Editor’s Welcome
They say time passes quickly when you are having fun, well as we publish the last Aries edition of 2025, if that’s true what a great year RAF Shawbury has had.
Autumn into Winter is always a poignant time for the Royal Air Force and our sister Services as we commemorate the Battle of Britain and take time at Remembrance Services and Armistice Day to remember those who have served and fallen in defence of the United Kingdom. Our connection to those who went before is not forgotten, therefore it was appropriate to mark a memorial to aircrew who crashed nearby in Wales during WW2.
Our people are just as important as they have ever been. In this edition read about two individuals who have an unparalleled longevity of service and two more recognised for commitment and skill in
their profession. The recent Aries Awards and Honours and Awards events further acknowledge the outstanding array of talent at Shawbury across the Whole Force.
It is vital to develop and support the next generation, be that our trainees or the children of our families. For a small base we deliver large, shown by the number of recent graduations and activities and support of our families and personnel.
We are busy looking towards our festive events and we will cover these in Edition 1 of 2026. Meanwhile, enjoy your break when it comes but spare a thought for those who remain vigilant on duty.

FOREWORD
by Wing Commander Paddy Durnin – Station Commander
As I write it’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us and that I’ve been in post for almost a year already. And what a year it has been!
The last few months have seen the Station and our units engaged in many public events, such as the Battle of Britain Parade, Remembrance events across Shropshire and our Annual Reception in the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess. All these events were well attended by the public and VIPs, and I am incredibly proud of how well the Station was represented on each occasion. The feedback I’ve received has without exception been glowing.
We have also recognised the success of our Whole Force personnel through the Aries Awards where the RAF’s Director People represented the Chief of the Air Staff as a fitting guest of honour. It was great to enjoy an evening with our friends and families to celebrate the outstanding work that has been done over the past 12 months. In some cases, we were able to celebrate excellence spanning a much longer timeframe through the lifetime achievement awards presented to Lieutenant Commander Holley and Mr Ian Forshaw. Lieutenant Commander Holley reached the incredible milestone this year of amassing 10,000 flying hours as a regular, civilian and a reservist over a long, distinguished and still going career. Our Station Photographer Ian Forshaw retired in October having worked at Shawbury since before I was born. Even after his retirement his excellence was still being recognised as one of his photos was highly commended in the RAF Annual Photography Competition in November – his 38th award or commendation at
this level. I wish him the best for his retirement and I’m sure we’ll still see him around.
Having celebrated and recognised our personnel, now is the time to give back to our support networks, our friends
and our families. I hope you all enjoy some well-earned leave over Christmas and get to spend some precious time with your loved ones. Stay safe and I look forward to everyone returning refreshed in the New Year ready to continue in the pursuit of excellence.
STATION NEWS
RAF Shawbury was immensely proud to support Remembrance Sunday parades, services and events across the county. A further 30 personnel supported Shropshire Council to deliver the event.
Remembrance Parade
On this anniversary year of VE and VJ Day, the support of the public has been outstanding. This included lining the route and in the Quarry Memorial yesterday; and for our personnel collecting for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal over the last few weeks.
Personnel from RAF Shawbury supported 30 other community services at churches and war memorials across the region, including the Station Commander at Oswestry.

Annual Reception
This year’s Annual Reception was held on a glorious September evening. The event is RAF Shawbury’s opportunity to say thank you to the wider community for their support of our personnel and activities.
After a reception in the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess, the Station Commander addressed the assembled guests emphasising our role in the community and thanking them for their unwavering support.
The guests then assembled at the front of the Mess for a Sunset Ceremony and flypast, by a Juno helicopter from No. 1 Flying Training School, supported by the Band of the RAF College, a Drill Flight from the Defence College of Air and Space Operations and Ensign Party from 28 Squadron RAF Air Cadets. The Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Anna Turner, said, “It is lovely to get together at RAF Shawbury and hear about the last year’s activities in this wonderful community.”
Councillor Gary Groves, Chair of the Shropshire Council Armed Forces Covenant, observed, “Seeing the mix of ranks at the event from the escort to the hosts and how professional they all are, really illustrates the high standards at RAF Shawbury.”
Mr Steve Jones, Shrewsbury Street Pastors, commented, “How encouraging it was to see a mix of organisations and the opportunities for mutual support.”

Memorial Unveiled for 848 Naval Air Squadron Aircrew
On 18 September, Commander ‘AJ’ Thompson Royal Navy of No.1 Flying Training School based at RAF Shawbury, took the salute at the unveiling of a memorial for three World War II aircrew from 848 Naval Air Squadron.
A Fleet Air Arm Avenger aircraft was flying between Gosport and Kirkwall on 3 February 1944 when it crashed into a hillside north of Lake Vyrnwy in poor weather. All three crew members died at the scene. They were, Sub Lieutenants: William Sneddon Appleby (aged 24) from New Zealand, Ernest Hartley Green (aged 22) from Norfolk and Joe Lupton (aged 21) from West Yorkshire.
After a blessing of the memorial from RAF Shawbury’s Padre, Squadron Leader (Revd) Harrison, there was a minute’s silence, after which a modern-day Avenger aircraft, the Beechcraft King Air operated by 750 Naval Air Squadron, overflew the ceremony.
The memorial was the inspiration of
Rhyd y Felin Forest Manager Jay Williams. He worked tirelessly alongside ex-Fleet Air Arm pilot Tim Nicholas, now an instructor at No.1 Flying Training School, to ensure the vision was fulfilled with the permanent memorial and plaque.
Commander Thompson, Officer Commanding 2 Maritime Air Wing, said: “It has been an honour for me representing the Royal Navy to formally recognise the crash site for the first
time in 81 years. The memorial will be a lasting legacy to the young Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy aircrew who tragically lost their lives here.”

Lieutenant Commander Holley – 10,000 Flying Hours
Take a bow Sir! Lieutenant Commander Holley of No. 1 Flying Training School (No.1 FTS) Standards has reached an incredible 10,000 flying hours, which is over a year in the air.
On landing back from the sortie where he hit this impressive total he was greeted by the Commandant, Group Captain Jordan, and Chief of Staff, Wing Commander Kluth.
The 1 FTS Standards stalwart has achieved this milestone over a flying career spanning more than 45 years with over 12 aircraft types flown. Although retirement is looming, the

Finding the right mortgage broker to help with your mortgage can be difficult for anyone, but for those serving in the armed forces it becomes a bigger challenge as many brokers do not have the experience to fully understand your circumstances. Even explaining your payslips can become a major task.
PFL Mortgages are specialists for the armed forces, and as part of their pledge to the Armed Forces Covenant, for miliary families they have removed the barrier of their standard £395 broker fee, offering their service to you free of charge.
Arranging your mortgage is only part of their service. They will help you from the day you first think about a mortgage, explaining the whole process of house buying or remortgaging, and remain with you every step of the way.
PFL Mortgages work with over 60 lenders, including every major bank and building society in the UK. They are regulated by the Financial Services Authority, which means that they are required by law to find the best deals for you.
Managing Director Graham Salloway says ‘As with most mortgage brokers in the UK, we are paid a commission by the lender. Offering our service free of charge affects our profits, and we can make a small loss in some cases. But by offering the deal to all military families including veterans, it has enabled us to grow our military client base substantially.’
You can contact Craig Litchfield, the Armed Forces Specialist Mortgage Adviser at PFL Mortgages by calling, texting or WhatsApp him on 07903 026443 or email craig@pflmortgages.com
DCASO Dits
The Defence College of Air and Space Operations (DCASO) are delighted to welcome Wing Commander Jacob as the new OC DCASO. No stranger to RAF Shawbury, Wg Cdr Jacob previously served here as OC ABMTS. Now returning to assume command of the DCASO, he brings a wealth of experience, strategic insight, and a genuine passion for developing people and capability. His familiarity with the unit and its mission makes him perfectly placed to lead us into the next chapter. The whole team extends a warm welcome on his return to the DCASO and looks forward to an exciting future ahead under his leadership.
AIR AND SPACE OPERATIONS TRAINING SQUADRON
Air and Space Operations Training Squadron (ASOTS) have been very busy as per usual, but amongst the madness there has been time for some Force Development and Community Projects. Corporal Hopkins was the lead instructor for climbing as part of the DCASO Adventurous Training week in Llangollen, taking fellow personnel from DCASO to various climbing locations based around Llangollen. Untypically for Wales however the weather was a bit wet and wild at certain points meaning the climbing was slightly curtailed, however other activities such as canoeing and walking were still able to go ahead thankfully.
In terms of community projects and engagements, Corporals Arkle and Cartwright were the Air and Space Operations representatives at Rhyl and Wolverhampton town shows, each also had the help of two trainees. These town shows encompass all trades across the RAF, and it was a chance for everyone to showcase what the trades are about to the public. Both events seemed to run very successfully and hopefully it has inspired some individuals to join the RAF.
Finally, it would be remiss not to mention the retirement and send-off of OC ASOTS Squadron Leader (now retired) Wells. After 40 years in the RAF, almost to the day, he decided to call time on an illustrious career that has seen many postings in the UK and abroad. A very generous and genuinely caring man, his leaving lunch was a great event with people invited from far and wide as well as the vast majority of ASOTS who were able to attend. He will be sorely missed and he has more than earned his retirement, all of the ASOTS and everyone who he has served with wishes him well for the future, he can now grow a great big bushy beard and a man bun if that is his desire!
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TRAINING SQUADRON (ATCTS)
A rolling mix of personnel from across DCASO enjoyed a week of adventurous training in Wales through this quarter. This was organised and led by Air Traffic Control Training Squadron (ATCTS) that included Mountain Biking, canoeing and enjoying the peaks that Wales has to offer. The week required some careful co-ordination – with a requirement to continue delivering training back at Shawbury, it had some there for the full week and some just for a day or two.
Even for a day or two, the importance of adventurous training cannot be understated. Getting out of the office and training environment is a welcome respite while fostering a plethora of military attributes that we continue
to foster – leadership, resilience and physical fitness to mention a few. Back at Shawbury, training continues at pace. We have recently seen the latest Joint Air Traffic Control Course cohorts join us with seven courses now running concurrently.
As always, everyone makes their plans for the festive period and ATCTS will be enjoying our usual festivities around this time of year. We pass our best wishes onto everyone, in particular we hope our own personnel who are deployed through the festive time of the year make the best of where they are and we look forward to their return.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
TRAINING QUALITY SQUADRON
The Training Quality Squadron (TQS), supported by wider DCASO staff, continues to prepare personnel for their roles as Defence trainers through delivery of the Defence Trainer course (DTc). All participants complete comprehensive training to uphold the highest professional standards in training delivery. All successful participants attain a Level 3 award in Education and Training, enabling them to deliver consistent, high-quality training across RAF Shawbury and throughout the wider Defence sector. In addition to trainer development, TQS members have facilitated multiple coaching and mentoring courses, further enhancing participants’ effectiveness, and empowering them to support and develop colleagues across their military career.
In September, our team headed to Llangollen, Wales for an action-packed week of adventurous training. The weather poured most of the week, but our team powered through with muddy boots, soggy gear, and unstoppable spirits. Hill walking came first: slippery paths, sideways rain, and heroic navigation (“we’re not lost, just exploring alternative routes”). Every climb built resilience and leadership and
taught us that teamwork matters more than dry socks. Next came mountain biking, where we discovered that mud is not only unavoidable but strangely bonding. There were a few tumbles, a couple of battle scars, and plenty of laughter. Then it was onto canoeing - Coordination was a challenge, but communication and persistence won the day. Even when a canoe developed ‘creative steering’ nobody gave up. Despite scratches, soggy sandwiches, and questionable hair by day five, we came away stronger, closer, and a little muddier than before. We learned new outdoor skills, honed our leadership, and proved that spirit beats weather every time.
We bid a fond farewell and congratulations to Sqn Ldr Jeff Hodgson, who recently departed DCASO following his well-earned promotion. Jeff’s leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to training excellence will have a lasting, legacy across the DCASO and the Air & Space Operations Profession. His promotion is a testament to his dedication and impact, and while he is greatly missed, we wish him continued success in his new role. Thank you for your outstanding service.

Honourable Company of Air Pilots award recipients at the
Master Air Pilot Award for Central Flying School (Helicopter) Members
Two members of the Central Flying School (Helicopter) Squadron have had their hard work formally recognised by being awarded ‘Master Air Pilot’ status. On Thursday 23 October 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Wilkinson and Flight Lieutenant Read attended a banquet at the Guildhall in London, hosted by the Honourable Company of Air Pilots, who presented the award.
The Honourable Company of Air Pilots state that: “These certificates are awarded to aviators who have, over a number of years, displayed the qualities of pilotage, air navigation, airmanship and character which have brought honour and respect to the profession. The award should be seen as a recognition of long service and consistently high standards in one or more branches of professional flying, whether civil or military, including air
transport, flying instruction, test or operational flying and in the case of the Master Rear crew award, to someone who has a direct airborne involvement in ensuring safe and effective aircraft operations. As the title suggests, the recipient will be a proven Master of their craft.”
CFS(H) Sqn would like to congratulate Lt Col Wilkinson and Flt Lt Read for this outstanding achievement.

RAF Shawbury’s Station Photographer Retires
RAF Shawbury recently said farewell to one of the Station’s longest-serving members, after 45 years as RAF Shawbury’s Station Photographer. Mr Ian Forshaw has now retired after serving in Defence photography for 51 years.
Over his career, Ian has won a record 37 Service level awards, including RAF Photographer of the Year in 2016. His trademark of capturing what it means
to serve in the military through setting and facial expression has had a huge impact across Defence.
Ian has steered the Station through five decades of technological change. There is no-one who has delivered more over a sustained period to promote RAF Shawbury and its personnel as a small Station with a very big heart.
Known best by everyone for cycling to his assignments, camera in basket, Ian will always be ‘Our Station Photographer.’ At his leaving event the Station Commander and Babcock General Manger thanked Ian for his incredible professionalism and dedication.
The best wishes from us all go to Ian for a very long, active and happy retirement.

FORCE DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Ex SERPENS HORIZON
Army Air Corps Officers of No.1 Flying Training School have deployed to London on Exercise SERPENS HORIZON to conduct Force Development.
On Day 1 of the exercise, personnel walked the route taken by the Unknown Warrior following World War One. The route commenced at London Victoria, where once transported from France to Dover, the Unknown Warrior arrived precisely at 8:32 on the 10 November 1920, and was met by a detachment of 16 Grenadier Guardsmen, who stood watch over the solider. A plaque can be found between Platforms 8 and 9 at Victoria Station that commemorates the arrival of the Unknown Warrior.
On 11 November 1920, a Funeral Procession formed at Victoria Station
and conduced the Coffin in slow time by way of Grosvenor Gardens, Grosvenor Place, Wellington Arch, Constitution Hill, The Mall, Admiralty Arch, Charing Cross to the Cenotaph in Whitehall – a total distance of 3,960 yards – where the funeral was conducted.
Whilst personnel walked this route, vignettes were delivered on the journey of the Unknown Warrior and the Funeral ceremony, that was held at 11am, The 11th Day of the 11th Month, 1920.
The Funeral was opened with a 19gun salute in Hyde Park, and attended by King George V, where, with an Honour Guard of 100 Victoria Cross winners, the Unknown Warrior was laid to rest in the Pathway of Kings, in Westminster Abbey.
Day 2 of the exercise consisted of a visit to The Imperial War Museum, where discussions were held on several topics, including life in the
trenches, the Holocaust, and Victoria Cross recipients, alongside a tour of the museum’s current exhibitions.
Following the visit to The Imperial War Museum, personnel gathered alongside over 220 officers, past and present, at the Royal Horse guards Hotel in London for the annual Army Air Corps Officers London Lunch. Attendance was widespread, from newly commissioned officers’ only weeks prior, to senior veterans of the Corps. Speeches included an address from the Colonel Commandant, Major General Mike Keating, who laid down a vision for the future of the Corps, as Unmanned Air Systems are fielded and integrated alongside crewed platforms.

SAFETY NEWS
Drone Awareness Day
On Friday 29 August, No.1 Flying Training School and RAF Shawbury Flight Safety teams held their first Drone Safety Awareness Day.
The aim of the day was to gain a better understanding of how different organisations employ drones commercially and professionally across Shropshire and the Low Flying Area we use to deliver helicopter flying training for UK Defence.
We were pleased to host some forty operators representing organisations who provide drone services for farming, construction, search & rescue and media businesses; as well as operators from the Prison, Fire and Police Services and Harper Adams University.
Using our flying simulators, the visitors got the opportunity to see the aircrew view from our helicopters and there was plenty of opportunity for discussion about how we can mutually share our county’s airspace in the safest way and in the interest of all. With drones set to become ever more popular for recreational and professional use, the importance of the theme of ‘Shared Skies, Shared Responsibility’ was well understood by everyone by the end of the event.

Music and Songwriting Workshop with the Hive
During the October half term holidays, young people from the RAF Shawbury Airplay Project were fortunate to have the chance to collaborate with James Stanley a music editor, producer, and songwriter from the Hive in Shrewsbury. This had again been made possible by funding from the High Sheriff of Shropshire’s Youth Fund.
Fourteen young people experienced a day of learning the songwriting process, from beginning to end; and with a final performance of their group song on stage in the youth club in front of parents and carers.
They began the day with a brainstorm of ideas from everyone. Some then chose to work further on the lyrics, whilst other laid down a backing track using either their own instruments or those already in the Youth Centre.
Some of the young people were also given the chance to learn how to use the equipment to be sound engineers for the day. It was encouraging to see the young people so focussed and engaged with the whole process and working together to produce their song ‘Sparkles in the Dark’.
If your son or daughter is interested in joining Airplay, please email the Lead Youth Worker at: Cheryl.foster@oneymca.org or log onto: www.airplayconnect.org to register.

Airplay’s ‘Blue for Youth Week’
In preparation for Blue for Youth Week, the young people from all age groups at RAF Shawbury Airplay Youth Club had worked hard creating and baking blue themed treats to sell to parents and raise funds for the High Sheriff’s Youth Awareness Day.
RAF Shawbury Airplay Project has been fortunate enough to receive funding from the High Sherriff’s Youth Fund to support summer activities. To keep with the blue theme, young people and staff also dressed in blue for all club sessions that week. The Station Gate Guardian Wessex helicopter was also lit blue in support of the High Sheriff’s youth initiative.

Bushcraft Experience with Woodland Roots
During the summer holidays, 12 excited young people and two staff set off for the woods of the Llanforda estate near Oswestry to meet up with Tom from Woodlands Roots Bushcraft Experience.
We arrived at a beautifully arranged camp in the woods, and all sat on sawn off tree stumps under a canopy strung from the treetops. Tom then explained the activities for the session and emphasised housekeeping and safety rules.
The young people worked together in groups of three, to create a watertight shelter using a tarpaulin sheet and ropes. Tom firstly demonstrated three different knots and their uses. Some of our young people who have attended Scouts or Guides were familiar and able to help those for whom this was a new skill. Once the shelters were erected, there was then much hilarity ‘furnishing’ them with logs for ‘sofas’ etc. The waterproofing was tested using Tom’s watering can! To everyone’s delight, they all passed the test!
They learnt how to build and light a campfire. Tom explained the different grades of wood to look out for and their uses in fire making, from small twigs for initially lighting the fire to larger logs
for fuel to keep it alight. After collecting their timber, they took it back to their fire pits, and using pieces of steel and flint, struck them together until they produced a spark to light the cotton wool and twigs. Once the fires were all alight, the final activity was to make and cook their own bread. For this, they were shown how to whittle a stick to enable them to wrap their bread dough around it and hold it over the fire. In another area, other members made bread using flour, water and milk powder. (I must stress; water was available to wash their hands when required!) This proved to be one of the favourite parts for many, and remarkably, the bread even tasted ok! This was one of two activities which were funded by the High Sheriff’s Youth Fund.

Whixall Bridleway Group and the British Horse Society
Ten trainee aircrew from No.1 Flying Training School headed out on 27 August to help Whixall Bridleway Group volunteers clear the Alders Lane bridleway, in affiliation with the British Horse Society (BHS).
RAF Shawbury has a close working relationship with BHS through our ‘Be Seen Be Safer’ campaign, which promotes the wearing of high visibility clothing by riders and their horses to provide the best opportunity for our aircrew to see them when operating in our low flying area. Clearing bridleways and the vegetation which borders them also increases the visibility of riders. Early sight of riders helps our aircrew to make best decisions to try and maximise safe distances between helicopters and horses, whilst taking into account the many other considerations of users on the ground and in the air.
The Chair of the Whixall Bridleway Group, Chrissy Stanley, said, “We are very grateful for the support of RAF
Shawbury. We wouldn’t be able to ride on this track without such combined efforts. It has been a really interesting experience to share details about our lives together and to get to know the work RAF Shawbury has been doing to support local communities.”
Equally for our trainee aircrew who are at the start of their flying careers, learning about the volunteers’

CHARITY NEWS
RAF Shawbury SSAFA and SCT News
It’s been a successful 3rd quarter of 2025 for the RAF Shawbury SSAFA Serving Community Team (SCT).
Families’ Day, on the Friday of the Summer Bank Holiday, saw the team run our much-loved cake and brew stall. This time though from a 12x12 tent, bringing back some interesting ‘Former Yugoslavia’ memories for the military members of the team! It was smashing to meet so many of the Station personnel & their families, and to hear stories of what support some of you have received from SSAFA in the past. The food & drink sales, plus the ‘barrel’ of beer raffle, raised money which will be used by the SCT to provide support and events for RAF Shawbury personnel & dependants. The raffle ticket was drawn by Commandant No.1 FTS & DCASO and won by a member of Station Workshops.
In September the SCT judged our annual Sunflower growing competition, it had been lovely to see some of the incredible efforts around the estate and Families Accommodation. The winners were notified and collected their wellearned prizes. Keep your eyes peeled for the 2026 competition and let’s see more Sunflowers bringing colour to the Station, perhaps some sections/Sqns could plant up some pots (before you know it it’ll be a Station Commander’s cup event).
On 30 October the SCT held a Pumpkin Carving event in the Firmin Bar at the Aries Club. The event was designed to provide an opportunity for people to escape any isolation or loneliness they may be experiencing for whatever reason. During the day families came and some of the carving designs done by the children were very impressive. In the evening the event was more focused on adults and whilst there was some very good pumpkin carving
done it was heartening to see the level of conversation and inclusion that was generated, helped along by a shared

RAF Shawbury Gliding Club – OPEN TO ALL!
Despite the challenges of operating off the grassed areas at Shawbury it’s been another good year for RAF Shawbury Gliding Club. We’ll soon be back on the new hard surfaces and then aim to ramp up the flying schedule to meet the ever-increasing demand from those who want to fly with the club.
We welcome the whole service community and their dependants. However, if you are in Phase 1 or 2 training at RAF Shawbury, for a £30 membership fee you can experience the cheapest way to get real hands-on flying. Our RAF Central Fund sponsored Mechanics Endowment Fund (MEF) Gliding Bursary Programme includes nine training flights to 2,000ft, an aerobatics flight to 4,000ft that allows students to experience the g-forces on the body and airframe, and 60 minutes of flying training in a motor glider. Over 100 students have completed the programme so far. Further funding is then available via the RAFGSA Go Solo Scholarship scheme to students who wish to continue to solo pilot standard, as some students did earlier this year.

SPORTS AND FITNESS NEWS
MilFit Cup
The German Military (Bundeswehr) invited No 1 Flying Training School (1 FTS) to compete in their annual MilFitCup competition in Warendorf. The competition spanned two days with 29 teams from across the German military and two guest, foreign military teams (UK and Austria).
As 1 FTS has been training German pilots at RAF Shawbury we were lucky enough to receive an invite to the MilFitCup for the third year running. The competition was a series of military based fitness assessments for time. Day 1 was two separate individual tests and Day 2 was a team loaded march with multiple stages on route. All individual and team times were aggregated to rank the teams.
Outside of the fitness competition, we had the opportunity to relax in the camp grounds and cafe. A BBQ
was put on each night, providing a great opportunity to socialise with the other teams and staff. The facilities at Warendorf are excellent. The camp is extremely well maintained and is clearly a point of pride for the Bundeswehr as the German military sports school.
We also had time to visit Dusseldorf city before catching our flight back to Birmingham, taking in the sights and culture. 1 FTS were allocated our own German liaison officer who organised our transport, translated all briefings and ensured we had everything we needed. We were all really impressed with the German hospitality and the whole event had a great atmosphere. Everyone was extremely friendly and even though a healthy rivalry existed between the teams, the overwhelming feeling was one of collaboration.
