates.

It is particularly noteworthy that our personnel willingly volunteer to join the RAF Reserve to undertake frontline duties and actively promote the RAF through local engagement activities, despite the enduring SEVERE threat level faced by all members of the Armed Forces serving in Northern Ireland. This unwavering dedication underscores the squadron’s vital contribution to both national defence and community resilience.

With effect from 1 Apr 26, 502 Squadron became formally aligned with RAF Waddington under the redesignation of RAF Auxiliary General Service Support Squadrons to Air Base Operations Support Squadrons.

This means that the squadron will be more closely involved with station activity, which will include using of Reserve Service Days to help mitigate regular workforce gaps and supporting Transition to Conflict work.

RAF Waddington Celebrates Excellence at Industry Day Awards Night While the Lincolnshire sun did its best to steal the spotlight, it was RAF Waddington’s people, teams and industry partners who were the real stars of the evening.

AF Waddington recognised the exceptional achievements of its personnel, teams and industry partners during this year’s Industry Day Awards Night, celebrating the individuals whose dedication, professionalism and commitment continue to make the Station one of the RAF’s leading operational bases.

Awards were presented across a wide range of categories, recognising excellence in aviation, innovation, teamwork, charitable endeavours, sport and community service.

Among the winners were Cpl Georgina, who received the Aviator of the Year Award; Mr Steve, named Civil Servant of

the Year; the L3Harris Team, recognised for Industry’s Outstanding Contribution; Fg Off James, who received the Resourcefulness & Innovation Award; and 1 ISR Wing, awarded Outstanding Team of the Year. No. 216 Squadron was also honoured with the Squadron Leader David Graham Memorial Award, while the Carswell Club Committee received the People & Community Award for its unwavering efforts in bringing the RAF Waddington community together.

The Reservist of the Year Award was jointly presented to Sqn Ldr Jessica and Flt Lee, recognising their significant contributions alongside their reserve service commitments.

Cpl Chris received the Spirit of Waddington Award, while Cpl Alex was recognised with the Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award for excellence in representing the Station through sport.

Beyond the trophies and applause, the evening served as a reminder of the extraordinary people who make RAF Waddington what it is today. From those driving operational excellence and innovation to those strengthening the Station’s sense of community, every nominee embodied the talent, commitment and spirit found across RAF Waddington.

The success of the evening was also made possible by the efforts of those working

behind the scenes. Project Officer Sqn Ldr Thorbes and Deputy Project Officer Sgt Nikki Todd-Severn were instrumental in delivering a fitting and memorable celebration of excellence, while Will Burton provided crucial support through the production of event reprographics, from table plans to award certificates, ensuring every detail was presented to the highest standard.

The Industry Day Awards Night was a fitting celebration of the people, teams and partners whose contributions continue to strengthen RAF Waddington's operational success and community spirit.

DELIVERING VALUE TO SOCIETY Just over half of all independent schools are charities that advance education. These schools are regulated by the Charity Commission and must report on public benefit in their trustees’ annual report.

Schools will primarily deliver public benefit by way of support for the state sector through partnerships and schemes to widen access.

Partnerships Schools of all kinds are demonstrating that in partnership they can achieve more, bringing educational experiences to a greater number of children through all kinds of collaborative projects.

Educational partnerships between independent and state schools are an important aspect of school life and such collaborations mutually benefit school communities. Our Census shows ISC schools are currently involved in 11,500 partnership projects.

Independent schools offer GCSE and Alevel revision classes; subject support in maths, science and modern foreign languages; teacher training; careers and higher education advice – including interview technique and application support – as well as masterclasses in subjects like Latin and classics which are not often available outside the independent sector.

Larger independent schools have forged partnerships through the sponsorship and cosponsorship of schools as part of the Government’s academies and free schools programme. Schools such as the London Academies of Excellence in Tottenham and Stratford rely on independent school sponsorship and achieve high rates of Oxbridge entry.

The sector is keen to do more and has signed a Joint Understanding with the Department

for Education to grow stateindependent school partnerships to “support the raising of educational standards in state schools”. The ISC publishes an annual report on partnership working.

“We have developed professional and productive relationships across a diversity of independent and state schools. We recognise that collaboration between the sectors is of great value – learning from our diversity makes each of us better at what we do.”Andrew Celano, state headteacher at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Bishop’s Stortford Widening access Independent schools are working to widen access to their schools through bursary provision and recognise the benefits this brings both to bursary pupils and the wider school community. Our latest data shows: • ISC schools currently provide £422m in means-tested bursaries and scholarships – a 6% increase on last year.

• One in 13 pupils at ISC schools is on a means-tested bursary or scholarship. There is an appetite to do more but most schools do not have large endowments and must meet bursary costs throughfundraising.

• A scheme to place increasing numbers of looked-after children (LAC) in independent schools is under development. Following a successful pilot in Norfolk, local authorities and receiving independent schools are committed to jointly fund places for LACs and children on the edge of care. In addition, Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation provides bursaries for disadvantaged and vulnerable children to attend boarding schools.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE ISC schools are proud to be part of a diverse education system, where different schools collaborate together to support all children to meet their potential.

Independent schools are part of the solution to the educational issues facing the country and should be an asset that is harnessed. The offer each independent school can make to state schools in their local communities will vary according to capability and experience, but through strengthened local brokerage independent schools

As a child, Mr Hart also attended boarding school while his father served in the Royal Air Force. He said: “I have seen some amazing places

over the years, but the Yorkshire Dales is just incredible. Every morning when I see the beauty of the area - the hills, the greenery - I know how lucky I am to be here, and how lucky our pupils are as well. It really is an absolutely perfect place for children to grow up.

“I know first-hand how important it is to have stability and continuity of education for a child when their parents are serving around the world. Not only is Giggleswick located in one of the most beautiful places in the country – away from the worries and stresses of the city – but we’re small enough that everybody knows everybody which creates a really strong sense of community.”

He added: “I was fortunate that my parents were able to send me to boarding school - otherwise I would have had to attend six different schools over a ten-year period. It would have been very disruptive; boarding provided a constancy which allowed me to make and keep friends, and really feel part of something – it was a home from home.”

Mr Hart added: “Life is busy at Giggleswick. There’s always something going on and everyone is pulling together, staff and pupils, to ensure there’s a strong sense of place and community.

“We also focus a lot on the individual and know it doesn’t necessarily

can come together to make a positive difference to local state partners, with all participants gaining from the experience.

In addition, the sector is open to discussions on how access to independent schools could be widened, possibly through some form of co-funding model.

It is essential that any proposed reforms do not negatively impact upon the state system. Proposals to add VAT to fees and to remove charitable tax reliefs would be damaging to all schools both independent and state.

European law currently exempts all forms of education from VAT because of the value of learning to society, and independent schools are not treated as a special case in this respect. Imposing VAT on school fees would penalise parents and would be a tax on learning.

Ultimately, it would be smaller independent schools without large catchment areas that would be hit hardest by VAT, potentially leading to closures that harm parents, pupils, and staff. It is inevitable that a sudden fee increase will mean children moving to the state sector, swelling class sizes and resulting in higher costs. Research shows that VAT would cost the Government at least £416m in its fifth year once pupil displacement and VAT recovery is taken into account.

Parents value choice over their children’s education. Recent polling has shown 68% of people believe that parents should have the choice of paying for their children’s education, while only 18% disagreed.

Independent schools are part of the broader educational offering, delivering excellence to the pupils in their care, and a force for good that can be utilised for the benefit of pupils across the country.

ABOUT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS Parents who choose independent schools want the best for their children. The money spent on fees comes from taxed income with many families stretching resources to support their children in this way.

As the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights states, “parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children”.

Assumptions about independent schools are often based on outdated stereotypes that mask the true diversity of a sector encompassing co-educational schools, single-sex, boarding and provision for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Specialist music, dance and SEND schools receive state funding, providing capacity for children who could not be accommodated in the state system.

ISC schools vary significantly in size from fewer than 50 pupils to over 2,000, although half of all schools have fewer than 300 pupils. In reality,many independent schools are small and not as wealthy as people may imagine.

Only 83 schools (or 6% of ISC members) have more than a thousand pupils.

Data from our annual school Census also shows that: • Half of our schools are not selective.

• Over 15% of pupils at our schools have SEND. • A third of pupils at ISC schools are from ethnic minority backgrounds – the same proportion as the state sector.

• Over a quarter of new pupils to ISC schools joined from the statefunded sector.

We do have an excellent Combined Cadet Force, but what really matters is that everyone has the opportunity to develop their own strengths, find things that interest them and strive towards excellence in those fields.”

Deputy headmaster and Designated Safeguarding Lead of the school, Christian San Jose, also served in the forces for six years as an infantry officer in The Royal Green Jackets/The Rifles.

He said: “I think it is really helpful that both Sam and I have military experience as together we understand those extra challenges military families have.

“As a school, we are extremely wellplaced to support the additional needs forces families have - even the small things that make life easier for families such as picking a child up from the airport, or the out of term care we provide.

Communication between parents, children and the school is key, and we’re lucky that technology now allows pupils to talk to their parents whenever they want.”

Mr Hart agreed that pastoral care is vital. He said: “As a housemaster, I was responsible for the care of 63 boys, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Keeping them safe, happy and feeling they belonged and were part of something was very important.

KAYAKING CHAMPION BECOMES NEW HEAD OF OUTDOOR EDUCATION We are delighted to announce that Housemaster, Pete Keron, now leads our Outdoor Education provision.

Mr Keron has been teaching Maths here at Giggleswick for ten years as well as instructing climbing, kayaking, mountaineering and mountain biking.

Mr Keron’s passion for the outdoors began with Kayaking and he has represented Great Britain five times at the World Championships as well as winning three National Championships in the sport. Originally from Cumbria, he has rock climbed extensively throughout the UK and Europe and has cycled solo across America as well as from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He is also a keen fell runner and mountain bike racer and won the Adidas Terex ‘Coast to Coast’ Adventure race in 2015.

Said Mr Keron “Our Outdoor Education provision provides a superb opportunity that reflects the amazing geography and geology of our location. TDF drives Professional Development

across RAF Waddington Training & Development Flight (TDF) at RAF Waddington continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing both individual and collective capability across the station.

W

ith responsibility for delivering a broad spectrum of training activity, TDF ensures personnel have the opportunity to build their knowledge, skills, and mindset to meet current and future Defence challenges.

At the heart of TDF’s delivery is a diverse training offer. This includes Force Development (FD), access to external training opportunities, facilitation of mandatory station training, and a programme of highquality professional lectures, including those delivered by Dr Dave Sloggett. Together, these elements form a coherent and accessible development framework for all personnel.

Locally, activities such as FD at Nocton Hall grounds have supported team cohesion and leadership development in a challenging outdoor environment. Beyond the UK, TDF also facilitated an overseas FD visit to Ypres, Belgium, providing a powerful opportunity for reflection on military history, sacrifice, and the enduring values of service.

Over the course of the Trg Yr 25/26, TDF successfully delivered 115 FD events, supporting 1,111 RAF personnel and 215 nonRAF personnel. This equates to a significant number of training days delivered, reflecting both the scale and reach of the programme.

Commencing in 2026, RAF Waddington personnel have benefited from visits to Bletchley Park, enabling deeper understanding of intelligence, innovation, and problemsolving under pressure.

This event represents a significant opportunity to bring together personnel from across the station in a shared learning environment. Its aim to reinforce RAF Waddington’s collective commitment to excellence, resilience, and continuous improvement, while providing practical tools and insights that personnel can apply in their roles.

Through sustained output, innovative delivery, and a clear focus on people, TDF continues to strengthen its position as a key enabler of FD across RAF Waddington.

Creative Insight Welcome to Insight Magazine’s first edition of Creative Insight — a new space to shine a light on service personnel across RAF Waddington and their creative pursuits away from the blue suit.

F

rom orchestras and choirs to artistic ventures and writing, this feature celebrates the diverse talents within our community.

Before we turn to Waddington’s own ‘tall poppy’ in this edition, I’d like to introduce a writer I met on this journey, Natalie Gordon, whose novel Yours, Everlasting, shortlisted for the Libraro Prize 2026, tells a powerful story of love and endurance set against the backdrop of WWII, inspired by love letters left to her in a will from her close friends, Pam & Ron. Did both Pam and Ron serve during WWII? If so, what roles did they undertake?

Yes, they did. Ron served from the beginning of the war as a senior Subaltern, Lieutenant and Captain in heavy antiaircraft artillery for different regiments and served in the UK for the duration of the war, in locations ranging from Tenby, Glasgow, Birmingham, Belfast and Seaford. After VE Day, he was transferred to the British Occupation Army of the Rhine in Hamburg, his first service abroad.

my female protagonist, Betty, becomes an air ambulance orderly, flying into France after D-Day. When I was researching and came across this small group of women doing such a brave role, I knew it fitted Betty’s character and would also shine a spotlight on a female wartime role which few people know about.

How did their military duties impact their relationship?

Pam spent most of her WAAF time stationed near Exeter, while Ron’s postings kept him moving across the UK. Ron’s letters are full of frustration and longing to be with Pam. At one point he tried to persuade her to ask for a transfer to be near him in Glasgow, but for whatever reason that didn’t happen.

When leave was near, he would write about the digs he’d found

for them and the logistics of them both getting there, then after the leave, he would write to say how much he had loved their time together and how terribly he missed her, but he also tried to see the positive: “I cannot avoid the feeling that because of this war we are going to appreciate home life and companionship and the many varied and delicious intimacies of married life, many many more times than we might otherwise.”

What emotions and challenges came through most strongly in their correspondence?

Ron wrote to Pam almost every day, sharing gossip and frustrations, but most of all how much he loved and missed her, so I’d say the main emotions were love, longing and frustration and their biggest challenge was

not being able to spend time together, even after the birth of their son. He also shared his frustrations at the bureaucracy of war and the work involved when his Colonel visited!

Ron was particularly annoyed to be posted abroad after the end of the war:

“Tell the war office the bloody war is over.”

As a writer exploring wartime service and separation, how did you prepare yourself to write authentically about military life and the impact it has on relationships?

I was lucky to have all of Ron’s letters written between 1942 and 1946, so this gave me a wealth of material. I also found the Imperial War Museum sound archives an invaluable resource. I visited Duxford while I was writing and discovered novels set in

It’s unclear what her role was as I have no correspondence from her and Ron’s letters didn’t refer to her military duties. I do know that she didn’t pass her officer training and she had an administrative role. She left the WAAF in 1943 when she was pregnant with their son.

WWII published by the IWM and written during or just after the war. These contemporary accounts were wonderful not just for providing context but for helping with language and attitudes at that time.

Many serving personnel and military families today still experience extended periods of separation. Were there any themes from Pam and Ron’s story that remain relevant to the Armed Forces community today?

It’s such a difficult situation to be in, particularly when the decisions and choices about when you can spend time together and where are not in your own control. It was clear from Ron’s letters that believing in the job he was doing and knowing that he was

fighting for a better future for himself and Pam and of course, everyone else, was a strong incentive to keep on going.

Although not in the military, I have worked away from home a lot and I know from my own experience that being away from family is much easier if you really enjoy the job you are doing – easier to justify somehow, and easier to be distracted from thoughts of home.

Ron shared his feelings with Pam in his letters and it’s clear that she did too, not just the good stuff but also the bad and I think that ability to write what he really felt gave their relationship an openness and honesty that helped it to flourish even when they were apart. He was also a beautiful

wordsmith, and she clearly treasured his words. I’m not sure many of us write letters anymore, but most of us email and sometimes it can be easier to write how you feel than to say it, and that can be something lovely that your partner can come back to and read over and over again – just like Pam did.

Spring Into Action: A Season of Community and Smiles

pring has brought with it a renewed sense of energy and togetherness, and the People & Families Support Team has been at the heart of it all. Over the Easter holidays, families were invited to a special spring breakfast event that perfectly captured the joy and spirit of the season.

The highlight of the spring programme was a delightful Easter breakfast, where families came together to enjoy a warm and welcoming start to the day. Children were treated to a delicious selection of croissants, pancakes, and waffles—creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for everyone attending.

Adding a touch of magic to the morning, a very special guest made an appearance: the Easter Bunny. Excitement filled the room as children had the chance to meet the much-loved character, creating memorable moments that brought smiles to both young and old.

Alongside the breakfast, children were given the opportunity to take part in a range of spring-themed

craft activities. From colourful creations to hands-on fun, the crafts encouraged creativity and allowed children to express themselves while celebrating the season.

The combination of food, creativity, and festive fun made the event a great success, offering families a chance to spend quality time together in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

With creativity, connection, and community at their heart, future events promise to be just as memorable.

5 personnel from across the RAF came together for this flagship mountain gliding expedition in the French Alps, including representatives from RAF Waddington, with Sgt Alan McCormack and Cpl Lewis Horsley from the ASWC, alongside WO Tim Davies from 14 Sqn, showcasing the skill, professionalism and adventurous spirit that defines our people.

The main aims of the mountain gliding expedition are to develop the leadership and personal qualities of the expedition personnel and to provide advanced flying training opportunities for RAFGSA glider pilots in challenging, mountainous locations away from the flatlands of the UK. Additionally, it aims to raise the standards of airmanship and flying skills to further contribute towards flight safety across the RAFGSA and the RAF.

Mountain flying provides its own unique challenges, none more so than hypoxia – where at altitude oxygen deficiency will impair the function of the brain that can quickly lead to poor judgement and if not recognised in time can be fatal.

Expedition personnel were mandated to attend aircrew hypoxia training at the Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) at RAF Henlow to recognise the signs and symptoms during the onset of hypoxia in their own bodies.

Although use of supplementary oxygen is recommended for flights above 10,000ft the automated systems fitted in the RAFGSA gliders provided oxygen to the pilots as early as 5,000ft.

Throughout the two week Exped the weather was exceptionally good, with sunshine and favourable winds providing either thermal lift, ridge lift, dynamic lift or even wave lift when the Northerly Mistral was blowing.

Glider launching was by aerotow, where the tug pilot would tow and then release the glider over a particular mountain ridge or predeclared location. Thermal and ridge soaring allowed the glider pilots to quickly reach heights upwards of 10,000ft which then opened opportunities to explore Alpine routes and mountain tops further afield. It was not unusual for glider tasks to last upwards of 5 hours in the air and cover well over 300 to 400km.

Compared to UK gliding, the thermal lift in the Alps is extremely dynamic, turbulent with narrow cores – forcing the glider pilots to turn into thermals at much greater angles of bank to remain in the lift to gain that much needed height.

The Exped was a resounding success, with many of the SP who had not flown in the Alps before, being cleared to fly the local mountain ranges following an instructor lead

training programme. Returning pilots found themselves being checked out to fly further afield into the Alps or gained additional instructor ratings and clearances. In addition, two already seasoned UK instructors found themselves being put through their paces by the expedition’s chief flying instructor (CFI), WO Tim Davies. The RAFGSA now has two brand new Mountain Gliding Instructors, ensuring a strong cadre of instructors exists to support future Alpine gliding expeditions.

Honouring Legacy: 44th Anniversary

of Operation BLACK BUCK On Thursday 30 April, RAF Waddington marked the 44th anniversary of Operation BLACK BUCK with a revived Official Mess Function (OMF), bringing together members of the Officers’ Mess and the WOSM for a memorable evening of reflection, camaraderie, and celebration.

A

fter several years’ absence, the event returned with renewed energy in the form of a combined Dining-In, beginning with a three-course meal that set the tone for the night. Two officers from the Officers’ Mess delivered thought-provoking vignettes, offering personal insights into the legacy and impact of BLACK BUCK. The evening was further enriched by Guest of Honour, Group Captain (Retd) Barry Smith CBE BA, who shared his own experiences as part of the historic operation, reminding attendees of the professionalism, resilience, and ingenuity that defined the mission.

A particularly poignant moment came with the laying of a place in honour of Air Commodore (Retd) Simon Baldwin, the Operational Lead

for BLACK BUCK. His deep and enduring connection to RAF Waddington—and his years of service as Chair of the 44 Squadron Association—were respectfully remembered.

Following the formalities, tradition took centre stage

with the burning of a piano outside the Mess, before the atmosphere shifted to celebration. “Top Cover,” a band made up of Station personnel, kept the energy high with an 80s, 90s, and 00s set that quickly filled the dancefloor.

The evening successfully balanced remembrance with esprit de corps, reaffirming the Station’s pride in its heritage while strengthening the bonds across the Whole Force.

From Socials to Service: Waddington WOs & SNCO Mess in Action

A definite highlight of the recent calendar was an evening at Southwell Races, where personnel enjoyed the FREE Race Evening at Nottinghamshire’s popular racecourse.

W

ith transport and entry covered, it made for an easy and social night out, and the sunshine only added to the atmosphere.

There were plenty of successes across the group, with a standout moment in the first race at 17:55. The 25/1 winner Dottie Diamond—trained

by William Stone and ridden

by Finley Marsh—came in strong, with a few lucky backers celebrating early wins.

Throughout the evening, others followed suit, and by the end of the meet, some punters were heading home with noticeably fuller pockets.

More than just the wins, the evening offered a great opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy something different away from the day-to-day.

With such a positive turnout, the Mess is already looking to organise a similar trip in the future—so next time, why not join us for a bit of fun at the gee-gees?

Looking ahead, the WOSM will come together to mark the Battle of Britain on 11 September, reflecting on the

heritage and enduring legacy of air power.

Later in the month, on 30 September, the Whole Force can look forward to a lively Cabaret/Oktoberfest evening, featuring the everpopular Dame Ida—promising an evening of entertainment, laughter, and camaraderie to round off the programme.
